Chamber begins Gift Check Program

The Morrison Chamber has created and is launching a new Chamber Bucks program to actively respond to the significant impact small businesses are experiencing during this unprecedented time.

The Chamber knows this is an uncertain time for small business owners and hopes this effort brings awareness to that fact and make things a little bit better for our business community.

The Chamber provides is a place for people to see how they can support Morrison businesses while practicing social distancing via Morrison Chamber Gift Check purchases. Daily and weekly cash flow for small businesses is a big part of keeping the doors open. Gift checks can play a huge role in maintaining cash flow and helping the small business community get through.

Odell Library News, January Updates

By Anne Frame Two young women, Krysta Mapes and Gillian Larson, have been busy updating the Young Adult section of the library during COVID-19 (See article on page 5).

Not only have they utilized the $1,000 from the Go Fund Me and donations of the Friends’ Drive this past late fall, they have also totally rearranged the Young Adult section shelving and furniture.

Krysta states, “This section of the library had been somewhat neglected, so this fund drive allowed us to update the Young Adult section with 79 new books!”

“We also wanted to give the teens more room so we moved shelving, tables and chairs to give the Young Adults a space of their own,” added Gillian.Both agreed quite enthusiastically they have more plans for this area.

Krysta has worked at Odell for seven years and Gillian for five. They both agree they love both the work environment and their co-workers. “It has been a great way to meet the community

and to make new friends,” said Gillian.

When asked what they wanted to see happen yet, they stated emphatically new carpet, new furniture for the Young Adults, new flooring in the children’s section, a place for coffee for moms who

bring their children in to play in the kids’ kitchen, plus an update in technology.

Both Krysta and Gillian’s youth, vitality and creativity are wonderful assets to the Odell Public Library!

Galen Johnson and Deb VanderLeest were married at the First United Methodist Church in Lyndon on Jan. 15, 1971.

They have two children, Chris (Lisa) Johnson of Sterling and Andrea (Ryan) Pritchard of Moline.

They also have five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Regina Keith to mark 100th birthday Jan. 20

Regina Keith will celebrate her 100th birthday with a card shower.

Regina was born on Jan. 20, 1921 in Whiteside County.

She married Edward Keith in December 1942 and together they raised five children. Eddie passed away in 2004.

Her children are the late Dora Mae (Roger) Wunderlin, LaVerne (Sandi) Keith, Gary (Margaret) Keith, Diane O’Brien (Ben) and Bob (Carla) Keith. She has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who adore her.

Regina resides at Windsor Manor and is a member of St. Mary’s Church in Morrison.

MercyOne welcomes back Cardiologist Ali Albaghdadi MercyOne Clinton Medical Center is pleased to announce and welcome back interventional cardiologist Ali Albaghdadi, MD, effective Jan. 1.

Albaghdadi is board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease and internal medicine.

He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University in Chicago, and his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine/Chicago Medical School.

He is fellowship-trained in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular medicine from the University

of Iowa and in heart failure from Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. Ali completed his residency in internal medicine at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

Prior to his most recent position as a staff physician in the department of cardiology at Monroe Clinic in Monroe, Wisconsin, he was a staff physician in the department of cardiology at Medical Associates in Clinton.

He served as director of Medical Associates Outpatient Heart Center (2018), director of cardiac rehabil-

itation services (2013 – 2018) and director of cardiovascular services and cardiac catheterization laboratory (2010 – 2013), both at MercyOne Clinton.

Whiteside announces 13 new COVID-19 cases

eingles@shawmedia.com Whiteside County announced 13 new COVID-19 cases and five recoveries on Sunday.

The new cases involve one person under 20, two in their 20s, one in their 40s, five in their 50s, three in their 60s and one in their 70s.

Lee, Ogle and Carroll counties did not report updated statistics on Sunday.

Whiteside County has had 5,217 cases, 4,638 recoveries and 133 deaths. Lee County has had 2,641 cases, 2,182 recoveries and 53 deaths.

Ogle County has had 4,313 cases, 3,642 recoveries and 55 deaths. Carroll County has had 1,357 cases, 1,305 recoveries and 30 deaths.

