The following information highlights giving during the 2016 fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016.

W

ith the start of the new school year well underway, we pause in gratitude to God for another successful year at SHC. In keeping with last year’s theme of stewardship, our wonderful community gave time and resources to sustain the strength and vibrancy of SHC’s mission.

Over the course of the last academic year, our very generous parent community raised more than $1 million through the Parent Pledge Program, and our students raised more than $230,000 to support their classmates in the annual Walkathon. We were blessed to see increased participation and giving across many of our special events, including the 39th Annual Irish Invitational Golf Tournament and Spring Gala: Rio Carnaval. Through continued support of the 2020Vision Campaign, we completed the final phase of the science facilities renovation to provide SHC students with a stateof-the-art learning environment.

SHC students continue to excel in the classroom, onstage, on the field, and as community leaders. In the spring, our students planned and produced the second annual TEDxYouth@SHC event, where the Bay Area’s brightest high school students came together once again to share their experiences, passions and voices. Our Visual & Performing Arts students shared their creative talents in many performances and concerts throughout the year. The Girls Varsity Basketball Team capped an exciting season with a state championship. This summer, we cheered on three SHC alumni who competed in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio. In August, just a few short months after we bid farewell to the Class of 2016, the Class of 2020 joined our community and became part of SHC’s rich history in this great city. Their experiences over the course of the next four years will be enhanced by the generosity of our supporters, just like the thousands of students who came before them, giving life to our motto “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.”

As a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic school with roots that reach more than 160 years into San Francisco’s history, we recognize that all of our successes have been made possible by our exceptional community: the Daughters of Charity, the Christian Brothers, students and their families, alumni, faculty, staff, community partners and financial investors. With each new school year, we are humbled by your commitment to our mission. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

SHC students feel like true scientists in the recently completed science facilities in the La Salle Academic Building.

Science Classroom Completion HERBST FOUNDATION Every summer since 2013, construction crews worked tirelessly to create state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories in the La Salle academic building in time for the subsequent academic year. This summer, the last nails were hammered, the final lighting fixtures installed, years of hard work, and countless contributions from investors came to fruition.

A direct response to the ever-changing landscape of science and technology, the renovation has given classrooms originally built in 1980 more than a much-needed makeover—it has changed the way our teachers instruct and the way our students learn. “It’s great to see our students connect with course material in an environment that supports their curiosity and allows them to work together to seek out the answers to their questions,” shares Instructor of Science Joe Murphy. The improvements include movable furniture for increased collaboration,

floor-to-ceiling writable surfaces, new plumbing for sinks and gas, chemical resistant flooring, chairs and countertops, updated HVAC, and top-of-the-line audio/ visual technology.

Science Department Chair Mona Dunne praises the renovation, “With the new tables, students can easily and simultaneously integrate data collection hardware with their BYO devices. The up-to-date AV, gas, movable lab tables and water fixtures make designing and executing laboratory investigations a breeze. We’re also very pleased with the aesthetic design … students feel like scientists the minute they walk in the rooms.”

Herman and Maurice Herbst arrived in San Francisco at the beginning of the 20th century. Their father co-founded the Herbst Manufacturing Company, a sheet metal and copper works business. As the Herbst family continued to grow roots in the City, they expanded their business into commercial real estate, an area which Herman and Maurice eventually led. The brothers created The Herbst Foundation in 1961, which focused its grantmaking in the fields of education, health, social services and cultural institutions.

Throughout the years, the Herbst Foundation has changed the landscape of SHC—physically and philosophically. The Herbst Library & Information Center, the largest high school library in Northern California, serves as a sanctuary for students to study, research and collaborate. The foundation was also a lead donor for SHC’s Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater, a professional environment in which our Visual & Performing Arts students hone their craft. With

the completion of the science classrooms, the Herbst Foundation’s commitment to education continues to pave the way for future generations at SHC, providing endless opportunities for learning, growth and discovering passions.

GELLERT FOUNDATION In their lifetimes Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert focused their energy and resources on the improvement of their local community.

Carl Gellert rose from humble beginnings to become a successful real estate developer and respected leader in the industry. The Gellerts believed in hard work and the collective strength of an empowered community—their foundation is a reflection of the values that defined them. Today, the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Foundation honors their memory and commitment to the San Francisco Bay Area through grants that support causes in the areas of education, science, literature, religion and social services.

SHC has been the grateful recipient of the Gellert Foundation’s support since 1980. As one of the lead investors of both the Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater and our new science facilities, the Gellert legacy lives on with every performance onstage, every lab experiment, and every student that develops an interest in theatre or science.

