Incumbents were the big winners in the April 7 races for village board seats in Woodridge, Lisle and Bolingbrook, according to unofficial election results from the DuPage County Election Commission. However, only 18 votes separated her and Mandel. In Bolingbrook, three incumbents won back their seats on the Village Board, based on preliminary numbers from both DuPage and Will counties. In Will County, Leroy J. Brown led the race with about 30.4 percent of the vote. Fellow incumbents Ricardo “Rick” Morales and Patricia E. By J.Tom Shaw Sponsored Content is a form of marketing that offers a business the opportunity to reach a targeted audience in a new way. While sponsored content can take on many forms, typically the method consists of articles and video created on behalf of a business. The content is labeled as sponsored, and linked from a news or entertainment website back to the business website. The business is featured in the content, and recognized as the sponsor. If done correctly, sponsored content can be very effective in reaching consumers since it is delivered in the same form and function as other content on the website, such as news. This method, commonly referred to as native content, has taken off in the online publishing industry in recent years. The content is displayed in relevant categories, and written in such a way to improve search engine results. So if someone is interested in car maintenance, they might come across an article that interests them in the local newspaper website, or they might conduct a search on Google and

find the article that way. In either case, the viewer is then exposed to the advertiser’s message by reading the article, and viewing the accompanying photo or video. There are some important elements to make sure that your sponsored content is effective as possible. First, make sure your content is created and displayed to improve your search results, or search engine optimization, SEO. Think about what words people use to search for your product or service on Google, and then use those keywords in your content and headlines. Create value with your content by being informative and engaging. Your article is not an advertisement, so don’t turn off your reader by beating them over the head with a sales message. Rather, offer something of value, such as a helpful tip related to your product or service. Finally, make sure your video and article reflect your business’ personality. Are you reflecting a fun, personable image? Keep the copy conversational and light so people aren’t intimidated or turned off by your message.

ORAL PATHOLOGIST Q: What is an oral pathologist? A: An oral pathologist is a dentist who has gone on for further education and training to learn how to diagnose disease and prescribe treatment by studying tissue from the mouth. Oral pathology is one of several areas of specialty that some dentists choose to pursue after they have finished the work for their DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DDM (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. There is no difference between the two degrees. An oral pathologist may also be called an oral maxillofacial pathologist. The oral pathologist goes on for three more years of training in a specialized program. Should your dentist find an abnormality in your mouth, like a sore or a discolored spot of tissue, he or she may choose to remove a piece of the tissue – an act called taking a biopsy – and send it to an oral pathologist for further examination. The oral pathologist will determine whether the sample is cancerous, infectious or benign. The oral pathologist may also be called in to evaluate and treat facial pain syndromes and burning mouth syndrome. Talk with your dentist for more information on the field of oral pathology. And talk with your dentist about the other areas of dental specialty that are available to you should you need them.

Giant Steps has to raise about $15 million for building and equipment costs, with an eye on beginning construction in about two or three years, said Bridget O’Connor, the organization’s president. The expansion project stems from a lack of options for adults with disabilities in Illinois. When adults turn 22, they no longer receive services or funding for services from their school districts, leaving families searching for supports that are difficult to find. In Giant Steps’ case, leaders there realized they were servicing students and their families for about 15 years and then leaving them to fend for themselves, when services are especially lacking for adults on the autism spectrum, O’Connor said. “That’s the reality for

sticks, he said. Families pay $90 per day for the Canopy program. Both Krolak and Roman receive state funding that can be used to pay for the program. While Giant Steps does not receive public money outside of what it gets from school districts to educate the students with autism they are unable to serve, state cuts could impact the organization by affecting its families. “Any cuts to special needs in the state of Illinois are going to affect the families, and anything that affects the families affects us, Slemmons said. In addition to the supports it provides to clients and their families, Giant Steps also reaches out to the community to help train others about how to be more autism-friendly. This month, the organization has several training sessions scheduled, O’Connor said. She said education is more what’s needed this Autism Awareness Month than awareness itself, as many people are aware of autism. Giant Steps’ partnership with Rich Harvest Farms is part of an important message the organization hopes to spread. “The message it sends is these people are important, and they deserve the opportunity to have a good life, O’Connor said.