The North region (Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, Jo Daviess, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago counties) has seen 11 consecutive

days under the 12% positivity rate.

The region’s positivity rate decreased to 10.1%.

Currently, 25% of medical/surgical beds are available and 21.2% of ICU beds.

The region has 11 consecutive days above the

20% threshold for ICU bed availability, and 11 consecutive days above the 20% threshold for medical/surgical bed availability.

Within this region, DeKalb County’s positivity rate decreased to 12.8%, Lee County’s rate increased slightly to 3.2%, and Whiteside County’s rate decreased to 9.7%.

Finally, within this region, there are 34 available, staffed ICU beds out of 179 total, and 255 ventilators out of 343 available.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 4,711 new cases Sunday as well as 81 deaths. There have been 1,028,750 cases and 17,574 deaths statewide.

Sterling has had 16,073 tests and 1,918 cases.

Rock Falls has had 7,729 tests and 1,125 cases.

Dixon has had 29,236 tests and 1,933 cases.

Rochelle has had 9,388 tests and 1,410 cases.

ODELL LIBRARY - MORRISON

Odell Public Library has a wonderful young adult reading section. However, in early 2020, we noticed that there was a lack of current realistic fictional stories that could enlighten young patrons on racial, political and identity issues.

We researched recent publications and compiled a long list of diverse books our youth could explore.

These new books at Odell deal with themes such as racial identity and inequality, various marginalized religions, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQ representation.

In order to properly educate our youth on what is happening in our world, Odell as a library needed to provide fictional stories with representative characters and inclusive concepts.

It is extraordinarily important for these groups of individuals to have voices; not just in the news and visual media outlets, but in our books.

Literary characters can be just as powerful and impactful to children as living role models, and can provide a friend to those who need one.

We want to provide a well-rounded section with books every young adult can relate to and learn from. With the money that Friends of Odell has generously raised, Odell purchased 246 items so far, 79 of those titles being for our young adult section.

For the past few years, we have slowly been making improvements throughout Odell to make

the space more friendly for all age groups. We started with the youngest group of children coming into the library and have been working our way up and we have finally reached our young adult section.

With the 79 new titles and a new location for the young adult section, a space has been created to come and hangout (after things open back up, of course).

Though there are more improvements that we hope to see in our library this is a good start to improve the variety of reading material and space for our young adults.

To come up with the 79 new titles, we received

input from young adults within our community and from our very own young adults at Odell.

With their input, we have a variety of new titles coming to Odell.

These titles will cover themes that are relevant to the experiences that teens are having to face in today’s society.

There will also be titles that will be graphic novels (some of these being manga). Within these graphic novels we have included classic adaptations such as, The Odyssey, Wuthering Heights, and Anne Frank’s Diary.

We are so excited to see all of these new editions to our library collection and know that there will be something for any young adult reader within these new titles.

Beginning in 2021, Odell Public Library will be releasing an original podcast, entitled Between the Stacks!

This podcast is hosted by librarians Emily Lenore, Gillian Larson, and Krysta Mapes. We will be discussing new releases, spotlight library sections, talk with your favorite Odell librarians, and everything going on at the library.

We will also be covering events in Morrison and talking with leaders in the community.

CRP general signup now until Feb. 12 Agricultural producers and private landowners interested in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) can sign up for the popular program beginning on Jan. 4 until Feb. 12. The competitive program, administered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), provides annual rental payments for land devoted to conservation purposes.

“This signup for the Conservation Reserve Program gives producers and landowners an opportunity to enroll for the first time or continue their participation for another term,” FSA Illinois State Executive Director, William Graff said. “This program encourages conservation on sensitive lands or low-yielding acres, which provides tremendous benefits for stewardship of our natural resources and wildlife.”

Through CRP, farmers and ranchers establish long-term, resource-conserving plant species, such as approved grasses or trees, to control soil erosion, improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitat on cropland. Farmers and ranchers who participate in CRP help provide numerous benefits to their local region and the nation’s environment

and economy. CRP general signup is held annually and is competitive; general signup includes increased opportunities for wildlife habitat enrollment through the State Acres For Wildlife Enhancement (SAFE) initiative.

