Wow! What a year! Congratulations to the Class of 2013 on what has been a remarkable four-year journey. The academic strength of the class is clearly displayed with the great number of scholarships earned and the list of prestigious college acceptances. This year there are 13 recipients of the Louis A. Meyer Award for Academic Excellence, that means 13 seniors earned a perfect 4.0 throughout their time at SHC—unprecedented.

One class does not make a student body. We have been blessed with a talented group of underclassmen who, with the seniors, have excelled in the classroom, on the field and court, and on the stage. The talent assembled here on Ellis Street makes the heart of this president soar! As sad as we are to see our seniors graduate, we are thrilled with the makeup of the incoming freshman Class of 2017. SHC had an incredible admissions cycle; I congratulate our admissions team for the excellent work on discerning who will be the future men and women of SHC. Throughout my days at SHC our culture of inclusivity has always been described with one word: family. It is an ageless term that resonates with every human being. No one is going to care for you more than your family.

The family is the central unit of our lives. No one will surpass the love and support offered by family members. Through our regular surveys, parents mention specifically how much they are welcomed and included in all aspects of life at SHC. They know that SHC has worked hard to ensure that every member of our community is treated as a precious gift from God. This is why our school is on a path of renewal and innovation. We only want what is best for the young people entrusted to our care, the SHC family. This is why we are introducing Physics First for freshmen next year, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) for the entire school population, and why we created our new STEM initiative, the Inquiry & Innovation Program.

The future of SHC has never been brighter. We are blessed with a dedicated faculty and staff, we are blessed with religious sponsors who care deeply about and unequivocally support our mission, and we are blessed to spend our days with the most incredibly smart, service-oriented, empathetic, fun-loving young people one could ever imagine.

LIP DUB A Love Letter to SHC

After nearly nine months of dreaming, planning and preparation, the Lip Dub Committee pulled off a monstrous undertaking on April 23: a single-take video of more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff—representing nearly 100 clubs, organizations, academic departments, sports teams, visual and performing arts groups and more.

The resulting 10-minute video of SHC Community members lip-syncing to the songs “Save Me, San Francisco” and “I Gotta Feeling” now has thousands of views on YouTube. Visual and Performing Arts Chair Francine Torres-Kelly called it “a love letter to SHC.” The goal of the student-run Lip Dub Committee was to try to have every group on campus represented in the video. The remarkable number of groups that participated make this video a spectacular and spectacularly accurate portrait of SHC. “It was the perfect representation of the school spirit we have at Sacred Heart Cathedral,” said Student Body President Brooke O’Leary ’13. Co-Director Sophie Cannata-Bowman ’13 added, “I was honestly so proud of the school community and how positively they reacted. The lip dub was what it was because of their enthusiasm and spirit.”

A sea of Fightin’ Irish green took over the school that day, covering the campus to create a path nearly a mile long for nine soloists to dance and sing along as they made their way in a single, unedited camera shot from the Collins Theater around the De Paul Campus, across Gough and Ellis, into the Pavilion and the La Salle Campus, up to the Library and back down to the fifth floor for a chills-down-your-spine finale.

Special congratulations and thank you’s go to directors Daniel McElroy ’13 and Cannata-Bowman and their dedicated committee of dozens for their excellent work and for shining a spotlight on the myriad talents and amazing school spirit of the Fightin’ Irish.

It was not until 2005-06 that the text “My colleagues will be my brothers” was updated to include women with “My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers.”

Fresh out of medical residency, Dr. Rose Lewis ’60 attended a national meeting for fellow plastic surgeons. A gentleman approached, inquired if she was indeed the Rose Lewis he had heard about, and when she confirmed, he said, “So, you’re the one!” It was at that moment, after four years of medical school at University of California, San Francisco, a year of medical internship at Mt. Zion, and another three years of plastic surgery residency in Phoenix, that she found out she was the first female African-American plastic surgeon in America. “I had no idea before that moment,” explains Lewis, “I wasn’t trying to break down barriers. I was just chasing my passion.”

Lewis’ passion for surgery fueled a long and successful career as a plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction and reduction. She joined forces with the one other woman from her surgical residency and started a private practice that she ran for 23 years until retirement. Thinking back on her successful, history-making career as a surgeon, she reflected on the formative effect of beginning her academic career at St. Vincent High School in the late 1950s. “St. Vincent High School was strong in science and academics,” she says. Lewis recalls gaining a particular edge from learning Latin in Sister Benedicta’s class. “Because of Latin,” Lewis explains, “I was able to decipher words from their roots, which really helped in the medical field.”

