Black Friday Deals Lucrative, But Keep Some Perspective Black Friday can be a touchy topic as it is a day dedicated to consumerism encroaching on a time of gratitude, but the good news is, unless you’re after high-end electronics or there’s something else in the Black Friday ad you will be devastated to miss out on, your shopping doesn’t have to look like a wild-eyed frenzy. You don’t even have to stand in line all night long. In fact, the longest line you’ll find yourself in is at the checkout, which can be a hit-or-miss experience.

These days, much of your Black Friday experience can take place from the comfort of your own home. Many stores like Kohl’s will start their sales on their website at some point on Thursday. Amazon will have sales throughout Thursday and Friday, but also keep an eye out for their Cyber Monday deals.

If you’re in-store shopping, the sad truth is many sales start on Thursday, but if you’re adamant about not shopping on your Thanksgiving, there are still plenty of deals if you wait until Friday. In the past number of years, I’ve run the gamut of shopping only online, only going Friday (afternoon, at that) or going out with some family on Thursday and Friday, and I can attest that most deals are often still to be found regardless of which option you choose – though in-store shopping surprisingly tends to be more successful.

Just be sure you’ve looked at the ads ahead of time, so you know what to keep an eye out for. You can by buy a paper or search bfads.net and similar sites.

Remember keep a light-hearted attitude. Saving money is great, but a good attitude is even better. If you miss a sale, there will always be another.

Holidays Are for Family, Not Excuses It is officially that time of year – the holidays!

I absolutely love this time of year, especially since having kids. We just finished up with pumpkin patches and costumes and are now moving on to family get-togethers, baking, fall weather and looking forward to all the Christmas activities to come.

This also brings on a lot of excuses for people. I start hearing, “I don’t have time” or “It is too cold out” or “There is too much good food everywhere I go.” I could easily list 10 more that keep us from staying healthy during the holidays. I feel like the holidays are a time when I really want to stay healthy. It is easier to get sick and run down, and I want my body running optimally so I can enjoy all the activities ahead.

Life is all about balance. No, we can’t indulge until we are sick at every single get-together and then not exercise because “it is too cold out”. That combination is a sure way to end up getting ready for the role of Santa Clause. I recommend posting your goals where you can see them so you are reminded of why you are trying to live a healthier life.

I am all about enjoying life to the fullest – savoring your grandma’s sugar cookie recipe or making pies in the kitchen with your aunts. Those are where memories are made for you and generations to come. Enjoy. Just don’t make yourself just want to lay on the couch all day after a meal.

Squeeze in a quick 30-minute workout where you can – workout video in the morning, sneak away to the gym or an active game with the kids. It all balances out to a healthy holiday season.

All in One Muffin I am always looking for a way to grab something quick in the morning that has all the nutrition I need in it. I grab protein shakes or protein bars often but get tired of the same quick thing.

Occasionally you have those mornings where you can make your family a nice breakfast, but those don’t seem to happen too often. This muffin seemed to be a hit with the whole family, and I could grab a couple on my way out the door with kids in tote.

Ingredients: 1 egg 1 egg white 1/4 cup pure pumpkin puree 1 large banana 1/2 cup almond butter 1/4 cup maple syrup

1 serving non flavored high fiber protein powder 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp salt Dash ground nutmeg

Directions: Spray muffin pan with cooking spray or line with cupcake holders. Place egg, egg white, pumpkin, banana, almond butter and maple syrup all in a blender and mix until completely blended; about 30 seconds. Add in protein powder, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg and blend again until completely smooth. Preheat oven to 350F. Equally divide batter into 12 muffins. Bake for 16 to 18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Most pre-made muffins or muffin mixes are going to be loaded with sugar and lacking fiber, protein or any nutritional value. Spend some time reading your food labels on your protein powder.

My powder gives me 12g of fiber per serving, which helps give these muffins their fiber power.

Warm Drink Stops to Get You Fired Up in Cold Weather

old weather—love it or hate it, the temperatures will be dropping for good before we know it. And while many iced coffee aficionados will stick to their guns throughout the cooler months, it’s time for the rest of us to cut the cold brew and say yes to toasty beverages. From hot chocolate to black coffee to oolong tea, there are countless drinks we enjoy and rely on for that warm, fuzzy feeling as those bracing autumn winds return.

