How to Find Children’s Clothes on the Cheap

A

s a mom of four, I know it can get pricey clothing your kids. As such, I’ve found a few tricks of the trade.

• Hand-me-downs: If you don’t feel comfortable asking someone directly for their previously used pieces, maybe put a call out on Facebook asking if anyone has, for example, clothing for a boy size 4T that they don’t need anymore. Many like to try to sell their cast-offs, but others simply donate them and might be more than happy to pass them along to you. When you’re done with them, you might find someone else who would be more than happy to take your hand-me-downs.

• Consignment Sales: There are many sales of gently used children’s clothing that take place in the Shawnee and Oklahoma City area. These sales typically only last for a weekend, and the final day often offers steep discounts on remaining items. Keep an eye open for these. Check out the Monkey Business sale happening at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee at the end of this month. Find details for it on Facebook.

• Deal Sites: Websites like Jane.com or Zulily.com offer sales on fashionable items for kids – and adults. Sizing can be iffy, so be aware and check sizing charts. Also, don’t forget to factor in shipping costs per item.

• Retail: Look for clearance items you can buy a size larger and save for the next year. My favorite store when I discover an item of clothing my children don’t seem to have – like a single pair of tights or a good pair of jeans – is The Children’s Place. Their website offers free shipping on every order, so I don’t have to wait until I can make a big order. They also frequently have sales and coupons, so join the mailing list to stay updated.

Calories In Vs. Calories Out Many questions are asked about calories. When I was in college we learned how to keep a food journal and how to count calories. This was to help us learn about portion control, food journaling itself and how to read food labels.

Now it is easy to just type the food you are eating into the app you are using on your phone. The apps even make it now to where you can scan the barcode into your food app – mind blowing!

As with everything, calorie counting has its pros and cons. The pros to calorie counting are what I mentioned above: learning how to read a food label (unless your app does it for you), paying attention to what you are actually consuming and being able to notice habits. Having to actually count out your chips and then write the calories down takes a lot more work than just sitting on the couch and eating straight out of the bag until you have had enough.

When we have to measure out a portion, that can really help us learn what a portion is supposed to look like. If you notice that you are constantly going over your calorie goal, you may not be surprised why you haven’t been losing weight.

When it comes to calories, less is not always better. The minimum recommendation for women is 1200, and the minimum for men is 1800. If you need help finding your number, I would be happy to help.

The main con of only looking at the calories is you may not be looking at the whole picture of your diet. Someone can eat 1200 calories of nothing but junk, and while they are staying in their calorie range, they aren’t actually fueling their body with nutrition. Even though it might not be the perfect way of doing it, calorie counting can be a great place to start.

Vegetarian Taco Soup I dare you to walk in the door of your house after this has been cooking in the slow cooker all day and not immediately want to get a bowl and spoon out. It really tastes as good as it smells, as well.

Ingredients: 14 oz frozen corn 14 oz kidney beans, drained and rinsed 14 oz pinto beans, drained and rinsed 14 oz black beans, drained and rinsed 7 oz green chiles 14 oz can stewed tomatoes, Mexican style 1 package low sodium taco seasoning ¼ tsp cumin ½ chopped onion 2 chopped garlic cloves ½ chopped bell pepper 2 cup low sodium vegetable broth 1 cup water Avocado and cilantro for optional toppings.

Directions: Put all ingredients in the crockpot. Cook on low 5-6 hours or high for 3 hours.

Nutritional Information per serving (does not include optional toppings): Makes: 8 servings, 1 cup each Calories: 305 Total Fat: 1.5g Saturated Fat: 0g Cholesterol: 0 g Sodium: 790mg Carbohydrates: 59g Dietary Fiber: 16.5g Protein: 16g Nutrition 101: My challenge to readers is to have one meatless meal a week. This is a great one to start with. You honestly don’t even miss the meat. If you have someone in your house that insists on having meat, they can easily add cooked meat to their bowl and you won’t feel like you are cooking two meals. According the History of the U.S. Food Administration, the United States consumes 75 pounds more meat than past generations. You might find it easier than you think once you start. If you enjoy it, you could slowly add in another meal here and there. You won’t just notice the benefits in your waistline but also to your budget. Produce is way cheaper than meat and very filling.

OBU Theatre Taking Audiences Down the Rabbit Hole with ‘Alice’

Matthew Caron does not want to direct a play that just will entertain kids and their grown-ups for a couple hours. He wants to inspire another generation of live theater patrons and performers.

