Celebrate the Little Things As a frugal-minded person, one of my goals is to enjoy the simple things in life – creating memories in little ways. Because dropping money on big endeavors is not the only way to create lasting family memories. One of my favorite ways to simply cherish the little things is to find the silly enjoyment of “minor” holidays - I choose to watch for the Groundhog, dress up on Valentine’s Day, and wear green for St. Patrick’s Day. If you’re looking to create silly traditions for your family, or just to put a little more fun on your calendar, consider giving in to the frivolity of these “lesser” days - just for fun. Here are some ideas: • Wear green – of course! Obviously, dig out the most green you can find from your closet, but if you have kids, or are simply young at heart, consider making a hat from green construction paper, or white paper colored green – it’s not about fancy, it’s about fun.

• Eat green foods – My kids love being served green eggs and green milk on March 17. If you like to bake, bake green sugar cookies, or dye your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe. Use this as a reason to make others smile and deliver your goodies to neighbors or friends – because no one expects St. Patrick’s Day gifts!

• Throw a party – Pin the Shamrock on the leprechaun, host a treasure hunt, paint rainbows. If you have small kids, they’ll love this!

• Learn about Irish Culture, or the real St. Patrick - Use this is a learning experience. Borrow books from the library or perform an internet search to learn more about Ireland, its food and its history.

Nutrition 101 Lucky in Health With St. Patrick’s Day coming soon, you might think a little “luck” might help you meet those goals you set a couple of months ago. But, the truth is, it’s not luck that’s going to help you meet your goals; it’s hard work, perseverance, and faith. So, forget about luck, hit the gym and keep working on those goals. But remember, they don’t happen overnight. Maybe you’ve had some setbacks. We all do. It’s okay. But don’t give up and don’t wait until another January to begin again. Your fitness goals are not some pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. They are real and attainable. When clients tell me about their setbacks, I remind them, two steps forward and one step back is still progress.

If you’re like me, you love springtime. The days are getting longer and warmer and we begin to think of things we can do outside again with our family and friends. If you continue working toward your goals, all those outdoor activities will be even better. You’ll feel better about yourself inside and out. Keep in mind to measure your progress—literally. Use a tape measure because you can tell much more about your health from inches lost rather than a scale measuring your weight. During exercise, you should be building lean muscle. Muscle takes up less room than fat so a scale only tells part of the story.

If you’ve had some setbacks in your fitness journey this year, you may be making excuses for them. Try writing down those excuses and think of things you can do to overcome them. Remind yourself why you have fitness goals and redouble your efforts to achieve them. Avoid the green beer on St. Patrick’s Day and replace it with the green recipe below.

Roasted Asparagus What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with green veggies? Your health won’t need luck when feeding your body good veggies like asparagus.

Ingredients: 1 bunch of asparagus 3 tablespoons of olive oil

1 tsp Garlic powder 1 tsp Onion powder ½ tsp Black pepper

Directions: Preheat oven to 425°F. Chop and discard the white, hard ends off the ends of the asparagus and place on a cookie sheet. Drizzle oil over the asparagus and then sprinkle seasonings on top. Toss to evenly coat the asparagus with oil and seasonings. Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes depending on thickness.

A few reasons include vitamin K and folate both which can help with anemia and blood coagulation.

Regular intake of asparagus helps to reduce the cholesterol levels naturally. Asparagus is also a natural medicine when it comes to relieving constipation. The antioxidants in asparagus are good for the eyes, fighting off cataract, and fighting off the problem of inflammation. The antiinflammatory property of asparagus helps alleviate the problems of arthritis and rheumatism. Many times, when clients complain about their joints, the first thing we talk about is their diet. Who needs luck now with this recipe?

Take a Closer Look

I

love to study trends and statistics. I enjoy census reports, published studies, longrange investigative journalism articles, and of course Ted Talks. Data always demands we ask why and I’ve always been a “why” person. I never really outgrew the “why” stage as a kid, and as it turns out that curiosity is an important quirk for journalists. Many, if not most, stories begin with the question why and end with finding the answers.

