Spangler’s Landscaping marks milestone in business with 50 years of growing

Like every other day in business, the thousands of plants needed watering during the 4 th of July weekend at Spangler’s Landscape and Garden Center in Morrison. Though a social gathering would’ve been fun, there was a business to tend to, so the Spanglers did just that.

From annuals and perennials, fruit trees and vegetables, shrubs, vines, mulch, rock, and garden décor, the five acres of land on the outskirts of Morrison’s city limits has evolved through 50 years of business, all while bringing beauty to untold yards and homes.

Lanny and Linda Spangler first opened the business in April 1971. He was working at National Tea grocery store, now Sullivan’s, and asked his boss if he’d mind him working part-time on a garden business.

The Morrison couple soon found and eventually purchased the property at 12540 Lincoln Highway.

Back then there was a circle driveway, a bantam hen, and an inventory of evergreens - no rock, mulch, or other gardening staples, with perennials being unheard of at that time. It was the “school of hard knocks,” they said of getting the business off the ground.

As time went on, they incorporated the latest trends in landscape and built out the garden center next to their home. Linda, now 73, provided the primary care for the couple’s three children, plus the housework and managing the business.

Lanny, now 78, had the garden duties, with upkeep of the plants and landscape design and installation. Social time was spent at the kids’ ball games and going to Wiebenga’s drive-in for hamburgers.

Now with 50 years gone by, times have changed but memories remain. In the first decade, before the advent of cell phones, Lanny found himself helping many travelers who ran out of gas while on U.S. Route 30. Many big city folks would stop by the business, intrigued by the 100+ year old barn. A phone box was installed in the middle of the garden center to field the ever-increasing calls.

Early on, the Spanglers converted the bottom floor of the old farmer’s barn into a garden store, after extensive clean-up from the former calf occupants. It’s stocked with garden supplies, seeds, gnomes, terrariums, gazing balls, Isabel Blooms, bird baths, and the register. Displays of vibrantly colored blooms and healthy trees fill the grounds, while sprinklers nourish, and butterflies and bees pollinate.

The Spanglers source most of their inventory from nurseries in Oregon, Washington, Michigan, and Minnesota. All are

winter hardy plants, and all come with a one-year guarantee under certain conditions.

“Despite being designated Zone 5, we’re really a Zone 4,” said Linda of their selection. Freight has gone up considerably this past year, they noted, but 2021 has been one of their best years yet.

The business has been an “all-consuming” venture for five decades, with landscape design, hardscape installation, retail sales, and ensuring the plants stay alive and healthy in all Midwestern weather conditions.

Nowadays, both are feeling the effects of age, with sore backs and a slower pace.

She’s still a night owl, often working until midnight, and he’s in bed early so he can be up and at it by 4 a.m. He often takes a small nap after lunch to power him through the afternoon.

With a dedicated crew of employees, the labor is shared and the fruits are many.

Kendra Kirk of Morrison, an employee for the past nine years, said the best part of the job is “being around all the plants,” where

it’s hard to be in a bad mood. She helps with plant care and says the business brings in familiar faces each day.

Linda and Lanny have three children Jim, the youngest, works on the Spangler’s landscape crew and has his own lawn care business, David lives in Sterling and works for Agri-King, and Lauri lives in Long Grove.

There are seven grandchildren between the ages of 6-34, and one great-granddaughter. Two friendly cats – Howard and Fern – wander around the garden center, and another cat and dog reside in the house.

At the end of the growing season, the remaining plants are moved to a greenhouse in the winter, bringing more days of hard work. But the secret to success has been a sense of humor and love and devotion to their chosen profession.

Mr. and Mrs. Mark Pruis of Morrison will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at Emmanuel Reformed Church Christ Center, Morrison , on Saturday, July 17, from 2 to 4. No gifts please.

Mark Pruis and Connie Carpenter were married July 10, 1971 at Emmanuel Reformed Church. They are the parents of three sons, Greg (Tammy) Pruis, Scott Pruis and Cory (Nikki) Pruis. They are blessed with seven grandchildren.

