S

ummer is upon us! An annual tradition in our house is to plot all of our summer plans on the calendar before we get going! Here are some ideas we put together.

Summer movies: Jones Theatres and Golden Ticket Cinema are offering summer movie series for either free or only $1 (some with discounted snack packs available, as well).

If you’re willing to drive a little, you could also visit the Regal in Midwest City and tack on free bowling (visit kidsbowlfree.com for details).

Swimming: Shawnee Splash is fun any time, but they also have a great calendar of events Angela Rowland lined up. If you plan to go often, the season pass is a great deal, but make sure you do the math to see if it would be worth it for your family. If you don’t have a pass, note that “Twilight Hours” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. are discounted to only $2 per person!

Summer reading: Of course, the library summer reading program is always a favorite. Earning free books and prizes for reading? That’s a no-brainer. But the library also has some great free events for kids and teens on their calendar. Check the Pioneer Library website for details.

Camps: Check local dance studios and other businesses like The Guilded Grayland on Main Street for summer camps for kids, and don’t miss Mabee-Gerrer Museum’s weekly free Art Mania events on Tuesdays. Check mgmoa.org for details.

Block Parties: Community Renewal is hosting regular block parties throughout the summer, as are local churches. Keep your eyes peeled for details or visit the social media pages of any of the above entities.

Parks: Of course, you can always find unscheduled, unstructured fun at the myriad of parks in Shawnee, including the recently updated Woodland Veteran’s Park and KidSpace Park. HOW BREAKFAST CAN CURB SUGAR CRAVINGS

ver find yourself reaching for sweets by mid-morning or crashing hard in the afternoon?

Sugar cravings are common and often start with how you begin your day. Cravings are often tied to blood sugar swings, stress, lack of sleep and undereating – especially in the morning.

When your blood sugar crashes after a carb-heavy or skipped breakfast, your body wants quick energy. The easiest fix? Sugar. Eating a balanced, protein-rich breakfast can prevent that crash-and-crave cycle. Special Museum Exhibit Features Refreshing Scenes, Compelling Artist Stories SUBMITTED BY DELAYNNA TRIM, CURATOR OF COLLECTIONS AT MABEE-GERRER MUSEUM OF ART

I

The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art’s newest exhibition showcases water scenes from the 17th century to contemporary created by a diverse group of artists.

f you have not already, you need to check out the latest exhibit at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, “Reflections on Water.”

It is filled with art from our permanent collection all featuring water. The pieces range from the 17th century to contemporary. Many are calm, peaceful scenes where you can see a perfect reflection in the water below. Others are crashing waves illustrating the power of the ocean. Many of these pieces have not been on exhibit for a long time, so you can see some old friends and experience many new pieces.

The best part of my job is getting to research and learn more about our collection. There are some interesting stories surrounding this exhibit.

Gustave Guillaumet – who painted “On the River Oise” – had a normal story until he met "a lady who was his senior by many years," according to the New York Times. In 1887, he moved in with his mistress, and after an argument, he shot himself. The bullet became lodged in his body, and his wife came and nursed him until his death. This was all relayed in a New York Times article about his death.

A couple of pieces in the exhibit are by Alfred Bricher, who is considered to be one of the greatest maritime painters in the 19th century. He lived in the New York area for much of his life. He liked to explore how light hits and is reflected off the water. At the end of his life, he lived on Staten Island where he had views of the Lower New York Bay, Atlantic Ocean and Raritan Bay. Eloi Justou, who was also a home project page.

monk at St. Gregory’s Abbey. There is also a piece by Fr. John Walch, who was director of the museum in the 1980s.

We even have a small painting by Albert Bierstadt, who was known for his sweeping landscapes of the American West. He was born in Germany but spent much of his adult life in New York. This piece features the Hendrick Hudson, a schooner sailing out of New York in 1859.

“Rock Creek Park” was created by Aloysius O’Kelly, who was the first Irish artist to train at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.

He later moved to New York.

Another painting features part of the 101 Ranch near Ponca City. Emil Lenders was from London and was fascinated by the Wild West shows. Buffalo Bill Cody convinced him to move to Oklahoma. He spent time on the 101 Ranch capturing scenes of bison and nature.

