WOODRIDGE – The village of Woodridge is accepting applications for summer public works positions and an engineering internship, according to the village website. The full-time summer seasonal employment will be with the Public Works Department’s maintenance crews. The positions require 40 hours per week with some overtime, and they will last for about three months. The salary is $10 per hour. The engineering intern with the Public Works Department will work 40 hours per week during the summer months, with the potential for additional hours during the school year and winter break. WOODRIDGE – A student loan servicing company will be moving to Woodridge, with plans to create hundreds of jobs by the end of this year, according to a village news release. Chicago-based Enterprise Recovery Systems will move into a 77,000-square-foot building at 840 S. Frontage Road. The business currently has a staff of 500, but it hopes to take on 200 more, the release stated. “We are excited to welcome another great business to Woodridge and look forward to supporting ERS as they grow and make more jobs available within the community,” Mayor Gina Cunningham said in the release. Allstate Insurance previously leased the site, according to the release. Between 2010 and 2013, Woodridge saw a net gain of about 1,600 jobs, the release stated. WOODRIDGE – Early Bird registration is now open for the Woodridge Rotary Club’s 16th annual mini triathlon, and athletes may choose one of five charities to support through their registration fee. Social service organizations selected this year include West Suburban Community Pantry, Family Shelter Service, Metropolitan Family Services, Special Olympics Chicago and Hope’s Front Door. When runners register for the Aug. 16 triathlon, they will select which organization they want to receive $5 of their registration fee. The Rotary Club began this tradition three years ago. In 2014, $4,330 from registration fees was given to the organizations selected. The groups are chosen by Rotary Club members, who nominate local organizations that provide social services and need regular support and

then vote to pick the top five groups that will receive a portion of registration fees. The mini triathlon is a swim/bike/ run event that is the major fundraiser for the Woodridge Rotary Club. The registration fee contributions are only part of what the Rotary Club distributes back to the community during the year following the mini triathlon, according to a club news release. In addition to the groups selected this year, contributions have been made by the club over the past several years to Working Bikes Cooperative, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), Habitat for Humanity, SCARCE Environmental Organization, the Woodridge Park District for program scholarships, Bridge Communities, CASA of DuPage, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer, Serenity House and more, the release stated. A stint cleaning at McDonald’s wasn’t particularly rewarding for the Wheaton resident, and he quit in March 2013. It took more than a year and a half to find his next one, which he did, thanks to the Ray Graham Association. Mueller has cerebral palsy, and even though he no longer needs a walker and has a sharp wit and memory, he has found it hard to find work and other services since he has aged out of most state and federal programs. “I exercised a lot; when it was warm I took some walks,” he said of his post-McDonald’s days. “Most of the time I was completely bored like anyone would be.” Eventually, he found work at A. Hamernik & Associates in Downers Grove, which mainly

The nonprofit was started more than 60 years ago by a group of parents who had children with developmental

The mission was to empower those with disabilities, Nagle said. “Everybody has different needs – some benefit from just coming and spending the day with us and some do best living with us,” she said. “We just try to create the best place for each to grow and achieve.” Currently, the organization works with 150 employers in and around DuPage County and has 232 people currently employed since the employ-

Hamernik & Associates Principal Audra Hamernik said she was immediately interested in the possibility of hiring someone for clerical work through the program, but said the process was just like interviewing any other group employment service with resumes and job coaches. Now, she said, Mueller is an invaluable part of the team, both for his abilities and his

expertise on the challenges of living with special needs. “Joshua shined ... he was very personable; we could tell he was going to be terrific with clients that were actually coming into the office,” she said. “At the time when we hired him, we didn’t realize what he could and couldn’t do, but it became really, really obvious that he could do a lot more than scanning and record keeping.” Now, he serves as a testament of what those with special needs can do in and out of the office, Hamernik said. The office has rarely had to make an accommodation for him, and his skills more than make up for the small changes, she said. Mueller, who celebrated his birthday just before he was hired, said the job was the best present he’d ever gotten. “It’s been a great fit – everything’s going perfectly and I’m able to do a lot and connect with the people that work here,” he said.

