WOODRIDGE – When Woodridge Police Department Sgt. Ray Moeller is not patrolling the streets or working at the office, he spends his time in an airport hangar fulfilling a dream he’s had for 20 years. Moeller is building a Steen Skybolt aerobatic biplane, a project he has been working on for the past three years. “I’ve always had a passion for flying,” the 49-year-old said. “It seems when you turn on the news, you are hearing about a shooting, a murder, a robbery, and I get enough of that at work. My outlet is working with my hands and building. Creating something from raw material is pretty cool.” Moeller reached his 25th year with the Woodridge Police Department in July. Although he originally thought

things that you are tired of hearing about good people being victims of not so good people, and I said to myself, ‘I feel like going out there and making a difference for those people who ended up becoming victims of the bad people.’” One aspect of law enforcement is mirrored in Moeller’s passion for flying, and this is one of the reasons he is drawn to the hobby, he said.

Most police officers are a tightknit group, and if you need the help of another officer, they are there standing beside you, and pretty much willing to lay down their own life for you, as you are for them. You don’t get
that in a lot of jobs.” Moeller’s passion for flight was inspired by his father, who was a pilot and a surgeon. “I would go flying with my dad and I decided I wanted to learn how, so when I was a teen I was able to use his airplane and learn to fly,” Moeller said. “I’ve been flying since I was very young, so it’s in my blood to become part of the machine.” Moeller said his father was introduced to flying by his uncle, who was a bomber pilot in World War II. “Once you get up in the air, it’s a very peaceful place usually,” Moeller said. “It’s very satisfying to look down at the world and get a different perspective on it. It doesn’t matter what’s going on during your day; when you are up in the air, you are in your own world.” Moeller spends eight to 15 hours per week building his airplane in a hangar at Lewis University Airport in

THE PERIODONTAL EXAM Q: What happens in a periodontal exam? A: The goal of the periodontal exam is to assess the health of your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. As part of that assessment, your dentist will probe along the gum line to measure the depth of the pockets between the gum and the tooth. The dentist will use a narrow instrument called a periodontal probe, a rule of sorts, with lines marked in millimeters. Abnormally deep pockets are a sign of periodontal, or gum, disease. The dentist will also be observant about whatever bleeding occurs during the exam. Bleeding generally indicates inflammation. Swollen, red and bleeding gums may alert a person to a gum problem, but clinical measurements throughout the mouth are necessary to determine if true periodontal pocketing has developed. The periodontal exam also includes observation and documentation of the color and texture of gum tissue, the extent of gum recession, evidence of any tooth grinding and a measurement of tooth mobility. Your dentist will record all these observations not only to determine whether you have the beginnings of gum disease, but also to set a baseline of statistics and observations against which to compare future exams. 1. Road project needs additional funding
A change order to increase the amount of funds budgeted for a road reconstruction in Woodridge was approved by the village board Thursday night. The board approved an additional expenditure not to exceed $410,000 for the road project, which involves Hickory Court, Autumn Drive and Two Paths Drive in the Mendingwall subdivision. During construction, contractor James D. Fiala Paving Company Inc. discovered more extensive work was required to the roads to prevent premature deterioration, according to a news release from the village. The adjusted project cost is an estimated $1.45 million. The roadwork continues to progress and is expected to be complete by late September, according to the village.

Also Thursday, the village awarded a bid from D. Ryan Tree and Landscape Services to remove ash trees and stumps on parkways and other village-owned property.
The trees have been deemed unsalvageable due to the emerald ash borer infestation. While the total cost of the project could change based on the number and size of trees removed, the estimated cost is $195,150. Five bids were received for the project, with the second lowest bid at $255,517. The bid also secures pricing for private property owners in the village who may need to remove trees or stumps. The price is based on per inch of diameter of the tree. Residents are entitled to the price $25 per inch or $125 for stump removal, according to the village. The project, expected to begin this fall, is part of an accelerated effort to remove the unsalvageable trees after extreme cold this past winter accelerated the decline of infected trees.
3. 257,000-square-foot warehouse proposed
Developers of the Union Pointe Business Park on Thursday asked the Woodridge Village Board permission to move forward with Phase 3 of the business park at the northwest corner of Woodward Avenue and Interstate 55. The board gave developers the green light to move forward with a proposed 256,880-square-foot office/ warehouse building in the 80-acre development, which is also home to the Orbus Exhibit and Display Group headquarters and an Edward Don warehouse.