Mark retired from General Electric after 31 years as a tool and die maker and most recently eight years at Climco Coils. Connie worked at the American Legion, Workman PHC and Resthave Home. They enjoy spending time with family and attending their grandchildren’s activities and sports.

MORRISON - Maria L. Huizenga, 74, of Morrison, died Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. The Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home handled arrangements.

SHARON JANE HABBEN

MORRISON - Sharon Jane Habben, 79, of Morrison, died Sunday, June 27, 2021 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Sharon was born Jan. 25, 1942, in Morrison, to Clayton and Thelma (Renkes) Dykema.

She graduated from Morrison High School in 1960 and in 1964 she graduated from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

On Aug. 7, 1964 she married Duane “Barney” Habben in Morrison.

For several years Sharon taught in elementary schools throughout the Whiteside County area. She was proud of her work with the Gifted Program in the Morrison Elementary Schools.

Sharon loved cooking and catering. She began the Sugar and Spice Shoppe, originally operating on Main Street in Morrison, and later in her home. She enjoyed this venture for over 20 years.

She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, and served on many committees. Sharon also organized and started the Morrison Farmers Market.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed writing articles for local newspapers. Sharon also supported Barney’s interest in auctioneering, writing many of his sale bills.

Survivors include her husband, Duane; two sons, Christopher (Amy) Habben of Shawnee, Kansas and Corey Habben of Silver Springs, Maryland; two grandchildren, Maggie Habben and Clayton Habben; two sisters, Marla Irion of Dubuque, Iowa and Ann Bush of Davenport, Iowa; one sister-inlaw, Nancy (Everett) Pannier of Morrison; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers-in-law, Steven Bush and Ken Irion.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service was held July 2 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison.

Interment was at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

JANICE ANN OLSON

BLOOMINGTON, MN - Janice Ann Olson (Maiden: Irion, Married: Stevenson) passed peacefully on June 28, 2021 at Martin Luther Senior Care Center in Bloomington, Minnesota after a brief time of illness Janice was 88 years young. Originally from Morrison, Janice had been living in Lake Havasu, Arizona for the last 13 years before moving to Cannon Falls, Minnesota to live with family during the pandemic.

Wherever Janice planted roots, she was quick to make friends with her love of music, dancing, exercise, playing cards/games, and get-togethers that always included delicious baked goods.

Janice’s legendary pies and lemon bars will forever have a sweet spot in the hearts of her family and friends.

Janice was a wife, partner, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend!

She will be lovingly remembered by her sibling, Ron (Shirley) Irion; her daughters, Jane (Tom) Beckett and Nancy (Dave) Seddon; her stepson, Harvey “Ole” (Paula) Olson; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Brenton) Correll, Anna (Phill) Coble, Stephen (Teresa) Seddon, Jacqueline (Andy) Valek; and her great-grandchildren, Sam, Emma, Lennon, Everette, and Kennedy, as well as the fur friends she loved and adored: Amani, Cooper, Lucy, Bacardi, Lulu, and Lola.

Janice was predeceased by her husband, Dwight “Steve” Stevenson; husband, Floyd Olson; and partner, Jerald “Jerry” Balcom.

Janice is remembered for her incredible strength, resiliency, positive attitude, hard work ethic, and love for life!

Janice demonstrated to her family how to live simply and save for a rainy day, how to find joy in everyday tasks like painting, how to appreciate food (even fast-food!), how to love animals, how to cheer up with retail therapy (shopping), how to dress up and get ready even if you don’t have anywhere to go, how to find humor through family games like junk bingo, how to give back to the community by making handmade quilts for those in need, and how to live a life, without complaints, in a way that is full of meaning and gives glory to God. We honor Janice for modeling true strength when things get tough. Janice was an example of a true friend, a caring mother, and a loyal partner.

Janice will be dearly missed by her family and friends in Illinois, Arizona, and Minnesota.

Janice was a member of First Baptist Church in Lake Havasu, Arizona and Brethren in Christ Church in Morrison. No formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers,

please buy your family ice cream in memory of Janice, it is what Janice would want you to do.

PHYLLIS J. ACHTERHOF WIERSEMA

CRYSTAL RIVER, FL - Phyllis J. Wiersema, 96, passed away peacefully in Crystal River, Florida on June 21, 2021, surrounded by her children.

