How the system broke down
By CHARLENE BIELEMA cbielema@shawmedia.com A six-month legal battle in Whiteside County has exposed a systemic breakdown in how Illinois assembles juries – one that may have affected trials across the state. In April, when county officials attempted to create a new jury panel using the state’s master list and jury selection software, they discovered something alarming: the panel included at least 60 dead people. One had been dead for 35 years. No jurors were younger than 42. The median age was 72. At least 52 potential jurors were age 90 or older, and at least one would have been 135 if still living. The discovery has prompted both the county’s top prosecutor and a defense attorney to call on the state judiciary to investigate jury selection practices statewide. “The problems that came to light here must necessarily exist elsewhere,” said Sterling defense attorney James Mertes, who uncovered

July hearing, she called on state agencies to “listen and act on the numerous issues that have been uncovered.”
The trouble began in February when Mertes challenged how the Whiteside County Circuit Clerk’s Office selected jury panels. His investigation revealed that the county had systematically excluded entire groups of people from jury duty for years: anyone younger than 22, anyone older than 79, anyone who owed money to the court, anyone with any criminal history dating back to 1989 and anyone involved in a pending court case. That exclusionary process had been handed down from one circuit clerk to the next – a generational practice that no one had questioned until Mertes challenged it. Two jury panels were dismissed as a result. In April, county officials tried again, this time using the state’s master jury list, jury management software and ChatGPT to randomly select 200 jurors with no exclusion criteria applied.

In the First Amendment the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors.” – Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black
Scientists are learning about gut bacteria and aging BEYOND TRIM Sherry DeWalt – CGH Health Scientists are learning a lot about how bacteria in our gut can affect our health. One of the more recent discoveries has linked the presence of beneficial bacteria in our gut to our lifespan, and perhaps more importantly, to our “health-span.” The health span is the number of years that we can live without chronic disease in a healthy, independent and resilient state. The trillions of bacteria living in our guts can be divided into several different strains. Some strains are beneficial, and others are not. Younger, healthier people tend to have a greater diversity of bacteria with a balance of more good than bad. As we age, the population of bacte-
ria can shift. But scientists have noticed that the gut bacteria in especially long-lived people tend to look “younger” than expected for their age. For example, there is a greater abundance of beneficial bacteria, a better balance of “good” to “bad” bacteria, and greater production of short-chain fatty acids that help to keep the cells lining the gut and colon healthy, among other things. The characteristics of a younger, healthier gut equate to less inflammation, a healthier immune system and better metabolism. Since inflammation plays a key role in cardiovascular health and cancer, a healthy immune system helps us to avoid infection and promotes recovery from illness, and a better metabolism helps us to avoid excess weight that can contribute to increased risk of diabetes and related health problems, it makes sense that a younger “gut” can result in a longer, healthier life. How can you improve and maintain

