Odell Library Friends campaign to Fund the Floor

December 1 kicks off the Odell Public Library Friends’ ambitious campaign, Fund the Floor, to replace the flooring in the library. The original carpeting, laid 26 years ago, is showing its age and wrinkling in certain areas has become a tripping hazard. Commercial carpet tiles will be utilized in much of the building with hard flooring in portions of the children’s and young adult areas. These flooring updates will beautify your public library and create durable and easy to clean spaces.

The estimate for this project is substantial - $80,000 for over 8,300 sq. ft. of flooring. This figure includes purchasing materials, removing old flooring, prepar-

ing the floor, installing new flooring, and moving books and shelving. The Odell Public Library Friends are generously donating $5,000 to jump-start the project, reducing the goal to $75,000. In addition, an anonymous donor has graciously offered a $10,000 matching grant, so we are well on our way.

In the spirit of this season of giving, we hope that many individuals and businesses will give back to the community of Morrison by helping us improve the function, space and appearance of the library.

We welcome all contributions and donors’ names will be added to a temporary bookthemed display in the library.

MORRISON – After a fiveyear absence from the bench, former Whiteside County Circuit Court Judge John L. Hauptman is coming out of retirement to take a position with the Third District Appellate Court.

Hauptman, who retired Dec. 4, 2016, from the 14th Judicial Circuit Court, will fill the seat held by Justice Vicki R. Wright, also a Whiteside County Court alumnus. Wright is retiring Nov. 30.

Hauptman’s appointment is effective Dec. 1 through Dec. 4, 2022, following the November 2022 general election, state Supreme Court Justice Robert L. Carter said in a news release Nov. 23.

Hauptman was appointed associate judge in Whiteside County in 1997 and held that

position for seven years.

Before that, he worked in private practice, and before that was a Whiteside County assistant state’s attorney for six years after graduating in 1978 from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Wright, a Sandwich native, started her law career as an appellate prosecutor for the Third District Appellate Court

in 1982 after graduating from Loyola University School of Law in Chicago.

She became an assistant state’s attorney in Whiteside County in 1984 and was appointed the first female associate circuit judge for the 14th Judicial Circuit in 1991.

She became the first person from Whiteside County elected to the Third District Appellate Court in 2006.

The Third District covers 21 counties: Whiteside, Bureau, Fulton, Grundy, Hancock, Henderson, Henry, Iroquois, Kankakee, Knox, La Salle, Marshall, McDonough, Mercer, Peoria, Putnam, Rock island, Stark, Tazewell, Warren and Will. Morrison man accused of killing puppy Mount Carroll police ID

MORRISON – A Morrison man has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after a 4-month-old puppy was found dead of a head injury in his home.

The investigation continues, and Donald C. Golden, 30, of Morrison and formerly of Prophetstown, may be charged with a felony, police Chief Brian Melton said Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Golden faces up to a year in jail.

A necropsy showed the small dog died from “compression and displacement of the brain by subdural hemorrhage, caused by blunt force trauma to the head,” Melton said.

Whiteside County Animal Control and the University of Illinois, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, College of Veterinary Medicine are assisting in the investigation.

MOUNT CARROLL – Police have learned whose body was found Monday, Nov. 22, in a wooded area, but are withholding public identification or further details until his family is notified, Mount Carroll police Officer Courtney

Grinnall said in an email.

An autopsy was to have been conducted Wednesday, Nov. 24, not only to aid in cause of death but also to help with the identification, police said in a news release Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The body was found about 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of state Route 78 and U.S. Route 52.

NEWS BRIEFS Morrison Christmas Walk planned for Saturday

The Morrison Chamber of Commerce’s annual Christmas Walk will return to the downtown from 3 to 8 p.m.

Saturday, Dec. 4.

Because of construction in the downtown, the order of events and times have been adjusted this year.

The Live Window Walk will begin at 3 p.m. The parade will start at 4:30 p.m., followed by the Christmas Tree Lighting.