So, here are some statistics that hit close to home. According to a US census bureau report, evaluated between 2011-2015, the poverty rate in Pottawatomie County is 18.2 percent. Children under 18 living in households with public assistance accounted for 33.9 percent. The census bureau showed in 2010 the median household income was $41,332 but, the per capita income was just $20,700.

There are so many why(s) that we can ask here.

Why is the poverty rate so high, why are nearly 40 percent of children in need of public assistance, and why is the per capita and median incomes so low?

An even more important question I want to ask our community is, why should we care?

With the rise in collaborative efforts among groups like We Care, Neighboring 101, and other human service organizations, we believe our community truly cares about who we are and the issues we face.

In the next six issues, we will be exploring the why behind poverty. We have chosen to conduct

this series in partnership with Neighboring 101, an organization who is successfully working with individuals who choose to improve their lives.

We will also speak with other human service organizations who work hand-in-hand with the same mission. You can expect to hear from a variety of people who work closely with this demographic to get to the heart of the issues.

At almost every turn, from local and national news to social media, we are inundated with statistics and sadly, oversimplifications and onesided perspectives. To truly understand a matter, it demands both taking a closer look and stepping back to see the whole picture.

We are a community of diverse individuals with many differences, but the one thing we have in common is that we’re in this community together. Together, we must solve problems and that demands we attempt to understand it as much as possible. We can look at statistics all day long, but it isn’t until we get close to the data that we understand the why behind it. If we can answer why a trend exists, that’s when solutions can be explored.

Take a journey with me into the lives of people who have chosen to trust us with a glimpse of their world. Their stories will not only educate us, but instruct us toward the path of bettering our community.

Owning Poverty: Photography Exhibiting Resilience

The Shawnee Public Library will host a unique photography exhibit in March representing people who have personal experiences with poverty. The project directed by two Oklahoma Baptist University students will be interactive with the subjects of the photos present to tell their personal stories of resilience in the midst of poverty.

OBU students Maddie Roach and Katie Ward were both enrolled in a Human Rights course in the fall of 2015 when their professor Timothy McCollum realized that the two had similar interests in creating social change in the lives of those who live in poverty. He suggested that the two meet and collaborate on a project together utilizing resources from organizations that address poverty in the Shawnee area.

“Being in poverty is not necessarily linked to an income, but rather to the extent to which people go without,” Roach stated. “Poverty is not having resources such as computers or an internet connection for people to find jobs or for children to complete school homework. It can include the lack of a physical address for a person to put on a job application, a phone for an employer to call to make contact, or the absence of healthy food in one’s diet.”

The first step in the project was to create a goal for the exhibit. The two decided that they wanted to humanize the statistics for poverty and to provide an avenue for people with experiences in poverty to share their personal stories of resilience. They chose to call the participants coauthors and wanted to allow them to show photographs depicting what they find important in their lives, thus giving them ownership of the process. >

Next, the two began contacting organizations in Shawnee such as Family Promise, Mission Shawnee, Neighboring 101, the Community Market, and Community Renewal to ask for recommendations of clients who might be interested in participating in the exhibit. They chose to work with agencies that had relationships with the subjects in order to gain the trust of those who would be sharing their stories.

In order to enhance the relationship factor in the assignment, each of the coauthors of the exhibit was assigned an OBU student photographer who worked with them to photograph what was important to each of the coauthors. The coauthors and photographers were brought together to meet each other and to learn guidelines for the project. They also engaged in open dialog about storytelling and making the stories their own.

“We did not want this undertaking to just be a quick afternoon project with three to five photographs,” stated Roach. “We wanted a holistic approach where the coauthors are allowed to tell their experiences with poverty and how it affected the personal narrative of their lives.”

Each of the teams of coauthors and photographers were provided a list of questions to guide their individual journeys together. The questions included: What is your daily routine? How do you spend your time? What would you like people to un-

derstand regarding your experience with poverty?

