Summer Family Fun Summer always makes me want to get out and explore with my family. But, between allergies and sunburns, I don’t always love the outdoors. Looking for some great, indoor fun this summer? I’ve got some ideas for you!

• Go to the library! Always my top tip because I love the free entertainment we can find at the library – and the summer is the best time! My kids love the reading program that lets them get free toys and books just for doing one of their favorite things. I also love all the great programs for kids – from concerts to artists to zoo animals, it’s always an entertaining season. Check out justsoyouknow.org for a calendar of events.

• Keep an eye on Groupon. While often flooded with spa deals or restaurants, there are also some great family deals to be had on Groupon. The OKC Museum of Art frequently offers discounted admission, as do other local museums. If you want to do something different, look for laser tag or escape rooms. There are also often additional coupons to be used on Groupon to discount the cost even further. Look out for those!

• Check out a Summer Movie Series. Harkins theaters is offering 10 weeks of movies to kids and their guardians for only $5 for each season ticket. Jones Theaters in Shawnee also has a summer movie series – check out jonestheaters.com for details.

• For great family events in the metro and beyond, many of them free, check out metrofamilymagazine. com. They have a calendar of events happening across the state.

• Look for local deals. Star Skate has a Summer Skate Club, and Incredible Inflatables has open jump times (check their Facebook page). Many local businesses have great deals, just ask!

NUTRITION 101 Are You Sabotaging Your Own Workout?

We can all agree that we need to refuel ourselves after a good workout. Could you be overdoing it though? Many times after a workout people head straight out of the gym to get a smoothie loaded with over 500 calories, a coffee drink filled with sugar, or go by the drive thru for a greasy hamburger and fries. Have you ever uttered the words “I deserve _______ because I worked out today”? Often we actually eat more for our “after workout snack” than we burned during the workout itself. Goals for recovery after a workout include replacing fluid and electrolytes lost and providing protein to aid in repair of muscle tissue. Aim to have your recovery snack or meal within 15-60 minutes following your workout. After exercise, there is a window of time where your body is primed for building and repairing muscles and replenishing what you lost during activity. When putting together your recovery snack or meal, think about food groups. You want to make sure you have a good mixture of protein and carbohydrates. For example, plain Greek yogurt with berries or an apple with a tablespoon of a nut butter. Examples of meal options would be a whole wheat sandwich with lean deli meat and a piece of fruit or stir fry with lean meat, sautéed veggies, and brown rice. The more food groups you have, the more nutrients your body will receive. We don’t need a plate full of just carbohydrates. See the recipe below for an easy after workout meal that includes multiple food groups.

Taco Salad One of our favorite meals in my house. So quick and easy and the whole family approves. You can have this dinner ready to go on a busy night in no time.

Ingredients: 16 oz 93% lean turkey meat 1 Tbsp garlic powder 1 Tbsp onion powder ½ Tbsp ground black pepper ½ Tbsp cumin 5 oz tortilla chips

Bag of shredded lettuce 1 can black beans, drained 1 avocado 1 ¼ cup salsa 10 Tbsp light Catalina dressing

Directions: Cook turkey meat in a skillet over medium-high heat until browned. Drain off any excess fat. Add turkey back to skillet with seasonings and cook for about 5 more minutes on low. Divide remaining ingredients into 5 servings. Place lettuce in a bowl and crush chips on top of lettuce. Top with beans, avocado, salsa, and dressing.

Farewell Shawnee Outlook Readers I

can scarcely believe what I’m about to write as I sit here, looking out of my downtown office window. I love Shawnee and I never thought I’d leave it.

Loving this place and its people as much as I do, the changing needs of my family demand I relocate where those opportunities await.

As I often do when I’m writing, I look out the window and contemplate my words. I’m watching Tom Terry volunteer his time to make this city a more beautiful place to live as he plants flowers alongside the Bell Street median outside the Aldridge. He’s also the reason we have a historical article series in the magazine. As I watch him, I realize even more that the success of this magazine is not dependent on me, but on the people whom I’ve known. So many great people contribute to this publication, but it’s the readers and their stories we feature who define it.

The Shawnee Outlook is about you. So many over the years have told me what the publication means to them. From those conversations, I can tell you it has helped us learn more about each other through the trials and triumphs, the grit and glory of people doing great things for their communities.

With bad news at every turn and droning on every national media outlet, readers have appreciated a place to see the good things happening at home. Between the pages of the cover, we have always tried to bring some radiant hope, some glistening inspiration that

inspires us to make our communities the best they can be.