There are so many great stories in this exhibit, so whether you need a respite and want to sit viewing the calm, reflective waters or just want to dream of visiting these far-off waters, come enjoy “Reflections on Water” until July 20.

Summer Offers Many Opportunities For New, Simple Healthy Choices

ummer has always felt like a reset button.

The pace slows. The days stretch longer. And if you’re like me, you try to make the most of those cooler morning hours. I consider myself a morning person, but even I wince a little when our dog Ruby starts barking before the sun’s fully up. Her pre-dawn persistence is maddening, but I’ve got to admit: it’s made me healthier.

Those morning walks with my wife and Ruby have become one of the best parts of my day. Movement, connection, quiet conversation … and the occasional neighborhood wave. It’s these small daily rituals that Bobb-Semple remind me how health starts not with heroic effort, In fact, according to our 2024 Community Health but with repeatable, relational moments.

The Power of Summer Habits

A national survey from The Genius of Play revealed that 78 percent of parents prioritize family time during the summer, and 91 percent are committed to making the season special for their kids. That’s not just good parenting – that’s public health in motion.

Some of the simplest summer habits have the deepest impact, such as: • Taking a family walk, even just around the block after dinner.

• Starting a game night or turning off devices for a weekly “unplugged evening.”

• Trying new recipes together, especially with fruits and veggies that are in season.

• Playing. About 65 percent of parents say it helps their kids stay active, and 63 percent say it builds social skills.

These aren't just feel-good activities; they directly address some of our county’s most pressing health challenges. One in four residents faces food insecurity. Nearly 30 percent report no weekly physical activity. And many residents – particularly those who are isolated – face high levels of mental and emotional stress.

Health Is More Than Healthcare

When we talk about health, we often think about clinics, prescriptions or procedures, but those make up just 20 percent of what determines our health outcomes, according to the County Health Rankings model.

The other 80 percent? That comes from: • Where we live • How connected we feel • What we eat • Whether we feel safe • How easy it is to walk, learn, play, and rest That’s why our CHIP – Community Health Improvement Plan – goes beyond any one organization or solution. 3. Neighborhood & Built Environment We're strengthening the spaces where people live, learn and move, because your ZIP code shouldn't determine your health.

• Housing Affordability: Improving housing attainability and sustainability.

Social Media Hiatus Leads To Unexpected Lessons

don’t know if ghosts are real, mostly because I’ve never seen one. But I’ve sort of been one.

It’s been five years since I was an active participant on social media. I regularly posted, liked and commented both personally and professionally for the better part of 15 years. Then one day, I made a decision and poof, I vanished.

Sure, I’ve been tagged in posts – mostly family related – and once a year, I make it a point to acknowledge all the kind souls who send well-wishes on my birthday. But practically speaking, I hit the eject button in 2020. Yes, that 2020.

Life apart from social media was the right choice for me for a season of life. I removed what I saw as a significant source of negativity from my life, and both my mental and physical health improved. I still don’t miss social media much, but I do miss those small little meaningful moments of connection that social media has the power to provide even with all its obvious ills. You can never fully

escape the negative forces in our world, but with healthy relational balance, the negative forces can become quieter and more manageable without having to permanently move to the mountains or become a social media hermit.

That said, a break or extended vacation may be exactly what you need. It sure helped me. S

Shawnee Artist’s Capitol Murals Capture Spirit Of Oklahoma

F

or an artist, it’s a dream job.

A large-scale request commissioning murals meant to capture the spirit of the motto of the state you call home that will hang forever in a prominent place at the seat of government.

That’s the opportunity Shawnee artist Lucas Simmons just completed with the unveiling of his fourth mural at the Oklahoma State Capitol last month, which was the final piece in a series inspired by the state motto “Labor Omnia Vincit” — translated as “Work Conquers All.” Each installment measures on average nine feet in height and 11 feet in length and focuses on the industries and people who have built this state through dedication and steadfastness.

“We were able to direct these toward the industries and people groups in those

industries that helped show the history of Oklahoma,” Simmons said. “It was a massive honor. There’s a really impressive art collection at the capitol, so it’s also very humbling to join that group.”

The capitol hosted an event last month for the installment of the fourth and final of these murals, which hang on the ground floor underneath the rotunda surrounding the great seal inlaid in the floor of the building near where visitors enter.

