COVID-19 EXPOSURE ROCK FALLS – The Whiteside County Health Department is warning of a potential COVID-19 exposure Nov. 14 at the Whiskey Barrel Saloon.

An asymptomatic person who was there from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. that day later tested positive for the coronavirus.

With cases on the rise throughout the area, the health department is warning people that “every interaction carries risk” and is encouraging everyone to wear a mask, keep social distancing, stay home when sick, limit close contacts and follow the state’s mitiga-

Whiteside County reports 53 new cases on Sunday

eingles@saukvalley.com The Whiteside County Health Department announced 53 new cases of COVID19 on Sunday; they involve four people younger than 20, nine in their 20s, nine in their 30s, 10 in their 40s, 13 in their 50s, four in their 60s, three in their 70s and one older than 80.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report statistics on Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 3,626 cases and 69 deaths. Lee County has had 1,486 cases, 906 recoveries and six deaths. Ogle County has had 2,456 cases, 1836 recoveries and 24 deaths. Carroll County has had 956 cases, 797 recoveries and 23 deaths.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen 3 days of positivity increases and 5 days of hospital admission increases, a decrease in both metrics.

The region’s positivity rate decreased from 18.2% to 17.1%. Currently, 26% of medical/surgical beds are available and 23% of ICU beds.

Illinois announced 10,012 new cases and 76 deaths. The state has had 656,298 cases and 11,506 deaths.

Sterling has had 10,422 tests and 1,321 cases. Rock Falls has had 5,201 tests and 780 cases. Dixon has had 11,572 tests and 1,067 cases. Rochelle has had 6,277 tests and 896 cases.

Bark Park planned at former Legion baseball diamond

Fido, Fluffy, and Spot will have a new place to play in Morrison if area residents and businesses help fund a planned dog park.

The “On The Move with Parks and Recreation” Committee of Morrison has launched its fundraising effort to bring “Bark Park” to the city.

The committee was formed from a Mapping group that began last year through the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs program, which helps communities create longrange visions and plans of action for achieving them through strategic vision and planning.

The committee’s goal is to provide and enhance recreational opportunities within the community for persons of all ages.

One of the needs the team identified was a dog park, said committee member Kathy Schmidt.

She said there used to be a dog park at the Waterworks Park, but it was by the creek which constantly flooded.

With a new location and vision in mind, the On the Move committee brought their plans to the city council, which approved their ideas and dedicated a new location on the north side of town for the project.

The Morrison Bark Park will be at the former Legion baseball diamond on Genesee St., just north of Northside Elementary School.

Schmidt said the committee has been working on the project for over a year, first determining what they wanted and how to get there.

The fundraising process started in April but had to stop due to COVID19. The committee regrouped in September and decided to finally launch the fundraising phase.

“We have lots of people with dogs in our town, and we’re hoping they also join in.”

The project vision includes a walking path, with opportunities to purchase bricks in memory of pets.

She said any community support will be appreciated as the project gets off the ground.

The project will be implemented in phases: Phase 1 will be fencing, Phase 2 will be a walking path, and Phase 3 is a parking lot, water station, benches, a fountain, and aesthetics.

The goal for Phase 1 is to raise $50,000, which is the estimate to purchase and install a fence around the Bark Park.

The continued growth in parks and recreation in Morrison rely on local and regional support, which is why the committee has partnered with the local Morrison Lions Club

Foundation to collect the donations to ensure they are tax-deductible.

Major donors will be appropriately recognized at the Bark Park with the following tiers: $1,000 or more - Westminster Champion; $500-$999 Working Dog Class; $200-$499 - Herding Dog Class; and $1.00-$199 Toy Dog Class. A $75 engraved Memorial Brick is in the Pooper Scooper Class.

Organizers are partnering with the local Morrison Lions Club Foundation, a 501c3 not for profit, to make sure donations are tax deductible.

There is also an option to donate online at Morrison Lions Foundation Facebook page, though the donation form needs to be mailed in in order to be recognized for a major donation.

Fulton Christmas Walk cancelled due to pandemic The organizers of the downtown Fulton Christmas Walk announced this week that the 2020 event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation applies

only to the event downtown. The Early American Crafters still intend to hold an outdoor Christmas Walk at Heritage Canyon on December 5, 2020.

