Value v. Price I read an article not long ago detailing the difference between being frugal and being cheap. One of the primary differences was that someone being frugal will look for the greater value while a cheapskate simply seeks out the lowest price. I agree this is an important differentiation.

To be the wisest steward with one’s resources, I believe it is most important to seek out the best balance between quality and price – this is where you will find the best value for your dollar. In many cases, the item with the lowest price also has a lower quality – and in places where this matters, you may end up paying more in the long run.

The Gift of Health Are you looking for a gift idea to give that special someone that shows how much you really care? If so, then jumpstart 2017 by giving the gift of health this holiday season. Whether helping a New Year’s resolution succeed or encouraging an existing life style, your loved one will appreciate your support. The gift of health is so much more than just another present under the tree. What you’re saying is, “I support what you are doing and I want to help.” Exercise clothes are always fun and you can never have too many.

Walking into the gym, feeling good in what you are wearing, helps with confidence. A new pair of exercise shoes can be as important as a workout partner. A good pair of shoes provides much-needed support and helps keep the back, knees, hips and feet in good condition whether running, taking an exercise class, or lifting weights. A gift certificate to download music can really help keep a person motivated. Listening to your favorite tune somehow makes things more enjoyable. Accessories like ear phones, socks, water bottle, shaker bottle, cooling towel, yoga mat, weight lifting gloves or a belt are all ideal. Fun technology like GPS watches or smart watches that track your calorie burn will surely have your loved one out getting some extra steps. At Anytime Fitness, you can buy tanks, water bottles, exercise class punch cards, healthy snack bars, energy supplements or better yet – the gift of a gym membership or personal trainer. Whatever you decide to do this year, you can’t go wrong with any of these suggestions. And while it may be true that it’s the thought that counts, why not make the gift count too. After opening gifts on Christmas morning, everyone can enjoy the waffle recipe found below.

In other words, if you’re buying a box of cereal, you can probably opt for the cheapest box and not lose anything in the long run. However, if you are buying a watch, the cheapest option may stop working within a week, leaving you with the cost of replacing your items more quickly than you might have if you’d spent a little more money on a lot more quality.

Whole Wheat Waffles

What you’re looking for is a high-quality item at the lowest price for that quality. As such, you’ll need to keep in mind that sometimes, if you’re looking at clothing, for example, you may need to stray from the clearance rack and find the right style for you (on sale, preferably), even if it costs a little more. The more you really love something, the more you will use it and the better value you will have for your dollar. Likewise, the better quality an item, the more usage it will withstand and the better value you will have for your dollar.

As you’re looking to pinch pennies, remember to keep in mind the long-run cost.

Who doesn’t love fresh, homemade waffles in the morning?! If you find you don’t have time to make the waffle mix the morning of, you can always make your mix the night before. By serving these with fruit, light maple syrup, or peanut butter and a couple of scrambled eggs, you will have a complete, balanced, and very tasty breakfast. Let everyone top their waffles with fruit of choice and dig in!

Ingredients:

2 cups packaged organic whole wheat pancake/waffle mix ½ ripe banana 1 egg 2 egg whites

½ cup unsweetened applesauce 1 Tbsp vanilla extract 1 ½ cup unsweetened almond milk Nonstick cooking spray

Directions: Preheat waffle iron and spray with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl, mash the banana until smooth. Slightly beat the egg and egg whites together and add to banana. Add applesauce, vanilla and milk to bowl and stir until completely blended. Add the waffle mix to the bowl and mix until all lumps are gone. Pour ½ cup of waffle mix into the waffle iron and cook until desired doneness.

The Best Deals in Town You may remember hearing the saying, “Every little bit helps” and “A penny saved is a penny earned.” That certainly is true when it comes to where we spend our money and during the Christmas shopping season, those pennies can add up quickly. Spending here means investing here as 3 cents on every dollar is reinvested in our community. A portion of our sales tax dollars keeps our city up and running, pays for capital and street improvements, economic development, and our police and fire departments.

Consider the economic impact you make by supporting local businesses. Business owners and their employees live here and shop here, adding to the sales tax collections and property tax income which helps fund our schools. Keeping their doors open is good for everyone.

The Shawnee Outlook is a great guide to local businesses whose goods and services make us partners in bettering our community. If we’re shopping locally, we’re all paying taxes and buying so much more than Christmas gifts. We’re buying better roads, amenities like Shawnee Splash, clean water, and public safety. Our dollars spent here help keep people in jobs, feed their families, and work toward a stronger future. A sale is a good deal, but spending our money here is the best deal because it pays us back in so many ways.