So, what will you turn to as the weather changes?

More importantly, what are your options?

While Elevated Grounds at 3930 N. Kickapoo Ave has recently changed management, they continue to serve coffeehouse favorites as well as a new selection of Asian teas. Their primary offering is milk and bubble tea, but their selection of quality hot teas has expanded as well, including a traditional whisked matcha green tea. For the coffee-lover on the go, Elevated Grounds also has a drive-thru.

Looking for a traditional coffeehouse experience on the south side of town? The Gathering Place offers espresso beverages, excellent coffee, and pastries as well as a meeting space for small groups,

events and classes at their 415 E. Main St. location.

While their traditional offerings are always excellent consider trying a golden milk latte if you feel like something exotic – made with turmeric and other spices, the beverage has a soothing warmth and earthiness. Also, those who frequented the Euphoria Coffee Company trailers once located in the Homeland parking lot on Harrison and more recently near Living Word Church on Kickapoo can find their favorites at The Gathering Place thanks to a new partnership between the two coffee establishments.

As the weather gets colder, however, you might not want to get out of your car. That’s where the drive-thru location, Heavenly Grind, will best accommodate. Heavenly Grind at 1836 N. Kickapoo features many coffee beverages that will warm you up as well as homemade pastries. Plus, their allergybuster tea will get you through colds and days when you’re feeling low.

coffeeshop rebranded itself to not only serve coffee and tea but also to sell men’s gifts like cigars and accessories from its location at 911 E. MacArthur. It makes for a perfect one-stop for holiday presents and toasty beverages.

If you happen to be visiting SSM Health, the aptly named Espresso coffee shop will accommodate you during your stay. While they offer a variety of cold, hot and frozen espresso beverages, they also carry smoothies, Italian sodas and a variety of pastries and snacks. You don’t have to be a patient to enjoy the coffee shop. With free Wi-Fi, it’s a great place for students to get some work done.

Finally, we would be remiss not to mention Starbucks Coffee Company, whose location at 4725 N. Kickapoo has been a Shawnee staple for more than 10 years. Popular with Frappuccino freaks, Starbucks coffee beverages are sweet, creamy and satisfying. Their flagship pumpkin spice latte has already launched; for something a little different, keep an eye out for maple pecan flavor. Coffee purists might even find something to enjoy in the recent release of the more espresso-forward Cordusio.

Library Adds Another Chapter to Food for Fines Holiday Drive

T

hroughout the year, the materials offered by the Pioneer Library System provides its communities with plenty of food for thought.

During the holidays, however, the library provides actual food for those who need it via its Food for Fines program.

The program allows cardholders who have accrued overdue fees throughout the year to have their debts forgiven by donating canned goods and nonperishable items. The items must be in good shape – for example, cans cannot have dents – and must be well within their expiration date. Donors can bring their items to the nearest library location.

The drive takes place for a week during the early part of November, and this year’s event is happening Nov. 4-11.

For each item submitted, the library will waive $1 worth of fines on the cardholder’s account up to $25. The program has been in existence since 2005, and every year the Pioneer Library System and the communities it serves has done its part to help make sure those who need a little extra assistance during the holidays can have a good meal. The library donates the items it receives from cardholders to community organizations like the Salvation Army for use in community meals around this time of year.

Shawnee branch manager and regional coordinator Peggy Cook said she has known members who purposefully put off paying some fines during parts of the year in preparation to donate to Food for Fines.

“I’ve seen really caring people who care about the community save up a few fines for this program, and they do it out of the generosity of their hearts,” Cook said. “I’d like to see our response double from what it was last year.”

The program aims to fulfill the library’s focus to reduce potential barriers for people who might not use library resources for fear of accruing late fees, but it also provides the library and its staff with the ability to give back to the community in ways that matter at a time of year when generosity is a focus.

library materials, the library earlier this year implemented a program that eliminates fines for children and youth materials checked out from its collections, Cook said. The library also raised the limit at which cardholders begin losing some privileges from $10 to $15 this year, and it instituted automatic renewals for items that have no pending holds, have not exceeded the allowed number of renewals or came from one of the automated movie boxes.