He said the Yomechas has made it easier for him to plan activities with his children. “If I’m going to camp out, I’m not really going to be able to organize something like that on my own,” he said. “It gives you all these things fixed. It’s almost like your opting out not to go. Sometimes you just need to be pushed.” Seelander said members can attend as many or as few events as they want, but, for him, the more he got involved, the more he wanted to participate. “You enjoy it so much, you want to make time for it,” he said.

WOODRIDGE – The Yomechas Federation has scheduled a slate of parent-child events for the 2014-15 season. The group serves several towns in the western suburbs, including Woodridge. According to the Yomechas Federation, the program features parent and child activities such as camping, service-learning projects, arts and crafts, music and storytelling. Federation Scout John Seelander of Woodridge said, unlike a group like Boy Scouts, the Yomechas is meant for a parent of each child to participate. “This is one-on-one,” he said. “It really is building a strength and bond between a parent and child.” There are three age groups: the Pioneer program for preschoolers, Guides and Princesses for kindergarten to fourth grade and Trailblazers for fifth grade and older. Seelander said the Guides and Princesses is the most popular group with about 1,300 members in the area. He also estimated Woodridge residents make up about 20 percent of the members. Some of the activities planned for this year include campouts, a fishing derby, bowling event, roller skating event, pumpkin hunt and

WOODRIDGE – Home sales in Woodridge were steady comparing July to June, but median home prices dipped by about 16 percent over the same time period, according to data from the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors. In July, 24 homes were sold in town at a median price of $252,500 – down from $299,900 in June, when 19 homes were sold in Woodridge. July’s 24 home sales in Woodridge is down slightly compared to 30 homes sold in July 2013, according to the data. Total house sales in Downers Grove were up in July over the previous month, but lagged behind sales in the same month a year ago, according to the data. The village saw 68 single-family home sales this July, compared with 51 this June and 79 in July 2013. This July, the median sale price in Downers Grove was $363,500, compared to $364,900 in July last year. This July’s sales were up 13 percent over June 2014’s median price of $320,500. In nearby Westmont, both total home sales and median sales price in Westmont increased in July. In July, 20 houses were sold in town at a median price of $272,500 – up $20,500 from the $252,000 median sales price in June, when 15

to stay true to the location as well, when I’m capturing the story. “I want you to feel like you’ve been there, and not just see the picture.” Cepele’s work also regularly features lighthouses, midwest locations, Chicago and wildlife. To be included in the festival, artists submitted work to a panel of judges, according to Festival Director Amy Amdur. One hundred thirty-one were selected for the sale. Amdur’s production company took the festival’s reigns five years ago and expanded it to its two-day format. “We’ve got all kinds of artists; we’ve got all kinds of price points,” she said. “Everything you see at the show is for sale. I tell people to buy what they love and what makes them feel good. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to feel good.” Amdur added the fest is family-friendly and handicapped accessible. To that point, there’s a children’s coloring area, along with a setup for shoppers to make their own spin art. The festival does not have food vendors in an effort to encourage shoppers to eat at the existing downtown restaurants, she said. “To be able to be on the Main Street in the downtown, just the setting alone is cool,” she said.

