HOW ARE WE DOING? We want to hear from you. Email us your thoughts at feedback@shawmedia.com.
Do you receive Social Security benefit payments? If you do, it’s almost a certainty you will receive them through a direct deposit to your bank or credit union account. The Social Security Administration posted a scam alert about those direct deposit accounts. They report that Social Security beneficiaries are receiving notifications that they won a sweepstakes prize or a contest. But to receive your prize, you need to switch your benefit account from your bank or credit union to a different account, maybe a prepaid debit card. To make this switch, scammers ask for your personal information, including your Social Security number and your bank account information. Giving this information out is a big mistake. The criminals will use this infor-
SENIORS VS. CRIME Randy Meier mation to divert benefit payments to another bank, leaving the beneficiaries wondering where their expected monthly deposit went. Nothing legitimate will ever require you to change your bank account to claim some prize. Likewise, if someone contacts you and says they can increase your Social Security benefits in exchange for your information or payment of a fee, that’s a surefire scam. The Social Security Administration gives this guidance: • Never change your deposit infor-
mation in response to a phone call, text, or some prize notification • Always keep your Social Security and bank account information private • You can change and review your direct deposit information yourself through your own my Social Security account at https://www.ssa.gov/ myaccount • If you think someone changed your deposit account without your permission, contact Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 Let me know about scams, fraud, or other crookedness you run across. Most of what I learn, I learn from you.

PROPHETSTOWN LIBRARY PROGRAMS IMPACT volunteer hours available Prophetstown Library has recently been approved as a volunteer partner in the Sauk Valley Community College Impact Program. This means anyone who is currently participating in the IMPACT Program can serve their volunteer hours at the library, which will get the proper paperwork filled out for the participant to get credit for the hours served. Please contact the library if you’re interested in signing up. Pen Pal Club Prophetstown Library is hosting a Pen Pal Club in cooperation with a nationwide program for people of all ages to write to a pen pal. The program is for ages 5 to 100. Once you get signed up, the administration will let us know a good match with a person of corresponding age and we will let you know what library they are from. There is no sharing of personal addresses. The person who writes the pen pal letter will drop off the letter at the library, and the library will mail the letter to the corresponding library where your pen pal is a patron at that library. Once they write back, the letter will get sent to Prophetstown Library, which will either email or phone you to let you know your letter is in. Stop by the library to sign up.

From MTI Shows
Alex the lion is the king of the urban jungle, the main attraction at New York’s Central Park Zoo. He and his best friends – Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo – have spent their whole lives in blissful captivity before an admiring public and with regular meals provided for them. Not content to leave well enough alone, Marty lets his curiosity get the better of him and makes his escape – with the help of some prodigious penguins – to explore the world. Woodlawn Arts Academy is an agency of United Way of Whiteside and Lee counties, and financial assistance is available to those who qualify. Details on the Academy’s programming and financial assistance applications are available in the Academy office or on the website. The Academy acknowledges support from the Illinois Arts Council.

‘You took our futures,’ mom of teen killed in crash says to son’s best friend By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com As he was met with tearful statements from three grieving parents, a Deer Grove teenager pleaded guilty Wednesday to three traffic offenses connected to a 2024 collision that killed three Tampico teens. Keyan L. Crow, 19, pleaded guilty in Whiteside County Circuit Court to one count each of disregarding a stop sign, failure to reduce speed and violation of the graduated driver’s license law. The latter count came because he was operating a vehicle with more than one passenger who wasn’t a sibling younger than age 20.

A roadside memorial marks the site on Friday, March 29, 2024, where three Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico High School/Middle School students were killed in a crash that occurred on March 28, 2024, at the corner of Luther and Hahnaman roads. Chasity Dorathy, mother of Douglas DJ was Crow’s best friend. “DJ” Dorathy, 16, who was killed in the “You took our futures,” she said from crash, spoke directly to Crow about how the witness stand. “You get to be here.
You get more birthdays. You get more time with your family.” She told Crow she had forgiven him. “But I’ll never forget what you took from us,” she said. “I wish you luck, Keyan.” The crash happened about 1 p.m. March 28, 2024. Crow, then 17, was driving a 2003 Ford pickup north on Luther Road just outside Tampico when he failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by a semitruck traveling east on Hahnaman Road. His passengers, Jayden Hanson and Channing Swertfeger, both 14, and DJ, 16, died at the scene. Crow was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. All four boys were Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico High School/ Middle School students. Channing was an eighth grader. The semi driver, Korey L. Hostetler, also of Deer Grove, was not injured. A

