Ask Yourself As a frugal woman, I do what I can to curb the temptation to spend, but I’ve noticed there are some helpful questions to aid my money-spending decisions: • Do we need this? It’s an obvious question, but also very important. The trick is, if we try hard enough, we can justify almost any “need.” So, maybe reword the question – If I had this today, would I be using it? Don’t buy for “someday,” buy only to fill immediate needs.

• Was I already planning for a purchase like this?

If this item is something you were planning to buy, then you probably need it. If you’re thinking to come up with a reason to need it, you probably don’t.

• Would I buy this if it wasn’t on sale? Sales have a way of invoking the feeling that we must make an unplanned purchase now to save money in the long run. But if you wouldn’t buy that item at full price, you probably don’t need it and aren’t actually saving money, because you’re spending money you wouldn’t if the sale didn’t exist.

• Do we have the money? Again, a deal isn’t a deal if you don’t have the money to spend, particularly if you opt to buy on credit and are loaded with interest. If you don’t have the money, don’t make the purchase.

One further thing I’ve done in the past to encourage reduced spending – every time I was severely tempted to make a purchase, but showed restraint, I added that item to a list to keep track of money I’ve “saved” by not spending in the first place. If you’re really motivated, choose to pay yourself by putting the money you almost spent into savings instead – have fun watching your account grow rather than shrink!

NUTRITION 101 Don’t Wait For New Year’s Resolutions Why do 80 percent of gym members not use their gym? Think about that – 80 percent! Are they not really ready for the commitment? Have they set unrealistic goals for themselves? The first step in your health journey needs to begin with a proper mindset. Knowing where you are in the spectrum of readiness to change a behavior will help you set those goals.

There are 5 stages of readiness – precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The action phase is the best time to make a commitment to a big change like joining a gym. “Most successful self-changes go through the stages three or four times before they make it through the cycle of change without at least one slip” states an article in SMART Recovery Magazine.

Making realistic and achievable goals will help you better succeed in your health journey. If you haven’t been to the gym in years, starting off exercising 7-days-a-week simply will not work. Write out your goals and share them with someone. Sharing your goals will help you stick to your commitment.

Quit drinking pop, stop smoking, and get a gym membership. Change is not easy. Nothing worth doing ever is. YOU, have to decide when it’s time to make a change and there’s no better time than now. In the words of the great Thomas Jefferson, “Never put off ‘til tomorrow what you can do today.”

New Year’s resolutions are grossly overrated and usually fail because they’re based on a random date instead of a prepared readiness to change.

Prepare yourself for your health journey. Surround yourself with people that are encouraging and understanding and find a gym with which you’re comfortable. Your health is the most important thing in your life and life is too short to wait for better health.

What better way to add to better health than to pack your lunch. Below is a yummy recipe to help with just that.

Avocado Egg Salad I have found that I personally feel better when I don’t eat a ton of meat, especially red meat. Eggs are a great way to continue to get protein in a meal. Eggs aren’t just for breakfast anymore. You can serve this egg salad with whole wheat crackers or bread, with cut up cucumbers or carrots or eat it by itself served with a side of fruit.

Ingredients: • • • •

2 hardboiled eggs 2 boiled egg whites 2 avocados, peeled and pitted 1 Tbsp plain nonfat Greek yogurt

• 1 tsp lime juice • 1 tsp Dijon mustard Ground pepper to taste

Directions: Boil 4 eggs, throwing away 2 of the yolks and chop the remaining. Put all ingredients in a bowl with the eggs and mash with a fork.

Makes: 3 servings, ½ cup each Nutritional Information per Serving: Calories: 350 – Total Fat: 27 g – Saturated Fat: 5 g – Cholesterol: 337 mg Sodium: 200 mg – Carbohydrates: 11 g – Fiber: 8 g – Protein: 16.5 g Nutrition 101 Tip: Packing a lunch, versus going out to eat, can help you not just with your health, but with finances, too. No matter how hard you try to eat healthy at fast food places, most likely it is still going to be loaded with salt and ingredients you really don’t want in your body. If you find you don’t have time in the mornings to pack your lunch for the day, just take about 10 minutes to prep the night before and have it ready to grab. Go ahead and pack your snacks while you are at it. Throw in an apple and a yogurt or nuts and you are set for the work day.

