A Message from Dr. Skrade We pause in gratitude for the many blessings bestowed upon our Sacred Heart Cathedral community, especially during this time of collective concern presented by the global pandemic. When we started off 2020, celebrating with almost 1,000 participants at our Crab Dinner, we did not fathom what was ahead or anticipate the significance of our 2020 goals. Our two key strategic initiatives focused on safety and security and a need for increased educational space.

Early in the spring, we reconfigured the goals to meet the challenges presented by fluid and ever-changing realities of the pandemic crisis. Our commitment to the SHC community to achieve these ends strengthened our plan to be fully prepared for our future. Throughout the institution, processes in all areas were not only adapted for 2020 but also implemented to meet the needs for future crisis preparedness.

By fall, we celebrated the completion of the De Paul Lobby renovation, a project made possible by our students and families, key donors and proud alums; we hosted thousands of individuals to a comprehensive Virtual Open House event where prospective families were able to engage one-on-one with faculty, administrators and students in more than 60 Zoom rooms and tour the school through an interactive campus map; and in October, SHC earned high commendations through WASC accreditation. By November, we received notification from the San Francisco Department of Public Health that our application to return to in-person instruction was approved. Approval from SFDPH affirms the hard work of our faculty and staff to ensure the health and safety of our students, and we are thrilled to be able to welcome them back in January 2021.

It is with these many blessings in mind that we present to you the winter issue of SHC Magazine. Within these pages you will read about the establishment of SHC’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Working Group, a group whose initiatives aim to ensure that every single student and family finds a true home in our school community — a safe place where they are empowered to be their authentic selves. You’ll learn about the innovations of our Admissions Office as they continue to connect with prospective students and families in a way that is both meaningful and true to the SHC student experience.

You’ll meet the newest members of our community, the Class of 2024, a group of students who began their high school careers amidst a global pandemic, and have managed to immerse themselves into the SHC community at a distance.

What looks like our achievements should, instead, be understood as opportunities to praise God. We are grateful for every blessing, every God-given opportunity.

This issue is dedicated to the memory of Justin Charles Love ’96 and his beloved family and friends. You have turned my mourning into dancing, you have stripped off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. So my heart will sing to you unceasingly, my God, I shall praise you forever.

class of 2024 CHAMY CHOI I chose SHC because I have so many connections here.

My baseball teammates and close friends recommended SHC because of its diversity, culture and great, experienced educators, student-ambassadors, friends and coaches. Since the sixth grade I participated in the Summer Institute and bonded well with my fellow campers. Now some of them go to SHC, too.

With the help of my friends and family, my transition to high school was a joyous and an unforgettable one. Before the pandemic, I made a plan like any high schooler would do. Then suddenly, normal expectations were no longer in effect. Now, looking back with all the unexpected protocols, I would say the teachers at SHC handled it all very smoothly.

Whether the learning is at home or at school, being an SHC student means each day is a learning opportunity. The block schedule was definitely something I did not prepare for.

Every day felt so fast-paced, and it took some time to get used to it.

I joined the Lasallian Vincentian Youth Club, the Broadcast Club, and I am working with Emerald and SHC Live on a podcast project that will hopefully be approved. If it is, we’ll launch the first-ever SHC podcast platform.

My favorite class so far is French. I’ve always considered French as one of the hardest languages to understand, but Monsieur Baptiste Genestin convinced me otherwise. We’re still covering the basics, but I enjoy it.

The SHC community is very inclusive.

I am excited to get back on campus next year to reunite with some old friends, and play with my baseball teammates on the field. I am really looking forward to the freshman baseball season next spring, to creating the four-year bond and hopefully winning the WCAL. I think a lot of freshmen will relate to this: getting to know the teachers was a challenge at the start of the year. In middle school, we always had the same teacher for each grade. Now, in a larger community, we have different teachers who have different teaching methods.

In addition to Zoom breakout rooms, social media has helped me a lot in connecting with my classmates. Before school began, I started a podcast channel with my friend who also goes to SHC. With over 20 episodes we connected with a lot of current students at SHC about their experiences with COVID-19 and their personal interests. Hosting a podcast has been a great way to reach out and get to know my classmates.

SHC in a word: Committed.

COOPER GUMINA Many of my family members have attended SHC, so I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a part of the Fightin’ Irish family. I have great memories as a little kid of going to watch games at SHC and getting a chance to meet student-athletes such as Jerry Brown ’09, Kevin Greene ’09, and Josh Fox ’12.

The transition from junior high to high school has been filled with new adventures.

My teachers have been really supportive, especially during online learning. Getting to know all of the new technology was hard at first, but now that I have the hang of it, it has really enhanced my learning.

I really hope to play basketball and football at SHC. These sports will give me an opportunity to meet new friends, and I hope to be able to compete in the Bruce-Mahoney rivalry games.

My favorite class so far has been ASL because Ms. P is full of energy, and we get to do fun projects.

I am most excited to meet new people, play on the football and basketball teams, and learn new things. I know whatever SHC has in store for me will be amazing.

My greatest struggle so far with distance learning has been staying organized, especially with all of the different technologies we have been using. I’ve found that the more organized I am, the easier things become.

Thankfully, my teachers have been there to support me every step of the way.

Although I did not get social media until I started high school, it has been a great way to connect with friends and meet new people.

