Weather creates havoc in the area

A rolled-over FedEx truck and multiple traffic incidents kept area police busy last week.

A range of struggles faced drivers Dec. 29-30 as heavy snow fell across the Sauk Valley, part of a winter storm meteorologists forecasted would feature frozen precipitation and cause dangerous conditions.

Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties wereunder a National Weather Service winter storm warning until last Wednesday.

Snow began falling in Whiteside County around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, quickly limiting visibility to less than half a mile andaccumulating on roads.

Around 2:55 p.m., a FedEx truck delivering packages on the northwest side of Sterling took the curve on West Science Ridge and McCue roads too fast, causing it to leave the road and roll into the ditch.

No injuries to the truck’s driver were reported, and fire crews cleaned a minor fuel spill, according toemergency radio communications.

Less than an hour later, emergency responders managed a slew of calls reporting minor vehicle collisions and vehicles that had left the road, ending up in ditches or on highway medians.

As the sun’s light fell, so, too, did the snow.

By 5 p.m., emergency responders worked through a stack of reports of vehicles failing to make it up the First Avenue hill in Sterling, their tires hampered by the slippery pavement beneath the wet snow.

“If anyone wants to come help push, we could use it,” an officer said over the radio.

After pushing out one mini van from a curb of snow on the street, a pair of officers watched as it again spun its tires attempting to turn onto Second Street.

“Is it really stuck again?” an officer asked over the radio, before pushing the van forward through the intersection.

As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, around 3 inches of snow had fallen in southern Carroll and northern Whiteside counties, according to the National Weather Service’s Quad Cities location.

Lee and Ogle counties saw less snow,

with just over 2 inches reported by the same time.

All four counties were reporting light snow and an increased visibility of three-quarters of a mile.

Winds, coming from the southeast, were steady in the high teens. Gusts of 26 mph were reported in Savanna and Sterling, while gusts of 29 mph were reported in Rochelle.

The freezing rain also weighed down tree branches and utility lines.

And on New Year’s Day, another storm system hit the area, this time bringing a mixture of sleet, freezing rain, and snow.

Snow emergencies were declared throughout the area so crews could focus on ice and snow removal, with many remaining active throughout the weekend.

Dense fog on the weekend also added to the week’s wild weather, though it brought about an unusual ice phenomenon called hoar frost, or white ice crystals attached to outdoor objects.

Norine Carney to celebrate 95th birthday

Norine M. Carney of Morrison will celebrate her 95th birthday Jan. 9, 2021.

Norine was born on Jan. 9, 1926, in the “Swede Town” area of Prophetstown. She married William “Bill” Carney on Feb. 4, 1950, in Springfield.

Norine raised three children and worked as a licensed practical nurse in the patient care and the obstetrics departments at Morrison Community Hospital. She worked there for more than 50 years until she retired in 2003.

It takes awareness and action to make positive change. Human trafficking continues to devastate our communities and the world. With your commitment and willingness, we can change the future for many and fight for the freedom of millions. It’s time to act.

Every four seconds, another person has been trapped and forced into human trafficking somewhere in the world or your community. Human trafficking claims many and often goes unnoticed. It’s estimated that there are over 40 million people in modern-day slavery today. Yes, human trafficking is slavery; people are being forced to do acts against their will. Of that 40 million, 75 percent are being exploited for sex, and of that, about half are children.

Human trafficking is a $150 billion per year business globally. Without acknowledging and addressing this dire issue, it will continue to wreak havoc in our communities and remain a global crisis.

With the network and influence of Rotary International, our goal is to accumulate increase awareness around this issue. To do this, we need your help. You can begin by attending meetings and learning more about human trafficking, how it happens, and its prevalence in our cities and communities. OBITUARIES ALLAN E. HUIZENGA STOUGHTON, Wis. – Allan E. Huizenga, age 76, died peacefully on Friday, December 18, 2020 at UW Hospital, Madison.

He was born September 26, 1944 in Morrison, to Marvin and Phyllis (Temple) Huizenga. He was a graduate of Morrison High School, Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, and Western Theological Seminary. In 1967, he married June Houtsma.

He served 2 years in the US Army, was a social caseworker for 9 years, and owned Words of Hope, a Christian bookstore in Madison for 26 years. Al loved studying the Bible and worshipping the Lord. He was friendly and jovial and enjoyed visiting the sick and elderly. He was an enthusiastic fan of University of Illinois basketball. He was passionate about horseshoe pitching and competed in leagues, tournaments and the annual world tournament, held in locations across the US and Canada.

Allan is survived by his wife, June; brother, Loren; sisters, Nancy Bielema and Marcia (Michael) Blean; sister-in-law, Mert DeVos; and 12 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers-inlaw and a sister-in-law, Will Bielema, Alice and Palmer McKinzie, and Herm De Vos and nephew Norm McKinzie.

