Looking forward to the coming months at the Westmont Park District Fitness Club, Polz said she doesn’t anticipate many changes in the offered classes. She said recent additions include more sessions of mat Pilates and yoga morning classes.

“We just added a couple newer classes and threw a couple in the [mix],” Polz said. “You mainly offer classes at your peak hours [and] all of our time slots are fairly full.”

Local schools team with police to host forum on heroin ‘epidemic’ WESTMONT – The Westmont Police Department, Community Unit School District 201 and Maercker School District 60 are teaming up for a presentation on heroin to boost community awareness of the deadly drug.

The drug has become a growing problem in the western suburbs and DuPage County, according to Westmont Police Chief Tom Mulhearn.

“Other communities have had these presentations to try to get this information out. So we’re trying to bring awareness to ... Westmont residents,” he said.

“Heroin – The Suburban Secret” is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the auditorium of Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Drive. The program will discuss heroin in DuPage County along with the drug’s effects on individuals, family and the community. It’s open to anyone, including students.

been seven incidents related to heroin in Westmont in 2013 – six arrests and one that is pending a warrant. There was also an overdose case in unincorporated DuPage County near Westmont, according to Westmont Detective Michael Weibler.

Weibler said there were also two individuals who died with heroin in their system, though

the drug was not the sole cause of death.

On a broader scale, DuPage County officials have called the drug’s growing use an epidemic.

In 2013, there were 46 heroin-related deaths in DuPage

WESTMONT – The Westmont Park District Fitness Club did not see the stereotypical rush of new faces during the first week of 2014, but it has plenty of programs and activities planned throughout the year to keep Westmont residents fit.

The family fitness facility offers its members not only basketball and racquetball courts, a cardio room and weight room, but also specialized fitness programs led by trained instructors, according to Membership Services Coordinator Jacqui Polz.

“It’s a well-rounded facility,” said Polz, also a trainer and instructor at the gym.

“The cost is great for everything that’s included.”

When it comes to preparing fitness programs at the facility, Polz said there are a few different ways to bring in new classes, including ideas from the park district, suggestions from members or proposals from the instructors themselves.

“We need to freshen up what we are offering,” Polz said. “We look at what the trends [are] in the fitness world.”

Ty Warner avoids jail time for tax evasion SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – Oak Brook billionaire and Beanie Babies creator H. Ty Warner will not be seeing the inside of a jail cell for pleading guilty last year to evading taxes.

A federal judge sentenced Warner to two years probation Tuesday, which includes community service, according to media reports.

Warner, 69, is the sole owner of TY Inc., a Westmont-based company that designs and sells plush toy animals, including Beanie Babies. He pleaded guilty last year to tax evasion after failing to report income he

Prosecutors had been pushing for prison time for the Beanie Babies creator, who failed to report $25 million in income he kept in Swiss bank accounts.

“The employees looked forward to it so we wanted to continue collecting coats [despite the Karen Center closing],” Casey said. “And that’s when we found Downers Grove FISH.” Since joining with FISH, the coat drive has not only expanded to get local schools involved but also community members throughout the area. Casey said the program has evolved into something much larger.

WESTMONT – Imagine weathering these winter storms without an insulated, fur-hooded warm winter jacket. For the past 15 years, one Westmont resident has been trying to tackle that reality for many residents in the area.

Although Cathy Casey can’t recall as to why she began the coat drive, she said it’s clear why she coordinates it year after year.

“It’s really heartwarming to see people being so generous and seeing the community work together,” Casey said.

“Also, it’s really fun to see how excited the employees are and to know that people are benefiting from this project… It’s very heartwarming to me.”

Casey, director of human resources for the Village of Westmont, originally donated the drive’s coats to the now defunct Karen Counseling Center in Westmont. When it closed, she turned the efforts toward the Downers Grove

December through the end of January, Casey said.

The idea to add a second drive came after realizing new winter coats are often given as Christmas gifts, she said. “[When] we did a donation prior to the holiday, those coats went right away,” she said. “We’re just trying to be sure people have the coats.”

Typically, the village ends up donating about a half-dozen to a dozen large garbage bags of winter gear to FISH, according to Casey.

“That’s what keeps us excited year after year,” she said.

With the recent temperatures reaching around minus 15 accompanied by plummeting wind chills, it’s exciting to know they’re helping others.

“When we drop [the coats] off and see how happy they are. They’re so thrilled,” she added.

“I hope that eventually when I’m not here, that someone will continue it. I see this continuing for a long time.”

Q: My husband grinds his teeth at night.

Sometimes it drives me out of the room. What can we do?

A: The good news is that, yes, there are steps that can help your husband with his–and your– problem. The technical name for your husband’s condition is bruxism. Some experts estimate that as many as 10 percent of the population deal with this grinding. And that includes children right through the elderly.