LISLE – During an Autism Awareness Month marked by a $1 million cut to autism services in Illinois, Giant Steps in Lisle is hard at work, reaching out to the community to educate people about autism and preparing for its annual fundraiser. Giant Steps offers supports for people with autism and their families, from a day school for kindergartners through 21-yearolds to a fairly new program for young adults when they age out of the school system in Illinois. The organization is in the process of expanding its Canopy day program for adults, and at its 19th annual charity auction Saturday in Woodridge, Giant Steps will honor the man who has helped to make that expansion possible, Jerry Rich. Rich is the owner of Rich Harvest Farms, which Canopy participants regularly visit for both vocational and recreational opportunities through the Sugar Grove site’s golf course, restaurant, lodge, stables, horse track, car museum, natural areas and more, said Garrett Slemmons, Giant Steps’ vice president of community relations. The organization began using Rich Harvest Farms about a year ago for the program,
them, she said. Knowing its success with serving people with autism, Giant Steps started by adding its day program for adults, and now with a residential community on the horizon, the organization hopes to fill another hole in the services available to this growing population, she said. For Rose Krolak of Woodridge, finding a program for her son, Matthew, 23, was a stressful experience, she said. What made her choose Giant Steps’ Canopy program was its focus on autism. Since he began with the program about two years ago, she’s noticed positive behaviors that have extended to Matthew’s home life, including more independence and calmness, Krolak said. Willowbrook resident Linda Roman’s son, Travis, 22, came to Giant Steps about three years ago. She, too, has seen the benefits of the Canopy program, which has helped Travis with his coping skills and self esteem, she said. The day program meets Monday through Friday. On Fridays, participants cook, which is one of Travis’s favorite activities to do through the program. “We cook, like pizza and mashed potatoes and bread-

Voters re-elect Kupka, Davenport to D-99 board Board members list superintendent search, fiscal responsibility as priorities By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com
DOWNERS GROVE – Community High School District 99’s search for a new superintendent will be a central focus for the three winners of the April 7 election for Board of Education. Incumbents Nancy Kupka and Michael Davenport were re-elected to the board. They will be joined by Donald Renner, who narrowly beat incumbent Keith Matune for the final spot. Davenport said he thinks his experience on the board will help him moving forward because he will know what qualities to look for in a superintendent. “The whole culture in our schools, the fiscal responsibility, the things that we do … that only happens with excellent leadership at the top,” he said.
Kupka agreed the superintendent search will be a big factor for the board. In addition, she said there will be financial issues the board will face, including paying for new Chromebooks schools will get beginning next year. Kupka, who serves as the board’s president, had the most votes with 9,625 – 30.2 percent, according to preliminary numbers from the DuPage County Election Commission. Davenport had 8,817 votes, or 27.7 percent. Renner had 6,788 votes – 21.3 percent – and Matune got 6,638 votes – 20.8 percent. “I’m obviously very happy and honored and appreciative to all the people who voted for me,” Kupka said. Kupka added that the other winners will be positive forces on the board. Davenport also was grateful to the community for re-electing him. “I’m glad that the community thinks I’m doing a good enough job that they want me to continue to represent them,” he said. Renner said this is the first election

he’s ever been involved with. “I really didn’t know what to expect last night,” he said the morning after the election. Renner was in a tight race with Matune for the last spot on the board, and he said election night was “nerve-wracking” and “mentally exhausting.” Davenport said the district will face “very tough times” financially. It also had to add some teachers to handle federal mandates. “Going forward, we’re not going to be able to do that, and we’re going to have tough decisions coming up,” he said. Renner said he’s going to continue attending school board meetings as a district resident until he formally joins the body and make sure he is up to speed on all the issues facing the district. He said the hiring of a new superintendent and the upcoming collective bargaining agreement will be the two biggest issues he will face as a board member. Matune declined to comment.

