HOW ARE WE DOING? We want to hear from you. Email us your thoughts at feedback@shawmedia.com.

Gift cards are for gifts. You cannot use gift cards to pay fines, or tolls. You cannot buy a house with gift cards. You cannot protect the money in your bank account using gift cards. You cannot avoid prosecution for a crime by buying gift cards. You cannot prevent fraud on your Facebook account using gift cards. Your priest, minister or pastor will never ask you for gift cards. Your boss will never ask you to buy gift cards. You cannot make a deposit on a rental property using gift cards. Gift cards are for gifts. Anyone who demands payment by gift card is always, always, always a scammer. Since Aug. 1, four different people in the Clinton, Iowa, area reported losing $13,500 in gift card scams: • A 68-year-old woman received an email informing her of a $455 charge from Geek Squad. The Geek Squad imposters she contacted to cancel this charge tricked her into buying $4,100 in Apple cards. • A 64-year-old woman tried to phone Facebook to unblock her profile. She reached an imposter number. The imposter told her to buy $4,600 in Apple gift cards to deter the fraud he discovered in the Facebook profile.

SENIORS VS. CRIME Randy Meier • A 74-year-old woman ordering shoes online saw a pop-up appear on her monitor, showing a $339 charge for a computer. She called the number on the pop-up and reached someone naming himself as a commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission (using a real name). This imposter convinced the woman that someone used her bank account to fund child porn. To prevent authorities from discovering this, she needed to buy $3,800 in Apple and Sephora cards. • A 47-year-old woman received a call at work from someone posing as a police officer, telling her she missed federal jury duty. To keep herself out of jail, she needed to buy $2,000 in Walmart One-Pay cards. Here’s a short training exercise you can try at home to brush up on gift cards. Q: Should I buy iTunes, Apple, Google Play, Steam, Target, BestBuy, Amazon, Walmart or any other gift card for someone who demands pay-

ment? For any reason? A: NO. Here’s another exercise. In your search engine browser, type “Where can I use an Apple gift card except Apple?” This is the answer: You cannot use an Apple gift card anywhere outside of Apple’s ecosystem Repeat the exercise, substituting Target for Apple. Then repeat again, substituting Amazon for Target. You will get the same result. Gift cards can only be used with the retailer or business that issued the card. Scammers will scare people with all kinds of stories demanding payments in gift cards. The stories don’t matter – they are all scams. Gift cards are for gifts.

Tyson plant, major northwestern Illinois employer, 3 announces closure, 2,500 jobs eliminated By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com Tyson Foods has announced it is shuttering its northwestern Illinois beef processing plant as it makes “strategic changes to its beef operations to position the company for long-term success.” The company said in a Thursday news release that closing its Joslin plant in Rock Island County is part of a plan to create a more competitive footprint amidst one of the most historic cattle shortages the country has ever experienced. The closure becomes effective Friday, Aug. 14. “Recent USDA cattle inventory data, which included continued evidence of limited heifer retention, indicates these supply constraints are likely to persist, requiring strategic action,” the statement read. The plant has served as a major economic engine for the region since opening in 1983, and i t s c l o s u r e w i l l Illinois Rep. Ryan abruptly eliminate Spain, R-Peoria thousands of jobs for families throughout the region, said state Sen. Li Arellano Jr., R-Dixon. The closure is leaving about 2,500 workers without jobs in the northwestern edge of the 37th Legislative District. “This is a devastating blow for northwest Illinois, and especially the Quad Cities Metro that is already being hammered by economic losses across the border to Iowa,” Arellano said. State Rep. Ryan Spain, R-Peoria, who represents Illinois 73rd House District, said he has asked Tyson Foods and others to work together to analyze potential repurposing of the facility to preserve jobs. “I am stunned and saddened by the news that Tyson Foods is closing after 43 years in Joslin,” Spain said. “This is devastating to our region, to the families that depend on the income they receive from this factory, and to the communities who will bear the downstream impacts of this closure.” In the statement announcing the Joslin facility’s closure, the company said

Photo provided by the Office of state Sen. Li Arellano Jr.

