State of the Village address is today

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Elected officials and members of the local business community will take the stage today for the annual Westmont State of the Village address.

A tradition that dates back more than 15 years, State of the Village check-in is at 11:30 a.m. today at the Hilton Oak Brook Hills Resort. Lunch will be served at noon and will be followed by a slate of six speakers who will begin presentations about 12:40 p.m., wrapping up about 1:30 p.m.

Similar to years past, Mayor Ron Gunter will be the fixture speaker. He will be joined by Westmont Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Larry Forssberg, Village of Westmont Finance Director Spencer Parker, Village Planner Jill Ziegler, Village of Westmont Communications Director Larry McIntyre and acting Village Manager Steve May. The Westmont Chamber of Commerce is again hosting the event, and Forssberg explained that the state of the village remains a viable way to learn about the vision of local leaders.

“It’s important to share the well-being of our community – where we stand and what direction we are heading in,” Forssberg said. “The community, county, state, country and world have come out of an extensive downturn. The unemployment rate is now at 5.9 percent, which is a beautiful thing. So it’s important for our residents, business owners and everyone to have an idea of what is going on.”

While Forssberg would not tip his cap and reveal many of the details that will be discussed during the state of the village, he said Westmont’s budding business community

District 201 to host referendum meetings SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – Community Unit School District 201 will hold four more informational meetings to help residents understand the district’s referendum question on the Nov. 4 election ballot.

Meetings will be held Oct. 16 at Miller Elementary School, Oct. 22 at South School, Oct. 27 at Westmont Junior High School and Oct. 30 at Westmont High School.

The district held its first information session Oct. 1 at Manning Elementary School.

The district also allocated time to discuss the referendum during PTO meetings Oct. 20 at Westmont Junior High School and Oct. 21 at Miller Elementary School.

The school board recently voted to place on the November ballot a referendum question asking the voters for the right to issue up to $26 million worth of bonds to improve the

district’s schools and address safety and access concerns.

Unlike a similar ballot referendum that was defeated by a margin of nearly 4 to 1, this question will ask voters whether or not the projects should be funded using bonds, rather than increasing the debt service extension base.

The referendum question needs a majority approval in order to pass.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Midwestern University health fair welcomed visitors Saturday with a variety of screenings and free flu shots, as well as expanded offerings and interactive activities all meant to bring health education to the public.

The student-led health fair moved this year to the Downers Grove Park District’s Recreational Center to accommodate the longer list of booths and activities.

Event coordinator and second-year pharmacy student Jan Kum said one of the new categories this year to the fair is the Children’s Health section.

“We are so excited about this section,” Kum said.

“We have a approximately 10 booths in the children’s health section and dedicated one-third of the gym for this section. In class you learn about children’s pediatrics and its a great way to showcase what we learned in the classroom.”

About 220 student volunteers participated in the multi-disciplinary event, Kum said.

Some of the booths for parents and their children to visit included car seat safety check, pediatric dental outreach, poison prevention and a teddy bear clinic, complete with provided teddy bears to children to teach kids what goes on in a doctor’s office, according to Kum. WESTMONT – Ale Harvest Fest organizers will donate a portion of the proceeds raised during the inaugural craft beer event to the Westmont Chamber of Commerce Educational Foundation.

“When we first started talking about having this event in Westmont, our main thought was to figure out how the community could benefit from it,” Westmont First Committee volunteer Jim Wright said in a news release.

“Westmont First was able to coordinate a relationship between the event hosts and the Westmont Chamber of Commerce, so that now their Education Foundation will be able to offer more scholarships to area students over the upcoming year. In addition, we have an excellent new event coming to our community,” he said.

The inaugural Ale Harvest Fest will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Ty Warner Park, near the corner of Plaza and Blackhawk drives. There will be more than 40 craft breweries and more than 80 craft beers from throughout the country represented at the event.

The Ale Harvest Fest is a joint production between Lou Dog Events and Beer Dogging.

Attendees will be able to sample home brews from beer aficionados across Illinois and vote for their favorite.

Additionally, the final competition of the Illinois Professional-Amateur Homebrew Championship will take place at the fest as well.

