By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com WESTMONT – Citing it as the “fairest” avenue to acquire funding for much-needed stormwater improvements in town, the Westmont Village Board voted Thursday night to pursue a 0.5 percent sales tax increase.

Voters will now decide on the proposal as a referendum question will appear on April 7 election ballots. It needs a majority vote to pass.

The board voted narrowly 3-1 to pursue the funding mechanism Thursday. Trustee Bruce Barker was the lone dissenting vote, while Trustee Harold Barry III took a neutral stance with a “present” vote, deferring to the majority of the board. Trustee Jim Addington was absent from the meeting.

During months of discussion on stormwater improvements, officials weighed two funding options – either an increase in the local general sales tax or the creation of a stormwater utility fee that would have charged property owners a fee based on their amount of

The sales tax hike received “overwhelming support” from officials and the community over the utility fee option, according to Village Manager Stephen May. A 1 percent sales tax increase was originally proposed, but trustees sought to lower that figure to 0.5 percent in an effort to lessen the impact on local businesses. “[A half-percent] hike is easier to accept by the business community … though it will mean a slower revenue gain and will take longer to get substantive improvements done,” May said Thursday.

Efforts to find “a dedicated and ongoing revenue source” for stormwater projects were launched shortly after historic flooding in April 2013, McIntyre has said. “[Flooding] is not a Westmont-unique issue ... this has been challenging for all of Illinois,” McIntyre said in December.

The village will spend the next three months educating the public on the proposed sales tax hike and the necessary stormwater improvements, Mayor Ron Gunter said after the vote Thursday.

If approved, the total sales tax for most retail stores in Westmont would move to 7.75 percent. The sales tax would move to 9.25 percent for most places of eating in Westmont, as the Westmont Village Board enacted a 1.5 percent places of eating tax in September 2013 to help fund road repairs and various revenue losses.

WESTMONT – During a board meeting Tuesday night, Westmont School District 201 was expected to vote whether to pursue a third referendum request to fund school improvements.

The school board weighed placing a referendum on the April 7 ballot that would ask voters to approve a scaled-back plan with a lower price tag compared to the two prior referendums, both of which failed.

“The school board has listened to the community and this time around we are proposing to remove items that were not tightly focused on safety and security of the learning environments,” District 201 School Board President Marie Charlton said in a phone interview Monday.

If the school board gave the green light Tuesday night, the school district would ask constituents permission to issue

$19.7 million in bonds to address safety and access concerns.

That number is down from the $26 million proposed in the November 2014 referendum.

The new plan “would not remove the integrity of the project that focuses on safety and security,” Charlton said, but would remove several school improvements previously proposed in the referendums, including nixing a renovation of the pool at Westmont High School.

Charlton said the board is encouraged with the referendum results from November.

That plan was rejected by voters 56 percent to 44 percent but garnered 34 more percentage points compared to a similar referendum in March, which was overwhelmingly rejected 78 percent to 22 percent.

“The first time the public didn’t like the funding and last time there were questions on the necessity of some of the improvement projects,” she said “Now we’re limiting those extra things.”

If the school board decided not to pursue the referendum on Tuesday night, it would have to wait until spring 2016 – the next election after April 7.

Village coat drive to continue through Friday

WESTMONT – For the past several years, employees of the village of Westmont have spearheaded a community initiative to collect winter coats and donate them to area families in need. The second phase of this year’s drive will run through Friday.

Donations will be forwarded to local resource programs and food pantries. Items being collected include new and gently used coats (wash all items before donating) in all sizes, scarves, gloves and snow pants.

Monetary donations also are accepted.

Sexual assault still under investigation SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WESTMONT – Westmont police are still looking for a suspect in an alleged home invasion and sexual assault on New Year’s Day. According to police, a senior citizen reported a male suspect awoke her at gunpoint around 5 a.m. Jan. 1 inside her apartment in the 1100 block of South Williams Street, sexually assaulted her then forced her to drive him to an ATM and retrieve cash from her

The victim then dropped off the offender in the area of 83rd Street and Janes Avenue in Woodridge.

The victim was transported to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, according to police.

The suspect is described as

a dark-skinned male between 20 to 30 years old, 5-foot-10 to 6-foot with a stocky build, wearing a dark-colored, possibly leather, jacket.

Westmont police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and prosecution. Anyone with information is asked to call the Investigations Division at 630-981-6319 or email chiefofpolice@westmont. il.gov.

New e-book resource offers more content at Westmont library Lately, we have been hearing from the community that Westmont wants more e-books. You asked and we delivered.

I am happy to inform you that the Westmont Public Library now has its very own Cloud Library from 3M packed with hundreds of e-books available for you to check out at your convenience.