One unexpected positive aspect of shelter in place is that it has motivated me to find new ways to exercise and stay in shape.

BRIDGET PANINA I chose SHC because the community is so amazing! When I shadowed here, I immediately felt at home. Students waved to me and said "hi" in the halls. All the teachers were so kind and helpful. My older brother is a student at SHC and people who knew him called me "Little Panina." It was such an amazing experience.

SHC teachers, students, and administrators are so understanding and helpful. Every single person I have talked to or emailed at SHC has been so welcoming and kind. My teachers understand that it has been a hard year. They understand that distance learning is difficult, and they are willing to make accommodations. SHC has really welcomed me and made my transition smooth and fun!

I love the strong sense of community at SHC. Everybody is so warm and welcoming, and I feel as if I really belong.

I am involved with SHC's Mock Trial Club, The Emerald, and the Cross Country team. I hope to get involved with the SHC Softball team, as well. I love all my classes at SHC, but English is definitely my favorite. Ms. Pacatte is my teacher and she is the best English teacher I have ever had. She has taught me so much in only one semester. She expects a lot from her students, which is good and she challenges me to work as hard as I can.

SHC in a word: Welcoming

Overall, the transition from eighth grade to high school has been very smooth. All of my teachers have been flexible and understanding. Transitioning from a class of 31 students to a class of over 300 was daunting, even when classes are online. In the beginning it was strange to meet my new classmates through a screen, but as the months have progressed I have gotten to know everybody a little better. All of my teachers are very supportive and have made the transition easier.

Several athletic teams were also able to resume in-person conditioning and practices, modified for the health and safety of all participants.

irish factoids SHC faculty members Ish Ruiz, Leiana Payawal, and LyRyan Russell ’97 have come together to create the newly formed SHC Adult Faith & Spirituality Group providing a vital resource to SHC faculty and staff. The group has created prayer resources for teachers, informative videos exploring SHC’s Lasallian and Vincentian charisms, and they regularly host virtual gatherings for fellow faculty and staff members.

SHC’s newly formed Advocacy in Action Catholic Community Cohort (CCC) provided a platform for students who are ineligible to vote to get involved in the election this year. Cohort members made phone calls to individuals in various states to encourage them to register and request ballots, they pre-registered eligible SHC students to vote, wrote letters and postcards to voters across the country, and helped students become volunteers at polling places throughout the city.

MADDAN’S CORNER

De Paul Lobby Renovation Completed SHC celebrated the completion of the De Paul Lobby Renovation Project in October with a small opening ceremony. The newly transformed lobby includes 4,000 square feet of temperature controlled, beautifully lit, flexible space designed to invite collaboration. New, durable, sound absorbing floors, comfortable modular furniture, hospital grade air filtration, and a well-appointed welcome desk make for a lovely venue that reflects the creative learning environment defining the De Paul Campus for the Arts.

Beloved SHC Staff Member Roselle Nerney Retires Roselle Nerney’s husband and three children are all SHC alumni — Mike Nerney ’75, Kevin ’00, Christine ’02, and Brian ’04 — yet, Roselle has spent more time within the halls of SHC than all of them combined. In 1996, Roselle began working afternoons in the SHC library at the referral of her good friend and former SHC librarian, Judy Scudder. Soon, an opening for an attendance office position became available. Roselle took the reins and never looked back. Over the course of nearly 25 years, Roselle faithfully served the SHC community, nurturing each and every student with whom she interacted. In a parting message to the SHC community ahead of her retirement, Roselle reflected, “I became mama bear to 1,300 students each year. Some needed a little guidance, some needed a shoulder to cry on, some needed tough love, and I loved them all. How lucky I was to be a part of this community.”

Unprecedented is the buzzword of 2020. It has been used to describe everything from the pandemic to natural disasters to the new normal.

It became a magnificent descriptor on November 7, when Vice President-elect Kamala Harris made history. One hundred years after women won the right to vote, Harris, who is of Jamaican and Indian ancestry, wore suffragette white as she addressed the nation. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last,” she exclaimed. “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities. And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourself in a way that others might not see you, simply because they’ve never seen it before.”

Generations of American women have had to imagine a time when they would be represented in the highest positions of power. That day finally arrived with the Oakland native shattering the glass ceiling after securing a historic victory with running mate, President-elect Joe Biden. This is a pivotal moment for all woman, especially young women. They no longer have to imagine their potential. They can see it.

decade ago, an idea was born out of heartache. The death of former Sacred Heart Cathedral English teacher and coach Steve Wilson spurred alums of the Class of 1988, including Steve’s son Noah, to start talking about honoring his memory at the school where he spent so many influential years. What began as a tribute solely to Steve, however, grew in scope quickly as we heard about other influential faculty from that era from Cathedral, Sacred Heart, and the merged SHC, who had passed. To honor all of their memories and to celebrate our current faculty, the Class of 1988 Faculty Enrichment Endowment at SHC was created to facilitate continued faculty professional development.

Every year, SHC faculty put in endless hours in training and class time in order to better serve our students. Of the 103 current members, our faculty holds 71 masters and 10 doctoral degrees.

This dedication to their craft is displayed every day, whether in person or virtually, as they help form the minds and spirits of their students.