The habit is not necessarily confined to night time. People who grind their teeth in their sleep generally have no idea they’re doing it. And they may wake up feeling fine. Others, however, wake with some combination of jaw, shoulder and neck pain. Bruxism also can significantly wear teeth and loosen them. In severe cases it can crack tooth enamel and chip or break teeth.

During sleep, bruxism can cause a person’s jaw to clench at a pressure up to six times greater than the pressure during waking hours.

Cause of bruxism can vary. Stress, a sleep disorder, an abnormal bite or crooked or missing teeth all can be factors. The best person to talk to if you’re suffering from bruxism is your dentist.

Whatever the cause, your dentist will know what step to take to deal with it. If it’s stress, for instance, it’s possible that physical therapy or counseling could help. Muscle-relaxing medication or a night-time mouth guard, specially fitted by the dentist, may be the answer.

WESTMONT – Registration has opened for the Westmont Fire Department’s 2014 Spring Citizens Fire Academy.

The academy will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 19 through April 9. The program will help citizens understand the department’s rescue and firefighting operations as well as other services.

The program’s curriculum is separated into three parts: classroom participation, handson practical training and live fireground activities. It is not designed for training future firefighters but instead to give residents an inside look at the profession.

Residents interested in participating must be 18 years of age or older, in good standing within the community and work or live in Westmont. There is no fee. Applications can be requested through Chris Hardy at 630-981-6402 or chardy@westmont.il.gov.

A YouTube video showing a goose flying through the front windshield of an airplane reportedly flying over Downers Grove has gone viral, with more than 155,000 views by Monday morning.

The pilot and passenger of the small plane appear uninjured in the video as the goose flies through the front window and partially lands in the back of the plane.

According to media reports, the pilot and passanger were able to return to the airport unharmed.

“We want to be proactive and make sure we educate our parents and community on heroin and heroin addiction,” Carey said. “Anything we can do to keep students safe we want to be involved with.”

Carey said even though Westmont has been fortunate with the low number of drug-related incidents, the community can still be diligent with providing information and raising awareness.

Looking beyond the presentation, Carey said he hopes it helps to educate students and community members to make smarter decisions.

“I hope we raise people’s awareness about the seriousness of the use of heroin,” Carey said, “And that if there is someone who has knowledge of a fellow student with any type of drug [problem] that they’ll come forward, if not to police, then to a school official.”

Cronin: DuPage County follows best practices of a small business

Cronin gave his remarks Jan. 8 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The chambers of Westmont, Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle participated in the event, which was sponsored by Choose DuPage.

Much of the speech extolled the county’s fiscal responsibility. By spending taxpayer dollars responsibly, he said, DuPage government could avoid

raising property taxes for the sixth straight year and keep money in residents’ pockets.

ty’s balanced 2014 budget, the reduction of employee benefits and the elimination and consolidation of redundant or unnecessary districts as examples of the ongoing effort to scale back spending.

“The challenge for [the county] is to be the example of how to take care of our affairs in the area that we can influ-

ence,” he said. “We want to demonstrate how we can find efficiencies.”

That political environment has led to the lowest unemployment rates, the most educated workforce and the lowest industrial vacancy rate of any county in northeast Illinois, Bedalov said.

The developing Rev3 industrial innovation center project headlined by Choose DuPage shows the county is on the cutting edge of new manufacturing, according to Cronin.

He also discussed the importance of public transportation to the future of the county and emphasized a desire to reform or restructure area public transit. While he said he is happy considering streamlining and combining services, he maintained that the main issue is the state funding disparity between Chicago and its surrounding counties.

“We have public transit needs out here, we are subsidizing the CTA, we are subsidizing a lot of what goes on in the city of Chicago,” he said.

“I’m happy to help out my fellow man, but you know, there’s an appropriate amount and degree.”

DOWNERS GROVE – The U.S. House of Representatives voted Dec. 8 in favor of a bill co-sponsored by Rep. Peter Roskam R-Ill. named the Poison center network Act intended to ensure that poison control centers receive the resources they need to save lives.

The bill now moves to the Senate for a vote. If approved, it will go to the president’s desk for signing.

“The House passed an important piece of legislation [Dec. 8], making funding for poison control centers a priority,” Roskam said in a statement.

“Poison Control Centers are vital to the safety of our

communities and the efficiency of our hospitals. Every year poison centers save thousands of Emergency Room visits, and for every $1 of funding for poison centers, the government saves over $13 in reduced health care costs and lost productivity,” he said. “This legislation ensures poison centers can continue to give lifesaving advice and provide assistance in emergencies to keep our loved ones safe.”

To promote the bill, he recently hosted an event with the IPC and Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove to emphasize the need for poison centers and the bill that helps fund them.

We have the comprehensive solution to end homelessness: The interim (overnight) housing sites are just one of the services we provide in our comprehensive solution to end homelessness. We also have a Client Service Center open weekdays, which provides basic needs, support groups and case COMMUNITY management; an employment VOICE program which partners Carol with 31 employers in the Simler community; and a permanent supportive housing program with 76 apartments throughout the county.

