T
he Honor Roll of Investors is an opportunity to look back at the previous fiscal year and express gratitude for the support we received from you, our committed investors, who believe in the Sacred Heart Cathedral mission to provide the finest education within an inclusive Catholic community of faith. Our Founders, the Daughters of Charity and the Christian Brothers, inspire us to live out our Catholic faith through the mission and our motto, Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve. Our students, in turn, are trained to become service-oriented leaders in the community. Throughout the past year, we celebrated Lasallian Vincentian Catholic education in a number of ways. In Fall 2022, over 1,200 guests gathered at Oracle Park, home to our San Francisco Giants, to celebrate our 170th year. From ballpark banners and billboards to the SHC Band and bobbleheads of Sr. Frances Meyer, DC, and Brother Joseph Fabiano, FSC, we were treated to a night of Irish Pride. Thank you to our sponsors who made the experience a memorable and meaningful celebration for all. Then on a beautiful winter evening, we gathered for the Palace Ball at the Palace Hotel, the very site where the Daughters of Charity answered the call to serve in 1852, followed by the Christian Brothers in 1874. We also announced the Brother Christopher Brady ’70, FSC, Endowed Scholarship Fund, initiated by long-time investors to honor his over 50 years of service and integral leadership in partnership with Sister Joan Gibson, DC, and Brother Philip Clark, FSC, during the 1987 merger of Sacred Heart Cathedral. Truly, the 170th year was unlike any other. The Gellert Foundation, which completed its operations last year, made one final transformative gift to Sacred Heart Cathedral—a $3 million dollar investment providing additional funding for the Carl Gellert and Celia Berta Gellert Endowed Scholarship Fund and the pending renovation project of the Sister Teresa Piro, DC, Student Life Center entryway and atrium. Executive Director of the Foundation, Jack Fitzpatrick, later reflected, “Faith should be a motivating force in our lives to do good for others.” If the past year is a forecast of our future, there has never been a better time for a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic education. SHC students make us proud every day through their humility, hard work and service to others. The student-led 33rd Annual Walkathon raised over $265,000. Their philanthropic efforts were matched at the 45th Annual Irish Golf Invitational. Thanks to our sponsors and supporters, SHC raised a record-breaking amount of over $200,000 at this event. We give thanks for the transformative power of a Sacred Heart Cathedral education, which focuses on faith formation, inclusion and the intellectual and spiritual needs of every student. You serve a vital role in their journey because you invested in their futures—and together, we are blessed to be Sacred Heart Cathedral. Thank you, and please enjoy this year’s Honor Roll of Investors.

UNCONDITIONAL GIVING
S
HC is always on the mind of Kase Abusharkh ’00, even if he’s over a thousand miles away. “I don’t think a day goes by where I don’t think of my years at Sacred Heart Cathedral,” Kase said from his Highland Park (Dallas), Texas home. “I learned to be kind to people, that we’re all one big family. We’re all from different backgrounds, but we share a common thread. If you were at Sacred Heart Cathedral, you were the cream of the crop and really learned how to be good people at SHC,” he said.
While Kase credits SHC and its staff for helping to lay the foundation for his path toward success, he also credits the values and lessons he learned there as his guide to leading a service-oriented life. It is because of this that he wanted to make sure others had access to this experience as well through a fund he started at SHC with his brother Jacob called The Kase and Jacob Abusharkh Family Endowed Scholarship, which is now in its tenth year and provides tuition assistance for students who demonstrate significant financial need, with a preference given to students who are dealing with or have overcome health issues.

Mary Moreno. Janet Castagnola Shapiro. “In a special way, Ms. Shapiro had an impact on me. I’m in business today, and I’m in business for myself and for my family. I had several math classes with Ms. Shapiro, so she was definitely a big part of my education,” Kase said. He put those math skills to immediate use after graduation. Kase, who attended St. Mary's College in Moraga (2000-05), made a choice that would set the stage for his career. “I had to figure out a way to pay for college because I wasn’t working. I had to, essentially, get into real estate.” Kase, then 19 years old, received his real estate license heading into his sophomore year in college. He began buying and selling real estate in Contra Costa County. His success led him to commercial real estate and, along with Jacob, built up a successful brokerage business called The Kase Group, which bought and sold $920 million in real estate in 2022. He continued to thrive in real estate throughout college and beyond. In 2014, Kase passed the day-to-day management of the Kase Group on to

