My name is Shawna Thomsen, a recent graudate of South Dakota State University (SDSU) with a B.F.A. in Interior Design, minor in Studio Arts, and an Art History certificate. I am a passionate and creative designer who approaches any challenge with a unique perspective. Over my four years at SDSU, I have learned how to collaborate with other designers, problem solve using innovative solutions, and how to use design principles to influence the project to excel client goals and expectations.

This labor and delivery unit optimize efficiency, safety, and comfort, but it will also serve to accommodate preferences of both the patients and providers. SITE RESEARCH

This new Labor and Delivery addition to the Harborview Medical Facility is located in Seatle, Washington. Harborview, owned by King County, traces its roots in 1877 when it operated as a single-structure, 10-bed hospital originally named “King County Hospital.”

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Design a labor and delivery center for through a visually engaging and inclusive design, reinforcing the institution’s mission of providing specialized care, and enhancing healthcare through biophilic principles and places of respite design theory.

IDEATION DEVELOPMENT

The focus of this design was to create a relaxing environment that supports both patients and staff . Ideation sketches are a crutial part of the design process.

FURNITURE FLOORPLAN

This floorplan aims to create efficiency amoung staff and easy wayfinding for patients. The breeze way connects the Labor and Delivery Unit to the main hospital across the street.

RECEPTION ENTRY

When patients and families enter the unit, they are welcomed at the reception. Warm colors and organic shapes and motifs make this space feel comfortable and interesting while fostering a sense of flow and ease.

The circulation map shows the differences between the public and private spaces. The reception up front is surrounded by administration and the staff lounge. The labor rooms, c-section, and triage is private behind security

The waiting area is a comfortable place for families and patients to relax and wait. The presence of a water wall transforms the area into a visually appealing and soothing space. The acoustical panel on the ceiling mimics water.

STAFF ROOM

The saff lounge was created with restoration in mind. The curved lines that can be seen in the waiting and reception areas are carried into this space. The connection to nature is seen through the large windows, natural patterns and motifs.

NURSE STATION

The curved ceiling element guides patients through the space. Motifs and natural colors and textures found in nature also add a biophilic elements. The nurse’s station provides an opportunity for staff to withdraw from the main flow of activity.

PATIENT ROOM

Several biophilic elements allow the environment to be perceived as safe, harmless, friendly, and inviting. Simulation of home conditions through comfortable furniture and materials, art, and views enhance patient comfort and well-being.

Symbolically, a peony represents prosperity, best wishes, and joy. This symbolic reference is used in patient rooms to create interest while also identifying the area for the patient and medical personnel specifically.

Windows, conditions that promote orientation and distraction, a view of or access to nature, can all have positive health effects.

Maintaining a comfortable temperature and airflow can help manage pain and discomfort during labor and regulating body temperature. It also creates a comfortable working environment for providers.

ever-growing population, that is attracting more attention each year which with the number of options for accommodating the interested visitors. Foreuse and sourcing sustainable materials to comply with the LEED v4.1 Ingredients credit from the ID+C Guide, this semester-long project included conbank building into a full-service hotel. The Palisade Hotel includes a dry bar (hair salon), wedding ceremony space, and rooftop bar to encourage the community and visitors in the downtown area.

SITE RESEARCH

The Palisade hotel and venue is located downtown Sioux Falls, SD Visitors and tourists of the area are in need of accomadation near the downtown area. Suurounded by parking, commercial buildings, and views of the Sioux River, this is the perfect location.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Overall the design of these spaces reflects the concept statement of Elegant Romance, with themes along the lines of modern meeting traditional touches. Creating a location that supports the newly weds from beginning to end of their wedding experience. Wedding planning can be stressful enough. Booking here allows the couple to be supported from the beginning of the wedding weekend to the end. The vision is to create a memorable experience for every visitor, and support the couple on one of the most important days of their lives.

FIRST FLOOR

The first floor features a large reception in the lobby to greet guests right away, lobby seating, a business center with collarborative workspace, and a resturant and bar. Guests can hold dinners in the restaurant such as a groomsmens supper the night before the wedding.

RECEPTION DESK

The reception desk is welcoming and is able to support visitors and staff. The sleek design creates a light modern feel with biophilia to create a connection to nature.

BUSINESS CENTER

The buisness center is able to support group or individual work. A large desk supports groups and smaller tables and couches support inidividuals. There are monitors and printers to support whatever needs the guests have.