We serve our neighbors: Seventy one percent of the people we serve listed their last address in DuPage County.

We have seen a 44 percent increase in the number of children and 35 percent increase in families during the past two years: To accommodate these families, we provide a family outreach program for participants in temporary housing, staying with friends or in hotels. Case managers ensure these families stay linked to community resources and create a plan for permanent housing. Last year this program served 199 individuals; 64 percent are now in stable housing, including 44 adults and 84 children.

Our greatest need for volunteers is in the spring and summer: As the seasons change, our interim (overnight) housing sites change as well. With these shifts and volunteers’ vacations, we always need additional volunteers.

We have a new respite program: This short-term residential program allows individuals who are homeless to have the opportunity to rest after being discharged from a hospital, while providing access to medical care, support services and options for housing. The respite program has served 44 individuals and 45 percent are now in stable housing.

Our new online volunteer training launched this month: This training was made possible by a grant from the Spirit of Volunteerism Fund of The DuPage Community Foundation. Volunteers are able to access a web-based training on topics such as crisis intervention, risk management and volunteer responsibilities.

Good Samaritan Hospital Assistant Director of Trauma Dr. James Cole deploys to Afghanistan this month with the Navy Reserves for his third tour of duty in the Middle East.

We introduced the story of a Good Sam Hospital surgeon heading to Afghanistan for his third tour in the Middle East with a simple headline: “Service over self.” We thought that perfectly summed up the attitude of Dr. James Cole, who joined the Navy as a medical student in 1988. Godspeed, Dr. Cole!

DOWNERS GROVE POLICE PARTICIPATING IN THE 2014 ILLINOIS TRAFFIC CHALLENGE Traffic safety is one of the highest priorities for the Downers Grove Police Department. Department personnel work year-round to educate our citizens, beginning with preschool students, on the importance of being safe in a vehicle, on a bike, and as a pedestrian. Aggressive and consistent traffic enforcement coupled with educational efforts has the greatest chance of reducing the incident of traffic crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

The Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge was created to recognize law enforcement agencies for their efforts in addressing traffic safety issues. This program is modeled after the National Chiefs Challenge awards developed by the International Association of Chief’s of Police to target problematic traffic issues including speeding, impaired driving, and use of seat belts and child safety seats. The Downers Grove Police Department will be participating in the 2014 Traffic Challenge by focusing on enhancing their educational and enforcement campaigns related to speeding, impaired driving, and seatbelts.

Please do your part. Buckle-up on every trip, every time; make sure your children under the age of eight are restrained in a properly fitting child safety seat. Obey the speed limit – especially in school zones or construction zones, and do not drink and drive. It is the police department’s goal to have a safe new year. Please make it your goal as well.

POTHOLE REPAIR The Village is inspecting roads and filling potholes using a hot asphalt mix. Crews will first focus on primary roads, according to the Snow Route map, then move on to secondary roads. This activity has begun and is expected to take the entire week as crews work to inspect and make repairs along all routes. Many of the calls received so far have been for potholes along roads that the Village does not maintain like Ogden Avenue or Butterfield Road. Cemetery Foundation in search of Civil War vets’ descendants

By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Oak Hill and Oak Crest Cemetery Foundation is getting a boost this winter in its restoration efforts from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. In addition to other work, the organizations are looking for descendants of certain Civil War veterans buried in the cemeteries to sign applications for new grave markers that would be paid for by the federal government.

Of the 44 Civil War veterans in the cemeteries, two graves are unmarked, and two more need completely new markers to replace old damaged ones.

The federal government will pay for veterans’ grave markers if there is a descendant to sign the application.

“I can’t sign for it,” said David Bailey Sr., a member of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. “We do all the paper work, we just need somebody to sign it.”

There is more research to be done, but the organizations believe Frank C. Moberg, who lived from 1839 to 1917, is buried in Oak Hill cemetery, though there is no marker.

Same with Herman Piltz (1830-1898), whose last name was also spelled Peltz, Pils, Pels and Pilz. He fought in the 52nd Ohio Infantry.

There is anecdotal evidence that Moberg fought in the war

but the organizations have not found concrete proof, yet.

The two markers that need to be replaced belong to Judson Farrar (1836-1863), who fought in the 8th Illinois Cavalry, and Matthias Keuchel (1829-1874) who fought in the 13th Illinois Infantry.

Farrar’s marker is of specific interest, said Oak Hill/Oak Crest Foundation Board Member Lois Sterba, because he is the grandson of the man who founded the cemetery, Dexter Stanley.

“The people who are buried there deserve at least to have the graves marked so that in future years people will be able to recognize them,” she said.

In addition to the new markers, the Sons of Union Veterans

also plans to help the foundation remove brush and otherwise tidy the area around the graves in the old cemeteries, as well as clean the markers.

Both graveyards have fallen into disrepair from vandalism and lack of maintenance, and the foundation formed last year to organize volunteer efforts to restore the cemeteries.