“I want what we do here to help foster a love for the arts or an interest in theater,” Caron said.

Along those lines, Caron and his cast of Oklahoma Baptist University students will take audiences down the rabbit hole with performances of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” at 7:30 p.m.

Feb. 15-16 and 2:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the CraigDorland Theatre on the OBU campus.

OBU Theatre will be producing a version of the Lewis Carroll novel as adapted by Simon Reade, and many audience members might recognize the story from the classic Walt Disney animated film, “Alice in Wonderland.” The action centers around the imaginative and energetic Alice, who follows a frantic White Rabbit into a land of eccentric characters and whimsical settings. Along the way, Alice must learn to be brave, decisive and open-minded as she explores challenges and obstacles posed by classic literary icons like the

Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter.

It isn’t only the fictional Alice that must overcome challenges and obstacles to navigate this Wonderland. McKenzie Reece said one of the most daunting tasks facing the actress playing the title character comes from having to remain onstage throughout the entire performance.

Just like the twists Alice finds throughout her adventure, some of the elements of OBU’s production might be a surprise for audiences.

For instance, Bayleigh Platter has been tasked with putting a female spin on the traditionally male role of the White Rabbit. Atop this challenge is the reality that the White Rabbit is a “physically demanding role” requiring a lot of panicked running and jumping.

These kinds of challenges help fulfill a mission of Caron’s that ranks alongside creating young theater lovers.

“One of the goals of the theatre program at (OBU) is to expose our students to a wide variety of performance styles during the course of their studies,” Caron said. “We make sure to produce musicals, classical works, contemporary pieces and, of course, children’s shows. While it is important for us to focus on what is best for the education of our students, as theatre artists it

is as important for us to maintain an audiencecentered perspective.”

For this play, the decisions they make onstage need to come from a place of trying to grab and hold the attention of children in the audience while offering a performance for the adults to enjoy also, said Court Hagarth, who will play the Cheshire Cat. With the prevalence and popularity of handheld entertainment among kids now, Caron said theater still holds a special place among the options people can choose for a good time.

“The unique form of storytelling through theater still thrives,” he said. “People still enjoy the live performance experience.”

Caron also encourages his performers and crew members to keep in mind a higher perspective when approaching their work in this and any other production.

4 Ways to Have a Staycation in Shawnee This Spring Break

pring break is about breaking free from the usual routine and going on adventures, so it’s understandable that your first impulse might be to shell out for plane tickets or fill up the gas tank.

What if we told you that there’s a treasure trove of novel experiences here in Shawnee, Oklahoma?

This year don’t stress about the logistics of travel or the damage to your budget; stay close to home and view it with a new perspective.

How is that possible, you might ask? Here are four ways to get started.

Kick off your staycation by booking yourself a little home-away-from-home at one of our city’s lovely hotels. County Museum puts the interesting history of the county on display. After that, you can finish up your day at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center at 1899 S. Gordon Cooper Drive where you will be moved by the stories of adversity and triumph.

Speaking of CPN, did you know that the tribe has an eagle aviary at 41910 Hardesty Road that is one of only seven like it in the nation? Home to more than a dozen bald eagles and several other bird species, the eagle aviary provides a permanent home for eagles and other birds that have sustained injuries serious enough that they cannot live in the wild, but you’ll note how lively and majestic they are despite this. They were also the first aviary of their kind to successfully release an eagle back into the wild, and you’ll be surprised to see everywhere the bird

has flown. If you’re interested in visiting the aviary, make sure you call at least two weeks in advance. The eagles are in high demand.

If the weather does not cooperate or you’re simply looking for a bit of indoor fun, Shawnee is home to several bowling alleys and arcades. Visit the lanes at Shawnee Bowl at 701 N. Harrison Ave. or FireLake Bowling Center at 40945 Hardesty Road. Both locations accommodate bowlers from beginner to expert levels of skill. Do You Want to Save a Snowman?

A

few weeks ago, we finally got some snowfall around here.

Do you remember?

