Volunteers pack lunches for this summer’s Let’s Feed Our Children summer meal program in Whiteside County. This past summer, the program provided nearly 50,000 meals to Whiteside County children through 17 distribution sites.

United Way of Whiteside County receives $10K grant from Quad Cities Community Foundation SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com United Way of Whiteside County has received a $10,000 grant through the Quad Cities Community Foundation’s 2026 Operations and Program Grants. The grant will support Let’s Feed Our Children, United Way’s summer meal program. During summer 2026, the program provided almost 50,000 grab-and-go meals to Whiteside County children through 17 distribution sites across the county. United Way of Whiteside County CEO Keri Olson said the funding will help sustain a program that has seen growing

need over the past several years. “The generosity of partners like the Quad Cities Community Foundation helps fuel our efforts to close the hunger gap created when school meals stop over the summer,” Olson said. “This funding will help us continue to provide local kids with summer meals.” Sue Hafkemeyer, president and CEO of the Quad Cities Community Foundation, said the grants are designed to strengthen organizations working to address local needs. “Strong communities depend on organizations that are close to the people, challenges, and opportunities that matter most,” Hafkemeyer said. “These

grants give local nonprofits the flexibility and resources to keep moving their work forward and help more people and neighborhoods thrive.” Community members who want to help feed local children next summer can donate to Let’s Feed Our Children at uwwhiteside.org or by calling United Way of Whiteside County at 815-6257973. United Way of Whiteside County unites a network of volunteers, donors, and nonprofits to address challenges and improve lives in Whiteside County. Based in Rock Falls, United Way funds and runs programs that meet local needs.

The only time some people eat sweet potatoes is at Thanksgiving in a casserole laden with butter, brown sugar and marshmallows. That’s unfortunate because sweet potatoes already are naturally sweet, and they provide excellent nutrition if you eat them in their simplest form. They are low in fat and calories and provide a good amount of fiber. They are a good source of potassium, which we need to regulate fluids in our body and support healthy blood pressure. They also are a good source of vitamin A, which is important for our vision and which helps support our immune system. Sweet potatoes are versatile. They can be baked, roasted or boiled. A baked sweet potato makes

BEYOND TRIM Sherry DeWalt a great simple side dish, but I have topped a baked sweet potato with seasoned black beans for a savory vegetarian meal and eaten it with a sliced banana and peanut butter for breakfast. They make a great addition to soups, stews and chilis, as well as enchiladas, tacos and casseroles. I’ve even baked a chocolate cake using sweet potatoes. It was delicious, just not something I would eat on a regular basis. It takes about 45-50 minutes to

Recipe: • 1 large sweet potato • 1 Tbs. cooking oil (I prefer olive or avocado oil) • Pinch of salt (optional) Wash the sweet potato and leave the skin on. Slice crosswise into ¼ inch rounds. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sweet potatoes in an even layer. Sprinkle

with salt (if using) and cover with the lid. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the underside is golden brown. Flip the slices and cover again. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until brown on both sides and tender. Serve. Did you know that sweet potatoes come in different colors? In addition to the common orange variety, you can find them with white, red and yellow flesh and even purple sweet potatoes, which are thought to be much higher in antioxidants. Whatever the color, make sure to add some sweet potatoes to your shopping list and enjoy.

bake a whole sweet potato; 30 minutes or more for roasting cut-up potatoes. If you’d like to get them on the table faster, you might enjoy this stovetop preparation. When you slice the potato into thin rounds and sauté them in a single layer with the lid on to trap the steam, you can have sweet potatoes ready in under 10 minutes.

FULTON’S GLIMPSES OF THE PAST: OCT. 20 • Oct. 19, 1966 • Miss Linda VanZuiden reigned as Queen of Homecoming festivities at Fulton Community High School. Her escort was Dale Ratcliff. Members of the Homecoming Queen’s court were: Seniors, Gloria Temple and Bill Brinkman; Juniors, Lois Venhuizen and Dan Sikkema; Sophomores, Becky Sikkema and Steve Sanders; and Freshmen, Roxanne Cossman and Andy Widener. • Chief of Police Vernon Krahn has obtained $50 in cash from a group of about 15 Fulton teenagers who admitted damaging picnic tables and playground equipment at the Fulton School Park. Money was collected by several of the youths after police learned the identity of some of the vandals and threatened prosecution of the entire group unless they provided money to pay for the damage.

• John Graham and Linda Kay, representing the Fulton high school student council, proposed to the River Bend School Board several ways they felt the increasing drinking problem during school dances could be curtailed. The council suggested that all dances be closed to everyone except high school students and their guests. Anyone caught drinking would be escorted out of the building and not allowed to attend any future dances. Two police officers would be required at each dance.

