Despite the Midwestern heat and humidity, it only took two days for a small crew from Countryside Construction to build a new pavilion at Morrison’s dog park located on North Genesee Street.

The Amish builders started on Monday morning, July 18, and the project was completed by Wednesday afternoon.

Funding for the pavilion and concrete pad were donated by the Morrison Rotary Club, with an aim to provide shelter for pets and their owners for years to come. It’s the latest project to be completed at the dog park after the concrete pad entrance was poured last fall.

Morrison’s Bark Park is being spearheaded

by On the Move with Parks and Recreation and supported by community organizations, private donations and the City of Morrison.

Committee member Karla Burn said after two years of planning and fundraising, the project is getting closer to completion.

Though there’s no solid date on when up to 1,600 feet of fencing will be installed, River City Fencing crews were on-site for measurements last week. Burn noted that the memorial bricks should be engraved within the next couple of weeks, and organizers are still looking for donations of 8-foot picnic tables, trash cans, a water fountain, signage and benches.

Burn said the whole project has been a community effort from the start. After the committee was unable to secure any grants, the community stepped up to help fund the project. Organizers initially met their $50,000 fundraising goal by their deadline, but because of supply chain issues and inflation, the project was delayed further because of the increased cost of materials.

“It’s been a community-oriented project since the start,” said Burn, adding that it’s been a rewarding effort for all involved. Donations to the Bark Park can be made at TBK Bank in Morrison or online at the On the Move with Parks and Recreation or Morrison Lions Foundation, NFP Facebook pages.

New tanker for Morrison Fire Department

The Morrison Fire Department recently added a new tanker to the fleet thanks to their firefighters’ feedback and months of researching, budgeting and planning by a committee of four.

Tanker 3 replaces a 1991 model and joins the department’s fleet of nine trucks that includes three engines, three tankers, two rural fire fighting trucks and a rescue boat.

The 2,000-gallon tanker features a Freightliner M2106 Chassis, FX body, HALE AP-F

pump, and delivers 500 gallons per minute.

Painted on the side is a tribute to the department’s history – the Morrison Fire Department was founded in 1876 and was originally called The Jackson Hose Company.

The tanker comes from the Rosenbauer Group, a global leader in custom fire trucks and emergency response vehicles with four production facilities in the United States.

MFD purchased the tanker from Jefferson Fire & Safety in Middleton, Wisconsin.

The planning committee consisted of

Fire Chief Brian Johnson, who was assistant chief at the time, and volunteer firefighters Tim West, Andrew Swanstrom and Nate Decker. The tanker was purchased in December 2020 and delivered in early April 2022. It was officially put into service at the end of April and has been out for half a dozen calls since then.

Planning for the historic Sesquicentennial in Erie is ramping up as the celebration quickly approaches! Volunteers from Revitalize Erie have been working for months to plan a huge three-day celebration to celebrate their beloved village marking 150 years.

Plans for Friday, Aug. 12, involve welcoming home all the graduating classes from the Erie Community Unit School District. RSVPs have been coming in for classes as old as 1951! Classes are being invited to Erie High School for an Alumni Reunion which will include a food truck, live music, memorabilia sales, class photos and much more.

Classes are encouraged to visit the local restaurants and bars before or after the event, which will go from 4:30 to 8 p.m.

The grand celebration on Saturday, Aug. 13, is one that will surely go down in Erie history with activities going on in the downtown Triangle from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Sesquicentennial will include an artisan and farmers market, a car and tractor display, live blacksmithing, petting zoo and bounce houses, horse-drawn wagon rides, Life on the Prairie presentations, live music and a variety of contests – clothing, slam dunking, corn-eating, water hose fighting, pie baking, Brothers of the Brush best beards and Little Mister and Miss. A full day of fun is guaranteed!

The big celebration will continue into Sunday, Aug. 14, with a community breakfast at 8 a.m. at Erie Middle School,

followed by a Community Worship Service at 9 a.m. with all the local churches coming together for a service led by Tony Hawkins.

After the service, Revitalize Erie will be burying the 2022 time capsule in the newly renovated Margaret Park at noon. Erie residents wanting to place an item in the time capsule can drop them off at the history museum on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The historic weekend will wrap up with a golf outing at the Lake Erie Country Club starting at 1 p.m. The four-person scramble will feature great prizes for the top scores.

