The River Bend Football Bulldogs, composed of student-athletes from Fulton Middle School, successfully turned their preseason scrimmage into a community victory by collecting 185 food items for the Fulton Food Pantry during the team’s annual Family Football Day. Instead of traditional admission fees, the team invited fans and families to donate non-perishable food items to support local families in need. The initiative brought the
community together to cheer on the young athletes while addressing local food insecurity. Following the event, the players personally delivered the donations to the Fulton Food Pantry. During the visit, pantry volunteers gave the team a guided tour, explaining the pantry’s daily operations and overall mission. The educational experience allowed the players to see firsthand how their efforts directly benefit their neighbors. “We are incredibly proud of our players and the Fulton community,” said Lee Haigwood, president of River Bend Football.
“Family Football Day is about more than just preparing for the season; it is about teaching these young men the importance of giving back. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who attended and donated.” The River Bend Football Bulldogs program serves youth athletes from Fulton Middle School, focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship and community leadership both on and off the field. The Fulton Food Pantry continues to accept donations and volunteer support to serve residents. For information or to get involved, contact the pantry directly.
Time to pull some ideas from my never-going-to-happen file I have a hidden “Things To Do” list. It’s not like the other lists I keep making – things I don’t want to forget or tasks I tend to ignore – like the nagging list. My hidden lists are mostly ideas or random thoughts. I’ve been doing this for years. Perhaps what I’m talking about is wish lists, not just for me, always. They are hidden since they get tucked into a “pending action” folder. For when, you know, I have more time, energy and resources. Well, at my age I’m lacking most of that. But I still have this space, this moment, these words. So ... why not throw out some ideas? Maybe someone can make wine from my grapes or at least enjoy a hearty chuckle. FIRST: I’ve read a lot about and have written about the aching sadness of loneliness. Every community (or neighborhoods in larger cities) should have a program I’d call “1+1.” The goal is to encourage people to reach out to one individual a day who is alone. Someone besides a family member who needs a friend. Someone to talk to, share a meal or cup of coffee, take a walk, listen to music, remember a birthday. You decide the frequency and whether it’s a phone call, a letter or a personal visit. And if and when you reach out to another. You need enough frequency to burst the lonely bubble. Just you and one person ... that’s 1+1 = the two of you. And perhaps it’s the lonely person who eventually reaches out. SECOND: Drug addiction is a serious prob-

Stovetop zucchini pasta is a way to use garden’s bounty This recipe is perfect for this time of year when garden produce is abundant; it’s too hot to cook, and you don’t have a lot of time to get dinner on the table. It’s very hands-off. You can get it started and go do something else. Come back in a bit, add a few ingredients, and then go back to what you were doing. It’s not a zucchini “noodle” or “zoodle” recipe. The zucchini is featured in the sauce along with fresh tomatoes. By starting the zucchini and tomatoes first in a little olive oil and then mashing them together, you get a silky, almost creamy pasta “sauce” that’s a bit rustic. After that step is complete, you throw every-
BEYOND TRIM Sherry DeWalt thing else in. It’s truly a one-pot, top of the stove from start to finish meal. I used pizza sauce instead of spaghetti sauce for a deeper, richer flavor, and you can add additional vegetables or protein to your taste. Here’s the basic recipe: • 2 Tablespoons olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, sliced • 1 medium zucchini, cut into cubes • 2-3 Roma or plum tomatoes, cut
into chunks • 1 cup pizza sauce • 2 ½ cups broth or water • 12 oz. dried pasta (I like rotini, but you can use penne, macaroni, or even broken spaghetti pieces) Add olive oil, garlic, zucchini, and tomatoes to a deep sauté or large saucepan over medium heat. Cover with a lid and let the vegetables cook and steam for 10-12 minutes. Use a potato masher to break down the mixture in the pan until no large chunks remain. Add pizza sauce, broth or water, and pasta. The liquid should just cover the pasta. If not, add a bit more. Give the mixture a stir and cover. Cook for 10-12 minutes until pasta
is al dente. In the last few minutes of cooking time, you can stir in some chopped fresh spinach, canned beans (cannellini beans or garbanzo beans work well), or cooked vegetables. Cook an additional 3-5 minutes until heated through. Since the vegetables are added at the end, they need to be pre-cooked (or canned). You could use artichokes, roasted red peppers, olives, or any leftovers you have in the fridge. You can also serve with some grated parmesan cheese on top.

