WOODRIDGE – The sixth-graders at Meadowview Elementary School in Woodridge were in for a special treat on their last day of school June 10, all thanks to two of their peers. When it was time for students Jacky Gomez and Trevor Gaspar to pick a topic for their Genius Hour project, it was easy: ice cream, because they both love it. So when the vice president of supply chain for Oberweis stopped by the school on its last day, students not only got to learn all about ice cream, they also got to taste some of the frozen treat themselves. Genius Hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and ideas, modeled after Google’s “20% Time,� where employees are encouraged to take on projects away from their main responsibilities. For one hour each week, students undertake these passion projects. “It’s to allow students to tap into their creativity and give them an opportunity to learn more about something they’re passionate about,� said Melissa Love, learning resource center director. Jacky and Trevor spent six weeks working on their Genius
doing their research, they decided to send an email to a local company to learn about its history of ice cream. Oberweis agreed to send a representative to the school to talk to Jacky, Trevor and their peers. “I read it, and I was like, ‘I’d love to do this,’� Vice President of Supply Chain Pete Alle said, adding it’s important to the company to be a part of its communities. During his visit, Alle discussed how Oberweis makes its ice cream and answered students’ questions. Jacky asked how new flavors are chosen. Alle explained those decisions often come from the customers themselves who sometimes ask for certain flavors. Trevor wanted to know what the cows eat. The answer was alfalfa and corn. Students get creative through Genius Hour project
D-58 talks future upgrades DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove Grade School District 58 is preparing for a summer of improvements. The Board of Education received an update about scheduled summer improvements June 8. Rick Bubula, director of buildings and grounds, said in an interview after the meeting that one of the biggest projects going on this summer is the replacement of carpets at Belle Aire and El Sierra elementary schools. Carpet is being torn out at Belle Aire and crews likely will move to El Sierra next month. Bubula said the carpets in the two schools are 33 years old. There are 13 classrooms at Belle Aire getting carpets torn out and 19 at El Sierra. The project is expected to cost $180,000. Superintendent Kari Cremascoli said in an interview
after the meeting that floor replacement in district elementary schools has been an ongoing project for the last three years and that this is the last stage of that replacement. Another big project occurring during the summer will be the repaving of the south parking lot at O’Neill Middle School. “That project will be done in early July,” Bubula said. The project is expected to cost $110,000. Additionally, swings at Highland and Lester elementary schools will be replaced. The district has not received the new equipment yet, but Bubula said it will be installed as soon as it arrives. “The swings are extremely old. We maintained them in good shape, but it’s time to replace the entire unit,” he said. The board also discussed long-term projects at the meeting. Cremascoli said admin-
istrators like to periodically have conversations about facilities projects with the board to keep board members up-todate on facilities. She said improvements to the science labs at the district middle schools have been “on our list of needs now for a couple of years.” The district is going to wait until it finishes the new science curriculum before deciding what is needed in the classrooms. That way, Cremascoli said, the district won’t purchase any unnecessary equipment or leave out equipment that might end up being essential. The only other item discussed at the meeting was the administrative office. The district uses two offices, but it would like to get down to one. “We wanted to look at these, but at this point, our finances don’t accommodate making any changes there,” Cremascoli said.

Shaw Media to acquire more weekly newspapers SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DIXON – Shaw Media, owner of the Suburban Life, announced today that it is purchasing Record Newspapers Inc. from Jeff and Kathy Farren. Based in Yorkville, The Record Newspapers include the Kendall County Record in Yorkville, the Ledger-Sentinel in Oswego, the Plano Record and the Sandwich Record, as well as affiliated websites. “We are proud to welcome The Record Newspapers to our growing portfolio of family-owned, community-focused media operations,” Shaw Media President John Rung said. “We look forward to continuing the Farrens’ tradition of quality local journalism, while expanding the Ledger-Sentinel’s and Record’s presence through digital formats.”
The transaction is expected to close June 26. “We have always worked hard to provide extensive local news coverage of our communities. So we are pleased with Shaw Media’s commitment to continue that level of coverage for our readers,” Kathy Farren, Record editor, said. Founded in 1864, the Kendall County Record was purchased by the Farrens in 1973. The Farrens founded the Plano Record in 1976. They acquired the Oswego Ledger in 1979 and the Fox Valley Sentinel in 1980. The two papers were consolidated and called the Ledger-Sentinel. The Sandwich Record was launched by the Farrens in 1985. “The decision to sell was a difficult one,” publisher Jeff Farren said, but he added,

