Rewarding Opportunities I don’t know about you, but for some reason giftgiving occasions often catch me off-guard. Having four kids means a lot of birthdays, parties and, well, gifts.

Here’s another idea for planning ahead and saving some precious cash on gifts and other purchases: use online programs to earn rewards that can be saved up for future purchases.

Swagbucks – My go-to recommendation for online rewards. Swagbucks is a search engine that offers rewards simply for searching the internet when needed.

But the real source of value is by investigating their other earning opportunities, such as watching online videos – or, rather, allowing them to run on your computer or phone app while you do other things – taking surveys, and more.

MyPoints – MyPoints is now directly related to Swagbucks, so they offer many of the same earning opportunities like through-shopping or watching videos, but MyPoints also sends “BonusMail” – which are emails with their special offers. I typically get three to five emails per day, and many offer points simply for clicking a link to show you read the email without having to actually complete the offer – no purchase required.

Pinecone Research – There are many cash-for-survey sites out there, but this is one I’ve found to be the most consistent and reliable for shorter surveys and guaranteed payout for each survey completed.

Loyalty Programs – Kellogg’s, AMC Theaters and others offer loyalty programs that give you points for purchases. Many times these points can be used toward gift cards or coupons.

Keep in mind, none of these are get rich quick schemes. They take some devotion and some time to see significant earnings, but if you have internet access and some time to spare, you can easily save up some points over the course of a few months and start earning gift cards and cash to pad your budget.

Stay Moving at Work Have you heard the phrase “sitting is the new smoking?” Researchers are finding how harmful it really is for us to have a sedentary job, even if we exercise. Our bodies were not made to sit for eight to 12 hours at a time. A study of nearly 8,000 adults published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found a direct correlation between time spent sitting and your risk of early death. When we have sit-down jobs, it can be very hard to find the time to move. If you have a desk job, you could set a timer that reminds you to get up from your desk. There are even free apps that you can download that will do just that.

When you get up, you could do some stretching or walking around the building. If your building has stairs, this is a great way to get in those steps. Little things like taking a note to someone’s desk instead of calling them will help. If you have room in your office, you could even utilize the space for some squats or pushups or sit-ups. Stability balls can be used as chairs at your desk. While sitting on a stability ball instead of a chair, you are constantly utilizing your core muscles to stay balanced. Standing desks have been a fabulous new invention. The standing desk makes it to where you can do all your work while standing. Wearing a pedometer can remind you where you are on your step goal. A great goal to reach for would be 10,000 steps in a day. You can even march in place while preparing the dinner below.

Chicken Couscous Soup If you have been reading my articles for a while, you know how much I love cooking with the slow cooker. For me, it is so great to be able to walk into the house after work and smell a warm dinner.

Ingredients: 8 oz chicken 1 tsp ground black pepper 2 cloves minced garlic 5 carrots, chopped 1 tsp thyme 5 cups chicken broth, low ½ onion, diced ½ tsp turmeric sodium 5 ribs celery, diced 2 bay leaves 1 cup couscous Directions: Place all ingredients except the couscous in the slow cooker. Cook on low for five to six hours or high three to four hours. Add more water or broth for desired thickness.

During the last 10 minutes, stir in the couscous and it will expand.

Aviation Group Looks to Elevate Students’ Career Goals, State’s Economy

The sky is not the limit for Bill Beck’s goals.

It’s just a good starting point.

Beck heads up the nonprofit Heartland Aeronautical Experience, which is trying to build a mobile museum and educational program designed to inspire kids to reach for careers in the aviation and aerospace industries.

Last year amid similar reports, Boeing released a projection that indicated that by 2036, “the aviation industry will need to supply more than 2 million new commercial airline pilots, maintenance technicians and cabin crew.” The company’s breakdown shows a need for 637,000 new commercial airline pilots, 648,000 new maintenance technicians and 839,000 new cabin crew.

And yet, there is a struggle to find good matches for the jobs available today. Reports published as late as last fall have indicated that commercial airlines and other private ventures have had to raid the rosters of the U.S. Air Force to find qualified candidates to fill their need, which is part of the reason the service reported as much as a 1,500 pilot shortage despite growth in recruitment in fiscal year 2016. Many decided not to remain in the service to pursue more lucrative private sector offers because of a limited supply of aviation professionals ready to work those jobs.