State Sen. Li Arellano Jr. it also will end operations at its Eagle Mountain, Utah, case-ready facility. Tyson Foods also is pursuing the sale of its Pasco, Washington, beef facility. Tyson Foods said its plan is to anchor its beef business around three strategically located beef facilities in the central United States: Dakota City, Nebraska; Holcomb, Kansas; and Amarillo, Texas, “to create a more competitive footprint.” With these changes, the company will ramp back up a second shift at its Amarillo, Texas, facility as cattle become available. Collectively, these changes will allow the company to maintain a similar level of cattle harvesting across a more efficient and modern network, according to company officials. The company also said it would help displaced workers

apply for open positions at other facilities. “I feel deeply for these families who depended on this plant for their livelihood,” Arellano said. “They are being completely uprooted. Multiple communities have been gutted almost overnight. These are 2,500 people who woke up with a job and a plan for their future and are now wondering how they are going to put food on the table. It’s heartbreaking.” Arellano is also working to identify state resources and assistance that may be available to help affected workers and families throughout the region during the transition. “Tyson Foods must honor its commitment to supporting the impacted employees through this transition, providing them with necessary resources

and assistance to navigate this difficult situation,” Spain said, adding that the terminated employees will be paid for the next 60 days. “Local officials and community leaders are united in urging state agencies to assist with worker transition and support services, as well as facilitating avenues for economic revitalization for this impacted regional economy.” Arellano is encouraging residents in the Joslin area to join him at a town hall Aug. 31 in Port Byron to voice their concerns. “The loss of Tyson Foods is another glaring example of the uncompetitive business climate we offer in Illinois,” Arellano said. “Something needs to change immediately. Illinois’ economy is in a dangerous tailspin, especially when compared to surrounding states.”

Why you need dental insurance in retirement. Many Americans are fortunate to have dental coverage for their entire working life, through employer-provided benefits. When those benefits end with retirement, paying dental bills out-of-pocket can come as a shock, leading people to put off or even go without care. Simply put — without dental insurance, there may be an important gap in your healthcare coverage.

When you’re comparing plans ...  Look for coverage that helps pay for major services. Some plans may limit the number of procedures — or pay for preventive care only.  Look for coverage with no deductibles. Some plans may require you to pay hundreds out of pocket before benefits are paid.  Shop for coverage with no annual maximum on cash benefits. Some plans have annual maximums of $1,000. 1

Medicare doesn’t pay for dental care.1

Previous dental work can wear out.

That’s right. As good as Medicare is, it was never meant to cover everything. That means if you want protection, you need to purchase individual insurance.

Even if you’ve had quality dental work in the past, you shouldn’t take your dental health for granted. In fact, your odds of having a dental problem only go up as you age.2

Early detection can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones.

Treatment is expensive — especially the services people over 50 often need.

The best way to prevent large dental bills is preventive care. The American Dental Association recommends checkups twice a year.

Consider these national average costs of treatment ... $274 for a checkup ... $299 for a filling ... $1,471 for a crown.3 Unexpected bills like this can be a real burden, especially if you’re on a fixed income.

Asian copperleaf: A weed-wrapped mystery By CODY CUTTER ccutter@shawmedia.com If you want to know more about something, sometimes you have to go deep into the weeds. That’s what ag experts are doing in Illinois, where a visitor from the East has taken root in a growing number of farm fields. It’s commonly called Asian copperleaf, and researchers have been keeping an eye on it since it showed up in crops in the Midwest. But even armed with the knowledge they’ve gathered so far, they’ve still got some things to learn. How did it make its way to the Midwest? How will it get along – or not – with local crops? And most importantly, is it a threat? Those questions, and the uncertainty they’ve caused, have biologists and farmers paying close attention to the uninvited guest that showed up in a southeastern Stephenson County cornfield this fall – and it’s raised the possibility that it may have been growing unnoticed for at least a couple of years. University of Illinois Extension commercial agriculture educator Kathryn Seebruck is among the researchers paying close attention to Asian copperleaf. The discovery in Stephenson County is the first confirmed sighting in Illinois. It had been documented on the East Coast in the early 1990s and in Iowa beginning in 2016. Because so little is known about the species, researchers are approaching it cautiously. It may ultimately prove to be a minor concern, but scientists say they would rather investigate the weed thoroughly than dismiss a potential threat too early. It could be a threat; then again it may not. Scientists want to be absolutely sure, Seebruck said. “It’s an herbaceous weedy species, and the big concern is that we just don’t know much about it at all,” said Seebruck, who works from the Extension’s office in Rockford. “The novelty of it, the concern of it, is: what is it that we don’t know? It could be a nonissue, or it could be a very large issue. We want to get to the bottom of which of those it is, or is it somewhere in between.” Asian copperleaf is a weed with a strange timeline. Known scientifically as Acalypha australis, the weed is not native to the United States. Its first confirmed national populations appeared in