“We’re really committed to helping people connect with library materials,” Cook said.

“This is a good time of year where we can express how thankful we are to our customers.”

Of course, residents do not need to have forgotten to return their books and movies on time throughout the year to take part in the Food for Fines drive, Cook said. All donations that match the criteria are welcome and will go

toward the efforts of local community charities.

“It’s very important to me to help make sure that the children and families of the community have a happy holiday season,” Cook said.

Other organizations in the community also take part in the generous holiday spirit. Several departments within the Citizen Potawatomi Nation conduct a “very competitive” food drive of their own. The food gathered goes to help clients of its workforce development and social services programs.

Gina Bundy – employment counselor with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation– has been heading up her group’s food drive for the last six years. She said they will be gathering up enough food for 185 boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas for a total distribution of 370 boxes for both holidays combined.

Over the Fence: The Risk of Being Untrusting

T

All I needed was 10 feet of hose.

When we arrived at our favorite camping destination in Missouri recently, there were only primitive sites available. Reservations there are difficult to obtain, because it is a popular destination in the fall. Fortunately, our favorite campground there happens to be first come first serve. It’s a risky move to pull the camper north with no reservations, but we made the trek anyway.

We woke up very early to arrive as folks were breaking camp to lay claim to a prime site. Sure enough, we snagged a beautiful spot that backed up to the crystal clear, freshwater river we love to fish.

The only problem is it didn’t have access to electric or fresh water for our camper.

This gave us the perfect opportunity to try out our camper’s “boondocking” ability. Functions such as lights and heat could still run off our onboard battery and propane system, and the water system could work as well so long as I could fill the holding tank. So I dragged my water hose across the street to connect to the spigot and fill it up.

That’s when I realized I was ten feet short. I had

fifty feet of hose, but I needed sixty. Ugh. It wasn’t a big deal I guess. However, washing the dishes and brushing your teeth is much easier if the faucet works.

So I went campsite to campsite looking for 10 feet of hose. Most folks were off fishing, so it took a while to find someone to borrow from. Finally, I found a man who had enough hose for me to fill my tank. After filling it up I returned the hose along with some homemade cookies to say thanks. Then I returned to camp.

You might be wondering where this story is going. A man shared something he had to help me out.

What’s the big deal?

It’s not about the 10 feet of hose. It’s about something that was shared without reservation that our neighborhoods are in short supply of these days.

Basic human trust. This man extended a small bit of trust to me in the form of a garden hose, and when I returned the hose, I exhibited trustworthiness.

It’s such a simple act, but it is the building block of neighborly relationships and ultimately of safe and connected communities. However, sometimes trust is broken. Sometimes the hose is not returned, or worse yet, it is stolen. When these things happen, we are inclined to withdraw our trust. The more times trust is

broken, the more likely we are to assume it is hopeless to trust others. That begins the unfortunate downward spiral that leads to fear and isolation.

It’s true our emotional and physical safety are critically important. The funny thing about the pursuit of safety, however, is that we cannot attain it without risk. True safety is not found inside of boarded-up houses and ever-taller privacy fences. It’s not found by lowering our garage doors and shutting out the world. The kind of safety that leads to the world we all want is found in the risky business of human interactions. It’s found in the risky act of extending trust, hopefully to be repaid with trustworthiness. Even when it’s not returned, we must never lose hope that human beings long for goodness to be shown to them.

Undeserved good favor generally inspires us to be good to others. This is a powerful, spiraling process as well. Contagious even. The safety produced from this reactive process has the collective potential to beautifully restore our neighborhoods and create the kind of community that we are each proud to call home.

Go ahead. Share the hose. Extend your trust.

Awarded Sensitive Santa Provides Autism Families with Christmas Magic

The Shawnee Mall won a national award for its Sensitive Santa event, which provides a quiet setting for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to meet Santa Claus. The event will be 9-11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 in the center court of the Shawnee Mall.

he rushing and crushing crowds of the holiday shopping season can take their toll on just about anyone, but this is particularly true for those with family members who are on the autism spectrum.