Patrons also are encouraged to bring canned goods to the event to be collected by The People’s Resource Center.

LONGTIME DOWNERS GROVE RESIDENTS, ROBERT (BOB) AND MARY ANN (STICH) LANG CELEBRATE THEIR 60th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Bob and MaryAnn are high school sweethearts, graduating from Downers Grove North High School, in 1953. They were married October 9th, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Parish in Downers Grove. They first lived on Maple Ave., and continue to reside in town.

After graduation in 1953, Bob purchased a gas and service station which was later named “Lang’s Auto Service”. Over 60 years later, the service station is a prominent local business, operated by the current owners under the same banner. Bob later went on to become an Assistant Fire Chief, with the Downers Grove Fire Department. He continues to enjoy his love of hunting, fishing and boating.

MaryAnn left the CB&Q Railroad after the wedding to become the Chief Operations Officer of the Lang Family. Her career has been maintaining the Lang home office and co-ordinating the family operation. She has been active in her High School Women’s Club, and a 48 year member of the Homemakers East Bowling League. She continues her love of family, reading and bowling.

Bob and MaryAnn raised four daughters, Terry (David Kemp), Peggy (Mark Chamberlain), Barb (George Drobney) and Robin. They have seven grandchildren, Danielle (Chase Ziegler), Robert S. Lang, Joe Drobney (Amber), Shannon Drobney, Sean Drobney, Kate Chamberlain, and Emily Chamberlain.

The Lang’s’ spend their time between their home in Downers Grove, and cabin in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

Making a new home for People’s Resource Center Southeast Almost six years ago, People’s Resource Center opened its doors in Westmont to better serve an increasing number of neighbors in need who reside in the southeast part of DuPage County. People’s Resource Center had already been serving DuPage County’s low-income residents for nearly four decades from our headquarters in Wheaton. Expanding to COMMUNITY Westmont allowed us to VOICE better serve that community Kim as well as Downers Grove, Woodridge, Willowbrook, Perez Darien, Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale and other nearby communities.

Our 2008 expansion was timely, because within a few months of opening the doors, the Great Recession hit, and the number of families served at the Westmont location skyrocketed – tripling from 300 per month to over 900 per month in just five short years. Countywide, we’re now helping 3,600 families each and every month who can’t afford to pay for groceries, clothing, housing, or to pursue the educational opportunities that could help them get back on their feet.

It is a tragedy so many of our neighbors are struggling.

Thank goodness that so many others have stepped up to volunteer and donate generously to respond to this growing need.

Nearly 2,000 people volunteered with us last year, and we’ve still never had to turn a family away from our food pantry because the shelves were bare.

The time has come for People’s Resource Center to expand yet again. Later this month, we will purchase a larger building in Westmont. Generous community supporters have already pledged more than $1.4 million to support this project – more than half of the project costs. After completing renovations, we will move our Westmont operations from our current location on Blackhawk Drive to our new location just a few blocks away.

I look forward to inviting you to celebrate this new building with us! I also will be asking you to make a lasting investment in the future of our DuPage communities by helping us raise the remaining funds we’ll need to renovate the building. Thumbs up to Westmont resident Nichole Yunger for starting Saturn Soap Co. out of her basement this spring and debuting her products at local farmers and crafts markets this summer.

Yunger has a variety of scents, ranging from laundry, to lavender-chamomile, patchouli and sandalwood and pumpkin spiced latte, all of which are made from natural ingredients. Yunger said she hopes to expand into the candle making business within the year, and we can’t wait to see what interested products you come up with.

Keep the dogs out

Would someone please tell me why dog owners think it’s permissible to bring their animals to public events?

First, not everyone likes dogs…

I don’t want to be sniffed, nudged, nipped or barked at; I don’t care how cute your dog is. I find it very distracting, especially when I’m attending a children’s game, and we are supposed to be there to watch the kids play, not admire your dog. Granted, most dogs are well-behaved, but there is always the barker or one that wants to play, so charges every dog in sight. I believe there is an ordinance against taking your dogs into parks and park district fields. Parents, aren’t we setting a poor example by ignoring these rules in front of our children? Most important is safety. Yes, I know your dog would never bite anyone, but how many times have we heard that before? They are animals and as such, can be set off by heat, noise, fear, another dog or whatever, and you never know when it could happen.