My favorite thing about COMMUNITY the Cloud Library is how VOICE easy it is to use. You just download the 3M Cloud Anna Library app, sign in with Behm your library card, find a book you want to borrow and start reading. It really is that easy. As a bonus, the app includes other useful features like the ability to build reading lists, save your favorite categories and rate books.

My second favorite thing about the Cloud Library is that it offers content you cannot get from other library e-book services. You might be a fan of our other e-book platform, Overdrive’s Media on Demand. I am a fan too, since it offers thousands of e-books and e-audiobooks for immediate download.

There are certain titles such as J. K. Rowling’s new book, “The Silkworm,” that are not available on Overdrive. The good news is that “The Silkworm” and all of Rowling’s post-Harry Potter books are available via the Cloud Library along with books by many other popular authors.

Request: Install traffic signal on Ogden Avenue

I agree with the individual that a traffic signal would cost a lot less than a new fire and police station on Ogden Avenue. He must understand I have presented the problem of entering and exiting Ogden Avenue from the Burlington area to several different councils during the past 15 years. On one occasion, I presented Mayor [Betty] Cheever with more than 700 petitioners to have a signal installed. These petitions included several police officers that said it would help cut down the speeding, but nothing was done.

I will gladly sign the gentleman’s petition to get the new stations on an addendum if he will put forth the same effort to get a signal installed for us. I have not been able to get this done for 15 years and since then traffic has increased a hundred fold, including all the trucks and semitrucks that have avoided the tollways since the huge increase in tolls and are now using Ogden Avenue as a bypass.

Maybe, just maybe, this individual will get a signal installed for us.

HINSDALE – An event in February will discuss the dangers of substance abuse with Hinsdale Central High School students and the Hinsdale community.

Chris Herren, a former NBA basketball player with the Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets, will speak to community members and students at two events.

The first event will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Hinsdale Central High School gym. The event is open to all members of the Hinsdale community. A second event will be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 24, where Herren will address the Hinsdale Central student body.

Herren struggled with substance abuse throughout his basketball career and has been sober since Aug. 1, 2008, according to a news release from the Hinsdale Central Boosters Club.

Herren is the founder of The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization that provides educational and mentoring opportunities to people whose lives have been touched by addiction.

In May 2011, he released his memoir, “Basketball Junkie,” co-written with Bill Reynolds. It detailed some of his struggles with addiction.

The book was followed by the ESPN Films documentary, “UnGuarded,” directed by Jonathan Hock.

Herren will focus on topics including drunk driving, gateway drugs, peer pressure, bullying and cutting. He also will share national statistics on drug and alcohol use among teenagers.

She was also pre-deceased by her daughter, Carol McGill York (G. Frank) of Pittsfield, IL (2002); and two sisters, Laura Bell McNally (Donald) of Andover, MA, and Helen Bell Foss (Charles) of Wolfeboro, NH.

Hildegard was a homemaker for many years and then a bookkeeper for Security Mutual Insurance Co., she loved to sing and was a member of the Colombia Damen Choir and Schubert Lyric Chorus.

She loved to entertain, spend time with family and friends, golfing, sewing , gardening and music.

Water damage shuts down 15 DuPage Children’s Museum

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – The DuPage Children’s Museum in Naperville is closed while it cleans up and repairs damage caused by a flood last week.

Museum spokeswoman Dee Dee McDevitt said a large water main on the exterior of the building burst sometime between Thursday evening and Friday morning, causing water damage on all three levels. “[On Friday morning], the staff that comes in to turn on the water tables walked into a stream everywhere,” she said.

The museum is expected to be closed for at least a couple of weeks, and all museum programs have been canceled through Feb. 8.

McDevitt said the museum is not sure if the weather caused the water main

break, and professionals were immediately brought to the museum to assess the damage.

While the cost of the repairs is not yet known, she said the financial implications will be significant and the museum will be reaching out for donations.

The museum receives about 60 percent of its funding from donations and 40 percent from admission and program fees.

“The timing [of the closing] couldn’t be worse because during January, February and March, the museum experiences a high level of traffic,” McDevitt said.

However, she said the museum also is taking this opportunity with the repairs and construction needed to see if there are any improvements that can be made.

“The goal is to reopen better than ever before,” she said.

WATER METER READING DEVICE PROJECT The Village has begun a 12-month process of replacing the transmission units that send water meter readings from residential and business customer meters to the Village for water billing. The original transmission units, known as MTUs, were installed in 2002 and are beginning to fail. Nearly all of the 16,700 MTUs are located on the outside of customer homes or buildings.

The Village's vendor, Aclara, and their contractor Scope Services, will remove the existing MTUs and install the new ones at each building over the course of 2015.

There will not be service or billing disruptions when the units are replaced.

