a message from brother ron As our faculty and staff catch their collective breath in the summer months and our graduates prepare to enter college, we all have time to reflect on the great successes of the 2014-15 school year. We are all very proud of the achievements of our students. They have been active and engaged members of a vibrant, faith-driven community.

Whether in the classroom, on service projects, in the theater, at the cathedral, or on playing fields, they have displayed their considerable talent and impressed us all.

In my first year as president, I have been impressed with the quality, concern and commitment of SHC’s faculty and staff, and the engagement and generosity of talent and time of our parents and donors. This is indeed a mission-focused community, and one of which the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers are justifiably proud. I can see a very bright future for SHC, and I am glad to be a part of it.

This issue of Second Century celebrates the Class of 2015 graduates who remain a part of our family as they join our proud community of alumni. Within these pages, we also connect our current students to the thousands of students that came before them by celebrating alumni who continue to bring their Lasallian and Vincentian values to the SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL PREPARATORY

he Annual Spring Gala, Club Monte Carlo, raised more than $225,000 for our students this year. “The SHC community is defined by our hard-working students, passionate faculty and staff, proud alumni, generous supporters and dedicated parents.

We were thrilled to see our entire community come together in support of this incredible school at Club Monte Carlo,”

SoPHIe KueHl ophie, the Class of 2015 Salutatorian, will begin her studies in philosophy at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo this fall. Her interest in bioethical law led to her chosen course of study. “With all of the new technology in medicine becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, we’re going to face a lot of controversial issues. I think going into law will be the best way for me to help others navigate those situations as we face them in the future. Bioethics will allow me to help others make responsible decisions regarding respect for human dignity.”

As a De Paul Scholar, Sophie has grown in her

understanding of both social justice issues and her role in the global community. De Paul Scholar Program Director Dr. Ken Hogarty ’66 served as both a source of support and inspiration to Sophie throughout her four years at SHC. “When my grandma passed, Dr. Hogarty told me that it was my responsibility to emulate the great person she was … and that I would be able to do it because I was lucky enough to have had her as a role model in my life. I’ll always remember his advice. He really is as wise as he seems!”

Sophie served as a staff member for the Oracle, SHC’s literary magazine, and Block Club. She considers her time on the tennis court with other teammates among her favorite memories at SHC. As she joins SHC’s proud alumni community, Sophie offers this advice to current students: “Explore new things, be yourself and stand up for what you believe in.”

GINo GReSH ecipient of the Caritas Award and the Robert West ’39 Loyalty & Service Award, Gino has served fellow SHC students through his leadership in Earth Action Club, California Scholarship Federation, as a service and immersion trip volunteer, Irish for a Day student ambassador, De Paul Scholar and Junior Varsity Boys Volleyball co-captain.

Gino will bring his passion for environmental protection and conservation to the University of California at Berkeley this fall where he plans to study environmental sciences,

forestry or wildlife biology. “I want to better the world with my own hands by working in protected lands, removing invasive plants and helping to stabilize endangered populations. My greatest desire is to use my degree to affect change by challenging what people think and how they act in relation to the environment—whether that’s through teaching or my interactions with every individual I meet.”

Gino views his experience at SHC as a practice run in the real world. “Students from multiple socio-economic, racial and political backgrounds surround me in every class. I’ve had the privilege of learning in an extremely diverse setting, and it has given me a taste of how the real world functions.”

BRuNo VAlAN hen Bruno heads to Duke University in the fall, he will bring with him the most important lesson that he learned in high school: “SHC taught me to stay humble and that anything is possible.”

Bruno looks forward to exploring issues in global health and medicine and environmental sciences. As a De Paul Scholar, reading Mountains Beyond Mountains by Paul Farmer sparked his interest in combating infectious diseases in developing countries.

“Being a De Paul Scholar has opened my eyes to the

importance of serving the global community … I believe service is essential to a happy world. I’ve learned the importance of seeing past my immediate environment and developing a critical awareness of what goes on outside of my bubble of reality.”