Revitalize Erie’s efforts to prepare the village for the historic event included a complete renovation of Margaret Park in the downtown.

The redesign is set to be done Aug. 5, just in time for the event.

They’re also installing new signage on all the roads leading into Erie ahead of the event.

Organizers are looking for more volunteers to sign up to help with a variety of tasks during the Aug. 12-14 weekend, including bouncy house and game supervisors, artisan and farmers market check in, contest supervisors, and more.

Everyone who helps at the event will get a free T-shirt.

First Presbyterian Church to host Morrison Fire Department meal benefit

MORRISON – First Presbyterian Church, 100 E. Lincolnway, Morrison, will be hosting its second annual Morrison Fire Department Benefit Free Community Drive-Up Meal at 5 p.m. Thursday.

350 free meals will be handed out. All donations will be given to the Morrison Fire Department.

The menu will consist of quarter pound all-beef franks, baked beans, chips and Resthave Home fresh baked cookies. Outdoor seating under shade tents will be available for those who want to eat on-site weather permitting.

A fire engine for children to explore and a bouncy house will be at the event.

151st Whiteside County Fair announces entertainment

The 151st Whiteside County Fair is less than a month away and another impressive lineup of entertainment is in place that is sure to wow all crowds.

The fair opens on Tuesday, Aug. 16, and completes after five amazing days on Saturday, Aug. 20, and you will not want to miss it! The 151st annual fair, held at the fairgrounds in Morrison, has many exciting attractions and something for everyone.

Tuesday, Aug. 16

Pro-Bull Riding is the evening entertainment starting at 7 p.m. Cheer on as these brave cowboys prepare to hang on for 8 seconds while their fourlegged nemesis try to spoil their plans.

Other events to start the fair off are the Pleasure Horse Show at 9 a.m.

Large Fowl Judging is canceled because of avian influenza restrictions. Open Swine Judging is at noon, Jr. Swine Judging at 4:30 p.m., and the Kids Tractor Pedal Pull is at 2 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 17

For the first time, Pro-Bronc Riding will be the entertainment at 7 p.m.

This event will involve a rodeo participant riding a bucking horse (sometimes called Bronco) that attempts to throw or buck off the rider before the 8 seconds is up. Originally based on the necessary buck breaking skills of a working cowboy, the event is now a highly stylized competition that uses horses that often are specially bred for strength, agility and bucking ability.

Other events during the day are the Exhibition Barrels at 8 a.m. and Western Horse speed events and Dairy Judging at 9 a.m.

Thursday, Aug. 18

The evening grandstand entertainment will be Karen as Dolly. This favorite Dolly Parton tribute artist will be on the big stage for everyone to see. Possessing a wide array of performance experience, a serious set of pipes and a dead-on tone, Karen Hester brings her Dolly Parton act to life at 7 p.m.

Other events that day will start at 9 a.m. with the Beef Cattle – Jr. Show being judged at the Beef Show Arena.

The Heavy Horse Hitches includes 4-Horse in front of the grandstand at 9 a.m. and Halter Classes are at 1 p.m. by the grandstand.

Friday, Aug. 19

The Illini State Pullers Association will bring in their “souped up” tractors and trucks that will pull the sled showing off the horsepower under the hood at 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand following the Antique Tractor Parade at 5:30 p.m.

Fulton High School garden to provide food, lessons

When Fulton High School students return to school next month, they’ll be greeted by a garden in bloom and full of fresh, organic and colorful fruits and vegetables. A former grassy lot on the north side of the gym is now yielding an abundance of produce and eventually lessons in agriculture.

The “urban farming” project was inspired and planted by Family Consumer Science teacher Carolyn Meurs but it’s been a combined effort between students, staff and local businesses and organizations. The garden will provide students, and a future FFA chapter, with hands-on learning space for experiential education – and some deliciously fresh garden produce.

After the location of the garden was determined, Meurs and a small team

got to work on making the gardens grow this year. Science teacher Tim Johnston and his environmental science class tested the garden space.

Jeff Spencer Excavating removed the sod and brought in gravel at no cost.

Funding for the lumber of the eight raised garden beds was provided by Central Bank, and Jason Snyder’s Industrial Arts class built the waisthigh wood beds.