Iowa State University Extension photo / Meaghan Anderson

Compared to similar plants in the spurge family, Asian copperleaf, seen here in its reproductive stage, does not produce milk sap. Plants are upright and can reach three feet in height. Leaves are lanceolate, serrated, two to three inches long, and the bracts are located beneath the flower and range from circular to heart-shaped. New York and New Jersey in the early 1990s. For more than two decades, there were no additional confirmed reports. Since the next confirmed discovery in Iowa in 2016, populations have been identified in 10 counties across central and eastern Iowa, the easternmost of the bunch being Fayette and Buchanan counties between Waterloo and Dubuque. The long gap, and the geographic leap from the East Coast to the Midwest, is one of the biggest mysteries surrounding Asian copperleaf. “Why it started out there would make a lot of sense with shipping and the movement of cargo,” Seebruck said. “The bigger question is, then, how did it jump from the East Coast all the way to the middle of the United States? That’s an interesting question that would be really fun to find out.” Researchers are not yet calling Asian copperleaf invasive. Seebruck prefers the term “non-native” because scientists still do not know enough

Kathryn Seebruck, University of Illinois Extension commercial agriculture educator, shows a brochure on the current information about Asian Copperleaf. Cody Cutter

about its behavior in Midwestern cropping systems, she said. What little is known is that the weed reproduces only by seed, can form dense patches in fields, and that populations in its native range have developed resistance to some herbicides. What researchers also know is enough to warrant caution. Problem weeds can compete with corn and soy-

beans for water, nutrients, sunlight and space. They can force farmers into more expensive herbicide programs and more aggressive management practices if they become difficult to control. Treating the plant as a potential problem until more is known is “a really safe approach,” Seebruck said.

See COPPERLEAF on page 15

• COPPERLEAF “You don’t want to tell a producer that it’s not going to be an issue when you don’t know that’s the case, and then it turns out to be a huge issue.” The Stephenson County discovery was made by an agronomist visiting a farmer’s field and recognizing that the plants looked similar to reports coming from Iowa, Seebruck said. It set off a chain of verification involving University of Illinois weed science specialist Dr. Aaron Hager, Illinois Natural History Survey botanist Dr. David Zaya and copperleaf genus specialist Dr. Geoff Levin. Samples were collected, examined and confirmed as Asian copperleaf. Part of the problem is that Asian copperleaf is easy to overlook. “It’s a very inconspicuous plant,” Seebruck said. “Before it flowers, there’s no real defining characteristics to it that someone can see and say it’s Asian copperleaf.” The species closely resembles the native relative hophornbeam copperleaf. The clearest differences appear only after reproductive structures develop later in the season. Early in crop growth, Seebruck said, farmers

should ideally be harvested last, and combines should be cleaned before moving to other fields – both practices that can help prevent seed movement. Seebruck said the broader lesson is that routine scouting matters, even for experienced growers. “Especially from a weed management perspective, you want to see if you have a weed problem to begin with, and recognizing that it’s not just a carpet of green that’s not corn or soybeans, but you want to know what is in that,” she said. For now, Asian copperleaf remains less understood than more familiar troublemakers such as waterhemp. Researchers see value in getting ahead of the problem early, while populations still appear limited. “It’s very unknown, but we want to make it known,” Seebruck said. “Then we can start to figure out what those unknowns are.” Suspect that Asian Copperleaf is in your field? Let the University of Illinois Extension know. Contact Extension commercial agriculture educator Kathryn Seebruck at seebruck@illinois.edu or call 815-9864357. Go to extension.illinois.edu for a downloadable fact sheet about Asian Copperleaf.