In conjunction with the opening of the exhibit, the Shawnee Public Library is hosting a panel discussion on poverty. This panel will include representatives from area organizations that work with those in need. Karen Bays, the director of the library, commented, “I am excited to bring together different organizations that have been successfully addressing the poverty issue in Shawnee to see what we have already done and to look at where we need to go.”

moved to the OBU campus where Roach and Ward plan to have more of a student emphasis for the display. “Our hope for the OBU exhibit is to show resources in the Shawnee community where students might like to connect and volunteer,” stated Ward.

“This gives OBU students an opportunity to give back to the community where they are living for the four years of their education.”

The exhibit will open in the community room of the Shawnee Public Library on March 23 at 6 p.m., with the panel discussion following at 7 p.m. The exhibit will remain in the library through March 26.

Patricia’s Story: The Justice Gap Patricia Steele started life in the kind of home that experts say would eventually make her a tragic statistic in society. Although her journey to getting ahead in life started well after childhood, Steele is emerging from poverty and beating the odds.

Raised in an abusive home from which she was removed at a young age, Steele’s early life was chaos. As a teenager, she found a foster family for whom she credits a loving environment. However, addiction had been part of her early family culture, and she continued to abuse drugs and alcohol into adulthood.

Last year, she heard about the Neighboring 101 opportunity, a community support program that helps people rise above poverty. The philosophy defines poverty as being deficient in several areas like social relationships, coping skills, financial awareness, and employment to name a few.

Participants work with curriculum and mentors to inventory their deficiencies and set goals to improve their lives.

“I never thought I could get out of poverty,” she said. “I found out if you get some things right in your life, you can move forward in your life.”

An impediment that kept Steele from moving forward was a felony record. Struggling to get by and make ends meet, she got desperate. She sold $30 worth of marijuana to an undercover officer. She received a 10-year deferred sentence, but the record was a sentence for life because it precluded her from almost any employment.

“I was in home health care. Because of the felony, I can’t do that. I can’t even go to school to work in a cafeteria; I can’t work in a nursing home because of my charge. It wouldn’t matter how many classes I took, how many diplomas I got, I wouldn’t be able to work.

You need money for an attorney to expunge a record. It’s a vicious cycle,” said Steele.

Tina Pollard, N101 volunteer and consumer lending manager at CPN Community Development Corps, called this the “justice gap.” Pollard is one of several community leaders who has worked with Steele.

“I would like for our society to look for ways to enhance our rehabilitation programs for legal, addiction, and mental health, to ensure we’re not breeding bigger problems. Once someone has paid their debt to society, they should not continue to pay for a lifetime. Once someone comes home from prison, that should be the end of their legal trouble,” said Pollard.

February 2016, Governor Mary Fallin issued an executive order to “ban the box,” which eliminates the declaration of a felony record on job applications. It does not prevent an employer from asking about a felony record. “The ability to gain employment is a critical and necessary component in reducing recidivism and for those individuals to lead productive and successful lives,” said Fallin last year.

It isn’t just finding a job, but keep-

ing it, that is a challenge. For many who grow up in the poverty culture, they do not learn coping skills such as how to resolve conflict or how to think ahead beyond the immediate crisis.

“I had no coping skills at all,” said Steele, referring to her emotions. “It wasn’t until this class that I learned what to do.”

Steele said she was confronted with a co-worker who was sexually harassing her at work. “Normally what I would have done was start yelling and (physically) defend myself,” she said. “But I learned in class, that wasn’t going to work. With my record, who would they believe? I needed to report it to my boss and I did.”

Steele kept her job and the employee, she said, was later fired. Today she has a better job. She moved out of her garage apartment and lives in a large

house, something that she couldn’t have imagined before N101. She is working to complete her education and will begin a second phase of the program on finances. Steele also volunteers at Community Market, a food resource center.

Pollard said that N101 has changed her life as well because she realized poverty is not limited to income. “My poverty wasn’t financial; mine was a lack of emotional control, social capital, and nearly all the resources taught in class. As I read how these resources are interconnected, I began a journey that has changed my life,” she said.