In addition to serving as a Block Club member and construction crew member for TEDxYouth@SHC, Bruno has played football throughout his four years at SHC. He served as team captain freshman and sophomore years and was a varsity starter during his junior and senior years. “My favorite SHC memories involve watching the state basketball runs and fighting it out against SI on the gridiron alongside my wolfpack of football brothers.”

A Path to the American Dream

Gates millennium Scholar, city of San francisco youth commissioner, Bourlag-ruan intern, class of 2015 Valedictorian, cross-country runner, kiva Student-leader, Block club member, first-generation, piro Scholar, community leader. when precious listana ’15 starts at the university of california, Berkeley, this fall, she will bring with her a long list of achievements, along with her character grounded in tenacity, faith, intellect, drive and humility.

hen the Listana family immigrated to the United States in 2005, they settled in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, a high-crime neighborhood known for its abundance of single-room occupancy hotels, transitional housing and homeless population. It is the type of place that tour guides advise visitors to avoid. Still, the American Dream always remained on the horizon for the Listanas.

“Growing up in the Tenderloin, you see the drugs, the prostitution, all of those vices every day. Life isn’t fair, but you have to choose to take advantage of the opportunities in front of you. This is the one message I want to share with other underprivileged youth: there are people out there who believe in you … you just have to believe in yourself.” Precious shares this advice with all of the humility and authenticity for which she is known, always

giving credit to the support system that helped guide her along the way.

Precious entered high school as a graduate of De Marillac Academy, SHC’s sister school. DMA provides tuition-free, quality Catholic education to its students in the Lasallian and Vincentian traditions, giving children from some of the most marginalized communities in San Francisco the opportunity to change their lives. Precious’ years at DMA undoubtedly helped lay the foundation for her high school success.

A longer school day incorporates a mandatory homework period and the presence of dedicated faculty and staff is a constant reminder to students that there is an adult community that cares about their success. Precious reflects, “When you arrive at school every morning, there is a teacher waiting at the entrance to shake hands with and greet every single student. This is

just one way DMA teaches you to be confident around adults, to not be afraid to ask questions, to have the courage to ask for help when you need it.”

Throughout her time at SHC, Precious inspired the school community through her academic, cocurricular and personal achievements. She was named the SHC Class of 2015 Valedictorian, the very first Piro Scholar to achieve the honor. She was an active member of student council, the Speech & Debate Team, Block Club, the California Scholarship Federation and Cross Country Team. She served as the San Francisco District 6 Youth Commissioner, and as a student-leader for the senior-level Kiva Service-Learning Project. Her work with Kiva helped develop vital relationships with two more mentors: SHC Instructor of Social Studies Abi Basch and Biba Kavass, a social studies teacher at Southwind High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Both Abi and Biba led their students on a trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation during the summer of 2014, a journey that inspired Precious to participate in the Global Youth Institute Conference hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation. She was later awarded a Borlaug-Ruan International Internship which will send her to India for eight weeks this summer to research agriculture and food security. “Ms. Basch and Ms. Kavass invested so much time guiding me through the application processes—including over winter break. I got so much support from them, they made it all doable. Their help made me realize how much the adults in my life believe in me, and I made it part of my goal to not only do it for myself, but for them too.”

Perhaps the greatest of Precious’ achievements thus far is her recent naming as a Gates Millennium Scholar. The GMS Class of 2015 applicant pool consisted of 57,000 hopeful high school seniors from across the United States. Precious is one of only 1,000 scholars awarded the prestigious honor, which distinguishes her as a Leader for America’s Future™.

Perhaps as important as the financial support is the network of fellow Gates Scholars that Precious will join, connecting her to other exceptional students. The goal of GMS is to promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students to reach their highest potential by reducing financial barriers for minorities, increasing representation of minority groups in certain academic disciplines and developing a diverse community of future leaders.

Precious’ long list of achievements has not affected her sense of gratitude, humility or obligation to her family and supporters. “I told my mom that it was my goal to make sure our family would not be hit by the financial burden of sending me to college. They have worked hard their entire lives for me and my siblings, it just always felt right to follow their example and work hard too.”

Precious remains closely tied to all of the communities that helped her develop over the years: the Tenderloin, SHC, De Marillac, St. Patrick’s Parish and the Boys & Girls Club. “I’m

SHC’s transformational Piro Program increases access to quality education for low-income San Franciscans and aims to end the cycle of poverty one family at a time.

