Shawnigan Regatta Beautiful weather and outstanding performances helped make the 57th annual Shawnigan Regatta a great success.

More than 600 rowers converged on West Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park, May 11­13, for the 2018 event.

As one of the last regattas of the competitive season, high school and club crews from across the region were in peak form, racing for seasonal best times and final improvements before the national championships in Ontario in June.

The Headmaster's Farewell Receptions It was so wonderful to see so many alumni come out to say farewell to David and Lynn on their North American Tour farewell tour through San Francisco, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver.

Alumni Updates Tom Osvold '53 (Ripley's)

Alumni Updates Tom Osvold '53 (Ripley's) Starting my second year as the Vice Chairman of the Escondidio Art Council. Our mission is to present various art ideas to the people of the city. We will be looking to establish murals throughout the downtown area as part of a long term project. I also am on the Board for the city municipal gallery and weekly farmers market. I have to make sure the baked goods are up to standard along with anything I can grab that looks tasty, LOL. Rose and I will, again, host a good friend from Uganda, Stella Altel, who now lives in Paris and is a leading African designer who shows in NY and Las Vegas in August for the large African Designers Production event. Last year Stella let Rose do some of her art work on a dress for the show. It sold quickly with requests for a limited run. I'm planning on retiring and putting her to work full time. Ha.

Abbie Vandivere (née Bagley­Young), '97 (Groves) I’ve lived in the Netherlands for the last 13 years and have been working as a Paintings Conservator at the Mauritshuis museum in the Netherlands since 2015. Recently, I had the opportunity to lead a research project involving the technical examination of the Mauritshuis's most beloved painting: Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665). A 2­week examination took place in the museum in front of the public (inside a plexiglass enclosure), and involved an international team of scientists working with high­tech equipment. Our aim was to find out which materials and techniques Vermeer used to paint The Girl. Although it will be months before we have definitive results, the examination received a lot of media attention, including an article in the New York Times and a short BBC Culture documentary.

During the examination, The Girl and I were visited by Don and Lynn Rolston!

They arranged a European trip around coming to see us. Mr. Rolston inspired my interest in the arts more than 20 years ago, so it was an honour to show him our work and pose with him and a 3D print of The Girl. Also, Sue Newns sent me an email to let me know she was following my blog (www.mauritshuis.nl/girlwithablog), and to ask whether I still have the yellow bucket I used to carry my pens at Shawnigan (I do!)

"Legacy Matters" As May is national LEAVE A LEGACY™ month, both in Canada and the USA, I am sharing excerpts from an article, which asks readers to consider a legacy they may wish to leave an organization where a close and enduring association exists. I hope this prompts a family conversation or motivates an over­due meeting with a trusted advisor(s).

Your desire to care for loved­ones is your first order of business, naturally. However, if you have been harbouring thoughts of supporting an arts organization, a worthy cause or an institution that shaped your life, your legacy plans should ensure that your gift maximizes this intention and is not needlessly eroded by taxes. Regrettably at least half of us do not have a plan or a will, which allows our government to plan our legacy for us ­ by means of taxation.

By following Roger Ali's ten point checklist (below) you can have your say in what your legacy will be.

This month is all about legacy giving May is national LEAVE A LEGACY™ month across Canada. LEAVE A LEGACY™ is a national public awareness program designed to encourage Canadians to leave a gift, primarily through their will, to a charity or nonprofit of their choice. ….

We are living in a time when an unprecedented amount of wealth is being transferred from one generation to the next. According to the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, in the next two decades 3.5 million Canadians are expected to die, leaving an estimated $1.5 trillion to their families and community.

A common myth is people think you have to be wealthy to make a legacy gift— this is simply not true. Anyone can arrange to leave a charitable gift from their estate, regardless of its size. It means a great deal to a charity and provides for the future by carrying on the organization’s mission.

Where can you get help?

Your financial planner, lawyer, accountant, or insurance agent can help you leave a gift. You can also call the charity or the non­profit and ask staff who manage the legacy or planned­giving program.

How can you help? The LEAVE A LEGACY™ program lists 10 things you can do today to make a difference: 1. Prepare a will.

2. Leave a gift in your will for the non­profit that makes a difference in your life.

3. Leave a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your assets to a nonprofit.

4. Consider using assets for your legacy gift.

5. Name a nonprofit as a beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF or pension plan.

6. Name your favourite nonprofit as the beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy.

7. Purchase a new life insurance policy naming your favourite nonprofit as the beneficiary.

8. Remember loved ones with memorial gifts.

9. Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to nonprofits in their wills.

10. Ask your financial or estate­planning advisor to include charitable giving as part of your financial plan and to incorporate their counsel to other clients.

By leaving a gift to a charity or nonprofit in your will or estate plan, you ensure your assets continue to help others into the future.
