Family at the Heart of New Practice Downtown

Physician assistant Jeanie Simpson knows her role as the provider at Classen Family Medicine in downtown Shawnee is not a coincidence.

Simpson moved over three months ago to the new facility located at 432 N. Broadway after 12 years at a family practice in Seminole, and the circumstances that brought her here lined up in a way that left no doubt that she is where she needs to be.

In fact, even becoming a physician assistant was almost a no-doubter. Her journey to becoming a healthcare provider was an example of what happens “when God says this is what you’re going to do.”

“I believe that’s how I got here,” Simpson said.

She graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a biology and chemistry degree that happened to meet the requirements of pre-medicine programs, Simpson said.

With plans to work in marine biology after graduation, Simpson was biding her time helping her folks on their farm in northwestern Oklahoma when her father had a major heart attack that required a long recovery time. Not wanting to leave her family along with hundreds of head of cattle after that, Simpson began reaching out about possible opportunities in-state that would fit with her degree.

A friend in dental school told Simpson about the PA program at the University of Oklahoma, within two weeks, she had taken the necessary graduate tests, completed the application, gathered reference letters, went for an interview and landed in the program in an abnormally short amount of time.

She graduated in December 2005 and immediately went to work for a family practice in Seminole. A Shawnee resident, Simpson commuted every day to treat her patients.

The variety that comes with family practice – with its wide range of ages, disease states and challenges – has driven her during the last 12 years.

“Being in family practice, I loved it because every day was different,” Simpson said. “You never knew what was going to come in despite the fact that you had a schedule to go by.”

One patient visit could result in a cardiac emergency that had them coordinating transport to the nearest facility, Simpson said, and the next could require reminding a diabetic patient how and why to take medicines they had been on for years.

A mother of two, Simpson said she began to feel the distance between her office and home more as her girls became more involved in activities.

“It was really hard being in Seminole and not getting to do some of the things with my kids,” Simpson said.

Once again – as with her entrance into PA school – Simpson found herself in a timely and opportune position. One of the doctors involved in

the Seminole practice left the previous year to join other providers in establishing Classen Family Medicine in Norman. Not long after, they began eyeing a new practice in downtown Shawnee – a location, Simpson said, that could serve the needs of patients not just from Shawnee but also Tecumseh, Bethel Acres, Maud, Earlsboro and beyond.

Her relationship with Dr. Rodney McCrory from their days together in Seminole along with the knowledge and skills she developed during her years of practice made her a fit for the new Classen Family Medicine Shawnee, and the change aligned with her desire to be closer to home.

The transition hasn’t been a totally new experience, however, as many of the patients for whom she was the primary provider in Seminole have followed her to Classen Family Medicine Shawnee, Simpson said. Even her nurse, Crissy Curry, made the move over to Shawnee with her.

Classen Family Medicine Shawnee exists to serve the urgent and continuing care needs of its patients, Simpson said. Whether the care is for conditions that are seasonal like allergies, chronic like diabetes, acute like an insect bite or occupational like required professional physical exams, the services they offer run the alphabet from acne to wound care.

As a provider, Simpson is very thorough with her patients, Curry said.

Her attempts to get to know them and understand their challenges with the goal of fixing the problem where possible is one of the aspects of Simpson’s style of practice that made her nurse want to continue working with her.

The change also made sense for Simpson’s professional goals as well, she said. She can continue building a family practice while also starting and operating a business that offers aesthetic services like injectable and laser treatments.

Though they service urgent care needs as they arise, appointments for routine care are appropriate, Simpson said. Their schedule can get full, so patients get more for their time if they have an appointment instead of waiting as a walk-in patient.

YMCA Site of Summer Day Camp Fun, Meal Program

The end of school means the start of a busy summer for YMCA senior program director Barbara Boise and her camp team.

This year, they will once again conduct an 11-week camp May 29-Aug. 10 at the Troy and Dollie Smith Family YMCA campus at 700 W. Saratoga. Camp kids ages 5-13 can spend the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. focusing on a variety of activities, learning opportunities, field trips and fun centered around a different theme each week.

“Parents are able to pick and choose out of those 11 weeks,” Boise said. “They can pick all summer, they can pick every other week or they can pick whatever weeks that they want care for. They only pay for the weeks that they sign up for.”

Accreditation through the American Camp Association allows for use of the YMCA’s resources like the pool, fields, playground, gymnasium and activity rooms by the participants, Boise said. These facilities make it easy to accomplish physical fitness and activity goals throughout the summer, but planners also mix other educational aspects – such as reading, science projects and arts and crafts – into the program. They try to be sneaky about this as most kids don’t want to know they are learning during their summer break.