Boeing’s outlook summary on the demand for these positions cites a need for educational outreach and career pipeline programs to inspire the next generation of aviation and aerospace workers, particularly efforts that focus on early student engagement and present clear aviation career paths to a wide variety of demographics to meet the global need.

These recommendations by one of the industry’s leading companies lines up perfectly with Beck’s vision of what the Heartland Aeronautical Experience would provide, Beck said.

Its mobile unit would setup in front of schools and at events like air shows and job fairs to provide students in primary school and beyond the chance to see, hear, touch and experience all of the types of work and skills needed to keep the aviation and aerospace industries climbing.

operation, interactive exhibits in the classroom area housed within the trailer, a scale-model airport and even a possible flight simulator.

By the organization’s estimates, this mobile unit working continuously to reach out to students and other groups with interests in pursuing these types of careers could bring about 50,000 people through every year, Beck said. If even 10 percent of those who see what all aviation and aerospace has to offer decide to pursue it further, it could go a long way in helping close current and future employment gaps in the industry.

Shawnee – with its proximity to Tinker Air Force Base and available aviation training programs at Gordon Cooper Technology Center – is uniquely positioned to make an impact on the future of the aviation and aerospace industry, Beck said. In fact, this region of the country has a deep history in leading the way in these fields.

Beck has shared this vision with educators, lawmakers and private industry leaders and has

received numerous ringing endorsements for his vision, as evidenced on the organization’s website and Beck’s records. At this point, however, vision is all he has.

Heartland Aeronautical Experience is seeking donors – particularly those with a need now and in the future for a ready-made workforce to support and operate the aviation and aerospace industries – to get its first project off the ground.

According to a budget provided by the organization, it would take about $1.5 million to develop, construct and begin operating the mobile unit.

After the initial rollout, the annual operating budget comes in at about $100,000.

The economic impact of a workforce this project could produce to support the industry would heavily outweigh the initial investment cost, Beck said, especially for those companies with vast resources that would directly reap the benefits of inspired employees.

An Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission study showed $43.7 billion in annual statewide

economic activity resulting from the aviation and aerospace industries, including a total employment of just over 74,000 in this state alone. The three major contributing factors of this impact come from military aviation, off-airport employers engaged in aviation and aerospace and 109 operating general and commercial airports.

Beyond Oklahoma, the threat of an understaffed aviation industry does not just impact travelers needing to fly and having to pay higher costs for fewer flights due to demand, Beck said. It affects national security if the armed services can’t find enough personnel. Even with unmanned aircraft, there is still a need for pilots to operate them and maintenance staff to keep them flying. Other economic stressors could be as simple as there not being enough freight pilots to make sure people’s Amazon orders arrive in a reasonable amount of time, interrupting and dragging down consumer spending. Those are just the easily recognizable issues.

What’s not as visible are the number of driven and talented students who dedicate their brainpower to the development of video games rather than engineering the next great aerospace innovation, Beck said. Students can easily explore and see the benefits of online fields that require skills in science, technology, engineering and math,but it can be hard for the tangible aviation industry to get students’ attention.

Part of this issue comes as a result of increased airport security in a post-9/11 world, Beck said. Airports of all sizes must comply with stringent security measures that cut off kids – many of whom cannot afford to fly commercially – from experiencing aviation firsthand. That’s where having a mobile unit that comes to them can help boost students’ interest in becoming aviation and aerospace professionals.

Unlike many artists, Charles Clark Kiktode does not create his art to sell, but he instead looks forward to the day when he can display his 130plus paintings in one space. He characterizes his art as being contemporary dystopian events that he has painted.

“I am not so interested in painting a particular genre or style but rather how I feel each event should be depicted,” Kiktode said.

Whereas Kiktode does not paint in what one might consider a typical indigenous style, he considers his Native American heritage as being a major influence upon the art he creates. Kiktode describes his art as being a new spin on the ancient stick figures and symbols that would tell the stories of warriors and battles. His art is typically his reaction or retelling of modern events coupled with Native American symbols, icons from literature and other spiritual representations.