The downtown walk organizers have sponsored a home decorating contest for the past two years. The Fulton Tourism Committee will be assuming responsibility for the con-

test this year, the details of which will be announced separately.

The organizers are hopeful that the downtown Christmas Walk can be brought back in 2021.

OBITUARIES DEANE M, BELCHER

Deane M. Belcher, 76, of Ames, Iowa, passed away Monday, November 16, 2020 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Deane Marshall Belcher was born March 14, 1944 near Amboy, Illinois to Harold and Helen (Harris) Belcher.

He was raised on the farm and loved the outdoors. He played football in high school and college.

He graduated from Western Illinois University with degrees in physical education and chemistry.

Deane taught and coached in Prophetstown, Illinois for several years.

He moved to Ames and worked for Northwestern Mutual Insurance.

He missed the kids and got back into teaching. He taught and coached in Maxwell.

Deane received his master’s degree from Iowa State in guidance and counseling and worked as an elementary guidance counselor in Bondurant.

He moved to the Ames School District as an elementary family resource counselor and worked mainly at Sawyer and Edwards schools.

He was kind, compassionate and caring; a real advocate for children.

Deane enjoyed fishing, hunting and trapping. He was very much a handy man and especially enjoyed working with wood. His favorite was diamond willow.

Deane will be deeply missed by his wife, Sue; children, Denise (Doug), Jim, Erin (Michael), and Drew; grandchildren, Lucas, Trenton, Mayer, Morgan and Marshall; his siblings, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, November 20, 2020 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 2900 Hoover Avenue, Ames

IA, 50010. Burial was at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

MARLA RAE BUIKEMA

Marla Rae Buikema, 82, of Morrison, died peacefully late Tuesday evening, November 9, 2020, at CGH Hospital in Sterling.

There will be no public services at this time. The Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

A recorded funeral and committal service is being prepared and will soon be available for viewing.

Marla was born October 6, 1938, in Clinton, Iowa, to W. Frank and Teresa (Haan) Timmons. She attended Fulton grade schools, graduated from Fulton High School, and earned her teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University.

On June 13, 1959, she married her high school sweetheart Roger Buikema of Morrison. Not long after she married, Roger and her father lovingly built the house where they lived with their family for over 50 years.

Before she was married, Marla taught third grade in the Clystic consolidated school. When she and Roger decided to start a family, she became a fulltime mother and homemaker.

She spent many hours preparing delicious meals, sewing matching outfits, and serving her church and community organizations.

She enjoyed playing bridge and tennis

with friends, entertaining guests, being a Girl Scouts leader, volunteering at the hospital auxiliary and gift shop, planning events, and going to every single event of her girls.

She was a devoted wife and mother, and loved it all: spending quality time with family and friends, going out to eat, camping, shopping at Chicos, going to church (with the obligatory drive through Rockwood Park afterwards), visiting the elderly and sick, accompanying singers on the piano, and making sure that her and her children’s clothes always matched!

Once her girls were in school, Marla returned to work at Morrison Junior High, as secretary and bookkeeper where she stayed for 21 years. (And all of her girls knew the pros and cons of having a mother that close to the principal.)

She was also the one who insisted that every family gathering be photographed - something for which her children are now so grateful.

Committed to Christ, Marla was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, served as a deacon, sang in the choir, served as an officer for Philathea and attended several Triennials for Women.

Marla and Roger both enjoyed worshipping and singing in the “Voices of Praise” choir at Emmanuel Reformed Church and fellowshipping with their YAH Seniors Group.

Marla was a loving daughter, faithful wife, cherished mother, and true friend.

She was generous with her time, talents, and finances. Her greatest joy was helping others, and “gift giving” was her love language.

Her sweet embrace, humor, great laugh, thoughtful tender heart, and listening ear, will be deeply missed by her brother, L. Frank Timmons of Florida; daughters Krista (Paul) Ritsema of Virginia, Jana Ortiz of New Jersey, and Heather (Giovanni) Diaz-Conrado of Texas; and grandchildren, Hannah (Nicolas) Van Balen of Virginia, Nathaniel Ritsema of California, Maya Diaz-Buikema of Colorado and Ava Diaz-Buikema of Texas.