Similarly, past teachers such as Steve, Cathy Williams, Juan Sanchez, Caroline Kuhn, George Bertola, William Finley, and others shown here, mentored generations of San Francisco youth, spanning entire decades. This guidance took the form of teaching and counseling, of course, but also of coaching and other transformative experiences outside of the formal classroom, modeling in both word and action the Lasallian Vincentian ethos of a “big brother, big sister” relationship.

SHC community members share their fond memories of those departed faculty from that era.

One time Ms. Kuhn asked me to get something outside of school time (which I just can’t recall) and as a thank you, she gave me a small notebook and pencil made in Florence, Italy. As a teenager I was floored, because it was something I truly cherished, especially receiving it from her, my counselor.

She taught me that even the smallest gestures of gratitude make a big impact. To this day, 34 years later, I still write in it all my favorite inspirational quotes.

Krishna Pranav ’88 At Cathedral High School, Caroline was the one and only counselor, the academic advisor, the college counselor and the jobs resource person. She knew every one of her 300+ students and how best to support each one. It was only years after we merged that I realized that women from Cathedral went to Cal, Brown, Columbia, etc., because of her work. Caroline quietly supported each student to find the best fit for college.

Caroline was one of the most well-connected people I ever knew. She helped students at Cathedral get well-paying jobs after graduation. She was hard working, arrived early and stayed late, and was willing to go the extra mile for every student. She was very generous with her time, care and support.

Janet Castagnola Shapiro, Director of Professional Development, Instructor of Mathematics What I remember most about Steve, as a football coach, was his ability to focus on the task at hand while not taking things too seriously. Whether at practice or during a game, Steve had a way of reducing tension through subtle humor. His players respected and responded to him, and I appreciated how, through his style, Steve could help me keep my head in the game. For me, he made coaching football a whole lot of fun.

Mr. Bertola was not the most cuddly, accessible teacher on the DIRECTOR OF PROFESSIONAL faculty back then, but he was the one to reignite my childhood DEVELOPMENT, INSTRUCTOR IN love of art and design. Taking his class as a second semester MATHEMATICS senior, I was not looking forward to the experience, especially considering how difficult his reputation was. My expectations were met immediately, as Mr. Bertola would harass me daily about being unshaven, out of dress code, etc. At the same time, however, he saw in my work the glimmer of talent, grudgingly murmuring, “Not bad, Pardini …” as he would dismissively pass my table.

During that tumultuous time of life, navigating graduation, sports, girls, college, my dad’s health issues, that classroom (and art) became my sanctuary, a place to escape and to discover my path. I thank Mr. Bertola to this day.

Cathy Williams was a character. She had a wonderfully dry sense of humor.

As a new teacher at Cathedral, she scared me a bit, but as I got to know her, I realized that she was a warm, caring, hardworking teacher. Students often hung out in her room just to talk with her after school.

She was a wonderful role model for the women at Cathedral: independent, strong and a lifelong learner. I recall her taking a series of classes on auto repair so that she could change flat tires herself and change the oil and spark plugs, etc., on her own. She took classes in middle eastern cooking and often brought some of her new cooking Steve Wilson, circa 1976 experiments to share with the faculty.

She introduced me to hummus over 40 years ago, long before it was a popular, SH’s varsity assistant sauntered to a post-game midfield handshake with his mainstream thing.

I joined Toby and Steve on a wondrous San Francisco afternoon, drinking beer and telling stories on the steps cut in the sidewalk outside of Toby’s rental up a steep hill on Broadway. Steve and I called him Toby. In one of many stories he told that day, maybe a tryout for his memoir in progress, Toby confided he had really been named after a Toby mug, an English pottery jug in the form of a seated person, and said to be named after Shakespeare's Sir Toby Belch.

Now, whether that was true or not I’m not sure because Toby could spin a good yarn. That day, however, I remember Toby deferring to Steve. A renowned storyteller met his match in Steve Wilson. And true to character, Steve initiated another future story by convincing us we should take turns rolling up in a sheet to roll down the hill. More intrigued by the lark than the actual derring-do, none of us rolled too far, but Steve had initiated another story.

Two masterful story tellers going on all afternoon. I wish I had taped that day or Steve had written his own story. I’d have chosen Robin Williams to play Steve if his memoir had been made a movie. Though not lookalikes, both had the same impish grin and zest for narrative and life.

CELEBRITIES AND WEALTHY With the onset of COVID-19, many colleges adjusted their policies to become test optional. This was in response to the fact that many students were unable — and still have not been able — to sit for the exams. These policies were enacted to ensure that no student would be disadvantaged in their process and to promote student well-being and safety, especially since there were already many other stressors related to the pandemic.

Additionally, many colleges were already considering employing test optional or test free policies and decided to use this opportunity to pilot such a program. During this admissions cycle alone, more than 1,400 colleges and universities announced they would move to a test optional policy for at least the 2020-21 cycle.

The Roundtable brings together a cross-section of SHC community members to offer their perspectives on compelling issues. In this edition of The Roundtable, we ask SHC College Advisors discuss the shift away from standardized testing in the college admissions process.

you automatically think, “Wow, she’s really smart.” And, that may be true. But, are we also saying that students who don’t score well on the SAT or ACT are not bright or capable of excelling in college?