One example of this is a painting that he did of a woman at the Standing Rock Protest. He painted the woman in ethnic clothing with tears on her face, and in the background on the rocks one sees seven shadows, who are representative of the seven Potawatomi grandfathers watching over her.

Another subject matter that Kiktode has explored is that of children who function as adults because of the environments where they live. He has painted his own representation of the five year old boy in Aleppo in the ambulance that many saw

as the symbol of Syria’s suffering, and he also painted Wasil Ahmad, the ten-year-old hero of the Khas Uruzgan siege who was later assassinated by the Taliban.

Closer to home, he has also painted to support others who are in grief or pain. Last year, he painted a portrait of the fallen Tecumseh police officer, Justin Terney, for a silent auction that raised money for the Fallen Officers Fund. He also painted a picture of Robert Godwin, the victim of a shooting that was live-cast online. He sent the portrait to Godwin’s daughter because he wanted to reach out to the family to show kindness to people he had never met.

In addition to the above-mentioned paintings, Kiktode has many paintings that are political satire depicting local and national events.

“I am serious with the way that I do these paintings,” Kiktode said. “I paint an event and it may look like I am being comical, but it is always to show an underlying message.”

The only formal artistic training that Kiktode received was as a child at the former University School in Norman.

“Every child was enrolled in one hour of art and one hour of music each day in addition to the normal academic subjects,” Kiktode said. “While my peers were painting normal eight-year-old flower paintings, I was painting brightly colored works inspired by Dali and Max.”

In regards to growing as an artist, Kidtode said “you learn by doing and you learn by experimenting.” Most of his paintings are oils, and he paints his backgrounds with his fingers instead of brushes.

“With oil you have hours to get it on there, and I like using my fingers,” he said. “Maybe it is a flashback of using finger paints in kindergarten, but you can feel the paint and it is creative expressionism.”

Kiktode’s dream is a project that he calls Ars Prima, which is Latin for “primal art.” He wants to bring back the days when bohemian artists could sit in a café with other artists, writers and poets and share their work.

“Even if it is getting together with a group of artists over lunch or dinner once a month and showing our work to each other, that would be a beginning, a place to show and talk about our work,” Kiktode said.

He is also involved with the Teach First Nation Fund, which allows him to work with other Native American artists and help them learn the business side of being an artist.

Even though Kiktode hopes to one day display all of his art in one location, he does occasionally do smaller shows and fairs. He has displayed his paintings at Main Street Photo Studio, at the FireLake Balloon Festival and regional art and craft fairs. www.shawneeoutlook.com

Whether you are looking for local information or planning to explore our great state, we can help. We always have the Shawnee Visitor Guide available at the office as well as our visitor map that features all the attractions and points of interest around town. We also provide services like assistance with group tours and scheduling, finding an event venue or helping set up hotel room blocks.

Last month, we received copies of the new 2018 Oklahoma Travel Guide. The large brochure is a comprehensive look at what to do, where to eat and where to sleep in the entire state. We also received the 2018 Oklahoma Outdoor Guide, which features all the state parks and other outdoor activities available throughout Oklahoma. Another popular statewide guide is the Oklahoma Dining Guide, which is a curated list of the absolute best places to eat throughout Oklahoma. Shawnee had several mentions in that guide, including Hamburger King, Frybread Taco and Benedict Street Marketplace.

Because we share our lobby with the Greater Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, there are also brochures and flyers available from various businesses and charities around Shawnee. Additionally, the Chamber of Commerce and the Shawnee News-Star worked together on a new 2018 street map. They are hot off the press and available in the lobby. We also hand out phone books on behalf of the Shawnee Chamber.

Another great resource for information about Shawnee and events is our website VisitShawnee. com. Newly redesigned in the last year, it won an award from Frontier Country – part of the State of Oklahoma’s tourism initiatives – for best new travel website in 2017. The Visit Shawnee website features a blog, events calendar, hotel rate details, newsletter sign up, meeting venues, group tour

options, places to take selfies, information on all the attractions and parks in the city, restaurants, shopping and more. It is a fantastic resource for what is happening in the area and is fully compatible with mobile phones and tablets.