A memorial service for immediate fam-

ily will be held Sunday, January 10, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Fulton Church, Edgerton, Wisconsin. The service will be streamed at www.fultonchurch.org. Memorials will be donated to Fulton Church and horseshoe pitching organizations.

DOLORES ‘DEE’ SMITH NAPERVILLE – Dolores “Dee” Smith, age 82, formerly of Prophetstown, passed away on December 25, 2020 at St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville.

She was born Feb. 17, 1938 in Michigan. Dee moved to Prophetstown, where she worked as a CNA at Winning Wheels. There, she meant her good friend Jim, and they lived together in Prophetstown and Sterling.

Dee is survived by her sister, Mary Ann (James) Jackson’ and several nieces and nephews. Dee is also survived by her extended family, Barb and Lee, Debbie, Ed, Kristen and Jimmy, Laura, Jeff, Karly and Andy. She also leaves many special friends, Esther and Jim, Vicky and Judy.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Harriett Sherwood; her good friend James Van Huis; and several faithful animals.

Dee dedicated her life to serving others. She loved to decorate for every holiday and brought joy to so many people.

She attended the First Church of the Nazarene where she gave her heart to Christ and volunteered at Helping Hands.

Her final words were “God bless all those I love and leave behind. Also, thanks for my favorite place to be besides church - the Rock Falls library.”

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

DOROTHY M. JOHNSON MORRISON – Dorothy M. Johnson, 81, of Pleasant View Home in Morrison, died December 27, 2020 at Pleasant View.

There will be a private family visitation and funeral service at Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, with Mr. Ken Renkes officiating. The Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

A memorial to the American Cancer Society has been established. Dorothy was born December 16, 1939, in Fulton, to Peter and Florence (Geerts) VanderVinne. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools, and was a graduate of Morrison High School. On Feb. 6, 1959 she married David Vanderlaan in Fulton,

She later married Neil B. Johnson on Dec. 31, 1997 in Mt. Carroll. Neil died on Oct. 27, 2012. Dorothy was first employed

by Vend-O-Mack in Morrison, and later

by Climco Coils in Morrison. She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church.

Dorothy liked outdoor activities including yard work, flower gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, Dawn (Scott) Meurs of Morrison; three sons, Dale (Michelle) Vanderlaan of Oak Park, Doug (Renee) Vanderlaan of Morrison and Darwin (Lisa) Vanderlaan of Morrison; a stepdaughter, Audra Johnson of Madison, Wisconsin; a stepson, Wade (Cindy) Johnson of Rockford; eight grandchildren, Stacy (Elliot) Worth, Cassandra (Maxwell Leib) Meurs, Grant and Beau Vanderlaan, Hanah (Bobby) Mathius, Benjamin Vanderlaan, Samantha (Nick) Volckmann and Cody Vanderlaan; two stepgrandchildren, Taylor and Julie Johnson; and one sister, Ruth Balk of Pella, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; one granddaughter, Amanda Conerly; three sisters, Pauline Pruis, Frances Houzenga and Louise Bielema; and one brother, Maurice VanderVinne.

Microgreens and more at Birdie & the Bees Farm

A Port Byron couple with a mission to feed, nourish, and educate will be making their debut at the Port Byron Farmers’ Market at River Valley District Library this month. Jordan Bohall and Elise Frost say their road to a permaculture life means sharing what they grow and harvest in their own community.

Birdie & the Bees is a small family farm dedicated to producing the best possible artisanal microgreens, raw honey from a small apiary, beeswax candles, and herbal infusions. The couple also plan to offer their produce to local restaurants wanting the freshest possible food to serve their families and customers.

“We believe that by working outside of the industrial agriculture systems, we’re able to provide our community with the fresh and nutritious food that they deserve at prices rivaling even the largest operations,” said Jordan.

According to Jordan, microgreens (not to be confused with sprouts)

are a super delicious superfood that add flavorful punches to any meal, or simply as a meal all on their own. They go from seed to sprout in about ten days, looking like little forests in the drip trays. The vegetable seedlings provide key nutrients to any meal as well as interesting flavors, textures, and colors. Varieties offered by Jordan include a spicy salad mix, Rambo radish, dun peas, wheatgrass, and sunflowers.

The couple also extract raw honey from their beehives using the Flow Hive method, which allows the bees to remain undisturbed as littles as possible. “We believe this allows our little workers to produce the best honey as possible,” Jordan noted. The benefits of eating raw honey include reducing allergies.

At the farm, Jordan grows the microgreens and cares for the bees.

Elise creates their beeswax candles and herbal infusions. Their smallscale farming ambitions combines the couple’s passion to offer healthy alternatives in their community.