“We try to keep them as active as possible,” Boise said.

Besides obvious physical health benefits, research also shows that regular activity – particularly during a time like summer when kids have more time for sedentary pursuits– can also help reduce behavioral issues that crop up from dormancy, Boise said.

Youth development is one of three of the YMCA’s main areas of focus, CEO Brandon Bell said. The team assembled for the camp will often spend as much time with some of the kids as the children spend at home during the summer and can mentor them in any number of different ways that will impact them for the rest of their lives.

In fact, several members of the camp team taking care of the children this summer are former camp members themselves, Boise said, and they know the kind of positive effect it can have on participants.

“During that time, they’re learning to socialize outside of the classroom with other kids,” Bell said. “They can learn lifelong skills … like how to swim. We offer swim lessons for the camp kids while they’re at camp.”

This year will see the return of an Olympics day event featuring competition with kids in summer childcare programs with the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. As of late April, details for the event this year were still in the planning stages, but the format will follow one used more than a decade ago that pitted teams from the two programs against each other in a

variety of games and activities. Kids of all abilities were able to participate in the activities in the past, and the focus was to just get the kids involved and interact with each other.

“We came up with games that made it easy for everyone to participate,” said Donnette Littlehead, director of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Child Development Center. “The closeness of the camps after it was over with was really wonderful.”

For the second year, the YMCA will also provide lunch and an afternoon snack via the Summer Food Service Program, Bell said. This free program is available to anyone under the age of 18 who comes into the Y during the summer and not just camp participants.

In her 20 years of experience running the local YMCA camps, Boise said, she has seen and developed a lot of strategies that ensures each kid has fun from day one.

“A lot of the kids we have are return kids who have been coming here for years,” Boise said. “When we have someone new come in, I try to pair up kids who have been here for several years with new ones, and that’s their buddy.”

National History Day Project Connects Students with Heritage, Talents Kealan Hamilton has captivated the audience with his spoken word and dance performance.

The 13-year-old stands in front of a large crowd dressed in traditional tribal regalia as he explains in immense detail what the underworld water panther on his clothing stands for, the importance of the leggings he is wearing and what the eagle feathers represent to him and the tribes of the Sac and Fox Nation, who were forcibly relocated from the Great Lakes region to the territory of Oklahoma.

Kealan then describes in detail how his ancestors “were tricked and manipulated” by the terms of the Treaty of St. Louis of 1804. He performs a traditional tribal dance before concluding his performance by proudly stating, “I am a descendant of survivors. I have been assimilated but not defeated. I will carry on my way of life in the two worlds I currently reside in to tell my story and to share the story of all indigenous peoples of this conflict. We are living breathing history. We are still here.”

That performance helped the Grove School sev-

enth grader claim top honors at a National History Day project regional competition held at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee. Hamilton won first place in the Junior Individual Performance category and will now take his presentation to the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City for the state competition taking place May 2-3.

“They have told us that his performance is nothing that they have seen before,” Kealan’s mother Dyanni Hamilton-Youngbird said. “He is standing there in clothes of his ancestors, telling his own people’s and his story. He had everybody in tears.”

Kealan’s praised performance would be impressive enough, but it takes on even more significance when you consider that he is autistic.

“He’s not really into many outgoing things or being in groups with other people,” Dyanni said. “It’s not in his nature to put himself out there, but he is doing a wonderful job with this project. We couldn’t be more proud.”

Like many teenagers, Kealan would have much preferred to stay home and play video games, such as retro classics like “Sonic the Hedgehog” or “Super

Mario Brothers” than work on a year-long history project that requires public speaking. Even now after performing his project in front of hundreds, he is still quite reserved in conversation.

Kealan didn’t have a choice this year as the school decided to make the project mandatory.

“Given the choice, students at (this) age won’t push forth with max effort,” Grove teacher Michael Hobbs said. “So by not giving them a choice, they will often times exceed what they could do themselves.”

That institutional nudge turned out to be a catalyst for the journey that Kealan underwent over the next year, Dyanni said.

“He probably wouldn’t have had done this if it wasn’t mandatory,” Dyanni said.

Kealan might have not been thrilled to take on the project, but it didn’t take him long to become fascinated by the subject matter.

“Once we got started and we started looking at pictures, he began to take an interest,” Dyanni said.

“I know my son. He was diagnosed with autism at three years old, and I stayed at home with him. So

I know when something is bothering him. A lot of the research about how the tribes were treated was disturbing, but I didn’t censor anything.”