Water customers (residents and businesses) will be notified when work is planned to occur in their area. Scope will call customers twice: two weeks prior to the scheduled replacement and two days prior to the installation.

Most MTU replacements will take less than 30 minutes and will occur entirely on the exterior of the building, with the same exterior placement as the existing MTU. For locations where the MTU is inside a home or building, Scope will make an appointment with the customer to access the unit.

Scope will maintain a customer service line, 1-888-209-5075, to respond to inquiries from residents and businesses. Customers may also contact the Village with questions.

UTILITY BILL DIRECT DEBIT You can have your Village utility bill (water bill) paid automatically. Register for Direct Debit from your checking or savings account. Download the form found on the Village website, fill it out and return it OR sign up online after you register as an eUser. Payment will be deducted from the account on the billing due date once your bill shows "AUTOPAY - DO NOT PAY." Customers may also opt to receive their utility bill via email. It’s easy, secure, and takes just a few minutes to fill out the Email Authorization Form.

Customers registered for E-Water Bill will no longer receive a paper copy of their bill in the mail.

GENERAL WINTER REMINDERS Residents are reminded of the following: • Parking on streets is prohibited between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. when three or more inches of snow have fallen.

• A parking ban will be enacted on Village streets and public parking lots between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. when three or more inches of snow have fallen in a 24-hour period or less.

• It is against Village ordinance to shovel, place, or blow snow or ice onto the street, sidewalk or any right-of-way.

• Please remember to be a good neighbor and shovel your sidewalk, if you are able.

• If you have a fire hydrant nearby, please take care that is is cleared out and visible for firefighters.

CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION Free collection of fresh Christmas trees only, will be offered by Republic Services from January 5-16, 2015, on your regular garbage day.

The Park District has extended its Christmas tree recycling to January 19. Trees can be dropped off in the south parking lot in Hummer Park and the north parking lot at McCollum Park.

Trees must be free of tinsel, ornaments, and hooks and should not be placed in bags.

HOLIDAY LIGHT RECYCLING Don't throw away your tangled, frayed or burned-out holiday lights this year! The Village offers recycling of holiday tree lights and extension cords. A receptacle is available at the Public Works Facility, 5101 Walnut Avenue, through January 30, 2015.

Items may be dropped off during business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue.

WARRENVILLE – Two Brothers Tap House in Warrenville isn’t as showy a dining venue as its landmark Roundhouse digs in Aurora, but gives patrons a ringside seat at the actual brewery. The tasty fare complements not only Two Brothers’ extensive creations and sampling opportunities, but more than 50 additional bottled artisan brews from the U.S. and around the world.

Savvy fans of the craft beer enterprise, which has been growing by hops and bounds since brothers Jim and Jason Ebel took the leap in 1996, know they can time a weekend meal with a free tour of the brewery. They’re offered at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 1:30 p.m. Sundays, with no reservations needed.

But added circus aside, the Tap House is an attraction in its own right. Tables, booths and high-tops dot the industrial space, whose walls sport giant, framed versions of a variety of Two Brothers’ artistic beer labels.

The restaurant notes that all the meats are organic, and dishes are made from scratch.

An added perk is that the kitchen serves late, which my companion and I took advantage of after a busy Saturday.

Scanning the menu, I read the Brewer’s Reuben beef brisket is brined in-house for seven days and was sad to hear it had sold out earlier in the evening. But then I noticed the pulled pork, which is prepared with dry rubbed pork butt smoked over apple wood for five hours.

The meat was tender and perfectly spiced in a Lexington-style vinegar sauce. It was such a generous portion that I would have liked a bit more of the coleslaw that topped it in a zesty interplay of texture and flavor. In a nice touch for the wheat intolerant, gluten-free rolls can be substituted at no extra charge.

Trojans get first conference win Downers Grove North extends winning streak to five games

By ALEX SOULIER asoulier@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – A pair of injured starters and two days off school because of extreme cold temperatures could not derail Downers Grove North’s winning streak.

The Trojans capitalized off a parade to the free-throw line and a 22-point performance from senior Jordon Kedrowski to beat York 56-48 on Friday. It was DGN’s fifth straight win

and first victory this season in the West Suburban Silver conference.

“We fought through some adversity tonight,” head coach Jim Thomas said. “Devin [Blake] went down in practice with an ankle injury and Bowen [Marks] tweaked his knee. They will be back [this season] but weren’t ready to go tonight.”

Adding to the adversity were subzero wind chills Wednesday and Thursday that

forced District 99 to cancel school and the Downers Grove North coaching staff to relocate practice.

Despite the tumultuous week, the Trojans were able to create and execute an effective game plan for Friday night’s game.

“We thought that we would be able to pound them inside, grab rebounds and get to the free-throw line,” Thomas said.

“We also thought that would give us some open looks from the 3-point line.”