leaves with a reddish tint to them, which helps explain the name “copperleaf.” As the plant matures, it typically reaches 1 to 2 feet tall and develops distinctive bracts – leafy structures beneath the flowers – that help botanists separate it from native species. Still, so much remains unknown, and researchers are emphasizing vigilance rather than panic. Farmers are encouraged to scout fields before planting, during the growing season and again near harvest, Seebruck said. If they suspect Asian copperleaf, they can contact the Extension for help with identification; its staff may ask about field history, herbicide programs, crop rotation and what is planted in the field. The goal is to track where the weed is appearing and how quickly it may be spreading. I was eavesdropping. The subject was hair. Two women were talking nearby. Close enough for me to catch a couple of sentences before they moved on. “My nephew was visiting, and he has one of those military buzz cuts,” said the aunt. Then, laughing, she added, “I remember when he was a teenager, and his hair was long, and he combed it straight up.” That’s all I heard, but it was enough. I had no problem picturing the spiked hair. I smiled because I’ve always thought that particular “do” was ridiculous. But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? Which is why I made a note to myself about what the aunt said about her nephew. About how he had changed. Which is not uncommon and seems to be part of growing up. Still, that moment of eavesdropping left me thinking about hair and how we play with it over time. Then I had this deep thought: Throughout most of our lives, our hair makes a statement. It tells the world who we are or how we feel or who we refuse to be. I know there are patterns. Cultural

PAPERWORK Lonny Cain patterns that seem to fit certain generations, then shift with time. And there’s always pressure to conform. It’s interesting, though, how hairstyles change. It always must be radically different, right? Our generation cannot look like our parents. Looking at my early days, the dilemma with hair was long vs. short. Curls or no curls. Color issues revolved around blonde vs. brunette. We had advanced from the “greaser” era ... sort of. Not sure that era will ever completely disappear. My generation chose to let its hair down. Literally. Images of the 1960s lean toward the hippies who tended to reject mainstream values and rules ... such as cutting your hair. The more conservative rebels kept the locks longer but off the shoulders. Our music heroes helped set that pattern à la The Beatles, etc. Yes, I think we wanted to view our hair more as a statement than a fashion.

A protest of rules perhaps. A push for change. Or simply to be different ... not from each other really. But from those old folks we will never be. Ha. Now I’m the old folk. I’ve noticed the unkempt look now seems to be cool. (Sorry I missed that fad.) We used to call it “bed head.” Again, hair making a statement. It seems like the message always must be some form of protest. Sort of a gesture to the previous generation. (You know what gesture I mean, right?) Also, I see that color is a wild card now. Is it the more colors, the better? I’m not sure. But then I’m not supposed to understand. I’m supposed to be dazed and confused. It is hilarious how the older generation reacts. Yes, that means how I react. When I began to see purple streaks in my own family, I reacted appropriately. For an old guy. My immediate thought was, “What the hey?! What are you doing to your hair? That’ll look great at your next job interview.” (I kind of have the same reaction to tattoos all over the body.) But ... I just stared and said nothing. My reaction was normal for an old

fogey. We keep quiet once we realize we are strangers in a strange land. Unless … we are asked our opinion. I strongly advise young folks not to do that. It opens a dark portal. It would be interesting to talk with someone who has snipped and trimmed and whacked and waxed through generations. Someone who likely has seen a lot of “fads” come and go on the scalp. No doubt they have had to adapt and learn new skills, including sculpting and scripting across the temples. Hey, even the mohawk is a work of art, right? Yes, I think hair is still making a statement, no matter how old we get. I know my hair does. Not that it’s a statement I want to make. My hair just speaks for itself. I can hear it now … whispering down around my aging ears. “We’re still here. Down here. Look. Closer. You’ll see … some of us are still here.”

Forestry Association hosts chainsaw safety courses SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com The Northwest Illinois Forestry Association will host four days of chainsaw safety and woods worker (SAWW) training at Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation’s Big Sky Nature Reserve, 6504 E. Parker Road, Stockton. These courses are nationally accredited and designed for all chainsaw operators from novices to experienced professionals.

Sept. 18 and 19 will feature Level 101, a two-day course designed specifically for people with little or no chainsaw experience but a desire to get started safely, learn proper cutting techniques, and receive hands-on cutting practice. On Sept. 25, Level 1 is geared more toward those with previous saw-handling experience. The morning session covers safety and the cutting plan process, and the afternoon session offers hands-on cutting instruction. On Sept. 26, Level 2 will cover basic chainsaw maintenance, sharpening

techniques, and build upon hands-on information and exercises presented in the Level 1 outdoor session. All classes run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. “As important as safe handling of a chainsaw is, many operators are selftaught because professional instruction is hard to find,” NIFA spokesperson Tom Arnold said. “Our organization sponsors these classes annually to promote familiarity with the saw and its safe use in tree trimming, felling, and cutting.”