College admissions is a system that favors families with the cultural capital to maneuver through all the obstacles and hidden hurdles that someone from a less privileged background doesn’t even know exists. SHC students are fortunate to have a safe school environment, firstrate teachers, counselors who can help them pick the right college prep courses and college advisors who can help them shape a college list, review essays and essentially help with putting forward the best application possible.

This all extends to testing — a system that disproportionately favors the wealthy or those with access to these advantages.

WHAT DOES THE STANDARDIZED TEST DO WELL? WHERE DOES IT FAIL? Ramiro Flores: Both the SAT and ACT provide colleges with a normed score that makes it easy to compare students from different schools and backgrounds.

It’s a very simple tool that can be used to compare applicants from literally anywhere. The problem is that nobody knows exactly what skills and abilities these tests are supposed to measure and how they are even relevant to college success. If you look at national test score distributions, the SAT and the ACT do a great job of sorting students by gender, race, and income based on some

measure of skill or ability that many people have falsely conflated with academic ability or assumed to be a great predictor of college success, which they are not. We do not have a national high school curriculum in the United States and in reality, not all students have the same opportunity to do well on these tests. There is a reason why test prep is a $1.2 billion industry.

Students who can afford high priced tutors, test preparation, take the test multiple times, and learn how to take a timed multiple choice test have always had a clear advantage.

Fundamentally, this is a question of access. When colleges look at their data sets and all the different variables that can influence a student’s success in college they come to the realization that most of the information they have isn’t very helpful and that they have over-interpreted the value of test scores for a very long time. Colleges know that test scores don’t provide any more predictive values than GPA. A student’s ability to find success in college has a lot more to do with noncognitive variables (confidence, grit, a strong support network) than a three-hour test taken on a Saturday morning. Colleges have been missing out on lots of really terrific students because of a false value they have placed on test scores.

Dr. Hollis: In the absence of SAT or ACT scores, the transcript will take center stage in determining how good an academic fit a student is for a particular institution. In addition to the GPA, admissions offices will look at how grades have trended during high school and whether the student took the most rigorous courses available to them, performed well in AP and honors courses, and continued to challenge themselves with a demanding senior year schedule of classes.

In short, they will look for evidence that the student made the most of the educational opportunities offered.

Admissions offices that rely on holistic review, including the University of California, will use the application's remaining elements in addition to the transcript in making decisions. The activities list, personal statement, supplemental essays, and letters of recommendation provide insight into the student's interests, interpersonal and social-emotional skills, life experiences, community engagement and contributions, and unique talents and abilities. Most colleges tell us reviewing applications without test scores will not look much different from review with scores.

Still, students will want to ensure the non-testing elements of their applications are as strong as possible.

LOOK TEN YEARS INTO THE FUTURE AND TELL US WHAT COLLEGE ADMISSIONS WILL LOOK LIKE IN 2030.

This gives an advantage on the testing to students who already have many advantages.

We all have multiple intelligences and we have many ways of approaching learning.

Those different intelligences need to be more respected in the college admission process and in life. As we have seen in 2020, college reps can make decisions without testing.

Even at schools that are working through an application pool that is full of highly qualified students, they can read without test scores.

Why put our students through it? I hope we all see this by 2030.

Privilege shows itself in the college search quickly — for example, families who can visit many campuses, sometimes many times, versus those for whom travel is just not in the budget. As I referenced above, privilege shows itself in the tutors, test-prep classes, and expensive extracurriculars available to some students, but not all students. I hope in the next ten years our society becomes more aware of historical factors that have created the unequal systems we have in our country and we are better able to close those divides.

College campuses often reflect these privilege gaps right in the first year. Spring break arrives and some students begin to plan ski trips, beach trips, and other adventures.

Other students are staying on campus to work, going home to work, or wishing they could find work. There are a lot of have/have not issues on college campuses and I would like to think we will address more of those challenges in the next ten years.

Maria Furtado: Since this is a pretty big question, I narrowed it down to three thoughts. My optimistic take on 2030 includes the elimination of most standardized testing, more campus community awareness of issues of privilege and how that affects the community and society as a whole, and a larger awareness among students and families that the world of higher education is There will be shifts in higher education in more than just the highly recognizable schools. the next ten years, probably starting this year.

DIVERSITY EQUITY INCLUSION

Inclusive Catholic community of faith. These words are written into the Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory mission, a statement from which all of our intentions and actions stem. They are integral to the school’s foundation as envisioned by our Founders — the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers. The Daughters and the Brothers commit their lives to serving the most vulnerable and marginalized, and theirs is a legacy that SHC is proud to perpetuate.

Today, as the nation faces a racial reckoning made urgent by the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, 14

SHC is steadfast in its commitment to examining issues around diversity, equity and inclusion in our own community.

In 2019, a group of SHC faculty members began gathering to uncover and articulate areas of school operations and curriculum in need of critique through a lens of diversity, equity and inclusion. The group, originally consisting of Assistant Director of Student Support Services and Piro Counselor Jessenia Mendoza, Counselor and Girls Varsity Basketball Coach LyRyan Russell ’97, former Instructor of Religious Studies Tanya Susoev ’04 and SHC’s librarian, Dr. Alicia Tapia, served as the driving force behind the creation of SHC’s Catholic Community Cohorts. College Advisor Dr. Angelica Bailon also contributed to these early discussions, and today she serves as SHC’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Coordinator. She explains, “The creation of the Catholic Community Cohorts, which focus on identity and community-based connections, was an immediate solution to fulfill a need within the student body.”