Scenic Shawnee: Home, Heart & Harmony Since 2010, teen summer reading program participants have created public art that is displayed permanently in the library. Art pieces include 4 ‘x 6’ painted murals of Shawnee landmarks, children’s and teens’ book characters, carved clay tile murals, and glass tile mosaics.

This year’s project, Scenic Shawnee: Home, Heart and Harmony, is now on display and is made up of 20 paintings of Shawnee landmarks including parks (Veteran’s Memorial, Kidspace, Splash Pad), historic buildings (Santa Fe Depot, Carnegie Library, Ritz Theater), local businesses which had their start in Shawnee (Shawnee Mill, Hamburger King, Sonic), universities (Raley Chapel and St. Benedict’s Benedictine Hall), and more.

“With Shawnee’s rich and colorful history this is a wonderful project that will continue to remind our citizens of the reasons we should have such pride in our community,” said Senator Ron Sharp “Shawnee Junior Service League has truly valued our long partnership with Shawnee Public Library. Our members enjoy and appreciate our volunteer role in serving the literacy needs of our community. This creative mural project was a lot of fun for the teens, as well as for our JSL library volunteers, and it will be enjoyed by many for years to come,” said Kelli Ann Rollins, president, Shawnee Junior Service League “This year’s teen art project reminds us why Shawnee is such a great place to call home. It is fitting that so many historic sites are depicted at a time when many individuals are working on revitalization efforts downtown that will culminate with a new streetscape that will open soon and a new County Historical Museum coming in 2017. As the community’s new logo and tagline states – there are truly great things on the horizon,” said City Manager Justin Erickson “I am thrilled that it turned out so beautifully. The library is honored to be able to permanently display this unique public art mural which captures and preserves so many famous Shawnee landmarks. With the support of local philanthropic organizations and library contributors, the Shawnee Public Library has provided teens the opportunity to connect with their peers and their community through the creation of an amazing public art collection displayed throughout the library,” said Shawnee Library Teen Program Coordinator, Mary Sims.

“Art, for teenagers, is a forum for them to express themselves,” said Lisa Howard, project designer and facilitator.

“They choose the message they want to convey through the medium, the colors, the style, and the subject matter. It gives them a little control and independence.

The library is obviously a great place for teens to get involved with art due to the unlimited resources available.

That’s how I became interested. I read a book in middle school called “The Agony and the Ecstasy” (Irving Stone) about Michelangelo. It fascinated me!

Getting to work with the Shawnee Library and local teens was an inspirational experience. It was a joy to work with Mary Sims, who has a wonderful enthusiasm for her community and art. The library programs, sponsored by businesses and local citizens, are essential for young people.”

United Way Modernizes, Campaign Underway United Way of Pottawatomie County is taking measures to make donating easier as their 2017 campaign. This year’s goal is $465,000 of which funds will be allocated to 19 human services agencies representing healthcare providers,food pantries, and much more.

Their mission is to fight for the “health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community.” Some of those partner agencies include Project Safe, Mission Shawnee, South Central Industries, Salvation Army, Gateway, and Family Promise.

Partner agencies provided UWPC data for a semi-annual report from January to July and the numbers show the need. This summer, 7,500 lunches were served to hungry children and 7,044 meals were served to the homebound. Sixty-two percent of the county population has received critical services. Seventy-five sexual abuse victims were served and 7,584 patients received essential prescriptions. Those in need were served in part thanks to those who give to United Way. Daniel Matthews reported that Community Market of Pottawatomie County Food and Resource Center, which opened this summer, served 1,800 families, of which 1,100 were children. A total of 5,500 individuals were served in just six weeks.

UWPC saw volunteers turn out from various businesses and organizations for Days of Caring which pairs agencies in need with volunteers. First United Bank employees performed clean up at the Salvation Army. Finely and Cook pitched in for a day at Community Market. Members of the United Way board fed clients at South Central Industries. BancFirst helped Family Promise clean out and sort through their donation facility.

