Runner’s motto: ‘Can I do this? Of course I can!’

A

t age 55, Janet Alexander had no aspirations of becoming a runner.

As an administrative assistant at East Central University, Alexander was more than happy to go to work, come home and go on her nightly walk, she said. She would go on a two-mile walk in her neighborhood every evening because it was good for her health, but she didn’t really enjoy it.

It was so boring that at the end of her walk, Alexander said, she would turn around and run home – not because she liked to run, but so she could get home faster.

One evening, Alexander was talking to her daughter, Jennifer, on the phone and was surprised by her comment, she said.

“She said, ‘Well, mom, if you can run two miles, you can run three. I’m going to sign you up for a 5K,’” Alexander said.

Alexander laughed, but her daughter did just that. Her first 5K was Race for the Cure. While she didn’t win, she did finish, and she said she realized the exhilaration and sense of accomplishment that came with finishing a race.

Since her first 5K about 12 years ago, Alexander has competed in around 90 different races, winning many of them in her age group. One of the wins she said she was most proud of, though, was the Oklahoma City Memorial 5K this past April.

Alexander’s age group – 65-69 – at this year’s Memorial 5K was the largest group she had ever competed against with 63 competitors, she said.

She had to get to downtown Oklahoma City at 5 a.m. in order to find parking, and then she waited, Alexander said. Race officials put the competitors in a parking garage to wait until the marathon runners began, then the half-marathon group and then finally the 5K competitors.

While it was only a wait of about 30 minutes, Alexander said it seemed like hours as her nerves started to rise.

“I’m always nervous right before a race,” Alexander said. “It’s a butterfly feeling. I have to talk to myself. Can I do this? Can I run this? And then I say, of course I can.”

As she gathered with the rest of the crowd and the race began, all the uneasiness melted away as Alexander listened to music and focused on keeping a steady pace to the finish line, she said.

In the end, she was the first to cross the finish line and won the race.

Alexanrer said this idea of “Can I do this? Of course I can!” permeates her life.

Five years after she started running races, Alexander decided to hike her first big mountain alongside her daughter, she said. They decided to start with Pikes Peak. They hiked up to the peak – with an elevation of 14,114 feet – in about 11 hours.

That was the first of many mountains for Alexander. She said she goes to Santa Fe with Jennifer and her son, Shane, to hike mountains there.

cluding South Sister with an elevation of 10,358 feet, Alexander said. They stay on the trail and marvel at the beauty of nature, taking in all the beautiful vistas as they go up the mountain. It is peaceful, and – like racing – an accomplishment.

At age 63, Alexander visited Jennifer in Oregon. In addition to hiking up mountains, her daughter also likes to climb them.

Alexander went with her one day just to watch her daughter climb, she said. She went as a nervous mother expecting to be filled with worry, but as she watched her, she thought, “Well that looks fun!”

Her ever-present philosophy of “Can I do this? Of course I can!” sent her up the side of a mountain as her fingers found tiny cracks in the cliff surface and her feet found tiny toe-holes, Alexander said. After reaching the top, she rappelled down the mountain and was exhilarated by the excitement of her newfound hobby. Since then, she has climbed many mountain faces, some as high as 60 feet.

Alexander’s outlook on life has led her to run races, hike mountains, climb mountains, zipline and even jump out of an airplane, she said. It isn’t all thrills and excitement, though. This same way of thinking also led her to take up quilting in the 1990s.

She attended a quilt auction with her best friend, and they saw some beautiful quilts, Alexander said. They looked at each other and said, “I bet we can do that.” Since then, Alexander has completed about one quilt a year, all hand-sewn with no machine work at all.

“It is relaxing,” she said. “You can’t think about anything else, and you can’t worry about anything.”

When people ask for advice about how to start running races, climbing mountains or even quilting, Alexander suggests a simple approach.

“Start easy; don’t start with a marathon,” Alexander said. “Drink lots of water every day of your life. Go climb a mountain. It’s fun.”

Artist finds inspiration in the beauty of nature

K

elly Pennington has always been creative, but it was only recently that she began calling herself an artist.

When she was a child, her mother would have to hide the scissors and the tape because Pennington was always using and misplacing them, she said. She was happiest with paper, scissors, paints, pens and even spare cardboard boxes.

Creating was a part of Pennington’s everyday life. She entertained herself. She said she was a loner, and though she did not know it yet, she was an artist.

Home was her creative place, and Pennington didn’t really enjoy school. She was the child that was always drifting off in her own thoughts, not really interested in the lessons. She couldn’t wait to get home again and create.