There’s room for applause. According to the City of Shawnee’s FY 2015-2016 budget, sales tax has shown a slight increase over the last three years. Justin Erickson, city manager, credits more spending to the increase in shopping options available.

“The City has been very fortunate and despite cutbacks in other cities in the State, we are doing okay amidst the statewide economic downturn. I think this is because we have increased commercial/retail offerings in the City in the last few years and have been able to capture more dollars in Shawnee. The Shawnee Marketplace development and growth at the Shawnee Mall has helped tremendously and there have been many local businesses and smaller stores opening, too,” said Erickson.

Downtown is looking up as well with new businesses moving in during October and November. All construction projects are expected to be concluded by late this month or early January.

Speaking of local investment, December is the last month to make tax-deductible donations in your community. The Shawnee Community Foundation makes financial donations to schools easy. Local human services agencies are going a long way to reduce poverty by addressing factors which keep people impoverished such as addiction, joblessness, and life skills. Consider making a last-minute contribution to one of the dozens of nonprofit organizations like the Salvation Army, Community Renewal, United Way, and the Shawnee Education Foundation; there are too many to list in this letter.

Let’s spend and give this year like we mean it.

Shawnee’s Cold War Era by: Mindy Ragan Wood

The fall of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991 marked the final end to the Cold War, erasing the fear of a nuclear conflict for Americans and Europeans. The Cold War height was during the 1950s and by 1965, an estimated 200,000 fallout shelters waited patiently for war beneath homes, municipalities, and state and federal government buildings.

In Pottawatomie County, there could be as many as 112, according to a 1987 fallout shelter report provided by the City of Shawnee Emergency Management. It’s likely that number is lower, but no one is sure how many exist. Over the years, these shelters may have been removed, repurposed, or fallen into disrepair.

Gino and Angela Hodges’ fallout shelter isn’t one of them. The 2,500 sq. ft. facility is a tunnel that runs between their home and their neighbor’s home on E. Highland in Harbour Estates. Both homes used to be owned

by W. Elmer Harber, for whom the housing addition was later named.

The Hodges looked into the history of the home before they purchased it and discovered that Harber was a multi-millionaire banker and oilman who reportedly rubbed shoulders with Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt

They believe Harber built the fallout shelter tunnel in 1955, at the height of nuclear war fears so the Harbers, their family and friends could take cover. “He built it to survive a nuclear attack on Tinker Airforce Base,” said Gino Hodges.

as a former US. Airforce veteran, he was trained in nuclear, biological, and chemical defense procedures (NBC). When he looked at the shelter before purchasing the home, he was impressed. It had everything.

“It’s probably one of the most sophisticated civilian fallout bomb shelters I’ve ever seen. It’s almost military grade,” said Hodges. “It’s a level two shelter, so it could sustain his family and friends for 21 days; 21 days because that was the recommended length of time to remain in shelter under standard fallout conditions at that time. That’s before they started inventing more dirty bombs.”

The tunnel features two full bathrooms, a full kitchen complete with stove, sink, refrigerator, cabinets and cooking utensils. Beds and chairs throughout the shelter are still there. There’s even a dehumidifier and a crank attached to a manual override if the electricity failed.

Air filters provided intake for a filtered air over-pressurized system and blast vents to protect from the pressure wave of nuclear detonation. “The reason why we over-pressurize the bomb shelters is because that is how you prevent particulate matter from entering. That particulate matter could be biological agents, chemical agents, or radioactive fallout,” said Hodges.

During the 1950s Cold War scare, shelters may have been built because it was also a time when concrete was more accessible and affordable. The National Highway System (interstate highways) was being built, so concrete was plentiful.

In the last year, talk of a new Cold War has circulated across media outlets.

In February, Bloomberg reported that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced “his country is in a Cold War with the U.S. and its allies” during Syrian tensions. Reuters reported in April that Russian jets made simulated attack passes near a U.S. destroyer in the Baltic Sea, touted by U.S. military officials as “one of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory.”

During Hodges 22-year military career, he paid attention to simulated air cruise missile launches directed at the U.S. “When I was on active duty, they used to do that frequently because the Soviet Union was being the Soviet Union. After the collapse, it pretty much ceased because they were in such a state of disarray that there was no active effective military to go against us.