Their goal this year is $200,000 less than the previous three years, as donations have declined amidst an economic downturn. Dyer is hopeful.

“Last year we had to cut all agencies by 15 percent of what was initially allocated. We were able to overcome that and give it back to them. When you have other agencies depending on you for their part of their budget, you don’t want them to worry. So, we took a modest approach this year.”

Thanks to their new website, donations are now accepted online.

UWPC has also launched a texting option and soon will have an app for mobile devices. “We’re bringing it up-to-date for the 21st century,” said Dyer.

UWPC relies heavily on donations through employers who set up the donation for their employees. One

MHS Cheer Squad off to Citrus Bowl by: Mindy Ragan Wood

The Meeker Bulldogs’ High School cheer and dance squad qualified this year at Premier Cheer Camps in Kentucky to perform at the annual 2017 Citrus Bowl in Florida on New Year’s Day. This is the squad’s second year to qualify to perform at the All American Halftime Show which will be televised.

To help cover the traveling expenses, they are raising money to pay their own way with a 5k Color Run and Family Festival in Shawnee November 5.

The run starts at 9 a.m. at Heritage Baptist Church.

The certified route run along N. Bryan Street with the turnaround just before Highland Street.

After the run, the fun begins. Events include food and craft vendors, games, a look-a-like and costume dog show, live entertainment on stage such as bands, dance teams, comedians, and a lip sync contest. Ashley Gilbreth, who is coordinating the event, said they will also show a movie using a blow-up pro-

jector screen at dusk. “We are also looking for sponsors. Any (funds) that don’t go toward the race will go to the trip expenses,” said Gilbreth.

At the summer 2015 Premier Cheer Camp, 13 dancers from Meeker attended the camp where 7 were chosen. “The entire squad (12) were chosen to go this year,” said proud coach, Shana Sellers. “Five from last year were invited back.” Ten dancers will attend this year if they can raise enough money to cover trip expenses.

Premier Cheer selects dancers based on their ability to learn new material quickly, their projection or stage presence, and their voice. Competitive dancers often not only train in cheer at their schools but also attend dance studios or work with trainers one-on-one to enhance their skills; however, only one dancer from the Meeker High School squad has dance instruction apart from the school. The girls said they credit their success to their coach, Shana Sellers.

Sophomore Emily Stroup, 16, performed at the 2016 Citrus Bowl and can’t wait to go back. “It was amazing performing in front of that many people.

It’s a huge crowd.”

At the Citrus Bowl training, they have only two or three days at the most to learn the material for the show. Last year, they had just two days to get the routine down. For eight hours a day, the training is grueling. “Drop and get up, jump and get down, running up and down the football field…by the time you get to perform, you’re so sore,” said Stroup.

ESP is the official entertainment producer appointed to coordinate the “Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl All American Halftime Show.” ESP has produced shows for World Cup and Olympic Opening Ceremonies, the Orange Bowl, Outback Bowl, and NFL Monday Night Football among several others.

Star Studded Makeup Artist Jill Tipton Big dreams often begin right here in Pottawatomie county. Ask any child (or for that matter, many adults) what they aspire to be, and you’ll get a broad range of responses: movie star, professional athlete, renowned artist, famous singer. While a majority of those goals may not come to fruition, there are local residents who’ve achieved personal greatness and lived out those Hollywood dreams. Local makeup artist and businesswoman, Jill Tipton, is one of them.

Jill Ramseyer Tipton grew up in Meeker and attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor of arts degree. Her family’s business, Shawnee Floral, has been around for 35 years and has played a big role in her life since childhood. “My mom still owns and operates the shop,” she said.

“I grew up there, so I think that’s why I needed to venture out at some point and do something on my own, but I always knew I’d come back to it.”

And venture out she did. After Jill worked as a Lancome Cosmetics counter manager during college, she went on to receive extensive training from both Lancome and Prescriptives Cosmetics after that, which led her to move to Los Angeles in 1996. “Prescriptives sent me to do the makeup for their scientist and cosmetic development team for commercials and training purposes, for which I am most proud.”