Today, there are eight Catholic Community Cohorts which provide a safe space for students with a shared identity to discuss the issues they are passionate about. Instructor of Science Mariflor Medrano serves as the faculty moderator for Kapamilya, SHC’s Filipino/Filipino-American CCC. “When I was growing up, we called groups like this culture clubs — I would say that they are clubs for cultures or identities that are

and school culture. In its inaugural year, the group aims to create an infrastructure to support the greater work to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are centered in the SHC educational experience. What is the foundation of that infrastructure? The adult community at SHC. “The focus this year has been faculty and staff professional development,” says Dr. Bailon. “We need to hold ourselves accountable to our mission of being an inclusive Catholic community, so the work right now is reflective. We need to interrogate our own beliefs and practices as educators so that we can acknowledge and improve upon the ways in which we perhaps are not an inclusive community.” SHC faculty and staff members have engaged in four professional development sessions in 2020 around identifying biases and having conversations about critical issues related to race, diversity and inclusivity at our school.

With the successful establishment of the CCCs, SHC administrators then sought to formalize the school’s efforts in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion and appointed Dr. Bailon as the coordinator for its initiatives.

As a result of the DEI focused professional development, faculty members have been inspired to closely examine their syllabi and classroom practices. For Dr. Tapia, this is essential work. “Ultimately, we’re concerned with the experience of our students. Do they see themselves represented in the curriculum? Whose voices need to be amplified? What texts are we reading in English? We have Asian American Literature and African American Literature, for example, and we should also pause to consider who is teaching those subjects as well.” While Dr. Tapia has observed that SHC instructors have always incorporated marginalized voices into their lesson plans, having formalized DEI initiatives in place helps to add intentionality to that work, and to bring a sense of cohesiveness across the curriculum as a whole.

Instructor of English Mike Knapp explains how the DEI professional development sessions have transformed the English Department as a whole, “Just this month we were excited to welcome Dr. Bailon to join our English Department meeting as we examined different mechanisms to audit our curricula using a DEI framework. These discussions were based on reviewing not only what we're teaching (in terms of titles and authors) but how we unpack their important lessons for our students.” Mike has gone even further, inspired by SHC’s DEI initiatives, “On a personal level, I've chosen to push myself to develop a more intentionally inclusive classroom experience for my students by making these issues the centerpiece of my annual professional development plan.”

“It’s been amazing to see how opening a space for us to be critical about our teaching has inspired faculty and staff across the board,” says Dr. Bailon.

At the core of SHC’s DEI initiatives is the student experience.

Dr. Bailon shares, “One of the strengths of our community is our diversity, and what we can improve upon is how that looks day to day, how we ensure that our students are able to express themselves in a way that feels authentic to them. The CCCs are such a strong indication that our students believe this work is important.”

Students are eager for the connection and validation they are receiving through the CCCs, and distance learning throughout the fall certainly did not slow them down. They have hosted movie nights, had guest speakers present in their virtual meetings, they have participated in various activities focused on self-identity, they have served in their communities, and across the board, students are embracing their leadership skills, some for the very first time. “The student leadership in the CCCs has been amazing,” says Dr. Tapia.

“What makes that particularly special is that students who might not typically find themselves as members of student council are able to bring their gifts to the table and contribute to our school community in such a meaningful way. And they have the support of their peers as well.”

By design, living into our mission of creating an inclusive Catholic community on campus ultimately includes the ways in which we express our values in the

greater community. The DEI Working Group turns to another key idea in our mission statement — We prepare students to become service-oriented leaders with a commitment to living the Gospel. Dr. Bailon reflects, “This work is not just an internal, SHC thing — we are training ourselves and our students to apply a lens of equity and justice to the world around us so that our students are empowered to build a better world. We want to educate our kids to lead and serve with compassion, with a sense of justice, and with a commitment to standing behind those who are marginalized in our society.” It starts, according to the DEI Working Group, in creating a safe high school home for all students. “I hope that SHC is a place where our programs and curriculum and culture give every single student and family a sense of belonging, and they can truly feel that we value and care about each of them.” Dr. Bailon continues, “That’s the big vision — that SHC is a space where students feel they belong, and where they are given the tools to fight for what they believe in and serve a bigger purpose.”

ver the last two centuries, Sacred Heart Cathedral has accumulated an incredible archive of historical objects, from awards and trophies to books, ledgers and furniture. We’re thrilled to share these mementos in this feature, From the Archives.

While most are familiar with the mythic Jerry Mahoney ’44 and his death in World War II, a recent encounter on social media unveiled another SH hero. Riordan alum Jim Cunningham got in touch with SHC to tell us the story of his uncle and SH grad Jim Curtin ’42 who joined the war effort and died flying a mission over Italy in 1944. Curtin played football at SH (good enough to be offered a scholarship by the University of Oregon), and Mr. CunCunningham graciously offered to donate Curtin's jersey and other memorabilia to SHC providprovid ed we display it properly. Plans are currently in place to appoint a fitting exhibit to this American hero.