a healthy balance of gut bacteria? Here are some suggestions: • Eat a variety of fiber-rich foods. Vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, whole grains, nuts and seeds feed beneficial microbes and support the production of beneficial fatty acids. • Include fermented foods (if tolerated). Yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, sourdough bread and vinegar can add microbial variety to the diet. • Limit ultra-processed foods. Diets high in added sugar, refined starches (white bread, white rice, enriched pasta, instant potatoes, and processed breakfast cereals) and low-quality fats may reduce microbial diversity and promote inflammation. • Stay physically active. Building the next generation of teachers Teachers shape our lives, our communities, and our future generations. If you ever need a simple conversational starter, ask someone who their favorite teacher was. Without hesitation, they will likely share a name, a story, and a memory of someone who made a lasting impact on their life. Teaching truly is the profession of professions. It all starts there. The Sauk Valley is an incredible place to live, work, and play. Our communities have always rallied together when faced with challenges, especially when there is a sense of urgency and a shared purpose. Today, one of those challenges is clear: We must address the declining interest in the teaching profession. At Sauk Valley Community College, we not only are hearing this from our K-12 leaders and educators, but from our industries. Great teachers are invaluable. This challenge does not only impact our school districts. It impacts every career, every industry, and every future generation. Without great teachers in the Sauk Valley, we do not have
COMMUNITY VIEWS Jon Mandrell great health care professionals, public safety officials, agriculture leaders, engineers, welders, accountants, entrepreneurs, and countless others who contribute to the strength of the Sauk Valley and beyond. Our great faculty at SVCC does not exist without great educators who shape and inspire them. It all starts with great teachers. So, what can we do about it? Just as we have done many times before, the Sauk Valley is coming together to find solutions. Across our region, innovative partnerships and programs are creating new pathways into education. For example, Sterling Public Schools has created “SPS University,” an initiative that invests in current employees by supporting their journey back to school to become certified teachers.
This pathway can include coursework through Sauk Valley Community College, online institutions, or Northern Illinois University’s LEAP Program. LEAP, the Licensed Educator Accelerator Program, is a tuition-free program provided through Northern Illinois University and offered locally on the SVCC campus. It provides aspiring educators, including local paraprofessionals, with a pathway to earn a bachelor’s degree and become licensed teachers. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sara Dail recently told me, “What began as a response to a teacher shortage has become a long-term workforce strategy. SPS University has shown us that with thoughtful planning, strong partnerships, and a willingness to think differently, school districts can successfully develop and retain their own exceptional teachers.” These grow-your-own programs are not only innovative; they represent an investment in the talented individuals already serving our students and communities. Another exciting opportunity is the
Sauk Valley Community College Impact Program. Currently, 2,008 students in grades 9-12, as well as first-year SVCC students, are participating in the program. An incredible 132,080 volunteer hours have also been completed as part! If these students persist, complete their community service and other requirements, and even a fraction choose education as their career pathway, we will have significantly strengthened our teacher pipeline for years to come. As SVCC Vice President of Advancement Dr. Lori Cortez often reminds us, “Every investment in an SVCC Impact student is an investment in the future teachers who will strengthen our communities for generations to come.” Additionally, SVCC currently has approximately 80 Education majors pursuing their dreams of becoming teachers. This is encouraging news. We also must thank our local Regional Office of Education, which works tirelessly not only to train and

• MANDRELL advance our teachers, but also to recruit them. Regional Office of Education Superintendent Chris Tennyson and his staff are great partners to the college and our school districts. Dr. Anji Garza of the ROE and her staff host a highly successful education symposium each year on our campus, consisting of approximately 100 local high school students who aspire to be teachers. We are proud to work closely with them on our shared purpose in teacher recruitment. Students are still choosing education. They are still answering the call to serve. They are still choosing a profession that changes lives. Now it is our responsibility as a community to support them, encourage them, and applaud them for that decision. Because when we invest in teachers, we invest in everything that comes after.

Tractors make their way out of the Whiteside County Fairgrounds in Morrison on Aug. 11, 2025, for the annual tractor ride.
155th ANNUAL WHITESIDE COUNTY FAIR
Antique tractor owners who display at fair to each receive a plaque SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com Antique tractor buffs will have a heyday at this year’s 155th annual Whiteside County Fair, which runs Aug. 18 to 22, according to organizers. People who display an antique tractor at this year’s Whiteside County Fair in Morrison will receive a 155th Whiteside County Fair plaque to display on their tractor. The exhibitors will fire up their
engines for the parade about one hour before the start of that evening’s truck and tractor pulls at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Anyone displaying their antique farm tractor at the 2026 Whiteside County Fair will be required to purchase a season membership pass, which will automatically enter them into the exhibition. Due to space constraints, the display will be limited to “restored or good original” tractors. The fair also welcomes
for display hit-and-miss engines that are in working order. No garden tractors or implements are allowed unless the implements are mounted to the tractor. Registration is recommended and can be done by contacting Ron Shank at 815-213-4690. For more information about these, or any other fair events, check out the fair’s website at www.whitesidecountyfair.org. The fairgrounds are located at 201 W. Winfield St. in Morrison.
A Morrison man has been charged with four sex offenses, including predatory criminal sexual assault, according to Whiteside County court records and the Illinois State Police. ISP special agents took Brian S. Coers, 53, into custody after a search warrant was served at a Morrison home on Wednesday, according to an ISP news release. He is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim younger than 13, alleged to have occurred in May 2021; and two counts of criminal sexual assault with force and one count of criminal sexual assault of a family member younger than 18, all alleged to have occurred on Oct. 1, 2022. According to the ISP, that agency opened an investigation in May in connection with allegations of sex crimes in Wisconsin and Illinois. ISP special agents executed a search warrant Wednesday at his residence in the 500 block of Barden Street in Morrison, according to the release. ISP also collected additional electronic devices, which are pending examination. Coers is being held in the Whiteside County Jail pending a court appearance set for 1 p.m. Friday. The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin, Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, Savanna Police Department, Morrison Police Department, the Madison, Wisconsin, FBI office, ISP SWAT, ISP Patrol, and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office of Forensics assisted with the investigation.