The program is funded by the generosity of foundations, alumni and friends. In the fall of 2013, SHC partnered with Speratus Winery, a virtual winery whose proceeds fund scholarships at Lasallian schools. Speratus has helped to raise more than $35,000 in support of the Piro Program. Speratus offers high-quality wines produced by renowned Swiss winemaker Jean Hoefliger of AlphaOmega fame. Jean also serves as consulting winemaker for the following 2013 releases: The Debate—three single-vineyard, 100% Cabernet Sauvignons from Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper, To Kalon and Dr. Crane; Michel Rolland’s first Napa Valley wine; Red Hawk Tail; Sunshine Valley; and Audace Wines.

going to maximize the Gates scholarship and come back to my communities to share with them my own stories of empowerment. I’m so grateful for the scholarship and am one step closer to my dream of getting a PhD for not only myself, but for my family and my community.”

Precious hopes to return to her old neighborhood to start a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underserved youth open the doors to new opportunities and ignite their potential. “This is a recurring theme in my life: Someone has always believed in me and helped to guide me. I understand how important those people are to my development, and I want to shine that light onto someone else.

Helping young people discover their passions and guiding them toward their aspirations is my biggest goal.”

Basch shares, “Precious is an intelligent and driven young woman, but what makes her so special is her combination of compassion, integrity and self-discipline. She is deeply sensitive to the challenges

of her community and with every step she has taken to advance, she has reflected on how those advances might best benefit her community.

She is an expert advocate, unafraid to ask for help for herself and others—whether from her local Boys & Girls Club, teachers at DMA and SHC, or contacts at City Hall. She is

SHC Director of Student Support Angel-Max Guerrero sees Precious’ accomplishments as a reflection of an SHC education. “Her incredible success is a testament to the quality of her Lasallian Vincentian education and the efficacy of the Piro Program—the program works. We can’t wait to continue to celebrate her accomplishments as she goes on to Cal in the fall.”

Precious reflects: “I would not have been able to complete the Gates Millennium Scholarship process without such a loving, supportive community at SHC. All of my classes have prepared me to write application essays. All of my teachers were open to reviewing my application, and I received such warm support from the Piro team that ultimately drove me toward this accomplishment. I’ve never approached any challenge alone, and I am so grateful for all of the adults who believed in me. I love my Sacred Heart Cathedral family!” <

The Irish won four games by shutout, scoring at least 12 runs in all four. Five players batted over .300 led by Siobhan Murphy ’15 (.378) who also led in games played (27), hits (31), RBIs (18) and homeruns (2).

Morgan Monashefsky ’15 pitched the first perfect game in WCAL history against Archbishop Riordan on April 21. Freshman Baseball tied for second in WCAL at 10-4 (15-6 overall).

Track & Field

Boys Golf

The Irish swept Archbishop Riordan in two matches. George Stefko ’16 and Brendan Diaz ’17 advanced to CCS Regionals. Stefko was named Second-Team All-WCAL.

Boys Lacrosse

Goalie Cary Goeller ’15 was named First-Team All-WCAL. Peter St. Geme ’17, Jamie Gates ’15 and Tommy Franceschini ’16 were named Second-Team. Franceschini also gave an early verbal commitment as the first SHC lacrosse player to play for an NCAA Division 1 school (Bellarmine University).

Swimming

The Irish collectively broke six school records, including five boys varsity records (200 medley relay, 400 freestyle relay) and one JV girls record (50 butterfly). Alisa Nascimento ’17 broke the JV school record in the 50 butterfly.

Alex Poltoratskiy ’18 broke three individual records (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke) and swam two record-setting relays.

Boys Tennis

The Irish swept Archbishop Riordan in two head-to-head matches and won three others at the California Tennis Classic. Four players

Carolyn Scott ’17 finished in the top-five in both the 800 meter (fifth) and high jump (fourth) at WCAL finals. Jackie Foti ’16 (3200 meter, fourth) and Daija Mayfield ’16 (long jump, fifth) also had top-five finishes. Four frosh-soph and JV athletes finished in the top-four as well.