I am leaving this publication both in the hands of new publishers, Carl and Lori Randall, who purchased it last August, and now a new managing editor, David Dinsmore.

The Randalls are long time Oklahomans and local business owners who have always loved the magazine. David Dinsmore is an accomplished journalist who fell in love with Pottawatomie County where he and his wife have chosen to raise their children. This new team is passionate about moving forward as our communities grow.

The thought of leaving this publication behind, something that has been part of my life and nurtured in my heart for twelve years, at first was frightening. The truth is, this magazine is in good hands not only because of those who will guide it, but because of you. It’s your stories that make this magazine what it is and it’s your dedication to this community that will see it forward.

I want to thank you, readers, for trusting me with your stories. Time would fail me to tell you how you have shaped my own life; how often I borrowed your courage and hope, your determination and joy in the stories I wrote. Shawnee Artist Embraces Heritage Through Giving

As Shawnee’s downtown area continues to be revived with art galleries, places to eat, and antique shops, artist Penny Coates and her art studio Birds of a Feather have found a home in the back of the antique store Oklahoma Territory Antiques.

Upon entering the business, one can see the change with Coates’ artwork blending with the local antiques and collectibles that the owner Wallace Lale has carried since 1995. Coates continues the blending of antiques and art in her studio at the back of the store. As she sees it, “Art and antiques just go together.” The blend continues out to a patio in the back of her studio where she has brightly painted doors from the second floor of the building, creating a colorful back wall. These doors are alleged to have once been part of a brothel that was housed in the building.

Embracing her Native American heritage and Native American name, White Dove, Coates is a great-granddaughter of Antoine and Mary Anderson Bourbonnais, who were members of the 49 original founding families of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Their cabin is still on display on Gordon Cooper Drive near the Citizen Potawatomi Heritage Center.

One readily sees that Coates’ artwork is inspired by her Native American heritage. Her two favorite media are pencil and ink. She draws Native American designs and loves to draw feathers with ink. She laughed and said, “I cannot make a mistake when I am using ink.” She also enjoys woodcarving and has an intricate honor stick which displays the faces of seven native men called the Seven Grandfathers carved down the length of the stick. She explained that the grandfathers represent the seven tribes of the Potawatomi nation.

Another passion of Coates is to provide art lessons for children in the area, no matter their background or their ability to pay. She volunteers frequently with intertribal youth programs and has worked with students who have learning differences; she has even worked with others who have been in protective custody.

She stated, “Art is a way of giving recognition to children. Every child needs something special in their lives.”

This summer she will provide classes in her shop three days a week, with classes in the morning and afternoon. If children sign up for a summer-long program, she will begin first working with pencil drawings, then ink, and finally painting. “I work to give them a wide range

of instruction,” said Coates. Coates also will not turn down any child that wants to take art lessons even if they are not able to pay. She works to obtain donations for the supplies needed for her children’s art classes.

One major project that Coates has accomplished this year is to publish two coloring books. The coloring books were born of a desire to make her art affordable for those who want to enjoy her work. “Since a lot of my artwork is pen and ink, people can get several designs to frame

in one coloring book,” said Coates. “Those who purchase my coloring books have the choice of coloring them or taking the prints and framing them.”

Coates has also been commissioned to create original tattoos, especially for those who want to celebrate their Native American heritage.

She enjoys the challenge of putting together a unique piece of art reflecting the spirit of those making the request.

In addition to children’s art classes and selling her own art, Coates offers private art classes, which are popular with grandchildren visiting their grandparents for a few days. She also offers private painting parties for those wanting a girls’ night out, a family party for multiple generations, birthdays, or for other special occasions. When parties are held at her shop, she serves moon pies and Yoo-hoos, which fit in with the vintage atmosphere of the antique shop. Attendees can also bring their own wine, which she will serve in antique wine glasses.

Reflecting on her artwork Coates stated, “It does not matter if I am teaching a class or creating my own art, I am giving a part of myself to others. If someone purchases my dance stick and they take it into the arena, a part of me is there with them.” www.shawneeoutlook.com

Library Aims to Hit All the Right Notes with Children’s Opera

Cimarron Opera performs “The Owl Tree and Me”

The title of its new children’s opera might be “The New Kid,” but the Cimarron Opera company is no stranger to bringing productions to little audiences around the state.

This year it will premiere its new original show during its tour of the Pioneer Library System with a stop in Shawnee at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the library at 101 N. Philadelphia. The show is free to attend.