One day in fifth grade, it was pouring rain, and the kids couldn’t go outside, Pennington said. The teacher made them draw instead, and she realized she really enjoyed it.

Her work set her apart from the other students, Pennington said. She now had that visual vocabulary, and school started to become more interesting to her.

In sixth grade, she had a teacher that had them do rice paper paintings of the Taj Mahal, Pennington said. She had an art teacher in seventh grade who taught her how to draw what she saw and not just what she knew.

When Pennington discovered her deep connection to art, she said it changed the course of her life.

“Art has made me a better person,” Pennington said. “It is fulfilling, and I know it is what I am meant to do. It drives me as a human being. I want to make my community better, and I want to share my art with everyone to help give them the joy it gives me. Most of all, my art gives me the confidence to succeed in this tough life. I hope everyone has something that they can hold this near and dear to their heart.”

After graduating high school, Pennington said she decided that she wanted to bring her love of art to other students. She became an art teacher at three schools before deciding to devote her life full-time to painting with oils. However, she had a great opportunity with the Chickasaw Nation to teach art and work with students outside of the traditional classroom environment.

While she enjoyed her work, she still longed for an art studio of her own and the time to fully commit to painting, Pennington said. Recently, she took the leap and chose to be a full-time artist, working every day in her studio.

“This is the hardest job I’ve ever done,” Pennington said. “You have to paint every day in order to improve. This job is hard because you have to have self-discipline. You have to create that structure for yourself. There are going to be days you don’t want to paint, but you have to show up and do the work no matter what. Artists tend to live in the moment. We are sensitive, we love to play, and that can also make it difficult to stay on task.”

Even though it can be difficult at times, Pennington said, she gets to work on a schedule she sets for herself, growing and improving as the days and weeks pass.

In addition to painting, Pennington said she is also passionate about being an art education advocate, she said. She was recently sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council to be artist-in-residence at local schools within a 45-minute radius of Ada. This allows her to share her love of art with younger students while giving them a chance to work with a professional artist,

Pennington said. Not only do they learn from her personal artistic experiences, but they can also see that choosing art as a career path is something realistic and attainable.

Pennington describes her style as “contemporary impressionistic.” She creates this with loose brushwork, simplified shapes and immediate brushwork – meaning that she puts it on the canvas and then leaves it alone.

She is also a colorist – playing around with colors, exaggerating them and committing particular focus to light and dark color values, letting them define the overall structure and composition of her paintings, Pennington said.

Because of her particular style, Pennington is a “plein air” painter, which is a French term for painting in the great outdoors, she said. The impressionists were the founders of this movement because tubes of paint had just been invented, allowing artists to move from a studio into the natural light.

“The painting is much more honest when you paint outside,” Pennington said. “If I paint from a photograph, the photograph lies about the values and the colors. But when I’m outside, I see accurate color temperatures and values and am more connected to my subject on a higher level. I want to see it for myself and give my own interpretation of what I see. While I do try to exaggerate the color, it is so I can show what is visually important.”

Suicide prevention takes spotlight during September

W

hile it is a difficult subject to think about, suicide is a tragic reality of life that affects entire families and communities.

Highlighting information that people can use to save a single life in the community is worth having the discussion despite some of the unfortunate circumstances and unpleasantness that can accompany the topic of suicide.

Whether during the week of Sept. 10-16 or for the entire month, September is a time when mental health-oriented organizations focus intensely on suicide prevention efforts and outreach.

Suicide is not restricted to men or women, young or old, rich or poor. It is a problem for every demographic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in 2015.

More than 44,000 people died intentionally by their own hand, according to 6 • www.adahub.com

the CDC. Suicide was the second leading cause of death among those between ages 15-34 and the third among ages 10-14.

There were twice as many suicides as homicides in 2015 as well.

While this is a tragedy for those who commit suicide as well as their friends and families, it is also a preventable one, said Will Haywood, counselor with Mental Health Services of Southern Oklahoma.

Haywood said that it is important to understand the differences between being sad and being depressed.

“It is a very fine line – sad is an emotion and a feeling, but depressed is a mood,” Haywood said. “So anybody can be sad for a short period of time, but depression is much more than that. It is a lack of motivation, not having any energy even though you might be eating or sleeping more than usual. It … ends up being a chemical reaction in your body that you can’t just get over. Looking at pictures of kittens might make you happier if you are sad, but it isn’t

going to undo the chemical imbalance.”

This is another problematic aspect of depression, Haywood said. People who are depressed might not even seem sad. They might just seem different, and the changes can be so gradual that it is difficult for them or those around them to see the depression for what it is.