Fulton High School’s science teacher Jen Pepper donated a composter, and Fulton High School’s science teacher Stacy Gates wrote a grant to the Whiteside County Soil and Water Conservation District Education Foundation, which recently yielded two rain barrels and $1,000 for the garden. The soil was purchased with a CF Industries grant.

Meurs has been a teacher at FHS for three years and credits her upbringing on a hobby farm in

Kewanee as inspiration for the project. The garden infrastructure was taking shape by the end of the school year but planted at the start of summer break so produce would be ready by the time school was back in session. She’s been weeding it by hand since no pesticides are used, and the elevated garden beds ensure that the food is mostly safe from neighborhood critters. Garden planters full of colorful zinnias attract bees and other essential pollinators.

Meurs intends to use some of the produce in her classroom, with tomatoes for spaghetti and pizza sauce, and peppers, onions, tomatoes and jalapenos for Pico de Gallo. Cherry tomatoes will be picked for the lunchroom’s salad bar, and perennials such as rhubarb and asparagus will be harvested after two years of growth. A strawberry patch is close to yielding fruit, and cucumbers are currently filling

the vines. She’s trying her hand at growing potatoes and is using companion planting in one of the beds.

Other ideas in the works include a tool shed with gutters and spouts to capture rain in the barrels, and possibly some chickens and a coop, though a bit more research is needed. Compost and worms will eventually be added to the soil. There is ample space for growth, ideas and contributions, even as the garden thrives in the first year on the lot.

“At FHS, we continue to focus on skills students need after high school,” Principal Bob Gosch said. “Mrs. Meurs has done a great job teaching the students skills as our students are cooking nearly every day. Adding this next part to help students learn about growing their own vegetables and harvesting is the next step, so we are excited for our students to begin working with the garden.”

Patricia A. Gorzny passed away July 22, 2022, at Allure of Prophetstown at the age of 80.

She was born in Chadwick, IL, the daughter of Edward and Lucille (Armstrong) Loechel. Pat attended Chadwick and Lyndon elementary schools, eventually graduating from Lyndon High School.

She worked several years as a Nurses’ Aide for Morrison Community Hospital.

Pat enjoyed reading and playing computer games. She loved animals of every description, especially her dogs and cats, horses and deer.

Marilyn was born May 17, 1937, in Geneseo, IL, to Fred and Lillian (Ward) Searle. She was a graduate of Geneseo High School and later attended Iowa State University. She married Aylsworth “Bud” Jones on September 28, 1957, in Geneseo. He died October 27, 2006.

Marilyn raised her children while working on the family farm. She was a member of the Former First Congregational Church in Prophetstown. Marilyn enjoyed being active, whether it was traveling, bicycling, walking or sewing.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan (Steve) Miller of Davenport, IA; one son, Stan (Kristin) Jones of Washington, IA; four grandchildren, Amanda (Cooper) SantAmour and Craig Miller, Cody and Ryan Jones.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bud; one sister, Maxine Loitz.

Shirley first worked for the Chicago Board of Trade, then as a secretary for the steel mill and Tegeler Equipment, until becoming a fulltime mother and homemaker. Shirley liked to entertain friends and family in her home, and she enjoyed traveling. She had gone on a number of overseas trips. She also loved visiting her daughters and grandchildren.

With an assortment of eye-catching designs, from animals to pink ribbons to sugar skulls to golden stars with quippy one-liners, the embroidered pieces of a Prophetstown artist capture the creativity that flowed from a world changed by COVID-19.

Suzie Stitchez is the artistic outlet for Susan Stanhoff, who finds daily inspiration and motivation by stitching custom, unique and out-of-the-ordinary designs. She always wanted to open her own business after watching her father run his own, saying she also carries an “entrepreneurial spirit.”

After living and raising a family in the western suburbs of Chicago since 1988, she moved back to her hometown of Prophetstown in 2019, leaving behind a career as a field visual merchandiser for a jewelry company and an operations manager of a retail clothing store. With a degree and background in the arts, she was poised to take her work to the next level once the inspiration hit.

In January 2020, she decided to try her hand at machine embroidery after spending years sewing and quilting for relaxation and fun time.

“Machine embroidery was kind of like the next step in the process, but this time I saw potential to turn this into an actual business,” she said.