However, it’s on the rise again. In the last seven months, there have been simulated air launch cruise missile attacks against the United States from Russia,” he said.

While the debate about a new Cold War continues for politicians and news media, it was a chilling fear in Shawnee during the real Cold War of the 1950s and 60s. There were 18 fallout shelters under buildings on Main Street alone.

Multiple shelters were listed at SGU, OBU, and the Shawnee Milling Company.

As to the Hodges, they’re fixing up their fallout shelter, if for no other reason than to preserve its historic integrity.

Kids Say the BEST things Shawnee 4th graders wrote to us about their favorite Christmas traditions, what they think their parents should give each other for Christmas, and we found out just what they do with all those presents they don’t like!

Q. What is your favorite Christmas tradition?

A. Kalieo: “Watching movies with my family.” A. Boston: “When my family and me are in pj’s and open the presents.” A. Christian: “Making a Christmas tree.” A. Lilli: “My dad reading the story of when Jesus is born.” A. Olivia: “Putting candy canes in the front yard.” A. Sophia: “On Christmas my favorite part is giving presents to the poor.”

Q. What would you do with a gift you don’t like or didn’t want? Give us some advice.

A. Ady: “Pretend I like it, and keep it in my closet.” A. Chicago: “I gave it to a kid who did not get a present.” A. Dace: “Give it to your younger sibling.” A. Ajay: “I give it to charity.” A. Olivia: “I would keep it because it would make Santa sad.” A. Wyatt: “Give it to a kid who doesn’t get a lot.”

Q. Do you think you’ve been good enough to be on Santa’s list this year. If not, why?

A. Mason: “I don’t know, because I argue a lot and be mean to my baby cousins and my brother.” A. Aiden: “Yes. I have been doing my chores every day.” A. Dayton: “No because I have been bad this year.” A. Emerson: “I like to think my grades are good and so is my behavior, so I think yes.” A. Ady: “Yes because I haven’t been grounded at all and I have been good in school.”

Q. What should your parents get each other for Christmas?

A. Ady: “My dad should get my mom diamonds, and my mom should get my dad fishing stuff.” A. Aiden: “They should go on a date.” A. Wyatt: “A kiss under the mistletoe.” A. Cyrus: “More respect.”

Q. When did you stop believing in Santa and why?

A. Annyla: “Last year, because my brother told me.” A. Cooper: “He’s fake because he can’t see you when you’re sleeping.”

A. Olivia: “When I saw my parents wrapping presents in Santa paper.” A. Whitney: “When I was six and my uncle told me he was not real.” A. Carson: “Well, I wasn’t sure about it, but as I got older, it was more obvious.”

To our surprise, only a few children said opening gifts was their favorite Christmas tradition. Nearly all of the student letters we read said they still believed in Santa, but as you can see there are a few skeptics. Most children believed they had been good and several said they’d never received a gift they didn’t want. We hope you enjoy their answers and we hope you’ll ask the kids in your life more questions about Christmas.

Smart Driving Made Simple A difficult driving season is upon us. Mall and store parking lots are jammed with holiday shoppers. Many families are hitting the road to spend time with relatives. Add to those a mix of fewer daylight hours, dicey weather conditions, and the alcohol served at some festive functions, and driving dangers seem to abound. What can locals do to make themselves safer on the roads this holiday season and into the new year? As it turns out, help is just a phone call away.

AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, has volunteers nationwide who facilitate their Smart Driving Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety. The six-hour class is intended for ALL drivers, age 16 and up, said Shawnee volunteer Albert Brase. He’s been leading courses here for about three years and would love to see participation in the program grow.

The course has no tests, is completed in just one day, and participants do not have to be AARP members to take part. The cost is minimal ($15 for members, $20 for nonmembers), but the benefits can be great. “By law in the state of Oklahoma, participants who complete the course can be entitled to a reduction in their insurance rates for three years,” Brase said. “They’ll receive a certificate to present to their insurance agent, and most discounts are between five and ten percent.” After the three-year period, participants can repeat the course to renew the discount if they wish. Class members also receive a book to keep for review.

An online version of the course is also available through AARP, at a slightly higher cost, but insurance companies don’t always honor that version with the discount. The classes are also not intended to replace a driver’s education course, as the AARP version does not include actual driving time with an instructor.