This project began in 2019 when members of the Oklahoma Arts Council approached him about a public art concept on this scale at the capitol building. The council’s director of visual and public art Jarica Walsh was familiar with his work from a small art show in which Simmons had participated, and the thesis work he created at the University of

Oklahoma while earning his master’s degree in fine arts had caught the attention of the Oklahoma Arts Council.

For Simmons, however, the journey began long before that in the small town of Weleetka, where as a youngster he spent much of his time in nature sketching and creating stories about the world around him. This early immersion in nature laid the foundation for his creative journey.

“I would go play in the creek and catch bugs and try to draw things,” Simmons said. “I was always being inspired by nature.”

Simmons began attending Oklahoma Baptist University as a student studying science with thoughts of a career in health care, but he maintained his interest in creative pursuits. He changed his major to music and English > www.shawneeoutlook.com

before getting to know Julie Blackstone, who spent decades at OBU guiding young artists.

He changed majors again just in time to join a group led by Blackstone on a trip to New York, where they spent time among the galleries and his fellow students.

“I fell in love with the art community and my professors over there at OBU,” Simmons said.

As he began to approach the end of his undergraduate studies, Simmons recognized the possibility that the future may require him to step into a teaching role, so he earned his master’s degree in fine art from the University of Oklahoma. Yet, his time spent there yielded more than new teaching opportunities.

In fact, his thesis work at OU also helped him catch the eye of those with the Arts Council charged with finding an artist to take on the project requested by the capitol.

His primary focus, however, was still

in creating his own work.

Simmons accepted invitations to local shows to help get exposure for his art – such as the show hosted by Walsh – and began to gain a reputation and favor from art enthusiasts.

“I was just making stuff, and people

kept buying it,” Simmons said.

In addition to helping Simmons make a living as a working artist, it also gave him the opportunity to meet other area artists and grow his network.

Simmons said there is an irony that comes with working as an artist. On one hand, he spends a lot of time alone while he is creating. He estimated his work on the murals during the four-year process accounted for about 5,000-6,000 hours.

Yet, all that solitary creation does no good without a community of artists to provide feedback and opportunities to share your work. That was especially true during the capitol project.

“Working on such a large scale requires a village,” Simmons said.

For instance, the size of the murals themselves required multiple people to help stretch, move and finish the installation at the capitol building once Simmons had completed the eight month process of painting and setting each piece properly.

Simmons has found opportunities as a lecturer at his alma mater to share these insights with OBU art students in the same way that he received guidance during his time there.

“If I hadn’t said yes to all these opportunities and smaller shows … then some people would not have seen my work, and I would not have gotten to do this (capitol project).,” Simmons said. “Don’t assume you know the path, because the path is different for everyone. All the little decisions you make can lead to opportunities that you don’t foresee.”

Simmons now is turning his attention to a more personal and local project. Though details are still forming, OBU has commissioned him to provide large-scale, original art to coincide with the renovation of some of its campus buildings that will represent its journey as an institution and those of its students.

And he can undertake that and other future projects knowing he has secured a place among the other artists featured at the heart of the state he proudly calls home.

“It’s hard to imagine doing anything bigger,” Simmons said. “I’m extremely fortunate to have had this job … with what it represents and where it’s going to be from now on.”

Observances Held In Shawnee, Return To Resthaven

Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park hosted its first Memorial Day ceremonies since an interruption stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and joined other observances honoring those who have given their lives in service to the country. ­— Photos by David Dinsmore

eople, businesses and organizations came together last month to remember those who gave their lives in defense of freedom and to honor the loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Memorial Day observances began in 1868 – known at that time as Decoration Day – but did not become an official federal holiday until 1971.

As home to the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial, Shawnee has a long tradition of honoring those who gave their lives in service and the families who continue their legacies.

around the community this year, including in the park – where there stands a memorial wall with names etched dating back to the SpanishAmerican War alongside the recently installed Gold Star Families memorial – and an event planned for Gold Star Families at the Grand Casino.

This year also marked the return of Resthaven Funeral Home and Memorial Park’s annual Memorial Day ceremony after a five-year interruption dating back to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

“We’re really glad to bring this back so we can honor those fallen heroes,”

said Scotti Nease, general manager at Resthaven.

