A Message from President Scudder We continue our yearlong celebration of the 25th anniversary of the merger of Sacred Heart and Cathedral high schools. It has been a great walk down memory lane, remembering life on Ellis Street in the mid-’80s. For me, it has brought back many fond memories of my days as a teacher and coach, followed by years as dean of students. Looking back, we owe a deep sense of gratitude to then Brother Philip Clarke, FSC, and Sister Joan Gibson, DC, whose devotion and dedication to the mission and to the schools were the cornerstone of what would become Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. It was a bold move, it was a risk, but in the end, it was the visionary and transformative step that lives out every day in the hearts of thousands of students who graduated or will graduate from SHC. Enjoy the history, but remember, while SHC has a storied past to celebrate, it is more important that we focus on the bright and hopeful future that awaits this great school. It is hard to believe that we are in the process of evaluating applications for the Class of 2017. I’m confident that the SHC of today will provide the rigorous course of study that will prepare these students for college, and more importantly, and I’m confident that SHC will provide the emotional and spiritual support that will prepare each member of the Class of 2017 for life. God bless everyone who has brought us to this day and God bless our next 25 years!

GROWTH

The Creation of a Modern Urban Campus

Sitting anxiously in a drafty fifth-floor classroom in 1980, we were just waiting for the word. Finally, the announcement came over the intercom from Brother Arnold. “Students in room 505, please pick up your desks and proceed slowly and carefully down the stairway and into the yard.” Over the previous two years my classmates and I had witnessed the slow ascent of the sparkling new school building right across Willow Alley. While our adolescent minds had more important issues to tackle, the construction project unfolding in our backyard did create a palpable energy and feeling of anticipation on campus.

We young men of Sacred Heart High School were now feeling our oats.

Little did we realize that day, when we carried our desks across the newly created plaza and into today’s Lasalle academic building, that we were part of a watershed moment in the history of our great school. The next three decades would see unprecedented growth and development, as our beloved, historic downtown campus was transformed into a modern coeducational oasis.

After the opening of the new academic building and the demolition of the old school on Ellis Street shortly thereafter, a new campus vision began to percolate. As the landscape of Catholic schools and the population of San Francisco began to change, the strategic advantages of a merger became clear. Principals Brother Philip Clarke and Sister Audrey (Joan) Gibson formalized the merger of Sacred Heart and Cathedral High Schools in 1987 and the facilities were combined. Cathedral’s modern campus would serve the new coeducational population well and only help buoy the need for expansion across the street.

With energy from a blossoming Development Office and newly formed Board of Regents, the practice field was built in 1990 at Gough and Eddy Streets at the former site of Cathedral Grammar School. In 1993 a master facilities plan was created, and soon thereafter talented local architect Ron Case was hired (his inspiring sense of space, light and material would define the modern SHC campus). Using student

walkathon funds, a grand entrance and gateway at the corner of Gough and Ellis was created in 1994. SHC’s first major capital fundraising effort, directed by Principal Br. Christopher Brady ’70 and board chair Frank Rollo ’58, resulted in the opening of the beautiful Herbst Library and Information Center on the newly created sixth floor of the Lasalle academic building in 1996. The school’s first eight-figure capital fundraising effort, led by board chair Marty Monfredini ’70 and campaign chairs Mike Kelly ’69 and Bill Barulich ’68, resulted in the opening of the spectacular Daughters of Charity Foundation Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center in 2004. The school’s state of the art Fitness Center was opened in 2006, thus completing the 1993 master facilities plan.

Ron Case’s firm (CaseAbst Architects) helped develop a new master facilities plan in 2006 (the 2020 Vision Campaign), and one priority was to better meet the needs of a thriving performing arts program. Once again, due to the leadership of board chair Jim Ryan and Building Committee chair Will Spencer ’65 and the overwhelming generosity of many committed investors, SHC dedicated the stunning Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater in October 2010. Currently underway on the Lasalle Campus is the construction of the Coach Pilara Batting Facility, a fully enclosed 2,800 square foot structure that will include lighting, a turf playing surface and a flexible netting configuration.

In total, the school has invested more than $43 million in new or updated facilities over the past 23 years, all from nontuition revenue provided by generous stakeholders.