She said Patricia taught her something too. “I learned to look for similarities instead of differences, because similarities connect us and differences separate us. Patricia and I have agreed that if we met in a different setting, we likely would never have spoken to each other. This program gave us common ground and taught us both that we are alike in more ways than we are different,” said Pollard.

While she credits several mentors with her success, Steele said she had a closer connection with Pollard. “Tina’s willing to help you, no matter what.

She doesn’t care anything about your social class. I feel more blessed knowing her than if I hadn’t.”

Steele regularly speaks to students in N101. “If you really use this stuff, it works. I’ve bettered myself,” she said.

Her son and his fiancé are enrolled in the next session, breaking a cycle of poverty in her family.

Capps honored at Kate Barnard Awards Tribal Vice-Chairman Linda Capps has been recognized in many fashions while serving others as a school teacher, adult education instructor, businesswoman, and as the representative of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s second highest executive office. The vice-chairman was recognized in February for how her outstanding public service has benefitted Oklahoma women and families as she was named as one of two recipients of the 2017 Kate Barnard Awards.

“Needless to say I was very surprised to learn I was being honored for such a meaningful award,” said Vice-Chairman Capps. “I’m thankful for the commission and their work, and I’m very pleased to have even been considered.”

The Kate Barnard Awards have been given by the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women annually since 1998 to honor outstanding women in public service whose leadership has benefitted Oklahoma women and families. Nominees are from the ranks of elected or appointed salaried public officials in Oklahoma.

In 1907, Kate Barnard, a native of Oklahoma, became the first woman to win a statewide elected office in the United States as Commissioner of Charities and Corrections. She was a key figure in the enactment of a compulsory education law providing for state payments to widows dependent on their children’s earnings, of legislation implementing the constitutional ban on child labor and of laws aimed at unsafe working conditions.

Alongside the vice-chairman, Oklahoma County Commissioner for District 1, Willa Johnson, was also recognized for her service in multiple national and statewide organizations.

From 1976-1984, Capps worked as a high school business teacher and Indian Education director at Dover Public Schools and Tecumseh Public Schools respectively. From 1987-1997 she served as a government-contracting specialist with the Oklahoma Bid Assistance 16

Since 1998 she has worked full time at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in conjunction with her duties as vice-chairman, having been an elected official at the Nation since 1987.

tion Board for Seminole State College, Gordon Cooper Technology Center Foundation and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Community Development Advisory Council. She has been active in community and civic organizations in the Tecumseh and Shawnee area for years and is a current member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank & Trust of Shawnee.

She is also a past Tecumseh, Oklahoma Citizen of the Year, a member of the Gordon Cooper Technology Center Hall of Fame, 2016 AARP Oklahoma Indian Elders awardee and 2016 Gordon Richards, Sr. Public Service Award winner. However, she said the 1997 Small Business Administration’s Oklahoma Minority Advocate of the Year award is her most prized honor.

All About the Dress: Kiara Foster Wins with Wool Kiara Foster has been getting a lot of attention for her skills as a seamstress. She has just returned from the National Make it with Wool annual sewing competition held in Denver, Colorado. The event is sponsored by the American Sheep Industry and American Sheep Women.

Of all Foster’s completed designs, she knew which one she wanted to enter. One dress in particular had been the winning ticket in five state 4H competitions. The impressive “little black dress,” appears, at first glance, to be a business suit with jacket. When the jacket comes off, the lace reveals both the versatile elegance of her design and the work Foster invested in the project.

Only one applicant for each age category is allowed to participate in the National Make it with Wool event. Foster competed as a 17-year-old junior from Earlsboro High School and competed alongside young women from 38 states. While she did not place in the top ten, the honor of qualifying was an experience of a lifetime for Foster.

She learned how to sew from her grandmother Faye Stone, since the “time she could sit on my lap,” said Stone, who also owns Heritage Embroidery. Stone is head over the 4H sewing program.

Foster has been an avid 4H member since she was 9 and is Vice President of the Pottawatomie County 4H club.

