Beyond her fabulous career, I see achievements that built a family “100 miles a day.” That’s all she has to say. To get what she wants. Because the message, although said with a tiny twist of humor, delivers a powerful punch of truth ... and guilt. Which is why Cindy, my wife, has a bottomless trunk full of IOUs from me. Each one simply quotes her: “100 miles a day.” For several decades she has driven about 100 miles a day to work and back home. She’s up before 6 a.m. (the dog helps with that) and hits the road by 7 ish. She gets back home by 5 ... or later sometimes … with plans for a dinner meal. Or, after an exhausted exhale, she suggests we go out to eat or order in. I would never object because ... well, you know ... “100 miles a day.” My drive to work was less than five minutes. Those logistics fell into place long ago because of our jobs and our love of the community we live in. Ottawa is a great place to raise a family. But all that changed on Oct. 15, a Thursday and a good day for Cindy. The plan was for me to drive her to work and then join her after a special gathering. I was the designated driver. So we pulled into the lot and saw her usual parking spot was filled with a cluster of co-workers. They were wearing small cone party hats and holding a banner: “Happy Retirement.” Chalked across her space were many stars and this greeting: “Congratulations, Cindy. Reserved for VIP.” She was greeted with lots of smiles. Cindy teared up. No surprise. It rolled into a day of goodbyes and thank-yous, her last day as Public Information Offi-
PAPERWORK Lonny Cain cer for the Will County Forest Preserve District. She was retiring after more than 12 years doing something she loved. At the end of her shift, a co-worker drove her to join more co-workers at a local restaurant where they relived memorable moments and laughed – a lot. I’m glad I was there to see it. Perfect closing to an important day. A joyful nudge into retirement. Retirement. No longer working. Freedom is the word tossed around by those wishing her the best. She has not felt the impact of that freedom yet. And I know it will take some time to figure it out. I’ve been retired for almost 12 years, and I’m still working on it. This was not an easy thing for her to do. She has been working since she was 16 years old, starting in one of those tiny Fotomat booths. Now she is wrapping up a journalism/writing career that spans about 45 years. Most of her newspaper years were with The Herald-News in Joliet. “I commuted from Ottawa to Joliet since 1986, so 40 years of avoiding potholes and crazy drivers. And scary trucks!” she told friends. “Through all the stress, deadlines and traffic jams, it was the people I met that nourished my soul. Colleagues, story subjects, public officials. Thanks to everyone for your
friendship and support! On to the next chapter of my life where I get to be just me. No hoops to jump through, no ladder to climb. -30-” Those 100 miles a day became routine for her. Part of the deal for something she wanted to do. For me, that drive was a daily fear. When her car pulled back into the garage, I relaxed. Until the next day. She looks back at her long drive as part of an exciting career. She has a lot to be proud of, but I see more. I see sacrifice. She made the drive. I did not. She worried about meals. Sometimes I opened cans of tuna. She managed doctor visits, daycare and then school, shopping, sports, birthday parties and more for our sons. I transported when I could. We both worked. Like so many others, we needed two incomes to build a comfortable lifestyle for our family. In the end, her income far surpassed mine. For good reason. I suspect her working days are not completely over. Time will tell. There’s no rush. I am proud of her achievements. And will be ever grateful that her tiresome 100 miles a day began with and returned to family. Now she joins me in the retirement world. Her life will change and, oh yeah, so will mine. Again. As I do have miles and miles of IOUs left to repay.