ADMISSIONS pivots to new reality

I

n March of this year, SHC’s Admissions team was bringing another application season to a close. Decisions were communicated to families welcoming members of the Class of 2024 to the SHC family, and the team had its eye on preparing for another run of Summer Institute programming. Then with the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic, all plans, all expectations, all hopes for what the summer, let alone the next week, would hold, came to an abrupt halt.

The Admissions team huddled, iterated, ideated, and with an incredible amount of dexterity and ingenuity, they redesigned all of their program offerings to meet the needs of our prospective families amidst a global pandemic. How can we create opportunities for varied and authentic connection, virtually? That is, the team had to figure out how to share the magic of our school community which is undeniably palpable in person, in a socially-distant way.

First up — Summer Institute. Our summer programming for grammar school students provides an array of enrichment courses and athletic training opportunities that give students a genuine SHC experience. Participants are able to connect with faculty and coaches, they become familiar with our campus, and they can feel the energy of our school community. In March, the team was still hopeful for an in-person Summer Institute experience, but

by April it was evident that they would have to make a complete shift. In May, they decided to take the leap and offer a Virtual Summer Institute. It took reenvisioning existing sessions, omitting some sessions, and creating new sessions that would translate well in a virtual environment. As the team approached the opening day for registration, the fear set in. “Instead of all day sessions, we split our offerings into 2-hour morning sessions, and separate 2-hour afternoon sessions. If families wanted a full day, they could do that, but we were certainly aware of screen fatigue,” says Director of Enrollment Management Jonathan Lim. Admissions Manager Andreana Villa ’02 reflects, “We knew that families wanted

their kids to get outside and off of screens, but COVID-19 was also spreading, so we hoped that a virtual experience could be good for students who wanted to engage with SHC.” In the end, the summer Shamrock goodie box for prospective 8th graders programming was incredibly successful, most classes selling out within minutes.

As the summer carried on, San Francisco was able to keep infection rates down, allowing for a little more flexibility in summer camp guidelines. The Admissions team turned to the Hall of Fame Baseball Academy, SHC’s baseball summer camp after which all of our summer programming is modeled. “We were able to bring back baseball in small, in-person cohorts, from 9 am-noon, with all social distancing protocols in place,” says Lim. Athletes were able to connect with SHC coaches and train in our batting cages and on our Practice Field. In order to minimize exposure, attendance guidelines for the baseball camp were stringent, prohibiting players who were absent for any one session to return.

Every fall, the Admissions event offerings begin to ramp up with eighth grade Irish for a Day visits, Parent Visits and Open House. Again, the Admissions team shifted to create virtual experiences that would effectively convey the information, the interpersonal connection and the energy of an in-person event. “We had to approach everything differently, so we knew we had to partner with the Office of Communications & Marketing to ensure that the experiences we were creating were meaningful,” says Lim. Working with the original structure of each in-person experience, the Admissions team, in partnership with the Communications team, recreated Irish for a Day, Parent Visits, Open House, and an additional event – the Leadership Panel — to create the fullest experience possible for prospective families.

Eighth graders were offered the full Irish for a Day experience, with 33 virtual visits hosting more than 800 students, and additional dates slated for the spring semester. SHC faculty members welcomed Irish for a Day participants into their Zoom classes. “All of the instructors involved in Irish for a Day went above and beyond to make sure the students were engaged in their classes,” Villa shares.

In a typical year, parents have two opportunities to visit campus for a dedicated Parent Visit, and this year, the Admissions team hosted three Parent Visits which included a virtual tour and Q&A session with Admissions team members and student ambassadors.

Two Virtual Leadership Panels invited prospective families to hear from administrators, faculty and current students. Lim shares, “One of our biggest priorities was to create opportunities for families to get to know us that each offered

something unique to them. How can we create community with them at a distance?

One part of that was making sure that each opportunity was completely different, so that it didn’t feel like the same event over and over again. Making sure we could express a personal touch at different angles and from different perspectives was very important to us.”

Finally, the team tackled Open House — an event at which SHC typically welcomes nearly 4,000 people onto our campus each October. The Open House event is exactly

that — all of our academic departments, classrooms and cocurricular programs open their doors to visitors, with thousands of people traveling through classrooms, interacting with teachers, coaches and current students. In creating a virtual Open House experience, it was important to the team to simulate the in-person experience, to create the same energy that families feel as they walk through classrooms in Zoom rooms.

As the fall semester comes to a close, the Admissions team is working on its next program: Winter Institute. The institute will be conducted virtually, of course, with the safety of both our participants and our faculty and staff as the top priority. Lim reflects, “The whole experience has been like flying a plane while we’re building it. We simply have to adjust, mid-progress, when we’re heading into the unknown. But we’ll keep pushing forward to provide the most meaningful experiences possible for families who want to get to know us.”

By Mark Pardini ’88 The task was daunting: how would SHC convert their annual Open House for prospective families into an entirely virvirtual experience without melting down our digital communication channels?

This was no small feat given the sheer traffic expected: previous Open Houses had drawn up to 4,000 visitors to Gough and Ellis, and while those numbers weren’t expected in a digital setting, constructing an experience for 8th grade families that showed the true community, facilities, and general excellence of the school without crashing our website with a sudden surge of users was a problem that kept many awake at night.

