a message from President brother ronald gallagher, fsc, Phd When I joined Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory last summer, I was immediately greeted with the signature warmth for which SHC is known. The entire community—faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni and friends—gave meaning to the phrase “Warm Irish Welcome.” I am proud to discover that our Lasallian Vincentian mission is vibrant and extensive.

As we begin the final semester of the academic year, I look upon my time here in admiration. Our hard-working students shine in all their endeavors—from an astonishing 100 percent pass rate in Advanced Placement Spanish and Mandarin, to standing ovations at the fall performances of The Three Musketeers, to studentathletes signing letters of intent to play at the college level—SHC students remain focused, enthusiastic and passionate.

Throughout the fall and winter, we welcomed hundreds of students and families interested in joining the SHC family. Our Irish for a Day Program, which pairs eighth graders with a student ambassador for an inside look at SHC, filled in just two days. Our Parent Visit Program filled in less than one week. We are honored by the countless families that consider SHC a place where they envision their child’s growth.

In our partnership with students, we understand that their inherent curiosity drives their success. It is our duty to help them navigate their questions to arrive at meaningful answers. This issue of Second Century illustrates a few of the countless ways SHC harnesses student curiosity to uncover the path to success.

SHCʼs library looks much different from the libraries of decades past. Students no longer lose their way in a maze of stacks or navigate the Dewey Decimal System by flipping through card catalogs. Today, SHC students have access to some of the most innovative library services technology available at the secondary level. With our knowledgeable and passionate library faculty at the helm, students receive a topnotch college preparatory experience.

’s library is located on the top floor of our La Salle Academic Building. Natural light floods in through loft windows that offer a panoramic city view.

Throughout the school day, students gather at communal tables for collaborative work, they plug in their devices at charging stations, they quietly work at desktop computers, they visit library faculty for research assistance. Before school, after school and especially during collaboration periods, the library becomes a hub of activity with nearly 200 students in dialogue, creating intellectual energy and what Director of Library Services Judy Scudder refers to as “scholarly noise.”

COlleGe PrePArAtiOn Scudder spent the spring of 2012 on a research sabbatical to learn from other high school libraries across the nation.

She quickly discovered that SHC’s library services were far beyond what most high schools offered. She turned to university libraries for fresh ideas. “Visiting college libraries was incredibly affirming. Many librarians were shocked at the extensive services we provide to our students, and the high level of research competency our students gain.”

According to a 2013 Project Information Literacy report, “The Google-centric search skills that [college] freshmen bring from high school only get them so far with finding and using trusted sources they need for fulfilling college research assignments.”

SHC’s students overcome this limitation with skills they develop to successfully navigate the universe of information available.

learn how to identify scholarly articles, how to generate accurate citations and the importance of a diverse range of sources. Scudder shares, “College professors often judge papers by the quality of sources. If your sources are weak, it may color the way they read your paper.”

Navigating Information Students who grew up in the internet age face a dilemma when tackling a research project—how do I sift through the endless amount of information available and narrow in on reliable sources? Where do I begin? As one SHC student shared in a recent library survey, “Ask the librarians, they know everything.”

To help reign in the abundance of resources, SHC instructors partner with library faculty, a collaborative effort that ensures student success.

Scudder explains, “We are always thrilled when instructors approach us for collaboration because our students benefit the most when

Faculty members approach librarians with a research project in mind, then our librarians approach the project as a student would, testing different research databases to find the most useful resources for each specific assignment.

Librarians create web-based research guides by gathering the most useful databases available.

Students then use the research guides to inform their work.

Brother Joseph Fabiano, FSC, library services assistant and beloved member of the SHC community, began his service at Sacred Heart in 1966. He became a staple in the SHC library in 1992, and continues to find joy assisting students in their research efforts. A history buff who counts The Cambridge Ancient History collection as his favorite, Brother Joseph shares his library experience through the years. “I hope that students are using resources and relationships to expand their faith and maintain enthusiasm to develop and search for knowledge and truth.”

our BYOD program. In addition to academic resources, our library also provides leisure reading opportunities through the recent addition of OverDrive, a browserbased e-reader. SHC Librarian Danielle Farinacci shares, “As librarians, we really want our students to read for pleasure. If they have a 20-minute break, we’d much rather students read a leisure book than go on Facebook.”