The older of the two, Oak Hill, is the oldest cemetery in Downers Grove and houses the graves of some of Downers Grove’s prominent early families and pioneers, along with the graves of Civil War veterans. It was founded by the Stanley family when Dexter Stanley buried his son-in-law, Luther Farrar, in 1836, Sterba said.

The two cemeteries sit side-

by-side in unincorporated DuPage County near Downers Grove and Lisle at the corner of Howard and Glenview avenues.

The organizations plan to have a dedication ceremony this spring after the work is completed.

Bailey also helped to spearhead two similar efforts in Plainfield and the Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago.

“These guys often made the ultimate sacrifice, and most of them offered to make it, and they had short lives after the war,” he said. “It’s something that we should do.”

engineer designed a nifty, laser-cut steel display to hang the medal from the wall. Unlike many products that were already on the market, the display gave the medal a more

polished presentation, instead of just an everyday hook.

Fast forward five years, and his wife, artist Nell Posmer, has grown the product into a business named Blue Diamond Athletic Displays offering more than a dozen different variations on the design, including some made from solid oak. Anything she can draw, he can engineer and cut with the laser at work.

This year, she secured the exclusive medal display licensing agreement for the 2014 and 2015 Boston Marathons, bringing the story full circle.

It promises to be a big boost in exposure and sales for their business.

“We are excited,” Nell said.

“It is a small mom-and-pop company. We did create a wonderful product, and we never cheapened our product.”

Posmer began courting the Boston Marathon organizers more than a year ago after selling the displays at smaller races for the last few years.

“I got the biggest one under my belt now, so I need to tackle the other five [major marathons],” she said. “I don’t think anything is easy, you just have to work hard for it.”

She first saw the potential in the display when she brought it with her to the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. She only had the original display her husband made for himself, but she brought it along to her tent

By the end of the day more than 50 people had given her their contact information so that Ken could make them a display for their medals, she said.

“At that point we were really thinking about it, obviously there was a need for this in the market,” she said.

She first tried for the Boston Marathon license last year, and the family was in Boston to meet with race organizers during the tragic bombing. Posmer and her family were blocks away from the explosion near the finish line. Her brother was running in the race, but neither he nor her family were injured.

“This year we are able to return for a good [reason],” she said. “We don’t want to define the Boston Marathon with what happened last year.”

The couple has designed the wood display and several other metal variations.

“This is an American dream coming true,” said Nell, who is from Sri Lanka. “We have been so blessed by all of our customers.”

Displays can hang multiple medals, and range in price from $65 to $170.

He was employed by Argonne National Laboratory for over 35 years. Bill was a long time volunteer and valued member of the Steam Department at the Illinois Railway Museum.

To the person who responded to the teenager who wanted a break: You wrote, “Do you think life will give you a break?” and “By not getting a break now, you will be prepared for life when it doesn’t give you a break.”

Wow! You sound incredibly bitter. I’d like to know how you spent your free time as a child! When I was a kid (a long, long time ago), I had free time during school breaks just like everyone else. The only time in our lives that we get free time is when we’re in school (or retired) and what’s wrong with that? I don’t know what motivated the parents of the teenager who complained.

Maybe they have a reason for what they’re doing, but what you wrote is kind of severe.

Birding club provides outlet for nature lovers

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com During a week in which temperatures plummeted and snow piled up more than a foot, a group of hardened nature-lovers braved the cold in the name of birdwatching.

The DuPage Birding Club holds more than 80 field trips every year for local birders, including the first weekend of the year at Lyman Woods Forest Preserve that featured 23 degree temperatures and a 7:57 a.m. start time.

“Birds are incredibly engrossing,” said Club President Linda Padera of Western Springs. “You can see them almost any time of day or night, depending on where you are and the season.”

Despite the poor conditions, the nine person group saw about 225 birds, according to group leader Joan Campbell of Downers Grove.

Padera said her involvement with the club, like many other members,’ grew from a love of

nature established at a young age, while watching birds with her mother in the backyard of her childhood home in Detroit.

She spent several years birdwatching on her own before slowly meeting other birders who recommended she join the club.

“It’s great to bird with people who love to bird,” she said.

“A lot of it is kind of on your own, but after awhile you get to meet an awful lot of people who share your interest.”

Former president and club member Diann Bilderback of Winfield said she began birding after curiosity overtook her during a walk in a local forest preserve. Soon after, she bought a field guide and took it with her while exercising.

“As I was out walking, I’d see a bird and I’d try to identify it,” she said. “It was a little game for me.”

When she stumbled upon a group of birdwatchers some years ago during the club’s annual New Year’s Day walk at Morton Aboretum, she was

“I was delighted to discover there was this community out there to engage with because I had done it on my own for over a year,” she said. “I was pretty excited to learn it wasn’t just me out there by myself with a book.”

In fact, the club’s membership is at an all-time high, Bilderback said, with 280 watchers, making it one of the

largest clubs in the state.