For another alumna, Alanna Nimau Vigil ’94, the teachers at SHC and her high school experience had a key role in her choice to pursue a career in the medical field. Vigil is now a clinical dietitian who works with dialysis patients in end-stage kidney disease; she also teaches nutrition online at University of California, Berkeley Extension and at Northeastern University. She explains that although she always had the interest, the medical field would have felt too daunting if not for the encouragement and support of the teachers at SHC. “Science and math didn’t come naturally and I didn’t think I’d pursue it, but the teachers helped me realize that I can do the work and do it well,” Vigil explains. “Brother Anthony in algebra, Mr. Pete Gresh ’72 in later math years, Coach Phil Freed ’80 in bio and anatomy, and Mr. Tom Farrell in physics— they encouraged all of us,” Vigil remembers.

However, it wasn’t only the teaching staff that helped to pave the road to her current career in the medical field. Her commute to school and her exposure to the sometimes gritty city that surrounded SHC were also factors.

“I lived in Pacifica and took public transportation to and from school,” explains Vigil. “With SHC being located in the middle of the city, we’d pass through some tough neighborhoods on our way—the Tenderloin, the Mission.

I’d see the homeless and the drug-addicted out on the street every day. In that very formative time of my life, I saw that people have problems and they are right here in front of me, and it didn’t scare me. It helped to remove the barriers that make people afraid of the marginalized,” Vigil reflects. “These are now the people I serve.”

The community service emphasis at SHC also laid the foundation for Mary Ann Sanchez Velasco ’95, who is a nurse educator and labor and delivery nurse in Madera, California, 20 miles north of Fresno. Her nursing career began in public health working in low-income areas helping with immunization education. Though she never thought she’d find herself in the small town of Madera, she found that after she had moved there with her husband, it offered more opportunities than she could have hoped for and helped her land the position she now finds so rewarding. After graduating from an accelerated nurse educator program at California State University, Fresno, she became involved in teaching at National University and ultimately found herself in the labor and delivery floor where she had always dreamed of working.

However, what Velasco feels most proud of is the role she plays in the community. “The patient profile at our hospital is largely low-income and Spanish-speaking,” Velasco explains. “I love it when a teenager comes in to witness a birth of a family member and they see me—a hard-working, successful Latina nurse, who speaks their language and understands their culture,” she says.

Jackie Bechelli ’07, a pediatric nurse at California Pacific Medical Center, also discusses the critical role that community service played in seeking a career in the medical field. “Nursing appealed to me because I love helping people,” she explains. “During clinical rotations,

I was drawn to pediatrics. I was fascinated by children’s abilities to cope with their health issues and heal better and faster than most adults I had witnessed.”

Bechelli is also quick to point out that SHC played an important role in sparking the interest in science that ultimately led her to the medical field. “Having Dr. Ramsey Musallam as my junior year chemistry teacher was the first time I really understood and enjoyed science,” she explains. “He made science cool.” She recalls how even after graduating, Musallam made himself available for her college chemistry final. “I will always consider him a mentor and friend,” she says.

For Irene Gardner ’03, it was SHC’s sports program that fueled her passion for the medical field. A member of the SHC girls volleyball and basketball teams, she recognized from an early age that she was involved in a very high level of play. “You begin to think about how to best take care of yourself while playing a sport in order to excel and be the most effective and efficient [athlete] as possible.” For Gardner, this translated into a passion for nutrition. Now a clinical dietitian, she sees patients one-on-one and teaches nutrition classes.

She lends her expertise to the Berkeley All Blues, one of the most successful womens rugby clubs in the nation.

In 2011, Gardner secured one of twelve spots on the USA Womens Rugby team and was recently named to the US Rugby 7’s World Cup team for 2013. She explains how she fits in training with her work as a dietitian. “I do my best to train while I work,” she says. By doing so, she knows she’s adding to the program by conditioning and training to be the best, healthiest player possible. “I’m making my teammates better by being better myself,” she explains.

These remarkable SHC alumnae have enjoyed diverse careers in the medical field, but share a common understanding that so much of what they have accomplished was started in the classrooms, gymnasiums and community of SHC.

Instructor of Science Does

More Than Just Talk

At SHC, Dr. Ramsey Musallam is the Science Department Chair, an Instructor of Science for chemistry and the Director of the Inquiry & Innovation Program. He is also an adjunct professor of education at Touro University and a father of two. His most recent title is TED Talk Speaker. Musallam appeared as one of eight speakers on PBS’ TED Talks Education, hosted by John Legend, when it premiered May 7, 2013.

The one-hour program brought together a diverse group of teachers and education advocates delivering short, high-impact talks on the theme of teaching and learning. Musallam graced the same stage as thought leaders including Geoffrey Canada, Bill Gates, Rita F. Pierson and Sir Ken Robinson.