While in L.A., she did freelance work, as well as stints with Saks and Neiman Marcus Beverly Hills. In TV and film, she worked as a makeup

artist. “I did music videos, and Cyndi Lauper was one of my favorites. She was awesome! Renee Zellweger was another favorite; she was so sweet! Her complexion was very fair, so I custom blended her foundation for her. I also loved Doris Roberts. I even customized products for Earth, Wind & Fire.”

In 2006, with her mother ill here in Oklahoma, Jill decided to return home. “My mom was about to open her shop at a new location, so the timing was great. I was ready to get out of the fast-paced California lifestyle, and I missed my family. Oklahoma will always be home. I wanted to settle down, and I met Marty (her husband) within a month. We got married ten months later.” Jill and Marty live in Shawnee and are the proud parents of daughters Bella, eight, and Bristel, seven.

One might think that after 10 years back in Shawnee, Jill’s artistry might be reserved to the floral designs she creates, but that’s far from the case.

Her work has transcended geography, and people seem to find her talents, no matter her locale.

“I do dance recitals, weddings, and theater. It’s amazing how much work is available in Oklahoma. I have a lot of friends in the industry in L.A., and they are always sending work my way.”

This includes Jill’s recent assignment for Evolution Media/Bravo Network, for whom she worked from May to August on a “Real Housewives” type show featuring Oklahomans. “They were just calling it ‘The OKC Project’, because they didn’t have an official

name yet. It should air in early January. The producers are already talking about a second season, so they’re pretty confident it’ll be a hit. The principal characters were very nice and all local, like Nichols Hills residents. It was a neat cast!”

Jill also just completed a project for Jet Pilot Inc. and Vonage. “It’s a 30-second commercial shot, but it took twelve hours to film. It will also air soon.”

Another exciting new adventure in Jill’s life came via a Tulsa job fair for Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman’s, new store in Pawhuska. The Mercantile is set to open October 31, and Jill will be a part of that as well. “I went to give my resume’ for makeup, just in case she ever needed someone for that.

I wasn’t looking for retail work. They put me through the pre-screening, and I met Ree’s best friend Hyacinth, who was very enthusiastic about me

coming to Pawhuska. I agreed to parttime retail, and I think it’ll be a fun opportunity.”

With a busy family and varied work life, one might wonder how Jill keeps it all together. She credits those around her for helping to make it happen. “My family has always supported me in my ventures, and we have wonderful employees that fill in at the shop as needed, so I’m very lucky that allows me to be gone when I need to travel for work.”

While her art background has no doubt contributed to her success, Jill knows that small opportunities can sometimes turn into much bigger things. “For someone just starting out, I’d say start small, like at the local cosmetic counter. Take classes or go to beauty school. My work includes lots of long, 12-hour days, and I stay pretty busy, but I wouldn’t trade it. It’s a blessing to stay busy, I think.”

Historic Pottawatomie County radio station KGFF gets FM channel It was a long time coming, but as of midnight on September 8, 2016, listeners of Pottawatomie County’s oldest radio station can now tune in to an FM signal for a clearer, stereo broadcast of classic rock and local news.

“Good news for listeners in the Shawnee area, KGFF is now on-the-air at 100.9 FM as well as 1450 AM!” said Mike Askins, KGFF Radio general manager.

Askins, who has been on the airwaves since the 1970s, has worked strenuously since December 2015 to get the longtime AM station, owned by Citizen Potawatomi Nation, a signal on the FM band. The station is one of Oklahoma’s oldest, having been broadcasting since 1930.

“KGFF had to find an existing FM translator licensed within 250 miles of our broadcast site,” explained Askins. “Once we found a viable license, we had to purchase it from the previous owner; get FCC approval and hire FCC approved engineering services to calculate what frequencies might be available in our specific location.”

Once that was done, it still wasn’t as easy as flipping a switch to broadcast on both AM and FM. Along with KGFF staff, a contract engineer and an attorney with years of Federal Communications Commission experience, Askins then had to find a translator for sale in their range, a tower site and a frequency that met FCC requirements.

“It was a fairly stressful undertaking, but it finally paid off,” said Askins.

As part of the agreement to secure the license, Askins stated that KGFF must carry the exact programming on both the AM and FM signals.