Marla was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant son Daniel Lee. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the American Diabetes Foundation and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Jim and Anne Johnson celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on Thursday, Nov. 24.

Jim and Anne (Cox) were married at St. Johns Catholic Church, Rapid City, Illinois on Thursday, Nov. 24, 1951.

They farmed for many years.

Jim retired from John Deere in 1992 after 30 years. Anne worked at General Electric and volunteered at Kings Kloset. They are members of the Erie United Methodist Church.

They are the parents of Ruth (Jim) Melton, Roger (Kris) Johnson, Diane (Jerry) Chisamore, and Scott Johnson (finance Renee Gorham). They have 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Roger was born Sept. 15, 1937 in Morrison, to Perry and Tena (Wilkens) Buikema. He attended Morrison grade schools and was a graduate of Morrison Community High School. He received a B.S. in education and a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Northern Illinois University.

On June 13, 1959 he married Marla Timmons of Fulton, IL. Not long after they married, Roger designed and built the family home he and Marla shared for over 50 years.

Roger’s teaching career spanned 38 years. It began with 4 years of teaching physics and math at Lyndon High School in Lyndon. Thereafter, and for the rest of his career, he taught physical science, chemistry and physics and was head of the Science Department at Morrison Community High School.

During retirement, Roger kept busy as a self-employed professional painter.

He enjoyed outdoor activities, fishing, biking, gardening and photography. Roger’s commitment to his faith and church, Ebenezer Reformed in Morrison, was evidenced his service as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth group leader and choir member.

In his later years, Roger and his wife worshiped with Emmanuel Reformed Church, sang with Voices of Praise choir and fellowshipped with YAH Seniors Group. His commitment to service continued to his community as well. Roger served on Morrison’s Library Board, School Board, City Council, and many other volunteer organizations.

Roger’s greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He was a bit of a romantic and a clever cowboy.

He loved all things Western. On their honeymoon adventure in Colorado, Roger somehow managed to arrange a surprise cowboy serenade for his beautiful new bride. He was a man of faith and a follower of Christ; a loving and devoted hus-

band, a caring father, a true loyal friend and a passionate teacher. His beautiful smile, mischievous twinkling eyes and warm embrace will be remembered by his beloved wife Marla; daughters Krista (Paul) Ritsema of Virginia, Jana Ortiz of New Jersey and Heather (Gíovanni) Díaz-Coñrado of Texas; grandchildren, Hannah (Nicolas) Van Balen of Virginia, Nathaniel Ritsema of California, Maya Díaz-Buikema of Colorado and Ava Díaz-Buikema of Texas.

BETTY FABER

Betty Faber, 91, of Fulton, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, on Thursday, November 19, 2020, at MercyOne Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

A private family graveside service will be held at Fulton Township Cemetery. Rev. Kevin VerHoeven, pastor of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, will be officiating. There will be no visitation; the Fulton chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial to the Bethel Christian Reformed Church - Covenant Promise has been established.

Betty was born June 4, 1929 to Ralph and Martha Balk. She was the last one of 10 children. Don Faber, her husband of 49 years, preceded her in death on April 18, 1996.

She had several jobs, but will especially be remembered as co-owner of B & D’s Dutch Oven. She was a charter member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton, was a member of the church’s Mary & Martha Society, and had served as a Calvinette Counselor and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed collecting dolls, crafting and spending time with her family.

Survivors include four daughters, Donna VanZuiden of Fulton, Brenda (Ed) Langrehr of Fulton, Sheila (Garry) Huizenga of Fulton, and Laura Foster of Clinton, Iowa; and one son-in-law, Bill Estilow of Fulton. She was also very proud of her 15 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don; a daughter, Debra Estilow; a great-grandson, Michael Dann; sisters and brothers.

LOYD D. CROCKER

Loyd D. Crocker, 90, of Sterling, died Monday, November 16, 2020 at Morningside of Sterling.

He was born a long, long, time ago in Morganton, Arkansas, the son of Carl and Luna (Stark) Crocker on March 17, 1930.