The Irish finished third in the WCAL (25-15, 7-5) and advanced to the WCAL semifinals before winning two matches in straight sets on the road in the CCS Division 3 playoffs before losing on the road to the top seed.

Home is Where Your Heart is

T

he road back home was long for LyRyan Russell ’97. In his two years playing at SHC, he led the Irish to a WCAL title and a WCAL title game loss. A McDonald’s All-American, Russell was highly recruited to play in college and chose to stay at home, playing for and graduating from the University of San Francisco.

His basketball-smarts and defense were invaluable to the Dons. Senior year as the starting point guard, he was third in the West Coast Conference in assists per game and

fourth in steals. After graduating from USF with a degree in sports medicine, Russell continued to pursue his hoop-dream, which led him across the world playing professionally for seven seasons in Germany.

SHC demands character, dedication, faith and hard work. It isn’t about winning— it’s about being accountable and being a good person.

He returned to San Francisco in 2009, picked up a whistle and began coaching young girls at the Mission Recreation Center. Russell recalls, “Training players, coaching and reffing allowed me to look at the game from different views.”

As Russell was building his coaching career, SHC’s girls basketball program grew into a national powerhouse. From 2000 to 2012, the team won six WCAL titles, 12 Central Coast Section titles, five Northern California titles, three state titles and a national title.

For someone with no prior high school coaching experience, leading

the SHC girls basketball team may have seemed impossible. Not to Russell. “SHC has great students, great coaches and a family atmosphere,” Russell beams when discussing why the program has been so successful.

“The players are fighters and love basketball, and coaches across all sports are incredibly supportive. SHC demands character, dedication, faith and hard work. It isn’t about winning—it’s about being accountable and being a good person.”

To long-time SHC basketball coach and Admissions Director Tim Burke ’70, Russell deserves a lot of the credit. “It’s important to LyRyan to ensure SHC and the basketball program are recognized for our excellence in academics, sport and character,” Burke says. “He has the ability to be tough and then the next minute he will have the girls laughing. This balance allows him to get the most out of his players. His attention to detail is second to none, and he is able to create a game plan that sets up his players for success.”

This past season, LyRyan was honored with three prestigious awards: CCS Coach of the Year by both the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News, and USF’s inaugural Father Stephen A. Privett Living the Mission Award. Characteristically, he shies away from the spotlight, “Being honored is extreme-

ly humbling because I don’t coach for awards,” Russell says. “I sincerely just want the players to get all of the accolades. It is because of their performance and hard work that I was recognized.

“Many local sports reporters expected this to be a down year for the Irish after graduating some top-caliber talent in 2014. The team opened the season just 2-5, playing a bold schedule against some high-level teams. Early struggles can often hurt the confidence of high school athletes, but not these.”

The team went on to win three

games against MaxPreps top-five nationally ranked teams and strung together eight straight wins en route to the school’s first ever Central Coast Section Open Division title.

He has the ability to be tough and then the next minute he will have the girls laughing.

They earned a dominating win over St. Mary’s, Berkeley, in the Northern California playoffs before narrowly losing on the road to the eventual state champion, St. Mary’s, Stockton.

Russell’s favorite moment was the CCS Open Division Championship win over Pinewood. The Irish were forced to come from behind and claw back into the game to pull off the upset. “You could see the confidence and growth of the team over the year,” Russell remembers proudly.

“They stayed poised, played together and fought, which are qualities that I want in my team.” <

Top of the Class

Alumni leaders continue to serve in medicine, education and science

Heralded as leaders and honored for their academic achievement and commitment to Lasallian and Vincentian values, valedictorians are also entrusted to inspire their fellow classmates with a final speech: the valedictory. From the Latin vale dicere, to say farewell, the speech marks the end of each student’s journey at SHC and the start of their lives as proud alumni. Valedictorians Filemon Dela Cruz ’94 and James Giovannoni ’81, and salutatorian Mary Kate Blaine ’96 credit SHC for creating the foundation upon which they built their careers as service-oriented leaders.

ven as the Class of 1994 Valedictorian and a De Paul Scholar with a rigorous honors and AP class schedule, Filemon Dela Cruz ’94 never viewed himself as a bright student.