Flames, propulsion and electricity were part of his talk, all safely demonstrated on video behind Musallam on the TED stage. He included a video of a student’s experiment, which she had conducted at home after being inspired by a lesson. In his words, “Student questions are the seeds of real learning—not some scripted curriculum that gives them tidbits of random information.” Musallam emphasized the need to engage students’ curiosity, and let their questions be a guide for teaching, “Questions and curiosity are like magnets that draw us towards our teachers. And they transcend all technology and buzzwords in education.”

Upon receiving his Doctorate in Multimedia Learning from the University of San Francisco, Musallam’s research interests shifted from a focus on technology in the classroom, to an emphasis on establishing learning environments grounded in inquiry, motivation and curiosity, using technology as a strategic classroom partner. In addition to the classroom, Musallam facilitates professional development experiences for teachers nationally and internationally, and is the host of the Infinite Thinking Machine, an internet TV show dedicated to spreading innovation and creativity to fellow educators.

Scott Bergen, Sports Communications Coordinator Greg Weinkauf ’13 began the presentation that he and his sister, Stella Weinkauf ’16, gave during Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration with these inspiring words, once spoken by his cousin, Jill Costello. Costello, a Saint Ignatius and University of California, Berkeley graduate knew something about realizing big dreams–she was the coxswain on Cal’s 2010 Pac-10 champion and NCAA runner-up Varsity 8 crew team, Pac-10 Athlete of the Year, and a Cal and NCAA Hall of Famer. But it isn’t just her prowess on the water that makes her such an inspiration.

In June 2009, Costello, just finishing her junior year at Cal, was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer that had spread to both lungs, her liver, breasts, ovaries and bones.

She was given approximately nine months to live. At that time, she dreamed of three great things: graduating, winning the Pac-10 and NCAA titles, and beating cancer.

She made the first happen, was edged out for the second, and despite passing away a month after her graduation in 2010, is still fighting to realize the last one through those she touched before her death.

“When she was diagnosed with lung cancer, we were all really shocked and of course wanted to do whatever we could to support her,” said Costello’s sorority sister, Darby Anderson. “In November of that year, Jill and I contacted the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation about doing an event at Berkeley to support Jill and also raise some funds. Over the next couple of months the two of us organized the first Jog for Jill and it was a huge success!

We raised over $45,000 that first year with over 1,000 participants. It was the largest lung cancer event that had ever been held up to that date.”

After Costello passed away later that year, Anderson went to work with the foundation full time so that she could make the most of her friend’s legacy. In fact, she

helped found Jill’s Legacy, a nonprofit that works within the umbrella of the Lung Cancer Foundation to raise money for research.

Costello’s high school friend, Kelcey Harrison, also spoke at SHC’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, telling how she was inspired by Costello to take up the fight against lung cancer. In July of 2010, a month after Costello’s passing, she set out on a 3,500 mile, crosscountry run from New York City to San Francisco to raise money and awareness for lung cancer, completing the journey in just over four months.

“Never, ever underestimate yourself,” Harrison encouraged the SHC students at the assembly and her words in turn, inspired others to take up the task of helping Costello reach her final goal as well.

SHC’s softball team decided they would raise money to support the Lung Cancer Foundation and participate in the 2013 Jog for Jill, the fourth iteration of a campaign started by Costello herself during her senior year at Cal. Head softball coach Pat Dunne ’98 speaks proudly of how it wasn’t the coaches or teachers who told the girls to get involved.

“Julia Gallegos [’14] found me right after [the assembly] and told me some of the veteran girls thought it would be a good idea to form a team to support Stella and her family, and the Lung Cancer Research Foundation. It would also be a good team-building activity where we would work toward something together, completely unrelated to softball. We raised $4,825,” Dunne said proudly.

“Our young women were energized in raising funds and awareness while having fun, building community, showing love and support for Jill’s family and friends, and representing SHC with determination and grace,” wrote SHC Service Learning Coordinator Julia Rinaldi in an email to the faculty and staff shortly after the event.

work, Rinaldi is quick to differ with Dunne on the role that the coach played. “[Coach Dunne’s] excitement about this project and his respect and admiration for the young women who created and got beyond this goal were greater than any victory I have seen from a coach in all my years of teaching. It was beautiful, and the type of leadership that teaches graduates ‘to serve!’”

Just days after the 2013 Jog for Jill, Weinkauf and her teammates took on SI on the diamond and the Fightin’ Irish won 4-3 in dramatic fashion on a walk-off hit in the seventh inning. The upset win was especially moving for Dunne because of the ties the team had formed with the Saint Ignatius community during the fundraising.

