Ada Homeless Services giving a helping hand

M

ost portrayals of homelessness conjure up images of big cities and skid row like scenes out of a movie; it can seem so distant from small town Oklahoma life.

While urban homelessness is a visible problem, rural homelessness is much more invisible, much more prevalent than one might think and nearly impossible to count, director at Ada Homeless Services Sarah Frye said.

Though some rural homeless people might live on the street, the majority live in abandoned homes with no running water or electricity, Frye said. More commonly they live “doubled up” with multiple people – sometimes entire families – living in a house or apartment that is too small for their needs. It is not uncommon to have entire families living in a single room of a house when they are in these situations.

This is where Ada Homeless Services try to help, Frye said. Founded in 2003 as 4 • www.adahub.com

Ada Area Community Emergency Services (AACES), the program tried to help people by giving them a place to stay – usually a hotel voucher for a night or two – in emergency situations because there was no homeless shelter in town. This would give them a chance to take a shower, get a good night’s sleep and attempt to get back on their feet, but this was just a temporary solution.

“The hotel voucher program is just a Band-Aid,” Frye said. “We needed to get people off the streets and get them rehomed.”

When Frye took over as director in December 2015, they changed the name to Ada Homeless Services to give people a better idea of what their purpose was, and they also changed their approach to homelessness by focusing more on long-term solutions and limiting the hotel voucher system.

Under a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Ada Homeless Services offers homeless prevention and a rapid rehousing program.

Homeless prevention is for people who are imminently homeless. According to the HUD guidelines this means that they will be homeless within 14 days unless something is done.

This can be because of an eviction notice or cutoff notices on their utilities, according to HUD information. In order to be helped under the homeless prevention program, there is an income requirement as recipients cannot make more than 30 percent below the average median income for Pontotoc County.

For rapid rehousing there is no income requirement, Frye said. The participants must be literally homeless, such as living in a residence with no utilities, doubled up or fleeing domestic violence.

Frye said rapid rehousing is the future for Ada Homeless Services. They try to rehome at least two families per month, but this can be costly. Thankfully they have many landlords in town who are willing to work with them, and the program helps provide a safety net to help these participants succeed in their new lives.

It is expensive moving into a new house, Frye said. Many places require first and last month’s rent and other deposits, and this doesn’t even take into account the deposits on utilities, especially if someone has had problems paying their utilities in the past.

Those who participate in rapid rehousing are enrolled in the program for three months, Frye said. The first month Ada Homeless Services pays the initial rent and deposits, making it possible for a family to move into a new home.

This allows some safety and security and can help them begin to get on their feet again, Frye said. If they are unemployed it is difficult to find a job, especially if they cannot shower, clean their clothes or get a good night’s rest.

The second month, Ada Homelessness Services pay 65 percent of the costs, and the third month they pay 30 percent, Frye said.

This gives the family a chance to slowly become stable until they can survive on their own.

Ada Homeless Services also helps connect the participants with others who can help them, Fye said, whether it is educational or vocational resources, food stamps, disability or medical and mental health services.

“We want to address it holistically,” Frye said. “There are underlying problems that cause them to be homeless. These need to be addressed to help them become stable again.”

Rose Tucker and Pedro Jesse Chazarreta were the parents in

one such family that benefitted from the program at Ada Homeless Services. They had moved up to Ada from Texas with their three small children: eight-year-old Michael, seven-year-old Charles and six-year-old Jacklyn.

They found themselves homeless, and the only place for them to stay was at Chazaretta’s cousin’s house, Tucker said.

“There were nine of us in that little three bedroom house,” Tucker said. “All five of us stayed in a single small bedroom that was barely big enough for two queen size air mattresses.”

While this was uncomfortable, it also had an impact on her children’s performance in school, she said. It can be difficult to learn when you don’t have a space to yourself.

With the help of their church family at Ada Baptist Temple and Ada Homeless Services they have their own house now, Tucker said. They just completed the three month program, are completely on their own and are even saving up money using financial advice from their pastor Mickey Hollars.

They are one success story of many, Frye said. Ada Homeless Services continues to do important work in the community, helping people on the brink of homelessness and finding those who may have slipped through the cracks.

