CONTEMPORARY ART MUSEUM OF OMAHA This design for the Contemporary Art Museum of Omaha is inherently drawn from the place. Located on the outskirts of the Historic Old Market District of downtown Omaha, the context offers many iconic elements to draw from. Smokestack chimneys, canopy overhangs, open alleyways, building pass-throughs, and arched openings are all deployed and reinvented to reflect a modern use. The formal gestures of each of these icons remain intact, but their functional properties are reimagined.

The concept was also drawn from looking at the city at a larger scale and analyzing the urban fabric. Parts of the urban fabric are highly regulated and orthogonal, with intentional intersections and alignments. However, elements of the city break from the orthogonal, notably the nearby Missouri River and the highway system.

The design is arranged similarly, with a predominantly orthogonal stacking system which is broken by a large, overarching curve. As a sequence, the galleries spiral around a central atrium except on the top level where circulation breaks out of the orthogonal and bridges over to the free-form. This bridging condition is created as a response to site, in an effort to preserve the historic structure innate to the place. An open air pass-through highlights this structure, as well as the modern reimagining which stands at its side. The CAMO is intended to be a diverse and provocative organization, and the design reflects that attitude in a reimagination of form.

INNOVATION BUNDLES Team member: Kristina Schneider

Innovation Bundles is an innovation center for emerging fabrication technologies located on the Innovation Campus at UNL. Innovation Bundles is designed to be a place of interaction between professional researchers, university faculty, students, and the community. The creation of integrated research communities converges individuals with varying levels of expertise all exploring a specialized emerging fabrication technology topic.

This integrated approach helps expand innovation through social and academic encounters across user groups. Each research community is equipped with a blend of offices, classrooms, and a variety of flexible collaboration spaces offering unique interactions which help to foster knowledge creation and collaboration.

These research communities are then regionally connected to the central robotics and specialized labs.

The lab space, which acts as the connection between the different research communities as a space of innovation and idea creation, is on display for the public.

Finally, the entire building is connected globally through a series of experiential circulation paths and ramps with program nodes promoting unexpected interactions and boosting creativity. Overall, Innovation Bundles promotes socialization, increases creativity, and fosters knowledge creation through local, regional, and global interactions.

NEW LIFE NICARAGUA MASTER PLAN Design team: Engineering Ministries International Nicaragua

During an internship with Engineering Ministries International located in Managua, Nicaragua, I was on a team of four architects which designed a campus master plan for our clients, New Life Nicaragua. The plan included a community center, orphanage, dining hall, and multiple forms of housing. Within the master plan, I was given responsibility for the schematic design of the orphanage building, which had several complex and competing client needs that needed to be synthesized into one cohesive design. This cross-cultural experience in a multi-lingual work environment offered a hands-on experience with clients and a new perspective on global architecture.

GLOBAL TEXTILES MUSEUM Located between the skyline of Chicago and shore of Lake Michigan along Lake Shore Drive, this site presented a variety of challenges. The area is surrounded on all sides by heavy traffic, the patch of land is arranged in a triangular shape, and the existing park was one of only a few in the densely populated urban area. In response, the roof of the building conserves the sparse greenspace of downtown Chicago by acting as a raised park removed from the chaos of traffic below and offering views to Oak Street Beach. The hybrid building houses a textile museum featuring global artisans and an apartment block of two-story apartments to house the artisans and their families. The goal of the building was to convey the diversity of different cultures while still unifying the community.

BURNOUT This project was conceived for the headquarters of The Nature Conservancy of Nebraska. Located in rural central Nebraska along the Platte River, the TNC utilizes this site for the conservation, education, and research of local ecology. This nature observation shelter is a part of The Nature Conservancy’s education program. As part of the prairie life-cycle, the TNC burns their prairies periodically over the years. This shelter, located in one of those burn areas, takes advantage of this natural process. It begins filled with sticks and twigs, but after a prairie burn leaves openings for focused views, plays of light and shadow, and the opportunity for the prairie to reclaim the structure through infill growth.

HYPERTECTURE: DESIGN FOR EXTREMES Team members: Caitlin Senne & Zhengyuan Zhang

As a response to the COTE 2030 Competition, Hypertecture addresses extremes through architectural design and sustainable strategies. This hyper approach to design results in a multifaceted project that utilizes key features to their utmost, employing adaptable and resilient design moves to cover multiple sustainability measures. The mixed-use community functions are dispersed as anchoring pods within a structural grid.

The remaining grid structure is filled in over time by apartments for low-income families, offering ultimate adaptability for changing needs. Hypertecture means that each sustainable aspect of the architecture is over and above, addressing the changing extremes of our world and the increasing hyper conditions facing our planet in 2030.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE

TRAFFIC IDEAS, NOT HUMANS This project has two main goals related to its title: traffic & ideas. The first goal is to create a place where diverse ideas can foster and grow, and eventually manifest into art.

This place, an open ideas forum, allows advocacy groups to activate their ideas into art pieces and installations to be displayed to the public. The second goal, traffic, relates to the central location in the entertainment district of the Haymarket. Recognizing the power of circulation, the building creates interactions between the public and art along circulation corridors, allowing them to move in, around, through, under and on top of the artful manifestations of the advocacy groups. By trafficking ideas, the public is exposed to new perspectives which alleviate ignorance and spread advocacy for issues such as human trafficking.