The sensory concerns that accompany some conditions categorized as Autism Spectrum Disorders make it nearly impossible for some kids no matter the age to participate in some of the Christmas traditions that go along with the holiday, such as getting to sit with Santa Claus at the mall.

That’s why for the last three Christmas season, the Shawnee Mall has hosted its award-winning Sensitive Santa event focusing on families with members who have sensory concerns.

Santa will be providing these special moments this year 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the center court of the Shawnee Mall.

“It just means so much to families that they can do something that other families do right here in their own community,” said Rebecca Fry, co-leader of the Autism Shawnee family support group who also has a son on the spectrum. “I’ve had parents say they’ve never been able to have their child sit with Santa, and they have at this event because they take their time and there’s no pressure and everything is really just wonderful. Mom is crying because ‘we finally got a picture.’”

The event happens prior to the opening of stores on Sunday mornings. Planners silence the music that plays in the mall and lower the lights. Those arriving receive a number to eliminate any complications that standing in line might cause. They also do not require an appointment, which Fry said is important for these families as sometimes schedules

can be hard to predict for kids on the spectrum.

Participants can enjoy a spread of specifically selected treats that consider any dietary concerns, and they can engage in crafting and story time activities. Kids can approach Santa at their own pace or not at all. Everything at the event aims to eliminate any barriers that might keep kids from getting the chance to meet Santa “on their own terms.”

“The Shawnee Mall has gone out of their way to make this fit the needs of each individual child,” Fry said.

Last year, the efforts of marketing director Mindy Mew Palmer and the other event organizers earned the Shawnee Mall national recognition for its efforts in providing this special moment for kids on the autism spectrum. Sensitive Santa received a 2017 silver MAXI award for cause related marketing from the International Council of Shopping Centers, the leading global trade association of its kind. There were nearly 1,000 entries in the category.

“The recognition is nice, because it can show our peers that we’re doing something good and that can hopefully get other people to want to do a similar event, but that’s not the reason we do the event,” Mew Palmer said. “When we see those kids who are six, seven, 20 (years old), and it’s the first time they’re going to meet Santa because they’ve never had an environment to do that where they’re comfortable, that’s why we do the event.”

With a coworker whose child is on the spectrum, Mew Palmer wanted to find a way to help children in the area meet Santa Claus in an environment that made them feel more comfortable. She reached out to Fry to get a handle on the best way to tailor an event to the needs of children on the spectrum.

From the food to the crafts to getting the Shawnee library to provide a quiet story time, the event began to take shape. They enlisted the help of volunteers from throughout the community to make sure families have support they need to make special Christmas memories.

There are other events in the area and around the country, but few carve out a special time outside of traditional business hours to ensure the environment fits the comfort level for kids with sensory concerns, Mew Palmer and Fry said.

In addition to providing magical moments for families, Fry said events like Sensitive Santa also help groups like Autism Shawnee accomplish one of its primary goals of spreading the word and raising awareness about not just the challenges of autism but also the aspects that make people on the spectrum productive members of business and society.

While the event gives kids the chance to meet Santa in an environment meant to put them at ease, Sensitive Santa really hits home for the families and volunteers who participate, Mew Palmer said. It’s one of the reasons they make sure to strategically place tissue boxes around the center of activity during the event.

“It’s always special (for the children), because they do want to see Santa; they really do,” Fry said.

“But I think it’s knowing that the moms and the dads … the look on their face, I can’t put any kind of value on that. It’s very special.”

Deputy Tapped to Clean Up, Investigate County’s Illegal Dumpsites

Deputy Shaun Copelin has cleaned up more than three tons of trash at illegal dumping sites in the county since his July appointment as the department’s environmental crimes investigator.

“I

don’t need Crossfit,” Deputy Shaun Copelin said as he stood in the rain on Crosslin Road near a site with more than 60 tires dumped in a ditch.

The rain constantly trickled on that dreary Friday morning in mid-October as Copelin worked to remove the tires. Two residents who lived nearby stopped to thank him for taking of the problem – one he thought might have only been a few weeks old before the couple told him the tires had been there for years.