They said messages showed him obtaining Adderall pills for another person who sold them to college students in Macomb. Prosecutors also said messages showed the man agreeing to sell Adderall for another person. The filing does not say whether anyone else has been charged.
State prosecutors have asked the Illinois Appellate Court to reinstate an order jailing a Whiteside County man charged with receiving about 420 grams of methamphetamine through the mail. A judge released the man, Scott Pruis of Morrison, on GPS monitoring July 14, two months after ordering him held. The appeal, filed Oct. 9 in the 4th District Appellate Court, argues that Whiteside County Judge James Heuerman reversed his own detention order without the new information or change in circumstances that state law requires. Heuerman ordered Pruis held. In a written order, the judge found that conditions short of jail would not protect the community because “defendant received a delivery of nearly one pound of methamphetamine to his house.” “The reality is, possessing this quantity of methamphetamine suggests that there is the movement of a lot of methamphetamine,” Heuerman said when ordering Pruis to be detained in jail. Heuerman said that amount would have a serious, detrimental effect on any community it reached. At one point, he said 420 grams pointed to a big-time business, and that a quantity over 400 grams meant the person was somewhere in the stream of commerce. Pruis’ new attorney, James Mertes of Sterling, filed a motion on July 7 for pretrial release. During a subsequent hearing on the motion, Mertes cited a new, unpublished 5th District Appellate Court decision, People v. Cockerell, which found that possessing a large amount of methamphetamine does not by itself justify detention. Defense counsel argued at the hearing that “there is no basis for continued detention.” Heuerman granted the motion. According to the filing, he cited Cockerell and said he did not believe he had “any evidence with regard to defendant possessing or having access to weapons.” The release conditions include: • GPS home monitoring • A 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew • Random drug and alcohol testing • Surrendering any firearms and his passport • Routing all mail to a post office box
that pretrial services may search • Registering any phone or electronic device with pretrial services before using it Whiteside County Assistant State’s Attorney Ryan Simon then appealed Heuerman’s decision to allow pretrial release. At a Sept. 11 hearing, presided over by Heuerman, Simon argued to detain Pruis. Heuerman ruled in Pruis’s favor, saying he felt compelled to follow the Cockerell ruling. Pruis remains on pretrial release as his case heads toward trial.
The appeal
State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor David J. Robinson wrote the appeal. He argues that the defense motion asked the court to reconsider continued detention, not to correct an error in the original ruling. A request to reconsider, he wrote, requires new information or a change in circumstances, and the defense offered neither. Prosecutors argued that the only new information at the July hearing was their own: a lab test confirming methamphetamine and a benzodiazepine, and the phone records. They said that evidence weighed against release. Prosecutors filed notice of appeal Sept. 16, according to the filing. The state asks the appellate court to send the case back to Whiteside County with instructions to reinstate the May detention order. The filing contains no response from the defense to the appeal. Pruis is next scheduled to appear in Whiteside County Circuit Court for a pretrial conference at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 28.

By JEANNINE OTTO jotto@shawmedia.com Darryl Hogue has been hired to serve as the interim school superintendent for Amboy Community District 272. The Amboy School Board voted unanimously at a special meeting on Sept. 3 to hire Hogue as interim superintendent while Amboy’s regular superintendent, Joshua Nichols, remains on medical leave. Nichols suffered a medical incident in mid-August and has been on medical leave since then. Amboy High School Principal Janet Crownhart was serving as acting superintendent as the 2026-27 school year started. “We realized pretty quickly that there are some things in a school district that have to be done by a superintendent. While Mrs. Crownhart was serving as our acting superintendent, she could not sign off on grants or certain reports that were due, and she couldn’t file things that need to be filed by the superintendent,” said Katie Pratt, president of the Amboy Community Unit District 272 school board. Pratt said the district and board tried

Amboy superintendent Joshua Nichols explains the motivation for a mentoring program on Aug. 1, 2024. to find ways to work around those barriers. “We made some calls and asked if there was a workaround, because certainly this isn’t the first time a school district has faced a situation like this. We got to a point where the time we were trying to work around this was getting to be a lot,” Pratt said.

She said that superintendents in neighboring districts immediately called to offer what help they could. “We had superintendents from the area reaching out to ask how they could help. That was so generous and kind, and it speaks volumes of how people regard Mr. Nichols as a person,” she said. Hogue, who retired in June 2026 after
serving 12 years as superintendent of the River Bend School District in Fulton, was one of the superintendents who offered to help Amboy school officials in Nichols’s absence. “Within the first week of school, he stopped in to the high school to check in with Mrs. Crownhart on things,” Pratt said. Hogue served 10 years as principal at Morrison Junior High School and another 10 years as a special education teacher. He also served for 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. Pratt said the board consulted with Nichols on hiring Hogue. “They are close colleagues and come from similar districts, so they consulted each other quite often. Mr. Nichols thought it was a great option and Dr. Hogue was agreeable, so we made the decision to bring him on as interim superintendent,” Pratt said. Hogue is working on a limited, parttime basis, with his salary coming from the district’s reserve funds. Pratt said Nichols continues to recover and is hoping to be back in a limited capacity after the first of the year.