Classes will be conducted by Luke Saunders, owner of Blue Heron Stewardship, LLC, Viroqua, Wisconsin. Saunders has been a SAWW-certified chainsaw safety instructor for 12 years. Participants may register by visiting nifatrees.org and clicking on “Events” or contacting Arnold at tom@ arnoldsfarm.com or calling 815-9903663. Cost is $175 a day. To ensure everyone receives hands-on, personal instruction, class size is limited to the first 10 applicants.

Today, the Illinois State Fair is considered one of the better state fairs in the Midwest and is a Springfield institution. In its earliest decades, however, the fair was a traveling event, hosted by cities across the state. Founded in 1853, the fair did not have a permanent home for the first 40 years of its existence. Rather, the fair was held in 12 different locales, including some unexpected places. The inaugural fair opened on Oct. 11, 1853, on a 20-acre site in Springfield that was bounded by Amos, Douglas, Washington and Monroe streets. Dubbed the “Royal Jubilee,” admission was 25 cents, and attendance was substantial; on the fair’s third day, crowds were estimated at 20,000. A total of 765 individual entries were received. One source claimed that “not one inebriated man was seen!” In 1854, the fair returned to Springfield, and a highlight was a speech by Stephen A. Douglas, the sitting U.S. senator from Illinois, on Oct. 3. Abraham Lincoln, who would face Douglas for the Senate in 1858 and for president in 1860, delivered a three-hour rebuttal the following day. However, it was a time of reduced travel, as railroads were still in their infancy in much of the state, and journeys by horse and buggy were tortuous. Based on the difficulties, the Illinois State Register wrote in 1879, “the larger part of the people of the state could not visit the state fair” and “the fair was obliged to change its location from year to year and

HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS Tom Emery visit the people.” The fair was held in a different location each year from 1855-60, successively visiting Chicago, Alton, Peoria, Centralia, Freeport and Jacksonville. Lincoln appeared at the state fair in Alton in October 1856, and was in Centralia during the event in September 1858. Alton pledged $5,000 to land the fair in 1856, while Centralia wisely used the newly built railroads, including the Illinois Central, to offer free trains, twice a day, for fairgoers. There was one mishap in Centralia, though, as two children were trapped in a hot-air balloon that broke its mooring from their father’s fence. The balloon landed safely 18 miles away, with both children unhurt. Peoria, meanwhile, relied on scenery, holding the fair in 1857 “in a beautiful wooded bluff location.” In Jacksonville, the fair was held at the Morgan County Fairgrounds and was widely considered a success with strong attendance, despite a slight drop in receipts. By then, state fairs had exploded in popularity around the nation, and the Illinois fair was off and running, albeit in a different place each time. Chicago again hosted in 1861, but the following year, a change was made to hold the fair for two years in the same place. There was no fair in 1862, but Decatur hosted in both 1863

and 1864 on new fairgrounds built with a $15,000 subscription from residents. From there, the fair was in Chicago (1865-66), Quincy (1867-68), and Decatur again (1869-70) before DuQuoin (1871) and Ottawa (1872). It was back in Peoria in 1873-74, followed by Ottawa (1875-76), Freeport (1877-78), Springfield (1879-80), and Peoria again (1881-82). Eventually, the two-year selection rule was changed to four years, allowing for longer stops in some instances, like Chicago (1883-86). Two years in Olney (1887-88) and four in Peoria (1889-92) followed. There was no fair in 1893, in respect to the World’s Fair in Chicago that year. Despite its drawbacks, the fair made money in most of its temporary homes. In 1860, the organization reported a deficit of $670.88 because of higher expenses and premiums. However, the fair stabilized and turned a profit in virtually every other year on the road. The 1875 event in Ottawa had the smallest balance, $867.35. By comparison, the 1892 fair in Peoria produced $41,656.23. By now, there were increasing calls to select a permanent home for the fair. In its 1879 editorial, the Illinois State Register called the traveling arrangement “a circus system” that was obsolete since “the state is gridironed with railroads.” That improvement would “render [a permanent site] more accessible to more people than did its location at any point in the state 20 years ago.” Two votes in the Illinois House went nowhere, as Springfield was

