B
y design, the Honor Roll of Investors is a reflective publication — one that looks back over the previous fiscal year to acknowledge Sacred Heart Cathedral’s vast and proud community of supporters. As I write, our entire student body is on campus, together in person at long last. It is a moment many of us have envisioned and prayed for over these many months living through a global pandemic. It has not been an easy journey, and the journey is by no means complete, but I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this incredible community that has come so far together. We began the 2020-21 academic year in a distance learning model, learning as we went along and constantly adjusting to the ever-changing nature of the pandemic. Our major fundraising and school events were either cancelled or reimagined — a virtual Walkathon, a Grab-a-Crab Drive Through, WeekIrish, Irish Invitational Wine Country Weekend. Visual & Performing Arts students used video editing apps to create collaborative performances, Mass celebrations and prayer services were held on Zoom, and instructors went above and beyond to provide the highest quality instruction possible, virtually. By last spring semester, we welcomed students, faculty and staff back to campus in a hybrid learning model, decreasing the number of students and adults on campus at any given time in order to maintain the highest level of safety for our entire community. Teachers carried the difficult task of teaching in-person and distance learning cohorts simultaneously, students learned to toggle between learning on campus and at home, and we all hoped and prayed for our entire community to be together again. And today, we are. The seemingly small joys are not lost on us: students eating lunch together on the Practice Field, instructors engaging full classes, students singing, arm in arm, onstage during a spirit rally, band practicing in the courtyard, student-athletes preparing for the next Bruce-Mahoney game. We revel in all of these God-given moments that felt out of reach not so long ago. It is because of our investors that we are able to provide the safest learning environment for our students as we continue to navigate new phases of this pandemic together. It took an incredible amount of imagination, innovation, adjustment and resources to reach this moment. We are beyond grateful. In this issue of the Honor Roll, we celebrate you, our investors who stand by our mission to serve the students entrusted to our care today and for years to come.

HONORING MRS. MARY GAVIN
I
n the mid-late 1960s at the corner of Ellis and Gough streets, life was very different for our students. This was a time when students from the recently closed St. Vincent High School would enroll into a new school — Cathedral High School. It was a time when classes were led by the religious, lay teachers remained in the single digits, and the most advanced technology on campus was the electric typewriter. The merger that would join Cathedral and Sacred Heart high schools was still more than two decades away. By nearly all measures, life at SHC today is completely different, yet the steadfast pride our alumni feel for their alma mater has remained.
Pacific. After placing all of her best French students into speaking roles, Gail — who struggled with the language — feared there were no roles for her to fill. Gail recalls Mrs. Gavin addressing her in a moment of despondence, “She said, ‘Of course not everyone speaks French, so Ms. Crivello will serve as our English translator and Master of Ceremonies!’ I will never forget that kindness,” Gail recalls. Today, more than 50 years since her time at Cathedral, Gail still holds close to her heart Mrs. Gavin’s generosity. She hopes, with the endowed scholarship, her memory lives on. “I’m just the instrument through which she worked — to continue her contributions and mine — to the future students of Sacred Heart Cathedral.”
Gail Crivello ’67 remembers so much of her time at St. Vincents and later, Cathedral, fondly. As a member of the first graduating class from Cathedral, her high school experience was forever colored by the community of peers and teachers that impacted her life as a young woman. Gail was so touched by the kindness and generosity of her French teacher, Mrs. Mary Gavin, that she created an endowed scholarship to honor her memory. Mrs. Gavin, then one of only a few lay teachers at Cathedral, taught French and sophomore level English. To Gail and many of her peers, Mrs. Gavin represented a future they could envision for themselves, “She truly added to our education by the very fact that she was a lay teacher who was married and had children. It made her real to us.” She was a woman of small stature and tremendous presence who was always impeccably dressed, and always left an impression on her students. Of the many acts of generosity and kindness Mrs. Gavin bestowed upon her students, one in particular stands out for Gail. It was the year Mrs. Gavin led her French classes in a production of the Broadway musical South

WeekIrish, Sacred Heart Cathedral’s week of giving, was a huge success this past year! The week was full of fun opportunities to connect, reminisce and give. From pizza and cocktail kits expertly crafted by SHC parent-owned A16 and Rye on the Road, to a virtual workout with Coach Colin Peuse, a De Paul Scholar Reunion and silent auction, the SHC community came together to show their Irish Pride. 1WeekIrish also marked the launch of the Brother Joseph Fabiano, FSC, and Sister Frances Meyer, DC, endowed scholarships, created to ensure their good work continues to benefit SHC students now and into the future. With more than $213,000 raised throughout the week, 1WeekIrish is a perfect example of the incredible feats we can accomplish when we come together as a community.