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com Love was in the air Friday, Aug. 7, at Resthave Care & Rehabilitation in Morrison during a vow renewal celebration. Eleven couples, representing a remarkable 606 years of marriage, renewed their vows surrounded by family, friends, and the Resthave community. A special thanks goes to the Rev. Mike Selburg, who officiated the ceremony. Although this was his first time conducting a group vow renewal, Selburg did a marvelous job, making the service both heartfelt and memorable. The sunflower-themed décor brought warmth and cheer to the celebration. Many of the couples shared treasured keepsakes and photographs from their original weddings, adding a personal and meaningful touch to the day. The men received boutonnieres, the ladies were presented with corsages, and everyone dressed up for the occasion, making the celebration feel even more special. Guests enjoyed a reception featuring a small, tiered wedding cake, a lemonade bar, homemade mints, nuts, fresh fruit, salami, crackers, cheese, and Chex mix. DJ Pat Rosenow’s music added to the joy of the day.

Some of the couples attending the vow renewal celebration at Resthave Care and Rehabilitation in Morrison were Chester and Betty Davenport (front row left), Rosemary and Paul Sibley, Gail and David Gibson (back row left), and Pinky and Vern VanDyke.

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com The Clinton Symphony Orchestra has unveiled plans for its 73rd concert season. Programming will range from Beethoven’s tribute to heroism to Tchaikovsky’s epic “Piano Concerto.” Music Director and Conductor Silas Nathaniel Huff has invited audiences to “not just listen to music, but experience the triumph of the human spirit.” The concert season will open Sept. 19 with a program of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony, originally dedicated to Napoleon. When Napoleon declared himself emperor, the composer angrily scratched off the dedication page and wrote: “to the memory of a great man.” The program will include an overture by Saint-Saëns and a new piece by
American composer Elena Specht. Nov. 7 finds virtuoso violinist Andrew Sords as guest soloist, performing the “Violin Concerto” by Johannes Brahms Silas Nathaniel Huff with the orchestra. The concerto will be paired with a Mozart overture and a new composition by Colonel Scott McKenzie, commander of the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.” Dec. 12 finds the orchestra performing its traditional “Holidays with the Symphony” concert, featuring seasonal music, including a carol sing-along. Musicians of the Symphony and their
friends will prepare a program of chamber music for the afternoon of Jan. 10. The concert of small-ensemble music has become a favorite with audiences. A Sunday afternoon Family Concert is scheduled for Feb. 28. The theme for the concert is “Dance Around the World,” and it will feature global rhythms from Argentine tangos to Viennese waltzes. A student soloist, chosen from January auditions for area high school musicians, will also be featured. Pianist Marian Lee returns to the stage to play Tchaikovsky’s soaring “First Piano Concerto” with the orchestra. The April 10 concert will also feature Schubert’s elegant “Italian Overture” and Mozart’s “Paris” Symphony. Silas Nathaniel Huff first appeared as substitute conductor of the Clinton Symphony in December 2024, and served as
interim conductor last season. He has conducted hundreds of concerts across America and abroad in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, and Russia. He is director of Maestro Masterclasses and co-director of the International Conducting Institute. Clinton Symphony Orchestra is a non-profit organization, relying on ticket sales, contributions, and grants for its operation. Concerts each include about 50 area musicians. Fundraising for this season is now in progress, and season tickets for the six concerts are on sale at a 25% savings from the price of individual concert tickets. Information about contributions, ticket sales, and concerts is available at clintonsymphony.org or by mail at Box 116, Clinton, IA 52732.