Kase, a first-generation Palestinian American, grew up in Little Hollywood, a small neighborhood on the southeastern edge of San Francisco, nestled between Visitation Valley and Bayview-Hunters Point. His father, Adnan, who immigrated from Palestine in 1978, ran a liquor store that Kase would work in throughout his teenage years. Kase said that his father and mother, Julie, a San Francisco Superior Court clerk, made it a priority that their children had a high-quality education. “From a young age, money was always tight in our household. My mother and father struggled as young parents. My parents wanted the best for their kids, namely the best possible education,” he said. “My parents wanted this more than anything material in their lives and put their children and education first, no matter the sacrifice.”
As he continued to thrive and reach new heights of achievement in real estate, SHC was still on his mind, and he wanted to fulfill his call to be a service-oriented leader for his community. When Kase and Jacob started the scholarship in 2014, they knew they were in a position to help children gain access to the highest-quality Catholic education in the Bay Area. “My brother and I were pretty established. We realized that other people may not be as fortunate,” Kase said. “With our endowment fund at SHC, we can truly see the fabric of these families, of these children that we’ve been able to help in a small way. We've been able to see families be changed forever in a big way. So for me, truly as simple as it is, it’s just seeing the betterment of people's lives, and that does it for me.”
Through their hard work, Kase attended St. Robert’s Middle School in San Bruno, followed by his enrollment at SHC in the fall of 1996. He had many memorable ex-
John Vigo ’81, Director of Stewardship & Future Giving, has known Kase for over a decade and worked closely with him and his brother to establish the family endowment.
“Kase is a highly driven, ambitious young man with a generous spirit and a real desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. There's a saying, ‘Charity begins at home.’ Kase has an extremely tight-knit family, and that's always a real priority in his life–I think it grounds him,” Vigo said. “His family scholarship has helped open doors for deserving students over the past several years, and he's had the opportunity to meet these students at graduation. It's been wonderful to witness.” Kase, who has served on the SHC Board of Regents since 2018, recalls the moment when he first met an SHC student who was a recipient of the scholarship and said, “It was pretty moving, the first student that we helped through Sacred Heart Cathedral. She attended the University of San Francisco and was studying nursing. It was very fulfilling in a very spiritual way.” Kase, who now manages his family's portfolio of assets while pursuing a masters degree in business administration from Brown University, said the school motto will always be with him. “Those words you don’t ever really forget. They always take me back to Sacred Heart Cathedral. We learn to serve and understand the meaning of serving others. The world is a bigger place than just ourselves as an individual. It’s a big world. There are a lot of people that suffer and they need our help. And hopefully, as has been the case with my family, we take that to heart. We’re not perfect, but every day we must try to be the best we can, and serve others where we can,” he said.
SILAS BAHLIBI ’22 FINDING SILAS
S
ometimes, you just have to put yourself out there. Silas Bahlibi ’22 kept to himself when he arrived at Sacred Heart Cathedral as a freshman in Fall 2018. “My parents had to work, so I had to take the bus to get to SHC. I woke up at 6 am and had to get on the bus. I would have to wait two hours until class starts because the bus would get to school at seven o’clock,” Bahlibi said of his commute from South San Francisco. “Frosh year is when you meet new people, so you have to put on your best act and everything–that first year I was tired. I didn’t feel like going out to meet people.” Silas said he felt disconnected from his classmates during that first year because of his schedule; however, when he looks back at it now, the community was always there—he just didn’t “put himself out there.” Silas was born in Nazret, Ethiopia. He moved to Swaziland (now the Kingdom of Eswatini) when he was three. Then his family decided to immigrate to the United States when he was six because they wanted more educational opportunities for their children (Silas has an older brother, Tsegaw ’21, and a younger brother). They spent their first years in San Jose, California, before settling in South San Francisco. He attended Ponderosa Elementary School, followed by St. Veronica Catholic School. Silas and his family received help through a partnership between SHC and Bay Scholars, a nonprofit that connects youth with transformative Bay Area Catholic college prep high schools. Because of this unique connection, Silas received a four-year scholarship to attend SHC, and said,“ Bay Scholars allowed me to go to a school like Sacred Heart Cathedral. I couldn’t have gotten there without them.”
Although he spent his frosh year feeling disconnected, the Inquiry & Innovation Program (i2) helped him on his path toward connection within the SHC Community. i2 is a four-year leadership and enrichment program that challenges students to inquire how their capabilities and passions can serve communities. Through annual projects, field trips, talks, performances and outdoor adventures, students examine and address ideas and issues outside the classroom. Director of the i2 Program, Dabney Standley, met Silas in World History class. He recognized Silas’ potential. “Silas was quiet and kept a low profile, but he had oceans of capability and possibilities ahead of him,” Standley said. “In the four years of i2, we urged him to explore his interests—whatever they were.” Silas began working on numerous projects with i2, including solar-powered refrigeration. While the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted how people communicated with others and built relationships, the opposite happened for Silas during his sophomore and junior years. He said the pandemic was the turning point, as it made him connect with his classmates through Zoom. When social distancing restrictions loosened, he made it a priority to socialize with his classmates. During his senior year, Silas decided to join the football team after spending months with friends working out and staying active in the summer–adding muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame. “I became more fit. I became more of an athlete. I told myself, ‘Why not try out for the football team,’” he said. Silas’ lone year on the football team was impressive. He was a defensive lineman and helped guide the Fightin’ Irish to the CCS Division III and CIF Division 4-A State Championships. The San Francisco Chronicle named him to the All-Metro Football Second Team, and he received the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. While the accomplishments on the field were impressive, the experience of being on a team meant more to (Continued on page 10)