DGN made the most of their trips to the free-throw line, knocking down 21 of 25 attempts. Kedrowski also had the hot hand from beyond the

arc, as 12 of his team-high 22 points were 3-pointers.

“I missed a couple good looks early,” Kedrowski said. “But the coaches and my teammates just kept encouraging me and telling me to be aggressive with my shot selection. But they kept feeding me the ball, grabbing rebounds, creating second chances and that helped jump-start our offense in the second half.”

With the game tied at 22 at halftime, York began the third quarter with a 5-0 run punctuated by a three-point play from guard Jayvon Thomas, who ended the night with a gamehigh 23 points.

But DGN battled back, taking a 31-30 lead into the fourth

quarter. A Kedrowski 3 to open the final frame gave the Trojans a four-point advantage, and from there the visitors never looked back, outscoring York 25-17 in the last eight minutes.

Myles Farley added 11 points for the Trojans, while center Dave Edwards had nine points and nine rebounds.

Downers Grove North (9-5, 5-1) will host the three game, six-team Winter Classic invite from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Oswego East and Wheaton North kick off the event with a 1 p.m. tip, followed by Hinsdale Central and Glenbard North at 2:30 p.m. and DGN vs. Andrew at 4:15 p.m.

Mustangs stumble against conference-leading Morton

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove South got a glimpse of what it wants to be Friday night, but the Mustangs certainly aren’t there now.

DGS lost to Morton 76-41 on Friday in a West Suburban Gold game. DGS fell to 3-12 overall and 1-4 in the West Suburban Gold.

Morton used a 12-0 run to build a 20-6 lead in the second quarter and led by double digits the rest of the game. Morton’s 30-14 halftime lead expanded to 58-26 at the end of the third quarter.

DGS coach Kris Olson struggled to find a positive from his team’s performance.

“I don’t know what we take away from that game,” Olson said. “That’s what we want to be in two years. We’re not there yet. There’s not much you can take away from a game like that other than we need to grow and get better.”

Jon Strieter led the Mustangs with 12 points, all coming in the second half. Sophomore Denis Alibegovic made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Bonnett’s second-half surge not enough to power Redwings hoops SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Collin Bonnett scored 23 of his game-high 25 points in the second half, but it was not enough as the Redwings fell to Fenwick 62-60 in overtime.

Bonnett scored the final seven points of the fourth quarter for Benet (9-4 overall), including a layup and 17-foot jumper to tie the game with 35 seconds left. He also hit a trio of 3-pointers in overtime after the Redwings had climbed out of a 29-14 third-quarter hole.

Fenwick’s Jacob Keller split a pair of free throws after Bonnett’s 3 made it 59-57 with 24 seconds left. Benet had a chance to tie, but Bonnett’s off-balance trey missed, and Fenwick guard Quinn Fisher sank two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to give Fenwick a five-point lead before Bonnett’s

final 3 capped the scoring.

Dan Sobolewski scored 12 points for Benet, which resumes play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles. The Redwings also will participate in Wheaton Warrenville South’s MLK tournament Saturday and Monday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Westmont

The Westmont girls basketball team recently won backto-back games against Elgin Academy and Sandwich.

The Sentinels notched a decisive 67-11 victory against Elgin Academy on Saturday, then defeated Sandwich 43-40 on Monday. Annie Carlson had 13 points and Emma May had 13 rebounds in Monday’s conference victory against Sandwich.

Westmont will play at 5:30 p.m. Friday at rival Lisle.

The Benet girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, losing 8167 to Joliet Catholic in a battle between East Suburban Catholic powers.

Redwings guard Emily Eshoo notched a career-high 34 points on 11-for-14 shooting and 5 for 6 from 3, while Kathleen Doyle had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists for Benet.

But the Redwings (19-1) bounced back the following day, defeating Hinsdale Central 83-60 at the Fremd Chicagoland Invitational Showcase. Emily Schramek led Benet with 18 points, Eshoo had 17 points and Doyle added 12.

The Trojans lost consecutive games against York and Trinity on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Downers Grove North (9-6, 3-3) resumed West Suburban Silver play but could not overcome York, falling 45-26. Jaida Green had nine points and five rebounds in the defeat.

The Trojans then traveled to Fremd to participate in the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase but were no match for Trinity, which won 6133. Green led the way for the Trojans with 15 points, while Peyton Winters added eight points.

All starters scored in double figures Friday as the Mustangs defeated Morton 54-48.

DGS returned to the court the next day, downing Willowbrook 59-53. Vashae Easley scored 26 points and Kasandra Rugienius added 15 points against Willowbrook.

The Mustangs could not extend their winning streak Monday, losing 61-31 to York.

DGS now has a weeklong break before returning to action Jan. 21 against Providence Catholic.