“I’ve always been a lifelong lover of all ‘hand crafts’ and have enjoyed doing many of them.” With COVID-19 hitting soon after, it opened the door to embark on one of her lifelong dreams – to own her own business.

Having to stay in the house provided her a perfect opportunity to learn machine embroidery. She watched YouTube videos and joined countless embroidery social media groups, soaking up as much information as she could. After months of practicing the craft, and with the “wonderful support of family and friends,” Suzie Stitchez was launched in June 2021.

She originally focused on embroidering on faux leather and making boutique style key chains, bookmarks, coasters, earrings and Christmas ornaments before eventually adding tea towels and hand towels to the mix. After a year of perfecting her craft, she’s now at the stage where she can customize just about anything, including personalized towels for newlyweds and blankets for babies.

“I enjoy learning new embroidery techniques, creating out-of-the-ordinary items and customizing holiday gift ideas for my clients,” she said.

Her current best seller is the Goldendoodle keychain designs, which went from a thank you gift for a friend to one of her best-selling designs on Etsy. She’s constantly adding to her “Doodle” dogs’ collection and always welcomes new design ideas. Her quirky sense of humor and appreciation for pop culture provides endless inspiration for the variety of art she produces.

Stanhoff also credits Jenna Scifres of Prophetstown for being an “amazing mentor” in her small business journey. “I couldn’t have made the next step without her help!” she said of the jewelry maker and owner of Jenna Scifres Handmade Jewelry.

Stanhoff’s goal is to eventually have a storefront location on Main Street in Prophetstown.

Stanhoff currently operates out of her home and offers front door pickup and shipping if needed. She sells through Etsy under Suzie Stitchez and has business pages on Facebook and Instagram.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Bly and children returned home from a vacation and mission assignment. Two weeks were spent in Swainsboro, Georgia, where Mr. and Mrs. Bly and another couple were engaged with the Mary More Mission in taking a religious census. Their aim was to find out how many Catholics, or people interested in the Catholic faith, were living in that community.

Dr. B. J. Snyder of Fulton was one of 37 osteopathic physicians given a life membership by the American Osteopathic Association at its annual meeting at the Drake Hotel. Doctors eligible to receive this honor are those who have either reached the age of 70 or have been in osteopathic practice for 50 years or more.

Morrison Rockwood State Park will be formally dedicated by Gov. Richard Ogilvie on Aug. 4 at the boat ramp area. The 1,240-acre park contains 77-acre Lake Carlton, named in memory of L. Carlton Anderson, an early proponent of the park. Concept and promotion of the park has been a spe-

cial concern of the Morrison Lions Club, with the present committee including Roy Velde, Stan Domack, Al Zuidema, Erwin Stralow, L. Null, Mark Olson, Harry Watt and Alvin Shawver.

“Heinie” Meurs is giving up at least two jobs, and probably several more, as he retires from both the Fulton Fire Department and the City of Fulton.

After 23 years as assistant fire chief and a stint with the Blackhawk Fire Fighters Association that carried him through all offices of the organization including the presidency, Henry Meurs is laying down the burdens of office. He insists that Mrs. Meurs is entitled to a large share of whatever credit may be due him. She always had a big part in promoting the Miss Flame festivals.

Benefits of adequate sleep are discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. The term circadian rhythm refers to the notion that humans have a natural rhythm in the course of 24 hours.

We presume that as we are all unique, we may have our own special time clock. We naturally presume that some people are night owls by nature.

As it turns out, we are all far more alike than we are different. People who claim to be night owls revert to the standard timeline when deprived of light and other artificial constructs as a natural hardwired program.

The World Health Organization identifies shift work as carcinogenic or cancer-causing along with raising circulation problems with the heart, depression, etc. Eric Barker quotes from The Circadian Code, “The majority of Americans and Europeans go to bed after midnight or wake up with insufficient sleep.” This has the same impact as shift work. Consistency is important and we cannot correct this deficiency on weekends in a healthy fashion.

We have all heard the benefits of adequate sleep is generally sited as 8 hours. It turns out, the proper amount is closer to 7 hours. The other essential factors to keep in mind are: 1) Light. It turns out all light matters, not just blue light which has received much attention. Dim whatever you can when the sun goes down.

