The Morrison City Council approved plans for summer events and a full day of activities at their meeting on Monday, Aug. 9.

The Morrison Rotary Harvest Hammer race is planned for the morning of Saturday, Sept. 18., with the council approving two more events for the day. The combined Main Street Block Party for Base, Genesee, and Cherry Streets will be from 4 – 11 p.m.

Though a family friendly event, this one will be targeted to grown-ups due to the businesses on the block. The businesses, Chamber of Commerce, and Department of Fun are still finalizing themes and plans, with updates to be provided at the next meeting. There will be dueling pianos and an outdoor beer garden.

Also on Sept. 18, the council approved a Bark Park fundraiser from 11 am. – 4 p.m. at the future dog park location. Plans include a “strut your mutt” talent show,

events approved in Morrison painted doghouse raffles, DJ and music, and food. Kathy Schmidt of the bark park team told the council they’re in the running for a $25,000 grant, which would help them reach their goal to fence in the park and start the sidewalk and curbing portion of the project. Supporters can cast their votes online through “PetSafe - Bark for Your Park.”

The board also heard a presentation from the Highway 30 Commission, with a request to consider a letter of support for the project that aims to expand the Lincoln Highway into a four-lane road. The commission is hoping to have a shovel-ready project when a transportation bill is passed, with members seeking written support from local communities including Morrison, Albany, and Fulton.

Council members expressed concerns about widening the road through Morrison, but the commission seeks to expand the rural roads only, with each city controlling their own roads within city limits.

The commission says many of the cities on

the two-lane road are bypassed, so the aim is to bring more travelers through the area.

The plan is to go to the IDOT with all the letters of support.

The council approved contributing up to $22,500 to the Morrison Chamber of Commerce for downtown Christmas lights.

With the new lights and poles in place, Chamber staff wanted to upgrade the decorations since the current ones are around 20 years old. LeAnn Schaefer presented candy cane and Christmas tree with LED light options at a cost of $300 each, with the council agreeing to take advantage of August sales by supporting the purchase of 75 decorations for the 73 downtown poles.

The council considered a request to amend an ordinance to raise the pruning tree height near roads from 9 ft. to 14 ft. but decided to research it more. They also discussed an offer by Moring Disposal to expand their trash and recycling services but would consider it at the next meeting, and approved pay requests for the downtown redevelopment project.

IN BRIEF Unserviceable flags ceremony set for Sept. 26

Resolution 440 of the 19th National Legion Convention states (in part) that all unserviceable American Flags which have been used for the decoration of veterans graves on Memorial Day (and other such service) be collected and inspected. Worn and unserviceable flags shall be condemned and properly destroyed of via burning.

American Legion Post 328 in Morrison collects unserviceable flags all year at their Retired Flags Drop Box at 306 E Main St. Other flags such as POW/MIA and state flags may be deposited as well.

The annual ceremony is conducted on the last Sunday in September at 12:30 p.m. This year’s ceremony is on Sept. 26 at Morrison Veterans Memorial Park, 150 E High St. (across from Northside School). In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be cancelled. The public is invited to attend and may also bring unserviceable flags. While the ceremony isn’t lengthy, lawn chairs are encouraged.

Morrison FFA Alumni fundraiser

Morrison FFA alumni and members are selling raffle tickets for a few fantastic prizes, with the drawing to be held Friday, Sept. 3 during halftime of the Morrison High School home football game.

Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20.

Prizes include a two-night stay at the Jail House Inn, Galena, rated as one of the best B&Bs in the USA, valued at $800, 1/4 angus beef valued at $400, and a Yeti cooler valued at $100.

Funds will support Morrison FFA students and their career and leadership development throughout the year. Tickets will be sold during the Whiteside County Fair, by contacting an FFA member or alumni, or by emailing gabrielle.cultra@morrisonschools.org.

The annual Whiteside County Farm Bureau’s Agriculture in the Classroom tractor drive took off from Fulton on Monday, Aug. 16, marking the start of Whiteside County Fair week. The 2021 ride began and ended at A.C. McCartney in Fulton, with nearly fifty riders taking the route north to Thomson and Carroll County, south on Fairhaven Rd., west on Spring Valley Rd., with a few rural roads in between. Ron Shank was the route organizer, taking the lead on his old Ford tractor.

