WESTMONT – Good eats and rockin’ beats will return to the village July 9 to 12 with the Taste of Westmont.

The award-winning summer festival will feature four days of carnival games, band performances and local food, according to Larry McIntyre, communications director for the village.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

Mayor Ron Gunter said the Taste started in 1996 as part of the village’s celebration of its 75th anniversary.

The event was so well-received the village decided to continue with it, Gunter said.

“It really provides an opportunity for our community to come together downtown,” he said.

NEWS BRIEF Police: $15,000 in tablets stolen from AT&T store

WESTMONT – Westmont police are looking for information after several tablets were stolen from a business.

Nearly $15,000 in tablets were stolen between 10:30 p.m. June 28 and 5:30 a.m. June 29 from the AT&T store in the 200 block of West 63rd Street, according to a Westmont Police Department report.

Westmont police Sgt. Stephen Thompson said someone forced entry to the building and stole the tablets. He did not know the exact number of tablets stolen.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Thompson at 630-981-6371.

The food and drink portion of the weekend will include food vendors and a beer tent.

Food will be available from 4 to 10:30 p.m. July 10, noon to 10:30 p.m. July 11 and noon to 8 p.m. July 12.

Food booths will be in the Manning Elementary School parking lot at Cass Avenue and Norfolk Street, with tables and benches throughout the festival.

The main stage for musical performances, at Cass Avenue and Naperville Road, will be active throughout the weekend.

Music starts at 6:30 p.m.

July 10 with the Blooze Brothers, a Blues Brothers tribute band. The other act for the evening will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. when North of Eight performs. North of Eight is a Pink Floyd tribute band whose act will include a light show.

On July 11, Derringer and Rye will play a mix of country and pop music at 4:30 p.m.

Hot Rocks, a Rolling Stones tribute band, will perform at 6:30 p.m. The evening will end with a show by Deacon Blues, a Steely Dan tribute

band that will be joined by Grammy-winning artist Sugar Blue.

From noon to 4 p.m. July 12, the main stage will host a blues jam session in which musicians will be able to come up and play together.

At 6 p.m., there will be a musical tribute to Muddy Waters, who lived in Westmont for 10 years prior to his death, McIntyre said. The performance will feature several blues musicians, including Toronzo Cannon, the Mike Wheeler Band, Omar Coleman, Demetria Taylor and Joe Morganfield, Waters’ youngest son, who is expected to sing.

McIntyre said there will be several members of Waters’ family at the performance, which will include a rededication of Waters into the R&B Hall of Fame into which he was entered earlier this year.

There also will be a youth stage at Cass Avenue and Irving Street featuring the Best of the Burbs Battle of the Bands contest.

Report: Breuder spent more than $100,000 in foundation money “The days depicted in the records you have are over.

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA College of DuPage President Robert Breuder spent more than $102,000 of the College of DuPage Foundation’s money from 2010 to 2014, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Citing statements filed by the Internal Revenue Service, the report stated the embattled president, who is now on paid administrative leave, expensed the money between July 2010 and June 2014 for “leadership cultivation meetings.”

However, records indicate the money also was spent on bar tabs, a rifle for a foundation officer, a limousine ride and more for trustees, senior managers, foundation board members and college vendors, according to the report.

Included in the total is $57,597 spent at the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, a private club for hunting, fishing and land management in Dundee Township, the report

College of DuPage former trustee “The Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee has reported all donations and expenses,” he said. “The Clean Slate Committee has corrected technical nonconformities and is fully compliant.”

In the case of a Campaign Disclosure Act violation, before determining a possible fine, the Illinois State Board of Elections website states the following items are considered: • Whether a committee attempted to disclose the contribution and any attempts made to correct the violation • Whether the violation is attributed to a clerical or computer error • The amount of the contribution • Whether the violation arose from a discrepancy between the date a contribution was reported transferred and the date it was received by a committee • The number of days a contribution report was late • Past violations Recently, an internal school audit was released that stated Hamilton violated college board policy by endorsing the Clean Slate during the election.

“It shows politics gripped COD leadership prior to the April election, and COD leadership spent tax dollars to hold onto its power,” she said of the audit in a statement.

Hamilton said leadership overlooked Savage’s involvement in the election, and that Savage and former trustee Nancy Svoboda campaigned together as a slate. Questions also were raised by watchdog group Edgar County Watchdogs about an email sent by Savage that was made public in which she asked for help from the school’s attorney with answering questions for an article about the election.

“Considering the intense scrutiny the college was under during the same time I was in the middle of an election campaign, I had legal and fiduciary responsibility to avoid compromising the college’s legal position in any statements I made as both a candidate and a sitting board member,” Savage said in the statement.

A former College of DuPage trustee has filed a complaint alleging the committee for a slate of former Board of Trustees candidates failed to report a sizable loan during the process of the April election.