The hub of the entire experience was a single web page on shcp.edu, which was specifically designed to push people out to the various “locations” via links and an interactive 3D campus map custom-built for the event.

The day of the event started quietly as many visitors first attended the streaming Principal presentation on a Zoom webinar. ightin’ Irish athletics may have been impacted by COVID-19, but that did not stop various SHC squads from training this fall in preparation for a December start to competition. In response to the pandemic, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) this summer postponed the resumption of athletic competition until December 2020 when the normal three-season schedule would be condensed into two, winter (Season 1) and spring (Season 2). This decision would result in some anomalies (girls and boys volleyball running concurrently in the winter, basketball moving to the spring), but the CIF’s decision centered on achieving the maximum amount of competition possible while balanced with the health of athletes and coaches (see Nocetti interview on facing page). Then, on December 2, the

CIF was forced to pivot again, pushing the beginning of Season 1 sports until January in response to the spike in COVID cases statewide. In their statement, the CIF wrote “The CIF is confident this decision is a necessary and reasonable action for our member schools, student-athletes, and school communities in light of the current statewide crisis.”

In preparation for competition, the SHC football program had been working out on Bill Henneberry ’48 Field three times a week while girls tennis and wrestling had both adopted a twice-weekly schedule. In addition, both the boys and girls lacrosse programs held weekly workouts on the field. Irish baseball has been hitting in the cages 2 to 3 times a week, and softball had begun to do the same twice a week. Coach Andy Chan’s cross-country program, meanwhile, had been working out virtually since May. Other SHC sports that have a high percentage of club involvement, such as soccer, volleyball, and basketball, had their student athletes working out with their clubs so as to limit them to one cohort and reduce risk. Before Thanksgiving, however, multiple positive COVID cases in different practice pods forced the SHC Athletic Department to temporarily suspend all team training, and no resumption date has yet been set.

“We've had to be very adaptable and flexible as the situation has evolved,” Athletic Director Phil Freed ’80 shared. “Preseason preparation is different. Because we can't be physically close to one another like we are used to, the approach to training is more cognitive, more fitness related.

Coaches have had to get creative in helping their players learn the skills of their particular sport.

RON NOCETTI ’86 In 2019, SHC alum Ron Nocetti ’86 was named Executive Director of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the governing body for all high school sports in the state.

Little could Nocetti have known how central a role his agency would play in the pandemic and in planning ahead for thousands of student athletes statewide. Note: this interview took place before the December 2 CIF announcement pushing Season 1 sports to January.

SEAMUS: HOW ARE YOU HOLDING UP? “I'm doing fine. I’ve really been heartened by all of the support of the athletic and school administrators up and down the state.”

SEAMUS: WHAT WAS THE HARDEST DECISION YOU HAD TO MAKE? “Obviously, cancelling the state basketball tournaments the day before they were slated to start was tough, but so was cancelling all spring sports. Your heart just goes out to all those players and coaches who didn’t get a season.”

SEAMUS: WHAT'S BEEN THE BIGGEST LOGISTICAL CHALLENGE? “Whenever you're dealing with over 1,600 schools, 800,000 athletes, 65,000 coaches and 60,000 officials, communication is always a challenge, even in the best of circumstances. Now, you’re still communicating with them, but the biggest challenge is providing the rationale that we are bound by the state health guidelines in our planning moving forward. We have a plan, a plan to start sports again in December, and we are in constant, weekly contact with the Governor's office and the state health agencies to do all that we can in making sure that happens.”

“Just as a personal note, I would say this to any coach or staff at SHC: go that extra step to connect with students right now, whether they are involved in athletics, arts, drama or music. I can remember how much it impacted me when Coach Fran, or Coach (Jerry) Phillips, Coach (John) Scudder ’73 or Coach (Tim) Burke ’70 would stop and chat with me during the day, just checking in to see how I was doing. Kids are really missing that connection right now.”

Justin Charles Love ’96 The SHC community continues to mourn the loss of Justin Love ’96, a member of our Athletics Hall of Fame who passed away unexpectedly on June 23, 2020, at the age of 41.

Love is survived by his parents, Charles and Gloria of San Francisco; wife, Katy, née Walter, Love, whom he married on June 23, 2006 in St. Louis, MO; children, Jamison Constance, Gideon Charles, Ellison Jean Love; brother, Jaie R. (Christina) Love of Vallejo, CA; a sister, Kimberlee Love Triggs of Oakland, CA; father in-law and mother-in-law, Robert (Constance) Walter of Mascoutah, IL; brothers-in-law; Robert (Angela) Walter, Nicholas (Elizabeth) Walter, Douglas Walter; sister-in-law, Magdalyn (Jeremy) McLeod. His father Charles is a longtime member and former Chairman of the Sacred Heart Cathedral Board of Regents.

Love was a standout athlete for the Irish, most notably as a three-year varsity basketball starter for head Coach Tim Burke ’70.