The annual ride began in 2009 when the Whiteside County Farm Bureau was asked to help coordinate the event. Since then, riders have traveled more than 300 miles and helped raise nearly $24,000 for the county’s Agriculture in the Classroom program, according to the website.

The event sponsors were COUNTRY Financial, Bayer, Farmers National Bank, and Gold Star FS.

Tug Fest returned to downtown Port Byron over the weekend, with thousands of spectators visiting the riverfront for fireworks, carnival rides, food and drink, vendors, games, live music, and more. The weekend weather was perfect for the outdoor festivities and watching eleven teams compete in the tug of war against Iowa. Illinois secured the victory yet again, winning 8 out of 11 matches against their LeClaire rivals. Community blood drive July report

The July blood drive took place at St. Mary Catholic Church on Thursday, July 15. The American Red Cross goal for the drive was 58 good units and we collected 66 which is 113.8% efficiency! Deferral rate was 5.9% with ARC standards being 7%.

No shows were nine out of 68 scheduled appointments.

Thank you to Knights of Columbus members Terry Hoehn and Mark Kaiser who help clear out the church hall the night before the drive and put everything back after the drive.

Sponsor for the July Blood Drive was Kunes Country Auto Group of Morrison. Thanks to them for providing the monies for the canteen.

Also to the wonderfully flexible volunteers, Marcia Haag, Mary Ellen Brackemyer, Marsha Geerts, and Katie Swanstrom who managed the

kitchen by purchasing, preparing, and serving sandwiches, cookies, snacks, and drinks. Appreciation is also extended to St. Mary Catholic Church for letting us host our drives in their facility during the pandemic.

Three first-time donors stepped up to the plate; they were Jessica Weires, Arlyn Dykema, and one who did not want her name published. A total of nine double red cell/Power Red donors came in to give the ‘twice as nice’ gift of life. Eloise Bush to celebrate 101st birthday

Eloise Shipma Bush of 405 E. Lincolnway, Morrison, will celebrate her 101st birthday on August 29, 2021.

Eloise was born in Fulton and attended Fulton schools. She was married to Ken Bush for 68 years. Ken passed away in 2009. She is a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church, where she taught catechism and Bible study.

Eloise worked for many years in the office at Volckman’s/Ethan Allen furniture factory in Morrison. She was also a volunteer at Morrison Community Hospital and Resthave. She recently moved to Resthave, where she enjoys visits with her friends and family.

Eloise has a daughter and son-inlaw, Bonnie Bush and John Peart, who live in Chicago.

The second annual “Kicking Cancer One Ball at a Time” kickball tournament will be at Dorrance Park on Saturday, Aug. 28, with team registration open until Aug. 23. Family and friends are organizing the tournament in celebration of “the Incredible Ollie J” and his remission from cancer.

Proceeds of the tournament will benefit 3-year-old Oliver Huizenga of LeClaire, IA and his ongoing medical costs. At 15-months-old, Oliver was diagnosed with testicular cancer. His outlook is great after extensive surgery and treatments, but he requires ongoing medical treatment and monitoring for the next ten years.

Oliver is the son of Dylan and Katelyn Huizenga, formerly of Port Byron.

The single elimination kickball tournament will begin at 10 a.m. at Dorrance Park, 401 Agnes St. in Port Byron. Each team will consist of 11 people of which four must be female. The cost is $10 per person. To register, email a team roster, team name, and team captain’s contact info to oliverhuizenga1@gmail.com by Aug. 23. Registration fees can be paid in cash on the day of the tournament or via Venmo. Donations are also greatly appreciated.

Cordova FPD approves purchase of new ladder truck

The Cordova Fire Protection District approved the purchase of a 100′ Rosenbauer King Cobra Articulating Platform Ladder Truck on Thursday, August 12 during a special meeting.

Twenty members of the public were in attendance to show support for the decision.