With the dizzying number of resources available, guidance from expert librarians is essential. “SHC’s supportive administration ensures that we have the resources we need

to provide the latest in library services to our students. Our library curriculum prepares our students to be strategic and responsible users of information,” says Farinacci.

Scudder and Farinacci both envision continued growth for SHC’s library. They are committed to maintaining a library that is consistently on the cutting-edge of library technology. Farinacci shares, “We constantly research best and next practices, and every year, we gain more and more digital resources. It’s almost as if there isn’t anything new left. We’re ready for the next development.”

Why do annual gifts matter?

When you make an annual gift to SHC, it is a tangible expression of your belief in the importance of the educational experience we offer.

Unrestricted annual gifts made through our Fund for Excellence and Parent Giving Program are immediately put to use as they come in and complement scholarships, our endowment and capital gifts. This support allows us to address emerging needs and unexpected opportunities.

Why is alumni participation so important?

SHC’s goal for the 2014-15 school year is to have 1,433 alumni make a gift of any size and bring us to 10 percent alumni participation. Participation enhances our reputation, ignites camaraderie and shows current students that alumni value their education and want to share the Fightin’ Irish experience with future students.

Do gifts of all size really matter?

Whether it is $5 or $500, $20 or $2,000, gifts of every size make an impact.

In the 2013-14 school year, gifts under $100 added up to $331,844 in support of scholarships, programming and our facilities. Annual support provides SHC with a reliable resource to ensure an exceptional education experience year after year.

I want to support financial aid— where should I give?

It is paramount that SHC remain accessible to families now and in the future. We partner with alumni, parents, parents of alumni, foundations, corporations and friends to meet the immediate and future needs of our financial assistance program. This school year, SHC will award approximately $3.9 million in financial assistance comprised of funds raised through the Fund for Excellence, Parent Pledge Program, gifts made to the General Scholarship Fund and interest earned on our endowment.

Scholarship support is a key component of the 2020 Vision Campaign. Since July 1, 2008, SHC has distributed $16 million of the $40 million projected to be distributed by 2020.

How is the campus evolving?

To better meet the needs of our evolving curriculum, SHC continually enhances our campus to provide the best learning environment for our students.

In 2013, SHC reorganized our science curriculum so that all students take physics in the ninth grade.

The same year, we began a four-phase, $3.75 million renovation project to accommodate our growing science program. Phase One converted existing classrooms into three state-of-the-art laboratories.

Phase Two renovated existing space into two modern and efficient chemistry classrooms, including a suitable prep space. All room renovations included updated lighting, electrical and mechanical, data wiring, ceilings and floors.

Phase Three begins this summer and will create two new, fully equipped chemistry laboratories, and one biology laboratory. Finally, Phase Four will begin the summer of 2016 to revamp the remaining science classrooms into three biology and marine biology classrooms and laboratories.

To date, SHC has raised nearly $2 million of the $3.75 million project cost, including recent gifts of $250,000 from the William G. Irwin Charity Foundation, $200,000 from the Herbst Foundation and $200,000 from the Carl Gellert & Celia Berta Gellert Foundation.

Academic Explorations:

For the Adventurous Learner

At the intersection of curiosity and curriculum is SHC’s Academic Explorations program. This year, Academic Explorations celebrates its 10th anniversary. What began as an addition to our De Paul Scholar curriculum is now a thriving program offered to all students.

“T

he goal of AEs is to encourage our students’ intellectual curiosity, to strengthen the cohesiveness of the community and curriculum, and to offer a venue for teachers’ passions and exploratory lesson planning,” says Assistant Principal for Academics Joan O’Neill.