She was the sixth child born to Jacob Achterhof and Harriet Ostema Achterhof of Morrison, on Feb/ 15, 1925.

Phyllis graduated from Morrison High School. On Oct. 17, 1944, she married John R. Wiersema, also of Morrison.

The young couple farmed southeast of Morrison for 24 years and raised six children before moving into town.

John worked for General Electric for over 24 years, while Phyllis worked for 17 years as a writer and editor for the Sterling (Illinois) Gazette. The couple retired to Port Charlotte, Florida in 1986, where Phyllis researched family genealogy research, writing a book titled Generations for both the Achterhof and Wiersema families, dating to the 1600s in Holland.

They enjoyed retirement life for 10 happy years, often travelling to see their children around the country.

After John’s death in 1997, Phyllis continued to live in Port Charlotte until 2004, when Hurricane Charlie ruined her home. She then moved to Crystal River, Florida near her daughter, Judy Morgan and son Don Wiersema.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Crystal River.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband John of 53 years; her sons-in-law, Anthony Scalise and John Pickelman; sisters, Janet Lartz of Savanna, and Eloise Salminen of St. Paul, Minnesota ;and brothers Raymond Achterhof of Geneseo, and Marvin Achterhof of Brown Deer, Wisconsin.

Survivors include her children, Judith Morgan (Jason) of Lecanto, Florida, Barbara Pickelman of Frisco, Texas, Alan Wiersema (Judith) of Charlestown, Rhode Island, Donald Wiersema (Kathy) of Lecanto, Florida, Gayle Scalise of Newington, Connecticut, and Jean Dolan (Michael), Westlake Village, California and by her brother Bernard Achterhof, 98 of Geneseo.

She also leaves seven grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, seven great grandchildren plus one on the way and four

step-great-grandchildren, along with extended family around the country.

HARVEY WIEBENGA

FULTON - Harvey Wiebenga, 81, of Fulton, died Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

Harvey was born Aug. 28, 1939, in Fulton to Richard “Dick”and Winnie (Balk) Wiebenga.

He was educated in the Excelsior Christian Grade School in Fulton and was a 1957 graduate of Fulton High School.

He later graduated from DMACC - Des Moines Area Community College in Des Moines, Iowa. He married Joan Meurs and they were later divorced. He then married F. Darlene Martin on May 17, 2003 in Fulton. She died Feb. 9, 2007.

Harvey started as a milk delivery man for Elmwood Dairy and was later employed as an Electrolux salesman for many years. He was also a nursing home administrator in Rock Falls.

He was a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church and Second Reformed Church in Fulton and was s a current member of Community Reformed Church, in Clinton, Iowa.

Harvey enjoyed playing cards with his friends and could play any card game you could think of. He was also an avid reader.

Survivors include two sons, Dalbert (Bette) Wiebenga of Morrison, and Dean (Jennifer) Wiebenga of West Dundee; five grandchildren, Steven (Sarah) Wiebenga and Kevin Wiebenga, Gwyneth, Nolan and Gage Wiebenga; many stepgrandchildren, including Joshua and Maggie Wiik; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Martin-Wiebenga; one daughter, Darla Wiebenga; three sisters, Sylvia Vegter, Rena Wiebenga and Anna Mae Mitchell; and three brothers, George and Clarence Wiebenga and one in infancy.

His funeral service was held at July 6 at the Fulton chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Stephan, pastor of CrossView Church in Fulton officiating.

Interment was at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton.

FAIRFAX, Virginia - On June 30, 2021, Capt. Paul E. Ellison, USN (Ret), of Fairfax, Virginia passed away with his immediate family by his side. He was 86 years old.

Paul Ellison was born in Peoria on Jan. 4, 1935, the son of Reverend James B. and Mrs. Mildred Ellison. He was the fourth of eight children and raised in Erie.

After graduating from Erie Community High School in 1953, he attended Western Illinois University in Macomb. He volunteered for Selective Service duty and entered the U.S. Navy in March 1956.

In October 1957, he entered Flight Training at Pensacola, Florida in the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) program. He completed the program and earned his Naval Aviation “Wings of Gold” in May 1959 and was commissioned into the U.S. Navy.

