It’s October – a month traditionally devoted to breast cancer awareness. All women should understand their risk for breast cancer. It is the number-one cancer diagnosed in women, apart from skin cancer. In fact, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and that amounts to hundreds of thousands of women every year. Breast Cancer Awareness Month was first observed over 40 years ago. The focus for the month is on promoting early detection, reducing stigma around breast cancer, and supporting patients and survivors. It seems to be working. Since the first BCAM, breast cancer death rates in the U.S. have dropped by 44%. While I support the mission of BCAM, as a health coach, I would also like women to be aware of preventive measures they can take to reduce their risk of ever developing breast cancer. The following recommendations come from the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the World Health Organization: • Maintain a healthy weight. Excess body fat, especially after menopause, is

linked to higher breast cancer risk. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, combined with regular physical activity, helps keep weight in a healthy range. • Stay physically active. Regular exercise reduces cancer risk and supports overall health. Studies show that active women have lower breast cancer risk than inactive women. Try to move for at least 20 to 30 minutes most days; walking, swimming, dancing, or strength training all count. • Breastfeed. Breastfeeding can lower a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer, with longer duration providing greater benefit. • Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. smoking cessation program. And bear in mind, more women die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. • Avoid prolonged use of hormones. Long-term use of certain hormone replacement therapies (HRT) or combined hormonal contraceptives may slightly increase breast cancer risk. • Avoid excessive radiation exposure. High cumulative radiation exposure, such as from certain medical imaging or occupational sources, can increase cancer risk. It’s also important to mention the role that alcohol plays. Alcohol is a carcinogen that raises the risk of many different cancers, but research suggests that drinking alcohol may be particularly likely to increase breast cancer risk. A 2026 study found that women who drink heavily have a 52% higher risk of developing breast cancer. So, the more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer.

I love a good mystery. I have dozens of them dangling from various key chains. But hey ... that’s what my generation does. Or so I am told by some guy who seemed wise. I didn’t write down the name of the guy, so I call him “the prof” because he sounded smart. As he talked, I simply nodded to no one in the room but the dog, and chuckled a few times. He was talking true and preaching to the choir, as they say. The choir being all of us lucky devils who grew up as Baby Boomers. He was detailing a list of seven things that younger generations would never experience. Things that also help define Boomers. I am not diving into the prof’s list. There’s nothing on it that would surprise you. But he did strum a chord with me when he mentioned keys – old, abandoned, mystery keys. He used them as an example of what Boomers do with things that are useless. Useless means we don’t really know what they are or where they came from. But they sure do look important. So ... do we throw them away? Of course not.

PAPERWORK Lonny Cain We save them. In case we ever need them or can figure out what they are for. And that includes keys. We save keys. It’s what Boomers do. I know I do. When the prof noted Boomers won’t throw away old keys, I suddenly flashed back a few days. I was with my friend Chris visiting antique shops. We look for books, but you can imagine what it’s like for a Boomer to enter an antique shop. Kids in a candy store. Antique stores are full of things that Boomers want to rescue, preserve, protect and treasure. They see history, rusted and bent, but beautiful history. Are you starting to see the problem here ... the dilemma that faces all Boomers? But there’s more ... about the key thing. In one of the antique stores, I see a small basket. It’s full of keys. All kinds, shapes and sizes. Just keys. “Hey Chris,” I shout, to get him to

slow down and turn back. I pull a key from the basket and hold it up. “Want a key? It’s only a dollar.” We both laugh. A key for $1. Seemed silly. We both wondered why. I already have my own basketful of keys at home. I don’t need to add more. Yes, yes, I can see someone buying a few keys for an artsy-crafty project, or hey, maybe somebody actually collects keys as a hobby. Probably a Boomer. Still, it’s a mystery to me, and now I am telling myself that when I return to that store, and we will, I will ask if anyone actually buys keys ... and why. And perhaps I should ask if they’d buy keys from me. Now, as a Boomer, I, of course, have a large collection of keys on a variety of key rings. I did a quick count today, and I have about 45 keys. A few keys are labeled. Most are not, and they are in a basket, a designated spot to toss pens, cords, coupons and strings … and a light bulb. In that basket are many keys that have lost their mission. We have no idea what they unlock. But they cannot be trashed because they do unlock some-

thing, somewhere. Right? Which, for Boomers, is one of the sweet mysteries of life. I have a key ring I carry whenever I leave the house. That’s normal, right? It holds my truck key and house key, of course. But as I was counting all my keys earlier, I noticed that on my special key ring there were three strange keys. I do not know what they unlock. They must be important. I did not want to lose them. But I never use them. Too bad one of them doesn’t unlock my lousy memory. That, of course, is another side effect of being a Boomer. It’s likely I will never find locks to connect to all my keys. But I will keep them. Can’t help it. Stay away. Leave me alone. And before you say I’m being silly, let me remind you my keys still have some value. About $1 each, I’d say.