“We had consultants tell us before the Student Life Center project that a major campaign was just not feasible,” recalls President John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73. “However, many of our board members and key supporters stepped up with significant gifts and we soon realized that we had the potential to get it done. Quite simply, we asked, and hundreds of generous alumni, parents and foundations answered the call.” Cornerstone gifts from the Daughters of Charity Foundation, The William G. Irwin Foundation, the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation, Tom Coates ’72 and Frank ’52 & Lois Noonan provided the early momentum necessary to complete the Student Life Center.

What’s next? 2013 will see the beginning of the transformation of our science facilities into modern, versatile spaces capable of handling a variety of lecture, lab and exploration environments. “Education is changing rapidly, and we have to provide updated facilities and programs to meet the needs of tomorrow’s students,” says Scudder. “But this project isn’t too bad,” he adds with a smile. “It’s going to be less than five million.”

A Time of Celebration

Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Silver Jubilee

President John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73 is proud of Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory; and he should be.

This school year marks the 25th anniversary of the successful merger between two established, single-sex, San Francisco Catholic high schools: Sacred Heart (Christian Brothers), and St. Vincent (Daughters of Charity). The merger bucked the trend of all-girl and all-boy Catholic education in the City and united the two to create San Francisco’s oldest co-ed Catholic school. Scudder has viewed SHC from many perspectives over the last halfcentury: as student, alumnus, faculty member, the first dean of students of the newly merged co-ed school and ultimately is president of today’s SHC. He readily credits the merger success to the Brothers and Daughters: “They have always been innovators,” he says. “They are not risk averse.”

That’s a good thing, because their path to this point has been filled with change. The merger that connected the two Catholic schools into one co-ed organization is just another turn in the Brothers’ and Daughters’ journey to fulfill their common mission.

In fact, the real tale of the journey begins not in 1987, but back in 1852, when the Daughters of Charity first answered the call to serve the underprivileged youth of a young San Francisco. After a long, harrowing journey from Maryland that lost two of the seven sisters to exhaustion and cholera, the Daughters arrived in San Francisco and established an orphanage and girls’ day school, later known as St. Vincent’s.

With the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, San Francisco’s population continued to rise sharply, and the need for youth services and educational outlets rose with it. In 1868, the Christian Brothers arrived in San Francisco and in 1874 opened Sacred Heart—in an effort to serve the growing elementary school population. Even then, the missions of the Brothers and Daughters were similar. Both met the needs of the community and served through education.

In 1906, when the magnitude-8.25 earthquake decimated the city of San Francisco, and the Great Fire followed to wipe out what was left, the Daughters and Brothers found their missions’ progress ground to a halt as well. Citywide,

the devastation was severe: Three thousand lives were lost; 225,000 men, women and children were left homeless; and 28,000 buildings are destroyed, including St. Vincent’s school for girls.

However, true to their vision and resilience, this wasn’t an end for the Daughters’ school; in many ways, it was a new beginning. St. Vincent’s school was rebuilt and moved three more times before landing at the corner of Gough and Geary in 1938. In 1966, change came again when it was decided to raze the St. Vincent’s facility on Gough to build St. Mary’s Cathedral. The school was rebuilt adjacent to St. Mary’s Cathedral and renamed Cathedral High School. In 1967, Cathedral High School and the Sacred Heart High School across the street began to share courses with an understanding of the similarity of their mission and their shared vision to better serve their youth.

So it’s within this context of continual change but consistency to mission that we can view the time period surrounding the merger. The 1980s brought about a challenging time for San Francisco parochial schools. A sharp decline in enrollment citywide had already forced the closure of the well-established high school, Star of the Sea. Sacred Heart Principal Brother Philip Clark wrote a letter to the Sacred Heart community published in the 1986 Second Century alumni magazine addressing this issue, “[T]he outside forces which dictate change are (among others) demographic realities, cost of living realities, pressure for educational change in the public sector, [and] churchgoers’ attitudes.” Brother Philip continued with his impassioned plea to an ambivalent audience, “My point has repeatedly been that WE must manage change or changes will be forced upon us not to our liking. […] Change is, therefore, inevitable.” Shortly after that plea, Brother Philip and Sister Audrey began taking the steps to merge the two schools.