It wasn’t the predicted snow-pocalypse, but it was a couple of inches or so. More than enough to work with if you happen to like playing in the snow. My family dressed up in some snow gear and dashed outside to have a good old-fashioned snowball fight. Buddy the Elf would have been proud. The kids were a little grumpy after I won, so we settled down and made a really pitiful snowman. Honestly, it was awful. Poor thing. Not even Burl Ives’s magic could fix him. At the same time across town my coworker, Travis Flood, was outside with his family enjoying the snow as well. They made snow angels, threw some snowballs and made one fantastic snowman.

The sun came up the next day and began warming up the ground around this proud and wonderfully made snowman. And then the melting began. Over the next several hours, he slowly leaned toward the sun. This once majestic snowman was now as sad and pitiful as the snowman I helped make the day before.

Neighborhood kiddos came to the yard to play in the melting snow. As they did, one little boy ran over to the leaning snowman in order to put it out of its misery. Before he could get in a swift kick, a brave girl stepped in and said, “Hey! You can’t kick over someone else’s snowman!”

The little boy was startled and regrouped for a second try. So she repeated herself, only much slower this time and with more authority.

“You. Can’t. Kick. Over. Someone. Else’s.

Snowman!”

The boy argued with her. But she stood her ground and then watched as the little boy walked

away.

I know. It’s a silly story. They were just kids playing around, but what impressed me was the bravery of this little girl. She could have looked the other way. She could have ignored what was happening. That would have been the easiest thing to do. People do it all the time, but she knew that the snowman belonged to someone else. It wouldn’t have been right for him to destroy it, even if it was in pitiful shape.

This brave little girl intuitively understood something about justice. Sure, the snowman was an inanimate object, but that’s not how she saw it. This was a snowman, and mistreating a snowman is wrong.

She also understood something about being a friend. This wasn’t just anyone’s snowman. This was her friend Travis’s snowman, and friends don’t look the other way when someone wants to harm their friend’s snowman.

Wouldn’t it be great sometimes to be a kid again? To have such a pure and childlike understanding of right and wrong? To intuitively know that friends and neighbors look out for each other even when it might cost us something?

Too often as adults, we choose not to intervene when we should, because we convince ourselves that “it’s not our problem.” Maybe we tell

ourselves this because doing the right thing is sometimes a scary proposition. It truly might cost us something. A friendship. A job. An important opportunity. Adopting the attitude of “it’s not my problem” as a way of life can never give us the kind of world we want. It can never heal deep-seeded wounds or repair layers of broken trust. Human beings are inextricably connected to each other, whether we like it or not. If we cannot be separated from each other, then we might as well learn to get along. We might as well learn to be friends.

Let’s learn from this amazing little girl’s example. Maybe when we all grow up, we can be like her.

Shawnee Library Celebrates Glenda Pitts’ 39 Years at Retirement Reception

T

hings aren’t going to look quite the same around the Shawnee Public Library with the recent retirement of longtime Children’s Services Manager Glenda Pitts, who served library customers for 39 years.

“They say life will go on, and it will, but life won’t go on as ‘well as,’” said Sen. Ron Sharp, one of many community members who attended a Jan. 4 reception at the library honoring Pitts.

Multiple generations of families have experienced Pitts’s work, whether it be through energetic story times, help finding just the right book for a young reader or just a big smile and “hello” during a library visit.

“I’ve been so blessed to get to work with thousands of kids,” Pitts said. “Sharing books and providing information, it’s been my life.”

Pitts began at the library in 1980 and was named the Children’s Services Manager a year later, which is a position she had held until retirement.

On multiple occasions – including just last year – Pitts was one of the honorees of a Pioneer Library System Staff Award voted on by her peers from throughout the three-county library system.

In addition to reading countless books during literally thousands of story times, she’s been one of the library’s leaders out in the community in reaching out and helping organize participation in events like Shawnee’s parades, the annual International Youth Finals Rodeo in the summer and story times and other activities at Shawnee Mall.

“I’m going to miss her and miss her help and advice a lot,” Branch Manager Peggy Cook said.

Pitts said her upcoming plans comprise of spending more time with family, including her first great-grandchild she now has more time to spoil. She also plans to do some home remodeling projects and travel.

“And I imagine I’ll fill out a Friends of the Library membership sheet,” she said to cheers at her reception.

With National Title in Hand, Show Cattle Family Cherishes Time Spent Together

A

t January’s National Western Stock Show in Denver, Morley Griffith, 14, and her heifer, Mimi, took home not only the grand champion title for Red Angus breeding heifer in the junior category but also the Division V grand championship for the Red Angus heifer open show in which she competed against every age of showman participating.