Foster crafted the dress as part of her work with sheep and wool. She raises and shows sheep in addition to sewing. Making a dress a success isn’t as easy as it looks. Foster said while different competition judge based on different factors, she believes the reasons for the dress’ popularity is the detail and the work involved. The jacket was especially challenging.

“There were five or six pieces put together in the jacket, three linings and the lace on the dress unexpected. The lace came with the pattern, but we had to make a lot of alterations to make it work. The zipper was frustrating to hide.”

Foster modeled the dress for judges on a runway while answering questions, something that came easily as speeches are routine in 4H competitions. They wanted to know where her inspiration comes from. “I look at things from the 80’s and some from the 90’s. I see something and if I like it, I make it my own.”

er states, Foster enjoyed learning from others at the competition. “I saw so many things up there that I never would have thought of doing,” she said.

Some spun their own wool and crocheted or knitted from it for their dresses at competition.

She also found that many of the winners crafted their own patterns.

“I’ve learned how to use a drop spinner. I have learned to knit and crochet but,” she laughed, “I’m not very good at it.”

Crochet and knitting aside, Foster’s talents haven’t gone unnoticed by OSU. Because of her success in 4H, she has won enough scholarships to pay for her first year of college anywhere she wants to go, but OSU is courting her for both their Ag Communications and Fabric and Fashion Design programs.

“I am more interested in Ag Communications, the financial side. There are a lot of different jobs in that field. I also want to go to Texas UTI for a diesel mechanic degree so I can have my tractors and my diesel truck and if anything happens, I have the knowledge to fix them,” said Foster.

No matter where the needle and thread take Foster, sewing is something she enjoys. “I like that it’s kind of a lost art. I like learning different things about it and I still have a lot to learn. It’s just the feeling of accomplishing something that I can wear,” she said.

Foster hopes to qualify for the National Make it with Wool competition next year. She is in the process of designing her own patterns and intends to enter in three categories.

Fur Traders of Pott Co. As workers carefully uncover decades of facades on buildings lining East Main Street they are also uncovering curiosities of the early days in Shawnee.

On the south side of the 300 block old signs were found hidden below layers of wood and metal. It was immediately obvious the sign had been on the building for many years. Observers were soon speculating how long it had been since Shawnee had a business advertising “Hides Furs Pelts.”

Research shows the business was there around a hundred years ago. The story of the fur trader is just one of the many of early Shawnee pioneers who built this community. John William “Billy” Wayne, a Missouri native, came to Shawnee on the first passenger stage coach from Oklahoma City in December 15, 1894 with Henry Bradley and Frank Stearns, who was later to become the town’s mayor.

At that time, there were only about 200 inhabitants of the just-opened community. Most of the men were working for the railroad. Billy decided to establish a fur trading business. He rode over the two territories, especially the Seminole land to the east, buying hides and furs, most of them raccoon and possum although he was to say later that there was a market for skunk furs at first. He also sold cattle and horse hides.

July 4, 1895, he bought the initial ticket, number zero, that was sold for the first train leaving Shawnee. He traveled to Clinton, MO, to visit friends while his workers loaded up the first freight car in Shawnee with hides and furs

and sent it off the El Reno market.

Billy wasn’t the only one in the “fur, hide, pelt” business along the east end of Main Street.

He said there was a larger firm nearby but “there was plenty of work for us all.” He had the first warehouse on the Rock Island right-of-way and sometimes rented a portion of it to others.

In 1911, the local hide dealer reported that “so far” the trapping season was good and he was looking forward to the early months of 1912. At that time, he had bought 850 pelts, mostly possum, raccoon, skunk, civet cat, and muskrat. The possum hides would sell from five to 65 cents while the raccoons and skunk hides brought from 25 cents to two dollars. Muskrat and skunks usually only sold from five to 30 cents.

Billy had one fox pelt ready to ship he had purchased for 75 cents. He explained that foxes were not plentiful in this area but more likely to be found in mountainous regions of the state.