Kim Savage, who was soundly defeated in her bid for re-election this year, filed the formal Kim Savage complaint with the Illinois State Board of Elections, alleging a $20,000 loan from current college Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton to the Clean Slate for College of DuPage Committee was not reported in a timely manner.

The committee supported then-candidates Charles Bernstein, Deanne Mazzochi and Frank Napolitano.

Savage alleges in the complaint the loan was received April 27, but not reported to the state until May 17 – long after the five business days required

by Illinois’ Campaign Disclosure Act. In a statement, Savage acknowledged small campaigns often have difficulty following the act.

“The Clean Slate ran on a very vocal platform of total transparency and to end all alleged violations of policy, yet their own campaign clearly failed to follow one of the simplest requirements of the Campaign Disclosure Act,” she said.

The trio’s platform was announced after months of controversy at the college, including a $763,000 buyout for President Robert Breuder, trustees expensing questionable items at the on-campus Waterleaf Restaurant, theft and forgery charges being brought against a school employee and more.

In a high-profile election, the three swept the race, with several thousand dollars in donations and in-kind services from Hamilton, her husband and her campaign fund, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Some say the Fourth of July marks the beginning of the end of summer. At the Westmont Park District, we believe there is much more fun to be had!

The College of DuPage Board of Trustees is debating the future of the Waterleaf Restaurant on campus.

College wise to consider big changes at Waterleaf Were you pleased to hear that your tax dollars and students’ tuition payments were used to fund more than $530,000 in annual losses for Waterleaf Restaurant?

Probably not.

The fancy, and frankly, quite nice restaurant at the College of DuPage has been a massive money loser since it opened in 2011. It’s virtually certain that any privately owned restaurant that saw those kinds of losses would’ve long since ceased operations.

And lest you find yourself thinking that these losses are strictly a result of the restaurant’s use as an educational facility, that’s not the case, either. Students only staff the restaurant on Mondays and Tuesdays; the rest of the time, it’s run as a professional restaurant.

The school’s trustees are considering three options to stem the tide of red ink:

convert the restaurant to classrooms, open it to leasing and events, or repurpose it as an academic lab.

Nice as the restaurant is, all of those options sound preferable to the status quo.

With all the fine dining options that abound in the College of DuPage’s district, it’s hard to believe that anyone ever thought that Waterleaf could’ve been anything but a financial boondoggle.

If there’s a way to let students continue to train in a restaurant-style environment while cutting the losses way back, it’s pretty obvious that would be a desirable outcome.

And it sounds like several trustees are thinking along those lines.

We’d like to see Waterleaf continue in some fashion, with some mix of student and faculty running things, but as a professionally run restaurant, this is a business model that clearly has failed.

I’m responding to the caller titled “Teachers’ compensation has an impact on pension crisis.” ... I think the thing that’s most important here to say is that if you would like to become a teacher and benefit from those benefits that you say that we receive, then you’re more than welcome to do that. ... I worked in corporate America for over, oh, about 25 years, before I became a teacher. I have a bachelor’s degree, I have a master’s degree and I have continuing education, and my salary compensates me for the type of education that I have in the educational industry. I also don’t get bonuses that people get in corporate America, and I also don’t get a golden parachute if I was to leave an organization in corporate America. Every job has their own benefits and perks.

Tenure for teachers? Haven’t you heard?

Tenure means nothing anymore. We are evaluated as teachers and have to do a good job or we are watched and monitored, which is a very good thing to do, and I agree with that part. Pension? We put money into our pension. What’s sad is the state keeps so-called borrowing our money, but never puts back what they borrowed. So please, get your facts

Does the U.S. Supreme Court have the exclusive power to decide which cases to take on appeal or not, and how to do the process? The answer is no. Please see U.S. Constitution, Article 3, Section 2, paragraph two, last sentence. And I quote, “In all the other cases before mentioned, the Supreme Court shall have appellate jurisdiction both as to the law and fact, with such exceptions and under such regulations as the Congress shall make.”

This means that Congress can filter cases that the Supreme Court may or may not decide and set regulations for the appellate process. Congress has the power to focus and regulate the Supreme Court. It looks like Congress is too timid to focus and regulate the [Supreme Court], even though it has the constitutional authority to do so.

The Sound Off comments regarding teachers in recent weeks have been frustrating to read. In the July 1 edition, the average teacher salary circa 2012 was declared to be $70,000. Teachers have really taken a hit then, because the current average salary in Illinois is $59,000. ... As usual, small, unhappy minds are complaining when some people have more than they do, even when the people they describe really don’t. Rather than attacking one group, which may or may not have a better salary, doesn’t it make sense to work together to raise everyone’s salaries?

What is the point? Should we be thankful we won’t have to step in or pick up messy piles of dog dirt? Why do dog walkers pick up, then let others dispose of the leavings?