• Story Quest is a choose-your-own-adventure story come to life. You’ll be given the first page of your adventure at the library. From there, the choices you make will lead you around town, dodging spells or fighting dragons before you’re led back to the library in hopes of putting yourself back to normal. Participants receive a passport to track their travels. The quest is designed for kids and grown-ups. It is free and offered every day.
Genealogy research
• The Erie Public Library District is a FamilySearch affiliate library, giving you free access to extensive genealogy records, including some 400 million images viewable only at an affiliate library. Stop in, log in on our computer, and learn about your history.
Halloween Trick-o-Week
• Have a little goblin that needs more time when trick-or-treating or can’t go on the 31st? Maybe your K-Pop Star needs to practice before the big night. Or maybe your kid just loves candy. Whatever your reason, you can trick-or-treat at the library from Oct. 26 to 31. Wear your costume and come into the library the week of Halloween. There will be games, there will be prizes, and there will definitely be candy. You’re very scary – so please, only trick-or-treat us once. All ages are invited.
Halloween Scavenger Hunt
• We’re so lucky to be (barely) inside the trunk-or-treat zone from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31, and this year we are joining the fun! We are challenging you to finish our Halloween Scavenger Hunt during trunk-or-treat to receive an extra special treat (and maybe a trick….) from us! Will there be free books? Full-sized candy? Stickers? Prizes? You’ll only know if you complete the scavenger hunt! Stop by the library to get your hunt list, complete it and turn it in before the end of trunk-or-treat to claim your prize! All ages are welcome and the event is free.
Mahjong Club
• You love mahjong but can’t find anyone to play? Come to the free Mahjong Club and meet new friends and play. The club meets all Mondays of the month from 9 to 11 a.m., and on the first and third Mondays of the month from 1 to 3 p.m.
Get your own microgreens
• The doctor said to add in some salads, but you don’t know where to start. With an estimated 40 times the nutrients of their full-grown plants, microgreens can get you on your goal track. Come to the library and get your daily serving of microgreens (and a few recipes to try with them) completely free.

The Illinois EPA has developed draft Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) reports for the Cycle 2024 Watershed Projects of seven watershed reports. These draft reports evaluate waters that do not meet required water quality standards and identify the pollutants contributing to those impairments. Illinois EPA implements the program in accordance with Section 303(d) of the Federal Clean Water Act. A TMDL is the sum of the allowable amounts of a single pollutant that a waterbody can receive from all contributing sources and still meet water quality standards or designated uses.

SVCC free pumpkin smash returns Illinois Extension invites the public Nov. 7 to compost post-Halloween pumpkins at its annual event in Dixon SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK
University of Illinois Extension will host a free pumpkin smash from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 7 at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, where community members can bring old pumpkins to be smashed and composted instead of thrown away, according to a news release. The annual outdoor event is intended to divert pumpkins from landfills. Pumpkins are organic waste that releases the greenhouse gas methane during decomposition and can leach water through trash piles to nearby waterways, according to the release. Participants are asked to bring pumpkins that are free of candles,
stickers, glitter, yarn, and other synthetic decorations. Smash stations will include a trebuchet, mallets, a battering ram and a piñata-style station, among others, according to the release. The smashed pumpkins will become compost for the pumpkin field. The event will feature pumpkin-themed games and other family-friendly activities provided by 4-H, Extension Master Gardeners and other community organizations, according to the release. Attendees should park in the east Sauk Valley Community College parking lot and walk south along the sidewalk toward the solar panels, according to the release. Organizers asked that people not park along the entrance road. The college is next to the Dillon Mall. The event will happen rain or shine, and no cost or registration is required to attend. For questions, contact Bruce J. Black at brucejb@illinois.edu or

815-632-3611. According to the release, Illinois Extension’s smash events are held in collaboration with SCARCE, an Illinois environmental nonprofit that started pumpkin smashes in 2014. Illinois Extension joined the effort and hosted its first in 2019. According to SCARCE, Illinois pumpkin smashes have composted more than 1,250 tons of pumpkins in the past 10 years, reducing greenhouse gas by 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and diverting more than 300,000 gallons of water from landfills, according to the release. Far from “great,” as I watch our government abandon the Ukrainian people out of desperation to get diesel. Diesel that is in short supply due to an unnecessary war, the consequences of which this administration failed to see or ignored. Now, it cannot be “undone.” Yet, we do undo our support for a country invaded by Russia, calling for a ceasefire, criticizing Ukraine but not a word against Russia, which continues to strike Ukraine’s power sources. We can undo sanctions against communist Russia and be buddies with Putin to get diesel. We are giving the communists billions of dollars! Many who have thrown the label “communist” on American citizens are now supporting a communist nation. What is America becoming? I want to be clear that I have no ill wishes for farmers. I’m the daughter of a farmer, and I’m aware of the pain farmers are experiencing under this administration. I begrudge no relief if it should come. I just believe it’s very important that we recognize how we got here.