Academic Explorations are single-unit courses that stretch beyond college-preparatory offerings and expose students to topics not typically covered in standard curricula. They are weeklong courses that meet outside of the regular school day. To promote intellectual exploration and risk-taking, AEs are assessed on a pass/fail basis. A student who successfully completes an Academic Exploration course receives an additional unit on his or her transcript, while grade point average remains unaffected. This format allows our students to follow their intellectual curiosity without compromising already crowded schedules. O’Neill shares, “AEs defy academic fatigue and

the sense of education as a quantifiable product: a single test score. They invite students and instructors to rediscover the irreducible nature of learning.”

Throughout the last decade, AE students engaged in peaceful protest at the School of the Americas in Following Your Heart: Civil Disobedience and Social Justice. Students replicated meals as described in classic literature in A Literary Feast. They partnered with zookeepers and scientists at the San Francisco Zoo to study animal behavior in Monkeying Around, and they learned about the Physiology of Our Favorite Sports.

O’Neill often refers to AEs as an opportunity for the adventurous learner, and there is an adventure in store for instructors as well. Instructor of Science and Mathematics Liam Carey taught Applied Statistics & Fantasy Baseball last summer and led his class on a field trip to AT&T park for a Giant’s game where they witnessed Tim Lincecum’s famous no-hitter of the season. AEs engage students’ interests through material relevant to their experience as young learners.”

Director of Studies and founder of SHC’s Academic Explorations Kate McFadden shares her enthusiasm for AEs and hopes for the program in the years to come. “I love that the AEs are part of so many students' learning experiences here at SHC. I'm amazed at the creativity and ingenuity of the faculty who teach the classes, who tap into their own passions and meet students' curiosity. I think that the experiences faculty work to provide the AE students is amazing in its variety. My hope is that AEs continue to strive for excellence and evolve to mirror the needs of students as the world around us changes.”

ervice is a core value taught to SHC students, who animate the message of our Founders through acts of justice, charity, prayer, community-building and reflection in and out of the classroom. As a community-inspiring activity, service is also a key component of life as a faculty or staff member at SHC. “Essentially, everything we offer to our students is also offered to our adult community,” says Associate Director of Service & Community Julia Rinaldi. “Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in everything from retreats to immersion service projects to blood drives.”

Rinaldi shares, “Whether it’s leading a class discussion to prepare students for their Saint Anthony’s Foundation immersion or donating blood at our blood drives, our faculty and staff dive into the beauty and challenge of service.”

Gruber describes the necessity of curiosity to learning, “Curiosity seems to put the brain in a state that is very conducive to learning. Think of it as a vortex that draws in things you are motivated to learn, and everything around it.” Gruber describes findings that illustrate the brain’s ability to retain incidental content, in addition to the main content that initially inspired curiosity. Instructors take advantage of this phenomenon by connecting with students where they are. Assistant Principal for Academics Joan O’Neill shares, “As teachers, it is our job to become a question architect and create experiences that inspire curiosity and spark student questions.”

C o ll a b o r at i o n Students today learned to work together on assignments from an early age, and the desire to collaborate extends to the secondary and college level. At SHC, group research projects and presentations abound, which satiate our students’ desire to work collaboratively while mirroring the experience that awaits them in the professional world.

O’Neill describes one simple and effective way many SHC instructors engage students in classroom collaboration: the think pair share method. Instructors pose a question, students take time to individually contemplate a response, then they group in pairs to discuss their ideas. Finally, they share their findings with the entire class. “When we create opportunities such as this, where all students are engaged in discussions, we increase their ability to retain information. It’s rare in today’s world that we begin and finish something entirely alone.”