(Continued from page 9)
him. “When I started playing football, I interacted with my teammates. I started meeting guys and girls, just more people in general. I started making more friend groups and putting myself out there. In doing so, I started realizing the beauty of Sacred Heart Cathedral–it is the heart of the city. I became closer to the heart, the school and the community.” Silas was active in the SHC community during his senior year. He was a champion of Walkathon, helped with Admissions events and attended dances and formals. “Senior year was the greatest experience, and when I was leaving SHC, I remember thinking, ‘The four years already went by,’” Silas said. By embracing the school and all it had to offer, Silas learned how the community could help him after high school. The SHC counselors worked with Silas and connected him to resources and opportunities during his college admissions process. They pointed him towards QuestBridge, an organization that connects the nation's brightest students from low-income backgrounds with leading institutions of higher education. His efforts in the classroom led to a scholarship from QuestBridge to the University of Notre Dame. “He is like so many SHC students. He learned how to deploy his many talents. He became a force– someone who can make an impact in whatever area he chooses,” Standley said. Silas is on track to graduate from Notre Dame in 2026. He hopes to have a career in financial advising and wealth management. He is currently interning for Equitable Advisors. “When I left Sacred Heart Cathedral, I left not only as a better person but as a more whole and well-rounded person,” Silas said. “The biggest lesson I learned from SHC is to have a love for people.” Putting yourself out there takes courage, and when Silas decided to do it late in his high school years, a community of support was waiting.

WeekIrish, Sacred Heart Cathedral’s annual week of giving, last year raised vital funds in support of the educational tools we provide to our students, helping them achieve success today, and in the future, as service-oriented leaders.
Throughout the week, SHC investors gave in support of the departments and programs that develop the unique talents and passions of every one of our students. From the Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and Athletics Departments to De Paul Scholar, Piro and Inquiry and Innovation (i2) Programs, the SHC community came together to support the intellectual, academic and holistic advancement of our students within an inclusive Catholic community of faith.

T
he partnership between Sacred Heart Cathedral and San Francisco Toyota began when its owner, John Horton, enrolled his son. Keegan Horton ’13, recalled, “I chose SHC because I wanted to attend school in the city. I was a Marin kid who wanted something different. SHC was the best for me and my personality.” His decision was the beginning of the journey and partnership of giving from the SF Toyota family to Sacred Heart Cathedral’s mission. The Hortons became involved as many proud SHC families do by supporting an event, in this case, the Spring Gala. Over time, the relationship deepened and SF Toyota’s support of student programming grew, too. By 2020, SF Toyota became the lead sponsor of The Irish Invitational, SHC’s golf tournament. Doug Donnellan, Executive Vice President of SF Toyota, is key in the partner relationship. He reported that John Horton has a desire to support the welfare of others through giving, and kids have always been the focus. “We believe we’re helping give kids an opportunity to attend SHC,” he said, “and in talking to the entire SHC team…. SHC does all the right things. We want to be involved with somebody who ties us back to the community—Sacred Heart Cathedral is a good fit.”
Director of Fixed Operations and proud father of Mireya Medina ’25, commented, “When my daughter started going to SHC, I thought it would be a good idea to be connected with the school through volunteering or donating. For me, the relationship started before my kids attended SHC.” The highlight of the partnership occurs every spring at the Sonoma Golf Club. “SF Toyota’s participation is inspiring and the event raises critical funds to support student programs,” President Melinda Lawlor Skrade shared gratefully. Along with sponsoring the tournament, John and his team invite Toyota executives and their families to participate, too. They sponsor a hole-in-one contest where one lucky golfer could win a brand-new Toyota vehicle. Last year’s 45th Annual Irish Invitational raised over $200,000 thanks to the efforts of San Francisco Toyota and generous alumni partners. Additionally, they assisted the school community with branded SHC vehicles nicknamed “The Green Machines” for student outreach, which includes retreats, competitions and off-campus activities. “This is our biggest relationship by far. It’s worked out incredibly well,” Donnellan reflected. “The staff is amazing. Melinda (Skrade), everybody there has been nothing but cordial and wonderful to us.” The relationship that started with Horton enrolling his son has developed into investing in the school’s mission to provide the finest Lasallian Vincentian Catholic high school education in the Bay Area. “It makes so much sense,” Keegan said. “SHC is such an alumni-based school. There is a community of alumni–they know each other. A connection. It makes so much sense that this relationship has developed in the way that it has.”
San Francisco Toyota’s relationship with the school goes beyond charitable giving. What began with one student has grown over the past decade. SF Toyota families transition into SHC families through their involvement in the school community. Paul Medina,