He served proudly in the US Army as a SGT during the Korean War. Loyd retired from Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. as a car checker. He married Joanne Nelson on December 10, 1987. He followed his Southern Baptist roots and enjoyed reading his Bible. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan, and liked building things.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; daughters, Beth Zuidema and Angela (Jamison) Schroeder, both of Morrison; sons, Dr. Larry (Mary K.) Crocker of Godfrey, Donald (Tammy) Crocker of Morrison and David Joe (Valerie) Crocker of Livingston, Texas; his extended family, Steve (Shawn) Nelson, Jeff (Debbie) Nelson, Craig (Norma) Nelson and Debbie Schoonover; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; and 35 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, four sisters and five brothers.

Private family graveside services with military honors will be held on Wednesday at Oak Knoll Memorial Park. Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you “pay it forward” in acts of kindness to others during this difficult time.

EILEEN L. NELSEN

Eileen L. Nelsen, 73, of Port Byron died November 13, 2020 at home.

She was born in Moline, the youngest child of Bill and Alice (O’Hara) Yates of rural Port Byron. She attended local schools and graduated from Riverdale HS in 1965. She then went to BlackHawk JC and Western Illinois where she earned a BS in education.

In 1969, she married Terry Nelsen in Port Byron. They lived in Urbana, Bozeman, Montatna and College Station, Texas for his education before working in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Miles City, Montana and Washington, Illinois before

returning to Port Byron in 1996.

She loved watching her children and then her grandchildren play sports. She was a lifelong Cubs fan, and a good ballplayer herself.

She and Terry loved to travel. They drove all over the U.S. and Canada.

They visited Australia, Ireland, Scotland, England, the major cities of Europe, and then Dubai and South Africa. They enjoyed resorts in the Dominican Republic, Cancun and Jamaica with their children and grandchildren.

She was active in the United Methodist Women’s group at the Church of the Cross where her baking skills were highly regarded.

She is survived by her children, Richard of Port Byron, Anne (Scott) Maxell of Washington, and Katy of Hampton; and grandchildren, Brock, Blake and Bodey Maxwell of Washington.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, John Yates of Bushnell, and Daniel Yates of Ashtabula, Ohio; and sister, Linda Flynn of Jacksonville.

There will be no services or memorials at this time. Next summer, a celebration of life gathering will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to your favorite animal shelter or the Church of the Cross. Eileen loved her cats and always enjoyed animals of all kinds (except mice).

Shirley and Bill Sharer did most everything together and hated to be apart.

Shirley’s death on November 18, 2020, three days after her husband’s, stamped a poetic ending onto their 70-year marriage.

They married on Dec. 9, 1949 at Leon United Methodist Church in rural Prophetstown. Their marriage was a monument to love’s ability to sustain a couple sharing a journey that took them from teenagers to the retirement home.

Shirley wanted children, no matter the cost nor amount of work it would take to raise them. Her success at making her four children feel loved has echoed through three generations of descendants, who are mourning her passing in Sterling at age 90.

Shirley, who graduated from Prophetstown High School in 1948, was a woman of faith, serving the Leon United Methodist Church for more than 50 years as the Sunday School music teacher.

WILLIAM “BILL” SHARER

Bill Sharer and his high school sweetheart proved the old adage that in marriage, two become one is such a powerful force, only his death at age 91 on November 15, 2020 could bring it to an end.

William Lee Sharer married Shirley Mae (Goodell) on Dec. 9, 1949 at Leon United Methodist Church in rural Prophetstown. Their 70-year union wrapped four children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren in a blanket of love.

At family gatherings, Bill loved teasing grandchildren by stealing food off their plates. The tables were turned every April Fool’s Day when Shirley baked string into Bill’s pancakes. He enjoyed family get togethers while eating Ripp’s chicken in Ladd.

Bill was a dependable family man known for his even-keeled personality.

He set an example of how to prepare for every stage of life. Despite the physical challenges of aging, he was never apart from his wife. After graduating from Prophetstown High School in 1947, Bill See OBITIARIES, Page 9

meals, often using vegetables she grew herself in an oversized garden on the 40-acre farmstead along Perkins Road in rural Prophetstown where she and Bill lived from 1959 to 2013.