• Oct. 22, 1986 • Although the County School Reorganization committee recommended no consolidations of school districts in Whiteside County, there still is a possibility that the River Bend and Thomson districts may work out some joint operations. This became evident when 50 years the River Bend board formed a committee to • Oct. 20, 1976 meet with the Thomson school board to • In photo is a view of the Kiwanis Park on discuss possibilities. • Oct. 16, 1996 • About midway through the Fresh-Soph football game, while the River Bend Athletic Boosters were cooking pork chops in the LP gas-powered grill, workers and fans heard a pop and very soon the entire grill was enveloped in flames and threatening the side of the wooden structure nearby. No one was injured in the fire, except the hands of one worker were slightly burned when he reached for a fire extinguisher. • The council heard the report that the costs of repairing the city’s sewer treatment plant have increased. Preliminary engineer’s estimates stated the project could be accomplished for $286,000. That now appears to be very low because new estimates state the task could cost $356,000. The city received a grant earlier in the year for $100,000 for the replacement of the two-story high filtering system at the sewer treatment plant.

• Oct. 18, 2006 • Fulton Chamber of Commerce held a

ribbon cutting ceremony for Interiors, etc. The business has moved two doors up to a completely remodeled building that features an exposed brick wall, refinished hardwood floors, nß∑ew windows, track lighting and much more. In the photo Patti Housenga, Lynne Loerop, Myra Norman, owner, Linda Hollis, Shirl Wierenga-Huber, Sue Mannix and Mayor Howard Van Zuiden. • Residents continue the countdown with only 29 days left to Nov. 17, the opening of the South bridge. Many accidents on the bridge have created delays for motorists crossing the bridge. A 10-vehicle accident on an icy bridge delayed many for more than an hour while the vehicles were cleared from the bridge.

10 years

• Oct. 19, 2016 • The City of Fulton hosted a visit with the Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Louis Piet and his wife, Dyonne. The focus of the trip to Fulton was on economic development so business leaders were invited to a luncheon at Krumpets held in their honor.

22 PREP FOOTBALL: EASTLAN-PEARL CITY 49, MORRISON 10

Eastland-Pearl City rolls to win at Morrison, seals playoff bid By TERRY DUCKETT

Shaw Local News Network correspondent The expansion of the IHSA state football playoffs gave many more Week 9 matchups an even greater importance than in the past. One of those matchups took place Friday night at Morrison’s Bud Cole Field, where the Morrison Mustangs welcomed Eastland-Pearl City to wrap up Northwest Upstate Illini Conference play. Coming in with three wins and looking to clinch an at-large playoff berth, the Wildcatz answered the bell and punched their postseason ticket in convincing fashion with a 49-10 victory on a chilly evening. Finishing sixth in the eight-team NUIC at 2-5, Eastland-Pearl City more importantly assured itself of playing beyond Friday by wrapping up the regular season at 4-5. “I think we would’ve had the same approach no matter what. Even if we were coming in 0-8, we would fight to the end,” EPC junior quarterback Deaken Hofmaster said. “We have the same approach in practice. We came up

with a good game plan, and it was good that we executed it. “We’ve been battle-tested all year, and now we get to live to fight another week.” Although denied a win on its Senior Night, Morrison (2-7, 1-6 NUIC) feels good about its chances of living to fight another week. “Every projection I’ve seen has us getting in, especially with our schedule in the NUIC and the number of our opponents’ wins [44 after Friday’s game],” Morrison coach Nate Vandermyde said. “Especially with us scheduling Wilmington [in Week 2], I think that gives us a good chance to be in.” Down 36-0 at halftime, the Mustangs came out with a renewed focus for the second half behind the efforts of junior quarterback Charlie Pruis (17 of 34 passing for 144 yards; 184 total yards) and senior wide receiver Josh McDearmon (65 yards on seven receptions; 91 total yards). Morrison got to the EPC five-yard line after taking the second-half kickoff, but ended up turning the ball over on downs with 5:23 left in the third

quarter. An Eli Modglin fumble recovery then led to a 25-yard McDearmon field goal. “Our offensive line was getting holes. We were getting more gashes in the run game and started completing more passes,” Vandermyde said. “It felt good to be able to move the ball more in the second half.” The Mustangs would eventually find the end zone in the final minute of play on a 36-yard touchdown run by Pruis, but by that time the Wildcatz had opened up a 49-3 lead on a 60-yard Parker Allen TD run and Hofmaster’s 17-yard scoring pass to Jackson Carstens. “We wanted to hopefully go into the playoffs on the right foot [with a win],” said Vandermyde, “but this is still a good feeling to have. We can build off of this.” While Morrison finished strong, EPC set the tone from the outset behind a strong performance from Hofmaster. Completing 10 of 15 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns in addition to rushing for 95 yards and two TDs on four carries, the junior stand-

out led the Wildcatz to touchdowns on all five of their first-half possessions. In the first quarter, Hofmaster scored on runs of six and 71 yards, sandwiched around a six-yard TD run by Sawyer Williams (127 total yards) to put EPC up 22-0 after one. He then hooked up with Andrew Holder and Brycen Voegeli for second-quarter touchdown passes. “We just need to do a better job of taking care of the football; that’s one thing we need to clean up before the playoffs,” Hofmaster said. “We’re going to be ready for next week no matter what.” Eastland-Pearl City coach Jared McNutt feels his club can take some teams by surprise once the postseason fray begins in a week’s time. “I feel like our record doesn’t tell the whole story about our team,” he said. “We’ve lost four games this year by a touchdown or less, and that’s been kind of rough on the guys. It was nice to come out firing on all cylinders tonight, and to take care of business. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was close to it. The guys stepped up and made plays when we needed them to.”