New cropland offered in the program must have been planted for four out of six crop years from 2012 to 2017. Additionally, producers with land already enrolled but expiring on Sept. 30, can re-enroll this year.

The acreage offered by producers and landowners is evaluated competitively; accepted offers will begin Oct. 1.

The program marked its 35-year anniversary in December 2020. Program successes include: Preventing more than 9 billion tons of soil from eroding, which is enough soil to fill 600 million dump trucks.

Reducing nitrogen and phosphorous runoff relative to annually tilled cropland by 95% and 85%, respectively.

Sequestering an annual average of 49 million tons of greenhouse gases, equal to taking 9 million cars off the road.

Creating more than 3 million acres of restored wetlands while protecting more than 175,000 stream miles with riparian forest and grass buffers, which is enough to go around the world seven times.

Benefiting bees and other pollinators and increasing populations of ducks, pheasants, turkey, bobwhite quail, prairie chickens, grasshopper sparrows, and many other birds.

All USDA Service Centers are open for business, including those that restrict in-person visits or require appointments. All Service Center visitors wishing to conduct business with FSA, Natural Resources Conservation Service or any other Service Center agency should call ahead and schedule an appointment.

Service Centers that are open for appointments will pre-screen visitors based on health concerns or recent travel, and visitors must adhere to social distancing guidelines. Visitors are also required to wear a face covering during their appointment. Our program delivery staff will continue to work with our producers by phone, email, and using online tools.

IN BRIEF Anhydrous safety training now available online The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) is offering online training to help growers and grower farm operators who handle anhydrous ammonia fulfill a new state safety certification requirement. IDOA began offering the free online training Jan. 1.

Illinois Farm Bureau worked with IDOA to offer online training on the IDOA website at no cost to growers or grower farm operators. IFB launched an information campaign with county Farm Bureaus to raise awareness of the new safety training requirement and available online training.

Individuals may access the training program by a link posted on IDOA’s homepage. They will be directed to a portal with step-by-step instructions to create a user account and view the training.

By completing the training, growers and grower farm operators will be certified to understand ammonia properties, safe operating practices, appropriate actions needed in cases of a leak or emergency, transportation safety and the necessary personal protective equipment and first aid.

OBITUARIES AUDREY STUART MORRISON – Audrey Stuart, 87, of Morrison, died Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center, in Clinton, Iowa.

There will be a private visitation and funeral service at the Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, with Rev. Calvin Haines, Jr. of Morrison United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

A memorial to the Morrison United Methodist Church has been established.

Audrey was born Oct. 7, 1933 in Morrison to Edward and Anna (Beswick) Wells. She was educated in the Greenwood School in rural Whiteside County, and was a graduate of Morrison High School. On Feb. 27, 1953 she married Harvey W. Stuart in Fairhaven; he died March 25, 2001.

Audrey lived her entire life on her parents’ farm, later farming alongside her husband, Harvey, and raising their two sons. She was a member of the Morrison United Methodist Church. Audrey loved animals, especially her cats and her beloved dog, Cassie. She enjoyed being outdoors, planting flowers and helping on the farm.

Survivors include one son, Randy (Pat) Stuart of Gainesville, Florida; and a lifelong dear friend, Donna Bierman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey and one son, David Stuart.

DOLORES ‘DEE’ SMITH NAPERVILLE – Dolores “Dee” Smith, age 82, formerly of Prophetstown, passed away on December 26, 2020 at St. Patrick’s Residence in Naperville.

She was born Feb. 17, 1938 in Michigan. Dee moved to Prophetstown, where she worked as a CNA at Winning Wheels.

There, she meant her good friend Jim, and they lived together in Prophetstown and Sterling.

Dee is survived by her sister, Mary Ann (James) Jackson’ and several nieces and nephews. Dee is also survived by her extended family, Barb and Lee, Debbie, Ed, Kristen and Jimmy, Laura, Jeff, Karly and Andy. She also leaves many special friends, Esther and Jim, Vicky

and Judy.