Celebrity romance scams pop up across social media Sheriff’s deputies responded last week to rural Clinton County, Iowa, to meet a man on a domestic situation. “Larry,” in his early 70s, reported that his wife, “Lois,” also in her early 70s, just announced her intention to divorce him. It happens. But the story took an immediate twist. His wife wanted the divorce to allow her to marry an actor on a Netflix series. Lois fell for a celebrity imposter. Lois always liked this Netflix series. She saw a Facebook post that appeared as posted by the actor. She commented on the post. She got a reply, inviting more communication on another platform, Telegram. After exchanging messages for several weeks, the actor asked for Lois’s personal information to allow him to apply for a credit card. When the card was issued, the actor instructed Lois to use it to buy Apple gift cards and send him the access codes. The actor
SENIORS VS. CRIME Randy Meier paid for his management team with Apple gift cards. In return, the actor promised to send regular payments to the credit card company. And to marry Lois. Lois carried out her part of the bargain. Over time, she bought and sent $5,000 in gift cards to the actor. He did make regular payments on the credit card, but with phony checks, which did not clear. Lois never filed for divorce. People she trusted convinced her she was badly misled and a fraud victim. Celebrity romance scams are very common. Three weeks ago, a credit union officer and I talked and argued
for 45 minutes with a 62-year-old widow before persuading her the person posing as John Camo Smith, a TikTok creator, was a hoax. The imposter wanted her to buy a house with him, for them to live in when married. She lost a great deal of her retirement account before realizing the truth. Social media is pretty crowded with crooks posing as celebrities. And using the term “celebrities” casts a wide net. Criminals pose as professional athletes, golf pros, wrestlers, TikTok personalities, musicians, and actors from streaming shows, just to name a few. If someone you admire or respect posts on social media, can you ever be sure their profile is authentic? Facebook uses a verification method displaying a blue check for profiles and accounts that are authentic. To quote them: “A Facebook blue tick is a verification badge that confirms an account is the authentic pres-
ence of a real person, public figure, brand, or organization. You can get a blue tick through free selfie verification, a paid subscription, or by requesting verification for notable entities.” But there is another test for authenticity. Anytime your celebrity friend asks you for money, or some financial favor, consider them a fraud. Stop communication. Flag the account with its platform. And don’t look back.

Arellano’s legislation lowers cost of becoming an electronic notary SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com Illinois businesses and professionals will soon see lower costs to become certified electronic notaries as a result of legislation sponsored by state Sen. Li Arellano Jr., R-Dixon, and signed into law July 24. “What I love about this bill is that it’s a great example of what we should be doing in Illinois: lowering costs,” Arellano said. “While it’s not going to save you hundreds of dollars, it might be one
of the only bills passed this year that does nothing other than save Illinoisans money. We need to be doing more of that.” Under current law, individuals who become a notary must pay an additional $25 fee to become an electronic notary public in Illinois, which he said is an example of double taxation and fees that discourage state commerce. Working alongside liaisons at the Illinois Secretary of State, Arellano sponsored Senate Bill 1573, which waives that additional fee for two years as the
Secretary of State works on a permanent improvement. This reduces upfront costs and makes it easier for more Illinoisans to become certified as electronic notaries. “For years, Illinois businesses have had to increasingly rely on out-of-state notaries to get some types of transactions done,” Arellano said. “Now we’ll be able to keep that work here in Illinois while making it easier for our own professionals to step in and meet that need.” Notaries play a key role in verifying signatures and ensuring the integrity of
important documents. The new law is especially beneficial for industries such as real estate, legal services and small businesses involved in interstate commerce. By reducing upfront costs, the measure helps expand access to notary services across the state. Senate Bill 1573 was developed after discussion with the Peoria business community about challenges facing interstate competitiveness. After passage in the Senate, it was sponsored in the Illinois House by state Rep. Ryan Spain, R-Peoria.