The very next day, a citizen called in a complaint about bags of trash alongside both sides of Valley View Road near I-40. The trash had not been there the prior day when Copelin was working to clean up the other site about a mile away.

“The biggest challenge right now is there is just so much,” Copelin said. “As long as people think that it’s victimless crime and it doesn’t really affect anyone, they’re going to keep doing it.”

It’s that mindset along with the dumpsites that led to the establishment of Copelin as the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office’s environmental crimes investigator in July, and since then he has been responsible for the clean-up of more than three tons of trash in the county – and counting.

Copelin came to the department after 28 years in the Air Force, from which he retired as a lieutenant colonel who once flew F-4 and F-15 jets.

Following retirement, Copelin and his wife – also an Air Force veteran who now works as a school teacher – established a home locally near some of his family members.

Copelin still had the itch to serve.

“They drug me out of the military,” he said. “I loved it.”

While filling out paperwork at the county courthouse, Copelin struck up a conversation with a member of the sheriff’s office that eventually led to an application for the academy three years ago.

Since then, the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association named him the 2018 Reserve Deputy of the Year following a 2017 county award for Reserve Deputy of the Year.

The sheriff’s office received a grant from the state for an environmental crimes program – one that the Department of Environmental Quality cites as being active in seven other counties in the state. Copelin knew of the need because of how much trash he saw while on patrol for the last few years.

The work incorporates a lot of the same investigative techniques employed in most policework, though the source from which he draws clues is hardly as glamorous as those portrayed on TV. Copelin digs through the refuse of newly identified sites – or new items thrown on the pile of existing sites – to ascertain the possible identity of those involved. This can take many forms, but if he can find just two identifiers he has legal ground to issue a citation to every adult living at the residence.

After identifying suspects, Copelin will conduct interviews and nine out of 10 times in his experience so far has obtained a confession. He tries to work with those who receive citations by providing them a court date at least 30 days out to give them time to find a way to pay the citation.

He also works with landowners with sites on their property that violate laws requiring any trash be more than 100 yards from the edge of a state or county road. This includes trash out of sight behind a structure. Copelin will hold off writing citations for these property owners if upon return there is a clear, concerted effort to get rid of the trash in violation.

The citations can result in penalties up to $5,000 fine and 30 days in jail if the accused plead not guilty, go to trial, are convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalty, but the point of the program is not to write citations, Copelin said. He wants people to know that Pott County is not the place to come dump their trash, especially since a roughly estimated 40 percent of people that he has contacted have come from outside the county.

Many sites seem to start small, but as word spreads through friends and family, they can grow larger in a short period of time. Some of these places have been used as dumpsites for years.

He has even had some people tell him they only dumped there because they were told it was an official, sanctioned landfill. One of his goals is to catch sites early before they get bigger. There will be resources available soon to help combat the growth of these sites in addition to making sure currently cleaned-up sites do not reappear.

As of mid-October, Copelin has orchestrated the sanitation of about nine smaller sites averaging between half a ton and a ton. Later this month, they plan to clean a large dumpsite on Fishmarket Road with the help of heavy equipment via the county commissioner’s office. He estimates there

to be 100 tons of trash at the site, including furniture like couches, televisions and mattresses. There is also another large dumpsite near Tribbey that they are eyeing at cleaning up by early next year.

The sheriff’s office is looking at expanding resources for the program – like a dedicated pickup truck for Copelin’s use – to increase its impact, and

they have seen an uptick in tips coming from residents as more people learn about Copelin’s efforts. Residents can call in dump locations to the department at (405) 273-1727 or join the Keep Pottawatomie County Clean group easily found through the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

These dumpsites have unseen impacts on the soil and water, which affects not only citizens in the county but those in surrounding areas as well, Copelin said. This is especially true for those who have well water sources.

They also attract unwanted pests like rats and insects that carry disease.

Right now, Copelin said he has been happy his work has a tangible result, and the residents he runs into – like those who stopped and thanked him at the tire dumpsite – can also see that difference and let him know they appreciate his work.