Club outings generally consist of small groups, usually between 10 and 15, and are focused on a particular habitat and time of year, and the types of birds that can be seen in those conditions, she said. Experienced leaders, including some of the region’s foremost experts, take longtime birders and novices alike through natural areas all over the county.

Bilderback said her interest in the pastime comes not only from her enjoyment of the birds and the environment, but also from the challenge.

“There is constant learning. If you’re a person that likes learning and exploring, then birding is a lifetime hobby, because you’ll never run out of things to learn,” she said. “It’s a constant process of discovery.”

Also if your dog is really old and only gets groomed twice a year please use you regular groomer…. it is very stressful for an older dog to be groomed by a new person. We

recommend for your dog’s health and well-being keep using your regular groomer.

Antonino’s serves Italian hometown favorites LA GRANGE – My family and I have been dining at Antonino’s Ristorante in La Grange for as long as I can remember. In fact, there’s a good chance my first bite of restaurant Italian food – likely spaghetti – was consumed there.

Antonino’s is a destination in La Grange, especially for commuters in the vicinity of La Grange’s Stone Avenue train station. Riders on the way home from work often can be seen making the detour into Antonino’s to pick up a pizza for the family.

One of the best things about this restaurant is how little it has changed in the past 25 years. Its traditional Italian restaurant interior and the way the windows fog in the cold is something that always draws me back. Even the menu is largely the same – a special plus for my dining companion. Taking the family dinner to heart, I invited my brother to accompany me.

Now, my brother is the kind of person who always orders the same thing. When he’s in the mood for Chinese, it’s General Tso’s chicken from Moy Goy Inn just down the street. When it’s a burger, a trip to Palmer Place is required. Breakfast? Well, that’s always at Cafe Calbay for a skillet made with corned beef hash, poached eggs and American cheese.

But for Italian? There’s only one place: Antonino’s for spaghetti and meatballs.

Besides Antonino’s pizza, I think it likely he’s never tried anything else on the menu. I set out to change that on our visit, but traditions die hard.

To whet our appetite, we ordered two appetizers neither of us had tried in the past: fried calamari and bruschetta. The calamari was incredibly crispy, and the bruschetta was just the right amount of toasty goodness piled high with garlic, tomatoes and basil. Fantastic.

TheraCORE brings personal attention back to physical therapy Five years ago, two physical therapists opened TheraCORE, Therapeutic Center for Rehabilitation and Exercise, dedicated to building a treatment model based in comprehensive patient care and attention to the individual.

Amy Goebbert and Jen Bazan had spent more than a decade in the field, and five years working for a large therapy chain, when they opened TheraCORE in Lockport.

Exercise benefits the brain, too

R

egular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases.

Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power.

According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of “Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter,” exercise has a direct impact on the brain. That’s because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well.

As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mental health is hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.

Improved mood Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill don’t just pay shortterm dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy, or a placebo pill. Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active.

Blumenthal’s study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood.

In a review of 11 studies that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a

powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.

Antidote to anxiety Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The body’s nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the body’s heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety).

any adults find themselves feeling drowsy in the hours after they eat lunch. A heavy lunch, a staid office atmosphere or a combination of the two can make professionals feel sleepy as the workday winds down. Though some might opt for a second cup of coffee, the immediate energy boost provided by caffeine quickly wears off, leaving men and women feeling even more tired as a result. Oftentimes, the right mid-afternoon snack can provide the energy boosts adults need to stay productive throughout the workday. The following are a handful of healthy snacks that tend to provide a lot of energy. * Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more people are opting for this snack that’s rich in calcium, protein, phosphorous, and zinc. Traditional yogurt tends to provide a quick energy boost, as it is generally easy to digest, before that boost quickly fades. Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt, so it does not digest so easily, producing more sustained energy levels as a result.

However, Greek yogurt is also loaded with protein, helping men and women feel fuller longer. That can be beneficial for those who want to lose weight, as the feeling of fullness that Greek yogurt provides means those who eat it are less likely to eat more snacks throughout the day. * Whole grains: Whole grain snacks are loaded with energizing ingredients, including fiber, iron, magnesium, and protein. Whole wheat snacks are also loaded with B vitamins, which help people fight fatigue and stabilize blood sugar levels. In addition, the body takes longer to absorb the complex carbohydrates found in whole wheat snacks, which means the body can maintain stable blood sugar levels for extended periods of time, and that leads to a long-lasting energy boost. White bread and simple carbohydrates provide an immediate, yet temporary, energy boost when people’s blood sugar levels spike.

But once that initial energy boost subsides, men and women will be left feeling fatigued. * Edamame: Many people may know edamame from recipes, but

few might know edamame can be an energy-boosting snack as well.

Edamame are boiled soybeans that are rich in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Each of these things helps the body sustain energy levels. In addition, edamame is also packed with a trace mineral known as molybdenum that helps cells function properly while enhancing alertness and improving concentration. * Almonds: Almonds are loaded with ingredients that increase energy levels, including vitamin E, phosphorous, vitamin B2, and magnesium, which serves numerous beneficial functions, including aiding in the production of energy and relieving stress and anxiety.