cern: there is no oversight of how county clerks use the software. “I am not aware of anybody whose job it is to oversee that,” Goodin testified. Mertes and Buckwalter say the problem extends beyond Whiteside County. Different counties use different jury selection software – McHenry County uses one system, Will County uses another, Kane County uses a third – creating what Mertes called “no uniformity and highly variable degrees of oversight and understanding throughout the state.” “This represents an alarming systemic problem,” he said.
ment. A University of Chicago mathematician brought in by Mertes testified that the overpopulation creates statistical impossibilities. When Whiteside County reduced its 48,300-name master list to 12,500 names, from which 100 were selected for jury duty, five of those names also had appeared on previous jury pools over the prior four months –something the mathematician described as “statistically impossible.” “Any county that first reduces its master list to a smaller pool creates a class of people who have no opportunity to be selected during that list year,” said Professor Moon Duchin of the University of Chicago.

• JURY SYSTEM
Continued from page 7 That’s when they found the dead jurors, which Mertes said was the result of a user error enabled by “a lack of any safeguards to prevent it.” Mertes contends the circuit clerk’s office used the jury software to errantly pull from old records, dating back decades, that had never been purged from the system. “Those who died years ago were never removed, and a disproportionate number of older jurors continued to appear on potential juror lists,” Mertes said during a May hearing.
The software problem
Whiteside County uses PC JIMS Jury software, created about 35 years ago, to convert the state-provided master list into monthly jury panels. The software is used by 42 of Illinois’s 102 counties. During a July hearing, Kayte Goodin, CEO of the company that created the software, testified that the April disaster likely resulted from how the software was used. If county officials asked the software to randomize a broad range of juror sequence numbers – some assigned decades ago – the system would pull up people who had been assigned those numbers long ago and have since died or aged significantly. But Mertes pressed a larger con-
The state’s master list may also be flawed
Beyond the software, questions remain about the state’s master jury lists themselves. Whiteside County’s list contained more than 48,000 names – 4,500 more than the entire adult population of the county. The Administrative Office of Illinois Courts supplies that list to each county, drawing from voter registration, driver’s license holders, identification card holders and unemployment insurance claimants. When Mertes questioned Gaylord Robinson, the AOIC’s chief information officer, about the overpopulation, Robinson said, “I don’t know.” He also said he had not compared the number of names to the U.S. Census data for the county. The AOIC declined further com-
What happens next
At a July 15 hearing, Mertes, Buckwalter and Whiteside County Circuit Judge James Heuerman agreed that the July jury panel now is “fairly representative of the racial and ethnic composition of the county’s population,” clearing the way for the original trial – Michael Cover’s case – to begin Aug. 11. But both Mertes and Buckwalter say the real work must happen at the state level. The Illinois Supreme Court is forming a task force to evaluate how master lists are compiled, Mertes said. “Several layers of different systemic irregularities and problems in statewide jury empanelment have been identified,” Mertes said. “They persist still.”