• CRASH Continued from page 9 complaint was filed April 1, 2024, charging Hostetler with failure to reduce speed in connection with the crash. That charge was later dismissed. In agreeing to the plea deal Wednesday, Crow was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine on each charge – the maximum sentence allowed under the law, Whiteside County Associate Judge Jonathan Ruud told the courtroom, which was filled with victims’ family members. After the plea was accepted, Dorathy and Swertfeger’s mothers read victim impact statements. Attorney James Mertes read a statement submitted by Hanson’s father. All three statements spoke to the ongoing loss the victims’ families said they suffered, and the loved ones’ futures they felt were erased. Austin Hanson wrote about his 14-year-old son’s love of the land and future plans that included the father and son working side by side on the farm someday. The boy was
able to weld and fabricate and could run half-million-dollar machines, his father wrote. “I see nothing now except the space where he should have been,” Mertes said as he read Hanson’s statement, which referenced the Making a Farmer Foundation founded in memory of Jayden. The foundation raises money to fund ag-related scholarships. Swertfeger’s mother, Kara, spoke about missing the sound of her son running through the house. She said she’ll never get to see Channing grow up to become a man. “There is a hole in our family that will never be filled,” she said. As the sentencing drew to a close, Ruud addressed the families in the courtroom. “This is every parent’s nightmare,” Ruud said. “This is an absolute tragedy, and there is nothing I can do or say today that will change that. My heart breaks for you. I am so sorry.” He then addressed Crow. “I challenge you to do something with your life,” Ruud said. “Because out of this group of friends, you are the only one who has a chance to.”
Ex-Morrison nursing home resident accused of having meth By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com A former Morrison nursing home resident has pleaded not guilty to charges accusing him of storing meth in his bathroom at the facility and beating a nursing home employee as she attempted to remove it. David Ponce, 58, of East Moline is charged with possession of less than 5 grams of meth, a Class 3 felony, and misdemeanor battery in connection with a July 31 incident at La Bella of Morrison, 500 N. Jackson St., Morrison. Prosecutors laid out the charges Monday during a preliminary hearing in Whiteside County Circuit Court. According to testimony provided that day, Ponce had been living in the facility for a few months, undergoing physical rehabilitation, when another resident, who lives in a different room at the facility, told a nurse that Ponce had hidden meth behind his bathroom sink.
A Morrison police officer testified that the nurse went into the room, found a bag with a crystal substance in it and suffered scratches to her neck and arms as Ponce flailed his arms at her. The officer alleged in testimony that Ponce, who was in a wheelchair, then rolled himself out of the building and was heading toward a nearby apartment complex when he ended up in an adjoining cornfield and fell out of his chair. Ponce was getting back into his chair as officers approached him. He was then placed under a no-trespass order issued on behalf of the nursing home, according to the testimony. The substance in the bag later tested positive for meth, the officer said in testimony. Whiteside County Associate Court Judge Magen Mertes ruled that probable cause exists to move the case forward. Ponce, who was granted pretrial release, will next appear in court for a pretrial conference at 9 a.m. Dec. 16.

2026 Harvest Today, Plan for Tomorrow Addressing Limited Resources in the Agricultural Sector- continued Water management Agriculture puts a strain on water sources. Approximately 70 percent of global freshwater withdrawals are attributed to agricultural needs, says the World Resources Institute. Micro-irrigation can involve the use of drip or sprinkler systems to increase water efficiency. In regions with limited energy infrastructure, use of solar pumps will provide a low-cost, sustainable means to accessing groundwater. Treated urban wastewater can be used for non-food crops, preserving potable water for high-value produce and human consumption on farms and elsewhere. Capital Limited capital can be a concern for farmers who are looking to invest in modern tools and practices. Cooperative financing and government support programs can reduce funding barriers. Farmers can pool resources to buy in bulk and share expensive machinery. Educating the public also can be a step in the right direction. Despite research indicating a need to invest in agriculture, investment remains minimal. Agriculture also is a market with very volatile prices. But with more interest, the tides may change and make investing in agriculture more attractive. Addressing limited agricultural resources requires utilization of what’s already available with an emphasis on sustainability. Through collaboration and discussion, farmers can find the assistance they need.

Putting Farm Waste to Good Use Agricultural waste poses a challenge for farmers, even if the subject does not garner a lot of attention outside of rural areas. Farms generate enormous amounts of organic waste, including crop residues, fruit peels, sawdust, and livestock manure. Farmers must decide how to get rid of agricultural waste legally and economically. If not disposed of properly, farm waste can pollute the environment, particularly the air and waterways like rivers and streams. It is best for everyone to mitigate agricultural waste to create ffurther hazards. Farmers may not have considered recycling some agricultural waste, but it is a way to transform this potential hazard into something that can be used on the farm itself or sold commercially. The following are some considerations for putting farm waste to good use. Compost Animal waste, crop residues and additional organic material can be combined to create nutrient-rich compost. Compost is utilized to improve soil structure, fertility and water retention. This helps reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers. By investing in large-scale composting tools, farmers can process hundreds or even thousands of tons of organic matter each year. While some can be used on the farm, the excess can be sold at a profit. Biogas Biogas production is carried out through a process known as anaerobic digestion (AD). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says AD involves bacteria breaking down organic matter, such as animal manure, wastewater biosolids and food wastes in the absence of oxygen. As the bacteria digest the waste, they generate biogas, which is mostly comprised of methane. Capturing biogas can reduce greenhouse gas emissions on a farm, and the biogas can be turned into a renewable energy source to power electricity, heating or transportation, according to Prime Dumpster Incorporated.