A Truck Committee comprised of eight firefighters met numerous times and viewed multiple different brands of truck manufacturers prior to deciding to work with Doug Quam of Jefferson Fire and Safety of Middleton Wisconsin and Rosenbauer. After the discounts granted, the apparatus price is near $1.3 million.

The purchase will improve the firefighters’ capabilities in fire suppression and rescue efforts in the district. It will

Loved daughter of the late Tille (Silverstein) and Harry Bronstein and cherished daughter-in-law of the late Tee (Saltzman) and Jack Weinstine. Beloved and cherished wife of Lester Weinstine.

Phyllis was raised in Albany Park and was a graduate of Von Steuben High School. She attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated from Roosevelt University. After working as a social worker for the Cook County Department of Welfare, she devoted her life to her husband, family, and other

meaningful causes. She helped pioneer the first nursery school in Morrison and was a founding and active board member of the Whiteside County Hospice. Because of her zest for adventure, she exposed her girls to worldly travels, which she and Lester continued to do throughout the years. Tennis was a big part of her adult life and she enjoyed playing socially and watching her girls compete.

Additionally, she loved playing bridge, mah jong, and canasta, and threw beautiful dinner parties. Phyllis valued her friendships and the communities she established at Morrison Country Club, Rock River Country Club, Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert, and The Birchwood Club. Her Jewish identity was an important aspect of her life and she held committee positions at North Shore Congregation Israel.

“With the evolution of modern homes as well as the industrial presence in our fire district, from Exelon, 3M, Cordova Energy, all the way to Xylem, this apparatus will not only provide us with the capability to provide better, more efficient fire suppression and rescue operations if need be, but puts a large emphasis on the safety of our firefighters. With the number of firefighters decreasing, this apparatus will help us perform the job more safely and with less manpower,” said Firefighter and EMT Kyle Barber.

This beautifully manicured lawn at 14825 Norrish Road in Morrison belongs to Beth Renkes of Morrison. Beth and her late husband, Lester, bought this home in 2005. The stagecoach was built from scratch by Lester. Towards the back of the property are an antique tractor and an antique farm implement. Planted in front are fall blooming perennials.

The little shed to the left of the house is decorated with many interesting and unique items from days gone by. Wagon wheels, antique car parts, birdhouses and an old gas pump are just a few of the items that will attract the eye. What is really fascinating is the stained glass window on the west side of the building.

The garden areas surrounding the front of the house which contain shrubs, annuals, and perennials, also contain unique and fun décor. Beth enjoys sitting on her front porch and after chatting with her for an hour, I understand why. What a wonderful quiet place to sit, watch the birds and just relax!

1961: Location chosen for new bridge over Mississippi Sixty Years August 16, 1961

A site about 1,400 feet south of the present Lyons and Fulton bridge, connecting Fourteenth Avenue in Fulton with Nineteenth Avenue North in Clinton, has been chosen as the location for a new bridge across the Mississippi River.

Extensive improvements have been completed at Fulton State Bank to provide expanding operation announced President Henry Kiefer. The main front room has been completely remodeled providing five windows for tellers.

Total resources at the bank reached a new all-time high of $4,535,000.

Tiffany Engelkens, wife of Jim Engelkens formerly of Fulton, is a patient in the Burn Unit at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison.

She sustained 1st, 2nd, and 3rd degree burns over 25% of her body from an electrical high voltage accident at their home in Evansville, WI. Fulton’s designated water line piping is now completed. Stretching along Thirteenth Ave. from the well east to Ninth St. and up to the water tower took a supreme effort by both the contractors and city employees to com-

plete the job during the hot weather the past several weeks.

Early Step Preschool received a grant for $120,000. Accepting the grant were River Bend Superintendent Chuck Holliday, Early Step Preschool teacher Carol Wilkens and District Office secretary Virginia Petersen.

Mrs. Wilkens stated this was the first time since grant funding first began over 20 years ago that each Illinois State funded preschool had to write and apply for a brand new state grant to guarantee preschool funding to keep district preschools operating.

Common causes of cirrhosis of the liver is discussed

BY DR. STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Cirrhosis is a disease of the liver in which liver cells are destroyed. The most common cause is due to alcohol, though there may be other causes involved. In fact, several different types of hepatitis has become a growing cause of cirrhosis. In any event, the function of the liver is often severely damaged. The liver itself may be of normal size or larger in certain phases before shrinking.