“Ninth Baby Born In Stork Derby.” Whaaa? Now that’s a headline I could not ignore. I was online, researching old newspaper archives. Then this short news item popped from the Aug. 19, 1936, issue of the Morris Herald News. It was front page news under a photo of Mrs. Gus Graziano. She just had her ninth baby, a son, putting her among the leaders in a Toronto “stork derby.” This race was ending on Oct. 31 and it was getting tense. A Mrs. John Nagle had her tenth child earlier in August. (I’m not sure how Mrs. Graziano was going to catch up.) By now you’re probably scratching the same itch I had. What the hey is a stork derby? And why would women want to have 10 or more babies? It probably had something to do with the cash prize of $500,000. That buys a lot of diapers, especially in 1936. The money was part of a bizarre last will and testament crafted by a wealthy Toronto lawyer, Charles Vance Millar. I had to know more about this strange will that had to be validated by the Supreme Court of Canada. I found lots of
PAPERWORK Lonny Cain
background via www.Smithsonianmag. com – more than I can share. (I highly recommend the article by Jordan Friedman.) Let me share some fascinating highlights. Millar got rich by investing in breweries, real estate and infrastructure. At 72, he died from a heart attack on Halloween in 1926. He was a prankster. He’d put money on a sidewalk and hide to watch how people reacted. He never married. Had no children or close living relatives. His will set aside about 500,000 Canadian dollars, worth millions today, for the Toronto mother who gave birth to the most children over the next 10 years after his death. The prize would be divided equally if there was a tie. The media loved it, following legal battles over the will and what types of children could be counted, such as stillborn or those born “illegitimate” to unwed
parents. The press put an intense spotlight on women competing, which some found invasive and stressful. A Canadian TV movie was produced in 2002 on the baby race. Friedman reported how the baby derby flamed controversy in Depression-era Canada, where birth control was illegal, but large families were criticized and ridiculed. There also was growing concern that some immigrant “foreigner” might win the contest. The article notes how some women had to be hospitalized for operations and blood transfusions. In 1936, Ontario Premier Mitchell Hepburn called the derby “the most revolting, disgusting exhibition ever put on in a civilized country.” The derby ended in a tie among four families with nine children. One of the four was Mrs. John Nagle, who was mentioned in the article I found. I’m guessing the news item I discovered was in error about a 10th child. That would make more sense. Millar’s motives for the stork derby are not clear, but apparently he enjoyed challenging the morality and standards of others. Millar himself described his
will as “necessarily uncommon and capricious.” This can be seen since he also left brewery shares to seven Protestant ministers who supported Prohibition and gave joint ownership of a Jamaican vacation home to three local lawyers who despised each other. And he gave shares in the Ontario Jockey Club to some outspoken opponents of horse racing. Friedman quoted Marty Gervais, a Canadian author and historian, about what drove women to participate: “I think it was desperation. I think it was a sign of the times. People wanted to get rich; people wanted to have money. And I think it just ignited that kind of desperation, essentially.” Friedman concluded with this observation: “A bizarre saga in Canadian history, it now serves as a vehicle for exploring the social, cultural and moral issues of the early 20th century.”

cute the technique that we’re asking him to execute,” Allen said. “I see him playing with some confidence. I see him competing and being aggressive and so those are all things that we want to see. He’s continued to get a little bit better every single day that he’s been out there so that’s been good to see.”
lower the intensity of practice Sunday even though the team had to move indoors after a thunderstorm delay. The starters ended practice with a long drive drill as Johnson ran 12 straight plays. Running back D’Andre Swift had a good session, putting together some nice long runs behind solid blocking from the offensive line. Newly signed safety Xavier Woods intercepted a Hail Marylike pass during the session while quarterback Caleb Williams scrambled on a play for a run that was close to a touchdown. The offense showed signs of fatigue toward the later part of the drill when it was called for two straight false start penalties. But Williams ended the drill with a nice pass to Jahdae Walker to cap things off. The starting offense also executed on its situational drill where it led by a point with 2:29 left in the game. Swift came through with a pair of nice runs that went deep into the defense’s territory to secure the win. Stevenson intercepted a pass earlier in practice a day after he battled an injury in Saturday’s practice.
Bears lose another offensive weapon
Left tackle battle update
By MICHAL DWOJAK mdwojak@shawmedia.com Gervon Dexter Sr. is solely staying where his feet are at this training camp. The fourth-year Chicago Bears defensive tackle faces plenty of questions as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. But Dexter is only focused on what he could do during camp in order to earn an extension from the team. “I came into this year solely focused on just improving and getting better and understanding that all of that stuff is going to work itself out,” Dexter said at Halas Hall in Lake Forest on Sunday. “If I get better and do the things I need to do and take care of the things I need to take care of, everything always falls into place.” Dexter and the Bears are hoping that comes to fruition in the coming months. Bears general manager Ryan Poles selected Dexter in the second round of the 2023 draft in the hopes that he could become a difference-making tackle in former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus’ defense. But over three seasons, Dexter has flashed his talent but hasn’t kept it up at a consistent pace. Dexter played in all 17 games last season for the second time in his career. He had a career-high six sacks last year to go along with 11 quarterback hits and six tackles for loss. But the numbers didn’t match what Poles and the Bears had hoped for Dexter when they drafted him so high. In order to fix that, Dexter went back to the basics, as did the rest of the Bears’ defensive line. Bears coaches preached fundamentals and technique during spring workouts to improve a sluggish pass and run defense. Bears coaches had a plan for how to fix Dexter’s and others’ issues. They started from scratch, his stance. Dexter didn’t realize until the spring that he wasn’t in a good stance last season, which caused him to play with more of a delay. “That’s one of the biggest improvements I’ve made coming into this year is just knocking the line of scrimmage back, and that’s what this staff wants,” Dexter said. “They want you to set a new line of scrimmage, so I worked on that and I’ve seen a lot of improvement.” Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has seen improvement from Dexter from the spring and into the first few