Finally, we also are active on several social media platforms. Our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages regularly feature information on events, history of the area and area attractions.

16-Year-Old Amateur Puppeteer Pulls at the Heartstrings Jasmine Bennett didn’t want to crash and burn again.

The 16-year-old amateur puppeteer entered last year’s Assemblies of God Youth Ministries district puppetry competition with some slight anxiety. Jasmine had already competed in the previous year’s competition, in which the top three finishers advance to nationals, but she unfortunately stumbled with her solo routine.

“The past year I was really nervous,” Jasmine said. “The year before I really messed up. I crashed and burned. I really tried to do too much with my routine. My box with all my props fell through the opening of the curtain.

“I think that I started crying off the puppet stage.”

Jasmine promised herself that she would not shed any tears of sadness at a competition again. Entering last year’s district competition, she worked diligently as she perfected her routine and performed it for others in the weeks and months leading up to the competition.

The additional time of focused preparation paid off in a big way as Jasmine’s solo routine earned herself a top three finish and a spot at nationals.

“I was really excited because it was the first year that I ever had my puppet solo go to nationals,” Jasmine said.

Jasmine was introduced to puppetry by her older brother, Ethan, who took part in the puppet ministry at the family’s church, First Assembly of God in Tecumseh, which has been training youth puppeteers for more than two decades.

“The whole reason I got into it was because of him,” Jasmine said. “I wanted to be closer to my big brother. The year I decided to join the ministry, he dropped out of it, but I decided to stick with it.”

Jasmine joined the program when she entered sixth grade, as the ministry is for children in sixth to 12th grades. Instructors, which include older students, spent the next few years helping develop Jasmine into a legitimate puppeteer.

“They showed me how to move my puppet’s mouth to make it look real,” Jasmine said. “The whole point in what we do as puppeteers is to make the kids or audience members believe that the puppets are real.”

Jasmine Bennett won a spot to compete at a national puppet competition last year before a family car accident derailed her plans. She is working hard to return to nationals again this year.

It didn’t take long for Jasmine to make young children believe that her puppets were the real deal as her routines began to evolve over the years. From simple rod maneuvering with beginner puppets to having a puppet perform a parody of Elton John’s “Crocodile Rock,” titled “Sunday School Rock,” to the more sophisticated work she now performs at competitions.

“You don’t need any talents to become a puppeteer,” Jasmine said. “You just have to learn the skills. You need to build up arm muscles is the main thing, learn how to mouth the words correctly and how to move it so it’s not like a statue.”

Jasmine has proven herself to be a gifted puppeteer, but even though she earned a spot in last year’s nationals held in Anaheim, California, she ultimately didn’t get to take the stage. Jasmine and her family were involved in a serious car accident in which their vehicle rolled over four times

and resulted in Jasmine’s mom Donna suffering serious injuries.

“I was disappointed that we couldn’t have her go to nationals,” Donna said. “At the same time, I was so very proud of her. My mom and I spent four days in the hospital. I had a severe concussion, lacerated legs and arms and five broken ribs.

It took months of recovery for me to get better, and she was there every step of the way.

“I couldn’t put myself to bed those first two weeks, and she had to help get me up every morning. She has such a big heart and I couldn’t be prouder.”

Jasmine said the reality of what was happening began to take hold.

“Yes, I was disappointed when I realized that we couldn’t go,” Jasmine said. “There was even a few weeks there that we thought I might get to go with the team, but it fell through. I was upset, but I knew my mom needed me, and that was more important.”

For Jasmine, missing out on being with her team – who finished second as a team at last year’s nationals – has given her even more motivation for this year’s district and national competitions held in Houston. The district competition will be held April 6-7.

“This year I am trying to win first,” said Jasmine, who hasn’t settled on her solo routine just yet but is wanting to do something different. “I want to beat out the older students this year, and I want to take first place at nationals.”

The teenage puppeteer though is also making sure she can help the younger students in the ministry program avoid crashing and burning.