“I think the Jog has had an incredibly positive impact on the girls,” Dunne said. “It made them be a part of something greater than themselves and that gave them some perspective. The quiet way in which they went about their business was a joy to watch because it wasn’t about them individually, it was about making a difference, as small as it may seem. They were incredible. It made them love each other, feel good about themselves, and do some real, worthwhile service where they saw the results in action.”

The team is already looking forward to the 2014 Jog for Jill. Dunne has assigned Weinkauf the responsibility of setting the team’s goal and managing their fundraising, tasks which she accepted excitedly. This year they surpassed their own goal by nearly 25% so the bar is set high.

“I’ve never been so proud of a team or a group of young people I’ve been involved with than I am with this group,” beamed Dunne. “They really are exceptional young women who have incredibly bright futures and will make our school proud in whatever they choose to do. They are an example of what we all at SHC strive to be in terms of selflessness and service. This was a grassroots project led by the girls, and they deserve all the credit and recognition for their incredible contribution to Lung Cancer Research. They came up with this plan, executed it and went beyond, and have really just lit the fire that exists within them for service. I can’t wait to see what they do next year!”

Costello’s dream of beating cancer is still alive in people like Anderson and Harrison, as well as Dunne, Weinkauf, Gallegos and their teammates—the ones among us who didn’t underestimate themselves.

“Despite being faced with major adversity,” Anderson recalled warmly, “Jill’s positivity, joy and enthusiasm were infectious. Her joy spread like wildfire and people wanted to be around her and to feel that positive energy.

She was an amazing woman and you can see that by how she still continues to inspire millions around the world.”

Female Athletes Stepping Up to the Next Level Courtney Wong ’13 Volleyball • Menlo College Wong was a three-year varsity performer with the Irish, and a two-year captain as the starting outside hitter. As a junior, Wong led the team in kills and earned WCAL first team honors and a spot on the MaxPreps California All-State second team. As a senior, Wong made the WCAL second team and was named the San Fran Preps “Player of the Year,” along with earning a spot on the 2012 Under Armour Watch List and AVCA Elite Rising Senior list.

Tyhana Cooper ’13 Track and Field • California State University, Sacramento Cooper is a two-time WCAL champion in the shot put, winning league in her sophomore and junior seasons, and placing second as a senior. She holds the school and WCAL finals records in the shot put at 42’11”. She is a three-time CCS finalist in the event, placing second as a sophomore and top-8 all three times. She qualified for the state finals twice, earning top-20 finishes both times.

Briannah Smith ’13 Basketball • Concordia University Smith averaged over 10 points per game in her senior season and helped lead the Fightin’ Irish to a WCAL championship. She’s top seed in the CCS Open Division playoffs, and a Northern California regional championship and California state runner-up. Smith was the team’s defensive stopper, typically guarding the other team’s best player, and was also a member of back-to-back CCS Division 3 championship teams in her sophomore and junior years.

Amanda Lee ’13 Volleyball • Dominican University of California Lee, another three-year varsity player, was a first team All-WCAL and All-City selection and MaxPreps AllState second teamer in her senior season as libero for the Fightin’ Irish. She was a starter on the 2011 CCS Division III championship winning team and named All-WCAL and on the MaxPreps All-State first team in her junior year. She was also named to the 2012 Under Armour Watch List and AVCA Elite Rising Senior list.

It’s hard to not get excited for the future of Sacred Heart Cathedral’s football program when you spend even just a minute talking with Ken Peralta ’79. When word got around campus that Peralta had been hired to take the helm of the program, a buzz was in the air.

Peralta has coached football for more than 30 years, including seven as head coach at Marin Catholic, where he won four Marin County Athletic League titles, two North Coast Section titles, and advanced to the sectional semifinals or finals in six of seven years.

His track record of success on the field is based on much more than just his expertise with X’s and O’s, however.

“The hiring of Ken will not only be a huge asset for the football program, but for the entire school as he possesses skill sets that extend far beyond the football field,” said Athletic Director Phil Freed ’80. “I am excited to be able to work with someone such as Ken, who has had such great success both on and off the field with the student-athletes that he has coached over his career.”

Peralta’s infectious positive outlook and teamfirst attitude won’t be only impacting the football players. He will also join the staff as an instructor in the Religious Studies department. Peralta was also a member of Marin Catholic’s longstanding Kairos retreat program, which was just brought to SHC in 2012.

“Ken understands the importance of football being an integral part of the bigger school community,” said Director of Community Life Greg Schmitz. “But he is also very committed to ensuring all his football players

are involved in Community Life activities and has already offered to be a leader on Kairos retreats.”