Ironically, what made change difficult for the community to accept was the very thing that made the school the success that it was. The community was emotionally tied to the school in immeasurable and unspoken ways. St. Vincent alumna Rosemarie Lawlor Horan ’65 reflects on a change that occurred when St. Vincent’s was razed to the name change of Cathedral for her alma mater. “It was difficult for some,” she admits. Students and alums witnessed change to something they loved and the change was unsettling. Horan explains how deeply impressed the students were by their experience at St. Vincent’s and by

the kindness and vision of the Daughters who taught there. “They left their footprint on our memories,” she says. “I close my eyes and can still hear the lessons they taught us.” These types of connections are not easily made or discarded. “I can honestly say that those high school years were the best,” she recalls.

President Scudder admits that while the merger was most difficult for the students and alumni in the midst of the transition, there was no wavering on the part of the administration. The Daughters and the Brothers again, led the charge: “We were all so focused on looking forward.”

In the fall of 1987, the merger was launched.

Philosophically, Scudder explains, the administration was prepared for the merger to stay true to the mission while taking the combined school in a new direction: “Here are these two great traditions of Lasallian education and Vincentian charism—we took two families with long legacies and put them together knowing that the offshoot would be something unique.”

However, soon the administrative and technical challenges became evident. “The limitations were logistical as opposed to philosophical,” explains Scudder.

With the merging of the two physical spaces, everything was duplicated. “Now there were two cafeterias, two libraries, and the question became: How do we merge the physical space that served two small populations, but now must serve one large one?” Scudder reflects. In addition to questions about the property, there was the issue of duplicated faculty, administrative and staff positions.

Even with all these resource-based decisions, Scudder noted “No one lost a job.”

Once the logistical challenges were navigated, the larger student base opened up curriculum opportunities and course offerings that weren’t previously possible. As the school grew in size, so did the variety and depth of programming. This growth was essential for the school as it rose to meet its next challenge in the mid-1990s.

During this time, more students were attending college, and colleges were becoming more demanding. Students graduating college entered a changing workplace that preferred college graduates from renowned schools.

“Motivated students and parents looked to Sacred Heart Cathedral to offer more rigorous and competitive course offerings as part of its preparatory education,” explains Carol Collins ’86. Again the school met the needs of the

day with a cutting-edge curriculum, advanced placement courses offerings and extracurricular opportunities for their student body.

Even with all the changes and the focus on more rigorous academics, there was still a focus on service learning. More opportunities arose throughout the city in terms of community service. “It was clear that even after the merger, the mission continued to be to create a wellrounded, spiritual student,” remembers Collins. “When you’d walk under the etching from the Christian Brothers on the La Salle campus —‘Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve’ —you were proud to be a part of it,” she says.

Today, SHC continues its tradition of growing with the times and with the city. San Francisco is known globally to be on the cutting edge of technological advances.

SHC reflects this energy through a commitment to technology in the classroom. Over the last few years, SHC has upgraded Wi-Fi throughout the building, added a new student platform to host class discussions, chats and lectures, and established a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program to ensure that all students have the same access to technology in the classroom.

So with all this looking forward, why look back on 1987? Twenty-five years ago, Sacred Heart Cathedral did something groundbreaking: “We created the best co-ed Catholic school in San Francisco and others followed,” explains President Scudder. While this is notable, the 25th anniversary deserves commemoration even more so because it highlights yet another trial of adversity that the school overcame. “[The merger] forced all of us not to think about what was, but what could be,” Scudder says.

This visionary spirit that encourages forward thinking and embraces change is what makes SHC the stellar institution it is today, and guarantees that it will continue to be an institution its students and alumni can be proud of tomorrow.

25 Years of Change

Not so long ago, when a teacher asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?,” the answer—whether it was a doctor or lawyer or a dancer or an astronaut—wasn’t really the important thing. For the most part, jobs were out there and attainable. The question was intended to inspire students to dream big and suggested that students needed only to work hard for opportunities to present themselves.

With the unprecedented competitiveness of today’s job market, the question is no longer a rhetorical one for eighth graders. Once, a career path began when a young person decided whether or not to go to college. Later that path presented itself in the choice of which college to attend or which major to pursue. Today the path to a meaningful career begins much younger, and which high school a student chooses plays a much more significant role in determining where that path will lead. The path may seem a little rockier today, and the promise of the job waiting at the end of it isn’t as sure. Advances in technology and changes in our competitive economy create detours and shortcuts that have to be negotiated before answering the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”

“One can’t predict all the careers that will be offered four years from now,” says Director of Admissions Tim Burke ’70, “but one can provide the curriculum and the skills that lead to an excellent educational experience and a balanced life.” Burke has served Sacred Heart Cathedral for more than 34 years, first as a social studies and English instructor, a baseball and basketball coach and, for the last 23 years, as the admissions director. Throughout the years, Burke has seen the many changes and demands put on 8th graders.

