or SHC families, faculty and staff, the Honor Roll of Investors holds special meaning. The publication serves as an invitation to pause in gratitude for all of the blessings bestowed upon our community, to look back upon the year in awe of our strength as an educational institution, and to acknowledge that together, we are helping to transform the world’s most precious resource—our youth.

The 2016-17 academic year brought many successes to the SHC community. Our parent community came together to raise more than $1.3 million through the Parent Pledge Program, and our students raised a record-breaking $238,000 through the 27th Annual Walkathon. On the heels of the successful science facilities renovation, the 2020Vision Campaign brought much needed improvements to the English Department, while our special events, including the 40th Annual Irish Invitational and the Spring Gala: Studio 1055, continued to bring in critical funds while celebrating this incredible school community. Year after year, SHC proves to be a place where the Bay Area’s brightest students want to grow. During the last admissions cycle, Parent Visits and Irish for a Day sold out in record time, and Open House was attended by more than 3,500 individuals. Our burgeoning Robotics team secured a dedicated space within the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center, and they are currently building it out to their needs. Our Visual & Performing Arts Program produced awe-inspiring performances, our athletics program enjoyed countless successes, including a first-ever WCAL Championship for Frosh Boys Soccer, and our students continually enjoyed the perks of our urban campus with field trips to Dolby Laboratories, Inc., and Twitter. In May we welcomed the Class of 2017 to our alumni community, and in August, we embraced the newest members of the SHC family, the Class of 2021. As our school community grows each year, we reflect upon the boundless support of the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers, along with our dedicated parents, alumni, faculty and staff, community partners and financial investors. English Classrooms Renovation

t SHC we often talk about studentcentered learning, and we challenge ourselves to manifest the buzzword into real practices. Generally, the term describes a teaching methodology that prioritizes collaboration and replaces lectures with active learning—in this approach, satisfying the intellectual need of the students is the primary focus. As Assistant Principal for Academics Joan O’Neill elaborates, “In learning, ideas move between people, taking new shapes and sparking new connections. Effective classrooms should facilitate active, flexible engagement so that students and teachers can easily ‘pull up a chair’ and build on or challenge one another’s thinking. Flexible seating reinforces for our students their shared responsibility for our learning community, from choosing a high-backed reading chair or a standing desk from which to work. Floor-toceiling whiteboards and windows wide open to the world allow our students to work with big ideas and remind them that the real world needs their questions and their ideas.”

On the heels of the successful, multi-year renovation to our science facilities, the English department is now enjoying their own classroom transformation. With an environment that inspires learning at the foundation of the improvements, students and faculty are already noticing a change. “The natural lighting, movable furniture and floorto-ceiling whiteboards have all helped tap into students’ collaborative potential. Students regularly move around and work in groups, which helps widen the learning experience for kinesthetic and tactile learners,” says English Department Chair Paul Barnes. Prioritizing student-centered learning demands innovative and inspiring learning spaces. SHC is blessed with a community of supporters that allow us to invest in our facilities, and ultimately, our students. We are especially grateful to those who contributed so generously to the English Department renovation, including the following investors.

CLYDE COURNALE ’44 Clyde Cournale ’44 attended Sacred Heart High School on the heels of the Great Depression, and nearly did not graduate. With his father out of work, the family scrambled to borrow money to pay tuition and keep Clyde in school. After graduation, Clyde promptly enlisted in the US Navy and served in the Pacific during WWII. Following the war, Clyde graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and joined his family firm, Cournale & Co. For the next 60 years he worked passionately in the real estate industry, never forgetting the lessons he learned from the Christian Brothers as a student at Sacred Heart. He was a 40+ year member of the Park Presidio Lions Club, a local organization serving the Richmond District. Clyde became active in the SHC alumni community in his 60s by reacquainting with old friends and attending off campus lunches. His son, Curt, shares, “We thought his commitment to SHC could be

LUKE GILLIGAN & CATHERINE LENNY For current parents Luke Gilligan and Catherine Lenny, investing in SHC benefits more than the on campus community. “When we learned about all the ways SHC impacts its students and the broader community, we were happy to help in any area where the school felt it would benefit the students most.” That area happened to be the English classrooms, which needed an update. Luke and Catherine contributed to the renovation, helping to provide English students with flexible and collaborative learning spaces. Their son, Liam ’20, is thriving in his second year at SHC. “He has definitely benefited from having some incredible teachers who are extremely generous with their time both during and outside of class. enhanced by establishing a scholarship in his name for his 80th birthday. Family members contributed to help endow the scholarship, and my dad’s commitment to the school extended to his trust.” With his passing in the summer of 2016, Clyde contributed generously to the English classroom renovation, as well as to his endowed scholarship. Curt, who continually finds inspiration in his father’s generosity through his own service and philanthropy, hopes more alumni families consider contributing to the cause his father cared for so deeply. “I encourage other members of the SHC community to consider the school in their charitable endeavors. I find it rewarding to receive (and share) reports from the school on the students we support through my father’s scholarship. With his passing last year, I am especially grateful that we established the scholarship during his lifetime, so he could help fund it and find pride in the legacy he created to help students at his alma mater.”