Following his first tour with Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 39 (VS-39) at Quonset Point, RI, he served in a variety of

assignments including Flight Instructor, US Naval Mission to Ecuador, Fleet Tactical Support Squadron 40, US Military Assistance Command in Saigon, Vietnam, and Carrier Early Warning Training Squadron 120.

Capt. Ellison attended the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California and received a Bachelor’s degree in 1973.

He was subsequently assigned to Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 122, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Wing 12, and Commanding Officer of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 121 (VAW-121).

Capt. Ellison’s post-command tours were as Navigator, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42), Student at Naval War College (receiving a Master’s degree), Tactical Action Officer at Carrier Group 4, Branch Chief on The Joint Staff, and President of the Central Physical Evaluation Board, Naval Council of Personnel Boards.

Capt. Ellison retired on June 30, 1989, with 33 years of active Naval service. He accumulated over 5,700 flight hours in various training and operational aircraft and made over 460 carrier arrested landings on 16 different aircraft carriers.

His personal awards included the

Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation and various Unit, Service and Campaign medals.

After his Navy career, he enjoyed flying for American Eagle, as well as playing tennis, racquetball, golf and softball. He also umpired girls fast pitch softball for several years.

Paul “Papa” Ellison always loved to spend time with his nine grandchildren (Pete, Mike, Bridget, Diane, Owen, Parker, Cooper, Beckett, and Emery). He loved going to the beach or the lake with his family and valued his time spent being silly with his grandchildren who adored him.

Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Ellison; their three children, Tom Ellison (Trish Hart), Paula “Sugie” Ellison Severs (Paul), and Jerry Ellison (Martha); nine grandchildren; and three siblings: Floyd Ellison, Lorretta Dearing and Mary Francis.

A memorial service will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, with a reception to follow at the Pan Am Restaurant in Fairfax.

Paul will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date TBD.

The Fulton Council approved street closures for “Totally Tuesday in the Park” events on July 20 and Aug. 10, as well as the Fulton Fall Festival on Oct. 2.

On July 20 and Aug. 10, 11th Ave. will be closed between 9th and 10th Streets from 5 – 8 p.m. to accommodate food trucks near 10th Avenue School Park. For the July 20 event, Kelley Girls Woodfire Pizza, Glazey Daze Donuts, and Holly’s Hot Dogs food trucks will be set up, with live music provided

by The Stockwells. The community is invited to the free and family-friendly event.

Fulton Fall Festival will have a fitness competition on Saturday, Oct. 2, with the council approving road closures to accommodate activities on 4th St. and the downtown district. Organizers are planning a race throughout Fulton, with the full course route still in discussion. Planning is ongoing, with more details to be announced at upcoming meetings.

In Police Chief Nicholas Neblung’s report, officers responded to 462 calls for service in May 2021, for a yearly total of 2,031 calls.

2011: Tragic accident takes place at de Immigrant Windmill 60 Years

July 5, 1961

Substantial increases in growth and strength were reported for the 65th operating year of the Fidelity Life Association at the company’s annual meeting at the home offices in Fulton. The company’s operations showed that 1960 was the sixth consecutive record year of growth.

Charles Grimshaw of Fulton received his 25-year service pin from G. K. Stebbins, manager of engineering at the Morrison plant of General Electric.

It takes just one man to operate every major operation of the now completed Agri-Industries complex located on the river bank in the south part of Fulton. Since the first load of grain by the firm in August of last year, a total of 28,000,000 bushels have been unloaded from truck and rail, transferred to river barges and sent on down to the gulf.

The Motor Vehicle Tax, has been a thorn in the side of city officials and many car owners since it first was placed some 30 years ago. Funds were

to be used only for street work. Public Works Director Tom Kamm suggested to the council the city consider abolishing the wheel tax and substituting an increase in water and sewer rates.

Local organizations and government units have started a project to light the length of the walking/bike path on Fulton’s riverfront. If all can be worked out the dike will be lit yet this year.

Betty Edwards made a hole-in-one on hole No. 3. She was using a No. 7 wood and a Top Flight ball. This was her first after many years of golfing.

