A N OPUS OF GIVING
“Ican remember it to this day. It’s a very vivid memory,” Claire Spencer reflected.
Claire was three years old. She sat on the steps of her family home’s staircase and listened. Her father, Mark, wanted his children to learn to play the piano, so he hired a piano teacher. Her older sister, Karen, was in the middle of her lesson. She couldn’t see what was happening, but she could hear it. Melody. Rhythm. Tempo. She was transfixed. After her sister completed her lesson, the piano was open to play. She saw her chance and ran to the piano and sat down. She struck the keys and played the exact song her sister was taught. Her mother, Frances, who was in the kitchen, and her dad, who was with her brothers, heard the piano. “My father was in shock,” she said. “I was just playing what I was hearing. I didn’t know how to read music. I didn’t even know music existed, but that was the beginning of it all.”
From that moment on, Claire followed her passion for music and shared it with others—and that love for music serendipitously led to a path of supporting the students of Sacred Heart Cathedral.
Claire was born in El Paso, Texas but moved around with her family because her father was a comptroller in the Army and was stationed all over the globe, including Turkey, Washington D.C and Hawaii. They eventually made their way to San Francisco’s Presidio Army Base in 1968 and after his retirement, they settled in San Rafael’s Terra Linda district. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences in 1970 and later earned a Master’s in Piano Repertoire and Piano Performance and a Master’s in Pedagogy from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont.
Claire met Sacred Heart graduate Will Spencer ’65 at a pub in Sausalito shortly after her trip from Rome. They immediately connected and eventually married and had two children. Will, who eventually became the owner of FW Spencer & Son, Inc., a leading plumbing and mechanical contracting business, introduced Claire to Sacred Heart Cathedral. Not only was he a proud alum but he was also very active within the community as a member of the school’s Board of Regents, and he and Claire invested in every major capital project, including the construction of the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center, William Spencer ’65 & Claire Spencer Second Floor Science Classrooms, Sister Caroline Collins, D.C. Theater and the Chorus Classroom. They were also generous investors in the school’s endowed scholarship fund. Will and Claire attended countless school functions, which opened her eyes to not only the educational opportunities and resources available to SHC students but also the joy and camaraderie amongst the students. “We would go to all the dinner dances and gatherings. Every single time we were there the chorus would always come and sing…What impressed me was that the students always supported each other, and they were happy for each other’s success,” she said.
After Will’s unexpected passing in 2013, Claire persevered and continued to support and attend community events. Her passion for the arts made her a regular at many school performances, including plays, concerts and chorus performances. It is also one of the reasons why she continues to invest in student success and outcomes. “These kids work so hard, and to have to go to school regularly and then adding onto that music, practicing and rehearsing—it is a sacrifice. There were kids from all walks of life, and that really impressed me. That stayed with me even after Will died. That’s one reason why I continue to support the school.”

After spending time in Rome after college, Claire returned to the Bay Area and began teaching first grade in Santa Rosa. “Teaching was the best thing I could have ever done because I like to be goofy and you can be anything you want when you’re in school with kids. The only requirement I had when I got my job was that I needed to have a piano for teaching because I incorporated music in everything I did,” she said.
Someone who has witnessed, first-hand, Claire’s continued support is Director of Instrumental Music Tiv Cumberbatch, whose students have performed at venues throughout the City, including the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, Sister Caroline Collins, D.C. Theater, Kezar Stadium and the Chase Center. For every performance, Cumberbatch could always count on seeing one person in the audience—Claire.“ I was quickly made aware of Claire’s presence as an influential investor, lover of the arts and key member of our school community,” Cumberbatch said. “What Claire Spencer has done for the SHC community has quite literally changed the lives of students. Access to resources like guest artists, quality equipment and opportunities to travel has inspired generations of students to continue to hone their craft post-high school, with some even choosing the arts as a career. That is the greatest gift that can ever be given: opportunity.”
The Claire Spencer Endowment for the Arts is a fund that Claire created recently that will impact future generations of SHC students. This latest investment from Claire was established to provide students and instructors with the very best programs, facilities and equipment, with the aim of cultivating in them a lifetime love and appreciation for the arts.
“Claire is an exemplar in our community. Her generosity is a God-given grace. She understands the importance and value of a Sacred Heart Cathedral education not only because it is a faithbased, whole-person approach but also because the Lasallian-Vincentian education is grounded in an appreciation for the visual and performing arts,” President Melinda Skrade said. “The Endowment will deepen and expand our mission impact through transformative, immersive learning experiences grounded in the charisms of the Daughters and the Brothers.”
To honor Claire’s role and the Spencer family’s decades-long support, the school named the space in front of the entrance to the theater as the Claire Spencer Theater Lobby. “It’s amazing. I get really emotional, really easy. I’m just so happy that the kids have a place to be and that it’ll be there for a long time. It won’t go away anytime soon,” She said. “I think giving to Sacred Heart Cathedral is probably the best investment I made, versus all the other investments.”
Years ago, when the theater was under construction, Claire had donated a Yamaha baby grand piano to the school. A faculty member asked if the piano was in tune. She went to check on it, and the piano was open to play. Claire sat and began to play a piece from a recital when she was young, Chopin Opus 53 Polonaise in A flat. (She also played this masterpiece during the grand opening of the theater in October 2010). She kept playing and playing, unaware that anybody was listening. The SHC choir, at the time, was in the middle of rehearsals. “I didn’t know this, but all the kids that were there to rehearse for the choir came behind me, and they were all standing there listening to me. I had no idea they were there. It was just incredible.”
At that very moment, she was three years old again and playing the piano in her old family home. Instead of her loved ones listening in amazement, she was sharing her love of music with SHC students and inspiring them and the generations to come to follow their passions.

Sacred Heart Cathedral enjoyed its most successful Walkathon in school history with a record-setting $288,000 in gifts, smashing last year’s record of $265,000.
The efforts by the community for the 34th Annual Walkathon–a student-led fundraiser aided by families, alumni and investors–will support the Carl Gellert & Celia Berta Gellert Atrium renovation in the Student Life Center on the La Salle Campus, as well as student scholarships and student travel grants.