“I am not ashamed of my disability,” said South High junior Alex Newell, who was diagnosed with autism when he was just 2 years old. “My mother and father taught me so many things in life, like how to be confident in myself.” Alex is one of 36 students who play on one of District 99’s three Special Olympics basketball teams, which inCOMMUNITY clude a mix of students from VOICE North High, South High and Mark Transition 99, the district’s program for older students McDonald with disabilities. He was addressing the hundreds of people who had gathered in the student cafeteria to celebrate the first-, second- and third-place trophies the teams captured at the state tournament in mid-March. In addition to families, school staff and Board of Education members in the audience, “regular ed” students filled every corner. They had taken the time after school to attend the ceremony and loudly applaud the achievements of their classmates. Alex was a proud champion, happy and encouraging of others with disabilities. After he spoke, people clapped. Many cried. The next day, South High held its annual fundraiser assembly, uniting students in support of one worthy cause. The students voted to support St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The school raised over $62,000 – bringing its total donation to this one charity alone to more than $250,000. Even more impressive, though, was the high level of student and community involvement the event generated. Community members of all ages attended the assembly, cheering those who were cancer survivors and remembering those who were not. The following week, North High came together as a school to support Honor Flight Chicago, a program that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the WWII Memorial. The school has a long and proud history of honoring those who have served our country. The annual Veterans Day event, for example, welcomes scores of local veterans into the school. Students know many of the veterans personally, which helps them understand how meaningful a visit to D.C. is to these older people. These events are just a few of the many examples throughout the school year of how our high schools are creating lasting memories about giving for students, which we hope will have a positive impact on their lives well beyond their high school years. While academic and athletic accolades and awards are wonderful, the real champions in life are those who give back to others.

College of DuPage serves about 28,000 students a semester, making it the second-largest undergraduate institution in Illinois. It has more than 90 certificate and degree programs. It’s a jewel of the western suburbs, extending beyond its namesake county to serve students from Lemont to Naperville, from La Grange to Elmhurst to West Chicago, all from its campus in Glen Ellyn. That litany of good things makes the ongoing torrent of bad news from and about COD leadership all the more outrageous for those of us who live and pay taxes in the school’s district. The recent hiring of a $250-an-hour public relations firm, for instance, fits the textbook definition of irony perfectly. Spending taxpayer money to convince those same taxpayers you didn’t waste their money is so ludicrous on its face that one wonders if the board members piled out of a clown car when they arrived at the meeting where this decision took place. “I think it’s clear that there is need for a PR firm to help the public understand what the true facts are,” board Chairwoman Erin Birt said. It seems that “true facts” about the college are emerging on an almost daily basis, and the public doesn’t seem to be having any trouble understanding them: • Carla Burkhart, a member of the College of DuPage Foundation Board of Directors, has received more than $630,000 in no-bid contracts. Her graphic design firm, Herricane Graphics, was given contracts in 2012 and 2014 for designing signage worth a total

of more than $186,000. Change orders on the contracts have hiked the total payments, according to board documents. • The Chicago Tribune, citing law enforcement and other sources, reported Monday that the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office has issued grand jury subpoenas for records relating to expenses for school administrators at Waterleaf, the restaurant on campus. The Tribune has reported COD President Robert Breuder and other administrators expensed more than $190,000 on food and drinks in the past three years at Waterleaf. • Dan Bailey, a candidate in the upcoming election for COD Board of Trustees, claimed more than $2 million was handed out to College of DuPage Foundation board members without having to submit a competitive bid. Bailey’s allegations prompted Birt to launch a “review” of the practice. This is all on top of alleged fraud at the college’s radio station, Breuder’s sweetheart deal to step down as president with an extra $762,000 in his pocket after an embarrassing email leaked, and the board’s continued dithering on whether to allow an audit of its finances. Students at the school pay $140 per credit hour. That, and taxpayers across the suburbs, in multiple counties, are paying for all of this. Hillary Clinton kept all her emails, personal and government related, on a private server in her home when she was secretary of state. This was in violation of a 2002 federal law that directed all government-related email on government servers. Later, many of her emails were subpoenaed. She alone decided which emails to give up and which to keep. Hundreds of subpoenaed emails were never given up. Recently, it was revealed her private server has been totally erased. If she can get away with the destruction of subpoenaed material, which according to TV personality Judge Andrew Napolitano, is called obstruction of justice, then she shouldn’t be president – she should be queen of the USA. WATER METER READING DEVICE PROJECT The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing the meter transmission units (MTU) that send water meter readings from residential and business customer meters to the Village for water billing. The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove the existing MTUs and install the new ones at each building over the course of 2015. There will not be service or billing disruptions when the units are replaced.

Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, to respond to inquiries from residents and businesses. Customers may also contact the Village with questions.

EARLY VOTING Early voting will continue through Saturday, April 4, 2015, in the Committee Room at the Village Hall, 801 Burlington Avenue. The hours for early voting will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Early voting provides citizens the opportunity to vote before Election Day, at their convenience. If you are a registered voter in DuPage County, we invite you to participate in early voting! Please contact the DuPage County Election Commission at (630) 407-5600 or April Holden, Village Clerk, at 434-5535 for further information about early voting. Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3.

YARD WASTE COLLECTION RESUMES Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, twigs, small branches and other garden refuse. Collection begins April 1 and continues through the second week of December. For more information visit www.downers.us.

DOWNERS GROVE – A seasoned pitching staff plus a wealth of experience could equate to a big year on the diamond for Downers Grove North. With an opening-day lineup featuring 13 seniors and eight juniors, Trojans head coach Chad Isaacson is optimistic his aces and team leaders can carry the load this spring. “Our pitching staff is going to keep us in a lot of games,” Isaacson said. “We will look to compete every day and continually get better. Outlook: First-year Bolingbrook varsity baseball head coach Scott Thyer is optimistic he can turn around a program that won just seven games in 2014. “Our guys have been working extremely hard to prepare for the upcoming season, and I am looking forward to seeing our players compete at a very high level every day,” Thyer said. “Our expectation is to put forth the effort necessary on a daily basis to compete in the South West Suburban Conference, one of the best conferences in the state.” While the Raiders came out of the gate with a sluggish 10-0 defeat against Andrew, Bolingbrook reeled off three straight victories against Oswego, Eisenhower and Hinsdale South. Senior right-hander Matt Jaskowiak went the distance in Monday’s 1-0 win against Hinsdale South, facing the minimum through seven innings, striking out 10 batters and giving up one hit and a walk. Jaskowiak, as well as juniors Jacob Nagel and Maliek Wade and senior south paw Mark Gaskins, will shoulder the pitching load this season. Seniors Lovell Chandler and DeMarco Mong will patrol the Raiders outfield. Lovell provides tremendous speed out of the leadoff spot and Mong has the ability to drive in runs and create run-scoring situations

After a banner year in which the Mustangs recorded 28 victories and won regional and sectional championships, a handful of returning pitchers and positional players appear poised for another run through conference and into the playoffs. Senior Ryan Taylor is one of the most versatile player in the DGS lineup. The three-year starter will pitch and play third base and catcher this season and is an important piece to the Mustangs’ success. The same can be said of senior Joe Engel, another three-year varsity starter who will play shortstop this year and was arguably the team’s most complete defensive and offensive player in 2014. Danny Oriente will provide some pop out of the three hole and will see time behind the plate and in the outfield. Additionally, righty Peter Hamot, who pitched significant innings as a junior, will again be counted on to be a workhorse this spring. Senior Danny Kasher and lefty juniors Ty McCulloch and Zack Jones also will see ample time on the bump. The Mustangs start the season today at a tournament in Memphis, Tenn. Downers Grove South then begins conference play Monday at Addison Trail.