Because they are rich in protein and fiber, almonds take longer for the body to digest, which means energy levels will stay up for longer periods of time than they would for those snacks that are easily digested. Almonds also contain healthy fats that curb appetite, making it less likely that men and women who snack on almonds will overeat and find themselves fighting the fatigue that’s often a byproduct of overeating.

Tips for yoga beginners

hough it might once have been considered a trend, yoga has long since moved on from trendy territory to become a more widely accepted discipline that is practiced by millions for its positive impact on mental and physical health. Though yoga is an ancient practice, only recently has it become so popular in the western hemisphere, where Sports Marketing Surveys found that roughly 20 million Americans over the age of 18 practiced yoga in 2012. That's a considerable increase from just four years earlier, when just under 16 million Americans admitted to practicing yoga.

The growing popularity of yoga likely comes as no surprise to its many practitioners, who often credit yoga with relieving stress and improving overall fitness. In addition, yoga can also help alleviate chronic pain and, according to the Mayo Clinic, reduce risk factors for chronic conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure.

While yoga is beneficial in many ways, it's important that men and women not mistake yoga for medical treatment.

Though yoga may be part of an individual's treatment plan, it's still necessary that men and women with medical conditions rely on their health care providers for treatment. For example, doctors may recommend yoga to individuals dealing with elevated stress levels, but doctors also may want their patients to take certain medications in order to lower those stress levels. Yoga on its own may be effective, but men and women should still seek professional medical treatment when dealing with health problems.

It's also important that men and women beginning a yoga regimen not take it lightly. Though the atmosphere in a typical yoga studio tends to be serene, yoga is a physically demanding discipline, and those unprepared to deal with such demands often find themselves suffering from injuries. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, injuries to the neck, shoulders, spine, legs, and knees are possible when practitioners of yoga do not exercise proper technique and caution. So it pays for beginners to heed the following warnings when beginning a yoga regimen. * Work with a professional. No matter how long your neighbor insists he or she has practiced yoga, it's still best that you learn the discipline from a

certified instructor. Your neighbor might know all of the poses, but an instructor with credentials can help men and women with preexisting medical conditions avoid poses that can exacerbate such conditions. Novices might not know that certain poses can increase injury risk for sufferers of osteoporosis, spinal problems and high or low blood pressure. When trying yoga for the first time, always work with a professional, making sure to discuss any preexisting medical conditions before your initial session. * Take things slowly. Its reputation as a calming discipline often gives beginners the mistaken impression that yoga is an easy discipline to grasp. However, it's best for beginners to take things slowly before attempting to perform difficult stretches and poses. Yoga is not a competition, so give yourself adequate time to learn proper breathing techniques and figure out ways to maintain your balance. Once you have mastered such techniques, you can then begin to try your hand at more advanced poses. * Warm up before each session.

Men and women should warm up before beginning any exercise regimen, and yoga is no exception. Stiff, cold muscles can lead to serious injury whether you're playing basketball or stretching into a yoga pose. Warm up your muscles with a few minutes of light cardiovascular exercise before beginning a yoga session to reduce your risk of muscle tears or pain when you start stretching or posing. * Dress appropriately. Flexibility is essential when practicing yoga, so make sure your clothing is not restrictive. Women can buy pants made specifically for yoga that stretch easily, making it easier to perform various poses and stretches.

Men may also be able to find pants made specifically for yoga, but if not, athletic shorts or track pants can work just as well. * Stop if you feel any physical problems. It is not uncommon, especially for beginners, to experience feelings of dizziness or feel as if your body is becoming overheated during yoga. In such instances, stop immediately, as yoga is supposed to be a pain-free discipline. Ask the instructor for help the moment you start to feel faint, dizzy, overheated, or injured. Physical problems during yoga may be a byproduct of dehydration, so be sure to begin your session fully hydrated and remain so throughout your workout.

Sophomore Annie Carlson and junior Mara Casper have been the team’s top scorers in recent games. Carlson, a 5-foot-9 guard, helps provide the small Sentinels a little bit of height while also being able to score points.

“Annie is a nice aggressive player,” McCord said. “She does a little bit more. She’s a little more finesse than Mara.

Mara is more of a shooter. Annie is more of a go to the basket finesse player.

“When [Casper] finds her range, she gets very comfortable and does a good job.”

In a recent game at Riverside Brookfield on Jan. 8, the Sentinels lost 63-46. It was a high-scoring game for Westmont, but they couldn’t keep up with the Bulldogs, a Class 4A school that upped its record to 17-4 with the win.

“I thought we did a pretty good job,” McCord said.

“We just know that we can’t give up 63 points in a game.

We don’t have the capacity to score that many points. We had too many turnovers and unforced turnovers. Some of our shot selection was shaky

After traveling to Dwight on Monday, Westmont will start play in the Interstate Eight Conference tournament on Thursday. The Sentinels have struggled in I-8 play so

far, but will have a chance to make up for that in the tournament. Westmont opens tourney play at home before heading to Reed-Custer to finish the tournament.