Kealan said some of the findings he made surprised him because they went far beyond the things had learned in school about that point in history. He immersed himself in the research about the forced relocation of his ancestors, and along the way discovered what his tribal name was Sekîto, which means Thunder That Scared You. “My biggest discovery was finding out what my Indian name was,” Kealan said. “I actually have the same Indian name as (Sauk leader) Black Hawk’s great grandson.”

Kealan’s discoveries about his ancestors’ past have made his father Juaquin Hamilton immensely proud.

“The important part for us personally – and I am speaking for a lot of families – is finding that balance between our cultures,” said Juaquin, who is the ambassador for the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma and also serves as cultural educator for the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks. “You are kind of existing in two worlds as you are raising them up in two cultures.

“This type of project is going to strengthen any foundation,” said Juaquin, whose tribal name is Wîpekwihôkîmâwa. “It installs a confidence in just knowing who you are and where you are from.”

Kealan’s passion for the project has not only impressed his parents, but also his teacher.

“It can’t be measured how proud I am of him,” Hobbs said. “During his sixthgrade year, you couldn’t get him to say two words. Now for him to get up and get in front of crowd – and to see him have so much confidence that he asks his fellow students to watch him – it is amazing.”

The school project has also lit a fire inside of Kealan to learn even more about his ancestors, which has resulted in a trip this month to the tribe’s ancestral home of Saukenuk – built over by the town of Rock Island, Illinois.

“I am very excited … especially to go back to my homeland,” Kealan said.

“That is something special to me.”

Bodewadmi artwork preserved in limited commemorative dishware collection The Cultural Heritage Center’s vast basketry collection inspired the creation of a limited line of commemorative dinnerware pieces available for purchase through the CHC’s gift shop.

“Rather than highlighting one individual, we wanted to highlight the styles and techniques that are really quintessential to Potawatomi people,” said CHC Director Kelli Mosteller. “They represent not just Potawatomi culture but what I think is one of the highlights of our collection here at the Cultural Heritage Center in our basketry. Potawatomi are known for our basketry, whether it be black ash, the quill basketry or some of the more heavily sweetgrass baskets.”

Potawatomi began creating highly decorative containers once markets developed and people had more time to spend on basketry, Mosteller said.

Like many other aspects of Native American culture, Potawatomi woven art is slowly fading away. The U.S. Forest Service reports climate change and an invasive species of insect, the Emerald Ash Borer, threaten black ash trees’ long-term viability. The Potawatomi have used its bark as an artistic medium for hundreds of years.

CPN Graphic Designer Emily Guleresian incorporated traditional Potawatomi imagery into the commemorative dishware. The collection features four pieces that express Potawatomi culture and identity as well as aid preservation efforts.

“I tried my best to represent each of the baskets in the dinnerware without compromising the finished printed product,” Guleresian said.

The serving bowl from this collection features a bear and strawberries.

The original basket was made for a spiritual leader on Walpole Island, Ontario, Canada. His wife, who wanted the design to represent her husband, and specifically the Bear Clan, includes the foods that bears eat. In the case of the basket, strawberries, blueberries and Coho salmon are all depicted.

“What she wanted was (his clan) to be represented on that but also to signify what bears eat,” said Blake Norton, Curator, CPN Cultural Heritage Center. “Unfortunately, while the basket was being made, he passed away.”

The wife stopped by the CHC while visiting relatives in the area.

After seeing the museum, she offered the piece to CPN, he said.

“It’s really the key basket that we have in our relatively large basket collection,” he said. “It’s one of our landmark pieces.

“It speaks to not only the craftsmanship but the things that shaped our craftsmen now and in the past — the things that were around us — the flora and the fauna of the Great Lakes. It is kind of multi-teared in that it is representative of those things, but it’s also representative of what we’ve been very fortunate to slowly acquire here at the Heritage Center in our collection.”

The serving bowl also depicts strawberries, a fruit revered by the Potawatomi.

“It’s the perfect food,” Mosteller said. “It’s referred to as the heart berry because it not only is shaped like a heart, is the color of what we think of as the heart, but it also is a heart medicine.”

She stressed one must eat the entire strawberry, including the greens, to take full advantage of its health benefits.

“Those berries are things that grew wild in the forests of the Great Lakes. They were gifts. We can still honor and remember today to respect the berries, especially the strawberry, and the fact that it’s something passed down from generation to generation through our communities,” Mosteller said.

Pitcher and platters

The pitcher features a red floral design inspired by another basket within the CHC’s collection. The original piece utilized wigwas (birchbark), wishkbemishkos (sweetgrass) and gawey (porcupine quills) in its construction.