Cyclists should stay close to curb

Courtesy begets courtesy. Illinois’ Vehicle Code 625 ILCS 5/11-1505 states bicyclists should ride as close as practicable and safe to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway. Beyond legal technicalities, obstructing traffic lanes is unsafe and promotes a poor relationship with motorists. Particularly irksome are cycling groups taking the entire lane. Please ride in a way that promotes a safe and courteous relationship with motorists.

jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – There are many differences between the football teams at Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South.

Now there are some similarities.

Though the Mustangs and Trojans sport different colors, run different offenses and are in different playoff classes, both are in the same boat with each having some personnel changes as they get set for the 2015 season.

Both sides of town will have new quarterbacks under center and some new faces in the backfield and on defense, which make summer practices a key time in the effort to lessen the learning curve.

“We don’t have all of our offense or defense in yet,” South head coach Mark Molinari said during the Red Grange Classic 7-on-7 on June 25. “We’re slowly starting to install it all so we’ve got probably around 30 percent of our offense in and 50 percent of our defense.

So it’s really just working on fundamentals and by the end of July our goal is to have it all in.”

The option offense run by North head coach John Wander is relatively easy to learn compared to attacks that place more emphasis on the pass, but considering the Trojans saw three-year starting quarterback David Edwards graduate this spring, this summer is crucial to getting a new signal-caller on track for the season. So far, seniors Brandon Bancoro and Quinn McAnally and junior Nick Taviani have been getting the reps at quarterback. Bancoro was a varsity free safety last season while McAnally was a backup quarterback.

“Quinn has played it and Brandon did it on the lower levels, so it’s just getting them back up to speed with what they already did,” Wander said.

“We run the same stuff throughout the program, so it’s more like, ‘All right, I

Molinari and the Mustangs also are giving three quarterbacks a look during the summer after the graduation of Jordan Skach. Connor Kreifel was a varsity backup QB last season while Riley Heavey was a wide receiver. Those seniors plus junior Joe Tonoff, the sophomore team quarterback last year, all have been sharing time during summer camp.

pretty good athletes, so I would anticipate that whatever ends up happening [when the starter is named], we’ll find something for the other two to do.”

Whoever winds up under center for the Mustangs will have some solid protection in the form of Michigan-bound lineman Erik Swenson. Likewise for North’s quarterback as the Trojans return their 2014 offensive line of center Brennan Harmon, guards Luke Goergen and Liam Ninneman, and tackles Jimmy Artensen and Ryan Martin intact.

“We’ve got a lot of our offensive line back, and that seems to be a good thing,” Wander said. “We’re not overly large, but we’re playing very fast and more physical than last year, so we’re happy there. It’s helping our quarterbacks because the offensive line is sure of what they’re doing and it makes our quarterbacks’ reads easier.”

Though things seem to be setting up nicely for both teams, there still are some holes left to fill.

Now, sectionals will be broken down into two sub-sectionals to avoid loaded regionals such as the Class 3A baseball regional that included powerhouse teams Lemont, Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West, all state title contenders, meeting in the first rounds of the playoffs.

In addition, the so-called success adjustment rule will be implemented for the 2015-16 school year.

Non-boundaried schools with at least two state trophies in the past four years and at least one in the past two years will be moved up one class. In all, 23 teams were moved up.

“I’m thrilled, absolutely thrilled,” Molinari said. “We’ve been asking for it for a long time [as coaches] and I’ll be the first one to say it’s almost perfect.”

Another local team that could be affected by the classification adjustment is Nazareth football. The Roadrunners had the third smallest enrollment, based on their non-boundary school multiplier, in Class 6A this past fall. With Montini and Sacred-Heart Griffin, the finalists each of the past two years in Class 5A, moving up to 6A, Nazareth could be on the bubble to actually move down despite being defending 6A champions. Another possibility is a Nazareth-Montini playoff meeting.

“I go way back with [Montini coach] Chris [Andriano],” Nazareth coach Tim Racki said. “He was the head coach at Montini when I played there. I have great respect for him. We have a great relationship. If we saw him that would be a great challenge.”

The IHSA announced some rule changes that will affect postseason play in team sports, including a new way to seed teams in the football playoffs.

On June 15, the IHSA board of directors approved a change to the structure of the football playoffs which will seed teams in Classes 7A and 8A from 1 to 32. The previous structure featured 16-team and 8-team brackets to limit travel distances.

However, that came under fire because of an unbalanced seeding format and many of the same teams facing each other year after year. For example, last year Class 8A was broken into a 16-team bracket and two brackets of eight teams. The 16-team bracket, which included schools mostly from the north and northwest suburbs as well as West Suburban Conference teams Lyons Township, Glenbard West and Oak Park-River Forest, featured four teams with 8-1 records and three 9-0 teams. Each of the two eight-team brackets had only two 8-1 teams and no undefeated teams.