As a Westmont resident and as an employee of a downtown business, I am continually frustrated with the parking policy downtown.

Years ago, I was told I needed to start paying the town $100 to park within two blocks of my job.

I begrudgingly obliged after a year of constantly moving my car.

Now this past week, our designated spots were being resurfaced without any notification – no problem.

We parked in the lot that was – and most of the time, is – never full. An officer who seems to patrol only that lot chalked our cars. She rectified the problem for the day; we were told to park two blocks from our business. I find this absurd that members of the business community are being asked to pay for spots that are blocks away from their place of business. I hear continuous complaints from elderly customers about the lack of parking on Burlington Avenue. Some of these people have a hard time walking far distances or even walking at all!

Yet, I have witnessed several cars out there all day long. How come these spots are not being ticketed? Something needs to be done. I want everyone to be able to enjoy beautiful downtown Westmont, not just those who can walk a short distance. Perhaps more time should be spent providing spots closer to our business available to all, instead of chalking cars and monitoring paid business member parking.

Born February 20, 1924, in Chicago, Ted was a son of the late John and Josephine (Noga) Szal. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Euopean, African and Middle Eastern Theaters, earning three bronze battle stars.

Ted retired from Poole Brothers Printing, who printed the Chicago Sun Times, Naperville Sun and Downers Grove Reporter newspapers.

He was a member of the Wilmington, Lisle and Berwyn VFW Posts, and was an avid golfer and bowler.

Ted will be remembered as a dedicated and supportive father who loved his family and took pleasure in driving and taking family trips.

Survivors include three daughters, Judith (Robert) Morrison of Northville, New York and Gayle (Roger) Braffett and Marcia (Gary) Carlson, both of Sycamore, Illinois; one son, Ted J. (Debbie) Szal of Gresham, Oregon; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; and two brothers, Anthony and Edward Szal.

Graveside services were held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, on Thursday, October 2, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. Full military honors will be rendered by the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad and the United States Army. SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The first patient diagnosed with the Ebola virus in the United States is in isolation in Dallas, but there is little worry for the infection to become an epidemic, doctors say.

“The public health systems we have in place make it very unlikely that it will spread like it did in West Africa,” said Dr. Brian Harting, infectious

disease specialist at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The disease is not airborne and is spread by direct contact with bodily fluids, which limits its mobility. In addition, infected persons are not contagious until showing symptoms, unlike some other viruses.

“That’s why we have a little bit better success [at locating] people who have potential risk,” he said. “There was

a case in Nigeria, in a pretty large city and there was a lot of alarm that it could spread throughout the tens of millions of people. But because they have more sophisticated public health responses [than in other West African countries] they were able to isolate the patient and identify who that patients’ contacts were and contain that outbreak so far.”

On Wednesday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced the man

in Dallas had come into contact with four school-age children who were now being monitored and have not shown symptoms, according to media reports.

In total, between 12 and 18 people have been identified as having come in contact with the patient, according to media reports.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the patient had been diagnosed with Ebola after return-

ing from a trip to West Africa.

“The patient did not have symptoms when leaving West Africa, but developed symptoms approximately four days after arriving in the U.S. on Sept. 20,” the CDC wrote. “The person fell ill on Sept. 24 and sought medical care at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas on Sept. 26. After developing symptoms consistent with Ebola, he was admitted to hospital on Sept. 28.”

The creation of Top Note Tonic has been a 20 year journey for the 1987 North High graduate. Pellettieri, 45, received a bachelor of science in botany from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a masters of science in occupational/environmental health from the University of Illinois Chicago.

Pursuing her love of food and beverage, she landed in the craft brew industry where she utilized her skill set as a quality manager for Goose Island Beer Company and MillerCoors, she said.

After a lengthy career, she left the craft beer industry and decided to branch out as a beverage entrepreneur. Currently living in Milwaukee, Pellettieri co-founded La Pavia Beverage Company with husband Noah Swanson and Top Note Tonic was born early in 2014.