AARP has been involved in driver-improvement education since 1969 when volunteers began teaching the Defensive Driving Course of the National Safety Council. The organization created a program specifically for older drivers in 1979, then known as “55 ALIVE”. Online courses were added in 2006, and the current course was launched for all drivers in 2014 based on driver safety and transportation research. According to self-assessments administered after the course, 97 percent of drivers reported that they changed at least one key driving behavior as a result of what they had learned.

Cooper Technology Center on Saturdays. He’s also conducted classes for independent insurance agents and their clients in neighboring towns.

Brase said he enjoys it most when class members take an active part in the discussions. “It should be a learning experience for everyone involved,” he said.

Key components in the lessons are driver awareness and being proactive. “A driver’s only job – period – is to drive that car. Drivers should pull over to deal with distractions, which certainly aren’t limited to cell phones. A distraction can be the person beside you who’s talking too much or disruptive children in the back. Your whole objective as a driver is to be aware of what’s around you and get from point A to point B as safely as you can.”

headlights on day and night better ensures others see your vehicle. He urged drivers to use extra care when backing up and to keep medications in the car so first responders can administer them should an accident occur.

Brase said that civic and church organizations are welcome to host a class of their own. He’ll be ready to teach if they do. “I need 3-4 weeks’ notice, and they’ll need to supply a DVD player and TV,” he said. Class members will also need to bring a pen or pencil, their drivers license, their AARP card if they have one, and a lunch. Shawnee residents honored at AARP event In early October, the AARP held its eighth annual Oklahoma Indian Elders in Oklahoma City with two Citizen Potawatomi Nation members amongst those honored. The awards banquet has become a wellknown event in Oklahoma’s Indian Country, with the AARP recognizing the achievements of tribal elders from the state’s 39 tribal nations.

For many, the recognition of their work on behalf of their tribe or Native American issues comes later than it should have. Such is the case for one Citizen Potawatomi honored at the 2016 event, Shawnee, Oklahoma’s Beverly Hughes.

Beverly Hughes is a well-known elder in the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, whose work for the tribe in the early 1970s played an integral part in the development of the tribe’s presence today. Elected in 1970 to what was then called the Citizen Band of Potawatomi Indians’ office of secretary-treasurer, Hughes’ primary work aside from serving on the tribe’s 5-person business committee was to gather contact information for tribal members’ in order to inform them of per-capita payments from the federal government.

To accomplish this, Hughes secured a $25,000 federal grant to fund the outreach effort. The result of this was the publishing of the very first edition of the Hownikan, the first tribal newspaper.

“All I was trying to do was give people an update on what we were doing and what services provided,” explained Hughes in a 2013 interview with the Hownikan. “It seemed pretty popular, so from then on we tried to produce it every quarter to keep our members informed.”

Today, the tribal paper has a print circulation of more than 15,000, reaching out to CPN members across the globe.

Hughes also played a vital role in developing the tribe’s first seal and codifying the correct spelling of the tribe with officials at the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, who had erroneously spelled it “Pottawatomie” instead of the proper “Potawatomi.”

“They said they were going to spell it the same as the county,” recalled Hughes, “but I told them that we were separate from the county. We were an entity

Hughes’ efforts on behalf of the tribe – many of which took place prior to the landmark 1975 Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act – were integral in putting what became known as Citizen Potawatomi Nation onto the path of economic and cultural sustainability. If not for the dedication and work of elders like her, who fostered a sense of Potawatomi pride and community in the most challenging of times, the Nation would not be what it is today.

Also honored was current CPN Vice-Chairman Linda Capps, also of Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Vice-Chairman Capps’ impact is far-reaching into Indian Country due to her impact on the lives of countless students as a teacher and Indian Education Director at Tecumseh Public Schools. In addition to her educational experience, she has served as vice-chairman since 1990.

During her tenure the tribe has increased its assets at an incredible pace and today is the largest employer in Pottawatomie County. She was honored also

for her drive in search of new opportunities that will improve the quality of life for her people in the surrounding communities.

A testament to her dedication to the community came in March 2016 when she was honored with the prestigious Gordon Richard’s Sr. Service award by the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce for her more than decade-long commitment to the community.

Born in the community of Harrah, Oklahoma, Capps began her professional career as a business teacher at Dover Public Schools. In 1977, she moved to Tecumseh Public Schools, where for seven years she taught business and served as the district’s Indian education director. She also served for a decade at the Oklahoma Bid Assistance Program and as an adult education instructor at Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She has served on the board of directors of numerous institutions, including the Federal Reserve Bank branch of Oklahoma City, Rural Enterprises of Oklahoma, Inc., Gordon Cooper Technology Center Foundation, the Foundation Board for Seminole State College and First National Bank and Trust Co., the largest tribally-owned bank in the United States.