picked in 1887 and Peoria in 1893, only to be blocked by lawmakers in the defeated cities. Finally, the Illinois Department of Agriculture decided to vote on a permanent home. In October 1893, the board released requirements for bidding cities, including a 100-acre fairgrounds with water, electricity and convenient transportation. Four finalists – Peoria, Springfield, Decatur and Bloomington – were chosen, but it was clear who the front-runner was. Springfield was the lone contender with an existing facility – the Sangamon County Fairgrounds, a 155-acre site north of town. A Sangamon County Historical Society source writes that the “specifications … might as well have been written for Springfield.” In eight rounds of voting by the department on Jan. 11, 1894, the capital city was selected, and held its first fair under the new arrangement on Sept. 24-30, 1894. The county fairgrounds site became the permanent home of the state fair, and was increased to 366 acres in 1924. Admission prices had jumped since the first fair 40 years before. Adults now had to shell out 50 cents to get in, while single riders on horseback were charged 75 cents and a carriage of four people had to pay $1.25. Clearly, the Illinois State Fair had come a long way since its nomadic days on the road.

30 PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: ERIE-PROPHETSTOWN

E-P returns 4 starting linemen, hoping to continue upward trend By TERRY DUCKETT

Shaw Local News Network correspondent The first three years of Tyler Whitebread’s Erie-Prophetstown head coaching tenure has seen gradual progress with each season. The Panthers have gone from three wins in Whitebread’s debut campaign of 2023 to five wins the following fall and then six victories last autumn to go with back-to-back appearances in the IHSA Class 2A state playoffs. Along the way, Erie-Prophetstown has made itself into a team to be reckoned with in the Three Rivers Conference’s Rock Division. A year ago, the Panthers went 6-4 overall and finished 3-2 and in third place in league play, two games behind first-place Rockridge and one behind runner-up Newman. Both of those clubs once again look to be the teams to beat in the Rock Division, along with a resurgent Riverdale squad that reached the postseason for the first time since 2011 last fall.

“It’s always our goal to get to the playoffs, and we’ve been there the last two years in a row,” Whitebread said. “These last two years, we’ve finished in the middle [of the TRAC Rock race]. Now, we want to take the next step and be there with teams like Rockridge and Newman. “It’s still a work in progress. We’re not quite there yet.” Along with competing for a conference championship, E-P not only wants to book a third straight trip to the postseason, but to take the next step there as well and pick up the program’s first playoff victory since 2021, one of only two times the Panthers have gotten beyond the first round (the other coming in 2013). “This group wants to do things [in the postseason] that their teammates were not able to accomplish,” said Whitebread, whose club fell 37-12 to Aurora Christian in last year’s opening round. “They’ve got that on their minds

this year, and they’re hungry.” The Panthers do have some holes to fill before their Aug. 21 season opener against reigning Three Rivers Mississippi champion and 3A quarterfinalist Monmouth-Roseville, namely in their passing game. Quarterback and first team All-Three Rivers Rock standout Keegan Winckler (2,300 total yards, 17 touchdown passes, nine rushing TDs) is among the players lost to graduation along with his top two receivers, first team All-Conference pick Gaven Adams and Connor Keegan, who combined for over 1,250 receiving yards and 15 TDs. However, E-P does return the firstteam All-TRAC Rock trio of senior linemen Derek Naftzger and Caleb Reymer and linebacker Evan Steimle, along with a top rushing threat in second-team All-Conference back Tristan Hovey (1,007 yards, five TDs). “We’ve got four of our five starting offensive linemen back, and I felt that

we did a good job of running the ball and with our pass protection,” Whitebread said. “Returning those guys and a top running back, we feel good about that, and we also return all of the guys on our defensive line, which we feel good about. “It all starts up front, and I think our foundation there is very good. It’ll make the job easier for our running backs and linebackers.” In terms of filling Winckler’s shoes at quarterback, Whitebread will look to Steimle, who ran out of the E-P backfield as a halfback last season. Still, the goal remains the same: looking to build on the success of the last two years and continue the Panthers’ upward trend. “We hope to continue to improve and play better like we did last year,” said Whitebread. “We want to continue to play better on both sides of the ball. We bring back a lot of guys with playoff experience from the last two years, and we definitely have some lofty goals.”