He simply did what he was supposed to do. “I was good at regurgitating information, but Ms. Heidkamp and Dr. Hogarty encouraged me to synthesize information and develop my own conclusions—this was the most important lesson I learned at SHC.” When former Instructor of English Aileen Heidkamp asked sophomore Filemon to stay after class, he imagined the worst. “She had a reputation for being tough, so I was truly frightened.” To Filemon’s surprise, Heidkamp kept him after class to praise his well-written report on Watership Down. “It was the

first time I thought: I might be good at something.”

Filemon describes this as the most pivotal moment of his life, “I had never really believed in myself until then.”

In the early 1990s, SHC looked dramatically different than it does today. The new practice field on Gough and Eddy provided much-needed outdoor space for athletics and schoolwide activities. The Internet was a new idea yet to be implemented on campus.

“I remember learning about the Internet in Senior Seminar and it being described as a place you could visit to access information you would normally obtain by going to the library or opening an encyclopedia,” Filemon remembers.

As the yearbook copy-editor, he spent much of his time in a small room behind the library, then on the first floor of the La Salle building. “We used Word Perfect on a blue DOS screen, and I remember being so excited when we got laser printers … a huge improvement from the dot matrix printers we had previously used. I have such fond memories of being a part of the yearbook staff.”

As a senior, Filemon garnered acceptances to a few prestigious colleges—including MIT—and ultimately selected Reed College, a small liberal arts college in Oregon strong in sciences. He studied biochemistry and molecular biology at Reed, which at the time, was not much bigger than SHC. Selecting Reed for his undergraduate studies is a decision Filemon stands by today, “Getting a solid liberal arts education really was the best thing I could possibly do.” When making this important selection, Filemon held the positive influence from Heidkamp and Hogarty in high regard. “I wanted to make them proud,” he shares.

Filemon’s education at Reed ultimately led to a job at Oregon Health & Science University in pediatric bone marrow transplant research.

It was the perfect intersection of time and place—the late 1990s marked a new era of cancer therapeutics, and the OHSU was instrumental in developing a new drug that would transform

treatments for leukemia patients. Through his work at OHSU and his interactions with families and children affected by cancer, Filemon’s path became clear. “There was one child I remember in particular whose diagnosis, if it had come to me today, would certainly worry me because the treatments for his type of cancer are still lacking.” It is for patients such as him that Filemon strives to be a translational researcher, someone whose work in the laboratory directly translates to the bedside.

Today, Filemon serves as an assistant professor of pediatric oncology at Columbia University Medical Center. While he has been interested in science his entire life, ultimately, he counts his SHC English teachers as the most influential in helping him develop his passion for medicine and leading him on his path. “I can’t stress how important critical thinking and writing skills are in life. The research involves removing a portion of a patient’s tumor and growing it many times over in order to uncover which treatments are most effective at eradicating the cancer.

“We are just beginning to tap into the potential of precision medicine in pediatric oncology. I’m working to expand this work locally and nationally through the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, MIT, UCSF and through the construction of a national consortium.”

She has a master’s in clinical hypnotherapy, medical hypnotherapy and guided imagery. In her semi-retirement she enjoys aquatic exercise, movies, cooking classes, travel, volunteering for the Peninsula Stroke Association and visiting with her daughter, son-in-law and grandson in Austin, Texas.

Kathy Fields Cendak and her husband, Charles, have three children and five grandchildren. In 2013 Kathy received a medal for her participation in a 5K run prior to the start of the 2013 Boston

In her retirement, she enjoys cruise travel, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren. Her most memorable cruises have been to Brazil, the Amazon, the Egyptian pyramids and the fjords in Norway.

Helen Grima has two children and manages a print shop in Alameda. She enjoys gardening, scenic drives and going to casinos. Malta, Helen’s birthplace, is her favorite vacation destination.

Janet Hart Leone and her husband, Angelo, have two children and five grandchildren.