DOWNERS GROVE – Visitors to the Downtown Downers Grove Art Festival will have even more to see, hear and taste this weekend as the annual event expands to include Curtiss Street and adds a beer and wine tent for the first time, joining the live music stage. Art lovers will be able to shop from booths displaying work from 131 artists from across the country and around the globe, including two from Downers Grove – painter Lisa Domaszewicz and photographer Jessica Cepele. Shoppers may remember Domaszewicz’s booth from a year ago, full of birds and other bright wildlife painted on square wooden blocks. “They’re fun,” she said. “People always smile when they walk by my booth.” Before painting, Domaszewicz adds a layer of modeling paste for texture, almost giving the wood surface a carved look. “Then I’ll do different layers of colors,” she said. “And I like to use a lot of metallics. My art is very colorful and bold and vibrant.” Painting on wood, as opposed to canvas, is both time-saving and more cost-effective, she said. “So then people can afford it, and I just like being different,” she added. Like Domaszewicz, Jessica Cepele also operated a booth and sold her work at last year’s fest. The 2010 School of the Art Institute of Chicago graduate specializes in landscapes, notably in a series of striking images from a trip to the Grand Canyon. “I like to capture the story of a place,” she said. “Not just an image, but the story of that place. That’s what I find interesting. It’s a challenge. And it’s through my eyes, so as much as it’s an image of that location, it’s ultimately like a self portrait. I’m also trying

This year, 669 students are part of the Class of 2015. • From the most basic course offerings in the ’60s, students now select from more than 200, including 27 rigorous AP courses. • We’ve come a long way from the slide rule. This year, onein-five students will be part of a 1:1 Learning program, having access to a wireless device on a continuous basis. • From 31 extracurricular programs in 1964, we now offer 65 competitive and enrichment clubs and activities. We also have more than 27 athletic programs for both boys and girls. Recent state championships in speech (2012) and boys volleyball (2013) have brought tremendous pride to our community. While much has changed since 1964, our focus has not. Our dedicated and skilled teachers, 90 percent of whom hold advanced degrees, challenge our students and spur on their academic success. Our school is continually ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top schools in the state and the nation and year after year, our students are Illinois State Scholars and National Merit scholar recipients. Further proof of our success is what our students accomplish after high school. On Sept. 25, we will reveal and induct six inaugural members to our Distinguished Alumni program. We received more than 50 nominations, and it was energizing to learn about the different paths our graduates have pursued. From 1964 to 2014, our students have built a rich tradition of excellence in academics, performing arts, athletics and activities. Opportunities abound for our students and we are excited to see what the future has to offer as we build upon that reputation. It’s clear that our past is golden – and more importantly, so is our future.

I want to know why they had live music that played in the library parking lot during Rotary [Grove]Fest and did not play in the Park District bandshell, where it’s designed for that, and the bandshell cost the taxpayers over $1 million. It’s rather curious.

On July 2, our beloved young dog, Jessie, was hit on Woodridge Drive at Echo Park. It was an unfortunate accident but fatal. My husband had no vehicle, called me and before I arrived, a wonderful gentleman stopped and took them to the vet hospital. I was told he was employed at the nearby grade school. Later, he remained at the hospital until I arrived to be with him. Sadly, we did not get his name. I hope he knows how truly thankful we are. He made us realize there are people out there that really care and look out for others. With all the bad news we hear now from the media, there is sunshine. We will be forever grateful.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING The Village of Downers Grove will offer electronics recycling on Saturday, September 6, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The drop-off location is at Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue, in the employee parking lot at the rear of the building at the intersection of Curtiss Street and Mackie Place. BRANCH PICKUP PROGRAM The Village will begin its final round of branch pick up for the 2014 Branch Pickup Program for single-family homes located within the Village of Lisle’s corporate limits. This program is free of charge.