Dee was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Harriett Sherwood; her good friend James Van Huis; and several faithful animals.

Dee dedicated her life to serving others. She loved to decorate for every holiday and brought joy to so many people. She attended the First Church of the Nazarene where she gave her heart to Christ and volunteered at Helping Hands.

Her final words were “God bless all those I love and leave behind. Also, thanks for my favorite place to be besides church - the Rock Falls library.”

Cremation rites have been accorded. rrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.

DOROTHY M. JOHNSON MORRISON – Dorothy M. Johnson, 81, of Pleasant View Home in Morrison, died December 27, 2020 at Pleasant View.

Dorothy was born Dec. 16, 1939, in Fulton, to Peter and Florence (Geerts) VanderVinne. She was educated in the rural Whiteside County grade schools, and was a graduate of Morrison High School.

On Feb. 6, 1959 she married David Vanderlaan in Fulton. She later married Neil B. Johnson on Dec. 31, 1997 in Mt. Carroll. Neil died on Oct. 27, 2012. Dorothy was first employed by Vend-O-Mack in Morrison, and later by Climco Coils in Morrison.

She was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church. Dorothy liked outdoor activities including yard work, flower gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include one daughter, Dawn (Scott) Meurs of Morrison; three sons, Dale (Michelle) Vanderlaan of Oak Park, Doug (Renee) Vanderlaan of Morrison and Darwin (Lisa) Vanderlaan of Morrison; a stepdaughter, Audra Johnson of Madison, Wisconsin; a stepson, Wade (Cindy) Johnson of Rockford; eight

grandchildren, Stacy (Elliot) Worth, Cassandra (Maxwell Leib) Meurs, Grant and Beau Vanderlaan, Hanah (Bobby) Mathius, Benjamin Vanderlaan, Samantha (Nick) Volckmann and Cody Vanderlaan; two stepgrandchildren, Taylor and Julie Johnson; and one sister, Ruth Balk of Pella, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; one granddaughter, Amanda Conerly; three sisters, Pauline Pruis, Frances Houzenga and Louise Bielema; and one brother, Maurice VanderVinne.

He enjoyed his time outside working on the lawn, taking his grandchildren fishing and helping his neighbors.

George is survived by his wife Bonnie; children, Jeremy of Princeville, IL, and Brooke of Hillsdale; and grandchildren, Kyle, Brandie, Jeremiah, Luke, Matthew, Logan, Eli and Bane.

Robert was born January 29, 1959 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Marvin and Carol (Matheny) Large.

He graduated from Erie High School in 1978 and married Ruby Hazel Ballard at the Erie Nazarene Church on March 11, 1978. Robert worked at a variety of jobs including driving truck for Portland Trucking, Exelon Nuclear, FS, and most recently as a CNA at Good Samaritan Home in Prophetstown.

He enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, working on cars, and loved to be the “Boss” at home. He was always telling “Dad jokes” and loved his grandkids.

Robert is survived by his wife, Ruby; mother, Carol Large of Erie; children, Shauna Marie (Wesley) Marshall of Erie, Robert Earl Large Jr, (Lisa) of Lyndon, Joshua Dale Large (Tillie Bullock) of Luka; siblings, Sherry Zickert of Silvis, Pat Kennedy of Arlington Heights, and Brian Large of Prophetstown; and grandchildren, Blaze Marshall, Nathan Large, Samantha Large, Hunter Large, Slayden Bullock, Lilly Bullock, and Robert Riley.

1961: Two qualify for office of Justice of the Peace 60 Years January 12, 1961

Two candidates have qualified for the office of Justice of the Peace of the newly formed District No. 5, which includes Fulton, Albany, Garden Plain and Newton Townships.