acred Heart Cathedral Preparatory’s Walkathon is traditionally held in September, during the first weeks of the academic year. It has always served as an incredible display of community building early in the fall, setting the stage for the year ahead. Last academic year, to adhere to local health guidelines around large gatherings, the Walkathon was held virtually in the spring. Students were invited to get outside and to get moving in their own neighborhoods while documenting their individual celebrations. Some students walked with small groups, others with family, some on their own. SHC students brought the spirit of the Walkathon wherever they went, and documented the experience along the way!
“The Walkathon is important because it challenges students to step out of their comfort zones and ask others to help support their community. The Walkathon is a great example of SHC’s motto, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve … It is rare to feel welcomed by every person you meet in such a big school. The Walkathon was one of the best portrayals of this inclusiveness. Seeing everyone come together to support the school was always exciting.” —Tyler Do ’21 “The Walkathon is such a fun, community-building activity that brings the students together and gives back to the school at the same time! I am looking forward to the Walkathon this school year because it’s going to be very fun to be with everyone like we were during my freshman year, and I’m so excited to be together as a school community again!”

PIRO SCHOLAR PROGRAM: A PATH TO SUCCESS
I
n 2004, Sacred Heart Cathedral welcomed 13 students into its first cohort of Piro Scholars. Today, more than 15 years later, the Program is composed of 80 students across all grade levels, each finding a high school home in SHC and forever altering the trajectory of their lives. The Piro Scholar Program was developed in honor of its namesake, Sister Teresa Piro, DC — a Daughter of Charity who dedicated her life to serving the vulnerable and marginalized. The program aims to transform the lives of its scholars by providing academic, social and emotional support, in addition to financial assistance and community building opportunities for both the students and their families. Piro Scholars often hail from some of the most marginalized neighborhoods in San Francisco, and most identify as first generation, that is, children of immigrants and the first in their families to pursue a high school diploma and college degree. The program’s measure of success, however, is not simply defined by matriculation to a four-year university, but by the scholars’ sense of agency — their capacity to envision, pursue and claim their best selves. As Director of the Piro Program and Student Support Services Carlisha Washington expounds, “We are here to help our scholars unlock the future they see for themselves. It’s very important to us that they understand that we are not saviors, but stewards of God and only one of their many support systems.” For the Piro Scholar Program, setting the stage for a successful high school experience starts before their first day of freshman year. By the time fall semester begins, Piro Scholars have already spent a significant amount of time at SHC, familiarizing themselves with our campus, community and culture while creating connections with both peers

and faculty alike. This time is critical in creating a sense of belonging for our scholars, whose first-generation experience navigating high school life is often just as complex as it is transformative. Assistant Director of Student Support Services and Piro Scholar Counselor Jessenia Mendoza explains, “We want our scholars to own their experience at SHC, to know that they deserve their education, that they deserve to be here.” In unison, Carlisha and Jessenia proclaim, “We tell them this all the time!” During the summer before freshman year, Carlisha and Jessenia lead their scholars through a close read of Renee Watson’s Piecing Me Together, the story of a young black student’s experience attending a private school on scholarship. “We dissect that book to help students strengthen their sense of identity — not by how the outside world perceives them, but by how they perceive themselves,” Carlisha says. When the school year begins, Piro Scholars participate in an Academic Study Community (ASC)— a before school curriculum that includes learning strategies, study skills building, promoting self-advocacy, and building confidence. Of the many tools gained in ASC during their ninth grade year are the communication skills necessary to confidently interact with teachers and other members of the adult community. It is truly a college preparatory skill that sets students up for success beyond their four high school years. “Skills like how to compose an email to a teacher, or how to talk to teachers are absolute gems. In college, professor office hours are so important, so we work hard at helping them understand how important these things will be for them in the future,” says Carlisha. By sophomore year, Carlisha and Jessenia want the scholars to comfortably drop into their academic

routines, to begin to recognize their strengths, as Jessenia says, “We want them to fly.” Integral to the academic success of each of the Piro Scholars is Director of Studies Kate McFadden, who works closely with the program to ensure each student's course of study remains on a college-bound trajectory. “Junior year is when things get real,” says Carlisha. It’s a time of research and planning, and working closely with the SHC college advising team on self-assessments and career goal planning. As a practice, Piro students are encouraged to think big in terms of college matriculation — to create a dream list of schools then work to hone in on schools that play to their strengths, goals and fit factors. College acceptances begin to roll in during the spring semester of senior year, and by this time, Carlisha and Jessenia want to see their scholars invoke the sense of agency they have worked to build over the years. “I always emphasize to the (continued on page 19)