“What the listener hears on 1450 AM will also be heard on 100.9 FM... the difference being that the FM broadcast will be in stereo.”

For a man who started with KGFF in 1976 as a student reporter, the addition of the FM signal is an exciting turn of events. Askins is a second generation disc jockey in Pottawatomie County. His father came to Oklahoma Baptist University as a student and was on the college radio station there before joining KGFF while teaching speech and English at Shawnee High 16

With an extensive knowledge of the technical and historical aspects surrounding the radio business, Askins said the FM signal is the completion of a longtime focus for the station.

“The big goal has always been to get KGFF an FM signal to regain the quality of coverage lost to interference from so many electronic devices out there as well as the changes in the radio receivers over the years. If you find an old tube type AM radio from the 1940s or 1950s and listen to a properly tuned and processed signal, the quality is amazing. As radios got smaller and cheaper, the quality of materials and workmanship of the receivers for the AM band, perceived as being a talk-radio and sports-only service, got worse. The industry failed to defend the technical standards needed to keep the AM band’s audio quality competitive with FM.” The station’s emphasis on locally-focused broadcasts, including community news and radio broadcasts of Shawnee High School and Oklahoma Baptist University Athletics, remains KGFF’s concentration. In addition to broadcasting at 100.9 FM and 1450 AM, KGFF is also streaming local sports as well as The Mike in the Morning Show on weekdays from 7-9 a.m. and The Daily Stir at 12:45 p.m. on www.kgff.com.

You’ve probably heard the rumors that several places in our community are haunted. So, we decided to do some poking around and find out about these spooky places in and around Pottawatomie County.

Below, are a few of the most famous.

The Pottawatomie County Courthouse Pottawatomie County Sheriff Deputy, Scott Hawkins, caught what appears to be a ghost on the security cameras at the courthouse. A white, luminous figure which looks like a woman is dressed in a long draping garment. The toga-clad goddess is a mystery and no one knows much about her…or him as it might be. The image was captured at night when the courthouse is secured and no one was inside. Courthouse employees say a woman wearing heels has been spotted in the basement. You can see the image on the Shawnee Outlook Facebook page.

The KIRC Radio Building If you don’t believe it, investigate for yourself during the Boo on Bell Ghost Tours for $10. Bring your cell phone or digital camera and be ready to see something creepy….or feel something creepy. Dee Parks, director of Investigating Oklahoma’s Paranormal (IOKP) facilitates the tours. “Someone got scratched down their back at the radio station. A child felt sick,” 18

said Parks. She also reported that people saw a shadow moving back and forth in front of the vault and spotted a man who looked like a janitor with a woman in the basement. “The fourth and fifth floors are very active but the basement is active, too.”

IOKP use devices to read and record paranormal activity, but she encourages guests to take pictures or download an app called “Ghost Radio” which records audio voices not typically heard by the human ear. Park has observed paranormal activity in several downtown buildings including upstairs at the Ritz Theatre, the Travel Shoppe, at Fifth Element, the Old Wishing Well, and a building west of the Depot Museum, just to name a few.

Sacred Heart Mission & Cemetery This hallowed place has a rich history south of Shawnee where Sacred Heart Mission once housed a Catholic monastery and school for Citizen Band Potawatomi children. Construction started in 1877 and the place flourished until a fire tore through the mission in 1901. The fire destroyed the boys school, girls college, monastery, convent, and church. The bakery and log cabin, a cemetery for the priests and sisters are all that remain intact and continue to be cared for. A new church was built in 1914 and is a cherished tourist sight.

ing, and cries have long been observed at night, but during the day it is a peaceful and quiet place. Native American Boy Productions visited the grounds three years ago. Owner of NABP, Mark Williams films paranormal activity on sites with Native history and is a professional documentarian and filmmaker. The only activity recorded was an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) at the boy’s residence building in the

attic. “I want to know your name,” asked one of the film crew. The recording picked up a voice whispering, “Albert,” or “Help.”

The Grisso Mansion The Grisso Mansion in Seminole is one of the most active buildings people mentioned when we made our inquiries into haunted places. Judy Jones, who manages the former home of “Doc Grisso,” gave us a tour.