He complained that the market was “soft” during the 1911-12 season and wouldn’t help his business grow.

When he retired in 1930, stating he was getting too old for such a strenuous life, he closed

down his business and turned the right-of-way back to the railroad. He lived in a little house back of the Federal National Bank at 121 E. Main.

Billy Wayne and his wife, Nellie, had two children, John William, Jr. and Virginia. Sadly, Mrs. Wayne and their six-year-old daughter, Virginia, both died in March of 1912, two days apart. Mrs. Wayne was suffering from pneumonia, but when their little girl died of ptomaine poisoning on the 5th, the mother “suffered a setback” and died 24 hours later.

Billy, Jr. traveled to California about 1925 to try his hand in the movie business. He worked as a photographer on such films as “Hollywood Hotel” and “Hellzapoppin.” At the beginning of World War II he, his wife, Della, and children, John, Robert and Joella, returned to Shawnee where he had a washing machine repair shop.

His sons later worked as projectionists at local movie theaters.

Old fur trader Billy Wayne died in July 1934 and was buried beside his wife and daughter in Fairview Cemetery. A fifteen-foot obelisk marks the family plot. Billy, Jr. and his wife are also buried there. www.shawneeoutlook.com

Travelling Vintage and Antique Shows Stop in Shawnee

Two upcoming vintage and antique shows will be coming through Pottawatomie County in March and April. Junk Utopia for the first time in Shawnee will set up at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center March 11, bringing at least 75 vendor booths. Market on the Meadows is back for a third show April 21-22 in Macomb at 32597 N. Leo Road.

Junk Utopia producer, Tobi Coleman calls the show a picker’s paradise. “Whether you’re into up-cycling, shabby chic or just dreaming about finding that elusive diamond in the rough, this picker’s paradise has a little bit of everything. Prices at the show vary from items selling for a few dollars to a few thousand. Local vendor, Kelly Wesley of Sparkle and Spice, travels with several shows every year. “You’ll see lower prices at Tobi’s show. There are a few true antique pieces, but mostly you’ll see vintage pieces so the prices are lower. Smaller shows have a little bit lower prices,” said Wesley.

Coleman said while large antique shows seem to cater to collectors with a lot of money to spend, her show is more affordable with mostly handmade and vintage pieces. “The vendors do set their own prices. Prices will vary from booth to booth, but it’s not like an antique show at all.”

Market on the Meadows is an outdoor show, on the “meadows” in Macomb. Kenneth and Donna Massey purchased 40 acres for the show.

“We have been a vendor at craft shows for 20 plus years, and we have often desired to be the host of our own show. We always thought it would be indoor. Two years ago, we attended a few outdoor shows as shoppers and fell in love with the outdoor festival vibe,” said owner, Donna Massey.

The show features a variety of handcrafters including quilters, leather workers, jewelry crafters, and dozens of custom made items for everything from gun holsters to wooden signs and furniture.

“You can enjoy shopping for anything from a brand new finely handcrafted item to something old and rustic. Vintage vendors bring amazing

things you may have long forgotten about. You will be surprised at the repurposed things and it’s really creativity at its finest! There are also samples to try and products to learn about. You can do all this in one beautiful setting,” said Massey.

Vendors from Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri have signed on so far with local vendors including Parsons Pines and Primitives, Vintage Depot, the Rusty Rocking Chair and Old Highway 270 Mercantile.

As to prices, Massey said, “Prices will span a wide range, depending on the booth and merchandise. Unlike a formal antique show, Market on the Meadows has a relaxed festival vibe and I believe items will priced accordingly. You may see item for five dollars up to a few hundred.”

Their third show will be April 21-22 in Macomb at 32597 N. Leo Road. About 60 vendors are expected at Market on the Meadows, but the deadline to enter a booth isn’t until March 31.

The Lexus Eco Challenge: Bethel Acres High Students Win $20K

Bethel High School students tackled environmental issues impacting Oklahoma, and won for their hard work $20k in the Lexus Eco Challenge.