“It’s nice to be able to do things that make people happy in the county,” Copelin said. “That’s what I was searching for when I got out of the military. I wanted to find something that gave me that sense of something bigger than yourself. I feel like what I’m doing matters.”

Former Shawnee-Based Singer Voices Her Opposition to Cyberbullying in New Single

ticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.”

For some, these 13 words couldn’t be further from our truth. Hurtful words and insults can haunt people for a lifetime, leaving wounds that are not visible on the outside but burn just the same. In a world where social media are some people’s wake-up call and bedtime story, they are subjected to larger platforms of scrutiny. This concern is especially alarming for “tweens” and teens.

Cyberbullying is an increasingly serious issue that can happen without recognition. Many kids might be afraid to shed a light on the subject matter out of fear or embarrassment. There are stories of kids who feel unable to voice the pain and suffering they are enduring, which results in irreversible decisions involving harm to themselves or others.

Sahara Rain, a Shawnee native now living in Nashville, was a victim of cyberbullying beginning at the age of 12. She was taunted and tormented through social media platforms relentlessly by those she called her friends at one time.

Children do not come with built-in resilience; therefore, they take the bully’s words and wear them as a blanket of lies about themselves.

“Watching my daughter’s spirit shrink was the most helpless feeling,” Sahara’s father Scott Brown said.

It wasn’t until Sahara’s mom and dad sat her down after recognizing some changes in her spirit that she revealed she was being bullied. Immediate action was taken, and the road to healing began.

A true gift of talent, Sahara turned her traumatic experience in to a poetic song, “Sticks and

Sahara began singing at age 2, and by age 4, she placed in the Top 5 of 16,000 entries on a YouTube contest by singing the national anthem.

In 2015, at the age of 12, the family relocated to Nashville where Sahara caught the attention of Biff Watson. Watson is a prominent session guitarist and Country Music Association board member. When he asked if he could work with Sahara, Brown said the family was honored and beyond proud.

For two and a half years, she wrote and recorded songs until she penned “Sticks and Stones” in a writing session along with Watson and Templeton Thompson.

“It was a moment to remember,” Brown said.

“I knew then she had what it took to move people’s hearts with her music.”

Sitting in the studio for several hours writing a song with seasoned writers, Sahara said, “Stop guys, this is good but it’s just not what I am feeling. Let’s try something like this.”

What came next were some of the lines that framed the core of the song.

Instantly, they knew she was on to something big. In that moment, lyrics to “Sticks and Stones” were born.

“After finishing a rough version of the song, the producer pulled me to the side,” Scott said. “(He said,) ‘I have only seen one other teenager take over a writing session like that, and her name is Taylor Swift.’”

After hearing the final cut, all agreed that this song should be enhanced with a music video, Brown said. Directed by Peter Zavadil – a well-known creator with several CMA Video of the Year awards – a video was recorded at the Nashville Middle School. Brown said Zavadil was delighted to see the impact the song and video would have.

“If we can reach just one child experiencing what Sahara did and let them know they are not alone, it’s all worth it.” Scott said. “This is our public service announcement for the voices that are silenced.”

“Sticks and Stones” comes from the album Sahara recorded in February at Blackbird Studios, which is owned by Martina McBride. The song is more than the beautiful voice that sings it. The flair its bold melody came from and the instruments attached to the words transforms the song into a message. Encompassing the sadness behind its inspiration and the drive that led it to come alive, “Sticks and Stones” is a dispatch from which many can take a lesson.

Local Woman Caught Attention of FDR With Quilting Skills

mma Kickapoo Williams Ellis (Pen-e-thotuck-ah) was full-blood Mexican Kickapoo.

She was born in 1890 on Kickapoo tribal land west of Shawnee, which later became Pottawatomie County in the state of Oklahoma.

Her parents had been born in Mexico. She along with many other native young people went to Pennsylvania to attend the United States Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, where she learned homemaking skills. After a few years working in homes in that area she returned to Pottawatomie County.

She married Owen Lloyd Williams, a native of South Dakota, and they had two children. Maggie was born in 1908 and died at age six. Lloyd Frank was born in 1911.