OBITUARIES lives for over 35 years before his passing on January 29, 2008. Throughout her working years, Nancy held a variety of positions in healthcare, food service and hospitality. She worked as a nursing assistant at St. Anthony’s Hospital in the Quad Cities, Community General Hospital in Sterling, IL, and Illini Hospital in Silvis. She also served as a special procedure aide at Moline Public Hospital. Nancy later worked at Rink’s Market in Geneseo and managed the bakery departments at Eagle Food Center in Geneseo and Kewanee. She went on to manage the catering program at Augustana College in Rock Island. Following retirement, Nancy continued her caring nature through her work as a home care specialist. She was an expert cake decorator and enjoyed creating beautifully decorated cakes. In her free time,

she enjoyed being outdoors, walking through the woods looking for mushrooms, fishing and growing flowers. She was also an avid animal lover, especially when it came to dogs. Survivors include one sister, Janet (Tom) Beveroth of Morrison, IL; five brothers, Barry (Dorothy) Maxfield of Merrill, WI, Brian (Roberta) Maxfield of DeKalb, IL, Paul Maxfield of Morrison, IL, Vaughn (Martina) Maxfield of Morrison, IL, and Phillip (Anita) Maxfield of Leesburg, GA; many nieces and nephews. best friends, and most of them had four legs and a tail. The dogs got more of his attention than most people did, and they never once complained about his jokes. Dave married his soulmate, Janet, and together they had two kids, Kristy and Evan. He was the most loyal man you’d ever meet. If you were his, you were his for life, and that included being on the receiving end of his jokes. He was loved by everyone and a stranger to few. His smile could melt your heart, and his wit could break the ice in any situation, whether or not the situation asked for it. Dave wouldn’t want anyone sitting around being sad. If you’re looking for a way to honor him, go have a good time, fix something that isn’t yours, and give your dog an extra treat. He is survived by his wife, Janet; his children, Kristy (Mark) Saathoff of Erie, IL and Evan (Destiney) Brown of Prophetstown, IL; grandchildren, Benjamin, Ethan, and Harper; sister, Corrine (Doug) Buffington of Preemption, IL; nieces, Elizabeth, Erin, Caity and Chloe; three great nieces and one great-nephew. A memorial visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 AM on Friday, November 6, 2026, at the Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. His memorial service will follow at 11:30 AM at the funeral home with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorials have been established to Odell Public Library and Resthave Home. Louis was born November 20, 1951, in Dubuque, IA, the son of Melvin H. and Irma (Hinde) Albrecht. He proudly served in the Army Reserves from 1971–1976. On March 6, 2003, he married Rebecca Munther Stuart in Morrison. He worked for many years as a grocer, a role he took pride in and viewed as a way to serve his community. He also enjoyed his years as a referee for local sports, a role well suited to his personality as someone who

valued fairness and wasn’t afraid to call things as he saw them. Whether at work or elsewhere, Louis was never one to sit idle. He believed there was always something to be done if a person simply took the time to look around. Above all, Louis loved spending time talking and laughing with his family. From sharing his love of fishing with his boys or baking with his granddaughter, he was always ready with a smile and something to talk about. He treasured the time spent together, making memories through the everyday moments. Survivors include his wife, Becky; sons, Luke (Stacza Lipinski) Albrecht and Joshua (Kelly) Albrecht; stepchildren, Jason Stuart, Tawnya (Andy Beranek) Carroll and Jonathan Stuart; grandchildren, Owen Albrecht, Albrecht Dode Lipinski, August Albrecht, Dashiell Albrecht, Corrine (Seth Dykema) Carroll, Caleb Carroll, Jaslyn (Caleb Banks) Stuart, Cadynce Stuart and Jacey Stuart; great-grandson, Cohen Banks; sister-in-law, Tess Albrecht; brothersin-law, Jim Rummery, Michael (Paula) Munther and Frank Munther; many nieces and nephews. He was born on April 9, 1961, to Ruth and Robert, and had the privilege of having Curt Simpkins as a stepfather. He grew up on a farm, where you either learn to fix everything or you go without. Dave learned he could start a rock if it had a motor, and if it didn’t, he’d give it one. Anything broken that crossed his path got fixed, and anything that wasn’t broken was usually at risk. A lifelong farmer, Dave worked from dark to dark and spent whatever daylight was left building or destroying derby cars. Rumor has it the destroying part was his favorite. FULTON’S GLIMPSES OF THE PAST: NOV. 3 • Nov. 2, 1966 • At the congregational meeting at the Second Reformed Church, a call was issued to the Rev. Harold Ringenoldus of Hall, Iowa, to become pastor of the Fulton church. It was announced that he has accepted the call and plans to move to Fulton the last week of November. • Alderman Robert Jones suggested at the meeting of the City Council that the Council consider withdrawing from the Fulton Fire Protection District and setting up its own fire department. Mr. Jones said that the Fire District had been billed twice for the increased fire hydrant rental charges set up in an ordinance adopted several months ago and thus far the City had not received any communication from the District regarding the bill.

The speedy back has scored 11 touchdowns so far this season, gaining 794 total yards. • Most of the city’s employees are having an unexpected vacation this week after the city’s workers’ compensation insurance expired over the weekend. Bids for a new policy were to have been opened at Tuesday’s meeting, but there were no bids. Council members, city employees and local insurance agents discussed the problem and are optimistic that an insurance policy can be provided within the next day or so.