They stand to win even more money as they prepare for the second phase of the contest, which awards a total of $500k annually.

The Challenge, which is currently celebrating its tenth anniversary, annually awards cash prizes to sixteen semi-finalist high school groups in two separate categories: Land and Water/ Air and Climate. Two Bethel teams were selected as semi-finalists, each team won $10k.

The Water Warriors team addressed the problem of increased seismic activity as research strongly suggests it relates to wastewater injection. At first, the team were completely opposed to wastewater. “After a lot of research, we realized that there are no great solutions so far,” said Rebekah Clemmons.

“For now, it’s the best method of disposal for wastewater. It’s the most efficient for oil companies and that’s what they’re going to continue to do on a big scale until there’s more research, which is what we’re advocating for.”

Students spoke with professionals in the oil industry, activist groups, professors, and innovators in the industry.

While more research needs to be done, they said there are some solutions they hope oil companies will explore.

“Surface ponds let it evaporate. Another method, which Global Production Solutions uses, is swamp ponds which the wastewater is filtered and in the end the water is reusable. Somethings we want out of wastewater injections is for the water to be reusable,” said Clemmons. “That’s a lot of fresh water being wasted. In Oklahoma, as there is almost constant drought, that water could be reused. We want oil companies to find a better way to reuse the water at least in some way.”

For the second phase of their project, the team set up an information booth inside the State Capitol building in the Rotunda and knocked on legislator’s doors. They are concerned about transparency and the need for rigorous regulations, in addition to funding for research.

“We (Oklahoma) are making money from injecting waste water from other states, which is kind of crazy,”

said Clemmons. “So far the legislature just allows that as long as it’s regulated but we don’t how closely it’s regulated.

We want to promote research into that process and who actually gets to bring in from other states, who decides that, at what pressure and speed the water is injected. There’s not a lot of research about that and it’s not really open to the public. It’s something that seems pretty shady to us,” said Clemmons.

The Energy Elite team focused on air pollution, carbon emissions, and organizing a carpool day to raise awareness among students. They also provided a video presentation to middle school students and an experiment that demonstrated how much chemicals one person can emit in a single day.

Students researched different energy methods and evaluated the pros and cons of sources like wind, nuclear, geothermal, and solar energy.

The carpool day was a big success, with 26 cars and 76 students participating. Their next phase of the project has them reaching out to the largest schools in in all 77 counties to challenge them to host a carpool day event.

They are also seeking to partner with Safe Routes. “We don’t have a lot of sidewalks. Safe Routes promotes biking and walking in communities and they specialize in rural areas,” said Lillie Fuller. “Another fun project we’re doing is Parks and Racks. We joined with our FFA group. They have welding students who built a bike rack and we’re going to donate it to a local Bethel park.”

The funds they have won so far are divided as follows: $2k goes to Bethel High School, $1k to their science teacher and STEM class facilitator, Annie Keehn, and the rest is equally shared among students.

In the final round of the Lexus Eco Challenge, the Water Warriors and Energized Elite will compete against fourteen other teams from across the nation for the grand prize of $30,000 in grants and scholarships. Four firstplace prizes of $15,000 in grants and scholarships will also be awarded to four high school teams. If you are wondering if you may have a problem with alcohol or drugs (including Rx medications) or are concerned that someone you care about may have a problem below are some examples and signs to watch for.

Physical signs of substance: • Bloodshot eyes, pupils larger or smaller than usual.

• Opiate based drugs cause tiny pupils • Stimulant drugs cause dilated pupils • Changes in appetite or sleep patterns • Sudden weight loss or weight gain • Deterioration of physical appearance • Unusual smells on breath, body, or clothing • Tremors, slurred speech, or impaired communication Diagnostic Criteria: • Tolerance: Needing more and more to obtain the same effect • Loss of Control: Using the substance when saying to one’s self they are not going to this time or using more often or longer than intended • Neglecting Other Activities: Spending less time on important activities such as time with family, work, school, hobbies or interest.

don’t have problems typically aren’t wondering if they do. Folks will often say “I can quit anytime I want to.” This is when I tell them about the self-test.

