SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

Kenny Ryals will be honored as the 2026 Friend of the Fair at the 155th annual Whiteside County Fair, which runs Tuesday, Aug. 18, to Saturday, Aug. 22, in Morrison, fair directors announced.

The Whiteside County Fair Board of Directors names a Friend of the Fair each year to recognize people it considers integral to the fair, according to a news release.

Ryals’ involvement with the fair began 50 years ago, when he worked alongside his parents at age 10, serving popcorn,

cotton candy and candy apples, according to the release. Forty-one years ago, he married Denise, who also was raised in the concessions business. According to the release, the couple and their adult sons, Blake and Grant, continue the family tradition at the fair.

In a statement shared by the fair, Ryals said. “To begin, this fair and its patrons are truly our dear friends. ... As the Friend of the Fair honor beautifully demonstrates, a fair and a business like ours cannot succeed without an extended family of friends,” Ryals said in the statement. “We are deeply honored to be invited back year after year. The Whiteside County Fair remains one of our absolute favorites, and building a relationship

Morrison crowd eyes plans for US 30 reconstruction

When Illinois Department of Transportation developers show up in Morrison to gather information about plans for enhancing U.S. 30 through town, one message always comes back loud and clear.

“The big concern right now is how soon can we get this built,” said Mike Kuehn, program development engineer for IDOT District 2, who was among a group of IDOT officials that attended a five-hour town meeting July 21 at Morrison’s Odell Public Library.

More than 100 people turned out that afternoon to take a second look at potential plans for a $23 million upgrade to U.S. 30 from one end of town to the other.

Residents were able to talk to IDOT officials about the project and look at large maps that included the names of adjacent property owners and their parcel locations.

Morrison sees between 9,000 and 10,000 vehicles a day along U.S. 30,

which carries motorists either west toward Iowa or east to Sterling/Rock Falls as it slices through the city of 4,100 people. The project is focused on the portion of U.S. 30 that begins 0.1 miles west of Illinois 78, at the western edge of town, to 0.2 miles east of Jackson Street, which is on the city’s eastern edge.

The plan is to reconstruct pavement and drainage systems constructed in the early 1900s, and add turn lanes and a bi-directional turn lane to help with turning movements and congestion.

The project also includes culvert and safety improvements as needed and pedestrian, Americans with Disabilities Act, and bicycle accommodations as per IDOT’s Complete Streets policy.

While the state is heading toward construction in 2028-29, a lot of work still needs to be done to get to that point.

The project is formally in the first stage of development, with IDOT now conducting a preliminary engineering and environmental study. Feed -

back gathered from a town hall meeting in July 2025 was analyzed and rolled into the plans presented at the most recent town hall.

Kuehn said options include one that would boost U.S. 30 from a twolane highway to three lanes throughout the designated area, while another would place two-lane and three-lane traffic intermittently throughout the corridor.

A third option would keep the current layout as is but enhance the highway’s pavement and drainage conditions and add the planned pedestrian, ADA and bicycle accommodations.

Once the reconstruction plan is selected, work will be done to get contracts put together, and IDOT will be talking with landowners affected by the reconstruction. Kuehn said the parcels will need to be appraised, and then IDOT will talk to and negotiate with about 100 landowners.

Kuehn acknowledged that people are concerned about how adjacent property owners will be affected, but

“there is a lot of recognition that we need to do something out here to improve the roadway and improve traffic conditions and get it done as quickly as possible,” he said.

The original road was built in the 1930s, according to IDOT. Throughout the years, a portion from Jackson Street to Bishop Road on the east edge of town and a stretch of U.S. 30 on the west side from Garden Plain Road to Milnes Drive have undergone widening, patching and resurfacing projects.

IDOT is continuing to take public comments about the project, and all received by Aug. 20 will be part of the official public meeting record. IDOT plans to host another public meeting in Morrison in the coming months, Kuehn said.