“The New Kid” got its start in the hands of a different writer before Cimarron Opera’s artistic and education director, Mervin Tay, stepped in with the company’s music director to create the children’s opera. Tay said the show focused on the issue of bullying in schools, which has continued to gain increased national notoriety as story after story about its effects have come to light.

“We wanted to do something that addresses issues in society,” Tay said.

During their work of bringing children’s operas to schools and other organization, Tay has run across many local stories from kids particularly in arts programs who have experienced bullying, he said.

“This is something that haunts many students all the time,” Tay said. “We wanted to do a show (that demonstrates) being different is not such a bad thing after all.”

The show not only focuses on the harmful effects of bullying on a new student at school but also looks at the causes and effects of these actions on the two bullies themselves, Tay said. The story unfolds in a format that combines a lot of music combined with some dialogue.

Though the company is called Cimarron Opera, the children’s shows produced by the group are not necessarily in what many think of as the traditional opera arrangement, Tay said. The goal is to create melodies that will appeal to the show’s audience and make it fun for them.

“The music is very approachable,” Tay said. “And the subject is very relatable. Everyone at some time has seen or known about bullying happening around them.”

Though many summer programs try to provide activities focused on the concept of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – known as STEM – the Pioneer Library likes its offerings to also include elements of art, said Galyn Hembree, programming specialist for the system. Partnership with Cimarron Opera is a great opportunity to upgrade to the library’s summer programs to take a STEAM approach.

“Our goal is to get children excited and involved,” Hembree said.

Science Museum Takes a Hack at Making Life Easier with Summer Workshop

A quick Internet search for “life hacks” can leave some people’s heads spinning.

Eileen Castle – director of the Oklahoma Museum Network – is here to help.

“It’s really just a way of doing everyday tasks in fun and simpler way,” Castle said.

Castle will be leading a workshop for adults on Life Hacks that tackle life’s annoying problems with a little easy science at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 2 at the library at 101 N. Philadelphia.

Many summer education programs for children go to great lengths to create hands-on experiences, Castle said, but sometimes grown-ups want to do more than sit through another lecture or seminar.

The idea of “life hacking” has caught fire in books, TV shows, and especially the Internet in the last few years, Castle said. Science Museum Oklahoma looked at a few fun and simple ways to give adults the experience and confidence to go out and try a few of these techniques for themselves.

Tasks cover a wide range of subjects – from cleaning around the house to survival skills to ways to trick your brain into eating healthier – that find uncommon uses for commonly found household items, Castle said. And repurposing things most people might simply throw away or put in the recycling bin is right in the wheelhouse for Castle and her staff.

“In the museum world, we tend to find strange uses for regular things all the time,” Castle said.

The concept of the class feeds into the “maker movement” trends that are encouraging the entrepreneurial spirit in homes across the country, Castle said. Sometimes, however, adults need more of a push than kids to try new techniques on the same old problems. They are often hesitant because they do not want to look foolish if their idea doesn’t work, but those

failures can lead to even better and more creative ways to solve the problem.

“In this class, that’s the point,” Castle said. “It’s all right if it doesn’t work.”

In fact, often programs like this change dramatically as attendees from one session might share a tip or trick of their own that Castle incorporates into the next class, she said.

“If you go to the first session this summer … and then go later in the summer it might be a totally different class,” Castle said.

Life Hacks is just for groups 18 years and older not because of the content but because of the sense of camaraderie that comes from adults testing out techniques without having to assist children at the same time, Castle said.

But the age limit also accomplishes one of the goals of the Pioneer Library System’s summer programming that targets adults, said Galyn Hembree, programming specialist for the system.

“We believe in lifelong learning,” Hembree said.

Social Capital: Joe Akins’ Journey

Editor’s Note: This article is part of an ongoing series which examines the perpetuating factors of poverty.

A famous quote by Mark Twain reads, “No man is a failure who has friends.” It’s a quote that can mean different things to people, but to Joe Akins friendship has been a lifeline that spared him from homelessness and despair.

Three years ago, Akins found himself with a medical condition and on disability after 23 years on the rodeo circuit as a bull rider. “I rodeoed everywhere from New York to L.A., but mostly Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. I qualified twice for the national rodeo finals in Las Vegas, so that placed me in the top fifteen in the world,” said Akins.

With the deterioration of his health, he was back in Shawnee and alone. In 2014, he was homeless, staying at the Salvation Army shelter where then Captain Phillip Canning told him about Neighboring 101.

Akins joined the program’s first graduating class where he learned about the causes of poverty. The module focuses on the factors surrounding poverty which demonstrate that a lack of money is not the only defining structure in disadvantaged communities.