Besides his involvement away from the sidelines, expectations are high for what Peralta will bring to the football team. After taking over as the head coach at Archbishop Riordan High School, he led the Crusaders to an undefeated WCAL championship and an appearance in the Central Coast Section final in 2000 before taking over as the offensive line coach at Cabrillo College for two years.

In 2003, Peralta took over as head varsity coach at Marin Catholic, establishing the Wildcats as a dominant force in the MCAL and NCS, and led them to the CIF Division III State Championship bowl in 2009. He stepped down as head varsity coach a year later to become the head freshman football coach at MC in order to spend more time with family, including his son, recent SHC alumnus Jerry Peralta ’13 and daughter, Elaine Peralta ’16. Marin Catholic’s freshman team went 25-2 with Peralta at the helm.

Peralta capitalizes “WE” in all of his communications with the team and staff at SHC and explained why in a recent note posted to the team’s message board: Remember that you are loved by many but you must never take that love for granted. WE all need to hustle for each other. WE all need to hustle for our families. WE all need to hustle for our program. WE all need to hustle for our team. WE all need to hustle for our school. WE all need to hustle for the SHC community. WE all need to hustle for God. It's always a WE thing. Every phase of your life. The quicker WE figure this out, the more rewarding your life will be.

Freshman year is an overwhelming time—and not just for our students. You as parents, too, are in a new place with new people. You left a school where you understood the expectations, you were involved, you had friends, you knew the schedule and you had developed strong relationships with the faculty and staff. Suddenly you are not sure how to spend your time, what to prioritize, what is expected of you and with whom to connect. Not to mention you also have to manage all of the new things your freshman child must be feeling and experiencing.

As a parent, the transition to high school can be a mind-boggling experience. At the initial parent meetings you hear how much we want you to be involved, to be a part of your child's high school experience and a part of this community. You are told that one of the best ways to get involved is through the many volunteer opportunities we have for parents and alumni, but where do you even begin?

Unlike many other schools, SHC has no requirement of volunteer hours for parents. It is our hope that volunteering comes simply from the will to do so. Yes, volunteering can be just showing up and working for a couple of hours. At SHC however, we feel it can be much more than that. It is an opportunity to be involved in this community and build connections with others. With more than 25 organized volunteer opportunities per year, in addition to the countless opportunities to get involved with the sports teams, performing arts, clubs, field trips

and student activities, there is sure to be a fit for your time and talents.

Although students may hit the ground running, our parents have the chance to ease into freshman year. We do not expect you to chair an event or participate in every activity as soon as you arrive. You may choose to start off by volunteering for one of the less-demanding opportunities, such as the summer mailing, driving your student’s new teammates to a tournament or stopping by the Walkathon, where each year we have nearly 100 current and past parent volunteers.

Sophomore year begins and you’re feeling ready to take on a bit more. You recall your first few weeks at SHC, only one year ago, and how exciting or nerve-wracking it may have been. You decide to take part in the New Parent Reception to welcome others into the community, just as you had been welcomed by parents and alumni before you. There you may meet parents of upperclassmen, who ask you to be a part of the Parents Association concession booth at the Bruce-Mahoney football game, a longstanding tradition. At the game you realize that by being with other parents, alumni and parents of alumni you gain a deeper connection to the school and have become more engaged in your student’s experience.

Suddenly two years have passed and your student is now a junior. You have met a variety of other parents through sports teams, clubs or activities. This year, some of you sign up together to assist with one of SHC’s blood drives and join one of the many Spring Gala committees.

Then in the blink of an eye, it is your student’s senior

year. You have a strong community of fellow parents with whom you have developed lasting friendships. You sit on bleachers together at games and you all get a table at the annual Super Bowl Crab Dinner. You have chaperoned dances and gone to the parent/student events. Now that you’ve learned the ropes, you decide to take on a leadership position at the Spring Gala or even on the Parents Association Board.

Being a part of these activities seemed daunting and timeconsuming several short years ago, but you took your time, started small, took on what you could and provided your energy and talents. You also realize that even after your child graduates, you have found a home at SHC and you hope to create a tradition for you and your family to continue volunteering just as you saw other parents of alumni doing these last four years.

“Enter to learn, Leave to serve” is the motto that we recite over and over to the young men and women of SHC. We provide limitless opportunities for service and involvement for the students ranging from seasonal blood and clothing drives and meal service at local shelters to full-week immersions in some of our country’s most in-need communities like Salinas, New Orleans and the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. Year after year the parents, parents of alumni and alumni of the SHC community come together to support the students in these efforts financially, spiritually and emotionally. In my time as the event fundraiser and volunteer coordinator here at SHC and as a Parents Association liaison, I realize that the passion for service extends beyond the students. Many parents of SHC spend four years and more learning about their children, the school, the alumni and each other all while spending time serving others.