Elise is a bodywork and movement professional serving the Quad Cities through her business, Labyrinth Integrated Movement and Bodyworks. She has an MA in Contemporary Dance from the University of Illinois. The couple are also the proud parents of two adopted “doggos”Birdie, a pit/greyhound mix, and Oliver, an American Bully Pitbull.

Jordan and Elise envision a hyper-local community network, meaning a focus on the population of a small community or geographical area. They’ve added an educational component to their website and Facebook page, with tutorials on how to grow and harvest microgreens, plus juice and meal recipes, the benefits of microgreens, and other healthy living suggestions.

“As we build awareness of all the amazing health benefits of microgreens, local raw honey, and herbal infusions, we plan to expand our operations to meet the needs of our customers and our supported restaurants. We look to incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables from our expanding market garden as we continue to grow that space as well as increase the number of our beehives,” said Jordan.

The next Port Byron Farmers’ Winter Market is on Sunday, Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the library, 214 S. BHRC scheduling free air quality assessments Blackhawk Hills Regional Council (BHRC) is scheduling free Indoor Air Quality Assessments for local businesses, nonprofits, libraries, and municipalities in Carroll, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, and Whiteside counties.

In addition to economic development and natural resources planning, BHRC was awarded grant funding to assist the region with COVID19 recovery.

Indoor spaces that lack ventilation pose a higher risk of COVID-19 transmission than do well-ventilated spaces. BHRC staff have been trained to conduct IAQ Assessments and provide recommendations that can increase air quality in a specific room or building. The data collected from all IAQ Assessments are for business eyes only; individual results are private and not shared. The goal of these assessments is to help Northwest Illinois establishments better understand certain environmental health risks and be informed of strategies to improve air quality indoors. This testing has application beyond the scope of pandemic response and can increase comfort for customers and citizens alike.

First babies of the year 60 Years January 5, 1961

Angela Rae Wierenga was the first baby born in 1961. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Carl Wierenga. She weighed eight pounds and was 20 and one-half inches tall. She arrived at 2:20 a.m. New Year’s Day. The Ceramic Shop, operated by Inez Gusse and Naomi Riceman, has opened its doors as a new business located on Fourth Street in the Utz building between the Fulton Paint and Paper Store and Amman’s Royal Blue Store.

50 Years January 6, 1971

Mr. and Mrs. James Zuidema are the parents of the first baby born in 1971. Craig Allen was born at 1:56 p.m. January 1 at Morrison Community Hospital. He weighed-in at eight pounds. He was taken home in a new modern convenience, a disposable baby “basket” for transporting.

City Council met with a number of problems. First on the agenda was a presentation by Commonwealth Edison for improved street lighting for Fulton. The company’s proposal promises a 75 percent improvement in street lighting by substituting mercury vapor lighting for incandescent lighting.

40 Years January 7, 1981

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Houzenga are the parents of the first baby born in 1981. Andrew J. Houzenga, was born on January 2 at 1:38 p.m. at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, and weighed 9 lbs. 9 ozs. and was 21 inches long.

Gaylord and Sharon Rigg are announcing the opening of G & S Motors at 1501 Tenth Avenue. They will feature the finest used cars and provide complete automotive service. Henry Bielema is salesman and Don Vander Vinne is service manager.

January 2, 1991

Fulton City Council in special session approved an application for a grant in the amount of $16,000 for the development of a bike trail through Fulton. Estimation of the cost of the city’s section of the Great River Trail is $32,000, and the City of Fulton must pay half of the final cost.

Army Saergent Tim Kraft has been deployed to the Middle East with American military forces participating in Operation Desert Shield. He is a 1983 graduate of Fulton.

20 Years January 3, 2001

Records were broken during December, for the cold and amount of snow received. The month was the second coldest according to records that have been kept since 1879. Records show that December was the fourth snowiest month since 1887. Snowfall will go into the books as 25.6 inches for this area in December.

A Fulton police officer received minor injuries in a chase and the car he was driving received $10,000 damage when a pickup truck he was trying to stop struck him. It all started with a chase in Thomson, Illinois and ending up in Sabula, Iowa.

10 Years January 5, 2011

River Bend Athletic Director Derek Germann is recewived a check from Roxanne Fish, Athletic Booster President, to cover expenses for the refinishing of the Stan Borgman Court. This project was funded by the Athletic Boosters with the support of local businesses.

Albany Lions Club donated $500 to the Albany Food Pantry. Accepting check for the pantry are Jackie Smith, Mary Okransinski and Maxine Faley. The Lions also donated a check for $300 to the Albany Park Board. Accepting check for the Park Board are Gus Sims and Jerry Anglese.