Social capital or human capital stood out to Akins. Social capital is defined by the program as people who can be a source of help to another physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. “I didn’t know anything about social capital,” said Akins. “I thought poverty was about money.”

During this time, he reconnected with former elementary school friend, John Winterringer, and met Daniel Shaughnessy. When Winterringer learned that Akins was staying at the shelter, he did something about it.

“He bought a house for me to rent,” said Akins with a smile. “I went and found two other men who needed a place to live and we’ve been there three years this coming October.”

Winterringer said he had just begun getting into rental property, but that he bought the house hoping it would work for his friend.

“He’s worked really hard to get into a home and find other people to share it with. They’re good people and they get along great.”

As to social capital, Winterringer said it opened his eyes. “You have a problem with something and you have someone you can call to work it out. Joe might have had that years ago, but his 12

family is all gone and he lost contact with people he knew who had resources. I’ve taken for granted that I have social capital, and through Joe, I learned not everyone has that.”

Akins is also assisting in the current class for Neighboring 101 in the Blueprints session, which focuses on reaching continued goals after graduation. He said it’s part of growing as a person to get involved in helping others and that he continues to work on his goals. “They (participants) want to continue to grow and that’s what I love about co-facilitating Blueprints,” said Akins.

As part of his own growth, Akins said he’s learned how to express his emotions to friends he can trust. “My emotional capital was very low.

I didn’t know how to process my emotions and I

had to learn that. I just bottled everything up.

Today I try to let people know what I’m feeling.

People don’t have to walk on eggshells around me. To be able to express myself to people I can trust is very freeing,” he said.

Daniel Shaughnessy said watching Akins and others is inspiring. “Joe’s story is one of overcoming debilitating obstacles, remaining very positive about what he has learned through his journey, and applying a new approach to his everyday life. Joe and others like him, inspire me whenever I have the opportunity to talk with him or work alongside him.”

“Everyone needs friends,” said Akins.

“Friends are around in the good times, but it’s the friends who are there in the bad times that are you true friends.”

Good Eats, Great Cause: SCI Food Trucks

Despite dozens of restaurant choices in Shawnee, if you want delivery, you’re probably eating pizza. This summer, residents have more options for restaurants during the busy lunch hour. Clients at South Central Industries are now delivering lunch and taking to-go orders through a food truck program the first Thursday of each month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Food trucks include the Hungry Hippo, the Tater Chic, Murphy’s BarB-Que Shak, the Blue Donkey, Chris’ Grill, and Get Waffled.

Director of SCI, Tina Hanna said, “South Central Industries has been providing vocational training and work opportunities to individuals with developmental disabilities in the Shawnee area since 1981. SCI took on the full challenge to provide integrated work opportunities a year and a half ago.

At that time, this agency had individuals working in a center based setting who needed integrated opportunities in the community. Many individuals had not had the opportunity to experience community work settings. We also had the desire to provide their clients with the ability to meet their neighbors and community members and share their lunch break developing relationships and natural supports. From this desire sprang the concept to open their campus to the community and bring in local and OKC food truck vendors.”

Clients welcome hungry visitors to a section designated on SCI’s campus at 221 N. Kickapoo, a park with shade trees, picnic tables, and chairs where the food truck is parked.

Clients do more than just wipe tables and empty trash cans. “Clients are instrumental in the success of this endeavor. They help with the promotion of the food trucks by designing and distributing flyers to local businesses, churches and schools; receive advance customer orders; deliver take out customer orders; direct traffic; serve meals to waiting customers; clean tables, and generally create a welcoming atmosphere,” said Hanna.

Clients earn minimum wage through tips and delivery fees. “The skills that they are learning are also preparing them for job opportunities in the food industry,” said Hanna.

Other opportunities for jobs skills training include a contract with the city of Shawnee and Tecumseh for city beautification where clients assist city employees with flower beds and litter. They build 700 customized pallets every week for local manufacturers, janitorial services to local businesses, and they deliver a variety of paper goods and hygiene materials to businesses.

“The latest work opportunity is for South Central clients to gain valuable skills through the Community Market where clients sort items, stock items on shelves and in freezers, assist bagging groceries and assist customers in taking their items to their vehicle,” said Hanna.

Every work opportunity is designed to show clients their strengths and weaknesses to help them seek employment in the community. Clients tour businesses, attend quarter-

ly job fairs at SCI, and fill out at least one application on a quarterly basis.