To the many parent volunteers, past, present and future: Thank you for your time, for your engagement with this community and for the example you are setting for the students who “Enter to learn, Leave to serve.” Whether it is one hour of time or many months of work, opportunities to volunteer are endless and truly make an impact on all of us!

2013 Lasallian Vincentian Alumni Award Recipients Every other year, the Lasallian Vincentian Alumni Award is given to a graduate of St. Vincent, Sacred Heart, Cathedral or SHC who demonstrates extraordinary dedication and loyalty to the church and to the Lasallian/Vincentian community; a person who demonstrates a strong commitment to the charisms of our Founders, St. John Baptist de La Salle (founder of the De La Salle Christian Brothers) and St. Vincent de Paul (founder of the Daughters of Charity along with St. Louise de Marillac); a person who demonstrates a commitment to living a life of faith, service and community; and a person who ministers with compassion, mildness, cordiality, respect and devotion. This year, Sacred Heart Cathedral honors two people who live their lives committed to the mission, Russell Gumina ’62 and Agnes LaRiviere Ternasky ’62.

Russell Gumina’s story begins on Stockton Street in North Beach, where he was raised with his brother and sister. Growing up, he attended the Salesian Boys’ Club, a formative place of his youth, which nurtured his lifelong love of sports and honed his talents. Gumina considered the Salesian Boys’ Club his home away from home—a home that he would revisit to give back much more than he ever took. “My dad always told me, ‘It doesn’t matter how successful you become in life if you forget where you came from.’ I have taken that to heart over the years and have always tried to give back Russell Gumina ’62

to programs that have been meaningful in my life,” Gumina said.

After graduation from Sacred Heart High School in 1962, Gumina was recognized for his outstanding athletic prowess and was awarded a four-year basketball scholarship to the University of San Francisco. Gumina competed at USF during the “glory years” and received numerous accolades during his time there. After graduation in 1966, he was drafted by the Boston Celtics, but turned it down for an academic scholarship to the University of San Francisco’s School of Law to continue his education.

During this time, the country was embroiled in the Vietnam conflict. Gumina felt he should take part.

After one year of law school, Gumina left USF and joined the 5th JAG Military Law Center Reserve Unit.

Upon the completion of his military service in 1969, Gumina came home. He was offered a staff position at

the Salesian Boys’ Club, and remembering the positive experience of his youth, he readily accepted.

In addition to working at the Salesian Boys’ Club as assistant director and ultimately executive director, Gumina also taught at Sacred Heart Grammar School.

In 1981, he was awarded the Miriam Joseph Farrell Award for Outstanding Grammar School Teacher in the Western Region of the United States. Along with coaching and teaching, Gumina continued to serve in the Active Army Reserve and served for 25 years with the 5th JAG Military Law Center in the Presidio.

When he made the move from assistant to executive director in 1988, Gumina sought to merge the Boys’ and Girls’ clubs and develop a substantial scholarship assistance program. The club officially became the Salesian Boys’ & Girls’ Club in 1994. Gumina has helped bring the club’s scholarship endowment up to 1.4 million dollars. In recent years, the club has been

able to award $120,000 annually in financial assistance to deserving members.

For the last 10 years, Gumina served as a Board of Regents member at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory and on the Building Committee to plan for the school’s new gymnasium. “The Sacred Heart Cathedral saying ‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve’ is a saying that paraphrases my commitment to working with youth,” Gumina shared. Among other honors, Gumina was admitted into the San Francisco Prep Athletic Hall of Fame, the Sacred Heart Cathedral Athletic Hall of Fame, University of San Francisco Hall of Fame and North Beach/Marina Hall of Fame at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club. Gumina also received the Fr. Oreste Trinchieri Award for his dedication to the Salesian Boys’ & Girls’ Club in 1999 and was the proud recipient of the Anthony Barbieri Humanitarian Award in 2005 given by the Italian American Community.

Agnes LaRiviere Ternasky ’62 has also led a life of serving others on both a local and international scale.

After graduating from St. Vincent High School in 1962, she began her post-secondary education at St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, but left soon after to start her family.

After raising three beautiful boys, Ternasky went back and received her BSN. She started her career at Kaiser as a nurse’s aide, but soon was part of an exciting team that set up and opened each new department created at Kaiser.

Ternasky spent most of her career at Redwood City Kaiser and Kaiser San Jose. Eventually, she settled into pediatric and adult oncology, neurosurgery rehab and ultimately hospice work. She later tried her hand at public health, working with TB nursing, high-risk and drug-

addicted infants, and helping with suspected elder abuse court cases.