Jasmine and her puppet team will be teaching puppetry to the younger children in the ministry this May and have them perform for the church during a Sunday service.

That compassion is what impresses her mother more than her strive to win nationals.

“Jasmine is just so tenderhearted,” Donna said. “When she sees others wanting or needing help she’s one of the first ones to volunteer, especially if its something she knows she can help them with. If she doesn’t know how to help them with something they want or need to learn, she’ll find them somebody that can help them instead of just tell them she doesn’t know what to do. The word bouquet has drifted far from the Old French term that loosely translates into “clump of trees,” but more recently it has begun taking on different associations outside of its relationship to flowers as well.

This time of year especially, shoppers can find bouquet-type arrangements for all kinds of products, particularly those of an edible nature.

Sadie J’s Popcorn – located at 2426 N. Harrison – offers such bouquets that could feature one of the many flavors of gourmet popcorn available along with other treats, said Tammy Sinor, who owns the store with her husband Wade Sinor. The uniqueness of the products and the packaging they offer helps make it a standout gift for those receiving it.

“It puts a smile on people’s face, because 99 percent of people like popcorn,” Tammy said. “They get excited because it’s different.”

Their decorative tin cans come in four sizes from one gallon to six and a half gallons that can hold up to three flavors, Tammy said. They can even ship the cans or bags – which also come in several sizes – to faraway val18

In addition to themed bouquets, tin cans and boxes, Sadie J’s Popcorn stocks its shelves with seasonal flavors of popcorn that fit the mood of the season in taste and appearance, Tammy said. For Valentine’s Day, shoppers can find such flavors as strawberry chocolate, cinnamon, cotton candy and strawberry cheesecake.

The Sinors develop their own flavors and have so far come up with about 100 different kinds that they can use seasonally, all year and in-between, Tammy said. The color of each flavor they display can be a result of the season. Once the red-and-pink Valentine’s Day season is over, Sadie J’s Popcorn will start displaying more flavors that coincide with the color green to go along with St. Patrick’s Day followed by Easter-themed varieties.

“We keep about 50-60 flavors at one time,” Tammy said. “Whatever the season is, we try to bring in flavors that fit.”

Beyond holidays like Valentine’s Day and Christmas, the Sinors would

like to make Sadie J’s Popcorn part of customers’ lifestyles, whether it’s picking out something unique for a thank you, get well, birthday or other gift, Wade said. They also offer special items for people who work as teachers, nurses and other critical occupations.

Daughter Whitney Sinor also stocks the counter at Sadie J’s Popcorn with a variety of fudge offerings, and they have a selection of bulk candy and other items.

In addition to giving each other packaged gifts, couples can also share experiences to enhance the romance, such as booking some time together at local spas.

SimplYou Day Spa offers packages for Valentine’s Day meant to give that special someone or a couple the chance to take a break from it all, owner Lori Burchette said. Convention Hall Had Praised but Short-Lived Existence It wasn’t long after Shawnee came into existence that city fathers began to make plans to erect a multipurpose office and theater building.

The race into what became Shawnee, Oklahoma, took place on September 22, 1891, a year and a half after the famous land run that settled the Oklahoma City area. Within months, Shawnee was a bustling city with businesses, homes, churches and schools. Once the railroads came, it was rivaling Oklahoma City and Guthrie for population.

Within a year of becoming part of the country’s newest state, with hundreds of homes stretching in all directions, dozens of hotels and a Main Street lined with retail businesses, Shawnee needed a Convention Hall. To keep up with other thriving cities, plans were quickly worked out to construct a building worthy of the town, and in 1909 a bond issue was passed for $50,000.

City leaders were at odds about where to build what was sure to become the center of town.

Some wanted it just south of the new Carnegie Library, because the city already had title to that property. Yet, some felt Broadway Street was being favored too much. Finally after days of “considerable parlaying and caucuses,” the city council voted to locate the proposed Convention Hall on the southeast corner of Ninth and Union Streets.

In October, construction – with E.P. Putnam and Link Cowan as contractors – began on the two-story building with a basement. Copies of local newspapers, photos and a list of the city administration were placed inside the cornerstone.