Fulton’s new Presbyterian Church, being constructed with a variety of technicians trying to complete the structure, received another enhancement with the arrival of the 24 foot tall steeple.

Andy (17) and Ben (15) Heun will be demonstrating willow furniture making near the windmill. Willow furniture making in Fulton was a popular craft in the 1930’s. Andy’s grandmother, Donna Haan, showed him a picture of willow crafts and it sparked an interest in him to give it a try.

Tragedy fell at de Immigrant Windmill. Ron Venema had a tragic accident while volunteering at the windmill. He was in the process of shutting down the windmill when he fell a distance inside the mill. He was airlifted to Peoria where he later died of head injuries.

Beginning in late August, Fulton and Thomson mail carriers will begin operating out of the Clinton Post Office.

The U. S. Postal Service is in a severe financial crisis. There will be a transportation savings by having the carriers operate out of Clinton, IA.

Food allergies are less common than usually thought

Almost everyone has eaten something that has disagreed with them and then declared themselves allergic to that substance. True food allergies, however, are much less common than usually thought.

In adults, food allergies are rare.

Infants may have some type of adverse reaction to cow’s milk during the first year of life. This tolerance, which is often not a true food allergy, can consist of a rash, loose stools, colic, and respiratory symptoms. For some reason most of the infant’s food allergies disappear as an individual grows older.

Food allergies usually manifest themselves like other allergies with rash, hives, or respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing, cough, or difficulty breathing. Common foods that tend to cause allergies include milk, shellfish, nuts, wheat, eggs, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, strawberries and citrus fruits. In some cases it may be the chemicals, such as preservatives added to the foods, which are the true allergen. Stomachaches are much less common than hives, skin rashes,

or even respiratory difficulties. Some people with eczema have their condition aggravated by a food allergy.

Some food allergies can be life-threatening. When the symptoms are limited to stomachache, this suggests more of a food intolerance than a true allergy. If abdominal symptoms are the only symptom, other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome may be the culprit.

To discover a true food allergy, the physician will begin the examination with a thorough history. The next step involves diet trials in which the suspected foods are eliminated and then reinstated to the diet to see how the patient reacts. A true food allergy can often be detected by a skin test, though often the diagnosis is made before this time. With simple food intolerances the skin test is not helpful as opposed to the true food allergy.

Blood tests may help in some instances to determine allergies.

Desensitization for food allergies by shots is not an effective method of treatment. The only way to effectively control food allergies is to discover the cause and avoid the food.

The cause of the fire has not been determined but is not suspicious, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Johnson said, adding that the building is sal-

He did not know how many people were displaced, but said all four units sustained either fire, smoke or water damage. No one was injured.

It took about 4 hours to clear the scene, and the Red Cross was called in to help the families, Johnson said.

Council approves water system improvements

The Morrison City Council approved an engineering agreement with Willett, Hofmann & Associates for phase 2 of the water systems improvement project at their council meeting on June 28.

The project includes replacing 1,290 customer water meters, furnishing and installing 1,741 radio read units on customer water meters, installing a radio read base station, and setting up meter reading through a Regional Network Interface and Billing software system.

The project also includes the Wall Street and US Route 30 water main looping project if the easements can be obtained.

The customer water meter replacement cost estimate is $1,066,000, and the water main loop is $344,500, for a total project cost of $1,410,500. The project funding includes an IEPA principal forgiveness loan in the amount of $400,000 and an IEPA loan of $1,010,500.

The annual loan payment will be $39,155 for thirty years at 1.0% interest.

Bids for the project will be advertised in October 2021, with construction to start in April 2022. The water main will be completed by August 2022 and the water meters by October 2022.

The council also approved a $120,514.50 bid by Helm Civil for Ash and Jackson St. paving, which was below the engineers’ previous estimates. The construction contracts need to be approved by IDOT before the project can start.

The council also reviewed a proposal for a 16,200 sq. ft. public works building at a cost of $2,181,270. The building could house the city’s public works equipment, with a tentative location near the sewage treatment plant on the far south side of Morrison.

Despite a lively discussion, the council postponed any action on the proposal, suggesting further meetings with the engineering firm.

The council also approved a request