By PAYTON FELIX pfelix@shawmedia.com An Ogle County judge on Friday denied a former Carroll County sheriff’s deputy’s bid to dismiss two charges against him in connection with the 2024 death of a Mount Carroll teen. Matthew Herpstreith, 45, of Savanna, was charged March 24, 2025, with reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony; reckless conduct and obstructing justice, both Class 4 felonies; attempting to obstruct justice by destroying evidence, a Class A misdemeanor; and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, a petty offense, in the death of 18-year-old Jackson Kradle of Mount Carroll. Herpstreith pleaded not guilty to all charges at his arraignment April 23, 2025. Kradle’s body was found at 3:30 a.m. July 28, 2024, on Route 78, less than a mile north of Mount Carroll’s city limits. Kradle was the victim of blunt force trauma, which a forensic pathologist ruled was the result of a vehicle/pedestrian crash. Herpstreith and a Carroll County dis-

the dispatcher who was with him. Ogle County Associate Judge Anthony Peska was appointed to the case in May 2025. On June 13, 2025, after hearing testimony from Illinois State Police special investigator Matthew Kipping, he ruled that probable cause exists and the case would continue toward trial. Herpstreith, with his attorney Joseph E. Nack, appeared Friday before Peska, when Nack argued for his motion filed on Aug. 7 asking that the two charges of reckless homicide and conduct be dismissed. Nack said prosecutors made “generic allegations” in the complaint against Herpstreith that lack the specificity the law requires to establish recklessness. The state alleges that Herpstreith was consuming alcohol and was inattentive while driving, “yet there’s no real evidence of any of that,” Nack said. Nack made largely that same argument in a motion he previously filed that asked the court to order prosecutors

• DEPUTY CASE Continued from page 17 to provide a more detailed explanation of those charges, but Peska denied it on July 10, saying each count had “sufficient specificity.” Attorney Charles Colburn of the Illinois State Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, who is prosecuting the case, referenced that ruling in his argument on Friday. The “court indicated that” the information included in the complaint was “sufficient,” Colburn said regarding that motion. “The state has certainly stated a cause of action,” Colburn said, adding that Herpstreith has “certainly been able to prepare a defense,” shown by his attorney hiring an expert “to attack the prosecution’s case.” Peska agreed with the state and denied the motion. “I do believe that these counts lay out
sufficient specificity,” Peska said. Nack also filed two motions asking that the court prohibit prosecutors from mentioning or introducing evidence related to Herpstreith’s alleged consumption of alcohol and a phone call made by the dispatcher who prosecutors say was with him the night of the incident. Peska heard arguments for those motions in a private room with attorneys and courtroom staff by agreement of both parties. Court records show he denied the defense’s motion related to alcohol and took the other motion under advisement. Nack’s motion related to alcohol argues that while prosecutors allege Herpstreith was drinking, they don’t allege that he was intoxicated. He argues that consuming alcohol doesn’t constitute recklessness, and evidence of such without evidence of intoxication is “inflammatory.” The motion claims that prosecutors
have no evidence that Herpstreith was intoxicated because, Nack argues, they did not charge him with additional counts such as aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. In the charging document for the reckless homicide and conduct counts, prosecutors allege Herpstreith “had been consuming alcoholic beverages continually since late afternoon the prior day,” among other things. Colburn filed a motion in response to Nack’s on Sept. 2 and argued that prosecutors should be able to discuss and present evidence of Herpstreith’s alleged alcohol consumption that night. Colburn argued that it is “probative of recklessness” and will show that Herpstreith consumed multiple alcoholic beverages in at least four locations in about six hours “leading to an inference of intoxication,” according to the motion. As for the other motion, the call it refers to was made to Carroll County dispatch about four hours before Kradle’s
body was found. During the call, the offduty dispatcher who was with Herpstreith said they’d been drinking and asked about the location of police in an attempt to avoid them. Nack’s motion argues that prosecutors intend to offer it as evidence to “support a finding that defendant consumed alcohol and therefore acted recklessly.” He argues that it’s irrelevant. However, Colburn’s motion, also filed Sept. 2, argues that the call should be shown as evidence to jurors at trial. “Evidence that a witness was drinking near the time of an event about which” they are testifying is relevant for jurors to assess that person’s ability to “perceive, recollect and communicate,” Colburn’s motion says. Peska set Herpstreith’s next hearing at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 29, to be held via Zoom through his Ogle County courtroom link. Peska has scheduled jury selection to begin Nov. 9 and the trial to start Nov. 16.