To further the collaborative experience, our daily academic schedule incorporates a dedicated collaboration period. During collaboration periods, students can be found working together in the Library or Dining Hall, studying in the La Salle Plaza or attending student organization meetings. Common spaces throughout campus beckon collaboration with modern furniture that can be manipulated and rearranged to suit the changing needs of our students, keeping their space fresh and useful. Following the success of our Bring Your Own Device pilot year, students and instructors continually discover ways BYOD allows for meaningful engagement with one another and course material. BYOD invites students to select the device they find most relevant. One student may use a laptop, another may choose a tablet, both students access everything they need. Schoolwide use of Google Drive allows for anytime-anyplace-any device access to documents, and SHC’s Educational Technology team promotes the use of free, open-source applications and software to ensure ease of access.

in their lesson plans, one that helps connect students to each other, creates digital citizenship and engages students with course material in a manner relevant to their experience.

Instructor of Religious Studies Emilie Fisher-Fleig engages students with their devices through consistent use of SHC’s web-based learning management system, Schoology. Church History and Ethics students participate in class discussions on Schoology, where instructor settings require students to post original ideas before they view peer responses. “It encourages students to craft their responses based on their individual understanding, instead of parroting each other’s comments.”

Instructor of Mathematics Vito Ferrante touts the transformative effect BYOD has on instruction. “BYOD reinvigorates my instruction and makes me a better teacher.” Ferrante’s students receive succinct lectures in video form for homework. The short video lectures allow students to watch as many times as needed to absorb the lesson. The next day, students take an assessment quiz online to apply the lecture concepts. The online format allows Ferrante to immediately view those who aptly comprehend the material, and those who may need extra assistance. With the free class time created through the revised lecture format, Ferrante connects with each individual who may need help.

Ferrante’s students also use their devices to record think alouds, a process which requires them to record themselves as they talk through the process of solving a mathematical problem. Students share their videos with Ferrante, who uses them to assess portions of the

content with which students may struggle.

With SHC’s successful implementation of BYOD, Ferrante no longer teaches from a textbook.

“The wealth of information out there is well beyond what any single textbook curriculum can offer. I can tailor my lesson with more efficiency and greater customization than a textbook company that is not familiar with my students and community.”

Since the launch of BYOD one year ago, Director of Educational Technology Matt Montagne observed a three-fold increase in overall use of Schoology. “This means students and teachers are taking advantage of tools such as online quizzes for more immediate assessment, online forums for synthesizing and discussing classroom content and more. Teachers use BYOD to gain better insight and make timely adjustments to classroom instruction in a way that benefits student learning. Teachers also leverage student access to create rich supplemental learning resources, and some even created their own digital textbooks. All of this means more timely and relevant learning resources for use in the classroom.”

Em o t i o n a l C o n n e c t i o n “One enduring truth is the emotional component of learning—students learn when they feel safe,” McFadden says. That environment is built by SHC instructors who honor our Lasallian Vincentian tradition by fulfilling their roles as big brother and big sister. Natalie Escobar ’14 explains how instructors impacted her development at SHC: “Teachers at SHC took the time to know me beyond a name in their grade books, and they helped me discover my own self-worth. All of the teachers I had served as models of how to live life with meaning and compassion.”

Brother Ron emphasizes the importance of connecting with our students: “Our heritage and Founders ask us to ‘touch the hearts’ of our students. This is a lofty but achievable task, and speaks to the holiness of the vocation of a teacher, one which is sacred and caring.”

CroSS Country

The boys cross country team finished sixth at the WCAL Finals.

Stephen Peterson ’15 was the top finisher for the Irish, placing 25th in league with an impressive time of 16:41. Peterson was the lone qualifier for the CCS Championship meet at Toro Park where he finished 21st, dropping :26 from his previous best on that course. The girls team was seventh in the WCAL Finals and sent two individuals on to the CCS meet.

Carolyn Scott ’17 finished 14th in CCS and Jodi Mar ’17 finished 38th, both setting personal course records. Mar dropped :55 and Scott an impressive 1:13!

The Frosh-Soph girls had the best WCAL finish of any SHC team, placing fourth, despite having the two fastest sophomores (Mar and Scott) moving up to varsity. The boys and girls teams will look to their young stars in 2015 for their return to the State Finals.