Blue light blocking glasses 2-3 hours before bed helps.

2) Eating. Eating during daylight is quite helpful for your health, energy and hormones. This is something that the intermittent fasting has confirmed. Eating late may provide short term energy, but the drain on the next day more than offsets the gain.

3) Exercise. Studies aim for 150 minutes per week. This can be done through natural activity and simple walking. Others site that bursts of sprint-like activity done for 10-15 minutes three times a week is quite helpful. Either way, activity from 3 to 6 p.m. is ideal. If you must exercise later, the cool shower trick helps reset your internal temperature which con-

tributes to circadian rhythms.

4) Consistency. This is far more important than people realize. You cannot make the deficits up with sleeping in on weekends or power naps.

5) Sunrise and sunset. Direct sunlight outside for 2-10 minutes has an incredible positive impact in the morning. By the same token, doing the same at night does another positive measure for hormones and energy.

6) Best time to work. If you do everything right, what is the best time to reap the benefits? It’s actually 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Another consideration for helping to rebalance the out of synch circadian rhythm involves electromagnetic waves. We hear about avoiding electromagnetic waves in our lives, but the reality is this is nearly impossible.

However, if the electromagnetic waves are controlled in a process known as pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF), this therapy can produce the types of brain waves that restore proper sleep and relaxation.

Fulton Police Chief Nicholas Neblung was selected to attend and represent Western Illinois at the Third Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Command Course (NCC) in Quantico, Virginia.

The National Command Course is offered to chief executives (police chiefs and sheriffs) of agencies with fewer than 50 sworn officers. The selections are highly competitive because of the large number of applications received and attendees are selected through a nomination and application process to represent FBI field offices across the country.

This course was created to include facilitated discussions between subject matter experts and other participants, leadership training,and the exchange of ideas and solutions to problems confronted by smaller law enforcement agencies. Smaller-sized agencies represent about 80% of all law enforcement departments in the United States.

Chief Neblung was one of 45 participants in this course representing departments from as far away as Alaska, and one of four from the state of Illinois.

Arrests On Wednesday, July 20, about 5:04 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Christopher S. Bourke, 41, of Morrison, in the 600 block of South Portland Avenue for equipment and registration violations. As a result of the traffic stop, Bourke was issued three citations for no valid driver’s license, expired registration and operating uninsured vehicle. Bourke also was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Rock Island County, charging Bourke with failure to appear – theft. Bourke was transported to the Whiteside County Jail, was processed and then released on bond. Morrison police were assisted by the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office.

ISP District 1 announces activity for June

Illinois State Police District 1 announced enforcement figures and activity for June.

Illinois State Police District 1 troopers issued 335 citations and 373 written warnings and made 11 criminal arrests during the month of June. Speeding accounted for 130 citations. There were 20 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/revoked.

Troopers investigated 24 traffic crashes, assisted 125 motorists and conducted 82 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 14 of which were placed out of service for safety reasons. There were three arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in June.

Benefit fund established for Fulton couple injured in buggy/car collision

A benefit fund was established for a rural Fulton couple hospitalized Sunday after a vehicle collided with their horse-drawn buggy at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Millard Road in rural Morrison shortly after 8 a.m.

Mary W. Weaver, 65, and her husband, Lewis E. Weaver, 74, were turning south on Millard, exiting the intersection when they were struck from behind by an eastbound vehicle driven by Miranda M. Jenkins, 34, of Clinton, Iowa, the Whiteside County sheriff said in a news release.

They were thrown from the buggy, taken to Mercy One Medical Center in Clinton and then flown to Iowa City, according to the release.

No information is being provided by the hospital on their conditions. No citations were issued as of July 19.

Albany Riverfest is back with family-friendly fun

Albany Riverfest is returning Saturday, Aug. 6, with a variety of events and activities scheduled for the free and family-friendly festival.

The day starts with the Red Lippy Race for Grace held in memory of Grace Whitten, a longtime journalist and columnist for area newspapers.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m., lineup

is at 7:50 and the 5K starts at 8 a.m. in front of the fire station at 409 N. Church St. All proceeds go toward dementia research and legislation through the Alzheimer’s Association of Illinois.

Cost per entry is $15, with registration already closed. Door prizes are sponsored by 3M and proceeds from the car show go toward Wreaths Across America in Albany.