Dexter will play a huge role in the Bears’ defensive success this season. If Dexter can play up to this potential and become disruptive from the middle, that will have a domino effect for the rest of the defense. “I think he’s gotten better,” Allen said. “I’ve seen more consistency, I’ve seen more ability to come off and strike the line of scrimmage. I think with any of these guys, regardless of whether it’s a contract year, no contract year, you want to see guys go out there and compete and perform at a high level. And consistently. That’s what we’re looking for in him and everybody else.”
Malik Muhammad impressing
Through 10 practices, rookie cornerback Malik Muhammad is catching the eyes of the coaching staff. Just not where many expected heading into camp. Muhammad, whom the Bears selected in the fourth round of this year’s draft, was expected to compete with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson for a starting outside spot opposite of Jaylon Johnson. But injuries to slot cornerback Kyler Gordon and other replacements have forced the Bears to put Muhammad at the spot. Muhammad took all of the slot cornerback spots with the first team Sunday for a second straight day. He hadn’t played the spot in college but has impressed coaches with how he’s looked so far. “I see him going out and trying to exe-
Chicago lost another young offensive weapon at Sunday’s practice. Rookie wide receiver Zavion Thomas left practice during 7-on-7 drills. He walked off the field along with a trainer with a limp. The news came a day after wide receiver Luther Burden III left Saturday’s practice with an apparent injury. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Burden suffered a groin injury and should miss a little bit of time. Safety Cam Lewis also didn’t practice a day after he had to be taken away from practice on a cart. Allen told reporters before practice that he wouldn’t take part in Sunday’s practice but didn’t have a timeline for how long Lewis would be out. Defensive end Montez Sweat, left tackle Braxton Jones, linebackers T.J. Edwards and D’Marco Jackson, cornerbacks Jaylon Jones and Terell Smith and wide receiver Kyron Hudson continued to miss practice.
With Braxton Jones’ continued absence, the Bears continued their rotation at the left tackle competition. Kiran Amegadjie mostly worked with the first team offense Sunday, a day after Jedrick Wills Jr. had gotten most of the work with the unit. Wills worked at times with the first team Sunday. Both tackles had their struggles at times. Defensive end Daniel Hardy got the best of Wills once again in one-on-one drills. Wills also got pushed back during a team drills and came close to stepping on Williams’ foot. Amegadjie held his own at times but struggled in other portions.
Roster moves
The Bears added more depth to their secondary after Lewis’ injury. They signed cornerback Beanie Bishop and waived long snapper Luke Elkin. Bishop spent the last year on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ and New Orleans Saints’ practice squads in 2025. Elkin had been in a competition for the starting long snapper job, which will seemingly go to rookie Practice notes Bears head coach Ben Johnson didn’t Beau Gardner now.