Declared an “imposing structure,” the top floor housed a theater with a seating capacity of 500. To use it for dances, it was designed with a “ratchet floor” allowing a level pitch as well as an incline for seating facing the stage. Opera chairs could be moved in and out for whatever event was taking place.

Over the years, the stately Convention Hall housed various offices including the chamber of commerce, the school board or sometimes school classes as the district struggled to keep up with the bulging population. Statewide conventions were held in the theater area. Religious organizations also took advantage of the good location

for meetings or while they were having buildings constructed.

Only 17 years later, Convention Hall was simply no longer needed. The City Hall, which had been built a couple of years before the Convention Hall, was adequate for town officials’ quarters. The Phillips Hotel (later called the Aldridge) provided space for events. The Masonic and Elks buildings housed many offices. Smaller groups were renting their own buildings, and the board of education was considering a move. Also according to reports, it was “in bad shape” and described as “practically useless.” It needed a new roof, new lighting, a heating plant and new windows.

By 1927, citing the cost of upkeep and lack of need, the City of Shawnee put the Convention Hall up for sale. One bid for $22,000 was declined then in 1929. A high bid of $28,000 was accepted from local businessman, C.C. Hawk.

It was obvious how quickly times could change. Hawk sold the site to Fred Turner and

John Brothers, who planned to tear down Convention Hall and build a bus station. When the Hall was constructed in 1909, there were fewer than a half dozen automobiles in Shawnee. The autos were described as an “impractical novelty that scared the driving teams.” Shawnee had a trolley and a fountain just off Main Street for watering horses.

The chamber of commerce said six commercial bus lines ran through the city operating 52 buses. Turner and Brothers’s terminal – with offices, loading space, restrooms and a lobby – would serve all the lines, but over time the bus station also outlasted its usefulness.

Fewer buses were needed by the public as more families had their own cars. By the late 1950s, the bus terminal had moved to west Main Street and commercial businesses had taken over the original site of what was claimed to be the “temple of civic glory.” Today, it’s hardly more than a vacant parking lot and unused building in a little more than a hundred years.

Legacy Parenting Celebrating Its Second Birthday with Open House, Baby Shower Legacy means more than an organization name to Lacey Holt.

Legacy is more than affecting generational change by providing education and empowerment to parents who need it.

Legacy is something left to Holt by Laynie Hope, the daughter she lost to a rare genetic disorder at age two and a half.

“Everything I do is because of her,” Holt said.

That heartache led Holt to her first experience working with nonprofits that eventually led to her taking over the executive director position at the Legacy Parenting Center last March.

“Our mission is to build stronger, healthier families through education, resources and mentoring,” Holt said. “Building that relationship with the family really keeps them coming back, because when you have someone who knows you and cares about you and knows your babies, then you’re more likely to stay plugged in.”

Legacy Parenting opened its doors two years ago this month, and to celebrate its two-year anniversary it will host a come-and-go open house and baby shower 3-6 p.m. on Feb. 15 at its offices at 126 S. Center St. Planners created a registry with Amazon and Walmart for guests who’d like to contribute to helping families through the organization’s Legacy Store.

The store offers diapers, wipes, outfits, toys, books, pacifiers, cups, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and more to parents undergoing the Earn While You Learn curriculum used by Legacy, Holt said. About 40-45 families per week currently come through Legacy’s doors to undergo lessons focusing on specific aspects of parenting children under the age of six – like handling tantrums and nutrition – that are taught via video and a live mentor. The mentor talks with the client about the lesson, helps apply it and answer any questions. The goals of these lessons are to develop good parenting skills and knowledge, especially among parents who did not have many examples from when they were children.

“I see in our community a lot of struggling moms and dads,”said Tiffany Yarbrough, Legacy’s director of client services. “They want to be better parents, but they don’t know how to do that.”

Each of these sessions earn parents points they can then take to the Legacy Store to spend 24

on any of the items available. The number one item coming off the shelves are diapers and wipes, which are not available through any publicly funded program in Oklahoma, Holt said.

Volunteers organize diapers into packs of 25 diapers, and Legacy Parenting provides 150-200 diaper packs per month overall to its clients – who range in age from 13 to 78.