Sensitive Santa’s Special Magic by: Mindy Ragan Wood

Santa makes room in his heart for all children, and that includes little ones with special challenges. The Shawnee Mall let Santa and his helpers stop in to make sure every child gets a chance to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

Knowing these children need a little extra care, the Shawnee Mall made a special time for families to see Santa on December 4. With reduced lighting, less sound, and the ability to wait without standing in line, children with sensory and movement differences were able to approach Santa without environmental stress. In particular, children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum disorders can be overstimulated due to extremely sensitive hearing and vision.

Shawnee Mall Marketing Director, Mindy Palmer, explained. “There’s more seating. They have full run of the court. The overhead lights are off. Instead of standing in line, parents receive a number and get an index card. They can write if their child is nonverbal or has some other need. Santa gets the card before he sees the child.”

Volunteers assisted with the event, including members of Autism Shawnee. Kena Utter of Autism Shawnee said Sensitive Santa helped her son enjoy his visit. “I slipped Santa a note about a few things he liked to get him to warm up to him. He spent as long as he needed with him while also vis18

iting with siblings! I was greatly impressed. Snacks and crafts were also stress free and it was a great experience. Pictures were adorable!”

Kerry Ingersoll said, “It was our first picture with Santa without tears and a red face.”

Santa can be scary for young children, but especially sensitive children who face a world that doesn’t make sense to them. Palmer said last year she had parents from Kansas and Arkansas and one mother in particular was shocked. She was skeptical but hopeful as her son relied on an iPad while in public.

“As soon as he heard Santa say, ‘Ho,ho,ho,’ he dropped the iPad and ran to him,” said Palmer.

Santa’s Chief Executive Elf (CEE), Kristin, said another mother brought her son and told them he wouldn’t hug or talk to Santa. “I said, ‘Well, we’ll go at his pace.’ I was playing with him and that boy bee-lined to Santa and hugged him. She was on the floor, shocked to see that. She was crying, but it was tears of joy.”

Santa agreed to talk to the Shawnee Outlook and tell us a few of his secrets. “Each child has their own special gifts, and that is what we try to recognize and appreciate.”

During this time with sensitive children, Santa follows the child. Some sit on his lap, some beside him. Some chose to sit or lay on the floor. Others

communicate while doing an activity like reading or coloring with Santa.

“The Santa team sees all children as equally special. All children show their excitement in different ways. Maybe this is the magic of Christmas!” he exclaimed.

He also loves to see overjoyed parents who, in some cases, have never felt comfortable bringing their child to him before. “Parents enjoy seeing their children enjoy the magic of Christmas as much as the children do. For the Santa team, this is a rewarding experience. It is our goal to make these magical moments as special for the parents as the children.”

In a world divided by prejudice, politics, and misunderstanding, Santa hopes the world can get better starting with the children who will be the future. “Santa loves all children unconditionally.

I love to see each child’s special gifts and talents.

Our hope is that other children will see that it is okay for them to love all children like we do.”

SHAWNEE HISTORY

Pearl Harbor: Looking Back Seventy-five years ago, Mrs. Bernice Coffey was anxious for her youngest son, Harrell King Mattox, who was stationed with the Army Air Corps at Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

News of the Japanese bombing had reached Shawnee and she was hoping her boy was safe.

It took at least four days to get an airmail letter so she wouldn’t hear from him for a while.

And she wasn’t even sure he was still in Hawaii.

A few weeks earlier he had written that his unit was to move somewhere into another area of the Pacific.

Mrs. Coffey and her daughter, Norma Jean, 11-years-old, lived at 716 N. Kickapoo where she had a beauty shop, the Castilian. Her elderly mother, Susan King, also lived at the home. Mrs. Coffey’s husband, Robie Mattox, manager of the Blue Front Grocery, had died about ten years earlier and her eldest son, Winfred, was a student at Ouachita College in Arkansas. She was married briefly to Shelby Coffey, a railroad employee.

Harrell King Mattox was a 1939 graduate of Shawnee High School where he played baseball and worked as a delivery boy at Central Drug #2, just up Kickapoo Street. Soon after graduation he convinced his mother to agree to let him enlist in the army air corps. Family members said she wasn’t happy to see her son leave but he had his heart set on the adventure.