Once the weeklong tournament ends, Westmont has five more games on the schedule

before entering the postseason.

McCord is hoping that a full squad will be able to make some noise in the postseason.

“We’re getting good play out of some people,” McCord said. “Better play than I thought.”

Suburban Life ATHLETE OF THE WEEK PEYTON WINTERS Downers Grove North Junior | Basketball Why Winters was selected: Winters scored 12 points in the first quarter and had a game-high 20 as the Trojans remained perfect in conference play with a 54-41 win over York.

Peyton Winters went out for the track and field team for the first time last year, but basketball, the sport she’s played since she was in grade school, is still her No. 1 sport. She showed as much during Saturday’s game against York as her 20-point effort helped the Trojans remain unbeaten in West Suburban Silver play.

Winters, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week, spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about her big game and the team’s success this season.

What was it like for you in the first quarter?

I think we came really ready to play. We hadn’t had a conference game in a while, so we were really excited and really focused and came out with a lot of energy. We were just trying to play our game and we were good to go.

Did it feel like anything you threw up was going to go in?

At times, there were some shots where I was like, ‘Well, I guess I’ll take it,’ but for the most part I think I went up a little bit stronger than I usually do. That was a big part of it.

After struggling last year, what’s it been like for the team this season?

It’s been so much fun, and that’s been a big part of it.

We’re such a close close group of girls, and when we go out there and play it’s not just about winning but about having a ton of fun. When we win it’s even better, but because we’re so close we work well together and it’s been easy for us to win.

How would you describe your role on this team?

I just try to be the best team player I can be and pick up my teammates when I can.

Senior forward Melissa McLean and junior starting guard Megan Muench were lost for the season with ACL injuries, adding to the Mustangs’ challenge of remaking the team this winter.

“Every team out there goes through a year or two where they’re trying to rebuild the program,” South head coach Lyndsie Long said. “[The injuries] don’t help the cause, but that happened a while ago and I keep telling the girls we need to learn to play without them.”

The learning process continued Friday in a 61-42 loss to conference foe and West Suburban Gold-leading Willowbrook.

“I knew Willowbrook was a really good team,” Long said. “Their record shows it, but when you go down and you have five or six plays where we’re not scoring and then [the other team is] scoring, I just tell the girls, ‘We have to take it one at a time.

We can’t rush on offense and have a bad offensive play.’

“We have to take our time and look for the good shot, and just take it one posses-

sion at a time.”

Vashae Easley had backto-back buckets for South early in the second quarter, and the Mustangs used a 6-0 run at the end of the third quarter and early in the fourth to cut the deficit to 44-30, but they got no closer.

South was scheduled to play York Monday in a West Suburban Conference crossover before hosting WSG rival Leyden this weekend.

A week’s worth of practice could be just what the Mustangs need as they look to build momentum in the second half of the season.

“I told my girls when we got back from winter break there were two ways to look at it,” Long said. “They can look at it as either our injures are preventing us from being the best team we can be, or let’s play our butts off, play together and compete every single game.

“I see improvement, but at the same time I see room for improvement.”

Her age is no hindrance – head coach Lyndsie Long is already confident putting the ball in Wesolowski’s hands during crucial parts of the game.

“Addyson took the point guard role [against Willowbrook] and went with it, she wasn’t scared,” Long said.

“That’s what I’m looking for — someone to handle the ball and be the voice of the team, and that’s what she’s been doing.”

Peyton Winters School: Downers Grove North Class: Junior Position: Forward Impact: Winters was a varsity player last year, but a year of seasoning and some extra confidence has done wonders for her game. The 6-foot-2 post player has height that presents matchup problems for opposing teams, and a wide array of post moves ensure she can score in the paint.

“She’s stepped up since last year, a lot, and grown up and has a tremendous amount of toughness,” North head coach Stephan Bolt said. “Now she’s more confident finishing around the rim and finishing strong. I think she’s gotten stronger defensively, too. Both ends of the floor she helps us out in a lot of ways.”

Salary cap could haunt the Bears Hub Arkush

As the Bears Vice President of Football Administration, General Counsel and lead contract negotiator Cliff Stein is one of the best “capologists” in the NFL. Nobody understands the salary cap or knows how to work with it better than Stein, and there are no better negotiators in the NFL either.

I can’t remember the last time the team targeted a free agent, convinced him to come to Chicago and Stein couldn’t fit him under the cap.

Still, the Bears will begin the 2014 NFL league year in a bit of salary cap hell and there’s very little Phil Emery and Stein can do about it without some painful cuts to the current roster.

The 2013 Salary cap was approxi-

mately $123 million and early projections are that it could go as high as $127 million in 2014. But of the current Bears under contract, nine Bears veterans, Jay Cutler, Julius Peppers, Brandon Marshall, Matt Forte, Lance Briggs, Jermon Bushrod, Martellus Bennett, Tim Jennings and Robbie Gould are occupying approximately $85 million of cap space according to spotrac.com.