The new rule should help alleviate the imbalance in the bracket and also provide fresh matchups in the playoffs. Three of the 16 first-round games in the Class 8A bracket were rematches of conference games from the regular season.

“We like to play other teams,” Downers Grove South coach Mark Molinari said. “We were thrilled to play Simeon last year. We didn’t have the result we wanted, but just to play someone else was awesome. If that means we have to travel to Edwardsville or somewhere else, I’m completely fine with it.”

In the other six classes there will be two 16-team brackets, thus eliminating eight-team quadrants. The previous rule, according to the IHSA’s release on the announcement, would “change the bracket to quadrants if certain travel mileage distances were exceeded.”

“I love it,” Downers Grove North coach John Wander said. “They used to say travel was bad; I think that’s what makes it. We’re a unique sport where not everyone makes the playoffs, and if someone told me I had to go to East St. Louis, I’d be happier than heck because that means we’re back in the playoffs this year.”

Other team sports also will have a restructuring in the postseason.

Mustangs’ Swenson looks forward to playing at Michigan

jbartelson@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Erik Swenson always had the dream of playing football at Michigan. When he started to gain notoriety on the field at Downers Grove South, he didn’t waste any time solidifying his college plans as he committed to the Wolverines as a sophomore.

Now heading into his senior season, Swenson spoke with Chicago Football Magazine’s Jake Bartelson about his commitment to Michigan, the potential of his recruiting class and how he hopes to take the field as a freshman.

Bartelson: You committed to Michigan almost a year and a half ago, which is kind of early, so what inspired such the early commitment to Michigan?

Swenson: I’ve always been a huge Michigan fan. I got an offer freshman year, played the whole season, thought about everything, and I realized I could not find a better school than Michigan, so why not commit now? Why go through all the coaches bothering me? I knew where I wanted to go, and I didn’t even bother looking anywhere else because I knew I wanted to go to Michigan.

Bartelson: What about Michigan sold to you?

Swenson: I grew up watching them as a little kid, and the tradition Michigan has always had. It’s an excellent lineman school. I mean, my idol is [2008 No. 1 NFL Draft pick] Jake Long. He’s on my wall, as I have a FatHead of him in my room. They have my major I want to study in sports management … the facilities are top-notch. The Glick [Field House], you walk in, and you just want to play football.

Bartelson: When Jim Harbaugh took over for Brady Hoke, at any point did you think you’d reconsider? Or did coach Harbaugh sit you down? How did that process play out?

Swanson: When Hoke got fired in [early December] and all through December, I was a

little hesitant. I knew we were getting a great coach. ... [The Wolverines] were still solid during the Hoke era, but I felt even more solid with Harbaugh coming here.

Bartelson: Looking at the 2016 Michigan recruiting class, what are your takeaways from the class you’ll be coming in with, and how excited are you?

Swenson: I’ve been talking a lot with a lot of guys outside of Michigan, and we’ll have a few more commits this month.

We’ll definitely be bumped up way higher than the 38 mark. … There’s an awesome class coming in, and Harbaugh is going to do great things with the 2016 class.

defensive ends there [are]. I hope we get the best offensive linemen because it makes me an all-around better player. I like the pressure, and I think it makes you work harder than just being the best guy already there. I think I wanted the best guys to go against to make me a better player.

Bartelson: Do you feel pressure knowing you’re going into the Big Ten and playing in the Big House?

How are you going to deal with that adversity?

Swenson: I mean, everyone feels pressure going into there, and it’s going to be a hard program. Harbaugh makes you work. Personally, I just like to compete. I’ll have no problem if there is a guy better than me there. I know I’ll give my best effort there, and I think I’ll be pretty successful at Michigan.

Bartelson: A part of the coaching staff is offensive coordinator/ line coach Tim Drevno. Have you had conversations with him on his expectations for you and what he wants you to do this coming season to get ready?

Swenson: Yes, Drevno and I have a great relationship already. … We talk on the phone at least every other, if not every week. He tells me what recruits to talk to; I talk to them and give some input back.

Bartelson: Has he said you’re going to play on a specific spot on the

offensive line when you get there?

Swenson: Definitely tackle, for sure. Drevno does not really care about seniority or age. He plays the best players whatsoever. I’m pretty sure he played three freshmen at USC last year.

As for left or right tackle, he hasn’t specified yet. … I may more than likely start freshman year – if not, sophomore year – so I will be starting rather early compared to other recruits coming from other schools.

Bartelson: You have one year of football before you go on to Michigan. What’s the plan to stay in shape and continue to get ready for college?

Swenson: Just work on everything and get every muscle in my body stronger – my ankles, my shoulders, my knees – just to hold up against college guys.