FootbaLL

After finishing at the bottom of the brutally competitive WCAL in 2013, the Fightin’ Irish had nowhere to go but up. The 2014 team opened the season with three dominating non-league wins but came up empty in WCAL play. However, the team’s 0-7 league record belies their play on the field, as they have been within one possession of the lead in the fourth quarter of four games and led in the second half of another.

The team will graduate a lot of talent this year, including second-year starting quarterback Logan White ’15 (First Team All-WCAL) and Tyler DiGrande (Second Team), but the cupboard is not bare for Coach Ken Peralta ’79 in what will be his third season at the helm of the Fightin’ Irish next school year. Wide receiver Ronan Murphy ’16 (Second Team All-WCAL), who led the league in receptions, and tailback Jamar Williams-Sheppard ’16 (First Team) will headline a very talented team next year, including members of this year’s freshman team (6-3) which finished with the best WCAL record in school history and went on the road to defeat the eventual league champion in their final game of the season.

GIrLS GoLF

The future for the girls golf program looks very bright. The top five scorers at this year’s WCAL Finals will return in 2015-16, including the team’s medalist, Kai Wong ’16, and their All-WCAL honoree, Shauna Eng ’18. Wong and Eng led the Fightin’ Irish to an excellent finish at the WCAL Finals where the team shaved 84 strokes off their result from the same tournament on the same course in 2013. Their clutch performance at the WCAL Finals was so good that over the course of the 18-hole tournament, they posted the best and second-best nine-hole scores of the season.

Head Coach John Landers said of the girls’ performance, “We have a lot to be happy about this season. Five girls shot lower than our No. 2 did last year! While we will lose Danielle Hirano ’15, a third-year varsity golfer, the rest of the varsity team will return, so I am really excited to see where we go from here.”

The tennis team finished the season with their third-straight winning record, at 12-10, finishing fifth in the WCAL. Their margins of victory throughout the year vastly improved from last year as they finished 84-66 in individual matches. Five of the six individuals and doubles teams representing the Irish at the WCAL tournament advanced to the second round, and both Alex Bass-McBride ’17 and Claire Perliss ’16 advanced all the way to the quarterfinals, a record for SHC girls tennis. Bass-McBride and Perliss led the Irish on the All-WCAL list with their Second Team selections, while the doubles team of Emily Rogers ’16 and Sophie Kuehl ’15 earned Honorable Mention. The JV team finished the season 12-5, good enough for a third place finish in the WCAL. GIrLS VoLLeybaLL

The Irish added an exclamation point onto a season of superlatives with a commanding sweep in the title match for the program’s first-ever State Championship. The team hit new heights this season, with its highest-ever MaxPreps national ranking (second), its first win over a No. 1 nationally ranked team (Archbishop Mitty), its all-time best record (37-3), its best finish in the prestigious Spikefest I tournament (runner-up), its all-time best three tournament victories (Serve It Up, Spikefest II and Deer Valley), its fifth NorCal title, its 11th straight appearance in the State tournament and its first ever WCAL Championship.

The team was led by First Team All-WCAL honorees Alexis Dirige ’16 and Madison Murtagh ’15, along with Kaitlyn Jochum ’15, Abbey Santa Maria ’15, Maia So-Holloway ’16 and Madison Wong ’15, all of whom earned All-WCAL Honorable Mentions.

Sharing in a mission to provide opportunities for San Francisco youth, SHC and the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco have enjoyed a decade-long partnership. SHC provides tutoring, professional services and financial aid opportunities for club members while the Boys & Girls Club welcomes SHC students with swimming pool access at their Page Street facility. our partnership continues with the opening of the don Fisher Clubhouse in Hayes Valley this spring. by Jerry Brown ’09 I arrived in France last August, and I have nothing but positive things to say about the club, fans, teammates and country! My supportive team has definitely helped in easing the expected homesickness that comes with moving thousands of miles away. While I miss my family dearly, I know my hard work and dedication sets an important example, and that gives me great pride.