Completed in 1928, it holds 26 rooms and at 11,000 square feet, is a vast maze of rooms and hallways.

Jones has had several unexplained experiences including hearing children running and giggling in a hall when she was alone in the house. While showing the house for a wedding, she smelled sweet pickles.

“Maggie (Grisso) was famous for her sweet pickles.

We don’t have any in the house.”

An upstairs master bathroom has a heated towel rack which has been disconnected for years. “Twice I’ve gone up and it’s been hot,” said Jones.

Mysteriously several young children who visit the mansion tell their parents about a little boy they met named Micco. He is often caught on camera in the ballroom. “When they (the Grissos) were digging the basement, they found a little Native American boy buried there. We think that’s who it is,” said Jones.

Mark Williams filmed at night and captured a dark shadow seating itself in a chair, Doc Grisso’s fa-

vorite. A lamp next to the chair is known to turn on after it’s turned off. Their recording picked up a voice whispering, “Turn it on.”

Also while at the mansion, a crew member avoided the many mirrors in the house. “He felt really unsettled, and he wouldn’t look in the mirror. He was talking to his wife about it during one of the EVP sessions. Later we listened to the recording and it says, ‘Look in the mirror.’ It reaffirmed what he was sensing,” said Williams.

A caution IOKP Dee Parks strongly cautions the curious from trespassing. At Sacred Heart there is a clear no trespassing sign posted at the mission grounds.

Tours are regularly provided during the day. While some properties without trespassing signs may appear abandoned, Parks said you never know and you should always seek permission before entering.

“We don’t go on properties unless we’re invited and we have written permission,” she said. “That’s why we offer ghost tours so people can enjoy it and it’s legal.”

Family Justice Center Marks One Year One Safe Place Family Justice Center opened last October to serve victims of domestic and sexual violence. The center, located inside the First Christian Church on N. Broadway Street, is a hub for victims to get the help they need to find safety and stability for a secure future.

The goal for the center is to consolidate more than seven stages or steps victims must accomplish to escape an abuser. In order to complete the process, often those seeking these services have transportation barriers, require legal services, treatment programs, and housing. Obtaining those services is difficult and by step three or four, many give up and go back to the abusive environment.

At the FJC, service providers can meet, assess the situation, and create a service plan for not only the victim but the entire family. Project Safe, the Unzner Child Advocacy Center, prosecutors, and local, state and tribal investigators who specialize in domestic and sexual assault can cohesively work to ease the barriers to justice and victim safety.

Although still in the early stages of full services implementation, the center currently provides sexual assault nurse exams (SANE) and a neutral environment where victims can discuss their case with law enforcement and prosecutors.

“We primarily do the medical, law enforcement and advocacy,” said Executive Director, Brittanie Weatherford. “Prosecutors can come here to review the case and see what the victim’s wishes are, if they have any concerns to identify what the next steps are. For example, they may be afraid of their offender and have a no-contact order in place, but not an actual protective order. At that point we would contact Project Safe and do a joint response to get that victim’s protective order paperwork started so the victim doesn’t have to travel all over Shawnee or the county. We assist the victim and operate around them,” she said.

From January 2016 to July, the center processed 33 adult SANE exams. The Unzner Center saw 250 families during the same period. Weatherford said they plan to absorb the Unzner Center as a partner agency, something unique for the FJC. “There are only ten family justice centers (nationally) that are operating with child advocacy centers right now. We want to be number 11. We want to be a strong support for CAC’s.”

Another distinction for the center being evaluated is to provide specialized services for elderly victims of abuse. The center serves everyone regardless of age, but there is no one who specializes in elderly victims.

“Elder abuse is definitely an underserved population that we have identified. They do require a specialized approach and that’s definitely one of the things we’re going to look at,” said Weatherford. “The services we provide are for anyone who needs help, from pediatric to the elderly.”

Their ambitions to offer services like a family justice courtroom and an in-house attorney, make it clear that eventually they will outgrow the office

space at First Christian Church. For now, they are thankful to have a springboard location.