The pick up areas and dates are as follows: • Homes located north of the Burlington Northern Train Tracks are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 8th. • Homes located between the Burlington Northern Train Tracks and Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 15th. • Homes located south of Maple Avenue are scheduled for pickup during the week of September 22nd. Branch piles must be placed in the front parkway (not behind the resident’s property) by 7:00 a.m. on the Monday of the scheduled pickup week, but no earlier than the Friday before. We ask that homeowners adhere to the following guidelines when preparing their branch piles: • The Branch Pickup Program is intended for private residential branch trimming only and is not intended for whole trees or shrubs that have been removed. Material removed or trimmed by a contractor must be hauled away by the contractor. • For safer and easier handling, branches should be bundled with natural twine or rope – no nylon, plastic or metal. • Bundles are not to exceed 3 feet tall x 3 feet wide x 5 feet long and no more than 50 pounds. They should be lined out as close to the street as possible with cut ends facing the street. Single branches up to 8 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length should be placed separately from bundles. • Thorny material, vines, roots, stumps or landscape material (grasses, perennials, railroad ties, lumber) are not accepted. Once Village crews pass a residence during a scheduled week, they will not return. Material can be disposed of with the Waste Hauler in yard waste bags with yard waste stickers attached. September is Hunger Action Month and Lisle is getting involved by hosting a food drive to help benefit local pantries and Northern Illinois Food Bank. The Food Bank provide nutritious food to more than 80 food pantries and feeding programs throughout DuPage County, including three food pantries in the Village of Lisle. The Downers Grove South senior has a passion for marine life and conservation, and got a first-hand look this summer at how over fishing sharks for their dorsal fins has led to dwindling numbers of some species. The fins are largely shipped to China, where they are the main ingredient in the pricey and popular soup. Kazmierczak spent a week in Belize as part of a teen expedition organized by Earth Watch. Every morning, she and the rest of the team joined Jasmine Valentine, a Ph.D student from the School of Ma-

rine and Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook University, to track and research sharks off the coast. Tasks involved laying Baited remote underwater video stations on the ocean floor, about 30 to 90 feet down, she said. Then the crew would check various shark lines and nab any sharks caught that day for cataloging, tagging and release. The day would end with some fishing for
shark bait and retrieving the BRUVS for review. BRUVS record underwater video for about 85 minutes, which Kazmierczak and others would review to identify and record the types of species in the water. The trip “definitely changed the way that I see animals and conservation in general,” she said. “I learned a lot about how Marine life works and how we’re destroying our planet slowly and definitely dwindling the population of sharks.” The data allows Valentine to determine the health of the shark population in the area, as well as the health and numbers of the other fish populations that sharks eat. Kazmierczak said they caught seven nurse sharks during the week, but none of the reef sharks that are prized for
their fins – indicative of the decreased population. “Last year, she only caught one or two reef sharks,” she said. “When I went [this summer], she hadn’t caught any.” Scientists from Stony Brook University have been conducting research around the islands of Belize for about a decade to inform and assist the Belizean government in creating legislation to protect the shark species found in their waters, she said. “They do want to make it illegal, but since it’s such an important industry in Belize, they haven’t,” she said. “Rather than stopping it, they’re just trying to figure out a way to stabilize the population of sharks.” Kazmierczak will begin applying to colleges this fall and said she’s hoping to study environmental science.

Joseph Academy closes DuPage County location By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com High-needs children living in the DuPage County area will have to go elsewhere to get specialized help now that a local nonprofit school has announced its closure. In a letter to DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin dated Aug. 19, Joseph Academy Founder and CEO Mike Schack addressed the end of the school’s DuPage County program. “After two years, we have not been able to sustain the Joseph Academy program in the former DuPage County Youth Home,” he wrote. The academy, which opened in December 2012 in Wheaton, served students with emotional, behavioral and learning challenges who were referred to the program through their school districts. Schack said his letter was sent “with a heavy heart,” citing a lack of federal and state funding for special education and low enrollment as the cause of the closing. Joseph Academy, a school for children with severe emotional, behavioral or learning problems, closed its DuPage County location Monday. said the program hoped to have 18 to 20 students attend the school annually but only served eight a year ago. The academy began falling behind on its bills, owing nearly $12,000 in rent to its land-
lord, DuPage County, until the board voted to waive the backlog and allow the program to operate rent-free through the end of September. “The DuPage Board has been most understanding
and helpful through excellent maintenance and rental reductions during these years,” Schack wrote. “Joseph Academy was blessed with such a solid landlord. We are very grateful for the chance you
provided and stand ready to serve in any capacity should a future need arise for an educational program in the facility.” Schack also stated the school submitted a grant proposal to Gov. Pat Quinn’s budget manager for the addition of a boarding school component, but receiving the grant appeared “a remote possibility.” The academy’s final day of occupation was Sept. 1. Cronin announced the closure publicly at the County Board meeting Aug. 26. “This school year, Joseph Academy locations across Chicagoland graduated 43 students,” he said. “The teachers and staff helped turn around the lives of those young people and their families. We believe in their devotion to serving this unique population of students with special education needs. We wish them well indeed, as they continue to operate Joseph Academy in other locations throughout the region.” The school also has sites in Des Plaines, Hometown and Melrose Park. County spokesperson Johnna Kelly said the children in the program were offered alternative placements and the county is looking at filling the vacancy left by the academy internally.