30 BEARS
Bears TE Kmet out for season with knee injury By MICHAL DWOJAK mdwojak@shawmedia.com Chicago head coach Ben Johnson met with reporters virtually Friday, a day after the Bears’ primetime win over the New England Patriots. Thursday night felt like a big win for the Bears despite it only being Week 7. Quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense shined in front of a national audience. Meanwhile, the defense and special teams redeemed themselves late in the game to hold onto the win. Now the Bears will have a “mini bye week” and won’t play again until they travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks on Nov. 2. Here are three of the most interesting things Johnson said Friday.
On Cole Kmet’s injury
Johnson confirmed that tight end Cole Kmet’s knee injury from Thursday night seemed to be the worst-case scenario. He called the injury “serious” and season-ending, and said the team will place Kmet on injured reserve. It’s a tough blow for Kmet and the Bears. Kmet is the Bears’ longest-tenured member after the team selected him in the second round in 2020. He settled nicely into a role for the Bears under Johnson, where he’s blocked well but was also a threat as a pass catcher. Kmet has caught 10 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown this season. Johnson called Kmet one of his favorite players and said his loss would impact the Bears on and off the field. “To be able to be in the same room
with him for the last year and a half, I’ve got so much respect for the player that he is, but also the person, the leader,” Johnson said. “He’s everything we want to be about here. He’s one of the glue guys. He’s one of the guys that I can count on, whether it’s a messaging standpoint or getting the pulse of the team. He’s going to be sorely missed. Really, he’s Chicago. He’s been here his whole life, and he’s a big part of our heartbeat. So, it stinks, it does. I hate it for him. I hate it for his teammates as well.” Now the Bears need to decide how they’ll fill Kmet’s role working alongside Colston Loveland. Rookie Sam Roush, whom the team drafted in the third round in April, should get most of Kmet’s snaps since he fits a similar mold to Kmet. Hayden Large is still on injured reserve, while Stephen Carlson and Qadir Ismail are also both options on the practice squad. Roush had a tough start to his NFL career. He’s had some dropped passes and missed blocks that have cost the Bears at times this year. But Johnson remained confident that Roush could fill in and learn from his tough start. “We’ve been very pleased with the improvement that he’s made over these first seven weeks, and so there’s a high likelihood that his rep count is going to go up as a result of what’s going on here,” Johnson said. “We’ll be able to see the player that we drafted. We had high hopes when we took him. Very smart player. He had some rookie hiccups early in the season like everybody does, and yet he learns. He doesn’t make the same
mistake twice, and I’m confident in what he’s going to be able to do for us here the back half of the season.”
On Caleb Williams’ development
Williams has shown plenty of growth this season. But it feels like he took it to another level in the last two games since returning from a hamstring injury. He looks much more comfortable in his second year of running Johnson’s offense. Williams has done a good job of not only making impressive throws but also taking what defenses give him. That’s allowed him to throw for 613 yards, a 75.4% completion rate (52 of 69), three touchdowns and no interceptions over the last two games. “He has certainly sped up,” Johnson said. “He’s gone through the progressions a little bit quicker in my viewpoint, which is a good thing.” But for as good as things have looked for Williams, Johnson thought there’s still meat on the bone. Johnson looked forward to sitting with Williams and going line-by-line over his play because he believes there are more plays out there. Williams has shown great growth so far. But he and the Bears know that he still has to take it up a few levels to reach his full potential.
On key moments from Thursday’s win
There were a few key plays from Thursday’s game that Johnson provided some clarity on. Johnson took accountability for Williams taking a 10-yard sack before kicker
Cairo Santos knocked in a career-high 58-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter. He said he should’ve done a better job of making it clear to Williams that the Bears didn’t want to lose yards on any play. There was also the final play before halftime where Patriots QB Drake Maye dropped a short pass to RB Rhamondre Stevenson, who then dodged members of the Bears secondary before scoring from 48 yards. There were multiple missed tackles and wrong paths taken in trying to stop Stevenson, and it made it a 20-14 Bears halftime lead instead of 20-7. “When that moment comes we have to be at our best, and we simply weren’t,” Johnson said. “We simply weren’t. So we got to continue to coach it better. And then at the end of the day, it’s still about rallying to the football and making sure in a case like that we find a way to get that ball carrier down.” Johnson also commented on the team’s failed trick play in the second quarter. Williams faked a handoff to running back D’Andre Swift and instead gave the ball to left guard Joe Thuney. But Thuney was in front of Williams, and the play was ruled an illegal handoff. “It’s gotta be backward,” Johnson said. “I mean, it’s as simple as that. So once again, we felt like it looked good over the course of - we’ve been practicing it now for a while. The initial version, we were actually putting the ball on the ground, which in hindsight might have been the way to go. So it’s one of those things, shooters shoot. We shot, we missed. So keep it moving.”

