ver the years, the Honor Roll of Investors has served as an invitation to pause in gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon our community. As an educational institution with roots that reach back more than 160 years in San Francisco, we understand that change comes with the territory — sometimes slight, sometimes calamitous, always transformative. Today, as we navigate the realities of living through a global pandemic, we face the challenge of a lifetime. And as this community has done for nearly two centuries, we endure, we subsist, and with the support of our investors, we thrive. Our Holy Founders provide a constant source of inspiration for us all — their fortitude in the face of adversity is what drives us now and always. Looking back over the 2019-20 academic year, we are humbled by this community’s ability to collectively shift and meet the moment. In the fall, our student performers dazzled onstage to a sold-out run of The Crucible, we celebrated a milestone 30 years of the Walkathon, our only student-led fundraiser, and we celebrated our sophomore service-learning program’s 20-year partnership with St. Anthony’s. Then, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to take hold of our global community, our school leadership rose to the occasion, making difficult decisions in an effort to keep our community safe and healthy. Our spring production of Xanadu was able to perform just as the initial shelter-in-place orders were established. Athletics, including the Bruce-Mahoney series, came to a halt. Proms were canceled, prayer services moved online, and graduation was postponed and eventually held over the summer in a socially-distant format. The De Paul Lobby Renovation Project began in fits and starts, and all the while, our passionate educators worked tirelessly every single day to provide meaningful instruction virtually. As this issue of the Honor Roll of Investors approaches publication, our school community is nearly three months into our Distance Learning schedule. Having learned so much during the spring, our virtual classes in the fall have not failed to provide both the consistency and rigor of a Sacred Heart Cathedral education. While there is no doubt that in-person instruction is preferable, we are proud to provide the highest level of instruction and engagement with our students as we face this challenge together. In the meantime, school leaders continue to work around the clock planning and preparing for a safe return to in-person classes, when local and state guidelines allow. It is because of our investors that we were able to celebrate the completion of the De Paul Lobby Renovation Project in October. Those leading the project were both innovative and nimble in altering their original plans to meet the needs of our current reality. As you will read in the pages ahead, the De Paul Lobby will serve as a safe, flexible, collaborative space for our community to gather when in-person instruction resumes. We are endlessly grateful to our supporters for making this project possible. Today, the generosity of investors like you is more important than ever. With the increased cost of supplies, equipment and personnel, and the increased need for financial aid for families facing financial hardship due to the pandemic, your generosity is timely and vital. On behalf of the entire SHC community, we thank you for the many ways in which you support our beloved school. JOSEPH MARCHAND ’57: SERVICE, HUMILITY, LOVE

At Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, we are blessed to receive enormously generous gifts each year from our benefactors — those in our community who are moved by our mission and inspired into action through their support. This fall, SHC received nearly $1 million from the estate of Joseph Marchand ’57, a proud alumnus who, like many of his Sacred Heart High School peers, included his alma mater in his legacy giving. Joseph Marchand grew up in San Francisco and attended St. Brigid School before enrolling at Sacred Heart High School and later at the City College of San Francisco. He was an avid coin and stamp collector and San Francisco Giants Joseph Marchand ’57 fan who loved attending games at Candlestick Park. Before retirement, Joseph enjoyed a 30-year career as a public servant, having worked for the State Compensation Insurance Fund and the California Public Utilities Commission. In his later years, Joseph volunteered at the Castro Senior Center and Francis of Assisi Community Senior Centers, where he would often visit with the center members and served as a caller during bingo events. Joseph’s cousin, Donna Paul, remembers, “He was such a kind and giving person who was always trying to help others.” SHC stands alongside the global community in facing the unprecedented challenges of our current time, and we are blessed — as we have been since our school’s inception — to be strengthened by the support of our investors. Joseph Marchand ’57 joins a long lineage of proud alumni who honor their transformative high school experiences by including SHC in their estate planning. Joseph could never have known the impact his generosity would have today, as SHC feels the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our community.

SHC extends its gratitude to all who made gifts to the Spring Gala, the 30th Annual Walkathon, and #1DayIrish. Event sponsors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events.

While our fundraising events took on a new form in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to successfully raise funds thanks to the resilience, creativity and generosity of SHC’s community of supporters.

Fundraising Events 2019-20

SHC students inspired the entire community by raising a school record of $245,000 at the close of the 30th Annual Walkathon on September 18, 2019. We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2019 Walkathon supported the renovation of the De Paul Lobby, student scholarships, and student travel grants.