The Mulkins Family is scheduled to perform at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at Spring Valley Reformed Church in Fulton. The Mulkins Family’s music journey started not too long ago when someone asked Cindy, “Do you sing as a family?” She responded, “No, we don’t have any music background or training.” Well, a lot has changed since that thought-provoking question. Today, they sing, travel, and evangelize all around the country.

Bears finally have offensive weapons to support Caleb Williams As the first-place White Sox were taking on a Cubs team with the fifth-best record in baseball and PCA – the favorite to win the NL MVP – and future hockey Hall of Famer Patrick Kane was back in Chicago wearing his familiar No. 88 jersey, you had to appreciate the good vibes surrounding Chicago sports. We’ve come a long way from the constant rebuilds. The same holds true for our Bears, and there’s no better example than the layers of weapons in the offensive huddle. I flash back just a few seasons, when the Bears’ top wide receivers included Darnell Mooney, Equanimeous St. Brown, Byron Pringle, Velus Jones Jr., Dante Pettis and Ihmir Smith-Marsette. Not exactly murderers’ row. I can easily make the argument that the receivers fighting for a roster spot in last Saturday’s game at Soldier Field are better than that 2022 group. Scotty Miller caught touchdowns from Tom Brady during the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl season, and he still might not make this talented roster. The Bears’ offense has the potential to be as good as any in the league, but they’re not just top-heavy. This is a deep depth chart.
ON THE BEARS Marc Silverman Kaden Davis had 88 receiving yards against the Browns and has made plays almost every day in training camp, yet he still may not make this team. Davis, Miller, Jahdae Walker, Maurice Alexander, JP Richardson and Ray-Ray McCloud are the types of players Bears fans once hoped would become featured contributors. Remember Devin Aromashodu, Tanner Gentry or Collin Johnson? You probably don’t, and that’s the point. Those were the players fans talked themselves into because previous decision-makers didn’t know how to acquire real playmakers. In the past, the Bears would acquire a player like Jay Cutler and then fail to support him with proper coaching, weapons or offensive linemen. “Raise the tide by yourself, Jay,” was essentially the rallying cry. And when he couldn’t, we criticized him instead of the organization. Not only did the Bears find their franchise quarterback in Caleb Williams, but they also realized he wasn’t going to
develop with the wave of a magic wand. It takes support, and they’re finally following a process that makes sense. It starts with Ben Johnson and the accountability he demands from everyone. It continues with Johnson’s playbook, but it doesn’t rely solely on scheme. It works because the offensive line is anchored by stars like Joe Thuney and Darnell Wright. It works because the Bears have game changers like Rome Odunze, Luther Burden and Colston Loveland. And that allows players like Kalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas and Cole Kmet to settle into important complementary roles. Thomas has some similar traits to Devin Hester. The Bears of old asked Hester to be their No. 1 receiver. Johnson’s Bears are asking Thomas to be a playmaker within a complete offense. And it’s simply not enough to acquire good players. They must be developed. While talented, Odunze, Burden and Loveland are just scratching the surface. I talked to Bears wide receiver coach Antwaan Randle El this week, and he warned Bears fans not to count out Odunze, saying, “You don’t know the man if you’re counting him out.” While the stats aren’t the gaudy num-
bers we were hoping for before the foot injury last year, Odunze had five touchdowns in four games and was averaging 74 receiving yards per game. While not 100%, he made one of the biggest catches of the year – a 28-yard strike from Caleb Williams on fourth down that set up a touchdown. The city of Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a No. 1 wide receiver. I’m thankful Johnson understands that developing players – and building a Super Bowl team – doesn’t happen without setting the tone in training camp. This team still needs good old-fashioned work, and they’ll get it during an intense joint practice with the Bengals. As you watch the Bears’ next game Saturday in Cincinnati, dream about the Cinderella story of a player like Kaden Davis or the hometown kid, Scotty Miller. But also recognize something Bears fans haven’t been able to say in a long time: this team finally has true stars. We’ve come a long way.