Morrison schools become 5th district to reach SVCC Impact Program funding goal

SHAW LOCAL NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com

The Sauk Valley College Foundation has reached another milestone.

Morrison High School students who earn their tuition through the Sauk Valley Community College Impact Program will have their tuition covered forever.

As a result of a handful of recent donations, the Foundation has announced the Mustang Endowment Challenge has officially reached its funding goal of $450,000.

This achievement ensures every Morrison High School student who enrolls in the Impact Program and completes their required volunteer service hours can attend Sauk Valley Community College tuition-free for up to three years.

Since the creation of the program, Morrison Impact students have completed more than 8,500 hours of service. With the Mustang Endowment fully funded, Morrison High School becomes the fifth school district to reach this distinction. The other fully funded districts are Fulton, Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico, Milledgeville and Polo. Amboy is currently working on a campaign to endow its district.

For more information about the Impact Program and how it supports students, visit svcc.edu/impact.

The Morrison City Council on July 13 presented a $5,000 gift to the Mustang Endowment Challenge. Six Sauk Valley volleyball storylines to watch this season

Here are six storylines to watch this upcoming girls volleyball season in the Sauk Valley area.

How will the Newman Comets follow last year’s upswing?

In last year’s postseason, the seventh-seeded Comets took down second-seeded Sherrard 25-18, 9-25, 26-24 in a Class 1A regional semifinal matchup before falling 25-18, 25-16 to Three Rivers rival Princeton.

Newman took a big step in the right direction last year, finishing 18-19 after a 2-32-1 season.

Brooklyn Smith, Bella Lanning, Lucy McClain and Ruby Burger were all-conference selections.

Newman, which took fourth at state in the 2022-23 season, could be set for another step forward.

Will Rock Falls continue to improve?

Last postseason, the Rockets ran into a Riverdale team in the regional semifinals that went on to finish third at state in Class 2A as a No. 5 seed.

Rock Falls went 21-15 last season and 18-18 the year before after a thirdplace finish at state in 2024.

Senior Kaltrina Lecaj was an AllBig Northern Conference first-team pick last year after 270 kills, 37 aces, 25 blocks and 271 digs.

Junior Miley Bickett is also set to return as setter.

Are the Fulton Steaners set for a deeper postseason run?

The Steamers entered the postseason last year as a No. 3 seed before falling in a Class 1A regional matchup to second-seeded Stockton 25-21, 10-25, 25-18. Fulton had a 12-game win streak before the postseason setback.

Kerby Germann was an IVCA AllState second-team pick and All-NUIC first-pick selection as a freshman after 346 kills and 281 digs with 39 aces.

Germann is set to join returning outside hitter and IVCA All-State honorable mention Averi Bush and junior Chloe Wilkin, a recent Southern Illinois University commit.

Can Sterling’s Golden Warriors get back to a regional title match?

sets the ball against Erie-Prophetstown.

year’s postseason in 3A as a No. 4 seed and took top-seeded Morris to three sets before a 21-25, 25-9, 25-22 setback in the regional finals.

Sterling is set to return some key players, including seniors Kasey Weeks, Nia Harris, Megan Stutzke and Sydney Giffin.

Sterling is looking for its first regional title since the 2021-22 season.

How will Dixon follow up last year’s Big Northern Conference title?

The Duchess have won at least 22 games in three of the last four seasons, going 22-10 last year and 8-1 in the BNC.

They fell just short in a 3A regional final to Sycamore 13-25, 26-24, 25-23.

It was a senior-laden class last year, including the SVM Player of the Year, Leah Carlson.

It could be a rebuilding year for Dixon after losing so much produc -

tion to graduations.

How will some area teams look without last year’s stars?

Eastland’s Trixie Carroll (Bradley), Erie-Prophetstown’s Lauren Abbott (Wisconsin-Platteville), Dixon’s Leah Carlson (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) and Milledgeville’s Kendra Kingsby (Aurora University) are among the graduating standouts who will be playing at the next level.