On top of the national news, December 7, 1941, was already a sad day for the family. Mrs. Coffey’s 82 year old mother passed away late that evening. But three days later, as the family prepared to go to Poteau for the grandmother’s funeral, the dreaded telegram arrived: “The Secretary of War desires me to express his deepest regret that your son Harrel N. Matton (sic) was

killed in action in defense of his country at Hickam Field on Dec Seventh . . .”

A few days later Christmas presents arrived that he had sent before his death. They included Hawaiian flavored items including a kimono for his mother and grass skirt for his little sister.

Harrell also sent a menu of what the troops at Hickam Field were to have for Christmas dinner.

Mattox’s body was not returned until 1947 and he was buried at Resthaven Cemetery.

In 1990, his sister Norma, happened to catch a CBS special, “World War II: Remember Pearl Harbor.” One of the veterans on the show, Mor-

ton Roth, described that day, mentioned Harrell Mattox and how he died. Norma immediately began an effort to correspond with the fellow soldier who then put her in touch with others who knew her brother.

The men had many stories to tell her about her Harrell, who they called “Lefty” because he batted left-handed and remembered his job was to pack parachutes. Roth had been with Mattox when he died. After several explosions that Sunday morning they ran toward the hangars to unlock them. Another explosion rocked the area and Roth was knocked unconscious.

When he came to Harrell King Mattox was lying beside him and had been killed.

Mattox was not the only Shawnee native in Hawaii 75 years ago, but he was the only one to lose his life. Also, stationed in the islands were Bill Anderson, Harold Arnold, Leroy Bolwing, Jack Caldwell, Roby Davis, Bruce Day, James Goodwon, William Ingraham, Jack Johnson, Frank Knipe, John Madden, Raymond Norton, Gus Pecore, Ralph Philley, Kenneth Ritchie, Hurchel Teeples and Russell Wilkerson. Wayne Fogelstron was wounded that day aboard a battleship.

Mattox was rewarded for his heroism on that famous day in American history. He was awarded a Purple Heart and the 1942 Caldron, Shawnee High School yearbook, was dedicated to his memory. The local American Legion post was named in his honor, Gill-Matrox Post No. 16. (Bernard Gill was the first local soldier lost in World War I).

Two years later, Mattox’ brother Winfred, died during army training at a camp in Kansas.

He left behind a wife and daughter as well as his sister and a mother who gave both her sons.

Baylee Hall Returns from Mexico

Bethel High School junior, Baylee Hall, returned from Mexico last month where she performed dance, cheer, and tumbling routines for ONP World’s Perfect cheer and dance competitions. After winning numerous world titles in the World’s Perfect Athlete competition last summer in Florida, she was invited by ONP to appear as a celebrity performer.

Kelly Beck, Hall’s coach at Oklahoma Cheer Explosion in Seminole, said, “When you see her on the mat, you understand. She has an energy about her that comes out. It just draws people to her.”

It was red-carpet treatment for Hall and her parents who accompanied her on the trip. ONP paid for all their travelling expenses including meals and provided a chauffeur who escorted them to events and tourism destinations.

At least 300 teams and 4,500 athletes gathered for Mexico’s competitions. Hall joined a select group of athletes from prestigious gyms including the distinguished California Lady Bullets and Florida’s Top Gun. “These are huge industry, top notch gyms,” said Beck. “They put in 10-12 hours a week. We can’t put in that kind of time, so it shows how much talent she has. It’s what I call ‘small town girl, big town talent.’”

Aonisty Parks, her instructor at Dream Catcher’s Dance Studio in Shawnee has enjoyed watching her grow. “She’s great, a hard worker,” said Parks. “She’s just your go-to girl and I’m not surprised to see her success. I knew she was going to be fabulous; I knew she was going to be a stunner.”

Hall’s success started in Oklahoma when she won State Perfect Grand Champion, the award earned by an athlete who excels in the competition’s overall category. With that bid, Hall went to Delray Beach this summer for the World’s Perfect Athlete. There she won World’s Perfect Athlete, Dancer, Cheer, Tumbler, Duo, Solo Only, Leaper, and Turner.

At Delray Beach, Hall was part of a select few who participated in a photo shoot and a commercial promoting the competitions. Someone else noticed her, too. Her mother Terri Hall was stunned when a local athletics photographer offered Baylee a free photo shoot valued at $800.