The theme this year is “Comfort and Joy,” with organizers saying it’s a “celebration of the Comfort of hosting the

Christmas Walk that we all know and love and the Joy of being able to celebrate it on our new Main Street.”

Barn will return to the Antique Engine and Tractor Association’s showgrounds from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4. The fundraiser will feature a soup supper with chili, potato soup, vegetables, desserts and hot chocolate on the menu.

Take a train ride around the decorated showgrounds and a ride on a horse-drawn wagon, weather permitting. Santa will be stopping by at 5 p.m.

Born: August 12, 1940 in Moline, IL Died: October 17, 2021 in Columbia, MO Robert James “Bob” Jaecques, 81, of Cairo, MO, passed away October 17, 2021 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, MO. Bob was born August 12, 1940, in Moline IL to Everett and Emma (La Peere) Jaecques.

He graduated from Erie, IL High School in 1958. He was a welder for Roy E. Roth Factory right out of high school. In 1962, he moved to Missouri and worked at Apco Service Station in Salisbury, MO. In 1966, he started working at Braymer Implement Co. in Moberly, MO. A couple years later, Bob and partner, Bill Hughes, bought Braymer Implement Co. and re-named it B&B Equipment Company. He was a salesman and then service manager at Moberly Motor Co. and service manager at A.B. Kelly Motors. In 1992, he built a shop at home and opened Jaecques Repair Shop, where he could fix just about anything.

He worked there until the week before his passing.

Francis was born March 4, 1928, in Fenton, IL, to William & Gertrude (Borgman) Venhuizen. He was educated in the rural Stone Street School outside of Fenton, IL. Francis joined the US Army during the Korean War in November 1951, and he was awarded the Bronze Star. He first married, Nola M. Hoogheem on August 11, 1950, in Fulton.

She died on September 19, 1990. He later married Thelma P. Zaagman on December 2, 2000, in Morrison, IL. She died on August 10, 2015. Francis was a carpenter for over 20 years then later retired from Dupont in Clinton, IA. After retirement, Francis worked for many years assisting the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home team. He was a member of American Legion and was a member of Second Reformed Church in Fulton for 76 years. He had been a member there since he was 17 years old and served as deacon for many years. Francis was also a member of Bob married Carol Tiffany on July 31, 1960, in Erie IL and she survives of the home. Also surviving are his daughters, Melia Cate and husband Steve, Teresa McCollum and husband Kerry; four grandchildren, Elise Cate, Amanda Koehn, Alex McCollum and Lucas McCollum; sister Arlene Hudson, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister-in-laws, Richard and Margaret Jaecques, Eugene and Hazel Jaecques, brother-in-law Duane Hudson, and son-in-law Richie Vallandingham.

Bob will be remembered for many things.

The most important thing will be his love for his family. He had a great smile and laugh and loved to tell a good story. He was a friend to everyone he met and would help anyone in need. Bob and Carol lived on their farm in Cairo for 48 years where they raised crops and cattle. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A few of his favorite trips were to Alaska, Switzerland, and Holland. He was an accomplished woodworker and was able to make anything!

Icelandic horse, a shorter but stronger breed, wild reindeer after someone let the gate open, plus puffins, seals, and the humpback whales, with the northern coast being their feeding grounds for three months out of the year.

The country mostly runs on geothermal energy, though there is one hydro-dam for electricity. Hot springs, geothermal pools, lava fields, geysers, mossy greens, and active and dormant volcanoes are found throughout the country, which is also a very windy destination. It’s also a perfect place to see the northern lights, especially from October to April.

One interesting fact about the country is the placement of emergency pods on the main “F Roads.” Due to unpredictable weather, such as blizzards in July, the pods were placed for emergency shelter and come equipped with a heating stove, bed, and canned food for stranded travelers. “Glaciers and volcanoes are not a good mix,” Selman joked of the wintry weather.