ZITE ENTRY

Zite is the Palisades restaurant bar and grill. Zite is able to support anyone, or any group, for any meal. With various seating options, Zite can accomadate normal dinners, or events such as groomsmen suppers, brunches, or work events.

ZITE BAR

The Zite bar is a comfortable and unique space to grab a drink or bite to eat. The large windows allow in a lot of natural light into the space. The organic curves and elements also create a natural biophilic connection.

2ND FLOOR FURNITURE PLAN

The guest floor supports various layouts including a master guest suite, double queen suite, and single king beds. The master suite also supports a living room area for guests.

GUEST FLOOR HALLWAY

The guest floor hallway has a classy and light feel with easy wayfinding. Innovative technology within the door handle allows smart phones to gain a hotel key card access.

DOUBLE QUEEN SUITE

The double queen suite has a comfortable at home atmosphere to support groups or families. The kitchenette area creates counter space along with the desk top and tv stand.

The wardrobe and dresser supports plenty of storage space. The blinds provide privacy for guests and temperature control creates an at home atmosphere for guests.

MASTER SUITE BEDROOM

The master suite bedroom has a comfortable at home feel with a bright atmosphere to create a clean room for guests. Both rooms have their own bathrooms to create privacy for guests.

LIVING ROOM

The master suite living room is seperated from the bedroom area. The kitchen area also has a table and counter space for the guests. The room also features storage units and a desk.

9TH FLOOR FURNITURE PLAN

The 9th floor features a spa on one side, and a beauty bar/hair salon on the other. Each side features their own reception and unique elements for guests.

SPLIT ROCK SPA DRY BAR RECEPTION

The dry bar reception greets guests off the elevator. Welcoming them into the space and leading them to the waiting area.

MANICURE STATION

All amenities can be used by any guest, or can be reserved by wedding parties or groups. The beauty bar includes a manicure station, hair dry bar, pedicure station, and an area to do makeup and get ready for your event.

PEDICURE STATION

The pedicure station is next to the windows, allowing in natural light and allows guests to have views to outside. The stone and plants create a natural and relaxing atmosphere.

SPA RECEPTION

The spa on the 9th floor supports a reception, locker rooms, and massage rooms. The lobby has a small kitchenette for guests and staff. The natural pallete creates a relaxing atmosphere for guests.

COUPLES MASSAGE

The massage rooms have plenty of storage for staff, a sink for staff to wash their hands, hooks for guests robes, and massage tables. The happy couple can relax post wedding with a complimentary couples massage to kick off their honeymoon.

ROOFTOP FURNITURE PLAN

The rooftop splits in half to support a ceromony area, rooftop bar, and reception seating. The ceromony aisle can be moved to set up a dance floor and tables for reception guests.

CEROMONY AISLE

The ceromony aisle has views overlooking Sioux Falls. The ceromony area is able to be private from the bar side and creates a private romantic atmosphere for the wedding party and guests.

ROOFTOP BAR

The Zite rooftop bar is able to be reserved for any event, such as wedding receptions, dinners, and fundraising events. Wedding guests can hold their happy hour at the bar while setting up the dance floor on the other side.

As resources move the changing times. their years at SDSU, students feel comfortable students don’t know ports students and out resources, or utilize for staff. The redesign event space and Briggs

online, SDSU’s campus is wanting to rennovate their current library for times. Utilizing technology to bring people in and support students throughout SDSU, as well as the Brookings community. The goal is to create a space where comfortable and supported. The current library is underutilized because most know what the library offers or they don’t know who to ask. This design supstaff and makes it easy for students to collaborate, study alone, check utilize the technology. It also creates an efficient and supportive space redesign also strives to create more interest in the community as well. The Briggs Brew Cafe create event space for the Brookings community.

SITE

CONCEPT

The South Dakota State University campus in Brookings, SD, supports an average of 30,000 students from various backgrounds and cultures. Briggs Campus Library is at the heart of campus surrounded by lecture halls and supporting buildings.

DEVELOPMENT

This design creates a timeless pallete to support students and surrounding community. This pallette supports an envolving campus and a growing student population.

The entry has areas to support students just passing through the library in between class. The interactive digital map of campus allows users to touch the screen for more information about buildings on campus.

ENTRY SPACE TECHNOLOGY HUB

The technology hub has desks and monitors to support students, staff, study groups and classes.

This area has accomadations for students such as tv screens, whiteboards, and plenty of options for seating with any size of group.

COLLABORATION SPACE EVENT SPACE

This open space is an area to able to hold hold events, showcase students artwork, and also be a space for students to study and collaborate.