“If a client has barriers or expresses a desire to not participate in the community based job opportunities then South Central still has options to afford them the chance to participate in community activities. South Central has been an active supporter of the local Meals on Wheels program in Shawnee and delivers meals on a daily basis. Many of clients have developed enduring

relationships with the individuals to whom they help deliver meals. Most of the individuals receiving the meals comment that the time spent visiting with SCI clients is more fulfilling than the meal itself,” said Hanna.

Grey Wolves Jazz Band at the Municipal Auditorium

If you can’t resist the sounds of jazz and the sweet sentimentality of a time gone by, then you won’t want to miss the Swing Tunes concert in June at the Municipal Auditorium. Shawnee Grey Wolves, an eighteen-piece band, will be swinging out the sounds of the 30s and 40s in the newly renovated auditorium at the corner of Bell and 9th Street on the 24th at 7 p.m.

Among more than a dozen selections, some songs for the evening include, “In the Mood,” “A String of Pearls,” “Little Brown Jug,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000.”

Ron Hitt and Dick Curtis, spokesmen for the band, said there has been renewed interest in jazz across the state, especially among young people. “We have some younger players in our band,” said Hitt. Curtis said, “We see a lot more high school bands playing jazz than we did fifteen years ago. To see a high school band play jazz was rare.”

Curtis is a former music educator and assistant high school principal. Both Curtis and Hitt 18

played jazz in high school and never really gave it up, staying sharp on their instruments and playing in various bands. It wasn’t until they formed a band to play pep songs for a 1964 class reunion in 2014 that they seriously considered forming an official jazz band.

A year later, they were performing at outdoor events and festivals under the name “Grey Wolves Jazz Band.” Hitt joked the name of the band wasn’t only because it was made up initially of Shawnee High School alumni. “We’re all wolves and we’ve all got grey hair. Most of us are retired, and have grey hair; so, it wasn’t just because the mascot is a grey wolf.”

The band practices monthly for a couple of hours, often at Wesley United Methodist Church or at OBU. Curtis said they have experienced and talented musicians. “We have a saxophone player from Meeker. He played for three years on Carnival cruises and his emphasis was in jazz. That’s kind of the way our band has come together, we’ve got some really good talent,” said Curtis.

Hitt said, “We have several in the group who don’t need sheet music. They can just take off.”

There is a waiting list both for performers who want to join the band, and join as stand-in performers when a player can’t make a concert.

The Swinging Tunes performance is one of the first events to be hosted in the newly renovated facility, now featuring central heat and air.

Kerri Foster, recreation manager for the City of Shawnee, said residents can expect a wide variety of events. “We are excited to develop and plan all kinds of activities and programs to get our community moving and enjoying time together. We will have a huge announcement about programs and events offered starting this fall. Things to expect- Open gym times, group fitness classes, camps, family events, arts, rental opportunities, and much more,” said Foster.

SHAWNEE HISTORY

J. Edgar Hoover Visited Shawnee One would think the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation being in Shawnee would be the talk of the town in 1938, but the news was moved to second page behind the opening of the new Buick dealership.

J. Edgar Hoover, despite the fact his office had cleaned up much of the country’s crime, was not running for office or opening a play. His visit was serious and, though it was only a few hours, it was with a special purpose.

He had been invited by John Wesley Raley, President of Oklahoma Baptist University, to deliver the commencement address at the school’s graduation.

Raley had connections in Washington DC and four years later the OBU head was also one of those instrumental in bringing the navy base to Shawnee. Meanwhile, the 43-year-old director accepted Raley’s invitation.

Hoover had been in federal law enforcement since graduating from George Washington University and was head of the War Emergency Divisions’ Alien Enemy Bureau at the beginning of World War I. President Wilson gave him the authority to arrest and jail disloyal foreigners without trial. At the end of the war Hoover was named head of the Bureau’s Intelligence Division, then Deputy Head and in 1924 President Coolidge appointed him the sixth Director.

agents who displeased him but he was also hailed by law officers around the country, building up a national network of supporters. Hoover gained notoriety during the ‘30s when much of the country was overrun by a criminal element. His organization was credited with cleaning up crime using the new tools of compiling fingerprints and a laboratory to analyze evidence. This was the organization Hoover was in charge of when he came to Shawnee.

While in Oklahoma, Hoover, the “head of the G-Men,” visited the Oklahoma City FBI offices, then his group traveled that Monday morning to

Shawnee. There were only 32 graduates, but the commencement had been moved to the Municipal Auditorium anticipating a large crowd. The 10 a.m. event was advertised as open to the public. Reports were that all 1,600 seats were filled. It was also broadcast onf the Oklahoma Radio Network.