Other interesting facts were shared, like the lack of a standing military, a police force that is unarmed, the Cod Wars and fishing rights between Iceland and the UK, maximum prison sentences of 16 years for the worst crimes, an airplane that had an emergency landing on a volcanic rock beach and is now a popular tourist attraction, imported pumpkins from the USA, tales of Viking outcasts and banishment to the Highlands, a lack of a homeless population after the country decided to fix it, and a requirement for high schoolers to know how to swim before they can graduate. Rotten shark is a historical and novel cuisine, though locals don’t want it in their refrigerators, for obvious reasons. The Blue Lagoon, a popular tourist spot, is known for its spa and mud treatments, but the warm waters are a byproduct of a nearby geothermal power plant.

Tourism and fishing are the big industry, though whaling is no longer allowed. Greenhouses are set up throughout the coastal communities, with a focus on fruits and vegetables.

Icelandic wool is a prized export, with

locals often spotted in handmade sweaters that provide comfort in all seasons and keep the wearer dry in the elements.

“It’s a very different society, very progressive, but an incredibly safe country,” Selman summarized of the Nordic country. His favored time to travel there is April, with winter storm season starting in October. He added that all the glacial water is safe to drink, and it takes about nine hours to drive around the island. The natives speak Icelandic and English, which is taught in schools. A few fancy hotels can be found, but many travelers opt

For an hour on Sunday, Nov. 28, more than 30 people were immersed in the travel experiences of a Morrison High School graduate turned globetrotter in the community room at Odell Library.

Though he’s visited 76 countries and counting, Victor Selman talked about one of his favorite destinations, the enchanting and mysterious Iceland. The “Adventure Travel in Iceland” special presentation was hosted by the Whiteside Forum as part of their monthly series.

Selman featured photos from his Icelandic travels and touched on travel secrets and hidden gems in the land of volcanoes and glaciers.

Though it only has a population of 366,425 people, Iceland is a popular tourist destination, with about 1.8 million visitors a year. Nature is the draw, with an unusual and diverse terrain unlike anywhere else, said Selman, who’s been to the European country seven times so far.

Selman first discussed the geography of the island, with two-thirds of the population residing in the capital of Reykjavik. Most of the island is uninhabitable, especially the central highlands, where the winter weather is harsh. The populated coastlines are spared the worst of winter due to the gulf stream and ocean currents, with temperatures on par to those in the Midwest. Still, 11% of Iceland is covered in glaciers and the land is bare of trees due to the ice and lava fields, and the Vikings’ use of them for heating and ships centuries ago.

Selman noted that the Icelanders like to name everything, with 269 named glaciers so far. One of the largest in Europe, Vatnajökull, is known for beautiful scenery, spectacular tours, special beers, and the “diamond beach” icebergs that are swept to the shore just after floating out to the North Atlantic. He discussed his hiking adventures through the glaciers, ice caves, and lava tubes, which can be very dangerous due to the always changing terrain.

Iceland is also known as the “Land of 10,000 Waterfalls,” though Selman called that an underestimate. The second largest waterfall of Europe is Godafoss, with the water cascading at 96,500 gallons per second. The waterway is also the final resting place of pagan statues of the past after a Chieftain submitted to the Norwegian demand to become a Christian country, or so the legends say.

At a special meeting, the city council authorized a request for bids on a new sewage treatment plant, pumping station and intercepting sewers. The new plant will be located between Fourth Street and the river near 18th Avenue on a tract of land purchased from the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.

Albany Shipping Association will host a grand opening to present its new mill and other new equipment. It will be serving a barbecued chicken dinner and have free gifts. There is a full line of farm chemicals and medication, a huge warehouse provides ample stock of Master Mix Feeds, and Gerald Kramer and Ken VenHuizen will be working with the new grind and mixing equipment.

David W. Mitchell was presented a trophy by his sons Tad, Ned, Dave and Jon Mitchell at the Fulton High School football banquet. The trophy was presented to David W. Mitchell for having attended every football game, both home and away, since 1958.

Carl Schoenhard and Herbert Shelly are the new owners of three rock quarries in Whiteside County. A new weight station building recently was erected at the Ustick quarry.

Although he missed some play because of injuries, Travis Schnitzler was honored as the most valuable player on the Steamers football squad.