While midcareer, Ternasky discovered her passion for disaster relief work when mudslides ravaged the Southern California coast. “I made sure a neighbor would be at my house when the boys came home from school, then I put a shovel in the car and went to help,” Ternasky recalled. “By the end of that week, the Red Cross recruited me to help with future disasters.”

She was hooked.

Although she continued her work as a hospital nurse, she found herself only taking positions contingent on being able to leave for a week or two in the event of a level 5 disaster. Ternasky worked as a disaster-relief health services provider through the Red Cross, trained in damage assessment and art therapy. She did relief work in New York during 9/11 and New Orleans during Katrina, among others. But some of her most rewarding memories were the trips where she was able to work with the children affected by the disaster.

When the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan in 2011, Ternasky played an important role in working with the children affected by the disaster. “We set up a nursery school and day schools,” Ternasky

recalled. “I brought a suitcase full of art supplies and butcher paper and put them on the walls. I encouraged the children to show how they were feeling. I helped them understand it’s OK to be mad at this.”

“I cannot say there was ever a boring time in my career, either in paid work or in volunteerism,” Ternasky said. She credits her love for service to her schooling at St. Vincent’s and the Daughters of Charity. Ternasky had a difficult youth and the Daughters of Charity gave her the support she needed to make it through. “They helped me to work out my tuition in the office or kitchen and helped me find jobs in babysitting, house cleaning and ironing so I could help my sister manage our expenses,” she said.

“They helped me so much when I was young, I always knew that when I could, it would be time to give back.”

The award presentation took place on April 30, 2013, at St. Mary’s Cathedral during the Founders Day Mass celebration. The entire SHC community congratulates Gumina and Ternasky and thanks them for their generosity and time devoted to making the community a better place.

1963—milestone Rupert Jung has called Red Bluff, California, home for more than 30 years. He is retired and spends time with his five grandchildren whenever he has the opportunity. He recently attended his Gold Diploma event, where he celebrated his 50th reunion with fellow classmates.

1970 Valerie Quigley Mackey lives in Sacramento and works for the state of California.

1971 Robert Davis, fine arts artist living in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, stopped by campus on April 4. It had been more than 40 years since he visited his alma mater. He vividly remembers his high school days when he was a member of the championship Fightin’ Irish baseball team.

1976 Michelle Tapia received the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center’s Hands and Heart Award on March 27, 2013. This award recognized her work with veterans and her dedication to providing the highest standards in patient care.

1991 Scott Hurley, a SWAT team member, has worked for the San Francisco Police Department for more than 12 years. He lives in San Mateo.

Frank Lavin lives in San Rafael, California. He is an advisor in the financial services industry.

Franco Finn enjoyed his five years at SHC as the director of alumni relations and looks forward to his new position as the teammate engagement and communications specialist for Virgin America. He will be working at their headquarters in Burlingame, California. He says that he will always be a “proud alum of SHC” and continue to stay active and involved as an Alumni Council member. Franco will also continue his role SHC’s Spring Gala auctioneer as well as the “HypeMan”/MC for the Golden State Warriors.

1973—milestone Wanda Ramos is back in San Francisco after living in the Midwest for some time. She and her husband, Eddie, visited Texas in February for his 60th birthday. At the end of the year, they plan to go to Normandy, France, for vacation and to visit some relatives.

Derek Byrnes is the varsity women’s coach and director of competitive rowing for Oakland Strokes. He recently coached boats that swept the Southwest Junior Crew Championships with first place in each of the three 8+ Grand Finals heats. This summer he is once again off to Nationals with the Strokes.

Marco Donaldson and his wife Karen welcomed their first son, Damien, born on April 5, 2013, in San Francisco.

Damien weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounces and was 18.5 inches long.

Melissa Amato is the sales manager for the Holiday Inn at Fisherman’s Wharf, part of the Intercontinental Hotel group. She has worked for the company for the past four years. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 2008 with an emphasis in Hospitality Management.

2005 Donna Kim is pursuing a career in makeup and fashion in New York City.

Keira Rowland moved to New York City to pursue a career as a makeup artist. She works at MAC cosmetics and had the opportunity to participate in New York Fashion Week.

Alumni news Emily Sims lives in Los Angeles. She has also flown to New York several times to work on makeup-related events.

Scott Taylor currently resides in San Diego, California, where he has been working for the San Diego Padres in business development for the last three years. He hopes to move back to the Bay Area and work in either development or sponsorships for any of the local college sports teams.