Carroll had a whopping 552 kills last season. Abbott, Brynn Brown, Ashlyn Johnson and Kaylee Keegan were all key seniors for the Panthers.

Carlson was also one of five key seniors for the Duchesses, including Morgan Hargrave, Izzy Queckboerner, Presley Lappin and Yui Santos.

It will be interesting to see who can step in with plenty of production available for multiple teams in the area.

FOOTBALL

Sauk Valley area’s 10 games to watch

With the IHSA releasing football schedules from around the state, here is a look at 10 games to watch in the Sauk Valley area this fall. All games are at 7 p.m. on Fridays.

Byron at Dixon, Sept. 4

The Dukes and Tigers have been at the top of the class in the Big Northern Conference in recent years. Last year’s 28-7 loss at Byron was Dixon’s only regular-season loss. The Dukes followed it with shutouts in five of their next six games. Dixon has taken second in the BNC the last three years. Byron went on to win the Class 3A state title last season.

Newman at Rockridge, Oct. 9

This is a matchup of last year’s top two teams in the Three Rivers Rock. The Rockets won 26-6 last season in Week 5 en route to a 5-0 conference finish, while Newman finished 4-1. Newman won 15-7 in 2024 and won the conference title.

Metamora at Sterling, Aug. 21

The Golden Warriors open the season against a good Redbirds team for the second year in a row. Metamora won 43-14 last season and went on to finish 8-3. Sterling also has non-conference games against Hansberry of the Chicago Public – Blue South in Week 2 and Hammond Morton from Indiana in Week 6.

Amboy at Polo, Sept. 18

This is a rematch of last year’s I8FA championship, which Amboy won 30-20 to earn its third straight title. The Clippers came back after Polo led 14-0. Both teams have been two of the best in the league, combining for five I8FA titles since 2019. Polo also takes on Milledgeville in the “Battle of the Blacktop” game the week before this game.

Oregon at Genoa-Kingston, Oct. 29

These two teams faced off to open the season last year with Oregon winning 27-20 on the road. The Hawks went on to finish third in the BNC, while G-K finished fourth. The BNC looks to be even more competitive with Du-Pec joining the conference.

United Township at Sterling, Sept. 11

This is Sterling’s Western Big 6 Conference home opener in Week 4. Sterling nearly matched its scoring season-high in last year’s 49-28 road win over the Panthers to follow up a loss to Moline. Sterling went on to finish 5-2 and take third in the Big 6.

Dixon at Durand-Pecatonica, Oct. 16

The Dukes close the regular season with the newest addition to the BNC. The Rivermen finished 7-4 last season in the NUIC and reached the second round of the playoffs before falling 38-12 to Byron.

Morrison at Fulton, Oct. 9

Although both teams are coming off down seasons, the Wooden Shoe trophy rivalry game is always one each team has circled. The Mustangs won 31-21 last season and lead the all-time series 51-30-5. With the playoffs expanding this year, the rivalry matchup could be even more important in the rugged NUIC.

Forreston at Galena, Oct. 9

Last year’s matchup came down to the final play as Forreston held on for a 22-20 win after denying Galena’s twopoint pass attempt. The Cardinals got back to the playoffs last season after their first losing campaign since 2009 the previous year. Both teams finished 4-4 in conference last season. With Du-Pec leaving for the Big Northern Conference, one of these teams could be able to take another step up in the NUIC.

Rockford Lutheran at Rock Falls, Aug. 21

The Rockets and second-year head coach David Chavira will look to get off on the right track after a winless season last year. Last year’s season finale against the Crusaders was RF’s closest game of the season before falling 22-16. Lutheran finished 1-8. With the playoffs expanding this season, opening the year with a victory could go a long way for a team that has not won more than a game or two since a 3-6 finish in 2018. Rock Falls has not made the playoffs since 1993.