He started on both offense and defense and was chosen for the first-team defensive unit in all-conference selections. He won honorable mention in the Chicago Sun-Times selections for All-State honors and was chosen for the All-Western second-team defensive unit.

The Fulton City Council sold about six acres of land to Ron Den Besten, president of Drives Inc. Den Besten’s bid was the only bid submitted for a long strip of land that runs through the Drives property in south Fulton. The tract is about 100 feet wide and 2,600 feet long and was the location for a railroad track in former years.

Iowa Department of Transportation officials said U.S. 30 expansion projects in some areas of Iowa have been suspended because of a reduction in revenue from road-use tax. Members of the U.S. Highway 30 Coalition in Iowa are struggling for a way to get funding for the project.

Unity Christian School participated in Operation Christmas Child. Shoeboxes were filled with small gifts, candy and hygiene products to send to the less fortunate in the world. Last year, the project collected more than 4.1 million gift boxes that were delivered to more than 80 countries. Unity Christian junior high and senior high sent 116 boxes.

Nov. 30, 2011

Another tragic Nov. 23 fire. Nick’s Body Shop, 4990 24th Ave. was completely destroyed by fire and is considered a total loss. The first arriving units found heavy fire conditions on the interior of the building with fire coming out of a 12-foot-wide overhead door. Fire departments that assisted were Albany, Thomson, Erie and Morrison. Prophetstown stood by at the Fulton station. It was exactly one year to the day when the Blecha building on the corner of Fourth Street and 10th Avenue was destroyed.

River Bend Middle School and Fulton Elementary students chose a book tag from the Christmas trees outside the library at FES during the Scholastic Buy One, Get One Free Book Fair.

It was a dream come true for Isabelle Cole on Saturday, Nov. 27, when Frosted by Isabelle officially opened in a brick-and-mortar location after months of preparations.

And with the holidays just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be more perfect for the debut of a bakery in Rapids City.

Opening her own bakery has been a dream ever since she was a little girl, Isabelle said. When the building space became available at 210 11th St. in Rapids City, she knew the time was right to make her dreams a reality.

With colorful, candy-like décor, a neon sign that reads “Eat Dessert First,” and a tantalizing display of perfectly garnished sweets, the bakery is a satisfying blend of sugary charm and entrepreneurial spirit. With delightful desserts beckoning from the display cases, the lifelong baker’s path to business owner and creator of sweet tooth confections finally came to fruition.

Isabelle graduated from Erie High School in 2017, then went to Kirkwood Community College, where she graduated with a degree in Business Administration Management. She continued her education at Scott Community College, receiving a certificate in Baking and Pastry Arts in 2020.

“I started as a self-taught baker and went to Scott to advance my knowledge and work alongside other students who share the same passion,” she said of her educational background, which helped her move closer to her dream.

She started “Frosted by Isabelle” on social media in 2019, mostly as an online portfolio to show friends and family her baking skills. The Facebook page became the foundation for her business, with word of mouth and return customers contributing to its growth. She also sold desserts at local events, which furthered her reputation as a top tier baker in the community.

“I enjoy taking ingredients and turning them into beautiful desserts,” Isabelle said. “My favorite is my scone recipe. I love baking them

and making a variety of flavors.”

Her frosting skills are also superbly sweet, from characters to flowers to seasonal décor.

Current menu items are scones, muffins, banana bread, cupcakes, gourmet cookies, glazed sugar cookies, macaroons, coffee cake, scotcharoos, seasonal dessert bars, and decorated sugar cookies, with flavors changing daily. She also offers custom ordering for that perfect party dessert.

Isabelle is the sole operator of the business, at least for the time being, though she had a few helpers, including her husband Kenneth, at the grand opening Saturday morning. A steady stream of supporters came by to purchase her freshly baked sweet treats, and free frosted cookies were offered to the first 40 guests.