Robert Lockhart of Fulton and Keith Higgins of Albany are the candidates. Edward Loftus is a candidate for constable of the new District No. 5. He has served as constable of Fulton Township for a number of years.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thompson went to Springfield to attend the inauguration ceremonies and inaugural ball for Otto Kerner, the newly elected Democratic governor of Illinois. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jahn, Thomas M. Hand, Thomas J. Hand and Richard Lawrence also witnessed the inauguration. Mr. Thompson also received an invitation for the inaugural ceremonies in Washington. D. C. for John Fitzgerald Kennedy as he becomes 35th president. They are not planning to go to Washington.

50 Years January 13, 1971

Martin Merema, partner of Merema Bros., returned from a 10 day business and pleasure trip to Costa

del Sol, a vacation area in southern Spain. He was among Massey-Ferguson dealers of the Northeast Region who had the opportunity to go on the trip.

The Fulton Public Library board of trustees met and authorized the treasurer to pay the remaining $1,000 due on a loan made five years ago when extensive remodeling of the library was completed.

40 Years January 14, 1981

Karen Trichardt, Third Ward alderman, will not seek re-election in the upcoming city election. Vernon Temple, alderman in the First Ward, will not seek re-election.

Harold Huizenga, alderman in the Second Ward, is undecided. Mayor Warren Wiersema announced he will not seek re-election. City Clerk, Lavonne Huizenga, will run, and Garry Medema, City Treasurer, is undecided.

Tom Kamm, Fulton Public Works Director, says work is progressing rapidly on a city park at the east end of town. The park is located between Fourteenth Avenue and Tenth Avenue on the west side of Route 84.

Megan Leah Vall who was born on January 2, at 12:25 p.m. is Fulton’s first baby of 1991. Her parents are Dennis and Shelly Vall and she also has two brothers Robert and Andrew. She was born in the University Hospital in Iowa City and weighed seven pounds, 14 ounces and was 20 ½ inches long.

Illinois Student Assistance Commission announced the 1991-92 Illinois State Scholars. Six of the scholars include students from Fulton High School. They include: Jason Rennecker, Dan Myers, Matt Newberg, August Johnson, Jennie Heldt and Coral Flikkema.

Brennon Kavanagh, a senior at West Carroll High School in Savanna, has been awarded top honors in the Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s annual Young Artist Auditions.

Kavanagh won the auditions with a performance of the Concerto for Tenor Saxophone and Orchestra by American composer Robert Ward.

In addition to the $250 in prize money from the Symphony,the honoree is usually given the opportunity to perform their solo piece with the orchestra on one of their concerts. With the Symphony on hiatus due to thepandemic, that may not be

possible this time.

Brennon is the son of Timothy and Kyong Cavanagh, and has been a saxophone student of Emily Bressler since 5th grade. He has been a regular participant in regional honor bands throughout his school years, and for the past two years has been selected for the Illinois All-State Concert Band.

He is enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard as amusician in the 144th Army Band, and will attend a 10-week training at the Army School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA, this summer.

The Young Artist Audition program also awarded honorable mention status to violinist Clara Ashdown of Fenton, and to clarinetist AubreyCharles of Mt. Carroll. Each will receive a monetary award as well as counsel, suggestions, and encouragement from the panel of judges from the Symphony.

The auditions are held each January, and open to any high school musician in the Symphony’s service area. This is the Symphony’s 67th year, and the auditions have been a service to music education in the area for much of that time.

COVID variant virus transmission concerns

By this time most people have heard of the COVID variant virus and may have concerns about how this may change the impact after we have struggled for the past year on how to manage the original virus.

First we need to recognize that all

viruses mutate on a regular basis.

The amount of mutations is generally low in the course of a month.

What is exceptional about the variant COVID virus is the accelerated number of mutations that are occurring in the course of a month which has some experts concerned about the transmission.

Arrests Dec. 31 At approximately 11:39 p.m., police attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Thomas E. Ulve, 42 of Rock Falls, in the area of East Wall Street and South Cherry Street, Morrison, for moving violations.

Ulve then attempted to elude the Morrison Police, southbound on Crosby Road (IL RT 78), westbound on Rock Road and then onto Smit Road.

Ulve also had outstanding warrants from Whiteside County, Lee County and the State of Wisconsin. He was transported to the Whiteside County Jail.