They are always in need of monetary donations to help with their program and also donations of toiletries and nonperishable food items that can be opened easily on the streets and don’t need to be cooked, Frye said.

Klean-R-Us making lives cleaner, happier

I

n this busy world, it can be difficult to find time to clean.

Many people work long hours and come home exhausted, barely finding the time or energy to keep up with their cleaning duties. While dishes and laundry may get done, other chores often get neglected dusting, mopping and much needed deep cleaning.

This is where Klean-R-Us Janitorial Service Inc. would like to help.

Monica Ford established Klean-R-Us in 1990, she said. At the time, she was working in the medical field while raising three children.

To make extra money to support her family, she started cleaning businesses at night when she would get off work, Ford said. While doing this, she saw that there was a great need for professional, reliable cleaning services.

Her business began to grow. Ford said it became too much for her to do alone, so she started hiring other people to help.

She focused on commercial properties, but then her clients also wanted her to add residential properties to her services, Ford said. After eight years, Ford quit her job in the medical field and Klean-R-Us became her full time business.

In those 27 years her business has grown from a single employee to a cleaning staff of 45 people, Ford said.

Ford grew up in Germany, and her mother was very particular about cleaning, she said. Her mother would give her a toothbrush and have her clean the baseboards.

Being raised in a very clean environment such as that, Ford grew up to be very clean person, she said. She likes the feeling of a clean and organized space. She even wrote a manual on how to clean properly, because a lot of people might not know what to do or even where to begin.

Her business allows her to use her skills and passion to help make other people’s lives easier and cleaner, she said.

Although Ford started out doing commercial properties, she has since added residential and industrial services as well as foreclosures and evictions, she said. All customers are given a free estimate and jobs are tailored to meet each particular customer’s needs.

For commercial properties, the customer’s request may require the Klean-R-Us team to clean desks, kitchens, bathrooms, floors and ceiling fan/fixtures, Ford said.

Residential cleaning services include dusting, mopping, vacuuming as well as cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms, just to name a few of their maintenance cleaning services, Ford said. If a house needs deep cleaning, Klean-R-Us sends out a team to do what needs to be done.

In addition to these regular residential cleaning services, Ford also offers special cleaning like when a customer wants cleaning before moving in or out of a new residence or needs to clean out or tidy up their garage or storage building, she said.

If the customer wants, the contents can all be hauled away.

There are many reasons to use Klean-RUs, beyond their exceptional service, Ford said.

“For your security, our insured and bonded company provides our clients with trained and experienced staff committed to client satisfaction,” she said.

If customers are not satisfied with the service provided, Ford’s staff will come back at no charge and correct what needs to be corrected, she said. They have an A+ from the Better Business Bureau and do background checks and drug testing on all

of their employees for their clients’ safety and security.

Klean-R-Us employees are not allowed to open drawers or move paperwork on desks, Ford said. Their goal is to clean businesses or residences while also securing client privacy and safeguarding their belongings.

Monica treats her employees like they are family, and this only improves their work ethic, she said. Some of her employees have been with her for 15 years while others come from an hour away just to work for her.

The employees develop a relationship with her, Ford said, but also with the customers, especially residential properties.

"A lot of the older clients like it when the cleaning lady comes, considering her their friend,” Ford said. “She cleans the house but also takes time to visit with them.”

Ford has been told by some that this is the best job they have ever had, and this is because she treats them with respect and listens to them when they talk to her, she said.

“If you want to have a good relationship, you have to treat your people right,” Ford said. “You work harder if you know you are appreciated."

Klean-R-Us Janitorial Service Inc. serves about half of Oklahoma including Ada, Pauls Valley, McAlester, Durant, Clayton and Poteau, Ford said. Even though her team has grown to 45 people, Ford is still always looking for good, honest and hardworking employees who can self-motivate.

ummer evenings are wonderful times to have fun outside. The heat of the day is melting away, and the impending sunset brings cooler temperatures.

While there are many entertaining things to do outside in Ada during the summer, vibrant outdoor music scene tops the list.