The business is located next to Pulse 84 Energy Station, making Rapids City a destination for the perfect pairing of delicious desserts and specialty coffee drinks. Hours for Frosted by Isabelle are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Fulton businesses and organizations are planning for a fun and festive celebration of the holiday season during the annual Fulton Christmas Walk from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3.

A public hearing to approve a proposed property tax increase for River Bend Community Unit No. 2 for 2021 will be held on December 15, 2021, at 6:30 P.M. at the Fulton High School, 1207 12th Street, Fulton, IL, 61252.

The estimated property taxes to be levied for debt service and public building commission leases for 2021 are $672,019. This represents a .49% decrease over the previous year.

IV.

The total property taxes extended or abated for 2020 were $5,873,153.

The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2021 are $6,382,719. This represents an 8.68% increase over the previous year.

tangs were outscored 27-10 in the third quarter in their season opener at the Oregon tournament.

Trey Strating’s 19 points paced Morrison. Alex Anderson added 12 points, and Andre McQueen scored 10.

Fulton 49, Sherrard 30: The Steamers outscored the Tigers 29-13 in the second half to open their season with a win at the Orion tournament.

Baylen Damhoff’s 17 points paced Fulton. Ian Wiebenga added eight points, Ethan Price scored seven, and Brock Mason chipped in six.

Baylen Damhoff poured in 25 points to lead the Steamers to victory at the 10 & 32 Tip-Off Classic.

lies jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter, then put away a win at the Warren tournament with a 20-4 scoring edge in the third period.

Camryn Veltrop had 23 points, nine

rebounds and three blocks to lead Morrison. Shelby Veltrop added 14 points, four assists, two steals and two blocks.

Jordan Eads hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, four rebounds and two steals. Kalli Fisher had three points, five steals and three assists, and Kendra Fisher chipped in four assists and three steals.

Morrison 60, Warren 28: The Fillies finished off a 5-0 run through the Warren tournament by beating the hosts to take the title.

Amboy 49, Erie-Prophetsown 19: The Clippers cruised past the Panthers in a

fifth-place consolation semifinal, taking control with a 17-1 scoring edge in the second quarter.

Sydney Schwartz hit a pair o f 3-pointers for six points, and Kennedy Buck added five points in a balanced effort by E-P.

Wrestling

Sterling 36, Erie-Prophetstown 33: The Golden Warriors won five contested matches and a forfeit in a seven-bout stretch to build a lead, then held off the Panthers in a season-opening dual in Erie.

With E-P leading 9-6 after Sophia Wheeler’s 6-1 decision at 106 pounds and a forfeit from each team, Karson Strohmayer (126 pounds) won a 7-2 decision, Dylan Ottens (132) won by pin in 5:10 and Austin Clemens (138) won a 7-3 decision.

After E-P’s Jase Grunder got a pin in 1:19 at 145, Sterling received a forfeit at 152, then Tommy Tate notched a 37-second pin at 160. Noah Davis won by pin in 1:10 at 170 to give the Warriors a 36-15 lead.

First Reformed to celebrate second Sunday of Advent

Join us for worship on the second Sunday of Advent at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at First Reformed Church, 510 15th Ave. in Fulton. The sanctuary is beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. Children’s Christmas program Sunday at Emmanuel

Plan to join us at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, the second Sunday of Advent, and grab a cup of coffee in the Welcome Center before going into the sanctuary for the worship service. All are welcome and reminded that Emmanuel Church is a “come as you are” family and dress clothes certainly are not necessary.

This service will feature the Sunday School children presenting their annual Christmas program, “Do Not Be Afraid Parade.” This will be a wonderful Christmas presentation by the children of the church. Familiar carols will be sung by the congregation, accompanied by ministry coordinator Rich Criss.

Sunday School for children in preschool through high school follows worship until 11 a.m. Coffee and fellowship for adults also follows worship in the Christ Center. All are welcome and invite your friends!

Messiah Lutheran Church’s Swedish Supper set for Dec. 12

Messiah Lutheran Church in Port Byron will have its Swedish Supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.

Meals will be packaged for pickup inside the church. Curbside service will be available. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no dine-in option this year.