“Pastor Ray Belford at the First Christian Church of Shawnee had attended our community planning meeting last May and knew we were searching for office space in the Shawnee area. When he heard of our situation he invited our planning team to come tour the office space at the church. We toured the space and agreed that we could start our program with the space he had to offer. The Pottawatomie County Commissioners have been very supportive with this program and have assisted us with overhead and operations costs, along with the First Christian Church of Shawnee, Faith Co., Shawnee Rotary Club, and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Our furniture and supplies are primarily donated as new or gently used. It has really been amazing to see the community come together to make this program work. I love how helpful the community members of our service area have been in providing hope and healing to survivors of violence,” said Weatherford.

Speakers are brought in each month to discuss topics such as behavior, emotional trauma, rights within special education, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and other issues the group might have in common. Representatives from various community organizations who offer support for parents come in and explain resources and services they provide.

On the third Tuesday evening of every month, you can walk into Immanuel Baptist Church in Shawnee and find an assemblage of people who share a common bond. They all have hearts that are wrapped around caring for children in need. This diverse group includes couples, single moms, and grandparents who either currently have foster or adoptive children, have had them, or are interested in the possibility. Most of the 30 plus folks in attendance have not seen each other since the last month they gathered.

Others have visited over the phone.

Yet, when they come together they easily share stories before settling in for a smorgasbord of snacks and a facilitated topic of discussion that is relevant to their needs.

The Foster Care and Adoptive Association of Oklahoma began in May of 2015 as a pilot project of Oklahoma Department of Human Resources (DHS) in conjunction with the National Resource Center for Youth Services.

Its purpose is to help insure foster parents have the resources and support they need and to facilitate communication with DHS and other foster parents. Support groups are offered in several locations across the state with plans to begin additional groups soon.

Shawnee’s local group is facilitated by fellow foster parent, Tandi Mize. “It is a blessing to be a part of the positive changes in the child welfare system and to see foster parents leaning on each other for support. This chance to link foster parents with each other,

SHAWNEE HISTORY

Shawnee Builds a Baseball Park Almost since the dust settled after the “run” in 1891 there were baseball parks in Shawnee, some constructed and some just a spot cleared off so young men could play “America’s game.”

By 1902, a five-acre tract on school land was enclosed with a board fence making a ball field at about the same location where Memorial Park is today. In 1928, a stadium was built there that they called Athletic Park, hoping a minor league pro team would move to Shawnee. Those dreams were realized when the Robins, a St. Louis Cardinals farm club, came in 1929 and ’30.

Several sandlot leagues and the high school team used the stadium for the next ten years. In 1937, and again in 1938, major league teams played spring training games at the park featuring Carl Hubbell, Cy Blanton, and Paul and Loyd Waner.

Then the war came and there was no baseball.

Coaches and players were gone into military service. The all-wood stadium had fallen into disrepair so it was torn down and the material donated to the war effort.

When the war was over the boys came home and it was time to get back to baseball. Shawnee needed to rebuild the stadium and citizens also wanted a way to honor the local heroes who had given “all” in the fight for world freedom. Ray LeCrone, longtime coach at SHS, suggested the two projects be combined. What better way to recognize those men than to build a baseball stadium in their honor?

Names for the monument began to be collected, a commission was appointed, an architect drew up plans, and every group and organization in town went to work. A benefit basketball game kicked off the fundraising with players from Hank Iba’s Oklahoma A & M team. Rodeos, dances, boxing matches, and tag sales were promoted. Donations poured in from businesses and individuals and especially

from those who wanted to remember their loved one.

In February 1947, 200 women went to each home in Shawnee asking for donations. After that drive the total reached over $23,000, just $7,000 short of what the commission expected it would take to build the park and monument. At that point the field itself was ready for baseball to be played that spring.

Fundraising continued and before long the sturdy concrete bleachers began to take form. Volunteers donated gravel and use of equipment to make the parking lot. Carpenters and painters erected the fences. Shawnee Garden Clubs worked on beautifying the area. The commission approved the design of a 17 ft. Georgia marble monument. The Shawnee Memorial Co. agreed to install it at no cost. Names of those to be honored from both World War I and World War II would be inscribed on a bronze plaque paid for by the American Legion.