WILL SPENCER ’65 When Will passed in 2013, longtime friend John Scudder, Jr. ’73, reflected on his generosity, work ethic and dedication to his alma mater. “As one of SHC’s staunchest supporters, he wanted no recognition. Like the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers, Will served our community with great humility.”

There is hardly an area of SHC’s growth that Will has not touched. Since 1987, the year he made his very first gift to SHC, Will and his wife Claire, along with his mechanical contracting company, F.W. Spencer & Son, Inc., have responded to nearly all of SHC’s calls-to-action in the areas of fundraising and development.

John remembers, “Claire and Will were present at the board retreat years before the theater was built, when we ‘dreamed’ of the day when SHC would have a facility commensurate to the artistic talents of our faculty and students. They were all-in from the very beginning.” Will’s dedication to his alma mater and Claire’s passion for the arts have made them two of SHC’s greatest supporters.

Today, Claire celebrates Will’s life and honors his memory through her continued support of SHC. John reflects, “We know the theater would not have been built without the support of Will and Claire Spencer, and no greater show of Claire’s commitment was when she continued her support of SHC during the science facilities campaign—again a project that would not have been completed without her generosity. We are truly blessed by her love and commitment to the students of SHC.”

This striking environmental graphic creates a fun and interactive experience for science students as they travel to and from classes. The graphic incorporates chemistry principles to encourage a sense of social responsibility while acknowledging the Gellert Foundation for their generous contribution to the science facility renovation.

Heritage Society The Heritage Society honors the vision and generosity of alumni and friends who name SHC as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Giving with Gratitude

“I

’m proud to say I went to SH. My lifelong friends include many of my old classmates and teachers. SH is a big part of who I am, and giving back is my way of saying thank you to all those teachers, administrators, Christian Brothers and coaches,” shares alumnus and investor Mike Paganini ’85.

When Mike was a student at Sacred Heart High School, he played soccer, enjoyed English and history, and cheered on the Fightin’ Irish at all of the football and basketball games. He recalls the cutting-edge technology at the time, “Back then it was overhead projectors and MS DOS. Nothing like today.” Now, as a dedicated investor, Mike’s contributions to SHC over the years make it possible for students today to have access to tools, resources and technology that are hallmarks of an SHC education.

Today, Mike serves as president of Paganini Electric Corporation, a family business founded in 1948. His father, Ken Paganini ’62, began to grow the company in the 1970s, moving away from residential to public and commercial work.

Mike joined the business in the early 1990s and was appointed president in 2000. During his tenure he started Paganini Communications, Inc. and has further expanded the business to focus on larger commercial and service work. Under Mike’s leadership, Paganini Electric Corporation served as part of the core team responsible for the construction of the Coach Andy Pilara ’59 Batting Facility and several other construction projects at SHC.

“Give if you can. Any amount helps, and it is all appreciated by the school. It’s pretty cool to see physical improvements to the campus resulting from alumni giving back.” Mike continues, “I give to SHC because I had a great experience there. I can honestly say that there wasn’t a single teacher, administrator or coach that did not have a role in my development.”

Fundraising Events SHC extends its gratitude to all who donated to the Spring Gala: Rio Carnaval, the Irish Invitational Golf Tournament and the Walkathon. Event donors are acknowledged throughout the Honor Roll, appearing in their respective giving-level categories. We are thrilled to share these exciting highlights from each of the events.

SPRING GALA

More than 400 guests, 100 volunteers, a 10-member steering committee, 360 underwriters, advertisers, auction donors and supporters came together for a wonderful night in support of the students of SHC. The annual Parents Association Spring Gala, our premier community-wide fundraiser, raised more than $228,000 to fund the renovation of our science facilities, equipment for science labs, technology and collaborative learning advancements, school vans, eco-friendly water bottle filling stations and more.

IRISH INVITATIONAL GOLF TOURNAMENT & FIGHTIN' IRISH ATHLETICS NIGHT

The sold-out 2015 Irish Invitational and Fightin’ Irish Athletics Night took place on a gorgeous June day with 144 golfers playing the prestigious Lake Merced Golf Course.

After a successful 18 holes, 215 guests enjoyed dinner in support of the SHC Football and Baseball Programs. The events raised a tournament record $72,000 for off-site athletic facilities and the SHC Football and Baseball Programs!

WALKATHON

SHC students inspired the entire community by raising more than $223,400 at the close of the 26th Annual Walkathon on September 25, 2015! We set an ambitious goal, and with the help of family and friends our students surpassed it. Proceeds from the 2015 Walkathon supported the transformation of the science facilities, student scholarships and student travel grants. Congratulations to the students on another successful Walkathon!