She canned or froze surplus vegetables. Her strawberry jam won’t be forgotten.

Shirley was a sender and receiver of many cards for all occasions. Those on her Christmas list were spoiled by her generosity.

Those giving her gifts were effusively thanked and told “you shouldn’t have.”

She was especially grateful for the work done by caregivers. Of all the holidays, April Fool’s Day was her favorite judging by the amount of string she annually baked into Bill’s pancakes.

Shirley was thrifty, hard-working, extroverted, and, pound-for-pound, among the strongest women around.

Her kind heart took it hard when visitors had to depart, an event that often left her in tears.

For many years Shirley worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at Morrison Hospital as a nurse’s aide.

Other employment stops included the Eclipse Lawnmower Company and Pen-

berthy, both in Prophetstown. Her limited spare time was often spent assisting her children with school, 4-H and Boy Scout projects.

Her children’s athletic careers demanded she spend untold hours cleaning uniforms.

Shirley’s hobbies included crossword puzzles, collecting porcelain chickens, savoring coffee, phoning friends and enjoying the company of pet dogs.

She often hosted grandchildren for week-long stays during which they perfected the making of mud pies behind the barn.

Shirley’s repertoire of favorite sayings included gems such as “she is as nice as she can be,” “she wouldn’t know me from a load of hay,” “bless her pea-picking heart,” and “whoa Blill.” Blill, it turns out, was her father’s plow horse.

Shirley was born March 25, 1930 to Iva (Tonkinson) and Glen Goodell. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sibling, Gail Goodell, brother-inlaw, Robert Sharer; sister-in-law Dorothy (Robert) Sharer and daughter-in-law Kris (Rollie) Sharer.

Shirley is survived by four children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Survivors include daughter Glenda (Keith Clouatre) Sharer-Clouatre of San Pedro, Belize, and

Phyllis Ruth Wolever, of Erie, died Monday, November 16, 2020 at Windsor Manor in Morrison, Illinois on her 100th birthday.

Phyllis was born November 16, 1920 in Rock Island, the daughter of Clarence and Lillian (Smith) Butzer. She married Norman Wolever on May 11, 1941 in Victoria, Illinois. He preceded her in death on June 23, 1991.

She worked for Erie Lumber and Grain for 23 years, retiring in 1981. She worked part-time for Vanex in Erie for several years. Phyllis was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church, an officer of the United Methodist Women, and the Church Board. She enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, friends and family.

She was an avid sports fan and loved the Erie Cardinals, the Cubs and the Bears. She was a wonderful baker and cook and was known for her pies and noodles.

Phyllis had two children, Carol Youngquist (deceased) (husband Frank) and Steven Wolever (Becky, deceased). She had eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and daughter, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James and Roger Butzer.

Bryan Caves signs on with Central Michigan Riverdale senior and decorated multi-sport athlete Bryan Caves signed his National Letter of Intent on Nov. 18 at the high school.

Caves has medaled three years at the state meet.

As a freshman, he earned sixth place at 182 lbs., won second place as a sophomore at 195 lbs., and most recently he captured a state title as a junior at 220 lbs.

He is an extremely hard-working multisport athlete who has dedicated his time in the weight room and wrestling club to get him to the point he is today. With one season left to wrestle for the Riverdale Rams, he has a record of 129-11 with 92 pins and 732 team points. He is the current school record holder for Most Pins in a season (33), Most Wins in a season (49), and Season Team Points (273). As a captain last year, he helped lead the Rams to

the most ever dual wins in program history (22) and a Regional Team Title.

He signed with Central Michigan, a nationally ranked Division 1 wrestling program and a member of the Mid-American Conference known as the MAC. Per the Central Michigan website, head Coach Tom Borelli is in his 30th year at the helm of the program. Borelli is a 2018 inductee into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Michigan Chapter. He has amassed 337 dual victories during his time at Central Michigan University, and his overall wins ranks him second in total wins among active coaches behind John Smith of Oklahoma State University. His athletes have earned All-American distinction 41 times, and his teams have won 13 MAC conference titles including 11 straight from 2002-2012.

akantecki@shawmedia.com With the state moving to Tier-3 COVID-19 mitigations, the IHSA announced Thursday that all winter sports and activities will be paused.