“Twenty-five years ago, education was simpler. But the complexity of today’s society has placed a growing demand on a school’s curriculum to respond to the changing needs of our students.” This has forced the average 8th grader to adjust how he or she learns and how they process information. Burke adds, “At a much younger age than in previous generations, students are forced to recognize that their academic choices affect where they will end up.

it used to be.”

SHC’s administrators and faculty work tirelessly to keep up with the pace and ever-changing demands of the world today. Without abandoning many of the tried-and-true educational concepts that form the core of the school’s tradition of academic excellence, we realize that in order to keep up with the world, we must embrace change. SHC has developed the curriculum to provide the essential tools for post secondary school success.

School is no longer solely about delivery content. The 21st century school also needs to teach students to think critically, to communicate effectively, and to develop a sense of personal resiliency. We have always developed new curricula and programs that respond to the needs of our students. This next year is no exception as SHC introduces a number of new programs—Inquiry & Innovation, BYOD, Physics First and online courses that support the influence of science and technology in today’s world.

Along with the rigor and demands of our challenging curriculum, SHC emphasizes a balanced approach to life for our students. The school’s cocurricular programs, including Lasallian Vincentian Youth service opportunities, athletics, visual and performing arts, student council, retreats and clubs, provide students the opportunity to nourish their talents, to engage other students, and to develop selfconfidence.

Educators and principals who have served San Francisco students for several decades agree that advances in technology, the demands of the economy and its effects on family dynamics over the last 25 years have significantly changed students and the way that they learn.

Principal of Holy Name of Jesus School and educator for over 38 years, Judy Cosmos (wife of veteran SHC Math Instructor George Cosmos ’60) says, “Today, our economy

requires that both parents work, which leaves little time for either mom or dad to sit with their child and help him/her with homework....

Students are more independent now than they were 25 years ago.”

St. Anne School Principal Tom White, adds, “Children need even more support and guidance from their parents than ever before. The [internet] and the massive media blitz that students are exposed to today leave students with little time to ponder issues. Rather than assume that students possess an innate desire to work toward a future goal, parents and teachers must work in a collaborative spirit building and supporting each student’s strengths and vision for the future. Together, they must help to build a strong spiritual, academic and emotional foundation for these children.” White has worked at developing such foundations as principal of St. Anne for more than 22 years.

Educational technology has evolved rapidly over the past 25 years, and SHC’s teachers continue to integrate technology as a meaningful learning tool. Advances in technology create opportunities to present material in multiple ways, but also present challenges for teachers.

Effective Ed Tech is not about using a computer or the web but all about how the digital resources are used.

One might expect that in an age where information is so readily accessible, education might get simpler, but we have seen that that is not necessarily the case. As it has for the past 25 years, Sacred Heart Cathedral continues to innovate using new strategies and developing new programs that build upon the existing college prep curriculum. Studies show that half the jobs our present seniors will have in ten years do not yet exist today. Half of our students will grow up and establish careers in law, medicine, the arts, computer science and engineers. We wish we had a crystal ball to predict the new careers and opportunities that await the other half of the class. At SHC, we know that we will send our students out with the skills and the resourcefulness to succeed in whatever the next 25 years has in store for them.

The Unmaking and the Making of Things A Memory of SHC’s Birth (and Why It Matters)

On realizing you’re approaching the 25th anniversary of your high school graduation, there is a pretty standard menu of different reactions to choose from: 1. Curl up in fetal position, immediately begin whimpering; 2. Rage at any and all gods for the loss of youth; 3. Wallow in a warm bath of fuzzy nostalgia that may or may not reflect reality, etc., etc., et al…

My own reaction has been to take a little longer when looking in the mirror, examining the patchwork of blemishes, crow’s-feet, grey hairs, and other physiological manifestations of age (ear hair? REALLY?) that have accrued across my reflection since 1988. Not surprisingly, comparisons with my yearbook photos of yesteryear haven’t provided any sort of relief either. These various signs of adulthood speak to things common in all people: the loss

of family and friends, the gains of love, dreams dashed or realized, the passage of time and how we are changed by it.