BEARS

Bears’ Monangai leaves with injury, Ozzy Trapilo returns By MICHAL DWOJAK mdwojak@shawmedia.com The Chicago Bears thought they had positively swung their injury momentum at the start of Sunday afternoon’s practice with some good news. But the mood quickly soured when they added a new injury to their list. Second-year offensive left tackle Ozzy Trapilo returned to the field Sunday after the team activated him off the Physically Unable to Perform list before practice. But second-year running back Kyle Monangai had to leave practice with an apparent knee injury. Bears head coach Ben Johnson didn’t speak with reporters Sunday, and the team didn’t provide an update on Monangai’s injury. “With Kyle, can’t say enough good things about him,” veteran left guard Joe Thuney said on Sunday at Halas Hall in Lake Forest. “Hopefully it’s nothing too crazy significant. But football is football. It’s tough. I hope he’s alright.” Monangai injured himself during a practice where mostly starters took part

without pads. Roughly half of the team’s roster took part in the practice, mostly starters who hadn’t played in Saturday’s preseason opening win against the Cleveland Browns at Soldier Field. The Bears had started their second team session when Monangai had his second straight carry. Monangai broke free and got tangled up with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett when he went down. Trainers examined Monangai’s right knee and he walked off the field accompanied by a trainer with a limp but under his own power. Monangai is expected to be the second part of the Bears’ two-headed running attack along with D’Andre Swift. The former seventh-round pick had a big season for the Bears, helping the team finish with the third-best rushing attack in the NFL. Monangai rushed for 783 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 4.6 yards per carry. “He was great,” Thuney said. “He came in, just worked really hard. Really detailed in the playbook. Runs so hard. Plays hard for his teammates. Great guy you want to block for. Great in pass pro-

tection. Really a great player.” The extent of Monangai’s injury will dictate what the Bears will do next. They have options with Roschon Johnson, Salvon Ahmed and Brittain Brown. But the Bears might want to upgrade their No. 2 option if it’s a season-long injury. Trapilo’s return Sunday marked an unexpected result from a serious injury. He originally injured his patellar tendon against the Green Bay Packers in January in the NFC Wild Card game. Trapilo missed the following week’s NFC divisional round game against the Los Angeles Rams and the team expected him to miss much of the 2026 season, if not all of it. It’s up in the air what Trapilo’s timeline is from here. Trapilo only took part in individual drills Sunday and went back inside when the team started team drills. But if Trapilo could progress toward working in pads soon, there’s a possibility that he could play on the team’s season opening against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 13. “It’s awesome,” Thuney said. “Just a

credit to him, the staff here, trainers, weight staff, everybody. It’s just great to see him back in the field. Who knows what the timetable will be? But great to see him moving in football positions again, helmet on. He had another great year last year and it’s cool to see him out there.” Trapilo, whom the Bears drafted in the second round last year, became the team’s starter after a revolving door last season. He didn’t win the competition for the starting job at the start of the season when Braxton Jones started the first four games. Jones was then replaced by Theo Benedet. Trapilo started his first game in Week 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers when Benedet was injured and didn’t give up the job. “He’s another guy who came in as a rookie, worked really hard, in his playbook all the time, great teammate,” Trapilo said. “Just a great guy, a guy you want out there. So it’s awesome to see him put the work in the whole offseason to try to get back into position to play again. I’m really happy for him.”

PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: FULTON

The Steamers have gone years I have left, but I still enjoy it 1983 and 1989-2006) and Dale Giesler positivity this fall after Fulton strugtoday as much as when I first came (15 seasons, 1968-82), Lower is look- gled to a 2-7 finish last year, includ97-86 during his tenure here in the fall of 1999. Each and ing at achieving another career mile- ing a 1-7 NUIC mark that placed it By TERRY DUCKETT Shaw Local News Network correspondent When the 2026 prep football season kicks off for Fulton on Aug. 21, it will mark a milestone for longtime head coach Patrick Lower. The 1994 Aledo High School graduate is set to begin his 20th year at the helm of the Steamers, a tenure that has produced nine IHSA state playoff-qualifying teams and consecutive Class 1A Elite Eight teams in 2021 and 2022. Altogether, Lower has been with the Fulton program for about three decades, having spent seven seasons on the staff of his predecessor, Jim Proud, before taking the head-coaching reins in 2007 following Proud’s retirement. “In a lot of ways, it seems like [the time] has gone by really fast,” Lower said. “I don’t know how many more