PREP FOOTBALL – CLASS 1A OPENING ROUND PLAYOFF: FULTON 70, MONMOUTH UNITED 15
By TERRY DUCKETT Shaw Local News Network correspondent The Fulton Steamers’ first home playoff football game in four years could not have gone much better. Hosting Monmouth United in a Saturday-afternoon Class 1A opening-round postseason matchup, the Steamers scored on their first series and the points kept coming fast and furious in a decisive 70-15 victory over the Red Storm. In its first playoff win since reaching the 1A quarterfinals in 2022, Fulton (7-3) scored touchdowns on all eight of its first-half possessions and ran a combined total of 18 offensive plays. Four of the Steamers’ scoring drives were one-play affairs as the hosts took command quickly, going up 35-0 after the first quarter and building a 56-7 halftime lead. “It was a very good day for us,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “We wanted to come out and play well, and we did that right from the get-go. I’m proud of the kids for doing that.” On a day when it set a school postseason record for most points scored, Fulton was fueled by its backfield duo of sophomore Wyatt Connor and junior Blaze Damhoff, who combined to rush for almost 300 yards. Connor churned out 179 yards and scored four touchdowns on 10 carries, while Damhoff needed only four carries to produce 113 yards and three TDs. “Our line also did a good job of blocking,” Lower said. “I’m proud of the way we were able to take advantage of what United was trying to do with their aggressive play on defense.” It was Connor who got the Steamers scoring started about three minutes into the first quarter with the first of his four TD runs, a 6-yard dash that capped a 54-yard, six-play opening series. “We wanted to come out, start well and set the tone early,” Connor said. “We did what we had to do, and we executed well.” Getting to be part of a home playoff game for the first time in their prep careers gave the Fulton players an extra shot of adrenaline. “We were all really excited for this game,” Connor said. “There was a lot of hype around this. We’re now trying to get a win every week, and we got a lot of momentum going today.”

Fulton’s Wyatt Connor (center) gets ready for contact as Monmouth United defender Bentlee Cook eyes the tackle. Connor picked up his third touchdown of the first quarter in the Class 1A opening-round playoff game Saturday in Fulton. Following Connor’s opening score, the Steamers needed only one play to find the end zone on their next three possessions. Damhoff tore off touchdown runs of 54 and 39 yards, and Connor had a 60-yard scoring romp. After those three scores, Fulton used two plays to cap the first quarter with a 56-yard Connor touchdown run and a 35-0 lead over a United club that was missing injured senior starting quarterback Kellen Boone. “We didn’t know about that until an hour and a half before the game,”
Lower said of Boone’s absence. “We dodged a bullet with him not getting to play. We understood how talented Boone is. He put a lot of fear into us with his athleticism and his ability to keep plays going.” The Red Storm (3-7) got on the board 45 seconds into the second quarter when sophomore Gabe Clark, starting in Boone’s place, connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Wyatt Stockdale. However, Fulton responded with touchdown runs by Connor, Damhoff and Teague Bray to build its 56-7 half-
time lead and prevent United from building any momentum. After Saturday’s hearty sampling of home cooking, the 11th-seeded Steamers will hit the road for next weekend’s first-round at Wyoming to take on No. 6 Stark County (7-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday. “We’re going to enjoy this for a little bit,” said Lower, “but we know we’ll have a tough task next week against a great football team and a great coach [Jade Noard], who’s been a friend of mine for a long time. We know he’ll have Stark County ready for us.”