What, if anything, though, do these rather somber thoughts have to do with the Sacred Heart Cathedral of today, the school my graduating class left 25 years ago as the first coed graduating class in either of the merged schools’ long histories? In 1988, what were the school, students, faculty, campus, identity and spirit like, and did anything live on? Did my class leave any lasting legacy for the school, or were we merely a blip on the continuum of the school’s timeline?

The school year of 1987-1988 dawned in a bright, queasy glare of chaos and controversy. Besides the obvious tensions brought upon by the merger, the school community strained at a number of different fault lines. There were racial and gender flare-ups. Fights between students and coaches. Mass detentions. An invalidated student body officer’s election. A seemingly endless carousel of suspensions, expulsions, and transfers. To attribute all of this solely to the merger is a reach; the era and the individuals involved contributed to brew this volatile concoction. Still, the looming specter of the merger itself didn’t help, as it seemed to condense a merged student body’sworth of teen angst into a focused, white-hot fire of self-righteous outrage. The axes of both schools, now joined in a marriage of necessity, had been jolted irrevocably out of alignment.

Still, the everyday campus and student life of that era would be

faintly recognizable to today’s observer, though profoundly different. The current Student Life Center is to me still the “mushball” field, our lone patch of green on campus, frequently an untraversed, muddy bog depending on the time of year. The foyer to the current building was the nexus of campus social life in ’88: the outdoor basketball court, where young men from the Mission, Marina, Sunset and Western Addition would strip off their collared shirts at lunch to play heated full-court hoops in the dissolving fog; the elevated strip of adjacent concrete where one could take a dip of Copenhagen or smoke a Marlboro at lunch while reading the Sporting Green; the entrance to the cafeteria where a variety of cheap heated pizzas, turkey-and-Americancheese sandwiches, and fresh chocolate chip cookies were washed down with soda or taken outside to scarf while watching the game and its resulting woofing, strutting, pushing, and jive-talking. Rather than in the airy reaches on top of the school, the library was located in the basement—a sterile warehouse of books, drab and dank. On the plaza, Hacky Sack circles swirled, students crammed, cliques preened and gossiped, and the occasional neighborhood derelict would get chased out of the open alley by the watchful guardianship of Brother Joseph, Brother Antonio or Charlie Borngesser.

The De Paul campus, foreign ground at first for the boys, quickly took on many of the same characteristics as the La Salle, but with some notable differences. Those eating lunch outside in the open

square quickly learned vigilance in guarding their sandwiches from the preying pigeons, many a lunch was taken skyward toward the Cathedral by one of these “sky rats.” Students milled about, laughing and watching this constant battle, talking, flirting, dipping, maybe doing some homework forgotten from the night before.

As for extracurriculars and curriculars, the comparison between the school now and 25 years ago only accentuates the changed character of the school today as a whole. The number of varsity sports offered today is roughly double the amount in 1988, appealing to a broader crosssection of the city’s families and athletes. Although a “college prep” school in 1988, at the time this was more aspirational than descriptive; while today’s school offers close to 36 AP classes in a variety of subjects, there were around five or six total in 1988. There were just two sections of chemistry, one each of calculus and physics, these reserved exclusively for only the most gifted juniors and seniors. While today’s curriculum incorporates technology and innovative, cross-disciplinary methodologies into the students’ everyday experience, we were required to take typing, banging away on archaic electric machines that frequently fizzled, jammed, gurgled and died. Today over 92 percent of graduating classes now typically go on to four-year schools; we sent 85-90 percent to two- and four-year schools combined.

All of this isn’t to disparage our intelligence, the efforts of the faculty and administration, or the work of the Brothers and Daughters.

Many of the best teachers I ever had were at SHC, men and women of intelligence, integrity and passion, mentors that deeply cared about the development of these teenagers in their care. Rather, these facts are just indicative of the different times and the changed expectations of parents and students and what is expected from a private Catholic high school in San Francisco today.

My class produced doctors, writers, firefighters, businesspeople, lawyers, musicians, cops, artists, bankers, sportscasters and soldiers. We became mothers and fathers, the circle of life come full. We were formed by the school and the lessons we learned there. We were sent into the world prepared for lives of meaning, of sacrifice, of love and of excellence.