For Morley, however, there was something missing.

“It was just me and my mom and my dad in Denver whenever we won the junior show,” said Morley, an eighth grader at Dale Middle School. “It didn’t quite feel the same without my sister Hadley (Griffith) there, so we had her get a flight from Oklahoma to meet us in Denver so we could all be together.

“Within three hours of winning the junior title, she was there to celebrate with us.”

That’s how it has been for the Griffiths since they started showing cattle almost 10 years ago. Every member of the family

emphasized how important it is to each of them to participate in the activity together above any success they might have at a show.

At home, they work together in the barn as they sing and dance along with the radio as they wash, groom and feed the show cattle, Hadley said. In the winter, they will even bring board games to the barn to hang out with each other and the cattle.

“To spend the kind of time that we have spent together (showing cattle), it’s really been the joy of my life,” dad Matt Griffith said. “I couldn’t be prouder of my girls not just because of what they’ve been able to accomplish showing livestock … but I’m hopeful that the lessons and the time that

we’ve spent together would be meaningful to them and serve them well in the future.”

Morley was five years old when she followed on the heels and hooves of her older sister Hadley and her show cattle. Through the influence of a babysitter involved in 4-H and an investment in the cattle business, the Griffiths began trying their hand at showing cattle and began learning from other families’ experience to develop their own show skills, they said. Through those connections, they made contacts that got them into the Red Angus breed they have been showing recently.

They learned how to evaluate cattle to select traits that make them fit to show, Morley said.

Much of what they look for in a heifer involves maternal traits that increase the chances of improving and advancing the breed by producing the next generation of cattle.

Along the way, the Griffiths developed bonds with more than just with their show cows.

“It’s really something you love, and you want to be together,” Hadley said. “Getting to do that as a family has made it incredible.”

As she grew older, Morley said she dabbled with other pursuits like archery, but she always came back to what she began with her sister.

“I bounced from several different activities … but I really wasn’t finding what I wanted to do, what I was passionate about until I really got involved more in cattle, and I found my

the success Morley has had this last season, but watching their girls develop skills they can take into every aspect of life has been even more rewarding.

“We’ve watched (Morley) grow as a showman and increase her responsibilities with the show cattle,” Twana said. “As a 14-year-old, she’s really stepped up and matured this year.”

It also translates to other aspects of the Griffith girls’ life.

“With cattle, you work for everything that you get,” Morley said. “That contributes to schoolwork. I try to work as hard as I can to maintain straight As. Whether with 4-H or (Future Farmers of America), it’s being there for my officer team. Giving them 110 percent. I know that if we’re all giving 110 percent, we’re doing the best that we can.”

Along those lines, the reason Hadley came to Denver after the junior show was because she stayed home to follow through with a scholarship interview prior to starting college next year.

Whether its showing cattle or other activities, Morley said she has learned there are some things everyone can keep in mind when pursuing their passion.

“Let your light shine,” she said. “Be yourself.

Don’t try to change for any other people. You’re going to be who you’re going to be, and that’s always going to be enough for the people who matter.”

Shawnee Little Theatre Gets Barbarous with ‘Sweeney Todd’ S

hawnee Little Theatre will slice into 2019 with a production of the dark musical, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Performances at the 1829 N. Airport Drive venue will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8-9 and 1416 with a 2 p.m. performance Feb. 10.

The version of “Sweeney Todd” like the one Shawnee Little Theatre will be performing first premiered on Broadway 40 years ago in the winter of 1979. Famed composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, based his nearly operatic adaptation on a melodrama by Christopher Bond, which had its premiere in 1973.

Even Bond’s version, however, was a retelling of a story that first appeared in the United Kingdom among a series of Victorian fiction pieces known as penny dreadfuls between 1846 and 1847. The character spawned several theatrical adaptations during the following two decades before finding new life in Bond’s play.

The story centers on the title character, who returns to 19th century London under a new name after banishment to Australia at the hands of a corrupt judge who severely mistreated his family. He once again begins to apply his trade as a barber above a meat pie shop owned by the cash-strapped, half-mad Mrs. Lovett. After she learns of Todd’s origins and desire for revenge, the two concoct a gruesome plan to help each accomplish their personal and financial goals and sets them on a path of unintended but unavoidable consequences.

The decision to produce the show came after about 10 years of deliberation, director Bob Wendland said.