While abroad, I am wrapping up my graduate studies at Santa Clara University. It’s not always easy to balance my professional and academic lives, but I love to be challenged and consider it an opportunity to stay driven, focused and ambitious.

Prior to my departure, I promised my family that I would embrace French culture, and so far, I have lived up to that promise. France is a gorgeous country with so much history, and I enjoy exploring every chance I get.

In addition to beginning French language lessons, I have developed a taste for the food, especially choucroute, jambon fumé et saucisses and Kugelhopf.

On the court, the style of play here includes fast pace, discipline and structure. The best teams deny every pass, which makes running half-court sets a bit challenging. The European game schedule is much different from the United States, as we have a full week to mentally refocus and prepare for our next game.

When I’m not training, I serve as assistant coach for our youth team. As a professional athlete, I realize how important it is to be hands-on in the community. I take pride in building relationships with youth, because it is vital for them to have positive role models.

Overall, la vie est belle! I’m loving every second of my time in France, because I know how hard I had to work to get here—not just physically, but mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

I can’t give enough credit to the many people at SHC who helped me to get where I am today: the entire basketball and strength and conditioning staff, Ms. Jeff rey, Sister Frances Meyer, Mrs. Carlson and the entire Piro Scholar faculty.

he power of collaboration is illustrated in the recent opening of Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, and many members of the SHC community played a role.

PHySICS Last October, five SHC physics students had the rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes tour of Levi’s Stadium, led by SHC parent and Chief Engineer Brent Frew. The students observed the Second Law of Thermodynamics in action by observing the heat transfer process used at the stadium. They learned about the elements that earned Levi’s Stadium a Gold LEED, or Leadership

intricate reclaimed water, solar and generator power systems, and expansive green roof. The reclaimed water system, the largest of any kind in the United States, was installed by F.W. Spencer & Son, a prominent, local mechanical contracting firm founded by the late Will Spencer ’65, former board member and SHC investor. F.W. Spencer & Son also installed more than 3,000 plumbing fixtures and drainage across the 1,800,000 square-foot stadium. Physics student Lauren Pugeda ’18 reflects, “The tour was incredibly educational and fascinating. My favorite part had to be the green roof. The view of both the entire stadium and its surroundings was jaw-dropping.

Mission, or colleges like Stanford and Santa Clara. They were returning WWII veterans who fought at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

They were pioneers and incredibly humble men who did not consider themselves special. Then they came home and played pro football for about $4,000 a year, not much more than they made in the Army.”

The museum also provides STEM-based programming for grade school students, using football as a way to inspire student interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

Museum-goers can catch a screening of the 49ers signature film in the museum’s state-of-theart Morabito Theater. The film tells the inspiring history of the 49ers and includes commentary from Peter Siragusa ’73.

SHC is also tied to one of the most prized artifacts on display at the museum—the Dwight Clark Catch Ball, donated by the late Bill McDonagh ’67. The ball was in play during the famous 1981 NFC Championship game against the Dallas Cowboys. The catch is largely considered one of the greatest plays in NFL history, and started a Super Bowl winning streak throughout the 1980s for the team.

He spent four years in Cambodia building a grassroots nonprofit called Let Us Create, an art therapy organization for at-risk youth. Felix invented a machine that accurately adds essential vitamins and minerals to flour at village-level grain mills. He spent two years in rural mountain villages throughout Nepal designing and testing prototypes of this Dosifier.

Felix currently resides in Tanzania, where he is a founding member of Sanku Fortification, an organization that improves the health and vitality of those without access to nutrient-enriched foods throughout the developing world.

In 2013, Matthew Szeto and Derrick Gellidon first contemplated creating a specialty beverage truck after noticing a gap in the Bay Area food truck market.

In a perfect storm of events, their third partner, Efferman Ezell, perfected a system for blending dessert inspired protein shakes and was drawing demand in the area. Taking a leap of faith, the trio purchased Blenda and turned their focus to specialty shakes. Their company, Blendid, served its first shake on August 4, 2013, in Burlingame.