When cirrhosis is advanced, this may lead to the appearance of jaun-

dice, abdominal swelling, or bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, stomach, etc.

In early stages cirrhosis is often treatable to some degree. It is imperative that alcoholic beverages be avoided. However, plenty of fluids are encouraged. One should also watch salt and sodium in the diet, though one does not need to go to the extremes.

Occasionally your doctor may restrict protein, but often a regular balanced diet is sufficient.

Erie man charged with 7 counts of sexually assaulting a child A 58-year-old Erie man is charged in Whiteside County court with sexually assaulting a child younger than 13 multiple times between October 2014 and July 2016.

David D. Skinner, 58, is charged with seven counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child younger

than 13, which carries a sentence of 6 to 60 years in prison and requires registration as a sex offender.

According to court records, the girl was 12 when the first assault occurred.

Skinner, who was arrested Friday after an investigation by Erie police, was released Monday after posting $25,000 of his $250,000 bond.

He has a hearing Aug. 23.

The speed that Morrison teams have been able to show off and rely on in recent years is still there, and Snider is excited to be able to tap into it.

“I think we’re really going to run the ball well,” Snider said. “We’ve got a backfield with a lot of track guys and some wrestling guys that are tough, physical runners, and fast too. You look at Alex Anderson, Justice Brainerd, they’re two of our backfield guys and they were both on the 4x400 relay that took fourth in the state in June.

Tommy Dauphin, he’s another track guy, a 200 and 100 runner. Kayden White and Logan Baker are both wrestlers.”

Snider comes to Morrison from Orangeville, where he joined the staff as an assistant coach in 2013, then took over as head coach for the spring season in 2021, going 2-4.

He was able to install most of the offense during summer work with the Mustangs.

“The playbook is different and we’re learning it,” Anderson said. “I think we’re picking up on it pretty quick.”

With so much speed on the field, Snider said he will be able to rotate players a lot more, keeping fresh legs on the field and allowing each player to make plays where they can excel.

While much of the speed is back, the Mustangs do have a new quarterback, as Danny Mouw takes over after Nathan Helms graduated.

“You look at him and you don’t think Brett Favre, you don’t think Aaron Rodgers,” Snider said. “He’s not a tall guy or anything like that, but he might be the most respected guy in the locker room.”

With Mouw taking a leadership role on offense, Anderson and Baker have that role on defense as the Mustangs’ free safety and strong safety, respectively.

“The safeties in our defense make all the calls, do everything in the huddle,” Snider said. “They walked out there from Day 1 and they listen and they learn and they do everything right, and that gets the attention of their teammates.”

Defense was one of the keys to the Mustangs’ resurgence a few years ago.

When Morrison reached the quarterfinals in 2019, the Mustangs allowed a total of 81 points in 12 games, shutting out Fulton, Bureau Valley and Erie-Prophetstown in the span of four weeks and holding six other teams under 10 points. In the spring season, Morrison opened the campaign with a shutout win over Riverdale and held Newman to 14 points a couple of weeks later, but also allowed 34 points in a loss to Rockridge and 56 in a loss to Fulton.

Anderson said a big key on defense is the size up front.

“It’s a lot of big guys,” defensive lineman Tyler Shambaugh said. “A lot of guys have been playing since sophomore year, a few since freshman year, so it should be pretty good.”

On defense, Snider brings in a philosophy of using non-contact tackling drills in practice, saving the hits for Friday nights while keeping players fresh later in the year.

“There’s always doubters that say you can’t do it that way, there’s always the old-school coaches that [think] you have to beat on guys day after day,” Snider said. “Especially at a small school – I came from an even smaller school [Orangeville] – we don’t want to get beat down. We’re going to work on our form every single day, but we’re not going to beat on each other.”

Fulton brings experience heading into first NUIC season

eingles@shawmedia.com The new guys in the NUIC are bringing with them a lot of experience on the offensive line, with plenty of three-year starters sprinkled throughout what last year proved to be a tough defense.