An honorary Degree of Doctor Law was presented to Hoover before his address. He then spoke on “Pioneering in Honesty,” declaring greedy politics was the greatest hindrance to the control of crime. He called on the younger generation to bring changes necessary by strict enforcement of the laws. He

referred to the accomplishments of Oklahoma and the support in ferreting out bandits. He said, “the public-spirited citizens of this state have done so much to bring about a better condition of affairs.”

To the graduates, he suggested they could have no better ambition than to be “missionaries of the Golden Rule.”

Hoover admitted that law enforcement bodies were “fraught through too frequently by corruption. The slimy hands of venal politicians interfere in the discharge of the duties of a court. All this must be changed and it must be done by the younger generation who are sickened by the revolting actions.

“There are evidences that America is awakening to this serious defect.” He tasked the young crowd to “enlist on the side of law and order and work for a great and crime-free America.”

J. Edgar Hoover remained head of the FBI until 1972. He was a polarizing figure especially in his later years. Rumors and stories followed him about his personal life with as many affirmations as denials. Hoover, himself, paid little attention but ran his agency with a voracity seldom equaled. It’s said even presidents feared him but history reports that his abilities to try and keep this country free of crime were unparalleled. And for one spring morning, May 23, 1938, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, an audience heard fiery words from the man himself, an icon of American history.

Treasure Hunting: Shawnee Rocks Shawnee area residents are playing hide and seek across the community by hiding and finding painted rocks. Shawnee OK Rocks is a community activity started for the purpose of treasure hunting painted stones. People paint images on the rocks, hide them, then create clues for people to find them by posting them to the group’s Facebook page.

The activity has gained fast momentum, with the page reaching almost 1,000 members in less than four weeks. Caren Glenn read about a similar group in Texas and decided to start one for Shawnee. She had no idea it would have such an impact.

“It’s not so much about the art as it is like random acts of kindness. I have seen pictures on the Facebook page and people are taking pictures of their kids with these huge smiles on their face.

It’s so simple, such a small thing, but it has a big impact,” said Glenn.

Parents on Shawnee OK Rocks page say it’s been a great way to get their kids outside and away from digital media. “My kids love this,” said Sharyln Ticker. “They get out and away from the TV. They like following clues and finding the reward. It’s even more fun when you know there are others hot on your trail. We also enjoy how artistic people are, even if it’s just a rough sharpie sketch. It’s just good family fun.”

Rocks are sometimes painted with acrylic and brushes, often from paint pots, or even with paint pens and sharpie markers. Members hide the rocks in safe places where no one will be endangered trying to get to the rock. On the underside of the stone, members put a Facebook logo with the page name so if someone finds it they know where to post their find. Posting the find alerts the member who hid the rock that it has been found.

“We’ve had a few people find them and join the page that way,” said Caren Glenn.

Sunny Saunders said finding rocks has been educational. “This activity has provided people with the opportunity to use their thinking skills, explore, and learn about Shawnee,” said Saunders.

“Some of the clues have been, ‘the hospital where Brad Pitt was born,’ and a rock with the Blue Zones logo, or one hidden at Community Market. They’re (members) kind of bringing awareness to Shawnee and what Shawnee has to offer,” said Glenn.

For others, the hunt has been therapeutic. LeAnne Henry Wright, a local artist and art teacher, recently lost her home to a fire. In the midst of 22

hunting for the remains of their lives in the rubble, she learned about the painted rocks through a friend, Kate Kamper.

“I went out and someone had just hid a rock.

When I got that rock, ‘Happy Life,’ I just thought about it and it helped me relax and let go,” said Wright. “It gave us a chance to do something else other than the reality of our lives.”

Wright said she especially enjoys the clues.

“It’s fun to come up with clever clues. We hid a

rock at Will Rogers School. I posted a photo of Will Rogers and the quote, ‘Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.’”

The pastime isn’t just for young families, either. Wailene Higgs said, “It’s not only a very therapeutic pastime to keep aging fingers agile, it’s a way to stay in contact with the community. I’ve learned, even at my age, of places in Shawnee I never knew existed. We are growing by leaps and bounds and I hope it continues. Kids Camp Coming Up: Community Renewal

This summer kids can look forward to a week of fun with Community Renewal as the organization prepares for their summer kids camp next month. The application deadline is June 10 for a week of activities that will take place at the Municipal Auditorium on Bell Street.