“We are looking for places with cocktail customers that are interested in what ingredients are going into menu,” she said. “This is a branded soft drink component that is a little different because it is low sugar and handmade.”

Milwaukee-based Hudson Business Lounge and Cafe has been carrying Top Note Tonic products for about five months, according to cafe manager and cook Jenny Hochschild.

“I loved the products immediately, and I thought I could sell them,” Hochschild said.

“There are no chemicals and no nastiness in the tonics, just good flavor.”

Hochschild said she uses the bitter orange, bitter lemon and gentian flavors at the restaurant.

“A lot of people like added flavor to their drinks,” Hochschild said. “They like the novelty of it.”

Whether or not a person drinks alcohol, the tonics offer individuals a chance to enjoy a beverage that tastes great, and an opportunity to appreciate real fruit flavor in a drink and not artificial flavorings, Hochschild said.

“I think her attitude in life comes out in her products,” Hochschild said of Pellettieri.

“She is delightful and her products are the same way.”

By selling the tonics “on-premise”, an industry term meaning the beverages are sold to restaurant and bars for consumption, Pellettieri is hoping the tonics will follow the same pattern of the craft beer industry.

“Craft beer started on-premise to get customers to try it and to prove that customers would come back to them,” Pellettieri said. “Our goal is to expand to a ready-to-drink line on soft drinks and be on the shelf with other tonic waters and not just be a mixer.

“We want to be looked at as a soft drink and expand what people think about tonics.

They use to be a drink that is low sugar that is slightly good for you and we want to bring that back.”

A: A gumboil is a pus-filled, painful swelling on the gum that is usually a result of an abscess – an infection – brought on by tooth decay. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS.

(a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

Bella Bacino’s fires up passion for Italian LA GRANGE – As we approached Bella Bacino’s in downtown La Grange, diners sat outside enjoying their Italian fare on a mild fall evening.

Indoors, the inviting space has warm colors and a wall covered with sections of wine crates. The old world Italian inspiration can’t be missed, but the decor remains unique, bathed in deep reds with pale accents. Strings of miniature light bulbs wrap the exposed ceiling overhead for a romantic touch.

After delivering our drinks, our server brought over a warm plate of tomato basil bread, along with olive oil and Parmesan cheese.

Not only did the orange-hued bread look more adventurous than a traditional basket of baguette slices, the basil added an extra kick.

Despite the tempting list of appetizers, including classics such as bruschetta and calamari, the Caprese salad was calling my name. I decided to skip the opening act and talked my dining companion into splitting the Caprese’s fresh cow’s milk mozzarella, slices of locally grown, vine-ripened tomatoes and basil, topped with extra virgin olive oil and a balsamic reduction. The juicy tomatoes and creamy mozzarella popped with contrasting flavor and texture.

After studying the menu, my companion decided on one of the day’s specials. He picked the potato gnocchi with prosciutto and spring peas in a light cream sauce. I had to sneak a bite from his plate after listening to him rave about his dinner choice.

The delicate sauce was just the right amount to dress the hearty potato dumplings and tangy prosciutto tidbits.

I went with the flavorful Rigatoni con Mozzarella.

My plate was filled with house-made tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil, and Parmigiano-Reggiano. I added prosciutto, but another option is salsiccia, an Italian sausage.

SENECA – Kyle Domin scored the winning touchdown for Westmont’s football team Friday, but the junior quarterback said it was the defense that deserves the praise.

“It was good to pull out a win, and the defense stepped up,” Domin said. “We scored with about two minutes left, and we trusted the defense to stop them.”

Domin’s 19-yard touchdown run answered Seneca’s score with 4:04 to play, and his score coupled with tough late defense helped lead the Sentinels’ to a 27-22 win against Interstate Eight Small foe Seneca.

Westmont (3-3 overall, 2-2 I-8 Small) had decisive wins earlier this season against Chicago Christian (56-34) and Lisle (62-42), but Friday was the first time the Sentinels won a close one. Not only that, but they overcame a late deficit to do so.

“We were down 14-0 early, but we knew we’d be able to get them,” Westmont head coach Otto Zeman said. “We were up 19-14, got stopped on the 1-yard line and then they had a 99yard drive, nine-minute drive, but we knew we’d be able to come back.”