So, what exactly is to be made of this comparison between eras? How do we connect the dots, reconcile this tumultuous snapshot in time with SHC going forward, and come to some kind of conclusion?

There is a theory in anthropology called “punctuated equilibrium.”

Roughly, it states that a species will remain in stasis, unchanged, until stressed by external, environmental changes. Only then will a “jump” occur, where those most readily able to adapt to these new stresses will become dominant. This theory always made sense to me, especially extrapolated down to the “micro-species,” the individual: Through the fires of life’s challenges the character of the individual is forged. I don’t think it’s a stretch to conversely extend this idea upward, to organizations, or schools, as well: adversity breaks things down and

reforms them, their very elements, into something new, something wiser and stronger. Different.

Here I will return to 1988 and shamelessly promote my class as, if not as the greatest, most athletic, talented or gifted class in the schools’ histories, perhaps one of the most influential. I say this because amidst all of the rancor of that time, despite every opportunity to give in to the pervasive negativity, we thrived. We beat SI in football for the first time outright in 17 years. We won the Bruce-Mahoney trophy. Without administration or faculty approval or knowledge, our class opened the campus to neighborhood poor and gave them our old school clothes, emptying our class treasury to buy and distribute food, an event that I believe directly led to today’s emphasis on community and Christian service as part of SHC’s spiritual curriculum. We helped start the Performing Arts program, the fruition of which is the Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater, a school and community hub for the arts for years to come. The nascent Oracle literary journal was nurtured under our watch, giving voice to the dreams and thoughts of contributors until then unknown. We had our own punk band, for goodness’ sake!

Despite the constantly roiling waters, there grew a frenzied, almost manic, spirit between the boys and girls in our class, a will to make things as good as they could possibly be despite the circumstances and, if things still sucked, well…at least make it tolerable until other classes down the line could make it right.

In retrospect, I think it worked on all counts, part gallows humor,

part resignation, a lot of craziness, passion, and, well, heart.

Sacred Heart Cathedral has become something almost unrecognizable to most premerger alumni—an academically rigorous, technologically innovative, athletically elite, and artistically dynamic co-ed school in the same geographic footprint as the schools they once attended. Though the Christian Brothers and Daughters of Charity both continue to provide the same philosophical DNA that defines and guides the school, I think they, too, would admit to being somewhat “along for the ride” with SHC, a wondrous, once-in-a-lifetime educational and social experiment that actually worked. While I won’t say that I ever saw this coming, that I saw clearly what SHC would become 25 years ago, I can say my class was there at the beginning of this new school’s life, the squalling infancy, the frenzied adolescence, this evolutionary “jump,” and we did our part to make it work.

Now, back to curling up in that fetal position…

As a student, Rachelle embraced opportunities to be a leader in the classroom, on student council and on her volleyball, basketball and track and field teams. Her experiences with peers, teachers and coaches helped develop her leadership skills. SHC’s academics and nurturing environment prepared her for the challenges she would have to face in college and life.

Rachelle continues to support SHC so she can help change people’s lives for the better. From her experience she is confident that SHC is providing young people with an education deep in faith and accommodating to students’ interests.

As a parent, she has made a commitment to support young people and education. “I give to SHC every year so the school can provide the best education and experience for our future leaders,” she says. In addition to SHC, Rachelle supports the other schools she attended.

When asked what advice she would give others who are considering making a gift, Rachelle says, “Giving creates lasting change. Make an impact in the community and donate!”

Bill and Nancy Murphy, parents of Will Murphy ’00, have supported SHC by making a gift to the Fund for Excellence every year since Will was a freshman in the 1996-97 school year. They’re appreciative of the education Will received while he was a student, and believe Will thrived at SHC in a way he wouldn’t have at other schools. A number of teachers had a big impact on Will’s life, including Instructor of Social Studies Rich Sansoe ’71 and Instructor of Religious Studies Kathy Lorentz.

Bill and Nancy are also appreciative of the experience Will had with the athletic program: Will met great friends while playing football and soccer all four years. After SHC he attended Loyola Marymont, where he played lacrosse.

How Will 2013 Taxes Affect You? The new tax landscape looks very different than it did in 2012. How will the tax law changes affect your situation? Below are some highlights.