Janet graduated from Santa Rosa Junior College where she became a registered dental assistant. She went on to the University of California, Davis extension program, where she obtained her oral surgery certification. She retired after 40 years as a dental assistant in the San Francisco and Sonoma counties. Janet enjoys gardening, cooking, spending time with her grandchildren and volunteering for various Catholic organizations, namely the Italian Catholic Federation and Sons of Italy. While she and Angelo have traveled to Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and across the United States, Italy remains their favorite destination.

Joan Shaw Carmignani and her husband, Raymond ’63, have three children and four grandchildren. Joan attended San Francisco City College and received a Childcare Certificate for in-home childcare, which she did for 30 years until retirement in 2009. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, reading, knitting and crocheting. Her favorite travel destinations are Tahiti, London, Venice, Florence and Rome.

Patricia Shea Diner and her husband, Christopher ’65 have three children: Christopher ’91, Erin ’93 and Colleen ’03. They also have four grandchildren and another due in August. Patty graduated from San Francisco City College and retired from the California Academy of Sciences Library in June of 2011 after 27 years of service. Today, she volunteers at St. Anne of the Sunset Church, the California Academy of Sciences Library and the United Irish Cultural Center Library. She enjoys needlework,

Peggy Vorhis Lindstrom and her husband, David, have two children and four grandchildren. After graduation, Peggy went on to San Francisco City College before starting her career as a dental assistant and then as an escrow coordinator for Coldwell Banker’s Mill Valley office. She is loving every minute of her retirement and all of the free time to spend with her grandchildren.

She is a mosaic artist, mosaicking mirrors, vases, pictures, rocks, just about anything that might look good covered with broken china and stained glass.

She counts Italy among her favorite vacation destinations.

Richard Cairns has two children, Jeff ’89 and Shannon, and two grandsons. He graduated from Golden Gate University with a bachelor’s degree, attended the FBI National Academy and served in the United States Army from 1967-70, including two years in Vietnam.

After his service from 1970-2001 with the San Francisco Police Department, Rich retired as captain. He is CEO and owner of Cairns Group Security Co. Rich enjoys hunting and volunteering for the San Francisco Police League. His favorite vacation destination is Paris in the winter.

Chris. Jim served in the United States Navy from 1968-70. He attended San Francisco City College and received his BPA from the University of San Francisco.

He retired from the San Francisco Fire Department in 2007. He enjoys yoga, woodworking, hiking and golfing. His favorite vacations include Italy in 2011, Ireland in 2013 and Cooperstown, New York in 2014 to watch his grandsons play baseball.

Christopher Diner and his wife, Patricia Shea Diner ’65, have three children and four grandchildren with another one on the way. Chris attended the University of Nevada before moving on to the College of Marin in 1966. He served in the US Navy from 1967-70 and served on the USS Ticonderoga CVA 14 during the Vietnam War. He enjoys spending time with his family and volunteering at St. Anne of the Sunset.

Fred Fegan, a San Francisco Fire Department retiree and Sacred Heart Cathedral Hall of Fame member, and his wife, Karen, have two children, Jake ’89 and Cass ’92. They also have three grandchildren. The Fegan family is well known for their love of sports, especially baseball. Fred volunteers to oversee the Sonoma Valley Field of Dreams. He enjoys hiking, baseball and spending time with his grandchildren.

Gary Gignoux and his wife, Keri Mahaffey, have two children. Gary served in the US Air Force as an aircraft engine manager,

and received a Vietnam service medal for outstanding service. After 23 years he retired from the Air Force as a master sergeant in 1989 and then served as a Greyhound driver for four years. After 19 years as a postal letter carrier, he fully retired in 2013.

Raymond Guaraglia and his wife, Hazel, have two daughters and three granddaughters. He is a retired sheetrock, tape and drywall contractor. He purchased his first piece of real estate in Northern California at the age of 18.

He went on to acquire a few buildings in San Francisco and owns homes in Larkspur, Squaw Valley and Mendocino County. Ray’s many hobbies include hunting, skiing, road and mountain biking, stand-up paddle boarding, hot rods and collecting cars. His favorite trips include Jamaica, Grand Cayman, the Yangtze River, Russia, Mongolia, Hawaii, Namibia, Africa and France.