“He ran us all over Florida, took hundreds of gorgeous pictures. It was insane,” said Terri Hall. Eric Anderson of Athletes in Focus took the photos.

“She’s an amazing athlete and a beautiful young lady,” said Anderson.

formance. “She only gave three scholarships that day and told me,” said Terri, “have her come try out and we’ll talk grades. I told her she’s an A student and on the honor roll and she told me she could definitely do more.”

It has been a dizzying year for Baylee, but it was Mexico she referred to most. She and her fellow U.S. athletes performed during intermissions. Baylee performed solo dance and cheer routines in addition to partner stunting with Top Gun and Lady Bullets.

They were regarded as celebrities, with people rushing up to them and saying, ‘photo’ while snapping pictures. Several were fascinated by Baylee’s blue eyes and even went so far as to put their hands over eyes and exclaiming comments she couldn’t understand. “It was crazy. We were not used to that. Everyone was so nice. It was really cool.”

moved at the poverty she saw while touring destinations. “It really puts life in perspective,” she said.

Shawnee Square Eights! Open Lessons Shawnee Square Eights dancing club will offer lessons to the public starting January 10. Square dancing dates back to the 1860’s from line or contra dancing and evolved to the style it is known for today. Dancers join a square and perform dance moves based on what a “caller” calls out during the song.

All ages are welcome. Club President, Linda Spaugy, said their youngest member is nine and their oldest is 87, with every age range in between on the floor. Children must be accompanied by an adult. During instruction, students are paired with an experienced partner and as students move through the square, dancers guide them.

At the completion of the course, students participate in a graduation and membership is then open to them. That’s when the real fun starts, when students learn to dance calls without the interruption of instruction. Ron Ham said, “The thing we say is, ‘Come to lessons and we’ll teach you the moves. Come to dances and we’ll teach you how to dance.’”

Newcomers can also learn other dances in between square dancing sessions, called “round dancing.” Spaugy said, “Round dancing is choreographed ballroom dancing. We do waltz, jive, chacha, rumba, mambo, fox-trot, and tango.”

Attending classes and dances with a dance partner is not required. Several members can dance both male and female roles, so no one is left out of the square.

Members become like a family, taking care of each other on and off the dance floor. “If someone in your square has a health problem, everyone else raises their hand and makes an arch and when the caller sees that, he stops the dance to take care of that medical emergency. If someone falls, everyone around them reaches out to help them up,” said Spaugy.

Ron Ham said when he had shoulder surgery, everyone showed their concern. “There’s a shirt I want and it says, ‘I dance in a square with a circle

of friends.’ When I had shoulder surgery, I don’t know how many people called to see if I needed anything done. It’s just a big family.”

Dancing is well established as an effective cardiovascular workout. “One evening dancing is the equivalent of a 5k,” said Spaugy. “It’s very good exercise. It’s good for the brain, too.”

While the club dances together only twice a month, members can dance every night of the week according to Ron Ham. Square dancing is so common, a short drive to other surrounding communities provides opportunities to dance as often as they want. Every Monday night the Spaugys and the Hams attend an exhibition ballroom dance at Linwood Methodist on 16th and Drexel in Oklahoma City.

As to difficulty, dancers can learn all they want to. The rank for square dancing begins at Mainstream, then to Plus, A, A-2, and Challenge.

“About 80 percent of dancers in Oklahoma are Mainstream and Plus level,” said Ham. Spaugy said you can dance almost anywhere in the world, with 19 countries represented at national competitions every year. “You can dance anywhere and the calls are always in English and Square Eights on stage at the State Fair

that’s worldwide. Even if they don’t speak English.”

Square dancing is the official state dance for Oklahoma and President Ronald Reagan declared it to be the national folk dance. Henry Ford was a square dance enthusiast who, with his instructor Benjamin Lovett, brought the dance to schools and to people with disabilities. They discovered that the blind, deaf, and those with artificial legs could learn and benefit from square dancing.

According to save-squardancing.com, Ford and Lovett felt, “the dancing had great balancing exercises, and taught manners, rhythm, poise, and grace.”

Square Eights is pleased to introduce it to their local disabled community. An hour before scheduled public classes begin, the instructor will also teach the employees of South Central Industries, a shelter, workshop, and resident center for people with physical and intellectual challenges. “The calls will be modified so they can have their own dances,” said Spaugy.