“Across the top of the pitcher is a band that represents the quillwork,” Guleresian said. “It was challenging to try to translate the intricate pattern onto a 2-D medium.”

Another single-floral design served as the inspiration for the oval platter.

“To make it unique from the pitcher, I decided to create a repeating pattern with the purple flowers,” Guleserian said. “In order to make them look dimensional, the patterns on all of the baskets are made from small lines of color added together to create the larger shape.”

The black ash strawberry piece featured in the CHC’s third exhibit inspired the design for the square serving platter.

“This was the most difficult pattern to create because the basket is very three-dimensional,” Guleserian said.

Guleserian’s favorite is the pitcher or the bear bowl.

“I think both of those represent the original basket designs well,” Guleserian said. “The pink flower was the most fun to design and the bear one represents the quillwork the best.”

What’s Happening? Here’s Your Update Purchase a “Painted Horse” for your Business:

One of the things that Shawnee has become known for are the dozens of painted horses scattered across town.

Originally a project of former mayor Chuck Mills, the horses were installed as a celebration of the Oklahoma Centennial and remain a favorite with visitors.

Although Visit Shawnee can’t take credit for the original idea, we have become an unofficial “keeper” of the horses as we continue to feature them on our website and printed brochures.

In recent months, we have received several inquiries from local businesses asking where they can get a horse, and in the last year you might have noticed that Regal Car Sales on Harrison and the Shawnee Public Library have both installed new horses.

With the growth that Shawnee has seen in the last 10 years, and the requests for information from businesses on how they can get their own horse, Visit Shawnee has decided to help facilitate a group purchase of new

fiberglass horse sculptures that would ensure a uniformity of the look and size of the horses and would lower project costs by getting bulk rates and group shipping.

We are in the very early planning stages, but we expect that the cost to participate would be between $3,000$5,000. That figure would include the cost of the fiberglass statue, shipping, materials, artist and installation. The exact cost will depend on how many businesses would like to participate.

Visit Shawnee will coordinate all the details and billing. We will require that you work with local artists and all art proposals be approved by us before the horses are painted. In return, Visit Shawnee will include your business and horse in a new brochure about the project and include you in our press and project launch events. Additionally, we will continue to promote the painted horses in our marketing efforts.

The training begins with an interactive game that introduces participants to museums, restaurants and attractions in Shawnee. The rest of the training is dedicated to customer service. It is being familiar with what Shawnee has to offer visitors and being a strong cheerleader for the community.

Fire Department Sponsoring Golf Tourney for Rookie’s Son’s Cancer Bills

In his first year with the Shawnee Fire Department, Mykel Moreno has completed the medical training necessary for first responders to provide relief and care for those in an emergency.

The training, however, did not cover how to respond when his one-year-old son, Marshal, received a cancer diagnosis in mid-February.

“When it’s your own kid, you feel like your mind just shuts down,” Mykel said. “You don’t know what to do.”

As is their nature, the firefighters and personnel of the Shawnee Fire Department and Shawnee Fire Foundation responded to the Morenos’ emergency with action by planning the Miracles for Marshal charity golf tournament May 14 at the Shawnee Country Club. All proceeds will go toward bills associated with Marshal’s treatment and surgeries.

Marshal’s journey began on Feb. 19 after a simple urgent care visit led the Moreno family to the Children’s Hospital at the OU Medical Center, mom Shelbi Moreno said. His abdomen was abnormally hard and large, and six hours later physicians discovered Marshal had hepatoblastoma, a rare cancer affecting the liver of children from infancy to about three years old.

He began his first round of chemotherapy almost immediately due to the nature of the tumor, Shelbi said. He spent five weeks in the hospital not only dealing with cancer but several respiratory and other infections.

To this point, Marshal has responded remarkably well according to what the doctors have told the Morenos. Initially, it seemed almost certain he would need a transplant, but going into his fourth round of chemotherapy at the end of April the tumor had shrunk to a size that made it removable and significantly reduced the need for a risky transplant.

“At first, they gave us a five percent chance that

he would not have to have a transplant,” Shelbi said.

“And now we’re 95 percent sure he doesn’t have to have it.”

To this point, the only side effects Marshal has experienced is nausea and hair loss, said Shelbi, who stays full-time at home with Marshal. His demeanor has remained nearly unshakable, which has made a distressing experience a little easier for his parents.

Though fire department rookies can have a notoriously tough first year on the job, Mykel’s colleagues have responded to his circumstances with the kind of fervor and compassion reserved for

those whom they serve. In addition to working with his schedule to allow Mykel to be there for his wife and son, members of the fire department looked for other ways to help.