PREP FOOTBALL: FULTON 32, ST. BEDE 24
By BRAD MARTIN Shaw Local News Network correspondent After a poor start that yielded two fumbles and a pair of penalties that killed a drive, Fulton’s offensive and defensive lines took over and dominated the game as the Steamers rolled through St. Bede for a 32-24 victory Saturday at the Academy a day after storms delayed the opening of the 2026 season. Teague Bray took the opening kick and fumbled, giving the Bruins great starting field position, but St. Bede was unable to do much after an initial first down run by Brennen Hirst. But on the very next play, Wyatt Connor fumbled, giving the Bruins even better field position. The Bruins capitalized on a Stuart McGunnigal 24-yard touchdown pass to Niko Pappas-Anniballi, and after the 2-point conversion St. Bede led 8-0. Fulton then started to roll its way down the field, but two penalties made it first-and-25 and ultimately led to a turnover on downs. On third-and-11 just as McGunnigal was about to get hit, he was able to complete a pass to Bronko Withey, who turned on the jets for an 83-yard touchdown that pushed the lead to 16-0. “I was really happy with the way we started out,” St. Bede coach Jack Brady said. “We took advantage of a couple fumbles and got the passing game going a bit.” After that, however, the Steamers dominated the rest of the half on the line of scrimmage. Mayson Stretton ran for 7 yards, and Blaze Damhoff for another 10. Easton Spooner then found Dylan Kalyan for 16 yards. The O-line continued to open holes up as Wyatt Connor had runs of 11 and 9 yards before a touchdown run from 2 yards out cut the deficit to 16-6. The Bruins struggled to get the run established and on fourth-and-1, Hirst was stuffed behind the line and St. Bede turned the ball over on downs. In the second quarter, the Steamers drove down field, converting multiple third downs, before Connor scored from 1 yard out to cut the deficit to 16-12.

Fulton’s Wyatt Connor scores a touchdown as St. Bede’s Chase Riva misses the tackle on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026 at St. Bede Academy. The Steamers defense continued to control the line and push the Bruins back in the run game. Fulton blocked a punt, and on the Steamers’ first play, Connor cruised into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run to take an 18-16 lead. The Bruins started the next drive with a 32-yard pass to Withey, but McGunnigal was sacked again before St. Bede had to punt. Fulton didn’t have much time left, but with 11 seconds left in the half Spooner found Evan Folk for a 51-yard touchdown to go into the break with a 26-16 lead. “We always talk about how we’re going to handle adversity,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said. “I thought our guys responded. We were back on our heels when St. Bede came out
ready to play. I thought we got the momentum back going into the half.” McGunnigal was sacked on the first play of the third quarter, and moments later the Bruins were forced to punt. The Bruins defense started to play a bit better and forced a Steamers punt on their next possession. The Bruins offense started to get going, as well, as McGunnigal found Pappas-Anniballi for 17 yards before Landon Marquez rattled off a 15-yard run. After the Steamers jumped offside to give the Bruins a first down, Marquez broke free for gains of 8 and 9 yards. On fourth-and-short, Hirst picked up the first down and then Marquez scored on a 2-yard touchdown to cut
the deficit to 26-24. The Steamers, however, responded with a 6½ minute drive capped with a 5-yard TD run by Bray to push the lead to 32-24. On the ensuing drive, St. Bede was sacked on third down. An offside penalty gave the Bruins a short fourth down, but the Steamers defense forced a turnover on downs. Fulton ran the ball down to the St. Bede 10-yard line where it took a knee. Connor led the Steamers with 107 yards and three TDs on 21 carries, while Spooner was 6 of 7 for 104 yards and a TD. McGunnigal was 8 of 16 for 180 yards and two touchdowns for St. Bede, while Marquez had 53 yards and a score on 12 carries.