Beginning in 1908, Rodman Wanamaker – an heir to the Wanamaker family of New York – funded three photo expeditions among the tribes of Native Americans. In 1913 while on his third tour, his photographer captured Emma Kickapoo Williams draped in an American flag. According to later writings she was said to be proud to be known as an American.

Following his expeditions, Wanamaker lectured about his contact with the tribes before most of the pictures were stored away. In 1971, the photos were discovered, and a book was published using Emma Kickapoo Williams’s image on the dust cover.

Emma Kickapoo Williams’s first husband died in 1917, and she later married Frank Ellis, a member of Absentee Shawnee tribe. He was a

contractor, and the family lived 139 S. Osage in Shawnee.

As Franklin D. Roosevelt was making his first campaign for president in 1932, former Shawnee resident Anna Wox Lewis was in town and learned from Emma Kickapoo Williams Ellis that she had made a “Democrat Quilt,” which featured blocks depicting the party’s donkey. The two decided to have Ellis’s picture taken with the quilt to send to Roosevelt accompanied by a note telling him that if he won his party’s presidential nomination she would give him the quilt.

They took a taxi to “Brooks Studio” at 127 N. Bell and had the photo made. Lewis sent the picture with a letter of explanation to Roosevelt in New York. She later admitted she didn’t expect to hear anything regarding the venture, but when the nomination process was over she received an answer. In a communication dated August 1932, Roosevelt explained he found the photo, and “we were all delighted.” The then-governor of New York said he regretted it had been buried in the “mass of congratulatory mail.” It had just come to his attention again, and he was passing it along to the director of publicity.

Lloyd Williams and Lewis packed the “Democrat Quilt” and shipped it to the president as promised. They learned later that newspapers on the East Coast featured the picture of Emma Kickapoo Williams Ellis and her “Democrat Quilt.”

A well-read and well-traveled woman, Emma Kickapoo Williams Ellis died in 1947 and is buried in the Tecumseh cemetery in the family plot.

Two friends met each other on the street one day. One looked unhappy, with tears in his eyes. His friend asked “Why the long face?” The sad fellow said “Let me tell you: three weeks ago my uncle died and left me $40,000.” His friend said “Congratulations.”

“But you see, two weeks ago a cousin I never even knew died and left me $85,000 free and clear.”

His friend said “Wow.” “You don’t understand!” he interrupted, “Last week my great-aunt passed away. I inherited almost a quarter of a million dollars from her.” The reply, “Why are you so sad?”

“This week . . . NOTHING!” There is supposed to be laughter here, lol!

This story sounds a lot like America today.

’Tis the Season of Depression for Some

For many of us, the holidays are a time of joy and happiness. Gathering together with family and friends for food, fun and football.

For some, however, this is not such a joyous time. For some, ‘tis the season of depression, loneliness and sorrow. Between the shorter days, colder weather and the stress and pressure that comes along with the holidays, many people experience changes in their mood that can quickly become depression, and others may even suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which is a seasonal type of depression brought on by the changes in the weather. Either of these conditions can cause a variety of symptoms, such as loss or increase in appetite, irritability, loss of energy, unhappiness and sluggishness.

There are a wide variety of causes of holiday depression and seasonal affective disorder. One of the largest factors is stress related to activities like dealing with crowds while shopping, family gettogethers and budgeting time and money.

Add fatigue to that, and those extra busy schedules can take their toll, leaving us feeling exhausted.

For some, loneliness is a very real issue. While others are stressed over dealing with their families, others may not have families to deal with at all. There might be financial or transportation reasons for those whose family members live great distances apart, which may contribute to the loneliness. There are even others who must face being alone for the holidays due to having friends and family that have passed away, whom they miss greatly particularly around the holiday season.

In addition, many people deal with unrealistic expectations, such as loved ones not being as excited about their gifts as they’d hoped, family not making it to the celebrations they had planned or setting very high expectations and then being dis-

appointed when they aren’t reached.

Finally, there are the reduced hours of sunlight. Reduced hours of sunlight can be a trigger for seasonal affective disorder.

Fortunately, there are ways to battle the symptoms of holiday and seasonal depression.