Fulton’s defense allowed a total of 26 points in its first four games of the spring – all wins, including a shutout of rival Morrison in what could be the last Wooden Shoe game for a while.

That defensive dominance came to an end in a season-ending loss to Princeton, but the Steamers feel there is a lot to build on defensively in the NUIC. “We’re a fast team this year,” senior defensive back Brock Mason said. “I think we’re going to be fast to get to the ball, flying around the field making tackles.”

Mason is one of a trio of three-year starters on defense, along with linebacker Keegan Vankampen and defensive lineman Kole Schipper “Those are the guys we’re looking for in leadership, but you’ve also got other guys that played last year,” Steamers coach Patrick Lower said.

“We’re going to just keep building off what we did last year.”

Mason takes on more of the load offensively at wide receiver this year, as well as taking on more responsibility on defense. His coach is looking to see more consistency from Mason this year in hopes he will be ready for everything the team is throwing at him.

But even with the newcomers and the players who made the varsity debut in the spring, the learning curve is not as steep.

“A lot of our sophomores-turned-juniors have been around the program long enough to understand what we’re doing,” Lower said. “After only being gone two-and-a-half, three months from last year, there’s a lot more memory than what we thought there would be.”

On the offensive line, the Steamers have to replace the entire right side of the line after the graduations of Nate Portz and Josh Huizenga, but bring back the other three starters in Schipper, Joey Huizenga and Zach Dykstra.

To fill the right tackle and right guard roles, three players are in a fight for two starting spots.

“The competition there is good,” Lower said. “We’re going to do what we do and expect them to handle it.”

At quarterback, Lower didn’t have to look far to find a replacement for the now-graduated Connor Barnett, handing the ball to his son, Patrick.

“I think a lot of what Connor did last year was he taught me more about the mental game, knowing what’s coming in pass coverages, what the defense is going to be in,” he said. “I learned a lot from him last year, and I hope to use that and make myself even better this year.”

The senior quarterback sees a lot of versatility with Fulton’s offense, with Mason looming on the edge as a receiving target and plenty of options in the running game.

“We can run the ball inside and outside. We can throw shallow. We can throw deep,” he said. “I think I’m just excited to get going.”

Fulton is in its first year in the NUIC, with an unfamiliar Week 1 opponent in Galena looming at the end of the month.

“I think that our coaches are doing a good job getting us to where we need to be on the field, getting us to know what we need to do, so I don’t think we need to worry too much because our coaches will get us prepared no matter who it is,” Mason said.

The Newman boys golf team opened the 2021 season with a triangular win against Rock Falls and Morrison on Thursday afternoon at Rock River Golf and Pool.

Kyle Wolfe was medalist for the Comets, who shot a 157. Ty Brockman added a 39, while Logan Palmer fired a 40 and Grant Koerner had a 41. Jacob Donald (42) and Carson Palmer (44) also played for Newman.

FAIR TIME

Whiteside County Fair daytime entertainment The Whiteside County Fair has an amazing line up of daily events at this year’s fair and it is sure to please all who attend! The fair starts on Tuesday, August 17th and completes after five fun filled days on Saturday, Aug. 21. The 150th annual fair, held at the fairgrounds in Morrison, has something for everyone that you won’t want to miss!

Here are some of the many things going on during the day.

Cake and Pie Walk Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 4 pm.

Chicken Poo Bingo at 3 pm. Tuesday through Friday.

Grampa Cratchet Stage Show throughout the day.

All Star Animal Revue with Pig Races daily, Bike Give Away sign up at the blue building during each day and with drawings Tuesday through Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Wood Carving every day of the fair with the auction Saturday at 4 p.m.

Livestock Judged Tuesday

through Friday. Check the website schedule for specific times.

Bingo nightly 6 to 9 p.m.

Fire Department display from 2 to 6 p.m.

Friday – Morrison Fire – grain bin rescue.

Saturday – Kid’s water fights.

Rapids City to seek engineering firm for 17th St. project

Rapids City board members expressed concerns about the lack of communication with the village’s current engineering firm during their meeting on Tuesday, August 10.