“The majority of our clients first come because they need diapers,” Holt said. “They keep coming because of the relationships they build when they come every week.”

The majority of the Legacy Store’s items come from donations via word of mouth and private efforts. The only items required to be brand new are car seats and cribs due to safety standards, Holt said. Other items can be new or gently used.

Volunteers conduct quality control for all donations, and if Legacy can’t use it, the donation

goes to other programs that benefit homeless families.

The aim is to make parents feel “empowered and encouraged” to do something good for their children and their families, Holt said. Some can’t go anytime they want to a children’s boutique and shop, but they can get that experience at Legacy.

“We want this to be quality,” said Holt, who has made it a personal goal to give the store a boutique feel. “We want families to feel special when they come to do their lessons. They’ve worked for this. They’ve earned this.”

In addition to their own efforts, Legacy has partnered with the Shawnee Parent Education Program, which provides hands-on, home- and school-based parenting classes for those with children up to three years old. One of SPEP’s focus is working with teen parents in high school

– a group for whom Legacy’s 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule makes it hard to take advantage of the organization’s resources – so teens taking SPEP courses can earn points to use at the Legacy Store.

This year, the two organizations are looking to expand their partnership to conduct group sessions at Legacy’s offices that will ideally include “stay and play” childcare while the parents attend the lessons. Holt said. Legacy’s current curriculum allows for an individualized program to meet the needs of each client depending on the age and development of their children, but the addition of group and interactive programs will add a new dimension to the relationships the families have with the organizations and each other.

As Legacy has expanded its services, boosted its donation inventory and helped more community families, its need for a bigger roster of volunteers has also continued to grow, Holt said. With only a staff of two, Legacy needs volunteers for sorting donations, providing laun-

dry help, organizing and stocking the store, mentoring the clients and other services.

Mentors are a special type of volunteer as they help the clients through the curriculum and build the relationships crucial to Legacy’s mission. The main requirement Holt said she seeks in mentors is that they are parents themselves. Legacy provides curriculum training for those who want to help in that way. There is room for 10 mentors per day to meet with families alongside Holt and Yarbrough. Groups looking to benefit the community can be especially effective for Legacy, whether through church, school or civic programs.

“We want to encourage lasting change,” Holt said. “It’s not just a crisis, immediate handout. It’s long-term relationships. If you treat the symptoms, it’s not going to fix the problem.

If the symptom is, ‘my baby needs diapers,’ then we can help you with that, but let’s get to the root of it.”

What to Know About Aging Adults and Mental Health Disorders

Getting older can be challenging and may include changes mentally and emotionally as well as physical, relational, social and financial. These are common and expected changes. However, mental health changes in older adults are often overlooked.

Depression and anxiety disorders may begin during the aging process for different reasons. Often chronic diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s will impact the mental health of older adults. Other chronic illnesses can affect the person in ways that make coping with life more difficult and in ways they have never before experienced.

According to National Council on Aging, depression, anxiety, addiction and other mental health issues are not a normal part of aging. Left untreated they can lead to fatigue, illness and even suicide. We promote programs that can help seniors cope.

One in four older adults experience some type of mental health disorder like depression, anxiety and dementia. This number is expected to reach 15 million by 2030.

It is just as important for an older person to seek help for symptoms of depression as it is for a younger person. The impact of depression on the health of older adults can have serious impacts on health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. It can complicate the treatment, including making it more difficult for someone to care of himself or herself.

Sometimes depression is disregarded as frailty, or it may be viewed as an inevitable result of life changes, chronic illness and disability.

Drinking problems are often neglected by families, doctors and the public. Prescription drug misuse can be very common in the elderly. Sometimes it can be hard to know if the symptoms being experienced are related to mental health, chronic diseases or medication throughout the aging process.