I suggest if they want to find out they should give up the substance or behavior they are concerned about for thirty days. This should not be difficult if there is no problem. During the thirty days of abstinence they are to keep track of how difficult it is for them to stay abstinent. Such thoughts as “Well, I know I don’t really have a problem, this makes no sense to be doing this test” or “I have already made it two weeks, that is enough for me to know there isn’t a problem.”

These can be examples of disordered thinking which can be part of addiction and behavioral health disorders. These are called rationalization, minimization, and justification of the behavior.

It can be extremely difficult to ask for help. There can be fear of being found out, of giving up what feels like the only comfort one may get, of failing and not being able to stop as well as other fears. Encouragement and offers of support to get help are important.

Being involved in the treatment of a loved one leads to better outcomes.

If you think you may have a problem or someone you care about has a problem, please let someone know that can help you. Often the hardest piece of recovery is asking for help. Gateway staff include Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors and Licensed Professional Counselors with extensive training in treating addictive and behavioral health disorders. The good news is that these disorders are treatable.

It is difficult for a person to stop on their own and having help leads to the most successful outcomes.

Shawnee Youth Coalition: Speak Out Members of Shawnee Youth Coalition organized a speaker session allowing teens to address issues before a panel of community leaders at Shawnee High School.

Every year, students independently choose a problem they see in their school or communities and provide solutions. Students must suggest at least one solution to the issue they address.

It was clear students are paying attention to the world around them, and considering the impact of the problems they see. One student bravely spoke up about her own battle with mental illness and the plight of other students who suffer without treatment. She suggested schools offer a counselor whose sole purpose is to provide mental health counseling, instead of only preparing them for college.

Addressing the issue of animal cruelty, a student suggested that the city of Shawnee publish online instructions on how to report suspected animal abuse. Two students spoke up about homelessness, addressing the need to expand shelter and rehabilitative efforts. Bullying, a hot issue in light of the prevalence of cyberbullying, found mention by a student who suggested that students speak up when they see someone bullied and called on teachers to take action when possible.

One student was alarmed how much trash blows around town, suggesting that schools, businesses, and individuals adopt an area to maintain free of refuse.

In an interview with student leaders at SYC, leaders said it was empowering to speak up about issues they feel are important and believed that panelists both listened and offered good points in response.

Director of Prevention at Gateway, Jon Greenwood, said the Speak Out is part of what SYC is about. “It’s empowerment, it’s giving youth a

voice. That’s why SYC formed, because the youth didn’t feel like they were engaged, didn’t feel like they had the opportunity to be involved in the community. This is designed to let young people lead.”

SYC focuses on creating strong leadership skills and community engagement. SYC Coordinator, Taylor Bivings said, “We’re not telling them about the problems. They come up with the problems they see and the ideas how to fix them.”

Greenwood said students see more than parents may realize. Homelessness became obvious to SYC volunteers who host a summer sports and arts camp at Jefferson Elementary for area children. “They see homelessness,” said Greenwood.

“Some adults may choose to be homeless, but they see kids don’t have that choice.”

Food insecurity has also touched their hearts.

SYC students have volunteered at food resource centers including Community Market, the pantry at the Shawnee Middle School, and now the Shawnee High School.

“I like that we can tackle any problem,” said Cale Sugg, a Junior at Shawnee High School.

“Adults are busy. They have families to feed, jobs, and bills to pay. A lot of that is taken care of for us, so we see things they don’t. Growing up, we have a lot of different interactions with our community. I like that at SYC, we have so many different types of people. Even if one of us doesn’t have the solution to the problem, if ten of us have ideas maybe we can combine them into one good idea.”

Those ideas including discussion about volunteering opportunities. They are considering assisting with the budding community garden at Jefferson Elementary or helping with after school activities. Students have their sights set on an upcoming mock party where parents are invited to see what a real party with drugs and underage drinking is like and how to protect their children. The “reality party” will be held in April.