Trustees have been frustrated with MSA Professional Services and “communication issues” around the village’s planned infrastructure projects. They’d hoped the 13th St. culvert project would be completed this year, but bidding may not start until November. The contract for the water loop project was signed earlier that day but the start date has not been solidified. The village will alert

affected residences when that start date is set.

The board agreed to seek out another engineering firm to evaluate, design, and oversee repairs to the 17th St. hill project, which consists of erosion control, water control, and suggested repairs. The board agreed that there should be a competitive process for all village projects moving forward, with MSA able to compete in that process.

Village President Harold Mire Jr. told the board that the village had received $1.5 million in three separate bonds, with $400,000 for the water loop project, $300,000 for the 13th St. culvert, and $800,000 for the 17th St. project, plus funds for other capital

improvement projects. The bonds can be paid off after five years without pre-payment penalties.

Mire added that the village’s portion of the project funding was made possible by the change of law enforcement and contract savings, and the village’s first-ever dedicated sales tax.

No property tax increases are expected for the projects, which will be beneficial for the whole community, he added.

Mire next thanked board members and village personnel for hosting the recent Bass Federation and Junior World Championships at Shuler’s Shady Grove Park. “It was an excellent event and I want to thank the Bass Federation, Rock Island County

Sheriff’s Office, Illinois DNR, Visit Quad Cities, plus the board of trustees for getting the boat ramp fixed up.

Trustee Rick Fiems did an exemplary job as a liaison between the village and the TBF. It was a roaring success,” he said of the event that brought youth anglers from across the United States.

The board also approved a $200 sponsorship to the local Raging Rapids softball team at the request of Colby DeBlaey, with Mire thanking all the parents for their dedication to their kids and their sports ambitions.

They also learned that village billing clerk Kelly Becht will remain on staff part-time, though she took another part-time clerk job with Port Byron.

Erie Middle School ancestor stories continue

As one of the final projects of the school year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else they could research and learn more about in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members.

While there were many great stories written, not all will be published in the newspaper.

Can you think of yourself holding mouse funerals under a weeping willow tree? Well, my paternal grandmother, Verna Elizabeth Ballard did.

Verna was born on October 12, 1957.

As a kid and teen Verna did a lot of moving from city to city. My grandma is a very inspirational and independent woman.

Verna’s first marriage was at the age of 15. She had her first child on December 31, 1973 and named him John. She then divorced John’s father and later met her now husband, Jim, and after getting married they had the twins Jimmy and Jerry on January 25, 1978. The twins were big pranksters and once put a snake in the mailbox. On September 24, 1985 Verna had my father and six months later she moved into her forever home. In March of 1997 she and her husband Jim went to bike week in Florida. Verna had a pig for 10 years called Charlotte. Just like the movie

Charlotte’s Web. Verna’s childhood was a little boring for her. She didn’t have a lot of friends because she moved all the time, so she didn’t have friends to spend time with. Verna had two sisters, Thelma and Cindy. She moved a lot from town to city to out to the country; some of the city’s she moved to are Milan, Andover, East Moline, Prophetstown, and Spring Hill. She loved to go play in the timber at her house and she would bring lunch out with her and have lunch out in the timber. There was a time when she went to school that all 12 grades were in the same building. Verna had a great friend called Libby where they would try to look the same. It always worked out for them somehow.

Verna has four kids and out of the four she has seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her youngest grandchild is 13 years old and her name is Victoria, then, Verna has a 17 year old grandchild and he loves football, wrestling and he loves building trucks with his grandpa.

My grandma is someone my family can’t live without. She always helped the grandkids and would always involve them. She has always loved camping and she brings the whole family with her. She loves her grandkids a lot and when she goes camping she always brings stuff for the kids to play with. As you can see Grandma Ballard is an amazing woman and the glue that holds the family together.

Sunday, Aug. 29 will be a very special day as the congregations of Ebenezer and Emmanuel churches will join together for worship followed by a potluck. The combined service will be held at Ebenezer at 9:30 a.m. with Pastors Luke and J. T. joining forces to present the message. A combined praise team and combined choir will provide music and the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated. Mark your calendars for this very special morning.