2006 On April 11, Rudy Delgado came on campus to do a presentation on suicide awareness for Ms. Julia Rinaldi’s classes.

Charles “Chip” Northrop is currently studying International Business at San Jose State University and playing soccer for the school. Fluent in French and Spanish, he hopes to graduate in 2014 and find work with an international company where he can use his language skills. After graduation in ’10, he went to Richmond International University in Leeds, England, for two years and played soccer in the lower division of the Football Association (FA) League. He also got an FA coaching license. He coaches young kids and plays with the SF Seals Academy under 23 team during the summer.

2011 Amy Lunde is studying at Azusa Pacific University, and is currently doing clinical rotations at the Queen of the Valley Hospital on the labor and delivery floor. She plans on finishing her nursing program in May 2015.

Oliver Reyes is at St. Mary’s College, where he recently played the male lead role in their latest production, Spring Awakening, performing with Arianna Tolentino ’12.

2012

Patrick Kealy graduated with an MA in Sports Management from University of San Francisco last May. He currently is interning for the San Francisco 49ers in their Alumni Relations office and is helping to gather memorabilia for the new stadium. He is also a Special Events intern for the Golden State Warriors.

2008—milestone Eric Pagan is in New York City pursuing an acting career.

2009 Jerry Brown visited SHC on March 25, 2013, during his spring break. He graduated from Fresno State University in May with a degree in Communications. He still has one more year of eligibility to play NCAA basketball and hopes to pursue his master’s degree during that time.

Stephanie Lalanne made her television debut on Oxygen’s The Face.

2010 Anthony Bushong will be finishing college early at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in December 2013, with a degree in Political Science and a double minor in Digital Humanities and Film & Television.

Arianna Tolentino just finished her freshman year at St. Mary’s College as a Performing Arts Scholar. She played the main female lead role in St. Mary’s rock musical production, Spring Awakening.

LEFT: Vance DeVost ’65 at the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 19, 2013.

Vance DeVost ’65 was inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame on May 19, 2013. He was recognized for his athletic accomplishments in basketball while he was a student at Sacred Heart High School from 1961-1965. He was honored to have in attendance his classmates and Coach Jerry Phillips. DeVost was a starting guard on the 1964 championship basketball team and received All-City distinguished honors that season. He was selected to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament Team and the 1965 All-City first team. After graduating from SH, he entered the military and played for the United States Air Force Hamilton AFB team from 1965-1969. He later played at San Francisco State University on two league championship teams, earning All-Conference honors all four years, and then played semi-pro basketball with the San Mateo Suns.

Ebony McKeever ’13 was the recipient of the Elwood China Lang Memorial Scholarship on May 19, 2013. She received accolades for her high school accomplishments both academically and as an athlete. She was voted SHC’s 2012 Outstanding Girl Sprinter, after taking second in the WCAL 400 meters; anchoring SHC’s 4 x 100 relay 5th place; 4x 400 meter relay third place; and third place 400 meters at Central California Championships.

McKeever will be attending Georgetown University in the fall where she is majoring in biology.

Will You Leave a Legacy?

Each year SHC receives generous estate gifts from friends like you. If you remember our students in your will or trust you leave a legacy that helps us continue to do the work that we all value.

Why Should You Include a Charitable Gift in Your Will or Trust?

• • •

It’s simple. It can be as easy as including language stating, “I give $25,000 to Sacred Heart Cathedral.”

You can change your mind. During your lifetime, you can amend anything you choose; i.e., beneficiaries, amounts, etc.

There may be tax benefits. Gifts to qualified charitable organizations reduce the value of your estate for estate

tax purposes.

How you include a gift in your will or revocable trust depends on what you want to accomplish and what you want to give to SHC. Here are some options: • • •

Give a percentage of the residue of your estate—the amount left after taxes; e.g., “I give 25 percent of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate to Sacred Heart Cathedral.”

Give a specific dollar amount or item of property; e.g., “I give Sacred Heart Cathedral $25,000”; or “I give Sacred Heart Cathedral 100 shares of IBM stock.”

Make your bequest contingent; e.g., “I give Sacred Heart Cathedral $25,000 if my niece and nephew predecease me.”

Besides choosing how your bequest will come to us, you also have a say in how it will be used: • • • •

Make the gift unrestricted; i.e.,—the school determines the best use for the funds.

Make the gift restricted; i.e., to support a specific area of interest such as scholarships.

Accreditation Time Again, Already?

How time flies! We are anticipating another successful renewal of our accredited status with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA). In 2008, we received the highest recommendation possible—a six-year accreditation status—and we are been busy preparing for our 2014 visit. We're once again well into a productive self-study involving representatives from all facets of the community, including faculty, students, families and board members, as we prepare to welcome the visiting team next March. We are proud to display our commitment to excellence and continued growth by consistently maintaining the highest possible secondary school rating since WASC was founded in 1962.