“It’s a little bit daring, a little bit outside of the box,” said Wendland, who is taking his 20th turn as director. “It’s something different for Shawnee.”

Adding to the challenge presented to the audience by the story’s dark content is the fact that nearly the entire play is musically driven.

“It’s pretty close to an opera,” Wendland said.

The great emphasis on music is one of the things that Scott Bartley said drew him to the role of the title character. Like the show itself, performing a play like “Sweeney Todd” live in front of an audience is “scary and exciting at the same time.”

“I knew the show really well, so it wasn’t a surprise,” Bartley said. “I just love the music, but it’s probably the most difficult music that I’ve

done for a show.”

Karla Kelly, on the hand, was not as familiar with “Sweeney Todd” going into the role of Mrs. Lovett but brought her experience in fleshing out characters in other shows to put together her performance.

“I think for her, it’s all business,” Kelly said.

“She’s a silly woman.”

Some audience members might be familiar with the 2007 film by the same name starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, but Wendland said the Shawnee Little Theatre production will stay truer to the Sondheim play than the cinematic version helmed by famed veteran of the macabre, director Tim Burton.

“We’re steering away from (the movie),” Bartley said.

Though the plot elements of “Sweeney Todd” are morose, there have been many productions that have been able to draw some dark comical moments in the absurdity of the plan hatched by the two main characters, Bartley said. Finding those nuances in the show make it more layered and compelling for audience members.

“For people who don’t know the show, when

you describe it to them, they’re like ‘Oh my gosh, that sounds horrible,’” Bartley said. “It really is a dark comedy. That’s the fun thing about the character.”

The cast and crew have found ways to make the material fit their needs that depart from the traditional Broadway-style of the play, Wendland said. For instance, the layout of Shawnee Little Theatre has audience members sitting on three sides of the performers rather than simply in front of the stage, which requires them to focus on more than one dimension during the performance. The size of the space also requires a more condensed cast than the nearly 30-person cast required by Broadway-style productions.

“This will be the most intimate version you will ever see,” said Wendland, adding that this could enhance some of the creepy factor of the play. “That’s the whole goal.”

Get Some Sleep for Your Heart’s Sake

W

e all know how crummy we feel after a bad night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can leave you feeling sluggish, in a foul mood and struggling to stay focused on daily tasks. Troy Norred, MD, Cardiologist for SSM Health Medical Group, explained how poor sleep quality also has real consequences for your heart.

Sleep is important for overall heart health. It allows our bodies the chance to rest and relax, allow our heart rates to decrease and allow our blood pressures to decrease. That natural rhythm is helpful to the heart overall.

Deep sleep allows your heart rate to decrease, allowing for the tone your heart needs in order to provide its regulatory mechanism. It also allows your blood pressure to decrease and improves your mood and overall tone of your body.

One bad night of sleep won’t hurt, though, right?

Wrong. The effects of poor sleep are almost immediate.

You’ll notice – even as a healthy individual – if you don’t get a good night’s sleep, the next day you don’t feel good. You’re tired. You’re fatigued. Your body is constantly trying to catch up. When it comes to your heart, if you don’t get that good sleep the night before, your heart rates tend to be higher. Your blood pressure tends to be higher. You have an immediate effect after a poor night’s sleep.

If poor sleep becomes habitual, you’ll see the daily effects become long-term, leading to a higher risk of cardiac rhythm disorders, higher heart rates, high blood pressure and an increased risk for coronary artery disease.

In fact, recent large-scale studies have proven a direct correlation between sleep and long-term risk of developing coronary artery disease. Other studies – including a 2011 large scale study by the American Heart Association – show that the regulation of blood pressure really affects how a person does with hypertension long-term.

So, how much sleep do you really need?

The truth is that the answer isn’t the same for every person. However, we do know that somewhere between seven to nine hours of sleep per night is the opti-

mal amount of sleep.

Studies show that getting fewer than six hours of sleep at night contributes to health issues, including high blood pressure, coronary disease, stroke risk and diabetes. But we’ve also seen in studies, including the Nurses’ Health study, that when someone sleeps more than 11 hours per day that can be detrimental to your health as well.

Sometimes getting “enough” sleep is easier said than done. Luckily, Dr. Norred has advice on creating a better daily routine to get your body ready for sleep.