Keep your expectations realistic; don’t get trapped in thinking that everything has to be perfect and done in a specific way. Is it absolutely necessary that Thanksgiving be held at your house? What about a restaurant? Go to the movies on Christmas.

Lean on your support system a little, those family and friends who are always there for you. A simple phone call can lift your spirits and might just lift theirs too.

Prioritize and don’t sweat the small stuff. Is it necessary to pull out the Christmas plates that are buried in the attic?

Festive paper plates don’t have to be washed and packed back up.

Believe it or not, even with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, volunteering a little of your time can go a long way towards providing you some comfort. Just the simple act of making someone’s holiday season a little brighter can do wonders for your spirits. Try not to worry about things beyond your control. Granted, that’s easier said than done, but try to remember that if you have no control over it then let it go.

Finally, stay within your budget, eat sensibly, avoid alcohol and other substances and don’t forget to give yourself a break. We tend to cut other people some slack but remain extra hard on ourselves.

You deserve a break and some grace just as much as anyone else. Don’t forget selfcare, such as taking time to read a book, watch a movie, soak in a tub or go for a massage can do wonders for how you’re feeling.

Mabee-Gerrer Celebrates Its Unique Place in Oklahoma Arts Scene with Annual Gala

he Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art has an abundance of astounding works of art.

The museum’s permanent collections covers a diverse range of Old World to contemporary artwork. Everything from such artifacts as an Incan bird flute, a terracotta camel figure from the Tang Dynasty and a cradleboard made by the Kiowa tribe to the work of famed Hudson River painter Alfred Thomas Bircher. The museum itself is steeped in rich artistic history as one Oklahoma’s oldest museum and was founded by monk Fr. Gregory Gerrer, who painted the official portrait of Pope Pius X in 1903.

“It is a truly lovely place,” museum charter volunteer Helen Craig said. “It is over-the-top beautiful. There is just so much beautiful artwork, and the building itself is beautiful.

Yet as much as the museum works toward the preservation and education of art, it is also just as passionate about educating children about history and art. The museum has displayed that passion every year for more than three decades with the annual Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art Gala, which funds the museum’s educational programs. This year’s event will take place on Friday, Dec. 7.

“The gala is the biggest fundraiser for the museum,” Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art Director of Development Tonya Ricks said. “The funds raised through the sponsorships, tickets, silent and live auctions, raffle and fund-a-program go toward improving Pottawatomie County and all of Oklahoma through a variety of educational programs from school field trips (which is the largest portion), adult lectures, teacher training, art-based discussions in schools and community programs for aging populations and wellness initiatives, travel troves and more.

“These programs use the museum’s unique collection to teach science, math, language arts and social studies.”.

The gala – which was established by a volunteer group more than 30 years ago – takes place on the first Friday of December. The event has grown considerably over the years from its humble beginnings.

“We cooked all the food ourselves, we brought silver trays and serving trays from our homes for the tables,” said Craig, who is co-publicity chairperson for the gala. “It was very difficult work back then, but it has become such a great tradition for Shawnee.”

That theme will be seen everywhere in decorations – which organizers began making back in August – from dripped candle centerpieces to stained glass windows and hanging banners.

Contributing to the theme will be the mead and wine served during the silent auction.

“I hope this year’s gala will highlight that the museum has been and continues to be independent,” Ricks said. “It is governed by a group of

community members that care about the mission and vision of the museum and work to keep it financially stable and a well-respected art organization in Oklahoma. Our hope is that the supporters and the community come together to fund this mission, while also enjoying a funpacked evening of medieval inspired entertainment.”

The annual event, which this year has 37 sponsors, has become one of the premier fundraising events in all of Shawnee.

“At Christmastime, people like to dress up and come to a fancy party, and there aren’t very many,” Craig said. “Around the holidays, people just feel like doing stuff like this, so there is just people that are always wanting to come to the gala.”

The gala is also an opportunity for residents to take pride in having a museum of this caliber as part of their town.

“There is not another collection nearby that has a history such as the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art or has the quality and diversity of artwork which spans eight millennia,” Ricks said. “The supporters are proud that this is in our small town of Shawnee and want to support how this collection is used to educate Shawnee students and the surrounding towns.” www.shawneeoutlook.com