If the $127 million figure proves accurate that will leave Stein just $42 million to spread among 44 players and that will be an impossible task if the Bears hope to add any proven talents via free agency.

Shea McClellin, Alshon Jeffery, Matt Slauson, Kyle Long, Jordan Mills, Stephen Paea, Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene are all almost certain to be back. Slauson just resigned and the rest are all in their rookie contracts and none of them have been around long enough to have those deals renegotiated to be more salary cap friendly.

There goes another $11.5 million in cap space, leaving $30.5 million and the club is still looking for starters at center, defensive end, defensive tackle, possibly one or two linebacker spots, at least one cornerback, safety, nickel back, punter and 28 reserves.

It’s a serious mess and none of it is Stein’s fault. It is the price of failing badly in the NFL College Draft during the past four to five seasons. Forget going back further than that as any players drafted prior to the last four or five years would be in their second contracts and have higher cap values.

The only significant starters with star potential on the Bears roster right now who were drafted in the last five years are Jeffery and Long. Every other significant contributor is in his second NFL contract and helping to stretch the Salary Cap. The Bears have almost no young talent saving them cap space.

The Bears do have the option of pushing a significant potion of Cutlers cap hit

into out years of his deal and almost certainly will have to, potentially creating as much as $10 million of extra room.

But what if Cutler doesn’t work out or gets hurt? Then your cap is strangled even worse in a few years if you have to replace him and carry dead cap money.

The Bears will also have to cut or restructure the deals of Peppers and Michael Bush, which will save about $12 million of cap space if they cut them, but they will then have to add another starting defensive end who will need to be a premier pass rusher and a dependable number two running back.

Emery and Marc Trestman have said their goal is to make the Bears younger on defense. Some part of that goal is borne out of need to deal with their cap issues.

But the reality is getting younger and getting better, with limited financial resources to make up for any missed draft picks is a truly difficult situation to be in.

tackles and an inability to pressure the quarterback, among other struggles.

Tucker should be able to help with the new hires to coach the linebackers and D-line, as he gets a chance to put more of a mark on this defense.

“We believe Mel is the right person to lead our defensive unit,” Trestman said. “He fully understands where we need to improve, has the skill set and leadership to oversee the changes that need to be made and to execute our plan to get the results we know are necessary.”

Trestman and Phil Emery were firm in their stance that, when healthy in the first three games, the defense played at a high level. That showed the faith they have in Tucker as a coordinator,

and he could be working with completely different personnel next season.

Tim Jennings, Stephen Paea and Briggs are the only regulars that should be back at their positions in 2014.

Major Wright, Corey Wootton, Melton, James Anderson, Williams, Charles Tillman, Jeremiah Ratliff and Collins are all free agents.

The futures of Chris Conte and Peppers are in question, and McClellin and Bostic could be at different positions.

With Tucker getting another year to prove himself, expect to see a more aggressive defense.

“We want a physical, fast, playmaking defense, a defense that causes disruption,” Emery said.

One game that sticks out as a potential blueprint of the

Bears’ 2014 defensive style is the win in Pittsburgh in Week Three.

According to Pro Football Focus, Ben Roethlisberger was under pressure on 20 plays, six more than any other Bears opposing quarterback.

They blitzed Big Ben 19 times, tied for the most all season.

After halftime, Roethlisberger started finding success under pressure, but the aggressive defense was too much. The Bears forced five turnovers in that 40-23 win.

As bad as the defense was, the Bears were a play away from winning the NFC North, which made the meltdown on that side of the ball all the more frustrating. Tucker gets another chance, and even though the coordinator is the same, expect the Bears’ defense to look much different next season.

The worst defense in Bears history cost two assistant coaches their jobs, but the leader of the unit will be back in 2014.

Linebackers coach Tim Tibesar and defensive line coach Mike Phair were fired but defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will return.

“We thank Mike and Tim for their effort and dedication.

They are men of high character and integrity,” Bears head coach Marc Trestman said in a statement Sunday. “These are not easy decisions and we do not attribute our lack of success on defense to two individuals.”

Both Tibesar and Phair’s units were marred by injuries. Thrust into the lineup,

rookies Jon Bostic and Khaseem Greene did not show the improvement the team wanted to see, especially down the stretch. The Bears were last in the league in run defense.

“I saw Khaseem do it right and Jon do it right, and I saw them both do it wrong,” Trestman said in his Jan. 2 news conference. “I did not see a consistency in their play.”

On the D-line, Henry Melton and Nate Collins both tore their ACL, while Julius Peppers and Shea McClellin did not produce up to expectations off the edges.

Someone was going to take the fall for a defense that allowed 6,313 net yards in 2013, and it went to the position coaches of the front seven, which made the same mistakes week after week: problems fitting the run, missed