The board hired Chicago-based Alix Partners with a 4-3 vote June 11. The vote took place two days after Thomas Glaser, senior vice president of administration and treasurer, and Lynn Sapyta, assistant vice president of financial affairs and controller, were placed on leave pending the results of an ongoing investigation. Board policy states investment in such local government investment pools cannot exceed 5 percent. The board was split in approving the contract, with newly elected reform trustees and Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton voting in favor and longer-serving trustees Erin Birt, Joesph Wozniak and Dianne McGuire against it. McGuire said the pre-election board approved all investments and should
have noticed and corrected the spending earlier. She also said she supported investing in funds with higher promised returns and that the previous board was scheduled to consider easing restrictions in a canceled April meeting. “We have made a rush to judgment on the two that are on administrative leave,” McGuire said. “I am not convinced this is a step we have to take.” Both Birt and Wozniak questioned the cost of the firm, which is charging a $685-per-hour rate for Dischner to oversee the project. The college gave Alix a $15,000 retainer and the firm will work hourly, Dischner said, making an extra effort to be efficient in charging the school. He said the work could require at least two full-time Alix employees. Political gridlock delays hope of property tax relief Homeowners, small businesses and families in Illinois have suffered for years under high property taxes – particularly in the suburbs where taxes are rising faster than inflation and outpacing home values. To alleviate this costly burden I sponsored Gov. Bruce Rauner’s property tax reform proposal that freezes property taxes and increases local control over costs. In the latest study, over a five-year period Illinois had the third-highest residential property tax rate in the nation, behind only New Jersey and New Hampshire, according to the Tax Foundation and the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois’ May 2015 report. Other studies show Illinois having the second-highest property tax rates in the nation. This is unacceptable. Illinois taxpayers deserve better. Sadly, the consequence of high property taxes is many families and businesses have been forced to leave our state, and more will follow if we don’t do something. Recently, the Senate convened a “Committee of the Whole” to receive testimony and ask questions about property tax reform. Senate Democrat lawmakers invited testimony from a number of credentialed and educated panelists, including tax experts and education and local government representatives. However, glaringly absent from the panel were those most dramatically impacted by Illinois’ high property taxes – taxpayers. I recognize how a property tax freeze would impact local schools and services, but our proposal, Senate Bill 1046, would give local governments the tools to lower their costs. It also empowers taxpayers. If residents want more funding for education, libraries or other services they have the authority to raise taxes through referendum. High property taxes is the number one call I get from my constituents in the 41st district, yet Democrats refuse to come to the negotiating table to talk about relief for Illinois homeowners and employers. Constituents ask me how it’s possible for their property taxes to constantly go up, even when the value of their house has gone down. Clearly, the answer our state has been giving them hasn’t been good enough for quite some time. It is time we stop stalling, and start doing what is best for the state of Illinois. It is my hope we can work together in bipartisan fashion in the coming weeks to develop a solution that offers much-needed property tax relief for hardworking Illinois families and businesses.

The Downers Grove Village Council plans to build a police station and Village Hall on Ogden Avenue. They have solid walls at the place they are at now. They should get a price to have work done where they’re at now. It’s centrally located, and I wonder if they’re moving it over to Ogden Avenue to be close to where they live. They need to cut back on money spending, and it doesn’t cost $60 million to renovate those buildings. So quit wasting our money.

This is in response to the person who said [Gov. Bruce] Rauner was elected governor, not dictator. Well, the state of Illinois needs a dictator. We don’t need any more of these Democrats who wouldn’t recognize a balanced budget if it bit them. What we need is a guy who is going to go out and get the balanced budget and go after these people who are always asking for more, more, more – these public service unions. It used to be that teachers made a small amount of money, and people felt sorry for them. But now they’re trying to hide the fact that the average teacher makes over $100,000 a year. How many of their students’ parents make that kind of money? [Rauner] could do a better job if he just showed those free spending Democrats the door.