The camp will accept 100 kids per week during the two weeks of July 17-21, and 24-28. Children between the completed grades of first through fifth can attend from noon to five one of the two weeks.

“We will feed them lunch at noon,” said Brandon Dyer, executive director for Community Renewal. “We’ll have games, and fun activities like art. The police and fire departments will be out here again, and we’re also partnering with the city to have a day at the Shawnee Splash,” he said.

The second annual camp is part of their outreach to children. CR has developed mentoring clubs called, “Kids Clubs Leadership” based out of Jefferson Elementary, but plans to expand that to four schools this fall: Horace Mann Elementary, Shawnee Middle School, Sequoyah, and Will Rogers.

The clubs focus on “being a whole person,” physically, emotionally, and spiritually. CR Friendship House Coordinator and boys club leader, Travis Flood explained. “This (program) shows them the good things they can do with their lives and gives them the tools they need to do it.”

Sherri Thompson, a retired music teacher from Jefferson Elementary, works with the girls club and Flood is working with the boys club.

They address issues from how to manage conflict in friendships and bullying, to healthy eating, and setting goals for their future.

Community Renewal started a year ago last March. The non-profit, faith-based organization coordinates neighborhood events which allows neighbors to build safer, friendly, and more connected communities. CR is run by We Care members, neighborhood block leaders, and Friendship Houses which serve as a hub for neighborhood activities.

Dyer said the community responded with overwhelming support. “We had hoped for 500 We Care members and 50 block leaders. We are close to 1,400 members and 100 block leaders.

Our Facebook page has 1,600 followers. Our staff has grown from two to six,” said Dyer.

They are currently raising funds to construct the organization’s first Friendship House, which

will be at the corner of 7th and Pottenger Street.

CR is also planning a Friendship House in partnership with the Absentee Shawnee Tribe at the corner of Bryan and Main street. The house will host children’s activities like after school tutoring and mentoring between children and tribal elders.

The We Care movement has also gained momentum within the Shawnee Police Department.

Nearly every patrol vehicle bears the “We Care” decal in show of support, but the department has supported it from early on. Last year they visited kids at the summer camp and they show up at

neighborhood meetings.

Whether it’s volunteering at camp, throwing a block party, or just taking the time to sit and talk with someone, Community Renewal believes that relationships matter. “We are rallying our community around the one thing we all have in common; the capacity to care for another human being” said Dyer. “When we restore and strengthen the foundation of our community through intentional, caring relationships, we will see our community become powerfully restored and thrive.”

Opiate Epidemic In Oklahoma, and around the country, there is an epidemic that is killing more people than car accidents and destroying families and communities. Opioid overdose killed more than 33,000 people in 2015 and is rapidly increasing each year nationally.

Anyone that is prescribed opiate painkillers is at risk of becoming dependent and misusing their prescription. Opioids, also called opiates or narcotics are pain relievers made from opium, which comes from the poppy plant. Types of opiates most commonly prescribed are Hydrocodone with acetaminophen (Lorcet, Lortab, Vicodin), Hydrocodone (Zohydro ER, Hysingla ER), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), Methadone, Oxycodone (OxyContin) and Oxycodone with acetaminophen (Percocet, Meperidine (Demerol).

A high-risk population are those that are dealing with pain and have been prescribed (or over-prescribed), opiate pain medication. Dependency happens fairly soon (usually beginning within two weeks) after taking these regularly. The problem for many is when trying to stop taking the medication they experience withdrawal symptoms and have not developed a tolerance to the pain. It feels worse even though the injury has improved. Of course, the longer the medications is taken and the higher the dose the worse the withdrawals will be. Withdrawal symptoms after stopping or reducing use can be depressed mood, an upset stomach, insomnia, and muscle aches. People don’t like discomfort and tolerating it when it feels like it’s too much can lead to using more medication to cease the symptoms.

Several researchers now believe depression, a common medical diagnosis, might be one underlying cause that’s driving some patients to seek out prescription opioids and to abuse them.

People suffering with depression show abnormalities in the body’s release of its own endogenous opioid chemicals. Depression tends to exacerbate pains, making chronic pain last longer, and hurting the recovery process. It is therefore important that the depression

is treated in patients with chronic pain rather than the opiates becoming the treatment for the depression.

Not only do people with depression tend to be more pain-sensitive, the effect of opioids can, for some, feel as mood-elevating as an antidepressant.

The important information is that ANYONE can become physically and emotionally dependent on opiates after being taken for a period of time.