Veteran and local advocate Bill Ford, however, remembers attending observances in the late 1960s at what is now Resthaven Memorial Park on Highway 3.

Like the memorial wall downtown, the veterans interred at Resthaven Memorial Park extend back to the Spanish-American War and continue through contemporary times. Local Boy Scouts helped place flags at the markers of veterans totaling nearly 1,300.

“Memorial Day started as a

decoration day in cemeteries,” Nease said.

“People want to come and hone those who served faithfully.

“It means a lot to the families who know we live in a free country today because their family member served.”

Among the ceremonies was a 21gun salute and the laying of a commemorative wreath near the memorial housed within Resthaven’s park.

Shawnee Police Department chaplain Ken Kerbo provided the invocation for Resthaven’s event.

“We are here today for one purpose, and that is to let the families of the men and women who have already sacrificed their lives that we will never forget,” Kerbo said.

“We are so thankful, and we humbly thank

them for their service.”

Boy Scouts also assisted in the lowering of the flags during the ceremony while a rendition of “Taps” resonated in the morning air as the sun peeked through the clouds for a short time that day.

Shawnee American Legion Post Commender Keith DiPatri also shared a few words with those gathered for the event.

“This day is sacred with the almost visible presence of those who have gone before us,” DiPatri said. “We honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of the country, and of those others who have dropped their burdens on the wayside of life and are going to their eternal rest. May the ceremonies of today deepen your reverence.” S

Legacy Parenting Center and Gateway to Prevention and Recovery have partnered in a powerful new way, combining their strengths to bring healing, support and hope to families in need.

Looking Ahead

Both organizations have big dreams for the future of this partnership. Legacy hopes to increase the number of therapy hours available on-site, so even more families can benefit from the support. Gateway envisions a growing presence that helps individuals, couples and families develop healthier patterns and deeper connections. In fact, Gateway staff member, Charline Brown, LCSW, will be joining the team, making it possible to serve an additional six participants.

But they can’t do it alone. The Shawnee community plays a vital role in keeping these programs strong. Simply sharing the word about the services available can help more families find their way to support. Others can get involved by reaching out to Legacy and learning what specific needs — like diapers or volunteer help — can be met.

“It takes a community to raise a family, and Shawnee has that heart,” said Glen Courtney, case manager and licensed marriage and family therapist at Gateway.

How Do I Cope After Loss Of My Dad?

Our first question comes from within the Outlook team's family.

Chase asks: My Dad died earlier this year, and I’m having a really hard time. Father’s Day is coming up, and I've been dreading it because I miss him so much. How do I cope with that day?

PC: Chase, thank you for your willingness to talk about a topic most of us eventually experience but often avoid discussing. The depth of love you feel for your Dad is apparent, which makes the depth of loss you feel unbearable. A parent’s death is a universal experience, but the path we walk through that experience is unique to each of us. Here are some things I think might be helpful to keep in mind.

The death of a parent is difficult no matter how close, distant or absent your dad or mom may have been. There is no “right” time table for grief. Healthy grieving takes longer than two days of excused absence from work. Allow yourself to have the time and space to grieve in the midst of your daily life. Death is not the end of a relationship. It is the transition of something lived out in real time and space to something that is no longer limited by time and space.

Life and death are woven together in our journey.

Acknowledging that allows us to give voice to both our joys and our sorrows. On Father’s Day or on other hard days, you might find it helpful to: • Tell stories about your Dad. Journal about life with your Dad. Find trusted listeners to hear and hold your stories.

• Be aware of the days ahead, noting the occasions, memories and holidays that may feel overwhelming because of their ties to your Dad. Allow yourself to engage in those moments in ways that fit where you are in your grief journey, whether you’re feeling the weight of your loss, the celebration of the life shared together or the bittersweet awareness of both.

• Remember all of who your Dad is to you, not on a pedestal, but as a human growing across time through the best and worst of himself. Allow yourself to be fully human as you offer yourself grace for the journey.

I realize a few paragraphs and bullet points can’t offer a complete conversation during a time as difficult as you’re experiencing. Here are a few resources I think might help.