SPRING GALA: LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! SHC’s Virtual Spring Gala: Lights! Camera! Action! was held from March 28 to April 3, 2020. Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, our community came together for our first-ever online gala event, raising $203,000! Our premier community-wide fundraiser hosted by the SHC Parents Association helped to raise essential funds for the completion of the De Paul Lobby Renovation Project and to meet the increased need for student scholarships during these challenging times.

#1DAYIRISH #1DayIrish, SHC’s Annual Day of Giving, was a huge success. Held on May 13, 2020, the day was filled with opportunities for community building and celebrating our collective Irish Pride! Virtual reunions were held throughout the day, along with fun throwback videos, messages from our community on social media, and an Ask Me Anything session hosted by Instructor of English Jim Jordan. The event raised nearly $40,000 benefitting student scholarships.

Fundraising events held throughout the year are a wonderful opportunity to create community while raising essential funds for SHC students. 13

BAY SCHOLARS: A PARTNERSHIP IN TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION as a student at Bishop O’Dowd High School, and never took for granted the life-changing opportunities that came from a high-quality Catholic education. Bay Scholars, which Clint and his wife, Janet, founded in 2007, is an expression of their gratitude for the Catholic education Clint received. Providing the same opportunities he received as a high school student to bright, low-income students today, Clint hopes to create a clear pathway to college and a fulfilling, service-oriented life beyond.

ay Scholars, an organization dedicated to supporting promising, low-income students with transformative, four-year scholarships to Catholic college preparatory high schools, has long supported Sacred Heart Cathedral’s mission. Founder Clint Reilly’s own upbringing was the main source of inspiration for the organization, which provides scholarships to students “who shine academically, engage actively in society and demonstrate outstanding promise and a willingness to give back to their communities.” His father, Joe, a Berkeley Farms Creamery milkman and father of 10, understood firsthand the financial requirements needed to provide a Catholic education for his children. Clint himself was a scholarship recipient

SHC Vice President for Advancement & Enrollment John Gumina ’91 describes the Bay Scholars model which relies heavily on relationships created with its beneficiaries, “Bay Scholars do more than simply send a check — they do an excellent job of getting to know the beneficiary schools and each individual scholar — which is incredible, considering they have hundreds of students across many different Bay Area schools.” Scholars regularly report on their experience as they navigate their four high school years, and each year they connect with the organization at annual speaker series events, Bay Scholars sponsored college tours, and an annual benefit luncheon. “Clint and Janet have the ability to build these wonderful relationships with the scholars — at their speaker series events, I’ve witnessed our students walk up to them to give them hugs. Bay Scholars students understand that there are actual people behind their support, and those relationships really help them take ownership over their education,” Gumina says.

ongtime SHC investor John Porras ’57 remembers a divided San Francisco — a city with a population that was international, while neighborhoods were quite segregated. “There were unspoken lines separating people by ethnicity — white people, Black people, Latinos, Italians, Irish people, but there was one place they came together, and that was at Sacred Heart.” John remembers his classmates with such fondness that it has inspired him to give regularly to SHC for years now. “We came to SH from all over the city — boys from different neighborhoods that would never have known each other — and all of the boys were just good.” Along with the foundational support from the Christian Brothers, the camaraderie and what John describes as an innate goodness in the students at Sacred Heart set him up for a life full of personal successes and fulfillment. While he admits that he was not a stand-out student, what he did have was a strong work ethic and the stamina and entrepreneurial spirit it takes to succeed as a business owner. “No matter what you do, you have to do the work — that’s what it takes. And Sacred Heart taught me that. You want it — go out there and hit it.”

After graduation and some time at the San Francisco City College, John visited the local teamster hall and landed a job at a container station as a checker, often working overtime and double time. His willingness to work hard eventually sparked a fire of entrepreneurship. He married and had three children, and eventually invested in real estate. Later, he went on to open Crown Wines & Spirits in Piedmont, a business that is still thriving today. After all these years, John remembers the support he received and the friendships he created at SH. In fact, one of his closest lifelong friends, Stephen Stanich ’57, was a classmate. “Brother Francis, Brother Tony, Brother Raymond, Brother Anthony — all of the brothers were so special, and they were so good to all of us.” John hopes that with his giving he can honor the people that brought such positivity into his life, and that the positivity will continue to ripple out into future generations of the SHC family.

“There were unspoken lines separating people by ethnicity … but there was one place they came together, and that was at Sacred Heart.” Looking back on his time at Sacred Heart, he remembers the pride he had as a San Francisco born-and-raised local. “If you went to Sacred Heart, your parents expected you to be an educated gentleman, and I still feel that going to Sacred Heart was a great honor. It’s a school with so much history. To the kids today, they should know that education is just one piece of what you gain at SHC — it’s the goodness that you carry inside of you that lasts.”