• IRA charitable rollover: Donors aged 70½ or older are once again eligible to move up to $100,000 from their IRAs directly to qualified charities without having to pay income taxes on the money.

• Estate, gift and generation-skipping taxes: The 2013 tax law permanently preserves the current individual gift, estate and generation-skipping tax to a unified $5 million exemption.

• Dividend income: Qualified dividend income will be taxed at a maximum rate of 20 percent.

• Long-term capital gains: The capital gains tax rate—the tax you pay on the amount an asset has increased in value over time—will depend on a taxpayer’s ordinary income tax rate.

What’s in a name?

There is a conversation I seem to have monthly, if not weekly, here in San Francisco: Stranger: “So you work at Sacred Heart? My uncle graduated from there! And my nieces all went there, too. It’s a great school.”

Me: “Well... I’m guessing your uncle went to Sacred Heart High School and that your nieces all graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory.”

Stranger: “Yeah, Sacred Heart.

Same thing.”

The school has had different names through the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries: St. Vincent’s School for Girls, Cathedral High School and Sacred Heart High School. A certain amount of confusion about the school’s moniker is understandable, but it has been 25 years since we embraced our current name. In that time SHC has grown into the innovative, modern college preparatory dreamed of by the administrations of both Sacred Heart and Cathedral high schools. If we are not the Sacred Heart of 1986, why should we let people’s old memories define what SHC is today?

As a community we are examining how the school represents itself publicly, how people refer to us, what our school colors and imagery express, and how we are perceived by the city we helped build. “We are doing this to promote our outstanding educational mission 1

spring 2013

and how it is being lived out every day by talented, committed professionals,” says Principal Gary J. Cannon. “We are doing this because we are committed to growing and improving our school in every aspect, including in our representation and outreach to prospective families and benefactors.”

This identity process is evolutionary, not revolutionary. “We recognize that change is hard, that the symbols and slogans we have used come to help define who we are,” says President John F. Scudder, Jr. ’73. In acknowledgment of this fact, SHC will be keeping its name, its seal, its motto of “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve,” and of course it will remain the home of the Fightin’ Irish. But other opportunities to refine and strengthen SHC’s identity are always presenting themselves.

What symbol should go on the football helmets? What about our “school spirit” T-shirts? How can we be distinctive with our traditional green, white and blue colors? How can we sum ourselves up in a single, effective tagline? The answers to questions like these will help us unify and strengthen SHC’s brand identity.

“It is difficult to let go of cherished items, and natural to worry about the success of new ideas and visions,” Scudder says. “It is for these reasons that we are partnering with professional firms who have sterling records and who will engage the community in talking about and deciding on the future visual representation.” SHC has employed the Osaki Creative Group to facilitate the engagement of students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, benefactors,

Brothers and Daughters. You may have already noticed changes in the website and materials the school produces. The new monogram and tagline are in development now, a project we kicked off with a series of community interviews in the fall.

These are all small steps forward in the larger process of enhancing and strengthening the SHC identity.

Leading the charge on this endeavor is the Branding Decision Committee (listed below), a working group composed of stakeholders from every segment of SHC’s community. All of them are committed to ensuring the updated SHC identity is in accordance with what is best for the school from everyone’s perspective.

“Fundamentally,” says Scudder, “we are doing this because we believe it is the right thing to do, and is essential for our future.”

Manuel “Manny” Rosales lives in Silver Spring, Maryland. He’s been an active member of the board of directors for the Latino Coalition and director of the legislative office since 2008. He is very involved in his community and does a lot of volunteer work. He is also a board member for the 60+ Foundation in Maryland.

1950 Walter Derby and his wife Rudi celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 1. In honor of their milestone anniversary, they took a cruise to Alaska with their family. Walter is retired from the San Francisco Police Department and Rudi is a retired nurse. They reside in Lafayette, California, and have three grown children and three grandchildren.

Philip Sturiale has been retired since 2008. He worked for the Safeway corporation for 39 years, both on the union and corporate sides. He resides in Concord, California. He has traveled around the world since his retirement, visiting countries such as Italy, England and Belgium.

Bob Figone lives in San Francisco.

He enjoys going to the Olympic Club twice a week for his senior exercise class, where he also gets to mingle with other Sacred Heart alumni who are members.