Classes for the general public begin January 10 and will be held every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at the First Christian Church on Broadway. The cost is $3 per person, per class.

Power Chair Challenge: Find a Stranger in Need Jim Kinammon and his small band of workers never stop helping others. Kinammon, his wife Debbi, and two other volunteers spend their days and nights making sure disabled and less fortunate adults and children receive the medical equipment they need, such as manual and motorized wheelchairs, walkers, standers, hospital beds, shoes, diapers, and baby formula.

The organization is known as Amazing Grace and operates from a small warehouse in Shawnee. Kinammon, a retired airplane mechanic from Tinker Air Force Base, began this journey five years ago when he was volunteering to pick up trash in downtown Shawnee. At the time, he saw a woman trying to push a man in a manual wheelchair. She was having a difficult time helping the man. That’s when the light bulb went off inside Kinammon’s mind.

He decided to start a charitable organization that would help needy people who needed medical equipment. Since then, Kinammon’s work has reached every state in the U.S. and overseas to places like Ukraine and Russia. In August, Amazing Grace sent $350,000 in medical supplies to Baton Rouge following a massive flood.

“We have a network that encompasses all of the United States,” he said. “We ship (equipment) to every state and people in every state watch what we do.”

Kinammon’s tale is a feel-good story that’s been publicized before, but his work never stops. He’s 63 and he has no plans to quit helping others. His work often involves repairing powered or manual wheelchairs, which means new tires, batteries, or seats.

Kinammon acknowledges he couldn’t fulfill his mission without the generosity of others.

“We have a pretty good network of people who donate,” he said. “There’s individuals, churches,

hospitals. We take donations from all over the country.”

Donations come in the form of money, used wheelchairs and other medical equipment no longer in use, diapers, baby formula and anything else that is needed. If a need arises and the item isn’t in stock, Kinammon will find it somewhere.

“It takes a lot of money that I don’t have,” he admitted. “We barely get by but we seem to get what we need when we need it. I take donations when I can or I go buy the stuff myself. It’s a big undertaking.”

In a recent case, Kinammon spent nearly $360 on replacement parts for a paralyzed child’s motorized wheelchair. Kinammon didn’t blink an eye about spending the money because the child was in need.

He also knows most of the people Amazing Grace helps can’t afford new motorized wheelchairs, which cost about $35,000. That’s why he focuses on finding used equipment that can be repaired or modified to fit a person’s special needs. “I try to solicit (monetary) donations but

“I’m not a money person. I’m a doer and we enjoy doing it.”

Soon after the charitable organization Amazing Grace was founded, Kinammon set up a Facebook page to get the word out. “We were lucky people saw it,” he said.

Responses from people who have benefitted from the charity’s generosity are overwhelming.

Rachael Exline wrote, “Amazing Grace is so wonderful! They are truly Angels. I was able to get my son an almost brand new pacer gait trainer in perfect condition and a fun trike. The best people around, always answer questions, very quick to respond and will work with you to look at equipment.”

Karina Youssef wrote about children in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus receiving needed medical equipment.

“I do believe in miracles, thanks to this group and Jim Kinammon.

In these countries there is no gov-

ernment support and there is no health insurance that could provide support. Families barely can cover medical expenses and this help is the blessing for them,” she wrote on the Amazing Grace Facebook page.

With the worldwide web at his fingertips and the demand for help increasing, Kinammon and his crew now process about 80 to 120 requests a month. “We take care of all of them,” he said.

That means working about 18 hours a day seven days a week.

On average, the charity also provides wheelchairs to 18 people each month. They also distribute beds, diapers, tracheotomy supplies, walkers, and standers to people in need. “We try to make sure we have whatever people will need,” he said.

Sending donated and repaired medical equipment and supplies overseas is a labor love. In the past, Amazing Grace sent a huge care package to Ukraine and Russian

children who suffer from birth defects. Closer to home, Kinammon also sent repaired motorized wheelchairs to people in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Right now, the biggest needs are manual wheelchairs, walkers, standers, and special adaptive chairs. “This year, we will give out four power chairs. My plan is to let people find a total stranger in need. It cannot be a family member or a friend. The recipient cannot know prior to Dec 20. You must have any to deliver to recipient. All correspondence has to be done by private message. Winners will be chosen by our board of directors.

This contest has no limit on area.

Anyone in the USA is eligible, but you must pickup, deliver, or ship the chair yourself. It must be for a stranger you meet. We will need size of recipient to match a chair.”