A former College of DuPage radio engineer accused of stealing more than $200,000 from the school’s radio station, WDCB, pleaded not guilty to a dozen charges Monday, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah. John Valenta, 65, of the 1700 block of Lucky Debonair Court,
Wheaton, faces three charges of theft in excess of $100,000 – a Class X felony – and nine further counts of forgery, Darrah John Valenta said. An internal audit conducted at the station, where Valenta was a 30-year employee, allegedly uncovered an “abnormally large number
of costly invoices for radio station engineering services” from Broadcast Technologies, a company Valenta owned, according to a previous news release from the state’s attorney’s office. An investigation revealed that from June 2006 to December 2013, Valenta allegedly submitted Broadcast Technologies invoices to the college for merchandise and labor for work purported to be
done at WDCB. The investigation also indicated that the labor and merchandise listed on the invoices, totaling $200,829.77, was never delivered to the station. Valenta was originally charged Feb. 19 and posted bond on his $400,000 bail the next day, Darrah said. “The allegations in this case clearly illustrate the concept of simple greed,” said State’s Attorney Robert Ber-
lin in a statement at the time. “The defendant had a good job for more than two decades before he allegedly decided to illegally supplement his income at the expense of the College of DuPage.” Valenta’s attorney, Brad Telander, did not respond to a request for comment. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 1 before Judge Liam Brennan, Darrah said.
services. Respite, in the basic of all definitions, means relief for primary caregivers of children and adults with significant developmental disabilities. Primary caregivers are stressed, they are exhausted, they leave their employment because they have no one to care for the loved one with a disability, and, as a result, they may experi-
ence financial instability. Respite keeps people with disabilities and their families safe, together and in a state of well-being. Respite is not a luxury; it is absolutely an “essential” service. Ask any parent of a child with a disability. Let’s all be reminded that “essential” is defined as “absolutely necessary and/or extremely important.”
Respite is a cost-effective alternative to residential placements, hospitalizations and intervention of the legal system. When our state has the fifth highest number of aging caregivers of people with disabilities, it is short-sighted to even believe that we should try to do without this essential service. Gov. Rauner has stated over and over that he
wants Illinois to be competitive and compassionate. He also has stated that he wants to protect the most vulnerable residents in Illinois. Governor, please keep your word.
LETTERS A compassionate Illinois? To the Editor: Gov. Rauner has proposed a budget beginning July 1 that totally eliminates respite services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. According to the Rauner administration, respite services are not considered to be “essential”

A sign is displayed Thursday at Orchard Hill Park in Woodridge in remembrance of Downers Grove South senior Kailee Miller, who died March 30.
The death of Kailee Miller is one that the Downers Grove South High School community will undoubtedly be feeling for a long time. It was clear that those who spoke to Suburban Life about her passing were stunned that the 18-year-old senior was gone – and it was clear that she will be deeply missed. Our condolences go out to her family, friends and classmates. If you’re enjoying one of the parks in Woodridge this spring and summer, you can thank the Community Clean Up the Parks Day volunteers for their part in keeping them trash free. The recent event, put on by the Woodridge Park District, shows how the community can come together to do something great.

SOUND OFF
There’s no need to fear wildlife
Chipmunks and foxes are harmless unless you attack them. They are more afraid of you then you are of them. Wildlife is all around us, and those of us who live in the country enjoy seeing them. We had a fox who lived under our shed one spring and had four little ones. They were a joy to watch and never harmed anyone. That’s more than I can say for some people’s dogs.
Parents must make tough choices
Kindergarten is crucial
In today’s extremely competitive scholastic environment, Kindergarten plays a critical role in a child’s academic development. Adding a few hours a day seems more than appropriate.

Even if they are not choices you would personally make, the world would be a better place if we all tried to support our neighbors instead of sitting in judgment of them.
No crime required
This is an answer to “T-shirt to stop harassment.” Sometimes you don’t have to have committed a crime to be harassed. I can vouch for that. By the time these kids are in kindergarten, school life begins and play time at home slowly comes to an end, it is something you have to face as a parent. … I wish inflation didn’t overtake salary raises as bad as they have since the first recession, but it is what it is. So I will keep leading by example in my household of working my butt off while my wife works part time while my kids go to all-day kindergarten (8-2). And God forbid we take advantage of them getting more educated while we survive – working two jobs and keep reaching for that so-called American Dream.

Napolitano said one of the first tasks the slate will address is the need for a requested audit of state money spent at the school, which the college’s board has yet to take action on funding. “I definitely think that we need to work to approve the state audit,” he said. “I think we need to cooperate with all the investigations going on right now.” The election was one of the most controversial in the school’s history, as the board recently has received criticism for approving a $763,000 buyout for Breuder and hiring a $250-perhour public relations firm for communications counsel. Bernstein underscored the vision of the slate at a previous forum. “Our vision is to provide our students with the skills and education to be competitive in a 21st century economy,” he said. “In order to do that, we have to stop the corruption, integrate the faculty and pay a good compensation to attract the best faculty.”