His senior season was one of the most memorable years in SHC basketball history, with Love, a rock solid 6'2" guard, leading the charge for a talented Irish squad. In the 1996 Bruce-Mahoney basketball game, Love knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter, guiding the Irish to a 66-52 win over St. Ignatius before 5,300 at USF’s War Memorial Gymnasium.

place, as well as avenge an earlier two point loss to Bellarmine, their only league defeat of the season to that point. The game lived up to the hype, as the contest came down to the final seconds. With less than ten seconds on the clock, the Bells had possession and were driving up the court. LyRyan Russell stole the ball and quickly passed to Justin Love, who knocked in the winning basket to give the Irish a 56-54 win. The victory improved SHC to 9-1 in WCAL play, and they maintained possession of first place to earn the top seed in the WCAL playoffs.

champion St. Francis. On the other side of the bracket, Bellarmine defeated St. Ignatius to set the stage for the rubber match between the Irish and the Bells to decide the 1996 WCAL Champion. At halftime, the Bells held a five point lead, and Coach Tim Burke ’70 decided to implement a full court press in the hopes of igniting his offense.

Love dominated the pivotal third quarter on both sides of the ball, playing stellar defense and scoring seven points in the frame. Love finished with a team high 18 points, as the Irish emerged victorious over the Bells 68-61. The win gave the Irish the 1996 WCAL Championship, their first such title since 1972. They finished the season with a No. 3 ranking in Northern California, and Justin Love was named co-player of the year in the WCAL.

After graduating from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Love continued his basketball career at the collegiate level, first for Canada College and then for St. Louis University. In a December 1998 game in his first year for the Billikens, Love dropped 24 points on No. 13 Kansas to lead unranked St. Louis to a stunning 78-64 upset victory. Love then helped lead the Billikens to a 2000 NCAA Tournament appearance, and he was named as a first team All-Conference USA selection that season. For his extraordinary contribution to St. Louis University basketball, Justin Love was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

Love then played for more than a dozen years professionally, including stints with NBA summer leagues, and in France, Italy, China, and Latvia. He spent the last six seasons of his professional career in Ukraine, and returned to the United States after the 2014-15 season. In 2017, Love then became the head coach of Mascoutah High School, located in southwestern Illinois.

Many of his family members and former teammates and coaches were in attendance at the celcelebratory dinner held in the Student Life Center, with many former players swapping stories and reliving memories from the 1996 championship season. Love was extraordinarily proud to be a Fightin’ Irish alumnus, and he always relished the chance to return to campus for a visit. His sudden passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Our SHC community will continue to hold the Love family in our prayers, and we will forever be grateful for his imim measurable contributions to Sacred Heart Cathedral. 1944 1 Ed O’Connor’s milestone 95 birthday is on Christmas Eve 2020. Ed fondly remembers playing lightweight basketball and being taught by his favorite teacher, Brother Conrad. Attending Sacred Heart was a “family affair” as Ed had many cousins who graduated before and after him which kept him continually involved. He shares his alumni status and deep love for SH with his son-in-law, Tom Owen ’69, and his grandson, John Passaglia ’03. currently a graduate student at Harvard University's School of Education. Kimberly has a special interest in equitable education for low-income, first generation college students, understanding the pedagogy of how adults learn, and finding ways to continue supporting our college students during the pandemic.

Prior to Harvard, Kimberly went to undergraduate nursing school at the Loyola University of Chicago. She has worked as a bedside nurse at the San Francisco Veteran's Hospital and spent several years at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Her most recent work has been at the University of San Francisco's School of Nursing where she taught as a nursing teacher in the undergraduate school.

Kimberly currently resides in Louisville, Kentucky with her two boys and her husband, Alex. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, reading with her kids, and cycling the nearby trails. Her first taste of the spotlight was at SHC's theater company where she played "Puck" in a Midsummer's night dream.

Lois Gilliam Lois Gilliam, former SHC staff member, passed away on October 2, 2020, on the Feast of Our Holy Guardian Angels.

Lois served at SHC for a quarter century from 1988 until her retirement in 2014. On campus, Lois was known to put a smile on the faces of everyone she interacted with, and having served in both the attendance and main offices, she touched the lives of many. Those close to Lois remember her sense of humor, her loving spirit, and her fierce sense of independence. Director of Athletics and Summer School Principal Phil Freed ’80 remembers, “Lois worked many summers with me as the secretary, and we had a lot of laughs together. I always looked at her as my second mom.” Lois is the loving mother of Rhonda (Bill) Hontalas, Fred (Debbie) Gilliam, Donna Gilliam (Rod Corbett), and Hunter (Michelle) Gilliam ’88. She adored her grandchildren Jacquelyn Hontalas, Jessica (Jeffrey) Cotton ’04, Daniel and Mackenzie Gilliam, Richard Gilliam (deceased), Jon Lucas Gilliam-Corbet, Alexa and Zachary Gilliam; and her great grandchildren Dante Gilliam, and Trey and Jaxson Cotton.

Jason Andrew Cortez ’97 Jason Cortez ’97 passed away on October 7, 2020, while on duty with the San Francisco Fire Department. Jason served in the SFFD Engine Company 3, the busiest engine company in the nation. Jason grew up in the Potrero Hill neighborhood and attended both Cathedral School for Boys and Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory. After high school, he went on to attend Saint Mary’s College of California where he played Division I basketball as a Gael. Jason was drawn to public service, first working as a paramedic and later graduating from the 118th SFFD academy. He found his dream job at Station 3. Jason was the loving husband of Patricia Leung, and caring father to his sons Jackson and Greyson. Those who miss Jason most remember his wit, generosity, love of the San Francisco Giants and 49ers, and his devotion to his family.