Old Vilnius Café imports taste of Lithuania DARIEN – Although I knew nothing about Lithuanian food, my companion was thrilled when I asked him to join me for dinner at Old Vilnius Café, named after the country’s capital. Inside the door sits a gift shop full of Lithuanian wares, many celebrating the 1992 bronze-medal Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Mugs, T-shirts and amber jewelry line the shelves. The shop opens up into a small deli offering traditional candy, Lithuanian magazines and a variety of goodies to take home. Beyond the gift shop, the intimate dining room is a mix of cozy and elegant, with black padded leather chairs and dark wood furnishings lit softly by wall sconces. Old Vilnius Café serves Lithuanian and Eastern European cuisine, with dishes made in-house from scratch. During our visit, the waiter apologized when my companion ordered zeppelins, because the traditional dish of grated potato dumplings stuffed with minced meat had sold out, but he gladly offered a fried version as a substitute for the boiled. After reading through the menu, I decided to start with an appetizer of fried Lithuanian bread served with a warm cheese and garlic sauce. The strips of crispy bread were piled into a large bowl and smothered in gooey cheese. It was delicious, but very rich. I was glad to have someone helping me dig in before our main courses arrived. My companion sipped on warm red beet soup, borszcz, which I sampled and really enjoyed. A cold variation of the soup also is an option. Although our waiter tried to warn us, we ordered much more food than we could finish, but the place was a meat and potato lover’s paradise that proved hard to resist. Because it was my first time eating Lithuanian food, I

They came with a side of sour cream and bacon tidbits, as did many items on the menu. The savory dish was a delicious balance of starchy potatoes, salty bacon and cool sour cream. My eager dining companion, much more educated about the cuisine thanks to fond childhood memories of many of the dishes, ordered a combination plate to taste
a bit of everything. His plate arrived loaded with fried zeppelin, potato sausage, kugelis, Lithuanian sausage and sauerkraut. Of course, bacon and sour cream added their decadent flourish. My favorite was the kugelis, a baked potato cross between cake and pudding. It reminded me of twice-baked potatoes, but the best I’d ever had. In addition to a wide range of European chicken, beef and
pork entrees, the menu offers several all-American options such as chicken wings, Caesar salad and a bacon cheddar Angus burger. We ended up boxing half of our dinner to take home, but if I hadn’t been so stuffed, I would have loved to try a slice of raspberry cheesecake or chocolate lava cake. Cocktails, Lithuanian beer and wine also are featured. Old Vilnius Café combines
ethnic cuisine with a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of options for Lithuanian food fans and those less familiar with the hearty dishes.