Zeman credited a strong defensive effort, particularly those of Adam Ferrell and Anthony Arias, with helping propel the Sentinels to the win.

The 22 points the Irish scored was the fewest Westmont has allowed all season.

On the other side of the ball, a solid running game helped the Sentinels keep the chains moving.

“Definitely our running game was strong. I think me and Quintin [Brown] combined for over 300 yards” said Domin, who said Sam Soltwisch’s return from injury helped the Sentinels control the line of scrimmage.

Sentinels return home to host a Reed-Custer team that just won its first game of the season against Lisle. Despite the Comets’ record and offensive woes (87 points scored in six games), Zeman and the Sentinels aren’t taking them lightly, especially as they look to take one more step toward a playoff berth.

Baker breaks out as DGS tops DGN

By JASON ROSSI jrossi@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Last year, Jacob Baker was playing on the defensive side of the ball when Downers Grove North defeated Downers Grove South 42-21.

On Friday, the South senior helped the visiting Mustangs earn some payback by rushing for 207 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-13 victory against North.

“That loss last year was burned in my memory,” said Baker, who also caught a 31-yard touchdown pass. “I remember getting beat on a couple of plays, so I wanted to come out and show if you’re going to beat us on our field, we’re going to beat you, too.”

Jordan Skach’s 10-yard pass to Max Soderlund got the Mustangs on the board late in the first quarter, and Ryan Taylor’s one-handed interception and 51-yard return put the Mustangs ahead 14-0 early in the second. David Edwards plowed in from 1-yard out to draw the Trojans within 14-6 just before halftime.

Baker scored all three of his touchdowns in the second half to help the Mustangs pull away. First was his fingertip catch, then 34- and 45-yard touchdown runs, the latter making it 35-6 with 4:16 to play.

After a 1-2 start to the season, the Mustangs have won three straight games, twice scoring more than 30 points.

The win against North was another sign South is headed in the right direction.

“Once again, we didn’t play that bad a first half,” Wander said. “Second half, we dropped a ball wide open once again. It was the exact same thing that happened against Oak Park when we fumbled on the 10-yard line [with a chance to tie it] and when we were tied 7-7 against LT [at halftime]. We just don’t finish in the second half and it all compounds.”

Downers Grove North’s soccer team was in need of a momentum boost Thursday against Downers Grove South.

Crowley provided it with an absolute rocket of a goal. The defender was 35 yards out and sent a well-struck ball into the upper left corner of the net for the Trojans’ first strike.

Just a few minutes later, he played the corner kick that led to the Trojans’ tying goal.

Crowley, the Sears Appliance & Hardware Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his goal and North’s solid season so far.

Rossi: What was the thought process on your goal?

Crowley: I pretty much saw

that no one was in front of me, we were down 2-0 and I thought it’s better to take it than not take it. Just kick it as

hard as I could and it went in.

Rossi: Did you have your target picked out?

Crowley: No, not really. I

was just trying to kick it as hard as I could and put it in the net.

Rossi: Do you think your goal gave you the momentum to tie the game?

Crowley: Yeah, I really

think it helped us push forward and get some momentum forward instead of just sitting back and trying to play defense.

Rossi: What’s different about this year’s team that has led to more success?

Crowley: I think the team is

a little bit closer this year, and we have a new coach and he’s got a new idea of where he wants the team to go.

What exactly are those 50 to 75 people going to do for the tourist industry in the city of Chicago? Yes, that is clearly a rhetorical question.

True, the commissioner, who I assume still will be Roger Goodell, will be there.

But 10 minutes ago most of you wanted him fired. Now you want to run out and watch him in person as he steps to a podium every 10 minutes, calls some kid’s name and then exchanges a truly embarrassing man-hug with a young man half his age and twice his size who he’s never met before and probably will never see or talk to again?

That’s entertainment?

But as long as I’m trying to tell you the truth here, I’ve got some bad news for our mayor.

ed in Chicago,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement about the draft announcement.

Nobody’s coming boss.

The NFL draft won’t even be a pimple on the behind of Chicago’s tourist industry.