One of the most important things a cardiologist will tell you on a daily basis is the importance of exercise. Not only does it improve your heart’s overall health, but it will also improve your sleep.

In addition to helping regulate your body’s tone, exercise increases your heart rates and blood pressure, which allows your body to experience the highs and lows it needs for sleep. Yet, you should be careful about how you time your daily exercise, Dr. Norred said. For some people, intense aerobic activity right before bed can make it harder for your body to calm itself to sleep.

You should also work to create a nightly routine that prepares your mind and body for rest. Dr. Norred suggested some of the following evening rituals: • Start turning away from screens a few hours before you intend to sleep. Smart phones, tablets and televisions can greatly limit sleep and sleep quality.

• Reduce your caffeine intake. Some people should end caffeine by early afternoon, but others may need to stop their caffeine intake earlier or later. Figure out what works best for you.

• Read, meditate or do yoga. Find a calm, relaxing activity to help your mind and body wind down.

At the end of the day, remember that it’s more than just a break from the busyness of life; deep, restorative sleep is healthy.

City Streets: What’s in a Name?

S

hawnee citizens likely give little thought to how the streets they drive down were named, but many older ones have historical beginnings.

In the 1891 land run into what is now Pottawatomie County, J.T. Farrall staked his claim just north of the river with the idea of building a town. The street and park there are named in his honor. Some years ago, the state highway department connected Farrall Street with Harrison Street to create the “loop” citizens are now familiar with.

Miss Etta Ray, who soon married Henry Beard, was another claimant that day. The family donated part of their claim, which is now Woodland Park. Beard Street runs north and south almost the full length of Shawnee.

Streets from the river were first called by numbers, but then 8th Street became Main Street with 9th, 10th and 11th continuing to U.S. Highway 270, or Highland Street as we now refer to it. Broadway was a logical name for any town, and Market began where there were several retail establishments.

Many of the streets labeled those first years were chosen by real estate developers. Douglas was named for banker H.T. Douglas and Bentley was named for town trustee Martin Bentley.

Homes along Hobson Street were built by Henry Hobson. J.J. Bell was an early builder and contractor. Wilson was named for a doctor and Burns for a saloon owner.

The Patchin Brothers were in real estate, and J.M. Remington owned a music house and drug store. Members of the Mead(e) family were farmers, business owners and teachers. Hayes was named for Z. Hayes, the landowner where the street was built. Dr. J.H. Scott had a street named in his honor.

Aydelotte was for mayor and businessman, James M. Aydelotte, Whittaker was named for Thomas Whittaker, who donated some of his land where he hoped the city hospital would be built. Whittaker’s furniture business partner, John Draper, was honored with Draper Street.

Chapman was for prominent lawyer M.M. Chapman. Wood Street was for Judge J.H. Wood, one of the partners in the development of a housing area north of St. Benedict’s church. Benedict Street was a logical designation running west of the Catholic church property.

Louisa Street was first known by that name, which some assume was a developer’s wife. It was changed briefly to University when it was thought Oklahoma Baptist University would be

built on that street far north. It eventually reverted to the original designation.

Many streets were named for women. Elizabeth is reportedly named for a Shawnee pioneer, and Rosa is thought to be for a woman in the wealthy Cammack family, for which another street is named. Bonita, Ruth, Georgia, Ada, Florence, Anna, Marie and Margaret were other names assumed to be honoring family members, but that history has been lost.

Some streets were designated for presidents, including Harrison, Cleveland, Washington, Roosevelt, McKinley, Lincoln and Jefferson. Other national figures also received mention, including (Paul L.) Dunbar, (Benjamin) Franklin, (Adm. George) Dewey and (William Jennings) Bryan.

Kennedy Street, site of today’s Shawnee High School, was not named for the president but was given the name years before. Records indicate it was likely for a local businessman.

MacArthur Street was known as North Street on the far edge of Shawnee until after World War II, and it was changed to honor Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Midland Street was the end of the trolley that

extended north on Broadway and turned west to OBU. Midland was built wider to accommodate the tracks.

Kickapoo was the obvious choice for the designation line of Kickapoo tribal land. Other streets that have names from Native American heritage include Chickasaw, Mohican, Osage, Apache, Arapaho, Pontotoc, Mojave, Kiowa and Seneca.

There are also those named for states like California, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Minnesota and Oklahoma and others named for cities and towns, such as Philadelphia, Chicago, Shawnee and St. Louis.