One reason for the prevalence of suicide, however, is the stigma surrounding mental illness, Haywood said.

“I want people to realize that depression is more normal than they realize,” Haywood said. “We should treat mental health the way we treat our physical health. Just because you can’t see the effects of the issue doesn’t mean it isn’t just as serious or real. No one would question someone if they went to the doctor because they broke their leg, and people shouldn’t think anything about it if they are going to the doctor because they are depressed.”

One of the most important things that friends or family can do to help protect

their loved ones is simply to be there, Haywood said. Recognize behavioral changes and respond with empathy.

Encourage them to get help and provide them with the resources to do so.

There are even free online courses that one can take in mental health first aid that can help people recognize the symptoms and handle them in a short-term manner until long-term solutions can be found.

If someone is in imminent danger, call 911. Emergency services are trained to respond to these situations accordingly and will get the person the mental health services that they need.

Those struggling with suicidal thoughts or behavior should know that it is not a permanent state of mind, Haywood said.

One example is Shelby, who asked only to use her first name for this story.

Shelby was a student at ECU in 2014 when she decided to jump from the catwalk of Briles Hall.

Her friends were able to save her and get her to safety, but Shelby had every intention of ending her life later that January evening, she said. She had been struggling with crippling depression and anxiety, but that day she didn’t feel anything. She wasn’t happy. She wasn’t sad. She was just numb.

“I didn't have any emotion during that time,” she said. “It was like I was on autopilot.”

Shelby went to a mental hospital to seek help. Since then, she said she has had one relapse this past June and went to a facility in Ardmore.

“It was the best decision I could have made,” Shelby said.

“They were able to find the perfect medicine for my needs and show me how to handle a lot of my anger, anxiety and grief. A lot of people think mental health is this big taboo, and people just assume you're crazy. I graduated East Central, I have a steady job, I have a life and I have a mental illness.”

In Shelby’s case, it has been a journey, but one with successful results, she said.

For those who might be depressed or suicidal, it is never too late to get help, Haywood said. They can consult a doctor or get an appointment with a mental health clinic.

In the meantime, it can be beneficial to rely on their existing support structures, such as churches, friends, family or other community organizations.

For anyone who just needs someone to listen or help in a nonemergency situation, the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available around the clock at 1-800-273-8255. They are always there, and it is always confidential.

Those seeking help can also get help via the Crisis Text Line by connecting with a crisis counselor by texting the word NAMI to 741-741.

Medieval Fair gallops into new venue at Allen-area winery

Rocky Top Winery near Allen will play host to this year’s Medieval Fair that used to take place at the Elks Lodge in Ada.

ocky Top Winery will be hosting a Medieval Fair from 9 a.m to 6 p.m on Sept. 30 at 7569 EW 148 near Allen.

In the past, this fair has been held at the Elks Lodge in Ada. However, Wilma Harden, owner of the Rocky Top Winery, was approached by event planners about moving the Medieval Fair to her vineyards, she said. They needed more space in order for the fair to grow.

This year looks to be the biggest and best Medieval Fair yet.

Harden said she is hoping that this will become an annual Ada tradition, much like the ones near Norman, Muskogee and Dallas.

Several performers who frequent these other, more established fairs will also be coming to the one in Ada as well.

Hazel Southerland and her grandson, Patrick Southerland, will be coming to do demonstrations with horses, according to information provided by event planners. The Mirage Belly Dancers are coming from Norman.

Artists will be on hand to paint faces, and booths will be available for food and drinks, including dark beer, wine and smoked turkey legs.

dance, helping educate fairgoers about the Medieval culture and crafts. There will be demonstrations of armored combat, European court dance, calligraphy, illumination, armor making and costuming. Other booths will feature woodworking and metalworking demonstrations.

For Harden, organizing this Medieval Fair has been an adventure filled with research and new connections, she said. She is most looking forward to meeting all the new people attending the fair this year. She and the other workers will be in traditional costumes, and fairgoers are encouraged to wear costumes as well, though it is not required.

A Taste of Ada serves up art, food with a side of philanthropy

T

he Ada Arts Council will be hosting their annual Taste of Ada fundraiser from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at The Grandview event center at 201 E. Main St. Every year this event brings together local businesses, artists and vendors to create a culinary and artistic experience that is fun for the whole family, arts council president Rebecca Nicholson Weir said.

This year’s theme is “Time Out,” and people will have a chance to bid in a silent audition for clocks that have been painted and made by local artists, Weir said.

In the past, artists have created and painted lamps or chairs. The Ada Arts Council likes the idea of having functional art available so people have a chance to display it in their homes while also serving a purpose.