Local youths interested in food service, culinary careers, or entrepreneurship are invited to attend an upcoming ServSafe Food Manager Certification Training hosted by University of Illinois Extension 4-H. This hands-on training provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to safely handle and prepare food, an essential requirement for many jobs in the food service industry. Youths will learn key topics, including proper food handling, sanitation, time and temperature control, and how to prevent foodborne illness. At the conclusion of the training, participants will have the opportunity to take the nationally recognized ServSafe Food Manager Certification exam, a valuable credential for those seeking employment in restaurants, concessions, catering, or other food-related businesses. “This training is a great opportunity for youth to build real-world skills and earn a certification that can open doors to future job opportunities,” said Kathy Book, 4-H youth educator. It’s especially beneficial for young people interested in working in the food industry or starting their own food-based ventures.” The program is open to youths ages 14 to 19 and will be held from 4-8 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5 at Sauk Valley Communi-

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL – REGIONAL FINAL: FULTON DEF. BUREAU VALLEY 23-25, 25-10, 25-13

By BRAD MARTIN Shaw Local News Network correspondent Cliché or not, the old saying, it’s not how you start, but how you finish is true. So is “don’t poke the bear,” as the Bureau Valley volleyball team found out during the Class 1A St. Bede Regional championship match Thursday in Peru. The No. 4-seeded Storm took the opening set against Fulton, and the No. 1 Steamers responded with two dominant sets to claim the regional title with a 23-25, 25-10, 25-13 victory. The Steamers (31-5), who have won 21 matches in a row, advance to the Wethersfield Sectional on Tuesday to play Brimfield. “Bureau Valley was playing very hard in that first set,” Fulton sophomore Kerby Germann said. “We weren’t moving well and where we needed to be and then once we started to do that, we got some quick sets and started getting some big hits going. We did not want to see this end here in regionals.” An exciting first set saw the two teams go back and forth. Mya Shipp led the way for the Storm and her kill gave BV a 4-2 lead early on, but three straight shots that sailed long tied the set at five. Fulton pulled ahead 9-5 with a couple big blasts from Germann, but the Storm fired back with a block from Elise House and an ace from Audrey Endress before a combined block from Brynley Doty and Libby Endress tied the score at 9.

The Fulton volleyball team poses with its plaque after defeating Bureau Valley 23-25, 25-10, 2513 in the Class 1A St. Bede Regional championship match on Thursday, Oct. 29, in Peru. Shipp and Libby Endress started a 5-0 run for the Storm that included a kill down the line from Shipp twice to take a 14-10 edge. Fulton, however, started to make a run as Germann fired a shot down the line and then another that went off the net and landed for a point. The Steamers appeared poised to take the opening set as they led 23-19. But Fulton was whistled for two hits before Shipp put down a kill. After a quick hit by House and a Doty ace, the set was tied at 23. Averi Bush sent a shot into the net and then Shipp ended the Storm’s winning 6-0 run with a kill to cap the first-set victory. “We came out and executed our plan well tonight in that first set,” Storm coach

Saige Oleson said. “We soaked in the environment of the regional championship and Mya [Shipp] is just a huge playmaker for us and the girls rally around that.” However, that was about all the excitement the Storm would have as the Steamers started firing off the cannons as often as they could set up the assist. It started right from the opening tip as Chloe Wilkin unleashed a monster shot and then Bush delivered back-to-back aces. Aubrey Endress briefly ended the run with a kill for Bureau Valley, but the Steamers immediately returned fire as Germann made it 5-1 with back-to-back kills. Bush had a mishit for Fulton, but backto-back mishits from the Storm and a big hit from Germann made it 9-2. Germann added two more kills and then

teammate Nora Kingery added two of her own as the Stamers’ lead grew to 14-4. Wrenn Coffey served up an ace for Fulton and then Wilkin had a pair of kills as Fulton built a commanding 20-5 lead. Wilkin hit a rocket on two plays and an ace from Bush helped the Steamers take the second set 25-10. “I think we had a little check of our attitude after that first set,” Fulton coach Stacy Germann said. “We reminded ourselves what our season goals were and Kerby [Germann] and Chloe [Wilkin] do a really good job hitting-wise, and they just got on a roll.” The third set was a mirror image of the second as Wilkin stuffed a shot and then had a block as the lead was 4-2 early on for Fulton. Doty sailed a shot long and then a block attempt went wide before Kingery blasted one down the center of the court for a 10-6 advantage. A quick swat of the ball from Wilkin to go along with a combined block with Ella Folk made it 17-7 after a pair of aces from Brianne Brennan. Back-to-back kills from Germann and Wilkin extended that Steamers’ lead to 19-8. Seconds later, a tip from Wilkin and a Germann shot that could not be returned pushed the contest to 21-10. A couple of blocks that went wide and then a miscommunication on the Storm’s part helped the Steamers close out the match. Germann led with 15 kills, while Wilkin added 10, and Brennan had 17 digs and Germann 12 for the Steamers. Bureau Valley finishes 26-8-1.