NATURE’S BEST
“Tonight, they gave us a clear mandate to clean up the College of DuPage,” said Mazzochi, Napolitano and Bernstein in a statement distributed election night. “To put an end to the attitude that has persisted there that taxpayers don’t count, and insiders rule. To finally stop the waste, fraud and abuse. To end business as usual and to truly put taxpayers, students and faculty ahead of the insider interests that have dominated this board and this school for too long.” Napolitano said the race was all about the need for reform and emphasized the election of the Clean Slate shows taxpayers are ready for something new. “The voters have spoken,” he said. “They had a choice. Although they had 12 candidates to choose from, they really only had two choices: They had a choice for reform or they had a choice for the status quo. They chose reform with all three positions they elected tonight.”

GLEN ELLYN – The College of DuPage Board of Trustees soon will be looking at a Clean Slate. The trio of candidates that campaigned under the name the Clean Slate and received significant support from Vice Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton swept the April 7 election. Charles D e a n n e M a z z o c h i Bernstein came in the lead with 42,903 votes, according to preliminary reports from the DuPage County Election Commission and the Will and Cook county clerks. Frank Napolitano followed with 34,011 votes. Charles Bernstein was third with 28,352 votes. All candidates will commit to six-year terms on the board. The slate won all three seats in DuPage and Will counties and two out of
three in Cook County, with incumbents Nancy Svoboda and Kim Savage pushing Bernstein into fifth place. Following the trio was former state representative Sandra Pihos Deanne Mazzochi with 26,966 votes. Other candidates included Dan Bailey, Claire Ball, David Carlin, Matt Gambs, Roger Kempa and Joseph Wozniak. After a long and tuFrank multuous campaign that saw candidates field Napolitano questions on topics including lack of transparency with the current board, public discontentment with college President Robert Breuder and accusations of financial wrongdoing at the school, the incoming trustees believe the taxpayers are more than ready for change.

YARD WASTE COLLECTION HAS RESUMED
WRR
Identity theft is a serious crime. Thieves often look through unsuspecting victims' trash in search of discarded documents containing your name, address or phone number, as well other personal information such as Social Security, bank account or credit card numbers. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years trying to clear their names and restore their credit record.
Mulch, such as woodchips, can be applied any time of year. The size of the area to be mulched should be as large as practical with the mulch not more than 4 inches deep and not up against the tree trunk when mulching around trees.
Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, twigs, small branches and other garden refuse. Collection began April 1 and will continue through the second week of December. For more information visit www.downers.us.
MAIN STREET TRAIN STATION PLATFORM WORK • The Main Street platform reconstruction project is resuming and is scheduled to be completed by July 3. • Demolition is planned to begin on the south (inbound) platform, and then move to the north (outbound) platform as soon as possible. • The sidewalk along the west side of Washington Street, where it crosses the tracks (between Burlington and Warren), will be closed for the duration of the project. Pedestrians are to cross the tracks on the east side of Washington, or at Main Street. • Accessible parking is available at the station. • The western half of both platforms will remain open throughout construction. • Warren Avenue will be one-way westbound from Elm Street to Washington Street. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3. Podcast and live streaming coverage of Council meetings are also available at www.downers.us. Individuals with a disability requiring a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in any meeting should contact the ADA Coordinator at 630.434.5525, prior to the meeting. Wheelchair access is available through the south entrance of Village Hall. 4/15/15

LaCivita’s late-inning blast propels Mustangs By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove South baseball team knows consistent production from the middle of their lineup will greatly increase their chances of another long playoff run. If the Mustangs get more performances from No. 6 hitter Joe LaCivita like his breakout game Monday against York, the team will be in great shape come postseason. The senior outfielder went 2 for 2, including the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth as DGS prevailed 5-4 against the visiting Dukes. “That was an amazing feeling; it felt like I was in the cage and just taking practice swings,” LaCivita said of the home run. “I thought I might get a curve, but then my eyes lit up when he hung a fastball.” The 6-foot-4 senior turned on the 1-1 pitch and belted a home run that traveled over the center field fence, between the 400- and 365-foot markers. “Wow, what can you say about that,” DGS head coach Darren Orel said. “We are not typically a home run-hitting team and Joe’s not necessarily a home run hitter, but it’s great to see him rewarded when he makes a good pass at the ball. He’s a big, strong kid and I keep stressing to him that the home runs and big hits will come if he keeps taking good swings like that.” Starting pitcher Zach Jones did his part, going the distance against York and notching a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to seal the victory, the Mustangs’ sixth in a row. For the game, Jones struck out two and allowed five hits and four earned runs, all of which came in the top of the third inning. The key moment in Monday’s game came after Jones’ four-run third when DGS stepped up to the plate trailing 4-1.