Warning signs of possible mental health disorders include: • Noticeable changes in mood, energy level or appetite • Feeling flat or having trouble feeling positive emotions • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much • Difficulty concentrating, feeling restless or on edge • Increased worry or feeling stressed • Anger, irritability or aggressiveness • Ongoing headaches, digestive issues or pain • A need for alcohol or drugs • Sadness or hopelessness • Suicidal thoughts • Engaging in high-risk activities • Obsessive thinking or compulsive behavior • Thoughts or behaviors that interfere with work, family or social life • Unusual thinking or behaviors that concern other people Seeking help is the first step and can be the hardest step. Often older adults are hesitant to let their friends and family know if there are any changes going on out of fear of loss of control over their life and decisions. Sometimes there is no one to discuss these issues with due to living alone without frequent contact with any other people. Stigma, shame or denial associated with mental illness and substance abuse can also lead to people not seeking help or discussing the problems with anyone.

Medical diagnosis can be one thing to accept, but when it comes to these other problems it can be difficult for other adults to conceive that an older person, especially woman, may have problems with alcohol or others substances.

Contacting a physician or local behavioral health provider can be a start for finding the resources available for help for older adults.

Each month during the school year, “Future Tense” will feature student writers sharing something they enjoy about the community – whether they are temporary visitors at Oklahoma Baptist University or lifelong residents.

My name is Masela Clements.

I’m a senior at Shawnee High School, and I want to tell you about FCCLA. What is FCCLA you ask?

FCCLA stands for Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. FCCLA has helped me meet new friends and help my community along the way. We do fun activities like Star events, which brings people from different states and schools and sometimes even different countries.

When I heard that Star events were a national competition, I didn’t know if I wanted to join. I was shy and didn’t like talking in front of a lot of people, but I learned that they weren’t mandatory so I joined.

I ended up loving it and have done many Star events since.

They have cake decorating contests and T-shirt contests. Every year, each school chapter makes their own FCCLA superhero inspired T-shirt. At the local meeting we all present our shirts, and we pick the winners.

I’m not as shy as I was, and I have made many lifelong friends.

The schools each have presidents and vice presidents who represent us and pick what we do as volunteer work. We do different kinds of volunteer work locally.

In February, Shawnee High School FCCLA members are going to go to Oklahoma City to work at the food bank. We pack boxes and help send out food.

I like to go to a pet shelter and play with the animals, take them for walks and feed them. FCCLA wants us to do stuff we enjoy or want to find out more about. I love animals and want to become a vet or zo-

ologist when I get older, so going to the pet shelter gave me experience about the job I want to have.

It teaches us many basic life skills, such as communication, people skills and how to go after what we want in life. My personal favorite though is when we do Christmas connections. Every year, Shawnee High School FCCLA plans and hosts a Christmas connection party at the school.

Mary Rolette and Amy Oleinik – who are Shawnee High School’s FCCLA sponsors and two of the coolest teachers at Shawnee High in my opinion – call one of the day-cares here and ask them to have all the preschoolers write a Christmas list.

They put down what they want for Christmas and some of their favorite food and drinks. The day-care sends us the list back and we divide them up among all the third-hour

teachers. The teacher gives the list to their classes and the high schoolers plan a party and buy gifts for the kids. We get them their favorite foods, drinks and they get to meet Santa. It helps make sure that the kids that might not have gotten a lot for Christmas feel special and get the presents they want.

I asked other fellow FCCLA members what they think has helped them most in FCCLA. Priscella is one of my closest friends. We actually met at one of the FCCLA meetings. We hit it off right away, and we have been best friends ever since. She goes to Tecumseh High School – where she is a FCCLA member – and Gordon Cooper Technology Center, so we wouldn’t have crossed paths if it wasn’t for the FCCLA meeting.

“FCCLA is a fun way to get out there and make new friends while

doing good things for our community,” Priscella said.

At the end of the school year, FCCLA members get to go to Frontier City as a field trip, which is cool.

So it’s not all work.

FCCLA is really rewarding, it makes you feel good about yourself, because you’re helping your community be a better place. Even after you graduate or leave the program, you keep the feeling of wanting to help.

You might continue to volunteer for the things you liked to do when you were a part of FCCLA. I know when I graduate, I’m going to continue to volunteer, because I enjoy helping others and it makes me feel good about myself. FCCLA is a great program for everyone. Become a FCCLA member with your local chapter and become a leader of something you can be proud of.