THE DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY FOUNDATION
T
he story of the Daughters of Charity Foundation is inseparable from the story of the women, both religious and lay, that have dedicated, and continue to dedicate Sr. Joyce Weller, DC and Sr. Chris Maggi, DC their lives to the charism of St. Vincent De Paul — service to the poor. Though, as Sr. Joyce Weller, DC, explains, their work and effort asks not for praise, “It’s very Vincentian — we don’t need to be recognized. We don’t need anything but the joy of witnessing these young people grow.” The young people to which Sr. Joyce refers includes all of the children, youth and families that the Daughters serve in their ministries of education, advocacy, eldercare, and social service. As a Daughters of Charity and Christian Brothers sponsored school, we experience firsthand the blessings bestowed upon Sacred Heart Cathedral by the Daughters and their foundation in the potential and promise of our students. Officially established in 1985, the Daughters of Charity Foundation was created to help focus the fundraising and giving efforts of the Daughters of Charity in the Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (formerly the Province of the West). Quiet followed the official establishment of the foundation for a number of years until the early 1990s when Verle Casey Pozzo, a lay woman serving on both the hospital and orphanage boards at the time, was brought in as a member of the foundation’s board, along with other influential and well-resourced women committed to the work of the Daughters. Today, the foundation continues its tradition of an all-woman board, modeled after St. Vincent De Paul’s original Ladies of Charity — a group of lay women who came together at the request of St. Vincent in 1617 to help support his work in Paris. As a Lady of Charity herself, Verle
worked alongside Sister Teresa Piro, DC, the first executive director at the foundation. Over the course of Sr. Teresa’s decade-long tenure with the foundation, she helped to raise upwards of $10 million. According to Sr. Joyce, it was a feat aided by the generosity of Verle, who had been married to one of the co-founders of the United Parcel Service. “By the time of Verle’s passing, she had already been so generous to the foundation. She would underwrite almost every project, and when she passed in the late 90s, much to everyone’s shock, she left her entire estate to the Daughters of Charity Foundation in the form of UPS stock.” Today, the foundation gives solely to the ministries of the Daughters of Charity, and here at Sacred Heart Cathedral, that support comes in many different forms, including scholarships for students in need. Sister Chris Maggi, DC, current executive director of the foundation reflects, “We’re so blessed because we often get thank you letters from scholarship recipients and share their joy at being able to fulfill their dreams, to grow to their full potential — academically, spiritually, physically, emotionally.” As a religious order nearly 400 years old, the Daughters of Charity have become incredibly adept at adjusting to the times and identifying areas of need. For example, today the Daughters of Charity sponsored St. Louise Resource Services helps families who find themselves on the margins — both documented and undocumented — locate and access health care and other vital social services. According to Sr. Joyce, honoring their charism is a day to day practice, “We really look at what the needs of the day are, and try to respond to that need.” Both Sr. Joyce and Sr. Chris agree that reaching people early can be exceptionally transformative, “When you start with children you plant a seed. We can prevent all of the outcomes we worry about when thinking about a person affected by poverty simply by starting young, developing strong values, opportunities and a mission within.”

(continued from page 14) scholars that the more options you have, the more choices you have. There is so much power in that.” Throughout a Piro Scholar’s entire four years at SHC, the program also offers tremendous support to parents who are often navigating the college preparatory experience for the first time along with their children. Carlisha and Jessenia hold regular office hours specifically to support parents, along with meetings every quarter, an annual Christmas gathering, sessions around college applications, college financing, and more. As they look to the future, Carlisha and Jessenia aim to build out their support system for Piro Scholar alumni in order to further serve the program’s mission. Carlisha shares, “It’s really not just about getting into college — it’s about persistence, about unlocking their leadership abilites and self advocacy to help them achieve the future they want for themselves.”