In all, it took Shawnee citizens about four years to completely finish the park and the monument.

Baseball was played there for two summers before the locker room was built, all by volunteer labor from carpenters, electricians, painters, and plumbers. Hundreds of gallons of gasoline was donated for the trucks and equipment, food and drink was brought in for workers, and all the pipe, lumber, posts, wire, fence, and concrete was donated.

Not one dime came from borrowing or bond issues or government programs but from the people of Shawnee. Five years after the first thought of building a Memorial Baseball Park the Hawks, a Brooklyn Dodgers minor league team, made their home here. The park has since hosted the Colt League World Series and the Sunbelt Classic, both featuring prep teams from all over the country.

Even today, thanks to the care of many and to upgrades over the years, Shawnee’s baseball field is recognized as one of the premier parks in the state and is chosen to host state baseball tournaments every spring. And all due to the proud and grateful Shawnee folks who found a personal way to honor their loved ones who didn’t return from war.

Beyond Awareness: Risks, Screenings and What Comes After Breast Cancer Diagnosis by: Dr. Michael E. Confer

What happens if I find a lump in my breast?

“If a woman has a concern about a lump or any other change in her breast, she should seek medical advice,” says Dr. Confer.

When a lump is discovered, Confer other tests are run to determine if it is cancerous. Because many other breast conditions can cause changes to breast tissue a lump does not always mean cancer.

Regardless of the cause, any time you discover a change in your breast tissue – be it lumps, dimples, changes in size or discharge – let your doctor know.

If a lump or other breast tissue change is determined to be cancer, the diagnosis is not a death sentence. Chances of surviving breast cancer are very high and survival rates continue to rise. The survival rate for a woman with Stage 2 breast cancer is 93 percent. A Stage 3 patient’s survival rate is as high as 72 percent. If the cancer is not caught until Stage 4, the survival rate drops to 22 percent.

How is breast cancer treated?

“Each person’s case is different, so treatment plans are individualized,” says Dr. Confer. “Common treatments include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and anti-estrogen hormone therapy.”

Treatment plans are developed considering factors like when the cancer is detected, what type of cancer it is and how aggressively it grows. Because each woman is different, each diagnosis and treatment plan is different. If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, your doctor will work with you to develop a treatment plan that works for your specific needs.

Prevention Prevention and risk reduction methods are the same for all women, participate in routine exercise like brisk walking several times per week, avoid weight gain and obesity, eat a healthy, low fat diet, and minimize alcohol intake. These basic steps are the foundation on which women and men can build a long and healthy life.

Diagnosis According to the American Cancer Society, more than 230,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year. Breast cancer comes with many questions, but with few simple answers: When 28

should a woman get screened for breast cancer? What does a diagnosis really mean? What are common treatment options?

In an effort to go beyond awareness, here are some breast cancer basics.

What is my risk for breast cancer?

All women are at risk of developing breast cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that the chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer in her life is roughly one in eight.

While some risk factors you can’t change – like gender, age, and family history – some lifestyle choices can increase your risk for developing breast cancer. Some contraceptive methods and postmenopausal hormone therapies have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Drinking alcohol and being overweight or obese can also increase your risk of developing breast cancer.

“Certain lifestyle choices can also decrease your risk of developing breast cancer,” says Michael D. Confer, MD, Radiation Oncologist for the Cancer Center at St. Anthony Shawnee Hospital. “Studies suggest that breastfeeding, avoiding tobacco, and regular exercise, even just brisk walking for a few hours each week, can reduce a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.”

More research is being done to find other ways women can decrease their risk.

Once I know my risk, when should I be screened for breast cancer?

By age 20, women should start doing monthly breast self-exams and can expect to have a clinical breast exam done by their doctor each year.

“The risk of breast cancer increases with age and screening needs increase proportional to age,” says Dr. Confer. “Having several family members with breast cancer also increases an individual’s risk of developing it.”

While there is some debate over when annual mammogram screenings should begin, most health organizations recommend annual mammograms starting at age 50. Screening recommendations can vary depending on your risk for breast cancer. If you have questions about your breast cancer screening needs, talk with your doctor.