More importantly is that drug dependency is very treatable; no one has to suffer in silence. It is rarely successful for someone to stop taking these drugs alone. Help is available for individuals and families dealing with this problem. There are options for treatment such as talking with a physician and seeking help through substance abuse professionals. Often medication assisted treatment (MAT) is necessary. If other attempts to stop have failed, it may be time to consider MAT. Resources available in Pottawatomie County include: Gateway to Prevention and Recovery currently has a federal grant for patients to receive medication at no cost if they do not have insurance to cover it. Treatment is necessary to learn how to deal with the addiction and is offered by Licensed Professionals trained in the specialty area of substance use disorders. Science, Math Go Beyond the Books at Gordon Cooper’s Summer Programs The end of the school year doesn’t mean the end of learning.

It might just mean finding a way to teach students without them realizing it’s happening.

“We’re trying to show kids that learning … can involve more than a pencil and some paper, reading the chapter and taking the test,” said Roger Farris, a director of instruction with Gordon Cooper.

While this textbook method of learning has its place, hands-on experience relates its lessons to students in ways they might not expect, Farris said. Classes like Lego Robotics provide opportunities for students to experience activities that expose them to concepts that might not interest them as much when simply reading about them.

The class focuses on elements central to jobs in the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, and other sciences.

“That’s where the great shortage is today,” Farris said.

Instructors give the students a list of tasks for their robots to accomplish unassisted, Farris said.

It’s up to the students to figure out how the robot must be built and how to structure the commands that allow the robot to complete the assignments.

Yet the format lends itself to kids in ways they might not get sitting at a desk, he said.

“Legos are fun to play with,” Farris said. “Kids view it more as play than work or study.”

The students quickly learn that all of the coollooking designs found on the pictures of boxes on the toy aisles at the store will not cut it when it comes to getting things done, Farris said. As they learn that function matters more than aesthetics in this arena, students suddenly begin to apply the scientific principles involved.

“That’s a big mind-changing moment for a lot of kids,” Farris said.

Students learn the purpose and function of tools like sensors, gyroscopes and software during the class, Farris said. The class members write software code to control the robots using Labview, which is the same program used by Boeing, NASA, and other research organizations to command robots all over the world – not to mention on Mars.

Lego Robotics is a good introduction into the world of robotics but does not have enough time to provide an in-depth look, Farris said. Kids that want to pursue it further, however, can look at

joining or starting a club at their school that contends in FIRST Robotics Competitions locally and all over the nation.

Classes like Lego Robotics and Blast Off – which teaches kids the basics of designing a homemade rocket, launch pad, and launch controller – at Gordon Cooper this summer aim to grab kids’ interest in pursuing further studies and even careers they hadn’t considered deeply, Farris said. The key is to engage them in ways that are fun and show them how much fun developing math and science-related skills can be outside of a traditional classroom setting.

“It opens kids eyes to things besides what they are playing on their cell phones or watching on TV,” Farris said. “That ‘aha’ moment for kids is also a big moment for adults.”

Gordon Cooper has offered its Lego Robotics summer program for five years now, during which time it has been among those classes that fill up the fastest when registration opens at the beginning of May each year, said Neisha Haskins, who works as director of adult training and helps plan out the summer program aimed at kids.

Gordon Cooper’s summer Kids’ Klasses – which are already full for this summer – not only direct students toward possible career paths like engineering but also help develop skills and knowledge they can use to make difference now, Haskins said. For instance, the school has long offered a class now called Babysitter’s Boot Camp.

The program stems from similar classes offered by organizations like the Red Cross, one of which Haskins herself took as a teenager, she said.

“It has stuck with me all these years,” said Haskins, who added that most of the class focused on infant and child CPR techniques. “We decided to expand on that.”

The Babysitter’s Boot Camp also combines elements of nutrition and child development as students learn how to create tasty and healthy snacks and create activities that help younger kids work their own skills through crafts, Haskins said. During the course, attendees will also be collecting written material and notes that they compile into a handbook that goes with them to babysitting gigs.

The Kids’ Klasses summer programs have grown over the last 15 years from the weeklong summer academy to three sessions of classes over the course of the summer ranging in topics from photography, yoga, cooking, art, fashion, and more, Haskins said. Even though the classes for this summer are full, the staff at Gordon Cooper uses feedback from the students when planning which courses to keep and even create for next year. Registration usually opens around the beginning of May. “Having these kinesthetic environments has a way of inspiring a child,” Haskins said. “When a child realizes his or her potential now and later in their careers, it benefits the whole community.” www.shawneeoutlook.com