Norman Horn has two children and two grandchildren. He graduated from San Francisco State University and went on to receive an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. He has specialized training as an Emergency Medical Technician and as an Avalanche Instructor. Norm served on the Squaw Valley Ski Patrol for more than 30 years.

Today, he dedicates his time to fundraising and has raised $750,000 for Alhambra High School, Las Lomas High School and Walnut Creek Intermediate. He also leads a successful insurance agency. For more than 40 years Norm has served as a motivational sales trainer in the life insurance and financial services industry.

He is writing a book entitled, Tails of the Dragon Slayer, a recap on how to be successful in sales and training.

Norm enjoys skiing, windsurfing, mountain climbing, golf, kite sailing, auto racing and volunteering.

and Clo have three children: Christine, Joe ’92 and Patrick ’94. They also have five granddaughters and the oldest, Natalie ’18, is a current SHC student!

Joe received his BA from San Francisco State University and a teaching credential in 1978. He joined the California Army National Guard in 1966 and after decades of service, retired in 1993 from the Army Reserve. Joe began service in the San Francisco Police Department in 1969 and worked at Ingleside, Central and Mission station. Throughout his career, he served as a field training officer, Police Academy instructor, hostage negotiator, full inspector and sergeant in the Auto Theft Detail and Arson Task Force. He finally retired in 2001.

Joe enjoys golf, good literature and travel. He and Clo have traveled most of the lower 48 states and Alaska and Hawaii. They have been to Canada, Panama, Mexico, Italy, England, Austria, France and Ireland.

George Marania and his wife, Cecilia, have one child. From 1967-70, George served in the US Army initially as an aircraft engine mechanic and later as an aircraft inspector. He received a BS in aeronautical engineering from Northrop Institute of Technology in 1974.

Today, George enjoys keeping up with developments in engineering and science, taking advantage of the resources at the San Francisco Tech Shop, and learning CAD and CAM programming. George volunteers as the shell and equipment

manager for the Oakton High School Rowing Team.

Although he has traveled to many interesting places, he has found Ireland the most relaxing, Italy the most like California, and both child-friendly.

Paul Martens is widowed and has two children and five grandchildren. He has a degree in biology and chemistry from St. Mary’s College and received a master’s from San Jose State University in instructional technology and computer applications. He has issued eight US patents, three industrial products and five medical devices.

Before retirement Paul served as a medical device director of research and development engineering. Paul enjoys golf, travel, volunteering for Knights of Columbus, gardening and coaching softball for his granddaughters. While he has traveled all over the world, his favorite vacation destination is Maui, which he has visited 15 times!

He enjoys travel, volunteering at Good Shepherd Church and scuba diving. His travels have taken him to Hawaii, Italy, Spain, the Caribbean, South America, Alaska and throughout the United States.

Mike Morris and his wife, Carole, have two children and four grandchildren.

Mike received a bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco, and the Award of Achievement in Fire Science from San Francisco City College. He retired from the San Francisco Fire Department as assistant deputy chief

Anthony Musni retired in 2012 after 33 years of private practice in Pleasanton at the California Valley Care Medical Center as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Services. He enjoys ballroom dancing, though confesses that he still has two left feet. He volunteers at his parish, the Catholic Community of Pleasanton, St. Augustine and St. Elizabeth Seton Churches. He participates on the liturgical committee as a wedding coordinator, and is involved with the Knights of Columbus and Hospital Ministry. He and his wife, Myrna, count Italy as their favorite vacation destination.

Dominic Nuccio and his wife, Therese Ohlander Nuccio ’68, have two children.

He attended San Francisco City College and received a BS in civil engineering from San Jose State University. Dominic served in the United States Army Reserve as a sergeant. He currently serves as vice president of operations at Ghilotti Brothers, Inc. and was presented with the 40-year service award. Dominic enjoys restoring old cars, and his favorite vacation destination is Cancun, Mexico.

Louis Rago, and his wife, Lisa, have two children and five grandchildren. After high school, Lou received a BA in history and a secondary teaching credential.

Today, he is enjoying his retirement.

Edward Reinfeld and his wife, Shirley, have four children and 10 grandchildren. After high school, he attended San Francisco City College and later received FBI certification as a firearms instructor for the San Francisco Police Department. He served in the US Air Force, stationed in the United Kingdom, for four years, five months and 22 days.