1962 John Beckerley lives in San Geronimo, California. He and his wife visited the Holy Land, Egypt, Greece and Italy in September. Also on the trip was a friend who at the age of 87 wanted to visit his Italian family roots.

Ken Garcia is employed by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and works out of the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. He is the director of community and government affairs.

Anne Marie Kurpinsky has been teaching at City College of San Francisco for nearly 15 years. She is also very active in her son and daughter’s schools, helping with their auctions and events.

Dan Pino’s son, C.J. (Connor James), was fortunate to be one of 15 kids recently selected to participate on a 12U baseball team headed to Cooperstown, New York. The weeklong tournament will be held during Hall of Fame Induction Week (July 19-28, 2013). The kids will have an opportunity to meet players from all over the world, when they gather at the Cooperstown Field of Dreams baseball complex. Pino also recently refereed the 37th annual Alumni Basketball Game at SHC on November 21.

On November 19, Ed Cota, former head and assistant football coach, was honored before the 49ers-Bears game by PG&E and the American Red Cross for his efforts in developing emergency response plans in both the public and private sector. Cota is pictured here (fourth from left) along with Jerry Rice and other honorees. On December 25, Cota retired as a lieutenant from the SFPD after 31 years of service. Prior to entering the SFPD in 1981, he served seven years with the Daly City Police Department for a combined total of 38 years in law enforcement. During his career at SFPD, Cota received two Silver Medals of Valor; a Purple Heart Award for gunshot wounds sustained in the line of duty; two meritorious conduct awards; two police commission commendations; and more than 75 captain's complimentary reports.

She’s been working in IT for the past 27 years for the city and county of San Francisco.

1990 Rhoda Santos Matheson lives in Vallejo and has worked as a registrar for the ITT Technical Institute in Oakland for the past three years. In her spare time, she’s also a Zumba Turbokick (cardio kickboxing) instructor.

Patrick Dunne, faculty member and alum, and his wife Mona Rabieh Dunne, also a faculty member, recently welcomed their son, Mickey Dunne, seen in this picture next to Dillon Jordan (whose parents are Jim and Sarah Jordan ’98) and Oliver Nuttall (son of Matt Nuttall, SHC faculty member). Alston Lew graduated last May from Golden Gate University School of Law with a certificate emphasis in Intellectual Property. He took the 2012 California Bar Exam in July. In November, he received a notification from the State Bar that he passed the California Bar Exam. He was sworn in as an attorney and officer of the state and federal courts on December 7.

2001 On December 14, Jennifer Romanini graduated from the San Francisco Fire Department Class #114 along with two classmates from ’04.

2002 Eve Mendez recently married and is living down the Peninsula. She works for the Game Operations Department for the San Francisco 49ers. She enjoyed the Super Bowl in New Orleans with the team back in February.

2003 reunion Molly Paul is serving her duty on the S.S. Legend.

Sarah Richen Jordan and Jim Jordan welcomed their second child, Dillon, born December 11, 2012, at 5:27 am.

Dillon was 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 20 inches long.

In November, Kevin Greene volunteered his time at the Los Angeles Mission as a student-athlete representative from USC.

2010 Yale Kim is a junior in New York University’s Sports Management Program.

Andrew Yee ’04, Nick Sabella ’04 and Jennifer Romanini ’01 graduated from the San Francisco Fire Department Class #114 on December 14.

Lucas Bartholomew-Good took a year off in between high school and college to travel the world. He traveled to Europe, mainly Italy, three months in South Africa and Malawi, and also three months in New Zealand with his sister, Tessa Bartholomew-Good ’08.

2005 John Matthew Paul is a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

On February 2, Zackary Rance (seen left with Director of Alumni Relations Franco Finn ‘95), celebrated the grand opening of his newest business location of Transamerica Financial Advisors in Burlingame.

2000 Marco Rosas graduated in 2004 with a Business Administration degree from the University of San Francisco. Currently, he’s in the Master’s program at USF and looks forward to a career in technology.

He works in USF’s registrar’s office.

Chrissy Pringle graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Institutions, Integrated Marketing Communications, and Political Science/International Studies last June. She is living in Chicago and working for Accenture as a Business Analyst.

Linsey is attending Boston University, where he also has his own radio show on campus.