Jack would throw a football to his older brother Brad. He’d catch it, and the game was on. One day, they hoped, they’d be doing it in a real stadium wearing real football jerseys. That is precisely what happened Friday in Benet’s season-opening 26-16 win against Downers Grove South at Benedictine University. Brad, a se-
nior, rushed for three touchdowns and 127 yards on the same night Jack, a sophomore, started his first varsity game. “It’s probably the coolest game of my life, I’d say, so far,” Brad said. “It was just awesome for me, for Jack, for my family to have this experience. That’s great.” Brad ran for touchdowns of six and seven yards in the first half as Benet grabbed an early 19-0 lead in the first half. He added a 34-yard score in the fourth quarter. Jack completed his first
five passes and ran for 32 yards on his first offensive play. He wound up completing 9-of-18 passes for 83 yards. “As a sophomore, he’s just going to get better and better,” Benet coach Pat New said of Jack. “I expected him to make a couple of mistakes because you’re a sophomore and that‘s what happens. He rose to the challenge. He’s a great competitor. I have total faith that he’ll just improve throughout the year.” The game was halted for more than an hour in the sec-
ond quarter because of lightning, and it was after the storm had passed that Downers Grove South came alive. Ryan Taylor scored on the Mustangs’ first possession of the second half, finishing off a 63-yard drive with a two-yard TD run. A 30-yard fumble return by Eric Denby for a score and a 36-yard field goal by Riley Heavey, all in the third quarter, closed Benet’s lead to 19-16. But even with two interceptions and a touchdown-saving tackle by Denby in the fourth
quarter, the Mustangs weren’t able to score again. Jacob Baker, a senior, made his debut at tailback and rushed for 71 yards. “Jacob ran hard,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “It was his first night at tailback. We saw some good things. We’d like to see him do a few more things, but that will come with some experience. We’re asking a kid who was a quarterback and a tight end last year to play tailback. We like him. We’re going to stick with him.”

By JEFF DEGRAW msleditorial@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – David Edwards missed a significant amount of time last season before returning for Downers Grove North’s quarterfinal playoff game. He made up for lost time in this year’s season opener, which started Friday night and ended Saturday after weather delays. North won 3120 as Edwards rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. “He’s ready to go,” North head coach John Wander said. “We have a three-year quarterback and we’re expecting
huge things from him. He did a nice job.” Edwards’ 6-foot-8 frame coupled with the Trojans’ sly option offense is a tough combo to stop. “He falls forward for three to four yards every carry,” first-year Lockport coach Dan Starkey said of Edwards. The end result was a plus for the Trojans, but it didn’t come without some turbulent moments. Before the delay Friday night, North’s initial drive stalled at the 25-yard line with a failed fourth down attempt. On the next play, Lockport senior quarterback Jeremy Quade ran 70 yards to the five
yard line. Then he capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown run Saturday evening to take a 6-0 lead with 6:08 to go in the first quarter. “We’re a very young defense and we need to get better,” Wander said. “The key to the game was we didn’t really turn the ball over. If we play that type of game with our offense and don’t turn the ball over, we give ourselves a good chance to win.” However, that was the last Porter lead of the game. North came right back with a 66-yard drive, with Edwards gaining 50 of those yards on five carries to take a 7-6 lead with 2:18 remaining in
the first quarter. Lockport drove to North’s seven yard line, but the drive came up empty. Edwards punched in a two-yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive to put the Trojans ahead 14-6. Another Edwards touchdown just before halftime made it 21-6 and the lead expanded to 28-6 early in the third before Lockport scored again. “The kids are learning a new system with new coaches,” Starkey said. “We have to clean up the mistakes, we had opportunities, but I’m certainly proud of this team with the effort they gave.”

Outlook: The Redwings graduated six starters from a team that made it to the state quarterfinals for the third consecutive year. Those kinds of losses might mean a rebuilding year for most programs, but Benet is not like most programs. The squad enters the season with six players who saw plenty of action last year. Rachael Fara, last year’s kills leader, is back and is committed to play in college at Northwestern. Other players with college offers include Natalie Canulli (Penn State), Meghan Weber (Wright State), and Tiffany Clark (Michigan, second in digs last season), who plays libero in club but will switch to outside hitter for the Redwings. Sara Neilson, Maria Cyvas and Dana Griffin return after playing extensively last year.