He has participated in the Western States Police and Fire Arms Games and garnered three gold medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals in shotgun shooting. In his retirement, Ed enjoys skeet trapping, dove hunting, and is an avid coin collector. He counts cruises to the Mexican Riviera as his favorite travel destination.

Paul Tredinnick and his wife, Marilyn, have five children and nine grandchildren. After graduation, Paul served in the US Air Force at Travis Air Force Base from 1966-69 and later obtained a BA from Heald Business College.

He served in the audit department of Bank of America’s Corporate Services Division for 20 years before opening his own travel agency. Last October, he and Marilyn took two grandchildren, ages seven and nine, to Disneyland and he was amazed that he could keep up with them! He enjoys volunteering for

Redefining Disabled and travel to Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Canada.

James Williams is widowed; his wife, Rita passed away in 2008. He has three children and five grandchildren. James studied mechanical engineering at San Francisco City College and served in the US Navy, including time in Vietnam as a first class machinery repairman. He began a career in power plant maintenance serving at companies such as PG&E, Miran/GeON and B&W. He retired in 2009 and enjoys building cars and custom furniture.

Bob Williams and his wife, Jeanette, have two children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He received a BA in sociology and business from San Francisco State University and a master’s in rehab counseling. He served as a rehab counselor for 37 years. Bob was inducted into the Eureka Valley Hall of Fame, the oldest softball league in San Francisco. He served in the California State Department of Rehabilitation for 37 years and worked for 40 years for the San Francisco playgrounds.

Today, he enjoys his work at Kezar, Stern Grove and the playgrounds. He counts the Virgin Islands as his favorite travel destination.



While in DC, Karen reconnected with friend and former classmate, Amy Fischer Meir ’96. Amy attended the Air Force Academy after graduating from SHC, and today she serves as a major in the Air Force Reserve working at the Pentagon. Her husband, Jay Meir, also

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  8 Matthew McGeever graduated from SHC without honors, without tears, and without much of an idea as to why he was going to Sonoma State University. He just knew he wanted to travel and see how other people live.

From 2010-11, Matt guided excursions through remote areas of China and managed an adventure guiding company on an island in northern Vietnam until 2014. He traveled extensively in Asia and Europe and made other brief stops in the Middle East and Central America.

He is currently pursuing an MFA in film and television production at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts with an emphasis on directing and cinematography.

An SHC Education: The Greatest Gift Nearly two decades after Tracy Hom Keyser ’95 graduated from SHC, she made her very first gift to her alma mater.

F

or Tracy, the experience of having children of her own and navigating the elementary school system in search of the best fit for her kindergartener sparked a moment of clarity. “It really brought to light how the schools I’ve attended, particularly SHC, have influenced me over the years, even to this day. In my elementary school search, I also met many hopeful eighth graders who shared all of the great things happening at SHC. All of this inspired me to make a gift.”

After SHC, Tracy went on to attend the University of California at Los Angeles where she received a bachelor’s in English with a minor in accounting. She returned to the Bay Area and began her career in public accounting. Today, she is a partner at Realize CPA, LLP, a boutique accounting firm in San Francisco.

the skills and real life lessons I learned from these experiences are still the ones I carry with me today.

She reflects upon her time at SHC with great fondness, and remains grateful for the many instructors who aided in her development as a young woman. “I especially remember Mr. Pardini who supported me in my high school goal to be a journalist. He encouraged me to attend a conference in Washington, DC, and seek an internship. While I didn’t pursue journalism, the skills and real life lessons I learned from these experiences are still the ones I carry with me today.”

Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve was modeled especially well by former instructor of social studies, Karen Crawley, who taught a social justice course. “Her en-

thusiasm and compassion really changed my worldview. To this day, I still feel strongly about giving back to the community, and I still support many of the organizations where we volunteered during our time in that class.”

Tracy hopes her story inspires fellow alumni to give, no matter how many years have passed since their days at SHC. “There is no greater gift than a good education.

My parents provided this for me through SHC. As alumni, we should make sure SHC has the resources to continue to provide a comprehensive education to its current students and future graduates.”