Each team will send a couple people, so that’s 65 to 100, and the NFL will probably send 50 to 100 more. And they’ll try and bring in the top 20 to 25 prospects and their families and posses. So maybe the event will bring 300 or 400 people to town for a couple days.

You’d get a lot more than that for a quilting convention.

I hate to rain on Chicago’s newest parade, folks, but attending an NFL College Draft in person is much ado about nothing.

Unless, of course, you’re one of those guys who loves to paint his face, throw on a Halloween costume and then go out in public, sit in a peanut gallery and howl at the moon.

Even if you are “that guy,” would you spend a couple grand to travel to another city, book a hotel room and run around a strange city, all decked out like a

doofus and feed someone else’s local economy?

Or are you more likely to participate if all you have to do is take a ride locally and still get home in time for all your meals?

The couple thousand fans who show up in New York every year are all locals who rarely have the opportunity to get to an actual game, so they show up at the draft to proclaim their loyalties.

Maybe we’ll get a few folks who’ll come down for the weekend from Milwaukee or Detroit or head northwest from Indianapolis.

The folks in the seats will be locals who might otherwise be feeding the economy in their neighborhood watering holes.

Again, it will generate a nice amount of free TV time for the city, although nowhere near as much as if the Bears actually made a deep run in the playoffs.

Don’t get me wrong; Bringing the draft to Chicago isn’t a bad thing. It just isn’t much of a thing at all since all we’re really doing is giving folks a chance to miss the best made-for-TV event in all of sports to go watch it in person.

I have been covering the NFL College Draft since 1979, and for the first decade or so would trek to New York every year to be where the action was. Until I finally realized there’s actually no action there at all.

Nobody who matters attends the draft in person.

All of the guys you’d love to talk to, interview or get to spend a few minutes with – NFL general managers, personnel directors, scouts and coaches – are holed up in the “war rooms” at their respective facilities.

The guys and gals they send to the draft to represent them usually are folks somebody owes a favor, perk and/or a fun trip to.

BUDGET MEETING The Village Council of the Village of Downers Grove will conduct a public meeting to review the FY 2015 Proposed Annual Budget on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. at Fire Station 2, 5420 Main Street.

The public is invited to attend.

OPEN BURNING Recreational campfires are allowed in Downers Grove. However, there are safety rules that must be adhered to: • • • • •

Cannot emit offensive smoke or odors Must be attended to by a person 18 years of age or older Must be at least 15 feet from any structure or dense brush Must be conducted in an approved container Cannot burn cardboard, leaves, construction materials, or refuse

YARD WASTE/LEAF COLLECTION Yard waste includes leaves, grass clippings, twigs, small branches and other garden refuse. Collection begins April 1 and continues through the second week of December.

Yard waste must be placed in one of the following: • 33-gallon biodegradable paper bag • 33-gallon unlined can • Republic yard waste cart. (Call Republic at 630-964-3232 for pricing. A garbage sticker is not required.)

Carts or cans must be clearly identified as yard waste. Please mark any yard waste containers on the outside as YARD WASTE, or contact the Village for a decal.

Contact the Downers Grove Police Department at (630) 434-5600 if you notice possible open burning violations.

Brush and tree branches may not exceed 4 feet in length and 5 inches in diameter and must be bundled together with jute twine or uncoated string. Bundles may not exceed 2 feet in diameter, 4 feet in length, and 50 pounds in weight.

A garbage sticker must be attached to each bag, can or bundle.

Bags or cans may not weigh more than 50 pounds.

The open burning ordinance can be found on the Village website www.downers.us.

TIPS TO REDUCE YARD WASTE VOLUME Mow over leaves before bagging them. This reduces the ratio of bags to leaves by seven to one, thereby saving money on sticker costs.

Consider composting. Composting is the biological decomposition of organic material into a humus-like substance called compost.

Leaves and other types of yard waste can be a source of materials used in a compost pile.

STORM GRATES The Village asks for your help, if you are able, in keeping storm grates on your street free and clear of leaves and other debris. This allows water to flow freely into storm drains during rain events.

Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue.

Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m.

Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3.
