M E RG I N G O F N AT U RAL A ND A RT I F I CI A L CONTEXTUAL ABSTRACT The thesis tries to examine thoroughly the need to conserve places and utilize them as spaces. Which follows the urge to create industrialized landscape subsequently followed with industrialization. Since the need to expand, quarrying was the solution for producing construction and reclamation materials. As a result, natural land is damaged by quarrying. Quarries have caused health problems to local citizens and poor environmental conditions such as air pollution, water contamination and soil infertility, challenging us economically, ecologically and socially. On account of the soil erosion, security risks and degradation of ecosystem, reusing of the abandoned quarries located in the city or the suburbs makes it topic of high importance under sustainable development. If the quarries improved effectively, they can not only repair the ecological network and spatial texture, but also improve the efficiency of land use and value, and activation of the depressed space, at that juncture promoting the healthy and orderly development of society. By finding fine balance between them and utilizing the space to its full potential is very crucial to fine tune the living environment. For protecting the natural landscape, quarries have been gradually closed off and have been designated to recall its former natural state by spreading another layer of ecological system on the top of the site. With the quest to redevelop these areas lies the opportunity to re-imagine the definition of public space and green infrastructure. While there is an agreement being made to restore nature to its former natural state, it cannot utterly be the same. By establishing active community to reclaim, restore and reusing the space for the greater use. Through means of responding to the context we can create an alluring recreational green space for the surrounding community, a place to visit, a place to learn from, and a place to appreciate art and laborer’s hard work. Vision This proposal sees what has been abandoned not as waste, but as an opportunity to redefine the site location in order to create dynamic and engaging spaces and it will have an association and experience based function for the visitor. The vision is to use a series of architectural interventions to respond to site visual character and fill the recreational needs of the community. Through this entwined relationship of architecture and its surrounding landscape the project is able to provide unique amenities that embrace the quarry’s industrial heritage and peoples memory to the space. The project is aspired to accommodate different performance scenarios and to create permeable volumes of spaces that allow fluid movements between architecture and landscape. Creating a vigorous space throughout to relish and celebrate by the people and environment.