This event will also feature live music provided by Happyland Music Alliance, and

many local vendors and restaurants will set up booths so attendees can see and sample their wares, Weir said. There will be food, beer and wine tasting from local restaurants, food trucks, wineries and shops.

There is no fee for vendors to set up a booth, however, event planners do ask that the businesses provide door prizes that will be awarded throughout the evening, Weir said.

Tickets are $10 at the door, and the proceeds from the fundraiser go toward the work that the Ada Arts Council does in the community.

The arts council sponsors scholarships for kids to go to the ACT II summer theater camp as well as scholarships for graduating seniors in the arts, Weir said.

They are also one of the sponsors of AdaFest and partner to support the Chickasaw Nation’s youth arts month.

The council is also looking into helping

provide art materials for local schools for use in arts education, Weir said.

“Creativity is essential to what makes us human, and we want to support art and artists at every level,” Weir said. “Preschool children are artists, and they need the tools to foster that.

“There are also adult artists in our community that also need our support.”

Addiction recovery service believes in second chances

P

eople make mistakes. Sometimes, it is something as small as ordering the wrong meal at a favorite restaurant.

Other times, it can be as big as choosing the wrong career or college degree.

One of the biggest mistakes one might make, however, could be going down the path of addiction.

Statistics show this is particularly prevalent in Oklahoma. According to 2012 data from the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse, the state ranks second in the nation for substance abuse disorders at 11.9 percent, translating to between 700,000 and 950,000 Oklahomans who are in need of addiction recovery services.

Traditionally, incarceration has been the primary way that drug offenses have been handled, said Andrew Terry, executive director of the Southern Oklahoma Addiction Recovery program.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, drug offenses account for 46.3 percent of all prison inmates in the United States.

This is one of the reasons that Judge Tom Landrith started the SOAR program about ten years ago, Terry said. It began with providing services for up to eight men who lived in a house in Ada. Four years ago, they purchased the old Salvation Army Building at 115 S Oak Ave. and increased their capacity to house 27 men, Terry said. Now with some expansions, they can house 45 at that facility.

They also built the Landrith House at 317 N. Stockton St., which houses eight women, and the program is in the process of building another house to hold another eight women, Terry said.

They recently purchased another house that they are remodeling to become a transitional living facility for men who have completed the program but want to continue living and working in Ada with the support system they need to stay clean.

SOAR is based on the idea that “the best rehabilitation is work,” Terry said. In order to begin the program, the client must have some sort of referral from an entity like the drug court, district attorney, judge, probation officer or Department of Human Services. This helps provide extra motivation for some to continue the program.

People can leave at any time, but they must go back to their referring source, which in many cases will mean jail or prison, Terry said.

The program costs nothing to the clients nor to the taxpayers, Terry said. It is a self-supporting nonprofit organization that exists solely from donations and the hard work of their clients.

When someone starts the program at SOAR, he or she joins a family of people who know what addiction is like, Terry said.

Everyone who works at the organization has also been through it at one time as a client.

The program lasts six months during which clients are placed in

a job with a local participating business, Terry said. They try to fit the clients with a job that will help fulfill them and aid in their success.

For instance, if someone has experience as a carpenter, then the program would try to put that client in a construction position, Terry said. Their wages come directly to the program in order to pay for the clients’ room, board and recovery services.

This gives the client a greater sense of purpose and accountability; they are accountable to the program, the other participants and their new bosses and coworkers.

Terry approaches his job at SOAR with excitement and passion, he said. When he admits new guys, he regularly finds that he is “smiling ear to ear.”

“Some might think I’m putting on a show, but I am just so proud of what this program does for so many people,” Terry said.

Terry knows its impact firsthand. He worked his way up to executive director during the past two years after spending six months as a client of SOAR. “It takes a lifetime to beat an addiction,” Terry said. “It is an everyday struggle, but if you have a good accountability partner and a good support structure, it can be done easily.”

Terry was given a second chance by SOAR, and every day he looks forward to helping others turn their lives around as well, he said.

Previous client Robert Wheeler said he knows how bad the alternative can be. Wheeler spent time in prison for a non-violent drug offense and checked into SOAR when he was released on probation.

“Everything in my life has changed,” Wheeler said. “I'm a better husband, a better father, a better person in general. I would be back in prison or dead if not for SOAR. It is a real good deal if you take it seriously and participate and want to change your life.

There is a lot of help and support here.”

They also take every chance they can to give back to the community, Terry said, helping with the food pantry at Asbury United Methodist Church, painting schools and helping build the new gym at Latta schools.