I’m pregnant and [I] can’t even walk in my subdivision, sit in my yard or open my windows because so many of our neighbors have lawn chemical treatments every month. nlurz@shawmedia.com A previously redacted report released by the College of DuPage Board of Trustees shows the school’s former WDCB radio station manager may have known about an investigation of an employee who allegedly stole thousands from the college years before senior administration learned of the possible wrongdoing. John Valenta The board unanimously approved releasing the independent report by Williams Montgomery and John, Ltd. to the public during its June 11 special meeting. The school hired the firm in February to investigate whether Elmhurst College notified the College of
DuPage after learning of then-WDCB employee John Valenta’s criminal behavior at Elmhurst. Valenta, who worked as the WDCB station engineer from 1979 to 2014, is charged with stealing more than $100,000 from the station after allegedly filing false invoices for parts and work performed by his company, Broadcast Technologies. Valenta’s employment continued despite his being convicted of similar offenses at Elmhurst College, the report stated – even though former WDCB manager Scott Wager may have known about the previous investigation. The 2011 investigation found crews were not present on days Valenta claimed they were performing services and equipment supposedly purchased
by Elmhurst College through Broadcast Technologies did not exist at the school radio station. Phone records and an interview with Caroline Krause, assistant director of campus security at Elmhurst College, indicated she spoke to the College of DuPage Police Department over the phone Jan. 31, 2011, and Feb. 1, 2011, to alert the school it was investigating Valenta for fraud, the report stated. However, the College of DuPage officer she spoke to – whose name is redacted in the report – did not log the call in the department’s Computer Aided Dispatch System – a breach in department policy. On Feb. 1, an officer contacted Krause and said he looked into the matter and was “dismissive of her concerns,” according to the report. The report stated it “appears most
likely that Wager assuaged any concerns by telling [redacted officer] that the college’s internal controls would not allow such a fraud to take place at COD.” The report went on to state there was “credible information” indicating that around March 2011, an employee at WDCB – whose name was also redacted – informed Wager she saw a news report of an investigation concerning Valenta. Wager “looked like a ghost” when he saw it, the report stated. The same employee said she then saw Wager and Valenta meet days later behind closed doors, and assumed the matter was addressed. College of DuPage’s response to discoveries made years later indicate no top administrator knew about the fraud before December 2013, according to the report. In 2012, management of WDCB was transferred to the Marketing and Communications Department, headed by Joe Moore. After “generally acceptable” performance reviews through his career, Wager was not able to meet

Upon taking temporary control of the station, Moore began to question Valenta’s actions, particularly frequent overtime charges. Moore later shared his concerns with new station manager Dan Bindert, hired Oct. 28, 2013. Bindert also noticed several irregularities, including once when he was driving to work and heard the station go off air. He called Valenta immediately, who texted he was “on it” before service was restored. “In retrospect, it is incredible
to Bindert that there could have been a failure and that Valenta could have responded to it so quickly,” the report stated. In December 2013, the engineer of another radio station warned Bindert to take a closer look at Valenta, citing past problems. Bindert also was advised the transmitter the college used was known as “bulletproof” and one that “rarely breaks down.” However, Valenta frequently said transmitter and power supply issues were the source of problems requiring purchases of parts or equipment. There was also no record of a transmitter purchase by Broadcast Technologies from transmitter company Harris Technologies, according to the report.

Flavorful roasted tomato sauce adds zest to rich meatballs crowned with whipped ricotta. Pancetta and fresh arugula team up in this wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizza, sporting houseping and local honey. We left room for dessert, made mozzarella. Next up had to be woodfired pizza, so we decided on the pancetta and arugula combination, which arrived with a tasty, hand-formed crust drizzled with olive oil, and showing the tell-tale light charring on the edges. Prepared Neapolitan style, it had delectable smatterings of house-made mozzarella to contrast with the pancetta – an Italian spin on cured bacon – along with tomatoes, garlic, oregano and lemon. It was covered in fresh, baby arugula, a wonderfully peppery green.
but next time, we plan on two pizzas and some more of the creative vegetables and salads on the menu such as sugar snap peas prepared with shallots, garlic, mint, whipped ricotta and extra virgin olive oil, or the Tuscan black kale with pear, sunflower seeds, radish, candied dates and lemon. Both pasta and pizza crust are available gluten-free, and the restaurant offers a varied menu for children. As for dessert, we loved the Italian pudding and sorbet combo, an abundance of rich-

WHEATON – A contemporary wood plank facade is the sleek new wrapping for the latest restaurant enterprise of chef-owner Brian Goewey, who named Gia Mia after his youngest daughter. It opened in downtown Wheaton in April and specializes in wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta dishes and small plates, all ideal for sharing the inventive fresh flavors the chef already is known for at fire + wine in Glen Ellyn, where he’s been a partner. Gia Mia describes itself as a pizza bar that emphasizes farm-to-fork Italian cooking. The interior features pale shades of wood and brick that set a warm tone, along with dangling, industrial-chic bulbs for light. A crowd set a convivial tone in the front dining room the weeknight we visited. The Blackhawks were playing a game running up to the finals, and a television there and one at the bar kept interested fans up on the score. We opted for the mellow bar area, which offers lots of stools, and a cozy dining space of its own, all the better to watch the action at the pizza oven. The controlled inferno holds court in all its red-mosaic-tiled glory in the corner and has ringside seating for diners. The wine list is extensive and offers some plucky suggestions off the beaten path, such as an Austrian white – Grüner Veltliner – for a light summer aperitif. The mixologists also proffer craft beer selections. We opened with a smallplate offering of veal meatballs basking in a zesty roasted tomato sauce and topped with little caps of whipped ricotta. The creamy cheese mimicked the velvety texture of the mild-flavored, finely ground meat. We’re glad we tried one of the unusual vegetable dishes: charred cauliflower. The delicate roasted veggie provided the perfect canvas for a palette of flavors drawn from green and black olives, radicchio, parsley, pine nut crumb top-

jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Caroline Hedgcock excels in all aspects of softball, but she definitely has one part of the game she enjoys best. The Downers Grove South junior is an excellent pitcher and just set the school record for RBIs in a season, but she would prefer to dominate games with her arm rather than her bat. “To be honest, it’s gotten to the point where pitching is my job and hitting is kind of like the extra bonus,” Hedgcock said. “As a pitcher, it’s kind of like the only offensive position where you can get an out and help your team single-handedly. “I like pitching more. Pitching is my job and at the end of the day I’m more happy with my pitching. If I don’t throw a good game, I’m more upset about that than hitting because hitting is like the bonus.” For a pitcher who also happens to hit (which not all softball pitchers do), Hedgcock certainly did a lot of damage in the batter’s box. She batted .543 this season with a program record 68 RBIs. She also hit 10 home runs, part of a season in which 29 of her 57 hits went for extra bases. “She’s very aggressive up there, and she’s got a great eye,” Downers Grove South head coach Ron Havelka said. “If a pitch is a little off the corner, she’ll take it. She’s pretty patient up there.” As much as Hedgcock impressed at the plate, the threeyear varsity player did the

same as a lefty in the pitching circle. Opposing batters had just a .140 average against Hedgcock and she surrendered just 47 hits in 94 innings pitched. Her 15-1 record and 1.12 ERA only touched on her effectiveness. Not bad for a player who could barely locate the plate when she started pitching. “When I was in third grade I couldn’t throw the ball to the catcher to save my life. I was lucky if I didn’t throw it over the backstop,” Hedgcock said. “I just worked really hard over the winter in fifth grade and I suddenly was able to throw a strike. I kind of fell in love with pitching then. I could take it or leave it in third grade, but I fell in love with it after I realized how much power I had over the game.” Havelka said Hedgcock is unafraid to throw any pitch in any count, helping keep hitters off balance. The past two seasons she has formed a solid one-two punch with sophomore Payton Buresch. “In the last two years, she’s won 30 games and lost four,” Havelka said. “That along with her hitting, she’s been phenomenal. She’s accounted for more runs than she’s given up as a pitcher.” Hedgcock has been a varsity player since her freshman year, and Havelka sees a new and improved player come out each spring. He said he believes Hedgcock will come back better than ever for her senior season. “I know one thing – she will work at it. She’s not one to rest on her laurels,” the coach said. “She will work at it. She will spend time working on her pitches to have her pitches be better. “I think she will be better her senior year.”

Despite ending, superb season for DGS softball By JASON ROSSI
jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove South’s softball team looked like its usual self for one inning. The Mustangs got their bats going and plated four runs in the third inning against Marist in a supersectional game on June 9, but that wasn’t enough in a 5-4 loss that ended the season. Despite the way things ended, with the Mustangs coming up just short of a state finals berth while the RedHawks went on to win state, it was a solid season for DGS. “It’s been amazing, by far one of the best teams I’ve ever played on,” senior center fielder Zahrya McFarland said. “The girls were amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls. It was incredible, and I wouldn’t change it for the world except for [the ending]. “It was the best season as a whole the three years I’ve been on this team.” Caroline Hedgcock echoed McFarland’s thoughts on the season. “I loved every moment of it. I loved every girl I played with. There wasn’t any bad blood on the team,” Hedgcock said. The Mustangs finished the season with a 36-2 record with their lone regular season loss coming against a solid Downers Grove North team on the eve of the state playoffs. They won the West Suburban Gold title with an 18-0 mark and were an offensive juggernaut all season. The Mustangs averaged nearly 11 runs and 13 hits per game, and had six everyday players – McFarland, Hedgcock, Kristen Bialek, Nicole Bowman, Kristin Lea and Megan LoBianco – finish with averages over .400. Hedgcock, Lea and LoBianco all hit over .500 and are juniors who will form the heart of a team that learned some lessons from the tough supersectional loss this season. “Tough losses, as much as they hurt, they definitely make you better as a player. Things bother you less and you learn to work through those tough parts in a game,” Hedgcock said. “That’s part of softball. There’s going to be

They left their mark on a DGS team that will return nearly intact next season. “These three seniors were very instrumental,” South head coach Ron Havelka said.
“They were leaders in many ways on and off the field and they meant a lot to us.” Ondracek will play at Elmhurst College while McFarland will be continuing her playing career at Northern Kentucky University next season, but she knows part of her legacy will be evident when the Mustangs take the field next season.
“I think the mark I left at DGS that I want to be known for is never giving up and giving 110 percent because whoever gives more wins,” she
said. “You can’t let up, you got to keep trucking. You can’t give up and you have to keep going. That’s the most important thing.”
