Our Honor Roll of Investors is published annually by the SHC Office of Advancement in appreciation of our generous benefactors who directly impact the lives of young men and women entrusted to our care. any hands and hearts have worked to create a publication that honors our beloved supporters. The Honor Roll is an invitation to pause in gratitude for the many blessings bestowed upon our Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory school community. The dedication of our founders, the Christian Brothers and the Daughters of Charity, to the spiritual, personal and intellectual growth of our students serves as the ultimate model of generosity for our entire community. We will never be able to fully express our gratitude for the blessings of the Brothers and Daughters, our dedicated parents, alumni, faculty and staff, community partners and financial investors. We are a team! Over the course of the 2017-18 academic year, our incredible parent community raised $1,894,479 through the Parent Pledge Program, and our students rallied together to raise almost $230,000 through the 28th Annual Walkathon. The Chorus Studio renovation started over the summer and is slated for completion by the time of this issue’s publication. Special events held throughout the year, including the Spring Gala and the 41st Annual Irish Invitational, served as festive, community-building opportunities while bringing in significant funds. The Sacred Heart Cathedral community inspired us with its response to our inaugural 1DayIrish campaign which brought in $27,000. Sacred Heart Cathedral remains steadfast in its reputation as one of the most soughtafter Catholic high schools in the Bay Area. Our Inquiry & Innovation Program celebrated its fifth year and sent another cohort of scholars off to college. The Bruce-Mahoney Trophy made it back home after thrilling victories over Saint Ignatius in both football and baseball. A beautiful naming ceremony was held for the Brother Arnold Steward, FSC, Gymnasium, honoring the beloved former Sacred Heart teacher and principal. The brightest students from all over the Bay Area shared their inspiring ideas on activism and entrepreneurship onstage at TEDxYouth@SHC. In May, we bid the Class of 2018 farewell, and in August we welcomed the Class of 2022, one of the largest in our school’s history. It is with much pride that we celebrate this year’s Honor Roll of Investors.

CHORUS STUDIO UPDATE

B Start of the Chorus Studio renovation in June 2018

y the time you read this article, the SHC Chorus Studio Project will have been completed, offering a homebase to hundreds of SHC’s performing arts students. Over the years, the Chorus Studio has served as a miniature theater, a classroom, a lecture hall, and a performing arts practice space. The renovation will completely transform the Studio into a state-of-the-art rehearsal and recording space equipped with outstanding acoustics. The multi-month makeover began this past summer and certainly would not have been possible without the generosity of the project’s lead investors: Claire Spencer, The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation and an anonymous alumni benefactor.

CLAIRE SPENCER Claire Spencer and her late husband, Will Spencer ’65, arguably one of the school’s most ardent supporters, have had a hand in nearly every area of growth at SHC. After Will’s passing in 2013, Claire remained committed to the good

work they began together by continuing to invest in her husband’s alma mater. The Chorus Studio renovation is another in a long list of projects that the Spencers have supported. As an accomplished pianist, giving in the area of performing arts is an natural expression of philanthropy for Claire. In 2017, she was named an SHC Master Artist, a role in which she offers her expertise to students interested in honing their musical talents.

THE CARL GELLERT AND CELIA BERTA GELLERT FOUNDATION Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert believed in hard work and the power of an engaged community—their foundation is a reflection of those values. Today, the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation honors their memory and commitment to the San Francisco Bay Area through grants that support causes in the areas of education, science, literature, religion and social services. The Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation made its first gift to SHC in 1980, and today, after nearly three decades of generous support, the foundation serves as one of the lead investors for the Chorus Studio renovation.

Fundraising Events 2017-18 SHC extends its gratitude to all who donated to the Spring Gala: Havana Nights, the 41st Annual Irish Invitational Golf Tournament & Fightin’ Irish Athletic Dinner, the 28th Annual Walkathon and the 3rd Annual Billy Mac Memorial Golf Tournament. Event donors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events. WALKATHON SHC students inspired the entire community by raising nearly $230,000 at the close of the 28th Annual Walkathon on September 15, 2017! We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2017 Walkathon supported the transformation of our English Classrooms, the Student Launch Initiative, student scholarships and student travel grants. Congratulations to the students on another successful Walkathon! BILLY MAC MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT In its third year, friends and family of Bill McDonagh ’67 hosted 88 golfers at the beautiful Crystal Springs Golf Course on October 2. Later, the golfers were joined by additional friends and family to enjoy a dinner in celebration of Bill. The event raised more than $17,000 in support of Sacred Heart Cathedral scholarships. SPRING GALA More than 450 guests, 100 volunteers, a 13-member steering committee, 644 underwriters, advertisers, auction donors and supporters came together for a wonderful night in support of the students of SHC. The annual Parents Association Spring Gala, our premier community-wide fundraiser, raised more than a quarter of a million dollars to fund classroom renovations, collaborative learning advancements, faculty professional development, student scholarships and more. IRISH INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT & FIGHTIN’ IRISH ATHLETIC DINNER The sold-out 2018 Irish Invitational and Fightin’ Irish Athletics Night took place on a gorgeous June day with 144 golfers playing the prestigious Green Hills Golf and Country Club. After a successful 18 holes, guests enjoyed dinner in support of SHC Athletics and the Daughters of Charity Practice Field Returfing Project. The event raised over $80,000.

A Legacy of Giving

hen Carl Malchow ’79 was a student at Sacred Heart High School, the electric typewriter was the flashiest technology in use at the time, “They were the modern kind—IBM Selectrics!” Today, Carl and his wife, Jenny, have two children at SHC, whose experience on Ellis and Gough looks very different from the days Carl roamed the same halls. While Carl certainly appreciates some of the more cutting-edge advancements to student-life at SHC, there is one innovation that rises above the rest, “Of course, the best change is that SHC is co-ed, so my daughters can attend.” Carl and Jenny’s ties to SHC begin with Jenny’s father, a 1965 alumnus. Now with Finn, currently a junior, Katy, a bright-eyed member of the Class of 2022, and five-year-old Elly on course to join SHC in 10 years, the Malchow family has found a home away from home in our school community. Like many others in his generation, Carl recently took on the important and emotional role of serving as the executor of his late father’s estate. When considering what mattered most to his father, Carl immediately thought of SHC. “My father sent me to SHC with the intention of giving me the best chance at a great life. It meant a lot for him to be able to do that. I know that he would have wanted our family to support SHC for generations to come.” Looking back, it’s easy for Carl to recall the people at Sacred Heart that had a profound effect on his life. “Brother Ellis, Brother Arnold and Mr. Franceschi all made a huge impact on me. These men taught me so many important lessons that I still use today. They shaped the person that I became.” Now that Carl and Jenny are part of the SHC parent community, they see all of the ways philanthropic giving impacts their children’s day-to-day experiences. “Finn loves SHC. He had a great time playing football and always talks about the faculty and staff that he looks up to—especially

Mr. Sazo and Mr. Knapp. Katy just started her freshman year and is having a great experience. She has joined the theater tech crew where she is learning to build the sets for school plays,” Jenny shares. Carl continues, “We have the same hope for Finn and Katy, and Elly in 10 years, that my father had for me—we hope they internalize the spirit of the school, especially the focus on service.” To others who are facing the responsibilities that come with end of life care for a beloved family member, Carl and Jenny share this advice, “If you can, start the conversation early. This is not an easy topic and everyone’s family culture is different when it comes to dealing with loss.”