The announcement comes two days after the IHSA said it temporarily was pausing the winter sports season for low-contact sports, which were allowed to begin practicing Monday.

Those sports are boys and girls bowling, cheer, dance, boys swimming and diving and girls gymnastics.

Now, all winter sports, including those in the low-risk category, are on hold.

Boys and girls basketball were moved to the high-risk category last month. Wrestling, a high-risk sport, already had been moved to the summer season (May 3 through June 26).

The IHSA Board of Directors said it

will revisit the status of winter sports at its Dec. 2 meeting. The next scheduled meeting after that is Dec. 14.

“All IHSA sports and activities will cease by Nov. 20 for what we hope is a short-term pause,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. “Given the rising COVID19 cases in our state and region, we support the governor’s mitigations and believe it is imperative for everyone in the state to do their part in following them so that we can return to high school sports participation as soon as possible.”

In addition, conditioning and weight training both before and after school and open gyms are also paused. Outdoor workouts may be conducted in any sport in groups of 10 or less with masks and social distancing.

One-on-one skill work between a coach and student is permitted for

winter sports but limited to one coach and one student; however, coaches cannot organize nonschool participation in any fashion.

Practices and competitions may be conducted virtually for activities only.

“Taking into account the current state mitigations, the board believes that early to mid-December will be the most reasonable target to review the status of winter IHSA sports and activities,” Anderson said. “The board is sensitive to the scheduling difficulties these delays create for athletic directors and coaches.

However, our experiences this summer and fall lead us to believe that setting arbitrary start dates hinders the process even more. We realize it may seem redundant, but we have to preach patience as we await more data and direction from the state.

Despite the obstacles this unprece-

dented school year has presented, the board’s vision to provide participation opportunities in all IHSA sports has not wavered.

The IHSA had invited Gov. JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois State Board of Education and other agencies to Thursday’s meeting, but representatives from the governor’s office and IDPH did not attend.

The IDPH has said the recent spike in coronavirus cases and statewide positivity rate already have surpassed the spring peak. On Thursday, the IDPH reported 14,612 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 168 additional deaths, the second straight day with more than 100 deaths reported.

The IHSA added that “adhering to the mitigations is vital to the hopes of safely playing high school sports in Illinois as soon as possible.”

The holidays often involve purchasing gifts for close friends and loved ones as well as making a delicious meal the entire family will love. But nothing sets the holiday scene and overall mood more so than beautiful decorations and other seasonal accoutrements.

Many people leave no room untouched for the holidays, meaning color schemes or trinkets may carry through from top to bottom.

Decking the halls this season can be made even easier with some of these handy ideas.

Emmanuel Reformed welcomes new pastor The Emmanuel Reformed Church, 202 E Morris Street, Morrison is thrilled to announce the arrival of her new pastor and wife, Pastor Luke and Christine Schouten who will officially begin ministry at the church on Sunday, Dec. 6.

Pastor Luke and Christine have been married for 38 years and are the parents of three grown children.

Their oldest daughter is currently serving as Worship Leader for a church in South Dakota. Their middle daughter holds a teaching degree, but currently is a stay-athome mother to their three grandchildren. Their youngest, a son, holds a degree in Youth Ministry, but has decided to return to college and is in nursing school.

Following high school graduation, Luke attended Northwestern College in Orange City, IA for two years but could not decide what his call on his life was.He left college, married Christine, and farmed full time for a time.He also owned a business for five years.Following God’s leading,

he and Chris served as missionaries in Mescalero, NM working as youth pastor and maintaining the facilities and grounds and overseeing mission groups who would d come to help out. It was there that Luke found his heart reenergized for ministry.He then returned to Northwestern College where he graduated two years later with a degree in Christian Education.For the next 22 years, Luke served two churches in youth ministry positions and began seminary to become ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Reformed Church in America.

He was ordained in 2007.

He and Chris have served as pastor for a church plant in Naples, Florida and most recently served for seven years at the First Reformed Church in Sibley, Iowa.Christine served as a teachers aid in Sibley, Iowa while Luke pastored there.

Please welcome them to Morrison.The Emmanuel family is excited to have the Schoutens joining them.