every day, and every year, I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. “Since 1968, Fulton has only had four head football coaches, and to me, that’s one of the proudest things about our program. It says a lot about the program and about our community.” Lower points to his own playing days in Aledo, where he was a key part of back-to-back 2A semifinal squads in 1992 and 1993 under coach Bill McCarty, as the time that cemented his ongoing love for the gridiron. “Growing up in Aledo and playing for coach McCarty, coach [Bill] Breeden and coach [Mike] Schmitz, that put a lot of love of the game in my heart that’s still there,” he said. Now the longest-tenured coach in Steamer history behind Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Famers Proud (19 seasons,

stone in 2026. Owner of a 97-86 career record, he stands just three wins shy of the 100-victory mark, a standard Lower can reach as early as Sept. 4 when the Steamers travel to Dakota for their Northwest Upstate Illini Conference opener. But for him, it has been more about sharing his love and enjoyment of the sport with the players in his charge than about the numbers. “The main thing I try to tell every team is that it’s such a positive experience to play high school football. That’s what I want for these guys,” Lower said. “I want them to be happy to have played for Fulton, to have positive thoughts and memories of their time here, and to know how much I care about them.” Entering a new season featuring an expanded IHSA playoff that sees each class going from 32 to 48 qualifiers, Lower is hoping for much more

eighth out of nine teams. “We played a lot of young kids last year, and it was about learning to play the game at this level,” he said. “We took our lumps, but we stayed positive and understood where we were as a team, and I hope we’ve turned the page. “We’re still fairly young, but we’re a year older now, and we’ve got quite a bit of experience back that I feel is going to pay off this year, next year, even three years from now.” Among the returning Steamers, one player who provides plenty of hope for the future is sophomore fullback Wyatt Connor. He racked up 486 yards on 77 carries with six touchdowns last fall. Senior end Ben Huizenga had 11 receptions for 216 yards and two TDs in 2025. Junior running back Blaze Damhoff tallied 238 total yards and four TDs.

PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW: MORRISON

Morrison looks to build off of last season’s finish The Mustangs won two of their last three games By TERRY DUCKETT Shaw Local News Network correspondent Its second year of competition in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference proved to be just as hard as its first for Morrison. After going 3-6 in their 2024 NUIC debut season, the Mustangs found a rugged 2025 schedule difficult to navigate for the first two-thirds of the season, and they finished 2-7. In its first six games last season, Morrison faced six IHSA playoff qualifiers, capped by consecutive meetings with conference champion and Class 1A semifinalist Stockton followed by eventual 1A state champion Lena-Winslow.

That translated into an 0-6 start that knocked the Mustangs out of playoff contention. However, the last three weeks of 2025 gave third-year coach Nate Vandermyde’s team something to build on as the Mustangs won two of their last three games. The highlight of those two wins was a 31-21 home victory over rival Fulton in Week 8 in the teams’ annual Wooden Shoe Bowl. “We had a slow start, but we were able to finish on more of a high note,” said coach Vandermyde, a 2008 Morrison graduate. “We want to work on building on that. We want to hit the ground running and experience more growth this year.” But in addition to playing in one of the state’s top 1A leagues, albeit reduced from nine to eight teams with the Durand-Pecatonica co-op’s

departure for the Big Northern Conference, Morrison has a numbers crunch to deal with. “We’ll have 26 players in total, so we won’t have a JV team this fall,” coach Vandermyde said. “With where our numbers are at, we felt like [having varsity and JV teams] would stretch our kids too thin and open us up to injuries, and we want to do everything we can to keep them safe. “We’ve got a decent amount of sophomores coming up, but we’re definitely going to be young and have growing pains. They’ll get thrown into the thick of it and see what it’s all about. “There’s very little comparison to varsity experience,” he said. “Playing JV, you do get football experience, but varsity experience is hard to replicate.” While young and having lost 13

players to graduation, the Mustangs will not be totally lacking in experience when they take the field later this month. Three two-way starters return in the senior duo of lineman Caleb Carroll and wide receiver/defensive back Josh McDearmon and junior lineman Noah Stout. Vandermyde also will look to the junior trio of Xavier Baldwin (RB/LB), Ethan Bush (OL/LB) and Charles Pruis (QB/DB) to be key contributors. “We feel like there’ll be an opportunity for the underclassmen to step up, learn their roles and contribute to the team,” said Vandermyde, whose club opens up NUIC play on Sept. 4 at home against Galena. “One of the main things will be to stay healthy and keep our numbers where they’re at, so we can build a solid program for years to come.”