Downers Grove South pitcher Zack Jones delivers a pitch Monday during a game against York at Downers Grove South High School. DGS shortstop Joe Engel led off the bottom of the third with a single before he was caught trying to steal second. The resilient Mustangs then loaded the bases after Corey Vondra reached on an error, Danny Oriente was hit by a pitch and Ryan Taylor drew a walk. Another middle-of-the-order player, No. 5 hitter Zack Radde, smacked a single to center field, plating both Vondra and Oriente. Franklin Gordey, who came in to pinch run for Ryan Taylor, later scored on a wild pitch to tie
the game at 4-4. “That was a huge half inning for us,” Orel said. “How do you respond after you give up that big inning? It’s part of our system, we talk about that, it’s an answer-back philosophy that we stress and we were able to answer back today. So that’s huge.” Jones did his part after the shaky third, mowing down the next nine York batters to clinch the victory. Before Monday’s West Suburban crossover game, the Mustangs recorded a three-

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Caroline Hedgcock recorded a perfect game and blasted two home runs Monday as the Downers Grove South softball team defeated Hinsdale Central 14-0 and improved their unblemished record to 8-0. Hedgcock went 2 for 3 against Central, totaling five RBIs and two runs scored. Both of her home runs came in the fourth inning. On the mound, the University of Maryland recruit struck out seven batters and walked none while recording her momentous feat. She got the final Hinsdale Central batter to ground out to end the game. The Mustangs’ bats came to life in the fourth inning as the girls plated 13 runs. In addition to Hedgcock’s’ two homers, Zahrya McFarland tallied a solo home run and Lindsey Hermann belted a
three-run jack. Megan LoBianco also added an RBI double and Rebekah Ondracek recorded an RBI single. Before Monday’s contest, DGS defeated Bolingbrook 162. Payton Buresch earned the victory, spreading out seven hits and two earned runs over six innings. She struck out four batters. Nicole Bowman led the Mustangs’ offense, going 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Downers Grove South pitcher Caroline Hedgcock opens the scoring for the Mustangs on April 4 with a two-run home run in the third inning against Lincoln Way West.
CICERO – Downers Grove North knows it can always rely on Ellena Metros in crunch time. Metros came through again for the Trojans on Friday. The senior midfielder broke a scoreless tie with 29:34 remaining in the second half to propel her team to a 3-0 victory against a tenacious Riverside Brookfield squad Friday at Carbajal Field. The Trojans won for the third straight game, with Metros scoring in each match. “That first goal was so important,” Downers North coach Bob Calder said. “It took Allie really composing herself and putting it in the back of the net because we had several chances and we just left them all on the field, so breaking that ice allowed us to go from there.” Ironically, all three Downers North goals came into the teeth of a strong wind. The Trojans outshot the Bulldogs by an 11-0 margin with the wind at their backs in the first half but had nothing to show for it as RB goalie Karli Riviera made five of her eight saves. But Metros solved Riviera in the 51st minute when she blasted a left-footed shot under pressure for her fourth goal. “It was a little frustrating but we tried to keep our compo-
sure, and once we settled down we went and attacked,” Metros said. “When we rush as a team we tend to get antsy, so it’s just better to settle down and get composed and stay calm then look up and find the open net.” Metros, a four-year starter, is in charge of keeping the Trojans composed and her example helped the offensive heat up on an otherwise chilly night. Jessica Ridderhoff scored just 40 seconds after Metros off a long feed from Emily Redpath, and Lexi Cittadine added an insurance goal on a breakaway with 7:09 remaining. “Ellie is incredibly important,” Calder said. “She leads by example every single day. She does everything we ask her to do. You saw it [against RB] – she played 80 minutes full speed and really just calmed our team down.” Metros will not play in college, instead focusing on academics at the University of Colorado Boulder, so this season has more meaning to her. “I’m definitely playing my hardest just because this is it,” she said. The win against RB upped North’s record to 4-2 before a 2-1 overtime loss against Loyola in the first round of the PepsiCo Showdown tournament Saturday. The Trojans were set to continue tourney play Tuesday against Oswego East.