Other activities at the marina start at 10 a.m. with a beer garden, vendors and craft show. Kids games and bounce houses open at 11. Steamers look to reload with new group of senior starters

dwussow@shawmedia.com FULTON – After a COVID-altered 2020 season, the Fulton football team resumed its winning ways as it returned to a full schedule in 2021, compiling a 9-3 record and reaching the IHSA Class 1A quarterfinals.

In 2022, the Steamers will try to replicate that success while relying heavily on a new crop of senior starters.

Although the roster features 18 seniors this year, it will be somewhat lacking in game experience. Just a handful of those seniors are returning starters, so Fulton will be looking to many of last year’s backups to fill its vacated roles from a season ago.

“Roughly we have three or four [returning starters]. Not very many,” Fulton coach Patrick Lower said.

“We’ve been senior-dominated actually the last two years. We have 18 seniors, which is great, but a lot of them haven’t seen a ton of time, so there’s a big question mark there.

“We have senior offensive lineman Braiden Damhoff returning, and then we’ve got Ryan Eads, a running back for us. And those two guys played the

for Fulton this year.

Although the Steamers will be counting on many new starters in 2022, they still like their chances of performing well this season.

“I feel like we’ve got a lot of young guys here that can really help us, and I don’t think that losing our seniors is going to affect our progress this season,” Damhoff said. “I feel that we’re going to have a really good passing game this season with Brayden Dykstra back as our quarterback.”

“Our expectations are to pretty much just carry on what we did last year,” Eads said. “We had a lot of seniors that left us last year, but I think we have a lot of backups and a lot of juniors that are now seniors that can easily fill those roles. But I hope to do even better.”

Two games that stand out on the schedule this year are Week 4 against Muskegon (Michigan) Catholic Central and Week 5 against reigning Class 1A state champion Lena-Winslow. The Panthers handed Fulton its season-ending loss, 54-28, in the IHSA quarterfinals last year, and also won

Sixteen area school districts and the Whiteside Area Career Center are recipients of some of the $30 million in Illinois State Board of Education school maintenance grants distributed this year to more than 600 educational entities statewide.

It’s a dollar-for-dollar matching grant program open to school districts, cooperative high schools, vocational centers and special education cooperatives. The money must be used to maintain educational buildings.

To be eligible, districts must match any funds awarded and commit to completing their proposed projects within two years of obtaining the money.

Emergency projects made necessary by a disaster, health/life safety projects and upgrades to building systems such as HVAC and plumbing are among the priorities considered by the ISBE in awarding the grants.

The school districts receiving the highest amount, $50,000, are Sterling, Rock Falls High, Montmorency in Rock Falls, Riverbend in Fulton and Erie in Whiteside County; Dixon, Amboy and Paw Paw in Lee County; Eastland in Lanark, West Carroll in Savanna and Chadwick-Milledgeville in Carroll County; and Kings, Forestville Valley in Forreston and Byron in Ogle County.

The Whiteside Area Career Center in Sterling also received $50,000.

Eswood in Ogle County received $35,000, and Prophetstown-Lyndon-Tampico received $29,150.

“The schedule really got a little tougher this year because you’ve not only got your teams that are really solid in the conference, but we’re also playing a nonconference team out of Michigan that’s a perennial powerhouse out of the Muskegon area,” Lower said. “So that’ll be our Week 4 game, and that’ll be a tough one. But each and every week, you’ve gotta be ready to play, so we’re gonna just take one game at a time.”

“I like our schedule,” Eads said.

“We’ve got Muskegon coming in from Michigan. I think that’ll be a good game.

Pretty much almost the same thing as last year, so we’ll just hope to get some wins.”

With so many starting positions to fill from last year, Lower is still getting a feel for this year’s team.

Early on, though, he’s been encouraged by what he’s seen in summer camp.

“A bunch of good kids, kids that work hard. When we have something [going on], they’re here, they’re getting better,” Lower said. “They talk, they listen.

They want to be good, and that’s good. I think the classes over the last several years have kind of set the tone for what we expect from kids, and I think they just want to follow suit, and they’re going to do everything they can to do that.”

Fulton will open its season Aug. 26 at home against Galena at 7 p.m.