Lifelong Learning at SHC

D

irector of Professional Development and Instructor of Mathematics Janet Shapiro has seen SHC through nearly four decades of growth and change. Janet initially joined our community in 1978 as a math teacher at Cathedral High School, and a mere two years later, she was appointed as dean of students. Shortly after, she became the director of student activities. When Cathedral and Sacred Heart merged in 1987 to form SHC, she began her service as the director of professional development, a role she continues to hold today.

As director of professional development, Shapiro aids in the hiring process for new faculty, collaborates with administration to support professional learning opportunities, and facilitates our new teacher support program which offers an invaluable service to new teachers as they begin their careers at SHC. A lifelong learner, Shapiro understands the importance of ongoing professional learning

for instructors. “We’re constantly learning more about the brain and how it works, so staying up-to-date with the most recent research, and its implications and applications, is critical.”

When faculty members continue to educate themselves in their areas of expertise, our students’ educational experience deepens, ultimately better preparing them to face the world outside of high school. Shapiro shares, “The most significant change over the past five years has been the shift from teaching a subject—math, science, history—to teaching students how to be scientists, mathematicians, and historians.

There is a much greater focus on providing experiences that challenge students to think critically and apply their skills to real-world situations. It’s really an exciting time in education.”

In addition to spearheading professional development at SHC, Shapiro also continues to serve as an instructor of mathematics. “It’s intellectually exciting for me to have to rethink a course that I’ve taught for so

many years, like algebra, and to be a part of a learning team that is rewriting the curriculum to a more inquiry-based, real-world problem solving experience for our students. We want students to understand and see math in the world around them, rather than just being in a math class.”

It’s an undeniable fact: professional learning opportunities at SHC are made possible by the generosity of our dedicated investors.

SHC instructors remain on the forefront of their fields, constantly innovate their teaching methodologies, and bring their knowledge into the classroom for the benefit of our students. Shapiro encourages SHC supporters to experience firsthand the impact of their giving, “Visit our classes and see professional development in action. Talk with teachers about their experiences with professional development—you’ll find that SHC teachers have a passion for continuing to grow and develop as educators.”

“S

ure, no problem at all,” Kevin Buckley ’13 responded with his signature humility and kind spirit after donating the entirety of his first paycheck to SHC. Kevin gave back to his alma mater, a place he continues to hold close to his heart as a rising senior at the University of Oregon. “SHC is, without a doubt, the most loving community I’ve ever known. My experience there taught me that there is good in everyone. I formed so many indissoluble bonds thanks to SHC, and I’m truly forever indebted to that great place.”

As an SHC student Kevin’s voice rang out at athletic events as a public address announcer, over the PA for morning announcements, and he even performed onstage for SHC’s first musical production in the then-brand-new Sister Caroline Collins, DC, Theater, ByeBye Birdie. Today, as he prepares to graduate with a double major in history and religious studies, and a double minor in business and English, Kevin credits his development as a young man to many of his mentors at SHC. “I'm so grateful for the incomparable Dr. Cally Salzman, the world’s best high school counselor. My favorite memories at athletic events always include Sister Frances Meyer, DC, Ms. Karen Fry ’95, Mr. Phil Freed ’80 and Ms. Jo Ann Momono. Mr. Jim Jordan, Mr. Sal Curcio, Ms. Nell Jeffrey, Dr. Ken Hogarty ’66 and Mr. Richard Sansoe ’71 were likewise all instrumental in my development. Ms. Heather McClure and Mr. Chris Green helped inspire

my passion for ASL, and for that I’ll always be grateful. I always loved a chat with our fantastic deans, Ms. Erin Diner Kayser ’93 and Mr. Mario Sazo. These are all relationships I know I can count on for a lifetime.”

Kevin continues to contribute to his communities, and to honor his selflessness and hard work, the University of Oregon filmed a feature on him in February of this year. Reporter Chris Clayton says, “A student on a campus filled with busy students juggling activities and jobs, there might not be anyone more involved than Kevin Buckley.” As a college student, Kevin serves as a public address announcer for South Eugene Basketball and Oregon Hockey, as a sports broadcaster for the university’s radio station, KWBA, and a lecturer at St. Thomas Moore Catholic Newman Center for Catholic students.

Kevin honored his incredible SHC experience with his gift, and he encourages fellow alumni to do the same. “That special community feel is still so strong at SHC, our donations as alumni help provide current students with the best experience possible. I think the majority of SHC alumni realize how lucky we all were to have experienced such a great example of Catholic education, and our donations help advance this amazing institution even further.”