Parent engagement at SHC is important to Catherine and Luke, who in addition to their English Department contribution, also participate in the annual Irish Invitational Golf Tournament, Spring Gala and Walkathon. Active engagement as a parent also has other benefits, as Catherine explains, “... shared values with other parents, the sense of community, and fun atmosphere,” are all vital to her experience as an SHC mom. In the end, Luke and Catherine view their contributions as a way to model generosity to their children. “It feels extremely satisfying to give to SHC because it directly impacts young people’s lives in a positive way. It’s important for us as parents to set an example for our own kids about the importance of giving back to your community in whatever way you can.”

Heritage Society The Heritage Society honors the vision and generosity of alumni and friends who name SHC as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Fundraising Events • 2016-2017 SHC extends its gratitude to all who donated to the Spring Gala: Studio 1055, the 40th Annual Irish Invitational Golf Tournament, the 27th Annual Walkathon and the 2nd Annual Billy Mac ’67 Memorial Golf Tournament. Event donors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events. SPRING GALA Close to 400 guests, 100 volunteers, a 13-member steering committee, 392 underwriters, advertisers, auction donors and supporters came together for a wonderful night in support of SHC students. The annual Parents Association Spring Gala, our premier community-wide fundraiser, raised more than $260,000 to fund the renovation of our English classrooms, faculty professional development, student scholarships, travel grants and more. IRISH INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The sold-out 2017 Irish Invitational and Fightin’ Irish Athletics Night took place on a gorgeous June day with 144 golfers playing the prestigious Lake Merced Golf Course. After a successful 18 holes, guests enjoyed dinner in support of the SHC Athletic Program. The event raised nearly $60,000. WALKATHON SHC students inspired the entire community by raising more than $230,000 at the close of the 27th Annual Walkathon. We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends, our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2016 Walkathon supported the transformation of the science facilities, the I2 program, student scholarships and student travel grants. Congratulations to the students on another successful Walkathon! BILLY MAC ’67 MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT In its second year, friends and family of Bill McDonagh ’67 hosted 54 golfers at the beautiful Crystal Springs Golf Course on October 3. Later, the golfers were joined by nearly 60 additional guests to enjoy a dinner in celebration of Bill’s lifel. The event raised more than $15,000 in support of the Bill McDonagh Endowed Scholarship Fund. The Class of 2017 kick off the 27 th Annual Walkathon at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park.

Coming Home

lumni who return to SHC to serve as faculty or staff members share a unique connection with their students, as Instructor of English Kim Pacatte ’05 describes, “When you teach at the school you attended, there’s a deep connection with the institution and the students. I walked the same halls. I shared the same teachers. I studied some of the same material. I ran the same cross-country courses. These connections build sturdy foundations in my relationships with the students here, and that is very important to me.”

As a student at SHC, Kim’s most formative experiences include those shared with her cross-country teammates—training together, encouraging each other and traveling for meets. In fact, any activity that involved community building left an imprint on Kim, including winning a radio call-in contest that brought City High to campus for a performance. She lends her ever-increasing love of writing and literature to Instructor of English Jim Jordan and Assistant Principal for Academics Joan O’Neill, “They helped me understand that communication doesn’t have to be pretentious. The best writing is

clear and approachable. I like to think that the best teachers are, too.” After graduation, Kim went on to receive an English degree from the University of California at Berkeley, then returned to SHC for a few short years as assistant to the Dean while working toward a master’s in curriculum design from the University of San Francisco. Never straying far from her Lasallian Vincentian roots, she took an English instructor position at St. Mary’s College High School in Berkeley where she eventually served as the English department chairwoman and the JV Cross Country and Distance Track coach. Six years later, an opening at her alma mater arose, and she felt it was time to return, “Before returning to SHC, I wanted to experience a different high school environment and grow as an educator. I absolutely love this community. St. Mary’s College High School will always have a place in my heart, but SHC is home.”

Philanthropy’s Next Generation

f all the lessons Katherine learned during her four years at SHC, there is one in particular that inspired this young alumna to give back to her alma mater. “SHC helped me learn that you need to really honor who you are, no matter what other people think. I gave to SHC because of how it has helped shape the person I am today.” After graduation, Katherine Kelly ’14 headed to Montana State University, Bozeman, and today, she is wrapping up her studies in the North Bay, working toward a park and recreation management degree to give back to her local community while pursuing her passion: the outdoors. While in school she works part-time and recently gave her earnings to the SHC Girls Golf Program and the Kairos Retreat efforts. “Kairos was a great experience that helped me get closer to and better understand myself and my classmates.” Katherine also played on the SHC Girls Golf team for two years, JV her junior year and varsity her senior year. She hopes her gift affords today’s golf team with the same incredible experiences she had as a golfer, “I hope they get to play some nice courses and develop the program to get more girls interested in the sport.” Katherine took advantage of several travel and service opportunities throughout her time at SHC, including a Close Up trip to Washington, DC, for former President Obama’s second inauguration, VENAVER immersion in New Orleans, and a family hunting safari in South Africa. She still holds close to her heart the faculty members who influenced her development at SHC: Director of Studies Kate McFadden who inspired critical thinking around Richard Connell’s The Most