That’s when Lt. Chip Sheppard contacted Justin Payne, who had experience planning golf tournaments for organizations like the Ben Strong Foundation. Among all the requests from organizations, families or friends to put together a tournament for someone in need, an employer reaching out about sponsoring one was something new.

“That’s never happened,” said Payne, who has been friends with Sheppard since they were kids. “I knew that if it was something he was asking, then it needed to happen. When I dug into it and realized what it was for, I was all on board.”

The tournament will be a four-man scramble format with teams assembling for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. May 14, and Payne said he would like to see enough teams participate from the community that Mykel and the fire department serve to necessitate two starts that day. Registration is $80 per person, and there will be prizes for contests like longest drive and closest to the hole. These efforts by members of the department and other individuals and organizations already have made a difficult situation somewhat easier, Shelbi said, and she has been amazed at how much they have helped.

“They’ve done more for us than we could ever imagine,” Mykel said. “There are no words to express our thanks.”

Groups, Volunteers Host Walkout Day Camps for Students

On April 2 and the two weeks following, hundreds of Oklahoma teachers, administrators, students and concerned parents from school districts throughout the state descended upon the capitol building in Oklahoma City.

These peaceful protestors packed the halls of the capitol to advocate for funding for their schools and for better wages for their teachers. In the weeks preceding the teacher walkout, the Oklahoma Education Association had warned the legislature that the walkout would be coming.

For working parents, however, the walkout presented some difficulties. Many would have to make some sort of arrangements for daytime childcare during the unexpected break in the school year.

Seeing the needs that these school closings would create, Necoe Bandy and Cindi Draper – Immanuel Baptist Church’s children’s ministry directors – began planning and coordinating what would end up becoming a day camp during the walkout.

“We knew that there would be kids who would need food,” Draper said, “That led to the realization there would be kids who would need childcare while parents work, and since we had the resources available, we decided we could hold a day camp.”

Bandy and Draper sought to partner with local organizations to provide a safe environment where parents could leave their children to play, eat and learn during what would normally be their school day. Immanuel Baptist was able to combine its efforts with Community Market, Frontline Church and Mission Shawnee to accomplish this.

Mission Shawnee opened its facilities to host the day camp, Community Market provided several meals and Immanuel Baptist prepared meals while also providing supplies and other materials. Many members from Frontline and Immanuel Baptist volunteered their time and energy, and they would be joined by several students and athletes from Oklahoma Baptist University to help serve and watch the children. With all of these elements in place, the day camp was ready.

Necoe Bandy – along with fellow Immanuel Baptist Church children’s ministry director Cindi Draper – partnered with individuals and organizations in the community to host a day camp to provide meals, activities and lessons for students during the two-week teacher walkout in April.

Beginning at 8 a.m. April 2, about 20 students were dropped off at Mission Shawnee’s facilities, where they were served breakfast. Afterward, students split into groups and then would rotate between various activities, including arts and crafts, music, Bible stories, physical activities and various STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – activities. Students took a break for lunch before continuing their rotations.

The camp dismissed at 3 p.m. when the students normally got out of school for the day, and the process resumed every day over the course of the following two weeks as the number of students tripled to around 60 children by the end of the walkout.

Throughout the duration of the two-week long day camp, despite being physically draining, Bandy,

Draper and the rest of the volunteers remained encouraged and motivated seeing that they were not only meeting physical needs but also spiritual needs of students. They were able to bring in a children’s evangelist to teach the children biblical lessons and a band to teach and sing songs with the kids.

Another encouragement was seeing the older kids helping to keep the younger children busy and entertained.

“The older kids were able to help them build marble runs, shoot hoops with them and make crafts,” Draper said. “They enabled us to be able to do the behind-the-scenes work that needed to be done.”

The older students’ willingness to help their younger counterparts ensured that the volunteers could use their time keeping the camp properly functioning.

Students from several different Shawnee schools like Will Rogers Elementary, Grove School and Sequoyah Elementary were able to make new friends with kids who attended a different school than they did during the rest of the year. In doing this, the day camp brought the youngest members of the community somewhat closer together and could result – to some degree – in a stronger city.

“The biggest takeaway was that we were thankful that we could help our community by making a positive impact on the kids, and that parents would know that their kids were safe,” Draper said.

Several students wanted to know if there would be another day camp in the near future.

Overall, the day camp seemed well-received and appreciated by the community – and some of the teachers specifically, Bandy said.

“We had some teachers who had their children in the day camp.” Bandy said. “Once they saw what we were doing, they were able to go and participate in the walkout as well.”

The day camp provided an example of a service provided by local organizations whose people stood with teachers as they advocated for their students at the capitol.