Most modern street names in Shawnee are less likely to be titled for a person, but developers continue to give new streets their names. When the addition to the east side of Shawnee was built in the mid-1900s, the street names were selected from the Thompson family: Rickey, Sherry, Mark and Laverne. Family names continued east of there with Charles, Monroe, Rose and Carol.

Volleyball Tournament Set Feb. 9 to Help Fund Overcomers Addiction Recovery Groups

A

ddiction affects people from all walks of life. Traits like gender, education, income and familial stability don’t appear to indicate any inherent determining factors. For this reason, outreach to recovering addicts also needs to be widespread.

That’s where the Shawnee Overcomers groups are working to make an impact.

Overcomers Outreach is an international network of Christ-centered 12-step support groups.

They minister to individuals, their families and loved ones who suffer from the consequences of any addictive behavior. They exist to serve as a bridge between traditional 12-step recovery groups and churches of all denominations. Members recover together as they meet to study the Bible. Their ministry motto is to be “all-welcoming, regardless of age, race, lifestyle, background or belief.”

Joey Sheffield is a journeyman electrician for PTW Energy Services, a father of four and a recovering addict. He’s also a leader and chairperson with the local Overcomers chapter. He participates in the Pottawatomie County Drug Court program and is a client at Gateway to Prevention & Recovery. He’s seen the damage caused by addiction but is determined not only to keep his life on track but to help others recover as well.

“I’m a success story,” he said. “That’s why I want to give back what was given to me. Overcomers isn’t only for drug addicts; we’re here for people suffering from all types of addictions and those who are close to people with addictions.

What we’re trying to do is reach out to our community and let them know we’re here to help.”

Undertaking that mission can be daunting sometimes. Overcomers groups don’t receive funding from any government or private entity.

Money raised for outreach is earned through fundraisers like an upcoming volleyball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9 at C3 Cross Connection Church at 329 N. Pesotum.

“We’re trying to get out in the community and reach youth,” Sheffield said. “Fundraisers like car washes, games and cookouts are all intended so we can give back and help save lives.”

Interested volleyball teams must register by 5 p.m. on tournament day. Entry fees are $25 per team, and admission is $1 at the door for spectators. Teams can consist of any six men or women, and the format is single elimination. There will also be a concession stand. Half of all proceeds will go back to Overcomers outreach with the remaining funds going to the winning team.

Shawnee Fire Department, REACT, Gateway and Life Church in order to get the community back together as a whole,” Sheffield said. “In addiction, sometimes we can’t reach out to the police, fire department or REACT for fear of what may end up happening. In reality, though, one of them may save our lives. It’s also a way for us to show everyone that we do recover, and in recovery you finally realize that first responders aren’t what we thought they were when we were in addiction.

They are here to help us.”

Overcomers groups meet in a variety of Shawnee locations. There are gatherings every night of the week except Wednesdays.

C3 hosts meetings at 7 p.m. on Mondays, Thursday and Fridays and at 5 p.m. on Sundays.

New Life Church at 1231 E. 10th holds gatherings at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Two other locations – Bethel Acres Assembly at 18509 Bethel Road and Shawnee Rescue Mission at 506 S. Beard – serve free meals before their meetings. The Bethel get-togethers take place 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays, and the ones at Shawnee Rescue Mission take place 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

One unique aspect of the local Overcomers groups is that they aren’t led by professional counselors. Instead, those who are in recovery themselves or their family members do the leading.

“Overcomers support group is helping many in our community find support, encouragement and fellowship,” said Kellie Steele, a longtime commu-

nity member who has worked with those in need of assistance. “Those who are trying to overcome adversity in life will discover warm and caring individuals who want to walk alongside one another with the common goals of overcoming old habits and replacing them with positive, healthy habits in a faith-based setting.”

Sheffield and others have seen the difference Overcomers can make.

“We have success stories every day,” Sheffield said. “We get to watch people come in, get clean and have the ‘gray’ go out of their faces. Their cheeks are no longer sunk in. They get their kids back and their lives back on track, and sometimes we’re blessed to be able to teach them a little bit about the Lord.

“What we’re trying to do is to reach out and let people know we’re here, and they don’t have to be alone as they attempt to recover. We’d also like to remove the stigma that we as addicts had toward the police and other first responders. We want to reach out to them as needed. None of us can do it alone.”
